Your Terrible Anti-Marijuana Editorial of the Day is Somehow in Favor of Decriminalization
An intriguing example of this weird, new shift on marijuana (currently hopefully happening) can be found in an awful op/ed from the San Jose Mercury News. The writer, Rocio Ramirez, writes badly for both the staff writer and the high school student she is, but she's buried something interesting under her grafs of awkward prose about a friend who fell hard for sweet lady Mary Jane, then several more on her boyfriend's marijuana-influenced school flunking. She admits that marijuana to her "surprise" has never killed anyone, but it's still bad for you:
He smoked more than two or three joints a day and more than two bowls a day with a "bong" water pipe. His "wake and bake" was the usual, and through the course of this he failed various classes and headed down to my town's remedial high school in Salinas. He forgets things, has difficulty concentrating, he doesn't think before he acts, and his attitude for various subjects is he could not care less. It jeopardizes his relationships and the people around him, making things critical and unstable…It's a behind-the-scenes look at marijuana abusers….
Knowing people who smoke marijuana is upsetting and excruciating. People might think it's their way of life, but I truly feel like they have potential, and it is all brought down not only by marijuana, but also by the painful atmosphere it brings along with it.
This isn't just their story. Marijuana addiction takes down a lot of people, not just the smoker.
Most every word, inspired by knowing some true, depressing burnouts or not, is DARE-iffic. But then, Ramirez shakes it up on us:
Even though many people, politicians and law enforcement agencies fight so hard to keep marijuana illegal, they don't realize how easy it is to get, especially on my campus. We should further decriminalize marijuana and offer free treatment to smokers willing to quit.
She even says "offer" not force (Putting her ahead of Chris Christie, as Mike Riggs noted.) This is sort of a hopeful sign, because dammit, in a free society, you could write all the subtle-as-a-sledgehammer anti-marijuana screeds you wanted and it wouldn't matter because drug use would be a personal choice. I'll even almost forgive her for ending thus:
We need to find new ways to bring awareness, set up programs that reach out to our youth and truly let others see that although marijuana doesn't kill, it can lead them to Ms. Cocaine and Mr. Speed.
Although marijuana doesn't kill, it has a way of destroying dreams and relationships.
Yeah, she's just a high school student who mostly sounds like a pamphlet to hand out to teens, yet she still manages to stumble towards a more sensible drug policy than many anti-marijuana adults with much slicker prose.
Reason on marijuana and drug policy.

I once knew a couple who were almost continuously stoned. One day, they decided to go 'straight' and give up pot.
At that point, they realized that they really did not like each other.
A very messy divorce ensued.
If you're not first on HitRun;, you're last.
I was just going to post, "No, dear, marriage destroys dreams and ruins relationships."
Long time no post, Lucy. I was just explaining in an earlier thread what happened to you. Glad to see you recovered.
Our demands have been met! Long Live the Dictatorship of the Commentariat.
How did you guys know?!
I like to think of Riggs like the crazy wife in the attic in "Jane Eyre." It's not his fault, you know.
We have a mole in your office. His name is...whoa, you almost tricked me into giving up Suder-Man.
Hey Lucy! I was wondering what you were up to. Good to see you back here. Oh yeah, way to go beating up on a high school girl. What, were they out of blind octogenarians? AIDS babies? French people?
Watch out, blind French babies with Progeria.
"Quaid... Start the re-actor..."
I should've killed myself when he put it in me. After the first time, before we were married, Riggs promised never again. He promised, and I believed him. But sin never dies. Sin never dies. At first, it was all right. We lived sinlessly. We slept in the same bed, but we never did it. And then, that night, I saw him looking down at me that way. We got down on our knees to pray for strength. I smelled the whiskey on his breath. Then he took me. He took me, with the stink of filthy roadhouse whiskey on his breath, and I liked it. I liked it! With all that dirty touching of his hands all over me. I should've given you to God when you were born, but I was weak and backsliding, and now the devil has come home. We'll pray.
I can see your dirty pillows. Everyone will.

LUCY!
AlmightyJB!
I honestly don't think this high schooler's prose is all that bad, Lucy. Feeling feisty today?
More like restraining the feisty because she's 17 and I don't want go to hell.
Oh, we don't want you to either, Lucy. I hear it's incredibly hot yet no sunlight to speak of.
Sorry, Lucy, but I am pretty sure that you are headed there as a result of guilt by association. You didn't really think you could come here and ever be clean again, did you?
A likely excuse. Lucy is mad because Ms. Cocaine is her stage name, and the author outed her.
"Strike her down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!"
I really don't think you were hard enough on the self-righteous dipshit.
In just the little bit Lucy cropped out, Ramirez switches tenses in a single paragraph, goes from talking about a person's actions to talking about marijuana without logically connecting them (or giving agency), uses scare quotes, redundant phraseology, and she litters the whole thing with logical fallacies.
How unsurprising that you would join Lucy "Shredder" Steigerwald in beating up on a defenseless teenage girl.
Defenseless, you say?
NutraSweet has dibs already, it seems, Warty. Find your own fresh meat.
"Oh, how awful. Did he at least die peacefully?
To shreds, you say... tsk tsk tsk. Well, how's his wife holding up?
To shreds, you say."
And here I thought Ms. Cocaine and Mr. Speed were worth the anthropomorphic price of admission. Low-hanging fruit may be easy but it sure is tasty.
I like nothing more than making teenage writer's cry. Especially the DARE-washed.
"Writer's"? Your turn to cry.
me no type gud
Here's the fun part: she's probably one of the best writers at her school.
It reads like a valedictorian's commencement speech, doesn't it?
That's really what this boils down to. This is exactly the kind of thought-free boilerplate churn that The Kids These Days are encouraged to produce. This retard at least has a shot at becoming less retarded in adulthood.
This retard at least has a shot at becoming less retarded in adulthood.
Not sure how you reached that conclusion. Wishful thinking maybe?
I know I overlink this, but it's not a new problem, Beloved Dags.
That is an excellent link. Always good to remember that terrible writing predates and will outlive us all.
Based on my own prior high school days, I guarantee one of the stoners she so pities can outdo her with nary an effort in terms of writing abilities. However, that stoner probably doesn't give enough of a fuck to bother.
Reading it, I wonder if she wasn't trolling the SJMN.
I'd like to think that she and a group of friends are reading her Op-Ed, totally buzzed and giggling.
When I was in high school drugs were easier to get then alchohol. When MJ is legal, will it be harder for minors to get?
If it's regulated like alcohol, then yes, yes it will.
Welk then it must be legalized. Its for the children.
Maybe she shouldn't have dated a loser boyfriend and we could have all been spared her nonsense.
In 40 years that dude will probably be president.
+10 internetz
And laughing at the idea of legalizing pot.
Seriously! You fell for a freaking loser. La-di-freaking-da.
But she can change him and help him reach his full potential. Then he'll be very grateful for her helping nags and she'll be filled with sanctimonious glee.

Fuck Jim Bruer's colon with a broken whiskey bottle.
He forgets things, has difficulty concentrating, he doesn't think before he acts, and his attitude for various subjects is he could not care less.
In other words, he behaved like a teenage boy... oh the humanity.
Personally, I'm unconvinced by the "pot made me a burnout who flunked all my classes" line.
I've known several people (ahem) who were regular pot smokers, even up to the wake 'n' bake level, through college who did just fine. Some even got into top-name grad/professional schools. In fact, we used to joke about how the correlation between pot/general carousing and good grades sure looked a positive one, to us.
Lazy unmotivated people exist with and without pot. Correlation does not equal causation.
^ THIS ^
I was a daily smoker in college, I also was an A student. Granted, I was at San Diego State... Don't judge me!!!
The sheer number of people with high (see what I did there) 6-figure incomes whom I personally know that partake on a consistant basis tells me she's incorrect. Does her anecdotal experience outweigh mine?
Shorter Rocio: My mom told me I could never change a man and I vowed to prove her wrong. And since I'm a teenager and thus can't be wrong, it must be the devilweed!
Quoth Einstein:
Women marry men thinking they will change, men marry women thinking they never will. Both invariably end up disappointed.
People are different. Pot comes in many varieties which can affect you differently. Situations are different. Too many variables to say definitively that pot will/won't make you a stupid burnout.
Based only on the excerpts of the op-ed, I think it was a good piece. Yes, pot has been a factor in many people destroying their lives. Also, pot is used responsibly by many people. At the end of the day it should be your choice and if you develop a problem then voluntary treatment should be available. Yep - I agree 100%.
Yes, pot has been a factor in many people destroying their lives but only when they are arrested for possession and forced into the legal system.

Dude, if most grown-up journos can't distinguish between correlation and causation, it's kind of unfair to expect a 17-year-old to.
Well either they can't, which makes them bad journalists or they can and don't which makes them bad people.
Now, THAT is is excruciating.
Well either they can't, which makes them bad journalists stupid
FIFY
Soft bigotry of low expectations!!!1!1!!
When I was in HS, it seemed like most of the top cx debaters in the country smoked weed. Those were some of the most intelligent and hardest working people I have ever met.
I read a 10 year study that looked at the IQ of middle schoolers and the cannabis smoking habits they acquired. The ones that didn't smoke had no change, the ones that smoked moderately had an increase in IQ, and the ones that smoked heavily had a decrease in IQ. Smoking pot 1-2 times a week will make you smarter than not smoking pot at all. Anecdotal evidence of the mathematics PhD students I know confirm this.
Why should we offer "free" treatment?
Pot is not physically addictive.
Because it's not worth paying for.
"Marijuana addiction takes down a lot of people, not just the smoker."
It also builds up a lot of people, like pizza shops and the makers of all manner of cheap snack foods.
These are unfair stereotypes. My favorite food when I'm high is lobster bisque, which is anything but cheap.
True, but as a bemonocled libertarian, you roll your joints with the removed skin of child laborers, so it impacts the nature of the high and the subsequent food cravings differently.
You smoke your joints with the skin of child laborers? You Philistine! I prefer mine to be rolled in the skin of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.
Skin just doesn't give a good, even burn. I save my seal skin for my humidor. I used to roll my joints with hundred dollar bills, but those just don't seem as decadent as they used to.
I smoked pot when I was a young'un. Generally just on the weekend, and with friends. I know of numerous young people who are of the "wake and bake" variety and they are fucking useless. Prior to the excessive weed use they were decent kids. Now, they're just stoned all the time, have a hard time keeping a job, and are really annoying to be around.
Pot needs to be legal, but it isn't harmless.
Pot needs to be legal, but it isn't harmless.
That's an excellent straw man you've got there.
The argument isn't that it's harmless. I've yet to hear anyone advance that.
Now, it is LESS harmful than alcohol and there isn't an argument you can make against cannabis that you can't make against alcohol, but everyone already recognizes the futility of banning liquor.
It's also a case of the medicine killing the patient. For all the troubles that legal cannabis might bring, the troubles of prohibition are so much worse.
Maybe bad wording, but not a straw man. There were several posts above mine discussing the success of people who had smoked pot. I don't doubt this is the case, I was merely pointing out there is another side to it.
I agree it is less harmful than alcohol.
I agree that prohibition is worse.
My point is simply that pot plays a part in negative consequences for some people. It should be approached with some caution.
I agree. Pot is not harmless. Should be legal (as well as coke, heroin, etc.) But yeah, I've got a friend that has serious emotional problems, that I suspect are tied to his cannabis usage.
OK, now everyone can yell at me. Correlation is not causation. But I've known this dude for 20 years, and I think the weed truly is the cause of his occasional psychotic breaks.
Use caution.
Not me, but... well, some guy I know told me that perhaps the link is causal - but it runs the other way. Namely, that someone who's experienced emotional issues might be more likely to continue smoking into adulthood if they even just believe that it helps keep the demons at bay.
I - my friend... indicattes that those hooked (not users) on herion might simply be running from more numerous and frightening demons that... that friend I mentioned above.
Of course, this is just pothead's opinion.
This^^^
Seconded. I dealt with a lot of shit in college, and my grades were a bit shit. But I would say that I used pot to medicate for that- the grades weren't pot' fault, pot was just a way to deal with huge levels of stress and depression and anxiety.
Hey, my father according to stories I have heard had some emotional and psychological issues even when he was a teen but then came back after 2 tours in Vietnam with a raging case of PTST that went undiagnosed for 30 years.
So he self medicated, using either alcohol or Pot.
When he was stoned we had a pretty good life, when he was drunk, well lets just say there were nights I had to jury rig an alarm on my bedroom door to ensure that I'd wake up if it were opened and slept with my baseball bat at my side.
To a drug warrior, of course all his problems are marajuana induced psychosis.
I didn't smoke pot when I was very young. Never did much of it, to be honest with you. I know numerous people that have never smoked pot and they are fucking useless. Prior to their adolescence, they were decent kids. Now they're just texting all the time, have a hard time keeping a job, and are really annoying to be around.
Being a typical teen needs to be legal, but it isn't harmless.
I know people that get up and have a drink in the morning. It's not the substance, it's the person.

High School Girl Thinks Current Boyfriend Can Molded Into Better Boyfriend. News at 11.
I really hate it when teenagers say things like "our youth." I've had seen so many online screeds written by teenagers or lonely 20-somethings that cry about "our children."
Two things:
1. Welcome back, Lucy. We've missed you a great deal.
2. It's scare tactic, bullshit anecdotal opinion pieces like this that prey on the fears and apprehensions of parents too disinterested to know what their kids are actually doing that perpetuates a failed drug policy that destroys lives of people before they even have a chance to enter the real world.
Lucy was being nice, but I'll say it: Fuck this girl that hasn't enough life experience to know what causes harm, what helps people cope and what lifestyle choices have positive and negative consequences for teens, let alone adult, drug users. She is a naive little fool that comes to the right conclusion merely by chance, and places the solution to the "pot problem" at the feet of a government that has mishandled it for decades.
Come on, sloopy... Naively espousing about things without the requisite life experience is what being a 17-year-old is all about. Shame on the paper for actually publishing it.
Also, I fell for a lot of that shit when I was in high school. Then in college I had an internship at NASA and discovered that people there smoked pot, and I quickly realized that most of what I was taught (be it about drugs or otherwise) was bullshit. Her bubble will burst soon enough.
I had the same experience. I was rabidly anti-drug in high school. Took until my junior year of college before I decided it would be cool to try weed. And I was in Turkey at the time. Apparently Midnight Express hadn't made much of an impression on me.
You just wanted to stab someone in the ass. Don't deny it.
Doubleplus this.
I mean, what the fuck? Does the Mercury News no longer employ professional copy editors? Or was this printed in some kind of section reserved for the pure, raw language of the young peoplez?
(Oh, how I adore the yummy, yummy tears of the virgins who have never before been firmly edited.)
He forgets things, has difficulty concentrating, he doesn't think before he acts, and his attitude for various subjects is he could not care less.
IOW he's a typical male teenager.
Hell I knew people in college who occasionally smoked MJ and were Aerospace Engineering majors. Any activity can cause distractions when engaged in to excess, but this girl seems to imply that if only they hadn't smoked the wacky weed they would have maybe been theoretical physicists instead of "just" aerospace engineers.
Or in the case of her boyfriend, he could have worked the register at Jack In The Box rather than be stuck on fries.
"I flunk English, I'm outta here. Kiss college goodbye. I don't know what I'll do. Dad will be pissed off. Mom will be heartbroken. If I play my cards right, I get maybe a six-month grace period and then I gotta get a job, and you know what that means. That's right, they start me at the drive-up window and I gradually work my way up from shakes to burgers, and then one day my lucky break comes: the french fry guy dies and they offer me the job! But the day I'm supposed to start, some men come by in a black Lincoln Continental and tell me I can make a quick $300 just for driving a van back from Mexico! When I get out of jail, I'm 36 years old. Living in a flop house. No job. No home. No upward mobility. Very few teeth. And then one day they find me, face down, talking to the gutter, clutching a bottle of paint thinner. And why? Because you wouldn't help me in English, no! You were too busy to help me! Too busy to help a drowning man!"
A blast from the past, even if Daphne Zuniga dressed like shit in it.
"Come to Momma, boys!"
How would you like to have a sexual encounter so intense it could conceivably change your political views?
"Where else are you going to find 'scoops of flesh?'"
"Sorry I'm late. There was this big problem...and I'm late because of it."
"You think I got nothing better to do with my life then to sit here and pass the time with you, SHIT-BRAAAIN?!?"
"Hi, I'm Gary Cooper, but not the Gary Cooper that's dead."
Seriously, what the hell happened to her? After Spaceballs, she disappeared. And that was after Vision Quest and The Sure Thing got her career started.
She must have been a real asshole or she refused to let the right casting agent put his dick in her.
She was on Melrose Place for most of the 90s. She never made it back out of the TV ghetto.
She's had solid, steady TV work the entire time. She just hasn't been doing movies.
Well, she was in both Vision Quest and Gross Anatomy. No one's career survives two Matthew Modine movies fully intact.
Don't forget the wonder that was The Fly II!
Melrose was at least 5 years after Spaceballs. That's a pretty big hole in the prime (mid-late 20's) of someone's career.
She was in a few shitty movies right after Spaceballs, then stumbled onto MP before flaming out completely. Drugs, shitty management, shitty boyfriend... take your pick... there are a thousand ways to consign yourself to oblivion in Hollywood.
She makes a shitload of Lifetime type movies.
She didn't have a bad career, considering she looks like my fucking ass.
There's really not much more irritating than a preachy teen. Maybe soccer moms, because soccer moms are evil and irritating.
"her grafs of awkward prose"
Thought this was Joe'z Law at first. Then I realized you were just using IM speak for a word (paragraphs) which you were simply too lazy/cool to type.
That's not IM-speak, it's editor-speak.
Hash everyday before university classes. Straight A's.
If Ms. Cocaine and Mr. Speed got married, would she become Mrs. Speed? Ms. Speed-Cocaine?
I was more thinking along the lines of:
What if Ms. Cocaine got knocked up by that dastardly Mr. Smack down the street?
Baby Speedball.
Speedballing is the mixing of speed and opiates. It's more likely that Baby Speedball is the result of the frequent mid-day visits to Ms. Cocaine by Postman Heroin.
Pot needs to be legal, but it isn't harmless.
The problem is that even if kids that smoke pot suddenly don't give a damn about "fulfilling their potential", I fail to see how you're entitled to classify that as a "harm".
They're making a choice among alternatives and not choosing the one you want them to. Oh noes!
This guy doesn't owe this girl shit. If she doesn't like the way he lives his life, she can go get a different boyfriend.
He's under no obligation to "reach his potential" or anything else. She doesn't get to go around sobbing that she somehow has been "harmed" because this guy chooses a lifestyle where he's not building a suspension bridge every day to impress her.
Ironic choice of words in the final sentence, one of my best friends is a bridge engineer and, even though it's my fault he got started smoking daily, he now smokes more than I did.
Marijuana does lead to harder things: like graduate school.
I wish I had smoked through graduate school, it would have made it less excruciating.
Really, you can't imagine a single scenario where the inclusion of pot use creates negative effects that otherwise would not be there? As soon as children can hold a joint, they should be smoking? Airline pilots, heavy equipment operators, physicians? Or, people who might not be as well equipped to handle reality as some others use pot to "escape" from things they really should deal with? List the physiological and psychological effects of pot use. Can you not fathom any situation where those effects would lead to less desirable outcomes?
He forgets things, has difficulty concentrating, he doesn't think before he acts, and his attitude for various subjects is he could not care less. It jeopardizes his relationships and the people around him, making things critical and unstable.
First serious relation, luv? That's not a stoner, that's a dude.
I was going to respond, but I forgot what I was gonna say because I was too busy playing a video game while I should've been working, and frankly, I couldn't give a fuck.
Trapper: You gotta ask yourself, are those nipple clamps the right size for you?
Hawkeye: I don't care anymore. 've you seen my pants lying around?
Honestly, that sounds like undiagnosed ADD, and a lot of people with ADD self-medicate (in part because ADD medication is often ineffective or the side effects ain't worth it. I know that, as an adult, I still have it, but it does more good than harm, expect when it comes to insomnia. But I think one of the problems is people think shit like ADD is purely a hinderance, wheras in actuality it can be a different way of thinking that helps you- think of how John Nash still sees his medication for schiczophrenia as dulling him a bit and it probably does).
I rarely tell a dude to keep a beard because most look like shit. However, that one looks sharp, and accentuates your cheekbones rather nicely.
No homo
D'oh. Lucy is not a dude, and is only a beard in the sense that she is dating or will at some point date a DC dude.
Hehe.
Please, dear, dear Lucy... at least don't date a guy with a fixie. Those ones have something wrong up in their brains.
+brazillion
FYI: Ralph Wylie is the name of that sneering, insane pothead character in the 'Reefer Madness' movie. Needless to say this story and that picture made my day. Thanks Lucy!
As has already been mentioned already, while pot should be legal (IMHO all drugs should), the idea that it doesn't have a harmful side to it is just wrong. I've done my share of things over the years and just about all of them have their drawbacks if the wrong person picks them up. I've watched more than a few friends transform after they started smoking into really uninteresting and unmotivated losers. Their life trajectory was changed for the worse.
The mistake for those that want to legalize is denying reality. That just makes the argument weak because it comes across as disingenuous.
This is where somebody chimes in that nobody is saying that pot has no negative side effects to be followed by others saying that pot has no negative side effects.

No, dude, you (like our Lord and Savior above) don't get to say, for your few friends, that marijuana was harmful because it "unmotivated" them.
You just don't get to decide how "motivated" people are supposed to be.
It's not a "harm" to you if somebody else decides they'd rather smoke pot than work on being a Type A high achiever. Because they don't owe you a damn thing.
You can decide that for yourself, but not for anybody else.
If they prefer smoking pot to going to MIT, that's their choice, and it is reflexively justified as "not-a-harm" by the fact that they choose it. Since they choose smoking pot, they obviously value it more than the available alternatives.
There's this idea out there - and it's quite insane, actually - that there is some Platonic Form of perfect productivity that people can achieve, and if they decide not to achieve it they're "cheating" the people around them. It's complete nonsense morally.
Evidently I wasn't clear in my comment. I believe that all drugs should be legal. Everything. Pot, cocaine, meth...everything. I think the war on drugs and drug laws in general are wrong and have a terribly negative impact on people and society. My comments have nothing to do with me wanting to impose my values or morality on anybody. I think everybody should have the right to throw their life completely down the toilet.
But it would be dishonest for me to say that I think pot is completely safe for everybody. From my experience with friends and even myself, I've seen negative effects. I've also known very successful people that smoke with no evident effects and I have no problem with it at all.
I know when I quit smoking that my outlook on the world changed for the better. I just looked at things differently. And for me, I preferred that to how I saw things when I was smoking. It's personal preference.
