Rand Paul to Speak at Republican National Convention, Says Reuters
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) isn't currently scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention, but according to Reuters*, his son Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.)--the one with the future with the GOP--will be.
This is a sign that Rand Paul's clear attempts to be the libertarian-leaning Republican who actually cares if he's pissing off the rest of his party are working, so far. As I suggested in front of the senator during our joint presentation back in May about my book Ron Paul's Revolution: The Man and the Movement He Inspired, his future as a potential presidential candidate might be rich whether or not Romney wins this year
The idea was that Romney will likely be so terrible in terms of reining in government to affordable Constitutional limits that a primary challenge from the likes of a Rand Paul from the libertarian wing could help limn the divide in the GOP in a very vivid, and possibly even successful, way. The same logic applies whether Rand Paul in 2016 is running against an incumbent Romney (not that such a move on Paul's part is at all certain) or against whoever else steps up for the GOP crown in 2016.
As much as it annoys many of the Paul hardcore, it will be easier to help define the future of the Republican Party from a believable position of being Loyal Opposition rather than rebel outsider. So don't expect Rand Paul to attack Romney explicitly in Tampa. But I do hold out hope he may speak of serious spending cuts, serious curbing of government's civil liberties violations, and seriously sensible foreign policy in a way that implicitly does so.
Previous blogging on Rand Paul's Romney endoresement, his critique of Romney's foreign policy, and the early rumors back in June of a Rand Paul speaking slot (which seem to have been true).
My May speaking appearance with Sen. Paul:

hey that is Brian Doherty sitting next to the podium trying to look all cool and shit.
Updates at 3 in the morning, I like it. Doherty must've gotten woken by a call on his gold phone connected directly to the Paul house.
As far as the speech, there's no way it'll be more exciting than his big CPAC one, where he droned on about tax hikes for rich people the entire time.
Y u no write a book, Bri?
"This is a sign that Rand Paul's clear attempts to be the libertarian-leaning Republican who actually cares if he's pissing off the rest of his party are working"
It's a sign that Rand Paul, Condoleezza Rice, etc. are trusted by the people in charge of organizing the convention. "Libertarin-leaning" is the subjective assessment of a relative inclination.
"As much as it annoys many of the Paul hardcore, it will be easier to help define the future of the Republican Party from a believable position of being Loyal Opposition rather than rebel outsider"
Is "loyal opposition" vs. "rebel outsider" the dichotomy that most realistically describes the motivations of either the "Paul hardore" or the shrinking GOP establishment? A more applicable contrast might be sincerity vs. deception (even if by ommision) or perhaps better yet, elucidation vs. obfuscation, no?
I jumped in the AustrianMobile and came here as soon as I saw that Doherty had turned on the Ron Paul gold dollar signal light.

I have no doubt Rand will behave himself at the big podium inside the convention, but I think PaulFest outside might get pretty dicey for Mittens given the list of speakers I've seen so far.
The plan as it stands now:
1. Run a candidate feeble enough that Obama will eek out another 4 years.
2. Slowly work the Libertarian Kwisatz Haderach into the mainstream by presenting him as a slightly different, but still viable alternative.
3. During Obama's extra 4 years, continue the mainstreaming and popularity building.
4. Allow a Constitutional Amendment to pass which will allow Obama to run a third term.
5. Run the LKH against Obama's now unsustainable and unwanted third term.
6. LKH wins the election.
7. LKH rips off mask, Mission Impossible style, displaying his true Libertarian colors.
8. Monocle party/Unleash Sandworms/Profit/Early Singularity/Zombies/Psychic Hivemind/Nuke from orbit
And I get to loot the Italian eatery hiding the Chinese army defectors. Great plan. I like it! I like it!
Frankly, I would have chosen the Chipotle hiding the Swedish Bikini Team, but to each their own!
Also, dibs on said Chipotle.
" Libertarian Kwisatz Haderach". I didn't follow the rest of the post but this reference was golden.

You forgot Lobster Girl. Lots and lots of Lobster Girl.
I like to imagine the ripping off of the mask, mission impossible style, as revealing the same face as the mask, only wearing a monocle where the mask had none.
That would be cool, but wearing a monocle under a mask hurts. I can't see Rand pulling it off for 4 years.
Good things happen to those that conform.
And all y'all questioned why he would publicly support Romney. See, there was a method to his madness. He's got a plan to take over the world.
BTW, WTF happened here?????
Not enough orange!
Those pompous windbags never seem to have a shortage of hot air to spew lol.

Odds are Romney will be the next President. I don't expect things to get better in the next four years so if Rand Paul doesn't challenge Romney in 2016 someone else within the GOP certainly will.
"As I suggested in front of the senator during our joint presentation back in May about my book..."
I was afraid this kind of descriptive toadying had gone out of style. Imagine my joy at finding it still extant in our fast-paced, modern world.
