Obama's "Rickety and One-Sided Trade Policy"

Writing at Forbes, New York University law professor Richard Epstein has some sharp words for the president:  

Fresh from his major political defeat in the mid-term elections, President Barack Obama has decided to go on the political offensive by acting presidential, albeit in the worst possible way.  One object lesson was apparent in his Saturday op-ed in The New York Times, "Exporting Our Way to Stability." His cascade of political and economic blunders begins with his first word: "exporting."

According to Obama, a new emphasis on domestic jobs starts with yet another pointless world tour.  Instead of deregulating at home, he will seek to persuade the plenipotentiaries of India, Indonesia and Japan and South Korea to accept our new, muscular trade export policy.

These lefty statist thugs just cannot comprehend anything that doesn't involve ratcheting up the bullying. Epstein nails it. If you want to increase the competitiveness of American exports, lower their cost structure by deregulating (and, theoretically, cutting taxes, but that's probably a non-starter given the deficit).

Instead the Lefty Statist Thug-in-Chief, having run out of Americans to bully, heads overseas to bully foreign countries into sacrificing their exports to the US by accepting the new dollar devaluation policy. Nice.

Once upon a time, American trade policy was well and truly free trade. It definitely never ever rested on force, implied or otherwise, no sir. It definitely never rested on defrauding the world by having the de facto world currency, which in turn was never ever backed by force or its threat. Oh no indeed.
