You know Pants, it is just not enough to find a song/band that has the appropriate on topic word in it, it also has to be a good song/band.
Please forgive me

Fuck Santorum.
Also that poll is only of Republicans so the fact that RP is 22 is pretty good. The other polls show him getting almost half of independents and most Democrats who intend to switch.
Other things I've noticed from the polls: He comes second with evangelicals. He wins every age group but 65+ and handily so the younger it gets. Win or lose the overall nomination that is pretty nice. It also means that the people attacking him and his supporters are being pretty retarded. Kneecapping your young supporters seems pretty short sighted.

Kyle Victor says ending the Fed is "not a principled libertarian stand" and "would harm America's export-oriented manufacturing sector" while enriching "the usual darlings of the Republican Party: Wall Street and Wal-Mart."
That's retarded. Enriching Wall Street is the only thing the FED does.
Central Banks are *so* libertarian, Kyle...
Since when was Wall Street a darling of the GOP? Isn't it a darling of the Dems? Not that that makes it any better/worse, just pointing that out.
The funniest thing about that article is that a stronger dollar would help most Americans given that we're, by far, a net importer. So, ignoring the train wreck of nonsense in the bigger picture, even if you give him wide latitude, his argument still isn't even internally consistent.

I don't think so:

"I'm not always a big fan of dissecting individual polls ? mostly because there are liable to be a plethora of them in Iowa and New Hampshire over the next several days and their errors will tend to be mitigated as more are added to the average.
Nevertheless, the new CNN poll of Iowa contains a methodological quirk that is worth bringing to your attention and which will probably result in the survey underestimating the support for Ron Paul.
The issue is that CNN's Iowa poll was conducted by using a list of registered Republican voters and registered Republicans only:
Sample was drawn from the complete list of registered Republican voters provided by the Iowa Secretary of State.
What's wrong with using a list of Republican voters for a Republican caucus poll? The answer is that it's extremely easy for independent and Democratic voters to register or re-register as Republicans at the caucus site. Historically, a fair number of independent voters do this."
One hundred percent of likely voters said if the caucuses were held today, they'd be totally caught off-guard.

Read some more doom and gloom about the movie industry after a supposedly disappointing Christmas box office.
I'm thinking and I cannot for the life of me find any movie this year that truly stands out. I enjoyed 'War Horse' a lot, but it's just a good movie, not a great one. I think The Muppets is the best reviewed movie of the year at Rotten Tomatoes.
Hugo was fun, though not *great.*
Idiot me! Atlas Shrugged, though it didn't make a profit.
Oh yeah, Atlas Shrugged is now availible at Red Box. Definitely going to have to check that out.
I found the movie disappointing. Personally, I think the ideas would have come across better if it had been set in the time of the book instead of modern day, as an alternate history or something.
It probably would have worked much better as a miniseries on HBO.
Agreed.
That was the most irritating part of the movie--it just went from one setpiece to the next without any real drama. Christ, they left out the best part of the whole damn book, which isn't Galt's 100-page soliloquy, it's D'Anconia's speech on money. Anyone who's never read the book wouldn't really give a shit about the protagonists or why their opponents are so god-awful because it was all just glossed over to get to the "critical" scenes.
This is why I think the biggest moneymakers these days are comic book movies, kids movies, and rom-coms--because they're built for a quick, superficial viewing where people can just turn off their brains for a couple hours. The cable stations are kicking the film industry's ass when it comes to creating stories of real drama and depth, because they can stretch the storyline out over 8-10 hours or more, giving the characters and plot more depth.
Look at the Spartacus series that came out on Starz--a lot of gratuitous schlock that would have killed it if it had been compressed into a 2.5 hour film. But because they were able to do a series, by the end of the season the audience actually gave a shit about the characters, even the ones they were supposed to dislike. And the Slave War is a perfect story to focus a 3-4 season series on, because it really does work out almost like a three-act theater play. If they do this right, the second season would end with the defeat of Glaber on Mt. Vesuvius, and the third season on the final defeat of the slaves by Crassus (could be stretched out to four seasons, given that the Slave War lasted three years). Movies just can't accomplish that development on the same level anymore.
Completely agree. For me the best dramas I've seen have been TV shows like Lost, BSG, and the too-short lived BSG spin-off Caprica.
Spartacus certainly got better durign its first season and I'm hoping the show can sustain itself without John Hannah and, sadly, the late Andy Whitfield.
Spartacus certainly got better durign its first season and I'm hoping the show can sustain itself without John Hannah and, sadly, the late Andy Whitfield.
I was actually shocked at how well the story developed as the season progressed. I had rented it initially just because I'll check out anything related to ancient Rome once, even if it's horrible. By the last episode, I went to Target and bought it immediately.
Agree about John Hannah and Andy Whitfield--it's going to be interesting to see how the other villians pick up the slack, and there's going to be a tremendous amount of pressure on the guy they pick for Crassus. Olivier absolutely owned that role in the movie and should have gotten an Academy Award.
I'm sure it's just that the book is unfilmable, not that libertarians are no-talent assclowns. (It is already a miniseries btw.)
Let's face it, it's not the characters or the plot that excite in AS, so you can't expect a film version to do better. It's the authoritarian shouting of principles at us that we like. A is A! I never thought of it like that before!
Tony, the day I ask for your input is the day I ask Newt Gingrich for marriage advice.
make sure she is young and pretty enough to be first lady.
oh, also no cancer.
The funny thing Tony is that we see in American films this archetype of a heroic individual standing up alone in the face of collectivism. And while maybe in the past challenging authority was considered liberal, the fact remains that today liberals are mostly just collectivist sheep that embrace authority and castigate those that challenge it provided that they're people are the ones in charge.
So no, pisshead, the best cinema typically focuses on the individual despite the efforts of collectivist scumbags to make individuality appear evil.
I agree on Spartacus. That show as a movie would have been garbage but it turns out it is pretty good.
They never could.
I wanted to see AS as a miniseries too. I think AMC or HBO could have done well with it. The story needs the long speeches and you can only fit them in when you have the time on TV.
, as an alternate history or something.
Steampunk!
I've seen about 5 movies in the theater in the last 10 years. There are so few worth making the effort for, and those are better viewed on a home theater system.
I agree, although seeing a movie Christmas night is sort of a tradition for me and my parents.
Prior to War Horse I had only seen two other movies this year in theatres: "The Descendents", a good movie with Clooney, and "Take Shelter", a really good movie with Michael Shannon. Both should get Best Actor Oscar noms.
I used to love going to the movies. It's so expensive now that you can get better bang for the buck seeing a live play in a five-to-ten-part theater. It's about ten dollars more for a show where actual people work live to keep your attention, usually with a halfway decent script.
If you want to get me back into a movie theater start charging $7 for a ticket again.
It was $11 for the ticket when I saw 'War Horse'. But hopefully the disappointing return will convince theatres to lower prices since its getting to the point where they can't rely on blockbusters alone to bring in patrons. The only movie event on the horizon that I can see instantly filling seats is The Dark Knight Rises and maybe the 3D re-re-re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Other than that all the movie posters I saw in the theatre lobby looked like crap or at most not worth spending money on.
The Avengers might be fun, but since it's Joss Whedon producing it, I'm expecting him to go back to his tried and true group dynamic formula, with Iron Man serving as the Buffy/Malcolm Reynolds/Angel proxy.
Meh. For me I won't see a movie unless I'm convinced that it will either deeply move me with a compelling story or completely immerse me in spectacle and techincal mastery.
Chris Nolan has proven he can do both with the Batman franchise, but I can't imagine The Avengers doing the same simply because the genre is getting tiresome with each Marvel movie being produced.
I saw Captain America in the theater and had a great time. The rest I see are G rated with my kid which is always fun. But no 3D for us. Not worth it at all. If we want three dimensions we'll play outside.
I say this on every movie thread: we have Alamo Drafthouse here where not only are the tickets cheap ($6 student, $7 regular) but you also get a large selection of microbrews and cocktails, good food and no under 18 allowed. Pretty fantastic concept and unless liquor laws elsewhere prevent it I have to imagine the concept will spread. Actually I think they just opened up their first locations outside of Texas in VA and Denver.
In my hometown there used to be a similar place (opened up in about 1997 or so). Great concept. I don't know if they're still in business though.
My movie viewing is mostly on TCM.
One of the good things about being a classic movie buff is that my nieces and nephews won't already have the DVDs I pick out for them.
I used to give classic movie DVDs to my nieces and nephew. They gave 'em all back. They get $20s or $50s now depending on my Fall income.
I have Amazon and Netflix. Why in the world would I leave my house to watch a movie?
War Horse is probably the best of the lot that I saw this year, and even then it wasn't that great.
I'm curious to see how good the version of Coriolanus that's coming out next month is. The setting seems fairly appropriate, but if Fiennes did any MTV-style direction on this, it's going to suck.
Damn sock
For me reimagined settings of Shakespeare are pretty hit or miss. I hated Julie Taymor's Titus and Tempest adaptations but very much enjoyed Patrick Stewart in the BBC's recent take on MacBeth.
Fiennes' Coriolanus looks pretty good from a production standpoint, although I can't tell if they kept the Shakespearean dialogue and speech patterns.
Agreed. You know why Branagh's Henry V is so awesome, while the McKellan version of Richard III is so tedious? Because Branagh kept the actual historical setting rather than try to cram a modern sensibility onto it where it didn't necessarily fit.
Shakespeare's appeal is that the themes of the human condition he explored are universal, so it's way too easy to think, "Gee, how would this apply in a modern context?" Ultimately I think that's just a lazy approach because the directors are intimidated by the prospect of trying to put themselves in the timeframe of Elizabethan England and understand that society's sensibilities.
Because the best investment I can think of is to park my cash in the ECB. WtF?
Hard telling.
The ECB seems to have made it clear it's not going to buy screwy paper. The Fed hasn't.
Hard telling.

Link doesn't work for me. Thank goodness John doesn't do evening links. I'd have to concur to his obsession with starlets of old on that one.
Ava Gardner was much better.
Ur fucking stupid, Ava Gardner was beastly ugly.
She was the only woman to make a monkey out of Frank Sinatra. That doesn't count for anything?
Hedy Lamarr
Not bad. Gene Tierney was also pretty good.
Goddamn
Gene played some cool roles, too. I particularly liked her in Laura.
Tierney is shockingly evil in Leave Her to Heaven.
I always thought a young Bette Davis was stunning.
Cool. I've never seen that.
I think Three on a Match has been released to one of the pre-Code box sets. It's got a scene of Davis on a bed changing out of her stockings; if memory serves she's only wearing a shift.
The movie also has early Humphrey Bogart making an oblique reference to drug use and some entertainingly shocking pre-Code stuff.
Very sexy, though I've always been more of an Ingrid Bergman fan myself for old movie stars:

She was also brilliant, earning a patent for the development of the spread-spectrum technology that's used nowadays in cell phones. (She and her collaborator were looking for a way to guide torpedoes in World War II.)
That's Hedley!
Took one of you long enough.
I was genuinely surprised someone hadn't alread made the Blazing Saddles reference. I would posit that whenever someone mentions the name Hedy Lamarr on an internet forum someone will inevitably say that exact line.
LOL. That is what I was thinking....
Strange. Curious about her Wikipedia entry, I see something that I'm fairly sure is inaccurate. Gardner's maternal grandmother was a Spanish migrant, I recall my own grandmother telling me. Those sultry dark looks could not have been born of the Scots-Irish. Maybe Black Irish would get you close, but the Scots blood would have definitely rubbed that out without a strong infusion of Spanish to counter the soiled genes (sorry banjos, I'm sure you are beautiful in ways not pertaining to melanin).
Well yes, but thanks to my WOP genes, I am also beautiful in ways that are.
(sorry banjos, I'm sure you are beautiful in ways not pertaining to melanin).
You know, like big boobs. I kid. I haven't seen a purely Scots woman in years to make that claim.
Actually, I am Italian, Irish (I don't think Scots), and Norwegian. The WOP genes dominated and gave me dark features.
My bad for assuming. All the Scots-Irish I know are in the alt blue grass scene.
I mean by that they pretty much are the scene.

The Santorum angle is being pushed pretty hard around the internet too. Barf.
Just three hours. Gotta wonder about the background story to that one.
The endorsement is good news for Paul. The "neocons" are claiming all his support is from dirty smelly occutard hippies. High profile hard right conservative endorsements are what he needs right now to pick up the vast "anybody but Romney" GOP vote. Paul is looking at something a bit better than just a "plausible path" to victory right now.

There should also be a picture of Hedy Lamar in every home, to make women feel bad about themselves.
Hey Guys! I just read Oliver Twist, and I have some awesome policy ideas. Just wait til I'm the nominee and can present them to the American people.

Given that the American People are too, uh, challenged, to understand my simple explanations, they most certainly will not respond to your presentation.

16 year old Occutard and her mother interrupt Ron Paul even in Des Moines.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....f=politics
Do you think you can ever introduce a 16year old to libertarianism when you refer to her as part of the 'Occutard' movement?
I wouldn't call her that to her face if I was trying to reason with her. And that's really the trick. Some people are willing to listen to reason, others aren't. It's as simple as that.
Mocking her for her ridiculous beliefs will either maker her critically analyze them and come around, or just maker her seek validation from authority figures like public school teachers, Marxoid professors, and her Occutard mother that's probably been indoctrinating her with this 99% nonsense.
A 16 year old knows how to google, and likely is' teenager' enough to read everything that is written on her little field trip with her mama.
The lack of focus and honesty of that movement is the point that should be made to get her to think, not to cry
-FFS she's 16!
Re: rather,
She may find out about the blessings of courting librarians that way.
(I'm just kidding)
Yes, she's 16. I happen to be 20 and am a reformed neo-con. So if I can find my way from neo-con to libertarian I'm sure she can be cured of left-wing populism.

The panic is fun to watch; Dick Morris freaked out on Fox today
In the related videos section on the Ron Paul's character video was a great bit by Jon Stewart from back in August about how the media was blatantly ignoring Ron Paul and swooning over Bachmann and Perry.
It's more hilarious today than ever.
Well, that, and finding that two polls had different results that were both within the large margin of error means that the numbers don't mean much.
If you're up by 1% one day with a margin of plus or minus 7 percent, then down the next day by 3% with the same margin of error, it's just statistics 101 to conclude you can't tell who is ahead because the uncertainty is so large.

ending the Fed is "not a principled libertarian stand" and "would harm America's export-oriented manufacturing sector" while enriching "the usual darlings of the Republican Party: Wall Street and Wal-Mart."
My son was telling me about my mother-in-law, a Democratic former politician, going off on a 45 minute anti-WalMart rant after my son had the temerity to suggest that people getting to buy stuff there cheaper than if they went elsewhere was a good thing. She insisted on how WalMart was absolutely evil, and the enemy of unions, and how they should be shut down.
The very next day, she shows up at the farm toting five bags full of stuff she'd just bought at WalMart, because, you know, they're cheaper than everywhere else, oblivious to the irony.
