Ham-Burgled: Los Angeles Council Pushes 'Meatless Mondays'
Los Angeles City Council leaders have voted 14-0 in favor of endorsing the internationally led "Meatless Mondays" campaign.
Los Angeles City Council leaders have voted 14-0 in favor of endorsing the internationally led "Meatless Mondays" campaign. Now every Monday will be a so-called Meatless Monday in the city, with the Council urging residents to participate and embrace vegetarianism once a week.
Councilwoman Jan Perry, who also supports the banning of new fast food restaurants in South Los Angeles, said the new resolution is just one part of a new "good food" agenda for the city.
"We can reduce saturated fats and reduce the risk of heart disease by 19 percent," Perry reportedly told the Los Angeles Daily News. "While this is a symbolic gesture, it is asking people to think about the food choices they make. Eating less meat can reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses."
Government official in California have a history of pushing strict food policies in the name of public health. In 2008 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill to remove all trans fats from the state's restaurants and retail baked goods. In 2010 the state prohibited fast food chains from giving out toys with their children's meals if they contained over a specified amount of calories. In 2011, many South Los Angeles cities effectively banned the opening of new fast-food outlets by enacting tougher regulations designed to encourage healthier dining options.
Back in July the Department of Agriculture (USDA) came under fire for supporting the Meatless Monday campaign. Farmers and ranchers unions such as the Cattlemen's Association complained that supportive polices vilified the American meat industry by encouraging the opinion that "animal agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gases and climate changes" and that it also "wastes resources." Following complaint the USDA were forced to remove any endorsements of the Meatless Monday initiative.
The new Los Angeles resolution does not have the force of law behind it, meaning that "neither city officials nor law enforcement will be allowed to force residents to not eat meat."

I like this new girl intern. She catches on quick.
Yes. Superb alt-text.
I... approve this message.
If Jan Perry would like to go "Meatless Monday" vegetarian, she is more than welcome to drive down to Long Beach and eat the corn out of my shit. I'll make sure to load up on corn all Sunday. She should show up around, say 8:10 AM, after I finish my pot of coffee. Fuck that bitch.
I kept thinking this article was quoting Jan Murray instead of Jan Perry. Wonder if they're related?
Don't Stop Believing.
Nice World War I throwback, LA.
You could always tell Lisa was a liberal. (Unfortunately, for many, "brainy" automatically equals liberal.) But the writing for her character really took a substantial decline when they made her a smug, vegetarian Buddhist.
^^^ True 'dat.
Well, to be fair, that coincided with the entire show taking a substantial decline. John Swartzwelder would turn over in his grave... if it wasn't filled with some veteran.
"Los Angeles Council Pushes 'Meatless Mondays'"
Religion, nothing other than that. A1; "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"
Fuck you, LA Council; you are doing nothing other than establishing a religion
that's a shitty religion, too
If I established a religion it would include 'Free Beer Fridays"
Agreed; it's one of those hair-shirt bleefs.
How about free fucks on...?
I think your definition of religion might be a bit broad.
But isn't this law just an example of right-wing homophobic patriarchy? Some people enjoy eating meat on Mondays.
Boy, don't you wish your job was to sit around to think of meaningless ideas to endorse, vote on it, and feel like you actually accomplished something? What's Jan Perry's salary, by the way?
If it's more than one stale cheerio per week, it's too high.
More importantly, are Top Women on the same pay scale as Top Men?
If they don't have Top Babies, then sure.
Depends...are we talking about porn?
Yes, I certainly want delusional health advice from this woman.
Oh please let Kansas City ruin the Steelers' day.
can we get 2 ties in one week?
I'd prefer the Steelers lose at home.
Right, well sorry 'bout that then.
So much for that.
Steelers fans get to keep on being the most annoying fans in existence.
I BROKER NO DISSENT ON THIS ISSUE
Hey, I live with one.
I made fun of him for letting the Chiefs get that far, though.
I just wish they would do away with the regular season overtime rules.
For the playoffs, I also wish they would adopt a modified Kansas City overtime format (everybody gets an equal number of possessions) in which instead of placing the ball automatically at the 20 or 25 yard line, they would kick off or punt on non-turnover changes in possession.
(I also wouldn't mind having a scrum to decide opening possession, instead of a coin toss.)
Oops, that's "Kansas Plan" not "Kansas City".
Forget this woman, over half of the clinical nutritionists with whom I have dealt are either pudgy or flat out fattie.
And "Big Boned" doesn't cut the mustard here either.
Maybe you should stop dating them then, doc.
Most amusing, I avoid medical people like the plague in that area of life. Helps to avoid Petraeus-levels of "Oh shit!"
Channel your inner Spock, doc.
The doc is only one quarter Vulcan, not half.
A Vuldroon?
I'd say that was racist but Vulcans don't care anyway.
I'd say that was racist but Vulcans don't care anyway.
Do they? Do they?
You'll forget that when pon farr kicks in... Still, one quarter is not too shabby, considering a half-Druish lineage to boot. -)
You're going to regret that heritage when the urge kicks in and only Kirstie Alley is around.
You know, TAO, you do have some dreamy eyes there, buddy. Besides, a precision strike snack cake should keep Kirstie quiet, or at least occupied.
Also, Savvik was played by Robin Curtis when Baby Spock was getting his pon farr phreak on.
Pon Farr is for mating, and as I lack a uterus well something something green blooded monster.
And Robin Curtis,,,is she alive?
It would appear Robin Curtis is still alive and kicking...
more coushin for the pushin?
Yup, the head of the Nutrition department at our hospital is approximately 5'4" and 275 lbs. She wears flared pantsuits.
For me, Monday has now officially become the "double quarter pounder with cheese" Monday. I'm going to buy two, eat one and throw the other one away. Of course, I'll take a picture of said tossed burger and send a jpeg off to the LA city council. McDonalds makes me fart up a storm which will toss even more methane into the atmosphere, so it's a win/win.
buy one, throw the other at city hall.
Isn't the saturated fats - cardiac disease link disproven?
At this point, it's inconclusive. IMMO, I would definitely lean towards no, but then there are more factors that comprise risk and etiology of of cardiac disease and stroke, and it is currently unknown if replacing saturated fats with unsaturated and/or poly-unsaturated fats will have any affect on CVD (cardiovascular dieasase) or CHD (coronary heart disease).
Patients have to be taken individually and evaluated as per family HX as well as health HX. Since most people don't keep food diaries or records of their diet like one might keep daily financial records of transactions, since, from an epidemiological POV, patient dietary HX recollection is notoriously unreliable.
Isn't the saturated fats - cardiac disease link disproven?
Cardiac disease statistically correlates much better with sugar and alcohol than fats. Does that disprove it? No, but it puts the onus on the people making claims about fat intake.
Holy shit this is awesome...
You idiots in Bankruptafornia have your Stocktons and your Watts, we here in Nashville have our Church street park, which shall remain a crime free mecca for all eternity.
http://www.newschannel5.com/st.....k.facebook
This is why I love Nashville. This is seriously a problem. Stockton can't even afford police, we are arguing over where cops should be patrolling.
Also, no income tax.
nice. imo, cops should generally patrol where crime is highest. novel concept.
So cops should be patrolling government buildings and police stations? Sounds like a great fucking idea.
Had Kung Pao chicken and Beijing beef at Panda Express earlier and about to cook some turkey burgers for dinner. Fuck you LA city council
"Fuck you LA city council"
Meat is murder.
"and Beijing Panda at beef Express earlier"
Much better.
OT:
from funk-rock Georgia... MOTHER'S FINEST!
Hell yeah! I was just listening to them the other day and thinking that is the finest intro to a live album of which I am aware.
Whoa. Clearly there is something going on with the collective unconscious, because I've had MF on heavy rotation the last few days.
So, if nobody in LA can get a square meal on mondays, Jan Perry's fat ass will get smaller, right?

I'm actually thinking of giving up riding to work just so I don't have to answer, "Aren't you cold?!" 50 times from the front door to my desk.
Someone should tell the good councilwoman that the nation does not end just past Chino and Ontario.
It's Los Angeles city council, not the county. So they apparently think the nation ends in Boyle Heights, Vernon and Hawthorne.
BREAKING: Another General John R. Allen involved in the Petraeus scandal

Stalin used to just have them shot.
Jesus, how hard is it to keep it in your pants until you retire from your position of authority?
Yeah, you're so much more sexy when you're a *former* something.
Why should LA rely on appetite suppessants like ritalin to focus pupil's educational energy when they could save school funds by declaring tobacco a vegetable , like ketchup.
I have no idea what you just wrote. But, I do like speed, tobacco, and ketchup.
Also, fried chicken.
No, see... It's a perfect insult because Russell here thinks he has stumbled on a secret cadre of Republicans and Republicans said ketchup was a vegetable and we said something bad about perfect shiny jewel awesome city Los Angeles and so AH-HA! IN YOUR FACE REPUBLICANS!
Do you know what the taxes are on tobacco these days? Ritalin is cheaper.
Tomacco?
Hmm. Business opportunity?
Has the whole world gone insane?
No. The World is perfectly sane. You, on the other hand are going insane. Put the bong down, wander down to The Strand, look at the stars, and collect yourself. For God's sake man, you have business to attend to in the morning. Pull it together.
The Catholics must have been a few decades early in doing away with meatless Fridays. So now it's Mondays?
"We can reduce saturated fats and reduce the risk of heart disease by 19 percent," Perry reportedly told the Los Angeles Daily News.
Perry needs to read studies:
British Medical Journal 1977 Nov 19;2(6098):1307-14
Diet and heart: a postscript.
Morris JN, Marr JW, Clayton DG.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/589165
This study examined the relationship of diet with heart disease. The study included 337 healthy middle-aged men who were followed for up to 20 years.
- Men who consumed the most animal fat had a 23% decreased risk of heart disease compared to the men who consumed the least animal fat.
- Men who consumed the most animal protein had a 15% decreased risk of heart disease compared to the men who consumed the least animal protein.
Gary Taubes' book said something similar. We'v been misled for decades.
the only people who have been misled are the people who listen to the govt. and the establishment for nutrition advice, fwiw. sports scientists have known that this is crap for decades. just gotta go to the right sources.
Taubes' book is excellent, and I am already trying to line up getting it translated to Russian and Ukrainian so I can distribute it in bulk while I am here.
However, given the average UKR has a pretty Taubes' friendly diet anyway, it makes my job that much easier.
It should also be kept in mind that a decreased risk of heart disease is good, but I am not 100% convinced it is strictly related to the amount of animal fats consumed, and specifically which ones are optimal. But, as I said, any mitigating factor is should be employed.
Vegetarians all seem Red to me. Meaning they prefer a Hammer and Sickle to a hamburger.
"Eating less meat can reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses" More like ditching carbs can, but you know, semantics...
it's not about ditching carbs. nothing wrong with carbs. eating an apple is a good thing
i would suggest ditching overly processed carbs, like refined flours etc.
but carbs are not the enemy. otoh, it is true that there are no essential carbs, whereas there are essential fats and proteins.
it is true that there are no essential carbs
Incorrect. One cannot live without glucose. Correct about overly processed, energy-dense carbs; however, complex carbohydrates in smaller amounts (portion is key) are certainly healthy and part of an overall good diet, barring any complicating or chronic conditions such as Teh Diabeetus.
you are missing the point
the point is that if you eat zero DIETARY carbs, glucose etc. will still exist endogenously because other substrates (proteins/fats) can be converted INTO glucose
there are 'essential fatty acids' - essential fats that you MUST consume in your diet. they cannot be synthesized internally
there are "essential amino acids' - esential proteins that you must eat
there are NO essential carbs
but that is only used as a last resort. Relying gluconeogenesis regularly leads to severe and toxic ketosis (ketoacidosis). You could argue that a small amount of dietary carbs/glucose are essential given that our brains primarily relies on it. Again, differentiating between primary uses and last resort, survival, extreme condition uses.
the point is that if you eat zero DIETARY carbs, glucose etc. will still exist endogenously because other substrates (proteins/fats) can be converted INTO glucose
Correct. This is also extremely hard on the body for the reasons elucidated by np, and also can be very hard on the kidneys, specifically GFR (glomerular filtration rate) and blood pH.
there are 'essential fatty acids' - essential fats that you MUST consume in your diet. they cannot be synthesized internally
I am well aware of the distinction b'twixt "essential" and "non-essential", nutritionally speaking. I might have learned it in medical school, dunphy.
there are "essential amino acids' - esential proteins that you must eat
See above.
there are NO essential carbs
The body will make sure that there is a level necessary for the brain to survive, true. However, as you know, converting fats and proteins to glucose is extremely energy intensive and time consuming. Otherwise, there would be no point for glycogen (in plants you would call this "starch") and glucogon, required for the release of glycogen to glucose while inactive, like sleeping, anaesthetized, or in a coma. So, exogeneous carbs are essential, in that sense, and a certain amount must be consumed. Even Taubes concedes that and homeostasis is not magic.
Showing once again that the state is the biggest bully of them all.
No way dude, dont even go there man!

If I went to a Los Angeles restaurant on a Monday and there was no meat, I would say "Yo Goober! Where's the meat?"
She's no Lucy...but she will do.
