O Magazine on the Life-Changing Potential of MDMA
Last night I attended a Dallas fundraiser for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), where MAPS President Rick Doblin was very excited about a feature story in the March issue of O magazine. It is not hard to see why. O Senior Editor Sarah Winter offers a balanced yet highly sympathetic account of research on the psychotherapeutic potential of MDMA, focusing on Charleston, South Carolina, psychiatrist Michael Mithoefer's MAPS-funded work with people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Winter acknowledges the controversy surrounding MDMA (a.k.a. Ecstasy), carefully distinguishing between the drug's real and apocryphal hazards, and notes the limited nature of existing evidence in favor of its effectiveness in therapy. But the general thrust of the piece, which features compelling portraits of people who have benefited from MDMA and closes with a description of Winter's own MDMA-enhanced therapy session, is to encourage an open-minded look at a taboo substance. The article is well worth reading in its entirety as a model for journalism that implicitly questions current policy without setting off anti-drug alarm bells.

Last night I attended a Dallas fundraiser... Are you sure you were there?
Time to get my O face on...
without setting off anti-drug alarm bells
You fucking libertines just want to get high. Freedom my ass! I needed a triple Scotch after reading that crap.
HERPITY DERPITY?
Good call, nobody ever drank Scotch to get high.
"You fucking libertines just want to get high"
Yeah, and? We also want to fuck your women, men, and farm animals.
"How much for the little girl?"
I think y'all got took.
It's an excellent article. I know someone who could greatly benefit from this, but because it's illegal I'm having a hard time finding a therapist who uses it, even though I know there are some in my area. Gee, thanks for "protecting us," Uncle Sam!
It has not yet been found safe and effective by the FDA, so it cannot be used safely.
Hahaha, good one.
Let's ask the good doctor, Sasha Shulgin. According to him, he developed MDMA, and many other analogs to be used as tools specifically for the mental health profession. Of course, when he worked for Dow, he unknowingly developed them for the CIA, for use as a truth serums.
Interesting article. Thanks for the link, reason.
I think the author's name is Jessica Winter, though. I would be curious to read more of her thoughts on the experience as time goes by.
