Investors Business Daily reports on President Barack Obama's lame jobs council:
In February, Obama chartered the Jobs and Competitiveness Council with a mission of leaving "no stone unturned" in the search of ways to boost the country's anemic job growth. But you could tell from the start that this council would have trouble even finding those stones, let alone turning them over.
After all, Obama stuffed the group full of Fortune 500 CEOs — General Electric, American Express, DuPont, Time Warner, Eastman Kodak and Xerox, among them. While these may be good companies, they've hardly been roaring engines of job growth. In most cases, in fact, the opposite is true. Some examples:
• GE's domestic workforce shrank by 25,000 — almost 16% — between 2001 and 2010, according to the company's annual reports. (The number of overseas GE jobs climbed over those years.)
• AmEx employed 28% fewer workers in 2010 than it did a decade ago.
• Kodak's workforce cratered to just 18,800 last year from 75,000 in 2001.
• Xerox's employee base shrank by nearly a third between 2001 and 2009, before it acquired Affiliated Computer Services and its 74,000 workers in 2010.
Whole thing, including specific suggestions that might actually swell the ranks of the employed, here.

Yeah I'm sure Kodak's decline is the result of political inteference. Not like being an entire company based on an obsolete technology has anything to do with it.

"I love [...] small-gov, [...]
Lets make Soros Prez!!"
Yep, that Soros is really a small-gov guy:
"According to Soros, market fundamentalism with its assumption that markets will correct themselves with no need for government intervention in financial affairs has been "some kind of an ideological excess"."
The wider point is that big corporations haven't been net job creators in decades, yet Obama's idea of being market-friendly is catering to them, instead of the small and medium sized businesses that create essentially all net job growth.
In fact, their main lobbying group is the Chamber of Commerce, which Obama has been exceptionally hostile to.
I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more....

"Actually that's not far off from what Obama said this morning..."
I'm only surprised he didn't suggest issuing hammers to break windows.
"But what about the three job-creating free-trade agreements Obama has locked up in his desk drawer? How about an immediate cut in corporate and capital gains taxes? Or for that matter any of the many other job creation ideas we detailed in this space last week?"
This is what I've been saying over and over in threads.
Obama is an ideologue. He will never slash the capital gains tax. He will never slash corporate taxes.
He'd rather the ranks of those who are unemployed (and have given up) swelled and swelled. If the only solution to unemployment were slashing the capital gains tax and slashing income taxes and corporate taxes?
Then he'd rather there never were a solution.
That's what he does. That's who he is. He's an ideologue.
Actually some corporations are hesitant to pursue tax changes since taxes manipulate cash flow. Corporations will lobby against changing from one tax regime to another that will hurt short term earnings, even though it would most likely benefit them in the long run.
Some corporations are hesitant to pursue tax changes since taxes manipulate cash flow."
Some corporations make movies involving women with loose morals and barnyard animals.
There are lots of other corporations who really would appreciate a tax cut--especially the smaller ones.
Businesses tend to hire more people when they think they're going to be able to keep more of their profits for the foreseeable future--and anything else they do with the money they keep is better for the economy than whatever the government has been doing with it--that's for sure.
Capital purchases? That's hardly bad for the economy. Hiring more people and expanding? That's not bad for the economy either.
There is no world where corporations--generally speaking--don't want to keep more of their profits. And corporations having high profits isn't the cause of any problem--anywhere in the world.
Artificial market barriers may be a problem--corporations keeping more of their profits just isn't. So if we want to see some economic growth, particularly from small businesses? Letting them count on keeping more of their profits for the foreseeable future is exactly what we should be doing.
I don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
I'm sure there are plenty of corporations who like things the way they are. But there was never a time in any business I've been in when I wanted to keep less of my money.
Every development deal I do is a corporation. I don't need a report to tell me that my investors want their LLC to keep as much of their money as possible. I don't need a report to tell me that the more profits my investors expect to keep, the more they want to invest.
I don't need to pretend there's anything counterintuitive about any of this.
Some corporations like a lot of things--that are bad for the economy. I don't care about that.
Any attempt to make unemployed people more desirable to hire that doesn't involve companies keeping more of their profits--and making unemployed people less expensive to hire by slashing income taxes?
Is a plan that's primary purpose isn't really to get unemployed a job again.
He's hoping that one (or more of the following) will happen, so that he can win in 2012 without having to free up the economy:
1) Unemployment budges enough in the middle of 2012 to convince voters that unemployment is actually going down.
2) Voters will believe in middle to late 2012 that three years of 9% unemployment is all due to factors beyond his control (Bush, jobs going overseas, Republicans on the House, etc...) and will vote for him again.
3) The Republicans will nominate someone so intolerable that voters will stick with the devil they know. Prove me wrong Repubs!
If the trolls make it so annoying to post here that lots of people stop, the trolls will have destroyed their own skulking grounds. Do you think they're intelligent enough to realize that?
This reminds me why I know I need to retire soon - I am soooooo tired of 'splainin' basic, fucking Bidness 101 Econ to our people.
"We can make everything here." "No we can't - we don't have infinite money to invest. We have to make decisions." "But, but, DEY TUK RR JERRRBS!" "No, see how your JEERRRBS are still here? That's cause we bring work here that we can do efficiently. But since you make FUCKING $60/hr FRINGED, YOU NEED TO BE MEGA PRODUCTIVE. SINCE YOU'RE NOT MEGA-PRODUCTIVE OF YOUR OWN VOLITION, YOU GET TO RUN A MACHINE THAT IS MEGA-PRODUCTIVE. ANY MORE QUESTIONS?"
Then have then same conversation about inefficient work rules, the fact that the "takeaways" recent years aren't coming back, cause now we're just barely competitive, finally....it gets to be grinding.
Fuck. We try like hell to give people information so they understand reality. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it understand Biz Econ.
Also, fuck Obama and Biden and Mitch McConnell and Boner and the D's and R's and my state governor and legislature, and the township board, and the county assholes, and the EEOC, OSHA, MIOSHA, DCR, etc. etc. and any other government fuck I've missed who conspires to make my life less free and more aggravating.
I see that the Senate Democratic leadership got nearly all the Democrats to vote in favor of the ethanol tax break (while Republicans voted by a vast majority to eliminate it) because they were upset that Sen. Coburn was able to use procedural tactics to force a vote on it. Scheduling votes should be left up to the leadership, of course. Have to be part of the Team.
Of course, all those corporations are creating millions upon millions of jobs in China. Why do you suppose that is?
Because rational planning under a regime of authoritarian state capitalism works, and the people who know this best? Capitalists.
Speaking of which, today China opened a high-speed rail line that goes from Beijing to Shanghai in 4 hours! That's like going from DC to Miami. The ticket cost? $63. The same as COACH on Amtrak that takes a DAY to get to Florida.
Do either of you care to comment on my points, or try to explain how the chaos of the unplanned market is superior to rational authoritarian capitalist planning done in places like China and Singapore which leads to booming growth, world-class infrastructure, and ending petty political gridlock and debate? There's no debate in China. They get things done. Meanwhile, we're STILL trying to build high speed rail lines and update our collapsing airports and bridges because of petty factional politics that go against the national good.

"Of course, all those corporations are creating millions upon millions of jobs in China. Why do you suppose that is?"
Because you're too stupid to assemble wicker furniture?
"Of course, all those corporations are creating millions upon millions of jobs in China. Why do you suppose that is?"
Because they have a comparative advantage in simple consumer goods? I mean, seriously, do you know how low the DMVP is for making textiles? There's a reason we have China do it, and it's the same reason the scientist hires an assistant to clean his laboratory rather than do it himself; our capital and labor force is so much more productive that we have a comparative advantage in very complex goods like computer software and airplanes so we make those rather than waste it on building McDonald's happy meal toys.
This isn't rocket science, pal. The law of comparative advantage is accepted by literally every school of economic thought outside of Marxists. Even Paul Krugman understands this concept.
"Because rational planning under a regime of authoritarian state capitalism works, and the people who know this best? Capitalists."
That's why the highest standard of living in China is found in the Special Economic Zones, areas of sparse taxation and regulation. It's all due to central planning.
"Speaking of which, today China opened a high-speed rail line that goes from Beijing to Shanghai in 4 hours! That's like going from DC to Miami. The ticket cost? $63. The same as COACH on Amtrak that takes a DAY to get to Florida."
It's good to know that in addition to China fueling possibly the largest housing bubble in modern history through its incredibly lax credit policy that it is also squandering resources that could be used to feed starving people in Tibet on building bullet trains.
Comparative Advantage doesn't work in a world where capital is this mobile.
Even if capital was perfectly nonspecific and could be moved at no opportunity cost (i.e. in fantasy land), people would still be able to specialize in certain lines of production, so comparative advantage would still exist.
The only world in which the law of comparative advantage does not apply is one where everyone has exactly the same preferences, exactly the same skills, exactly the same marginal utility from goods and services, and exactly the same resources.
So I'm guessing Detroit should start building hot houses to grow tropical fruit because South American countries don't have a comparative advantage in that?
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 11:28PM|#
"Considering the carbon footprint of importing foreign food..."
OK, shithead, please tell us the "carbon footprint" of importing food, compared to the "carbon footprint" of producing it locally.
Or, you could simply admit you're an ignoramus.
Don't you know that buying locally is always better? That way the money stays in your community.
Because as we all know, people don't trade goods for goods with money as an intermediary, they trade goods for money and that's it. Money is the key to everything. We all need to segregate ourselves in completely isolated communities of no more than three or four people to keep the maximum amount of money flowing between ourselves. Only then will we defeat Red China.
Other countries like Germany manage to produce their own shoes and belts, I think we could do the same.
Fucking brilliant. So our pieces of paper with dead presidents stay in our town and all the goods and services that that can be produced elsewhere stay elsewhere...or as the law of comparative advantage shows they will not be produced at all and we end up all being poorer with a smaller pie of wealth.
I think two things here have been shown here:
First you are a member of a cargo cult...confusing the utility of money (or capital) with some magical powers that somehow by staying at one place can generate goods and services spontaneously out of thin air,
and Second you answered Tncm's question....no you do not know what comparative advantage is.

Now, we got an E-mail from David Scott of (www.Freethegods.blogspot.com), and it read David Scott has left a new comment on your post "GOMENESAI TOUR II": So what's the big scoop on the current situation with the Korean Conflict? Well Dave should have know better we did a dump job on the poor guy, for which we should say were sorry, but we sort of got a kick out of it. So what is the big scoop about the on going Korean Conflict, it's all political theater, the Israeli-American Empire, simply know around the world as the [EMPIRE], is in an increasingly rapid state of decline, and to stay in the game at all need to maintain it's [2] Two Footholds, the European Foothold in Germany, along the Russian Federations Sphere of Influence, and in the Far East in Japan the now Cuba of the Far East, neither Cuba nor Japan want [Empire] Foothold Troops of Occupation on their soil. The [EMPIRE] is aware that the day they lose one of the [2] Two Footholds they lose both of them, and they are losing rapidly their Foothold Hold in Japan, and the [SOSE] Secretary of State of the Empire, Hillary Diane Rodham- Clinton is doing a great job of almost single handily prying that Foothold out of Japan, With her My Way Or The Highway Non-Diplomatic State Department, yes Hillary got her signed agreement, but its something like the time [FDR] Franklin D. Roosevelt had it out with the Supreme Court, they handled down a ruling against [FDR] and the old boy just looked at them and said now enforce it! Now, we will quote ourselves from a previous posting, The Ire of the Japanese people was finally brought to the point where there can no longer be any middle ground, as the [SOSE] Secretary of State to the Empire Hillary Diane Rodham-Clinton, in her usual My Way or the Highway performance, ignored, downplayed and brushed aside the overwhelming Japanese peoples demands that the [EMPIRE'S] troops of Foothold Far East be removed from the soil of Japan, that the occupation of Japan be ended. But, The Clinton State Department forced the signing of the so called [2006] Japan-U.S. Roadmap for Realignment Implementation, and more than just kicking the can down the road, has lit the fuse to the powder keg of Japanese private citizens and Ire over the continued occupation of their country, unquote.
[THE LATEST MOVE'S]
The [EMPIRE] media is covering the Far East mostly do to the fact it's so bad, Hillary doesn't want it covered but here's how its shaking out;
* The latest Japanese Government which is Parliamentary is coming apart which will mean a new election in September and the [EMPIRE] and Hillary in particular has caused a bigger headache then they now have, they didn't like the present government of Japan, we tend the believe that they are going to really hate the next one, and that election is in [120] days.
* And the [EMIC] Empire Military Industrial Complex is sticking it to the [PRC] Peoples Republic of China Sphere of Influence for not backing them on Sanctions against the [PRK] Peoples Republic of China in the [UN] United Nations, Ya! Like that was really going to happen, but the [EMPIRE] arm twisted the present government of Japan into letting [EMPIRE] military assets in particular [59] Fifty-Nine [Empire] carrier Fighter Aircraft, which the Nationalist Chinese Island of Taipei says its not going to accept or put up with as the Japanese are extending its [ADIZ] Air Defense Identification Zone, a line that a military aircraft must first provide flight details to the national airspace into which it is entering or will meet with prompt interception by military means, in other words they could use what ever means to take it down. Now, for those of you who can't quite grasp the concept, Israeli-American Empire fighter aircraft become legal targets of the Nationalist Chinese, but that also means the Red Chinese, mainland government has that right, as they consider the Nationalist Chinese Island as their territory, including its airspace.
[GUAM]
Now, most [Jar Heads] Marines like Gibbs from [NCIS] Naval Criminal Investigative Service came from one of those town that standing under the one traffic light in town, that had a constant speed trap and if you drove one kilometer over or under the speed limit you when in front of the local barber shop judge who gave you a stiff fine, and from that point beneath the traffic signal one could see the town limits in both directions, and that is why they joined the Marines to get away from it. Well, Guam is that one traffic light town but the only difference the edge of town drops off for leagues into the Pacific Ocean with a lot of big sharks, and for a female its like Jimmy Buffets song Sharks to the left, Sharks to the right and you're the only meal in town. A family sent to Guam either comes back with more in the family, or no longer a family due to D-I-V-O-R-C-E. The advantage to the one traffic light town there is a way out, and if you run out of something you can simple drive down the road and get it, it don't work that way in Guam, you run out, guess what you have to wait until a supply ship or cargo plane fly's more in. So what does this have to do with anything Guam Senator Judith P. Guthertz, who is the chair of the Committee on Military Buildup and Homeland Security in the Senate, got [8K]Eight Thousand Marines relocated from Japan to Guam, you got it [8K] more Marines in a one traffic light community, at taxpayer expense with [EVERYTHING] having to be provided from large distances at cost, big costs
[PILE NOT SCOOP]
So, my only reply to David Scott of (www.Freethegods.blogspot.com), this whole thing is not a scoop of horse manure, it's a massive pile of horse, manure. The short term gains in no way out weight the long term losses created by the hurry up and get it done My Way Or The Highway Clinton mantra, see we have an agreement, now lets see how much of it is implemented.
"In February, Obama chartered the Jobs and Competitiveness Council with a mission of leaving "no stone unturned" in the search of ways to boost the country's anemic job growth."

This is truly a monumental day. Not only do MNG and I agree on something (the political weakness of any politician in regards to the economy), but the economics profession, at least on a superficial level, is getting its bearings again.
This is truly a monumental day. Not only do MNG and I agree on something (the political weakness of any politician in regards to the economy), but the economics profession, at least on a superficial level, is getting its bearings again.
Here is what I think is interesting about this. Let's say these economists are correct (seems plausible). I think it is politically unfeasible. When times are tough people want the government to "do something," any government that is seen as not "doing something" is going to be seen as uncaring and not helping. An administration can't sit around and tell people things will just get better because when things are bad people have very low confidence in the economy, and telling them to just have faith it will get better "on its own" is not going to get bought.
And that dynamic can be very, very bad for everyone involved...
"The Fed shouldn't bother trying to stimulate the economy - and could actually do damage if it did, according to a new survey by the Associated Press."
I think MNG just discovered Austrian economics for the first time.
He's headed in the right direction...
Be nice!
Check it out, MNG...
"The theory views business cycles (or, as some Austrians prefer, "credit cycles") as the inevitable consequence of excessive growth in bank credit, exacerbated by inherently damaging and ineffective central bank policies, which cause interest rates to remain too low for too long, resulting in excessive credit creation, speculative economic bubbles and lowered savings."
MNG knows about Austrian economics, and he's readily dismissed it having read none of the major works (any works?) from the school and by straw manning it to death ("It rejects all empirical analysis!").
Oh please. You read a Wikipedia page on the school and didn't go any further then that. But on retrospect, you are a political science major so we can't exactly expect much heavy lifting from you, can we?
On second thought, have you read an economic treatise by anybody, period? I'm not talking leviathan books like Man, Economy, and State, here. It could be Das Kapital for all I care. I just want to know that you've made a concerted effort to research economics before dismissing an entire school which counts among its members several Nobel Prize winners, accredited professors and graduates from top universities, and has contributed, among many things, marginal analysis. Since you probably have no idea what marginal analysis is or the history of economic thought, it goes without saying that had Carl Menger not written extensively of it in Principles of Economics then we wouldn't have modern economics at all.
When times are tough people want the government to "do something," any government that is seen as not "doing something" is going to be seen as uncaring and not helping.
Now do you understand why Republicans pre-bush (some Democrats even did this) would only put out half measures when they enacted stimulus?
Now do you understand why Republicans push for Tax breaks rather then spending? They don't even have to be supplysiders they simply know that the problem will fix itself and cutting taxes causes less damage then massive spending.
while your claim makes sense, that really seems to be an explanation that attributes far too much intelligence and comprehension to most republicans.
it seems like the tax cuts and half measures are a fortunate coincidence, not a deliberate understanding of the situation. maybe a few politicians see it that way, but so many of those chumps are just smart enough to tie their shoes.

Clearly you just read my first sentence and failed to the second one, and I doubt you read the study I linked to.
I don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
Tough titties. It's now mandatory for every citizen to consult a weatherman on a daily basis. TWICE on sunny days.
(fer teh weatherman jobz)
Yes!!!
So job creation includes putting bureaucrats out of work??? I refuse to believe the good people at the Obama Administration will allow that to happen.
This just in, robots are the illegal immigrants of the left.
It's the same old pre-Carter Administration stuff!
His understanding of how the economy works is no better than what you'd hear at your local union hall meeting.
Productivity gains and efficiency improvements--these are the causes of unemployment?
That's so 1975.
He has no idea what he's doing. The emperor has no clothes!
That's cause NAFTA done drove all the clothes-makin' jobs to the MESSICANS! My Union Boss told me so!
EEYY TUKKK RRRRR JERRRRBSSZ!
AUTOMATION - BAD
TRADE PROTECTIONISM - GOOD
Computers will ruin our economy!
You ever notice how farm laborers don't thresh the wheat with clubs anymore? FUCKING MACHINES DOIN' IT ALL! DEY TUK UR JERBS!
They should all be growing their own food anyway.
Not so fast.
Also, where the fuck is Old Mexican lately? We need some...well, I need some of his maturity.
OLD MEXICAN!!! PLEASE COME OUT AND PLAYYYYY!!!
I wonder if he's been detained by Wise Latina Woman? or something?
OLD MEXICAN!! WHERE ARE YOU??
Saw him at mises.org when someone here linked me there, FWIW.
Yeah I'm thinking of moving there myself. Tired of these dumbass trolls.
If the trolls make it so annoying to post here that lots of people stop, the trolls will have destroyed their own skulking grounds. Do you think they're intelligent enough to realize that?
I don't.
Is that a rhetorical question?
I kind of went all HERCULE TRIATHLON SAIVINEN there. Sorry about that. Carry on.
I'm sorry, but you did not just go all HERCULE TRIATHLON SAVINIEN. Your rant was sadly deficient in [ ].
Please don't say his name three times.
Doesn't that make him go away, like Beetlejuice?
I was thinking it made him show up like Candyman
Thank heavens for the WEC. WRECKAGE, BITCHES!
In Soviet Russia, jobs kill you.
OH NOES THE SLOPES ARE OVERTAKING US!!! RUN!!!
How many times did you orgasm between starting and finishing that post?
Go away Friedman
Do either of you care to comment on my points, or try to explain how the chaos of the unplanned market is superior to rational authoritarian capitalist planning done in places like China and Singapore which leads to booming growth, world-class infrastructure, and ending petty political gridlock and debate? There's no debate in China. They get things done. Meanwhile, we're STILL trying to build high speed rail lines and update our collapsing airports and bridges because of petty factional politics that go against the national good.

"Do either of you care to comment on my points,..."
Yes. You're full of shit.
the national good
No such animal.
And that's why this country is going down the shitter.
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 11:30PM|#
"And that's why this country is going down the shitter."
Nope.
You're down the shitter, since stupid can't be fixed. And you *are* stupid.
High Speed Rail!!! OMG!!!!!!!!
Actually, fuck it, if you want more explanation of The Truth's ideas here, read Mein Kampf. It's just the libertarians who are keeping us down, with their unpatriotic dissent and their obstructionist thinking!!
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 9:55PM|#
You're wasting you time.
How about Da Troof just make a pencil?
He would just tell us that if America was an authoritarian state capitalist nation then we'd be able to make pencils entirely ourselves.
Just about every commodity and service on the planet is mobile with the exception of land.
In what shit brain universe do you live where capital being mobile would make one lick of difference?
Comparative Advantage doesn't work in a world where capital is this mobile.
So I'm guessing Detroit should start building hot houses to grow tropical fruit because South American countries don't have a comparative advantage in that?
Considering the carbon footprint of importing foreign food in the middle of the winter, maybe so.
Do you even know what the law of comparative advantage is?
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 11:28PM|#
"Considering the carbon footprint of importing foreign food..."
OK, shithead, please tell us the "carbon footprint" of importing food, compared to the "carbon footprint" of producing it locally.
Or, you could simply admit you're an ignoramus.
Don't you know that buying locally is always better? That way the money stays in your community.
Other countries like Germany manage to produce their own shoes and belts, I think we could do the same.
Good for Germany.
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 11:29PM|#
"Other countries like Germany manage to produce their own shoes and belts, I think we could do the same."
Ding-dong!
Uh, Germany can't feed all the Germans, shithead.
That way the money stays in your community.
The Truth|6.14.11 @ 11:01PM|#
"Comparative Advantage doesn't work in a world where capital is this mobile."
There is stupid.
Then there is *stupid*, and then *STUPID*, but I'm not sure how many levels above *STUPID* this is.
My calculator doesn't register that number of digits.
Sure it does, as long as mobility doesn't make up for the difference in relative production costs.
Labor is capital. Capital is mobile.
Therefore, all the unemployed Americans can move to China tomorrow and the problem is solved.
Jesus, why don't you quit pussyfooting around and just marry China already?
who in China can afford a $63 ticket - it certainly ain't the peasants.
"The ticket cost? $63."
This in a nation where construction workers make $122.00/year.
http://www.worldsalaries.org/china.shtml
Yep, real hot stuff, shithead.
He should have created a blue-ribbon commission instead. You can't do any better than that.
I prefer the Pabst Blue Ribbon commission *hic*
[WHAT'S THE SCOOP?]
The [EMPIRE] media is covering the Far East mostly do to the fact it's so bad, Hillary doesn't want it covered but here's how its shaking out;
* The latest Japanese Government which is Parliamentary is coming apart which will mean a new election in September and the [EMPIRE] and Hillary in particular has caused a bigger headache then they now have, they didn't like the present government of Japan, we tend the believe that they are going to really hate the next one, and that election is in [120] days.
HERCULE TRIATHLON SAVINIEN
Guys I just figured out that HERC makes alot more sense if you read his posts in the Pee-wee Herman voice.
I said NOT to say his name three times.
Are the Jews to blame for NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service? How about CSI: Miami?
yes.
Nick: You absolutely must let Herc pinch hit for you on Redeye or The Alyona Show.
"In February, Obama chartered the Jobs and Competitiveness Council with a mission of leaving "no stone unturned" in the search of ways to boost the country's anemic job growth."
Just force everybody to buy something. Also, go out and wreck some stuff.
Also, legalize it.
This is truly a monumental day. Not only do MNG and I agree on something (the political weakness of any politician in regards to the economy), but the economics profession, at least on a superficial level, is getting its bearings again.
Weird. Not was there a double-post, but it wasn't even to the person I was replying to (MNG).
"Not only". This site really needs an edit function.
This is truly a monumental day. Not only do MNG and I agree on something (the political weakness of any politician in regards to the economy), but the economics profession, at least on a superficial level, is getting its bearings again.
Anyone see this?
Economist argue Fed should leave the economy alone to aid recovery
Economists have a message for the Federal Reserve: Leave it alone.
The Fed shouldn't bother trying to stimulate the economy - and could actually do damage if it did, according to a new survey by the Associated Press.
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_....._pros.html
No! Really?!
If only someone, somewhere had predicted that in 2008.
If only someone on this continent had predicted it in 1776.
I think MNG just discovered Austrian economics for the first time.
He's headed in the right direction...
Be nice!
Check it out, MNG...
"The theory views business cycles (or, as some Austrians prefer, "credit cycles") as the inevitable consequence of excessive growth in bank credit, exacerbated by inherently damaging and ineffective central bank policies, which cause interest rates to remain too low for too long, resulting in excessive credit creation, speculative economic bubbles and lowered savings."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.....cle_Theory
Doesn't that sound familiar? ...I think something like that might have happened when I was a kid or something...
Or maybe that's what happened three years ago!
MNG knows about Austrian economics, and he's readily dismissed it having read none of the major works (any works?) from the school and by straw manning it to death ("It rejects all empirical analysis!").
Yeah, long familiar with Austrian economics, long unimpressed.
I think MNG just discovered Austrian economics for the first time.
He's headed in the right direction...
Be nice!
I am actually somewhat impressed...the experts said something is true and MNG true to his word decided to follow what the experts said.
it's the credentials.
Treat it like sore dick - don't fuck with it.
Does that clear up for you why Kennedy cut taxes?
joshua,
while your claim makes sense, that really seems to be an explanation that attributes far too much intelligence and comprehension to most republicans.
it seems like the tax cuts and half measures are a fortunate coincidence, not a deliberate understanding of the situation. maybe a few politicians see it that way, but so many of those chumps are just smart enough to tie their shoes.
The whole notion of a government appointed "jobs council" is absurd to begin with.
Government's do not "create" jobs - or anything else.
Government never does anything other than redistribute wealth that has already been created by somebody else.
