GOP-Controlled Legislature Passes a Medical Marijuana Bill; Democratic Governor Plans to Veto It
This week the Republican-controlled New Hampshire House of Representatives passed a medical marijuana bill by a lopsided vote of 236 to 96, one day after Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, threatened to veto the legislation. Last month the state Senate approved the bill, which would let patients with "debilitating medical conditions" or their "designated caregivers" grow and possess up to six ounces at a time, by a vote of 13 to 11, with all five Democrats and eight Republicans in favor. The number of yes votes in the House, where nearly three-quarters of the seats are held by Republicans, is enough to overcome a veto (which requires a two-thirds majority), but the bill's supporters need to get three more votes in the Senate. If they manage to do that, New Hampshire will become the 17th state to allow medical use of marijuana. Lynch successfully vetoed a similar bill in 2009.
Democrats were actually more likely than Republicans to vote for the the bill, but there aren't enough of them to pass anything on their own, let alone achieve a veto-proof majority. In absolute numbers, the bill got more votes from Republicans than from Democrats. In New Hampshire, then, medical marijuana is a cause supported mainly by Republicans and opposed by the state's most prominent Democrat (who perhaps is taking his cues from the country's most prominent Democrat). Weird, right? Why would the party that supposedly favors a smaller, less intrusive government want to let sick people grow their own medicine?

FoE, this reminds me of that time you tried to drill a hole through your head.
It would have worked if you hadn't have stopped him.
Besides, he get pleasure from collecting spores, mold, and fungus.
You know, you don't act like a scientist, doc. You're more like a game show host.
Back off man, I'm a scientist. BTW, dear Epi, are you menstruating right now?
Look, I don't have to take this abuse from you. I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.
Yes, it's true. Our governor has no dick.
Well, that's what I heard.
Nah, he's got one but it's a prosthesis.
That's just great, Epi. Actual, physical contact. Can you move?
Sorry, doc, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought.
Figures. I don't think you're human.
Are you a god?
Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrani, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKettrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
Epi, if someone asks you if you are a God, you say yes.
On a side note, jelly donuts are so fucking tasty.
Is FoE a British reaper?
I'm going bring this up with the Tenant's Association. You're not supposed to have pets in the blog.

I know I shouldn't say this, but when pols threaten this stuff, I hope they get a chronic, painful, debilitating condition that requires PX meds.
I know med MJ isn't the panacea of "legalize all 'illicit' drugs now, OTC" that most posters here would like, but this type of common sense legislation is a step in the right direction.
It really sickens me to see all the recalcitrant posturing. The cynic in me thinks the GOP legislature proposed this legislation hoping it would get shot down as well as dealers silently objecting to the legislation to keep the price of MJ artificially high.

My only gripe with the Prop 19 in CA was the aim of using it as revenue-enhancement; give those turkeys more money and they'll spend that plus X%.
Regardless, perfect-vs-good, I voted for it, but there is no doubt the growers in the emerald triangle did what they could to defeat it.
i think framing med mj as a revenue enhancer is an EXCELLENT tactic
For whom?
Not for anyone who doesn't work for the government.
for getting it passed, just like i think it's good way to frame legalization.
Wasn't one of the reasons booze was legalized was because the govt needed the tax revenue during a lousy economy?
I'm sure the GOP dominating Texas will start coming around any day now...
...by which I mean, coming around, to my house, at 2 a.m., with a SWAT team.
And before anyone says anything about my dogs, I have a pair of mastiffs (300 lbs combined, an English and a Tibetan, the latter of which is particularly bloody-minded), so those assholes better come with more than some pussy-ass MP5s, 'cause my boyz ain't goin' down just from a few 9 mils.
Wait, Jimbo, I thought it was your wife who was 300lbs. Now I'm confused. Is your wife a dog?
No, just a fat furry. Understandable mistake.
Your wife is from Tibet, Jim? Huh. I was under the impression she was Chinese.
So much for Democrats being the pa... hahaha,... yeah, I couldn't even finish that.
Gotta love those bought and paid for corrupt pompous windbags lol.

But Paul Waldman just said the Democrats are the cool kids. Where I come from all the cool kids smoke weed.
Lynch is a dick. He's pretty popular because he avoids doing anything controversial. And he's been governor for a long time. I'm glad he finally is not running this time.
An interesting thing about the NH state government is that every elected office has 2 year terms and there is a 2 year budget cycle. It will be interesting to see what happens this year. There are actually several Free Stater types among the Republicans in the legislature. It would be nice if they managed to stick around.
" In New Hampshire, then, medical marijuana is a cause supported mainly by Republicans and opposed by the state's most prominent Democrat (who perhaps is taking his cues from the country's most prominent Democrat). Weird, right?"
When a GOP President was leading the War On Drugs (WOD), Democrats across the country supported "compassionate use medical marijuana." Now that a Democrat President is leading the Public Health Approach On Drugs (PHAOD), the GOP supports "compassionate use."
Weird indeed...
Dems are liberals, they are not statist progressive authoritarians. Shrike said so.
"Shrike said so."
If shriek hasn't claimed to look west for the sunrise, it's only since s/he hasn't yet had time.
Give him/her a bit; it'll happen.
This was true in reverse spinning earth which occured previous to the epoch of snowball earth. Don't you watch history channel dude? That is where I learned about how aliens helped the Peruvians levitate giant stones weighing 10 million tons and cut through pure diorite, which is harder than diamonds.

Today I learned that there's a douchebag named "John Lynch" who lacks the decency to leave people the hell alone when they seek relief from suffering. I'd love to watch Gary Johnson kick his ass.

John Lynch and Lindsey Graham in a caged death match tag team against Gary Johnson and Adam Kokesh. What would that look like?
It would last for about 1/4 of a second before Lynch and Graham were curled up in the fetal position, crying for their mommies.

I read that story, some Survivor murdered his poor wife and daughter then burned his house down with their bodies in it. Then Mastermind went and hid in his magical long-planned bunker in the woods.
Of course Murphy's Law intruded, the raging fire failed to cook his computer and hard drive inside, which of course Mad Genius had full of photos of his secret lair, for Twitter or his Neo-Klan buddies or whatever.
Durp.
Wait...New Hampshire has a HoR with over 300 members in it??? Win The Future??
Know your NH civics.
400 members, actually.
Personally, I think it's a good idea.

It is nice to see true conservatives who understand that cannabis use should be a decision that is made by the individual. This is a serious topic, and so many that suffer needlessly and end up with severe narcotic addictions now have a better choice. Cannais is the least toxic method of pain management / wellness. Cannabis programs can provide jobs, tax revenue, safe acces for the sick and charitable giving to the communities.
Listen to the dying pleading for safe access to medical cannabis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4el6EGqcUw&
Thease are the people who benifit from a well thought out cannabis program.
I guess Republicans are no longer the dopes they once were.
What amazes me is that New Hampshire, with a population of 1,318,194, apparently has 332 members of its State House of Representatives. Do they really need that many?
These guys jsut are not making a lot of sense man, I mean like none.
