Gov. Chris Christie Sabotaging New Jersey's Medical Marijuana Law
Lisa Segal wakes up every morning locked in a fetal position, her muscles in spasm from multiple sclerosis.
She's 59 years old, and has tried everything. The only medicine that relaxes those muscles and settles her nausea is marijuana.
So when her supply runs out, she drives an hour from her Gloucester County home to Philadelphia, and walks the streets to buy pot, leaning on her cane. It scares her to death, but it's better than spending her remaining years curled up in bed, in pain…
The medical marijuana movement aims to end this official cruelty, and allow people like Segal to live in dignity. That was the idea, anyway, when the Legislature passed the law last year. It was supposed to be up and running by now.
But thanks to Gov. Chris Christie, this effort has gone terribly off track. So Segal still has to sneak to Philly for her fix, like a criminal.
"The way the rules are written now, I'll have no choice but to continue doing what I'm doing," she says.
The rules drafted by the Christie administration amount to bureaucratic sabotage. And the political and legal fights they have sparked mean the delay is certain to continue for months.
One rule places a limit on potency, so the legal pot can't be as strong as the varieties Segal can find on the street. Home delivery was allowed at first, and then banned, for reasons the Department of Health will not explain.
If a doctor wants to prescribe pot, he needs to warn patients every three months that some experts believe this treatment is ineffective, and that marijuana can be addictive.
Each distribution center can carry only three strains of pot, and hold no excess inventory. They can't make pot cookies or brownies, even for patients with cancer or AIDS who have lung problems.
You get the idea. Sure, the law is on the books. But it was signed by former Gov. Jon Corzine, and Christie never liked it. So he is trying to strangle this baby in its crib by drafting one unworkable rule after another. Call it bureaucratic sabotage.
Lisa Segal would make for a pretty compelling Gary Johnson 2012 primary campaign commercial, don't you think?

Godammitsomuch. Just when you start to like the guy.
Exactly. It's crap like this that just ruins a good candidate so eaily for me.
He's been so good about standing up to Unions and other statist assholes and yet here he comes along and takes a fat dump on personal liberty.
godamitsomuch indeed.
why do so many fiscal libertarians like Christie have to be dicks about civil liberties?
baffling, this disconnect.
They aren't civil liberties, they are our common law rights. Unalienable.
It's because fiscal discipline is a virtue, and the virtuous tend to come to the same conclusions about the same behaviors.
The hard part is figuring out that just because something is wrong doesn't mean that it should be illegal.
Sorry - I just don't think people with MS, AIDs, Cancer, chronic back pain, and so on lookingfor relief from their suffering is wrong.
No matter how I look at it, being against medicinal marijuana is the wrong moral side of the issue. Just my two cents.
"I just don't think people looking for pot is wrong. "
FYP. The reason doesn't matter.
I think you're missing one of the finer points: at its core, being virtuous is all about self-denial. In that sense, pain is an expected side effect, and unimportant to the argument.
Oh, and because it's a pet peeve of mine:
Medical Marijuana is just a red herring. It doesn't address the major problem, which is the violence and instability that follows its (illegal) supply chain. Making it completely legal fixes that problem quicker than you can say "Philip Morris".
Keep waiting for your perfect candidate. Soon, very soon...
You mean one who actually has some small respect for liberty and the notion of self ownership? You mean a candidate who actually has principles and abides by them? You mean one who thinks the state has no business telling us how to live our personal lives? Is that what you mean?
You mean a candidate who actually has principles and abides by them?
Yup. That's what I mean. He'll be along any minute now. Just have faith.
Keep voting for the same "best of the worst" candidate and getting nothing in return. I'm sure this time will be different from all the others.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.
I knew that him being a bombastic asshole wasn't all a good thing.
Here we go...
On a totally unrelated matter, expect more attacks now against Rep. Ron Paul, from leftists and pro-Fed "libertarians":
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/73564.html
"When Ron Paul was seen as a 'lone wolf' in the House, the Left generally wrote of him approvingly or, to paraphrase what Daniel Ellsberg (yes, THAT Daniel Ellsberg) said about Rep. Paul when he declared that while he abhors Ron's 'domestic policies,' he supports him on the foreign policy front.
However, now that Rep. Paul is going to be front-and-center in the debate about Federal Reserve policies, look for the Left to accuse him of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, being a 'Neo-Confederate,' and Lord knows what else, and the attacks will be vicious. Ron Paul now is a direct threat to what the Left holds to be most dear: the limitless creation of fiat money. I can assure readers that the Left won't take this 'threat' lightly. Look for The Usual Suspects to ramp up their attacks on Rep. Paul[...]"

Cristie is straining the policy, but he's not outright banning pot again. What's stopping people from making their own pot brownies? Seems to me like Segal just wants that good crip and won't settle for regs.
Don't get caught up in this sensationalized piece; medical marijuana is still legal in New Jersey, which is a great thing.
On another note, couldn't telling her story ("Segal still has to sneak to Philly for her fix, like a criminal") count as probable cause for arresting her? I hope not, but I'm always curious when these stories come up. Unless Lisa Segal is just a fake name.
Oh, I fear for her poor dog.
Eggs, fetal-position locked omelettes, etc.
fetal-position locked omelettes = when you fuckup flipping the omelette
It's Jersey. The little people get fucked. Welcome to Jersey.
You sound like a liberal.
You sound like a moron. Congratulations.
You're more predictable than Warty's colon.
And you continue to be boring. Good fucking work, anonopussy.
So boring you cannot resist me.
Bwahahaha!
New Jersey is a fine state, with good people and honest politicians.
you sound like a moron, get back to work.
You sound like Episiarch's fluffer, get back to your mom's basement.
Passive aggressive troll is passive aggressive. But we all knew you would be.
I want marijuana legalized as much as the next Reasonslut, but let's not pretend that it's a miracle drug. More, its usefulness to society makes for a pretty shitty pro-legalization argument. What happens when we cure these diseases? Or when we find a drastically superior treatment? Should marijuana cease to be legal?
good point, the whole 'miracle drug' angle is just as fallacious as the rhetoric from the 'not even once' and 'above the influence' crowd. I suspect it damages honest legalization efforts as much as helps it. I call it a wash. Honesty is pretty key with pot since most people know what it is and what it typically does. I wish we would just treat adults like adults. Ah, a man can dream.
The argument for legalization because of MJ's reported medical benefits undermines pro-legalization efforts. It's a classic case of compromise. Drug warriors don't buy it. They say, "Use an approved drug for your MS. There are plenty available." When you argue for a right with the wrong ammunition, you're just asking for failure and disappointment.
Re: micsolana,
Many things in this world are bad for you. Let's leave the decision on how to handle them in the hands of the individuals instead of bureaucrats.
"The ultimate result of shielding man from the effects of folly, is to fill the world with fools."
Herbert Spencer.
Wow, what a brilliant line of reasoning.
Well, they banned aspirin once ibuprofen and acetaminophen came, out, right? Oh, what's that, aspirin is still on the market, despite being less effective in most cases AS WELL AS actually killing a number of people every year. Makes perfect sense to me.
No. But it's a step forward towards a realization that individuals should be able to make decisions about their own health.
Besides, MS isn't going to get cured overnight. The best available treatments are toxic and basically sabotage the whole immune system. By the time we can selectively disable or depress parts of the immune response, we'll probably be able to reverse any damage caused by smoking pot in the first place, which changes the whole argument.
I am just one person, but it is a miracle drug for me. I have MS with the horrible muscle spasms. Nothing the doctors gave me would relieve the pain or the reduce the spasms. Pot will do both within minutes of smoking it.
I know some people with MS that are hooked on Vocodin. But since that's legal, it must be better for them than pot because a doctor and a bureaucrat said so.
I am just one person,
Ahh, see, there's your problem. You don't have lobbyists filling the right pockets.
You'll get your freedom when you can afford it, just like in any other third world kleptocracy.
Recreation will never be cured. Hopefully.
Then we celebrate. Would marijuana's ceasing to be legal be too great a price to pay for the conquest of major diseases?
It's like not wanting to make more money because you'd get into a higher income tax bracket.
Would marijuana's ceasing to be legal be too great a price to pay for the conquest of major diseases?
Yes, yes it would, because the legality, or not, of marijuana has absolutely nothing to do with the conquest of major diseases.
You might as well ask "Would shooting every puppy be too great a price, etc."
You might as well ask "Would shooting every puppy be too great a price, etc."
Who would ever ask such a thing?
Well, if you were in excruciating pain and no medication but marijuana worked, wouldn't you consider it a "miracle drug?"
If you were watching you son or daughter fight the miserable side-effects of chemo and finally see them receive some relief via marijuana, wouldn't you consider it a "miracle drug?"
If a doctor wants to prescribe pot, he needs to warn patients every three months that some experts believe this treatment is ineffective, and that marijuana can be addictive.
Must the doctor also tell the patient that some experts think leeches or foot massages will cure their ills?
Besides, the article is dated. Christie and the Legislature have agreed on a compromise set of regulations.
It's dated...yesterday.
Christie knows if he allows legal pot, there might not be enough munchies left for him.
Again, the correct term is "re-legalize". Weed was legal until 1914. It was first banned by racists. But the statists don't like having that brought up.
New Jersey is a fine state, with good people and honest politicians. But you need to go to Philly to get the dankity-dank nuggs.
Bullshit. There are plenty of great places to get KB in Jersey...Newark, Camden, New Brunswick...anywhere there's a Rutgers campus, really. Who but a pothead would those damn RU Hungry sandwiches appeal to?
But it was signed by former Gov. Jon Corzine, and Christie never liked it. So he is trying to strangle this baby in its crib by drafting one unworkable rule after another. Call it bureaucratic sabotage.
Nice work, you fat fuck.
And- what ever happened to the guy who got tossed in the slammer for trying to keep his guns in a safe place?
Christie is supposed to make the decision this week.
I'll bet fatso never misses an opportunity to have his picture taken with a pig.
fucking sizist scum. go take your hatred back to your livejournal and look at some thinspo you maggotfucking douchenozzle! Chris Christie is beautiful just the way he is!
You sound fattening.
It's the same kind of crap that anti-gun bureaucrats pull on their fiefdoms: impose requirements or restrictions that are almost compliance-proof, with the purpose of discouraging [fill in the blank] use.
I say move to California, sure we will resemble a third world economy within months, but the weed is abundant!
I just went to gather my daily samples (waste water sampling at a public discharge point) and found about 2 grams of the sticky-icky left behind after someone hastily made a blunt. Oh well, one mans trash is another mans bong load...
So, the street aren't quite PAVED in (Oaxaca) gold, but it's gettin close.
allow people like Segal to live in dignity.
Ah, yes: the dignity of giggling fits and cheetos cravings.
Pot may be a lot of things, but enhancer of dignity it aint.
I remember walking through an ICU once... barely conscious people hooked up to machines, some mobile, some not. People shitting themselves, wearing diapers. That's all fine and good; but some jerk was there watching TV, happily giggling and eating snack food -- disgusting!
I call BS, there is no place in NJ that you need to drive an hour to get pot. You can get pot without crossing the street. I'm sure some neighbor teen will gladly sell this lady any kind of pot she wants. It's not about access and availability, it's about getting arrested.
Kev, some people (like, say, an elderly lady) are unlikely to be hooked up to the local black market.
I'm guessing that, rather than knock on doors on her block and ask people she will see every day if they would like to supply her drug habit, she went the only place she knew she could get it.
That's what struck me--she'll drive an hour to buy pot in Philly? It's not like she couldn't go to Newark and get something similar. You'd think she'd be all about supporting the local state economy.
Ya, they don't have any blacks were she lives? Walk up to any black guy on the street and ask if he can get some weed and you'll be hooked up in 10 minutes. I'm not even being sarcastic or racist. Every black person I've ever known even if they don't smoke knows were to get some.
Dude!
I have always felt the whole medical pot approach was a bad one. For all I know, pot may have fantastic medical benefits for some people and that would be great, but it's really irrelevant from a libertarian point of view. It is fundamental from a libertarian perspective that we own ourselves and many laws including the drug laws are directly contrary to that view. It is utterly absurd to talk about "liberty and justice for all" and land of the free/home of the brave when, apparently, most of the populace does not even believe you own yourself.
To my mind, begging the state for permission to ingest pot or anything else because it gives you some medical benefit presumes that the state has a legitimate right to determine what we may or may not ingest. In what universe can a people kid themselves that they are in anyway "free" when they allow governmental bureaucrats and their armed minions dictate what compounds they may or may not ingest? Well, I guess this universe. And Chris Christie is a fat piece of shit.
He, did, however, order Brian Aitken released today.
Medical use of marijuana is just a smokescreen for people who want to get high, and those who want to make money off of them. Very few users are actually sick. In Denver, there are dispensaries on every block, and doctors who work for them and deeming sick all who enter.
Chris Chritie is a fat, rude, scumbag, piece of shit that doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself. State paid helicopter rides to your kid's baseball game while I bust my ass at work and miss my son's games because I have to work weekends to put food on the table. Good luck on getting re-elected you mannerless shitbag of a person. You're FAT and your mother dresses you funny!! FUCK YOU FATTY!!
Thanks
