BATF Agent Says Guns Deliberately Allowed by BATF to Cross Border Used to Kill Border Patrol Agent
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agent John Dodson insists the BATF was deliberately trying to create a "U.S. guns crossing the border into Mexico" crisis through inaction:
An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms senior agent assigned to the Phoenix office in 2010, Dodson's job is to stop gun trafficking across the border. Instead, he says he was ordered to sit by and watch it happen.
Investigators call the tactic letting guns "walk." In this case, walking into the hands of criminals who would use them in Mexico and the United States.
"I'm boots on the ground in Phoenix, telling you we've been doing it every day since I've been here," he said. "Here I am. Tell me I didn't do the things that I did. Tell me you didn't order me to do the things I did. Tell me it didn't happen. Now you have a name on it. You have a face to put with it. Here I am. Someone now, tell me it didn't happen."
Agent Dodson and other sources say the gun walking strategy was approved all the way up to the Justice Department. The idea was to see where the guns ended up, build a big case and take down a cartel. And it was all kept secret from Mexico.
ATF named the case "Fast and Furious."
While it doesn't seem as if the agency has learned any Spider-Man-like lessons from it, their inaction indirectly seems to have contributed to a border patrol death:
There was so much opposition to the gun walking, that an ATF supervisor issued an e-mail noting a "schism" among the agents. "Whether you care or not people of rank and authority at HQ are paying close attention to this case…we are doing what they envisioned…. If you don't think this is fun you're in the wrong line of work… Maybe the Maricopa County jail is hiring detention officers and you can get $30,000 … to serve lunch to inmates…"
"We just knew it wasn't going to end well. There's just no way it could," Dodson said.
On Dec. 14, 2010, Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was gunned down. Dodson got the bad news from a colleague.
According to Dodson, "They said, 'Did you hear about the border patrol agent?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And they said 'Well it was one of the Fast and Furious guns.'
Presented as an interesting case study in the way law enforcement actually thinks--not to say that it is an essential task of U.S. law enforcement to "keep guns out of Mexico." Our real culpability in Mexican gun violence lies, of course, in our drug prohibition, as see Jacob Sullum from earlier today.

This illustrates why the slogan "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms -- Should be the name of a convenience store, not a government agency" is so poignantly true.
This operation was too fast, too furious.
Talkin about gats, traps, cops and robbers
It's 9-1-1, PLEASE CALL THE DOCTOR
Evacuate the building and trick the pigs
Since everybody wanna piece, we gon split ya wigs
See some fools slipped up and over-stepped they boundaries

They'll only get one finger while I'm shifting gears
The idea was to see where the guns ended up, build a big case and take down a cartel.
Because there aren't already enough crimes to charge the cartels with? Hey, let's get the IRS involved too, they can get the cartels on tax evasion. That'll show em!
That's how they got Al Capone...
Don't forget that the phrase "jackbooted thugs" was coined for ATF agents.
What makes this even sweeter is that the persons "walking the guns" across the border were paid "confidential informants" of the ATFE.
What part of this makes any sort of sense: the Government agency tasked with enforcing firearms laws pays an informant to purchase "Evil Black Rifles (EBR)" (semi-auto only, therefore legal to own) illegally and then transport them across a national border in violation of Mexican and US laws so the EBR's can be used by criminals in furtherance of a Criminal Enterprise; with one being used to shoot a US Law Enforcement Officer dead?
According to the above logic (I know, I have an FFL); I should not sell the ATFE any guns because they may be used to commit crimes, crimes of an international nature.
We are witnessing the definition of insanity and paying for it in the blood of our Citizens. I fear the Government, not my fellow Armed Citizens.
Who wants to bet me that this doesn't get any coverage beyond this and maybe a few other righty-oriented websites?
"righty oriented"?
I doubt this will get any sympathetic coverage anywhere aside from here.
"righty oriented" sites will probably write off the whistleblower as some pinko, 'blame-america-firster' ...
I envision the attitude being something like this =
Pogue Colonel: What is that you've got written on your helmet?
Private Joker: "Born to Kill", sir.
Pogue Colonel: You write "Born to Kill" on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Private Joker: No, sir.
Pogue Colonel: You'd better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant shit on you.
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Now answer my question or you'll be standing tall before the man.
Private Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Pogue Colonel: The what?
Private Joker: The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Whose side are you on, son?
Private Joker: Our side, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Don't you love your country?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Then how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?
Private Joker: Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel: Son, all I've ever asked of my marines is that they obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese, because inside every gook there is an American trying to get out. It's a hardball world, son. We've gotta keep our heads until this peace craze blows over.
Anyone who is a student of history knows that this kind of shit is actually a mathematical constant in the function of government. For every X# of people in government, there are X*(1-N^y) acts of egregious stupidity that undermine the ostensible purpose of all the other members of government trying to actually produce some functional value to society. (where N is the rate of funding growth to the Y power of the current interest rate)
Nice algorithm, GILMORE. I bet with all of the engineers / programmers / mathematicians on H&R, we could come up with a few more a write a good book on Government Math.
For example - Cost of Government Building Project A: X*Y^k (where X = estimated cost, Y = number of congress critters who originally voted for the bill and k = the number of contractors who gave money to their campaigns)
You know something funny... i just plugged that idea into excel and inserted historical interest rate & spending growth numbers from 1960-2010...
[actually the formula was wrong...sorta... not =X(1-(N^y)), just =X(N^Y)]
But.... it actually works. Sorta. Not kidding. According to that calculus, the "least dumb" moment in recent history was 1979 (Reagan??); most "screamingly dumb"? 2009.
Unfortunately, according to this relationship, the rate of stupid in government has never been below ~65%, and averages 80-90% for most of the second half of the 20th century.
Sounds about right, actually :/
I (heart) spreadsheets.
http://waronguns.blogspot.com/ and others have done a lot of reporting on it. CBS has done a story. Limbaugh is supposed to do a segment on the issue.
How much?
I thought it was capitalists that would make and sell the rope with which they would be hung.
'bout time y'all got around to covering this story. The "right wing anti-government" sites have been on this story for over a month.
puts paid the lie that the cartels dont buy guns in the US.
gun ownrs have blod on there hands but the dont care cuz it is mesicins dieing and nmot them gun shuld be outlawwd
hey not me - what do gun owners have to do w cartel gun purchases?
I doubt there was ever a lot of doubt about that when it comes to handguns. They aren't up here buying full autos though.
there was a canard on this & other rightwing sites that the cartels did NOT purchase guns in the US.
Does buying them from an ATF front really mean they are making major purchases on the open US market? This is just as bad as the FBI targeting those semi retards for their "blow up the infidel" stings.
Didn't you get the memo? You can now buy Ma Deuces and Milkor MGLs at your local gun shop. I've got 2 of each.
another deflection. sorry ur cartel gun lies are exposed but u shoulda known better than buy NRA agiprop.
Hello, piss facktery! You are truly an embarrassment! Keep up the good work!
Now that Katie Couric's on it, there'll be hell to pay.
Unless a Tea Partier in Wisconsin sneezes on a unionista. Then it'll get pushed to the back burner.
Clearly, my new policies have made the border more secure than ever and strengthened our relationship with our neighbor to the south. I am made up of sterner stuff than George W Bush.
You know who else tried to stir up problems in a neighboring country so they could tighten the grip on their own?
ooo ooo - charlie sheen?
Governor Walker!
Sooo, if the BATF aren't involving the Mexican cops in this sting what's the point?
Do they think that at the end they'll just turn over the case documentation and the Mexicans will just jump right into prosecuting the cartel just in their sayso?
Or will these cases go nowhere and do nothing outside of pissing off the Mexican government?
What Mexican cops?
Huh, a U.S. agency selling weapons to a de facto enemy of the U.S., which end up being used to kill U.S. officials. Some might call that treason, but what do I know?
Don't know if it had anything to do with this, but there was a big ATF bust last night in Long Beach. Lots of dudes with vests and big-assed guns arresting people in a van.
Spooky shit.
Maybe they were taking pictures of a tourist attraction like the Queen Mary or something.
Or does that only happen on the east coast's team blue paradise?
This shit was happening all over the place after 9/11. People were being stopped at tourist attractions in Seattle because they were photographing shit. This country's going in-fucking-sane.
"Know when we'll disarm? When those radical right wingers disarm." The policeman's remarks reminded me of that line from The President's Analyst.
This pattern is really getting me down. Every place you read about such shit, somebody has another story. In one of the blog comment threads on the above story, someone said if you think that's something, get a load of this, and posted a link to a YouTube. I'm too worn out to click on it.
ATF named the case "Fast and Furious."
If they were gonna go with a movie title, they shoulda named it "Stir Crazy."
We tried to sell the cartels high speed rail, but even they knew that was utter bullshit.
then they must be trippin on aQ drugs like sheen
I figure the ATF was actually buying the guns and running them as a black flag operation to get tighter Gun Control laws.
Yeah, but those guns probably walked from gun show sales!
