That was the most irritating part of the movie--it just went from one setpiece to the next without any real drama. Christ, they left out the best part of the whole damn book, which isn't Galt's 100-page soliloquy, it's D'Anconia's speech on money. Anyone who's never read the book wouldn't really give a shit about the protagonists or why their opponents are so god-awful because it was all just glossed over to get to the "critical" scenes.

This is why I think the biggest moneymakers these days are comic book movies, kids movies, and rom-coms--because they're built for a quick, superficial viewing where people can just turn off their brains for a couple hours. The cable stations are kicking the film industry's ass when it comes to creating stories of real drama and depth, because they can stretch the storyline out over 8-10 hours or more, giving the characters and plot more depth.

Look at the Spartacus series that came out on Starz--a lot of gratuitous schlock that would have killed it if it had been compressed into a 2.5 hour film. But because they were able to do a series, by the end of the season the audience actually gave a shit about the characters, even the ones they were supposed to dislike. And the Slave War is a perfect story to focus a 3-4 season series on, because it really does work out almost like a three-act theater play. If they do this right, the second season would end with the defeat of Glaber on Mt. Vesuvius, and the third season on the final defeat of the slaves by Crassus (could be stretched out to four seasons, given that the Slave War lasted three years). Movies just can't accomplish that development on the same level anymore.

I was actually shocked at how well the story developed as the season progressed. I had rented it initially just because I'll check out anything related to ancient Rome once, even if it's horrible. By the last episode, I went to Target and bought it immediately.

Agree about John Hannah and Andy Whitfield--it's going to be interesting to see how the other villians pick up the slack, and there's going to be a tremendous amount of pressure on the guy they pick for Crassus. Olivier absolutely owned that role in the movie and should have gotten an Academy Award.

It was $11 for the ticket when I saw 'War Horse'. But hopefully the disappointing return will convince theatres to lower prices since its getting to the point where they can't rely on blockbusters alone to bring in patrons. I say this on every movie thread: we have Alamo Drafthouse here where not only are the tickets cheap ($6 student, $7 regular) but you also get a large selection of microbrews and cocktails, good food and no under 18 allowed. Actually I think they just opened up their first locations outside of Texas in VA and Denver.

For me reimagined settings of Shakespeare are pretty hit or miss. I hated Julie Taymor's Titus and Tempest adaptations but very much enjoyed Patrick Stewart in the BBC's recent take on MacBeth.

Fiennes' Coriolanus looks pretty good from a production standpoint, although I can't tell if they kept the Shakespearean dialogue and speech patterns.

Agreed. You know why Branagh's Henry V is so awesome, while the McKellan version of Richard III is so tedious? Because Branagh kept the actual historical setting rather than try to cram a modern sensibility onto it where it didn't necessarily fit.

Shakespeare's appeal is that the themes of the human condition he explored are universal, so it's way too easy to think, "Gee, how would this apply in a modern context?" Ultimately I think that's just a lazy approach because the directors are intimidated by the prospect of trying to put themselves in the timeframe of Elizabethan England and understand that society's sensibilities.

NYT: New Iowa Poll May Be Understating Ron Paul's Support (Or Be A Total Fabrication - Who Can Tell These Days???)

I'm not always a big fan of dissecting individual polls ? mostly because there are liable to be a plethora of them in Iowa and New Hampshire over the next several days and their errors will tend to be mitigated as more are added to the average.

Nevertheless, the new CNN poll of Iowa contains a methodological quirk that is worth bringing to your attention and which will probably result in the survey underestimating the support for Ron Paul.

The issue is that CNN's Iowa poll was conducted by using a list of registered Republican voters and registered Republicans only:

Sample was drawn from the complete list of registered Republican voters provided by the Iowa Secretary of State.

What's wrong with using a list of Republican voters for a Republican caucus poll? The answer is that it's extremely easy for independent and Democratic voters to register or re-register as Republicans at the caucus site. Historically, a fair number of independent voters do this.

The news of RP's early demise seem to be slightly exaggerated.

Well, that, and finding that two polls had different results that were both within the large margin of error means that the numbers don't mean much.

If you're up by 1% one day with a margin of plus or minus 7 percent, then down the next day by 3% with the same margin of error, it's just statistics 101 to conclude you can't tell who is ahead because the uncertainty is so large.
