Remember Courtland Milloy, the WashPo metro columnist who celebrated Mayor Adrian Fenty's education-reform-croaking defeat at the polls this week by going postal on the "myopic little twits" from the scarequoteworthy "creative class" who are ruining the nation's capital with their Tweeting and their Michelle Rhee-loving and their "chic new eateries"? Guess where this intolerant, economically illiterate D.C. nationalist lives?
Go ahead and tell me how terrible it is that an anti-masturbation sub-Palin has an outside chance of being one of the few of the 100 senators who you could pick out in a police lineup. I will counter with a less-sexy story about how, in the city where I choose to live, where I pay hefty local taxes, where I have sincere hopes about placing my daughter in a public school system (as Adrian Fenty and Michelle Rhee do, but Barack Obama does not), where I have witnessed stunning changes for the better in just two years of interacting with the local elementary school, one of the country's foulest and most powerful special interests, the overwhelmingly Democratic Party-financing American Federation of Teachers, just spent $1 million large to make sure that the last glimmer of reform for this famously bottom-of-the-barrel school district gets snuffed out, in a wave of anti-Stuff White People Like spite.
This is your mainstream Democratic Party, people. It knows how to speak in complete sentences, it knows how to masturbate, and it knows how to destroy expensive education systems. I hope you fucking enjoy it.
UPDATE: Adam Serwer, The American Prospect's "triple threat," whose work people keep telling me I should like, reacts to this post with a pungent blast of self-superior incomprehension:
It's kind of funny to watch Tea Party boosters descend into a furious rage over signs of an inverse sense of racial entitlement among some political figures in Washington, D.C. […]
Truly, is there a man life has wronged more deeply than Welch? Last time I checked, Fenty and Rhee were Democrats, and Democratic President Barack Obama's administration had just given them $75 million in federal money to implement their agenda. But whatever, political speech is for independently wealthy types who can fund magazines and think tanks, not for school teachers organizing on behalf of their own interests. I suppose I hope that in addition to being familiar with masturbation, basic grammar and how to destroy education in America, the foul Democratic Party also knows how to use Google.
Milloy's column, with its rage against professional elites disdaining the groundlings, followed the basic right-wing script, except its racial resentment was directed at whites rather than blacks, which is why it made Welch and any number of other D.C.-based white folks on the right so angry.
Yes, Adam, there are people whose lives have been much, much more wronged than my own (which, in the event, I wasn't complaining about). You can see them in the video above. I'm sure your white-boy mirth and appreciation of union rights will come as welcome consolation to the fact that their children are trapped.

Come to Northern Virginia, Matt! We've got great schools, weak unions (coincidence?); liberal gun laws; low crime. Leave the fetid third-world of urban bohemianism!
Sadly, one must go further than the Orange line allows to escape the libtard vortex of DC. In it's defense, NoVA's libtard concentration is less than other DC burbs.
Wow, just wow. No Californian, no matter how apologetic, should be talking about how libtarded any other place is, given the state of this state - SF, LA and Sacra-fucking-mento in particular.
You forgot 5.75% income tax vs 8.5% in DC. Or move to Wyoming (seriously considering):
The state of Wyoming does not levy a personal or corporate income tax. Wyoming does not impose a tax on intangible assets such as bank accounts, stocks, or bonds, either. In addition, Wyoming does not assess any tax on retirement income earned and received from another state. Further, there is no legislative plan to implement any of these types of taxes.
"Great googly-moogly! Where do I sign up?"
STOP, don't. Wyoming is a terrible place. Lowest population in the United States, takes 20 minutes to drive across the biggest city (Cheyenne)even during rush hour and it is only an hour and a half north of Denver. Property taxes are also terrible. I pay 3500 bucks a year for a 600k house that would probably only cost a million and a half in northern VA. Isabel in Wyoming
This is your mainstream Democratic Party, people. It knows how to speak in complete sentences, it knows how to masturbate, and it knows how to destroy expensive education systems. I hope you fucking enjoy it.
Awesome, Matt. But you really could work from anywhere, right? Seriously, why don't you move?
I used to be a boho urban guy too. Couldn't picture piloting a mini-van to Applebees and all that.
But the reality is that I have the advantage of suburbia, and I cycle to the Dupont circle area every day--no problems. I've even jogged into work from my house. A lot of the NoVA towns have city centers that are very walkable for good restaurants, entertainment, pre-schools etc.
And your kid will graduate pre-school eventually, right?
Oh well, good luck and may Gray not be able to stop the gentrification for you and yours.
I grew up in a huge Levittown(sic?)-style suburban grid, and while je ne regrette rien, it's not something I'm eager to go back to. And my wife is an urban critter.
Don't live in Maryland. It's just as soul-ripping as DC political-wise and convenient to nothing in the way of fun or interesting. You have to fucking drive everywhere.
Every time I hear of some new bar or restaurant or something that looks like it could be a nice break from the day-to-day, I play a little game and bet that it's in Virginia. I'm way ahead of the house on that one.
Sometimes I wonder about how people go on about the HORRORS of driving. I've been in NYC a few times when it was butt ass -F and had to walk to a subway station to wait for 10 minutes for a train, and thought "Do people really think this is better?"
As for moving: fuck that. Why don't THEY -- the race-baiting power-grubbers -- move? Why are the people who just want to be left alone the ones who are always told to move if they don't like it, even by their supposed friends?
This strangely reminds me of the white mayor who won on a split ticket on the HBO show The Wire.
I never liked his character. He was whiny, petulant, and a Democrat amongst Democrats. His school system was $15 million- $50 million (doesn't matter, it was a show) in the hole, and he and his administration still found a way to blame republicans in a city (Baltimore) where Democrats outnumber Republicans "nine to one".
Yes, it was a show, but living in an overwhelmingly Democratic district, it swerves shockingly close to the truth.
I don't know if you saw the show, or the episode in particular, but he wanted to go to the Republican governor to get money to bail out the Democratically controlled schools. When the Republican governor wanted to announce a press conference surrounding the bailout (which he should, and I would have done the same), the Ballmer mayor balked. Awesome show.
I love all of those characters, especially Bubs, but if you didn't watch the show and only heard their story from someone else you might not feel that way (except for Beadie - that one's my bad).
Bub's - junkie, petty thief, robbed from his family, killed a dude with a hot shot
Lester - Took part in the Season 5 nonsense.
Prezbo - Blinded a kid in Season 1
Steve Earle - I can't recall if he gave his wife HIV. I'll need to put the dvd in this weekend to find out.
OTOH, he got a solid majority of those with school-age children. People who actually wanted their kids educated voted for him. People who see the school district (and the rest of the government) as a means of support first, education second, voted for Gray.
Also, DC has a closed primary. Not semi-closed, but closed, so that Independents are not allowed to vote in either primary (instead of being able to pick, like in some states.) Not many Republicans, but a surprisingly high number of people register as independents and then can't vote in the Democratic Primary.
Would it be racist for me to say that I have a sneaking suspicion that this black writer sees the DC Public Schools as an institution whose primary raison d'etre is to provide employment to black college graduates, both in teaching positions and in bloated administrative staffs, and that he thinks some Korean chick shouldn't be allowed to come along and mess that up?
No you would not be racist. You would be correct. The truth sucks sometimes.
Look at it this way, imagine if the vast majority of the teachers and administrators in DC were Korean. Do you think Milloy would be upset to see the reform then? I sure don't think so.
Milloy is an out and out racist. If any white person talked about black people moving to the suburbs the way he talks about whites moving to the city, they wouldn't be able to get a job this side of Lew Rockwell's website. The fact that Milloy keeps one at an allegedly prestigious newspaper is disgusting.
I don't think that it would even float in the 2010 version of Lew's site. He has far less race-baiting than the "creative editors" would suggest, and most of what could be described as such is quite old.
Fluffy, you're only wrong in limiting your suspicion to the DC school system. The entire DC government is nothing more than a jobs/patronage program.
Fenty's biggest crime in the eyes of his biggest opponents was that he was directing his patronage at his own group of cronies rather than the old group that Marion Barry had showered with Government Cheese.
Fenty was no angel, though he probably did shake a few things up that needed it.
I think this is wrong. This is a description of most school districts. DC differs in that it is first and foremost a political machine, then a jobs program, and third an education system.
But, but, liberaltarian! We can totally work with them! They have all kinds of secret* small government ideas! They're for the little guy, so they are libertarian's natural allies!
I know how the "tea party" people feel, the anger, venom and bile that many of them showed during the recent House vote on health-care reform.
I know because I want to spit on them, take one of their "Obama Plan White Slavery" signs and knock every racist and homophobic tooth out of their Cro-Magnon heads.
Why would anyone read this? Even if you agree with him his style is borderline psychotic rambling. Add to that the sheer stupidity of his comments and you get a barely coherent pile of stupid shit.
This is your mainstream Democratic Party, people. It knows how to speak in complete sentences, it knows how to masturbate, and it knows how to destroy effective educational systems and replace them with expensive jobs/vote buying programs and campaign cash cows disguised as education systems.
Reminds me a little of back in the day when Carl Rowan used to write all of his anti-gun columns all the time, until the day when he shot that kid on his property with his illegal gun. Or of all of these pro-tax critters on Capitol Hill who don't even pay their taxes.
Leftists are such vile, hypocritical lowlife scumbags.
So the promising DC school reform crusade is kaput because -- essentially -- the mayor gave Maya Angelou the snubbing she's been asking for lo these many years.
And this breathtakingly dimwitted and bigoted columnist -- who doesn't live there -- gets a hard-on just thinking about all the despair of yuppified white parents who moved in with hearts full of charter school dreams.
And it sucks for Welch because he married a committed urbanite and likes to live close to work.
The gentrification of DC was going on before Fenty became mayor, and it will undoubtedly continue well past Gray's term as mayor. Basically, the economy around these parts is humming right along thanks to the continued growth of Leviathan. There is plenty of money floating around to support the continuing yuppification of DC (which is not all a bad thing, by the way).
Also, the commutes around here are so bad (either driving for hours in your car or suffering in the overcrowded Metro) that living in the dismal shithole that is DC doesn't seem so bad by comparison.
Yep, DC was 30.8% white/ 60% black in 2000. By 2009, it was 40.6% white/54% black. Gray is going to have a real tough race on his hands in 4 years when the demographics lean even more white and he's pissed off enough white people to make them want to show up at the polls.
But whatever, political speech is for independently wealthy types who can fund magazines and think tanks, not for school teachers organizing on behalf of their own interests.

"But whatever, political speech is for independently wealthy types who can fund magazines and think tanks, not for school teachers organizing on behalf of their own interests."
I missed the part where Welch came out against political speech...
...I saw him taking issue with what they were saying--not their right to say it.
If the teacher's right to free speech means Welch can't disagree with what they say, then that's...ridiculous!
Serwer's just blowing hot air on this, right? Welch never attacked their right to say what they want, did he?
I'm guessing Serwer's comment is a vague and veiled commentary on the fact that us right-wing fanatics are 'free speech absolutists' who believe that there should be no restrictions on campaign spending... or something crazy like that.
If I'm wrong about that, I have no fucking idea what he meant by that.
Serwer is just being an idiot, something that apparently comes naturally. His response is titled "Fenty and Rhee are Democrats", and his main argument seems to be (a) Obama is a Democrat and so are Fenty and Rhee, and (b) there are people who write like Courtland Milloy on the right too.
So it looks like non-sequiturs and tu-quoque fallacies are two legs of his triple threat. I'm dying of suspense to find out what the third is.
Last time I checked, Fenty and Rhee were Democrats, and Democratic President Barack Obama's administration had just given them $75 million in federal money to implement their agenda.
So democrat local officials, democrat congress, democrat senate and democrat president.
The question I have is why does education party run such crappy and expensive schools?
Adam Serwer, The American Prospect's "triple threat," whose work people keep telling me I should like, reacts to this post with a pungent blast of self-superior incomprehension:
Adam Serwer's post on his lively blog has one comment:

and
followed the basic right-wing script, except its racial resentment was directed at whites rather than blacks, which is why it made Welch and any number of other D.C.-based white folks on the right so angry.
Well it was only a matter of time before left wing columnists started mimicking the left wing comment trolls here.
"What you disagree with us!??!! You must be a racist right wing tea bagger!!!!"
I don't know... should i be impressed with the incoherent rants of Max and Tony for being so leading edge? Or should i be disappointed at Adam Serwer for adopting the Max and Tony line of inventing intentionally inaccurate strawmen to beat on?
This should not be a problem, no matter your school system. Just get your kid tested into the gifted program and you're set until middle school. If she's not gifted, an independent tester can be easily found who will dispute the school district testers for a fee. (wink, wink)
Then you will have to go private, that's just the way it is. No amount of visiting or PTSA participation or letter writing or school board meeting attending will change the fact that urban public middle and high school are unsatisfactory. Not because the board and administrators are black, but because they are black hacks.
This reminded me of an old El-P song from Soundbombing II. It had every lefty complaint in the world and no real point to make. It was just a list of grievances and ad hominems without a real premise or conclusion. But at least it was a song, and it sounded good.
Because that guy's article reads like this, and I'll eschew punctuation because of its breathlessness: right-wing racist Tea Party supporters who are funded by millionaires and support election funding by corporations complain about (admittedly) racist articles and election spending by PACs.
Which is a gross mischaracterization of the argument. Is this all you need for a job in serious punditry these days? Ad hominems, false ironies, and "you too's!?"
You were surprisingly mild on the guy (I wouldn't have been), but the triple threat crack was pretty good. However, I had really been hoping for a much more brutal alt-text on his picture.
That's what the comment section is for. No need to dirty your hands when the denizens of H&R comments are willing, able, and already covered in mud from head to toe. (at least a few)
Oh, and one other thing - I said Welch is a problem because he's drawing fire from the left for going after one of their corrupt garden gnomes.
Libertarianism has to be a big problem for both the left and right, because guys like Welch actually practice the ideals that the other two use as fundraising carrots.
At Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, I graduated with a focus in broadcast, but have since been working mostly in print and on the web. I still consider myself a journalistic "triple threat" with strong print, broadcast, and new media skills. My writing has appeared in The American Prospect, The Root, The Washington Post, The New York Daily News, The Village Voice, and Utne.
My writing has appeared in the Washington Post too, much to the dismay of my then-roomate who wanted to do the Jumble himself.
You must be doing something right, Matt. Adam Serwer response shows all the symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome, except he is the captive of a dysfunctional ideology instead of Red Brigade terrorist holding a gun to his ugly ass face.
Last time I checked, Fenty and Rhee were Democrats, and Democratic President Barack Obama's administration had just given them $75 million in federal money to implement their agenda.
You are confused if you think that the scale is anywhere near being balanced. On one side, you have two individuals and a small sum of money coming from the Federal Government, and on the other side, the destructive history of Democratic power struggles and promotion of various educational movements over the past three generations cultivating in the promotion of ignorance and weighing down any chance these kids have in life.
Osiris is not impressed. The entire left in this country deserves to drown in a river of shit. Given your vile reaction Serwer, I have no doubt that you know it even if you don't wanna face the harsh truth concerning your worth.
I think South Park dreamed up a better fate for her. I was merely riffing on the Egyptian Netherworld with that river of shit remark because I'm the kind of pretentious asshole who likes to do that sort over extended allusion thing, and it plays on his unfortunate last name which is a bonus.
Congrats, Matt -- I didn't think you could make me hate Courtland Milloy any more than I actually already did. Finding out he lives in PG County on top of everything else...pricelessly evil.
Sorry about your children's future being screwed over. Oh yeah, and I'm sorry that thousands of D.C. schoolkids are about to be sold out.
Do what I did. Get out of the entire Washington, DC area and leave it behind forever. Suburban Maryland, Northern Virginia, the District......none of them are worth it. Crowded, expensive, and packed with stress.
I left in 1994 and I will never go back. Pittsburgh is far from perfect but I'm originally from here and I don't have to contend with any of the DC area crap. Houses are affordable, too.
As a public school teacher who attended good and shitty public schools and just pulled his kid out of one of the latter, I'm not going to enter one of the extremely simplistic pundit gunfights on the subject -- except to note that billionaires Broad and Gates have more influence on DLC/DNC education policy than all of America's teachers combined, so this analysis seemed a little odd. Arne Duncan's public stances and Race to the Top reflect the Rhee model.
On a personal note, you have no problem with commenters talking about "libtards" and "drowning them in a river of shit"? Ever since you went "warblogging" in 2001, your net followers are always far less reasonable and far more right than you yourself. You could write this off as just a net phenomenon, but I notice that here at least you never rebuke or take them on despite being quite active in the comments section.

That is because my comment was entirely reasonable. We are not here to hold your hand or make you anymore comfortable in the dissolution of this nation of which you play your part in. You may even note, Matt himself was every bit as harsh to the clown car line up that runs the show as I was so in all likelihood you are barking up the wrong tree, pooch. Note as well, except to note that billionaires Broad and Gates have more influence on DLC/DNC education policy than all of America's teachers combined was some seriously disingenuous bullshit. Gates has only recently made his presence in the field of education felt in an area he felt compelled to get involved because the teaching guilds long ago created the problem. Your organizations still far out lobby him in both congress and the state houses.
If you got a problem with me, deal with me, don't go whining to Matt to enforce a ban hammer, you little bitch.
Note as well, except to note that billionaires Broad and Gates have more influence on DLC/DNC education policy than all of America's teachers combined was some seriously disingenuous bullshit.
Two billionaires alone have $55 million invested in charter schools in LA unified.
I don't know that there is a precise algorithm for influence, but for the previous 10 years, White House education policy has mirrored the "run schools like a business" premises championed by Eli Broad, rather than the "increase funding for education" position of the unions.
I don't think unions are likely to be the primary solution to problems in public education, but neither are they the primary cause. They have just fought for scraps for a century in a profession once assigned by society to lower-middle class unmarried women expected to live off the coal and vegetables contributed by the local families.
"You could write this off as just a net phenomenon, but I notice that here at least you never rebuke or take them on despite being quite active in the comments section."
For the most part, we police ourselves nicely. Feel wronged?
Stand up for yourself.
Whenever anything doesn't go the way you like, do you always start looking for an authority figure?
That's one of the reasons I'd never send kids to public schools... I think "education" means, among other things, learning how to think critically and solve your own problems--why would a bureaucratic system like public schools want to teach people how to do that?
There's a conflict of interest in there somewhere, definitely.
Actually, the use of the word "loathsome" -- usually used to describe monsters and insects -- and other overheated adjectives are like throwing soda-drenched meat to the yellowjackets.
Yes, you are quite loathsome, Scheer. You are every passive aggressive manipulator well versed in machination to get ahead I ever dealt with before becoming my own boss. Here you, are, oh Matt, why are you out there on the lunatic fringe instead of on the inside where you belong. Don't you see what they are doing to you? Such dreadful company, Matt. I don't know how you can tolerate it. Now, you have started this fight, but it isn't to late, Matt. No, it isn't to late. You know what you need to do to make things right.
Understand, however, that not all manufacturers, banks and institutions of learning are propped up. Only the ones with a politically connected staff or ownership.
Which translates to the reality that the propping up of such organizations (banks, manufacturers, schools) is only an excuse to transfer taxpayer wealth to the staffing of the organizations.
The organizations are still failing, but the taxpayer continues to pay the employees.
He also was one of those who spread the lie that the tea party spit at CBC members and hurled racial epithets at them and never corrected the record.
Fenty brought some of this on himself by refusing to suck up to the local black powers , by entering into no bid contracts with his frat brothers and by treating the council arrogantly. OTOH he fairly distributed city funds throughout all the wards and picked Rhee and Granier, among others who are damned good.
All the money and effort that went into improving the schools are now gone, just like the voucher program that fell by the wayside a few months ago--victims of the anti-white, anti-education, pro-union forces.
"victims of the anti-white, anti-education, pro-union forces."
Yes, because if there is one thing teachers' union care about, it's being anti-white. That's the most important thing to them. The self-pity of white people in this board never ceases to amaze me.
Anyone who goes against a machine as established as the DC schools is going to get eaten.
No person can hold an office for years and not make some little mistake. If you are in a machine city, that mistake will be the sum total of the discussion in local media running up to the next election.
You will not have one red cent with which to get your own story out. All the local interests, even if they agree with you, are going to back the strong horse. Who is the strong horse?
You are the maverick politico, and your opponent is the system that can turn out 8th graders who 92% of the time cannot perform at grade level in math. At first glance, you seem to have the advantage. Who could support such an affliction to the city's youth?
But if one realizes that your opponent been able to starve children's minds for decades, and no one has brought them down, now who looks like the strong horse?
They look like a flippin' juggernaught.
I now live overseas. People like Milloy are one of the reasons. I don't know when America decided that striving to excel was not a good thing to do, but I can guarantee you that Asia isn't following along. These people work incessantly trying to get their children the best possible education and would immediately bounce any pol who even intimated that families should settle for less.
The people who disparage DC on this board are absolutely correct. I wouldn't even consider living there again for triple the salary I make now. However, it's just another example of how Democrat Party stupidity, mingled with pure evil, screws up urban areas. They don't HAVE to be hellholes but if liberal Dems are in charge for decades, as they have been in most of urban America, they certainly will be. Detroit, Camden, Newark, Cleveland, Atlanta, Miami, San Francisco, LA, Baltimore, DC, the list goes on and on... They're all festering near-third-world dumps courtesy of liberal Democrats. I keep wondering when people are going to wake up and realize that liberal Democrats WANT EXACTLY THAT RESULT.
In a just world, there would be a bounty on those bastards.
My mother and stepfather, newly-married, chose to make a "political statement" by enrolling my brother, sister, and me in the Washington, D.C. public schools (in my case, Alice Deal Junior High School).
Long story--short point: do not, do NOT make political statements with your child's life. Your local elementary school may be dreamy--this year. When kids bring guns to school in (now) middle school? It's not so nice. Been there, saw it, was eternally thankful when my folks smartened up after only one year.
Willfully enrolling a child in the D.C. public schools is tantamount to child abuse.
Bailing water on a sinking ship is foolish when one can easily swim ashore.
If DC is so bad, why do people continue to live there?
I'm not contesting the fact that DC is bad, only seeking to illustrate that no one is "trapped" there, at least not by external forces.
I have no sympathy for someone who chooses to live in a slum and to immerse themselves AND THEIR CHILDREN in a gangrenous culture. A culture of self-destruction that teaches its members to cut their own throats so that others can be blamed.
Leave. Don't stay there. I would say burn the place to the ground, but that wouldn't really solve the problem. DC is just a location, it is the mindset of those who define it that is the problem. If they didn't live in DC, they'd simply live elsewhere, congregated like rats in a sewer. Only they can make the choice not to be rats any longer. You can't make that choice for them. What you can do is refuse to live among them, and more importantly not to allow your children to be influenced by them.
Sending your kids into a public dis-education system is nothing less than child abuse, especially when Fairfax county is just next-door.
And your original post was all about how "you" pay hefty taxes and how horrible it is for "you" that you can't send your children to public school etc etc. Then all of a sudden it's about how sorry you feel for all those "other" parents whose children are trapped. Oh please, you original rant was about "yourself", stop trying to make it about other helpless, trapped people. It's pathetic.

Serwer's response is incomprehensible. As far as I can tell, he is saying:
(1) Milloy and the anti-Fenty/Rhee voters are racists. (He calls this "inverse racial entitlement").
(2) Isn't it funny when white people are offended by people being racist against them?
I assume that Welch would be equally offended by an entrenched white majority driving its public schools into the ground out of a combination of anti-black sentiment and patronage. What's wierd is that Serwer doesn't seem bothered by what he himself seems to believe is racism.
Although blacks and whites recognize the importance of the public schools as a vehicle for educating their children, blacks also see the school system as a primary employer, providing jobs to thousands of teachers, school bus drivers, administrators and secretaries. When Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee laid off hundreds of teachers, many blacks saw something more than a simple purge of poorly performing educators. They saw an assault on economic opportunity.
"He fired those teachers, that did it for me," said Wilson Givens, a retired, black equipment operator who lives in Anacostia, in Southeast, and voted for Fenty in 2006. "Does he understand that a job is a family's livelihood? I didn't know anybody who was fired personally, but I can relate. I know how it feels, and I felt for those teachers and their families. That was it for me. Would never trust him again."
What you had mentioned is quite reasonable! Beautifully written article sir.

Where you been hiding it? I thought I was back living in Portland, OR this past summer.
Even Burning Man was unusually chilly.
The sun, while technically a star, is still a business. There's no way it's visiting California unless the business climate changes.
This was wonderful.
Try burning a woman. They give off more heat.
Lots of scumbags comment about my home state of California who don't currently live here, so I suppose it's a wash.
Do they complain bitterly about the social and aesthetic habits of the new arrivals in town while doing so?
Dunno, but they certainly complain a lot about "bureaucrats" and "teachers" with their large pensions destroying life as we know it.
STEVE SMITH DEMAND DEFINED-BENEFIT RAPE PENSION!
I'm sure if you squint hard enough you can find the category difference there. Also, some of my best brothers are California teachers.
Great googly-moogly! Where do I sign up?
Trust me, it's not all it is cracked up to be. When you have to drive 2 hours to buy anything, you start reconsidering.
Not a bug. A feature.
I'm pretty sure that in many parts of Wyoming I can reach Amazon in less than two hours.
Matt, you forgot to put in the file name of the movie you wanted to play. Your player is there, but not the target file.
Fixed, sorry.
Yeah - and having a child was a choice Matt...
but seriously - move -
I appreciate the sentiments of all three of youse, but I like living in a city and walking to work/pre-school.
Then come to Seattle. It's got similar problems, but they're just not as bad. Yet.
And your kid will graduate pre-school eventually, right?
He's not "graduating", he's moving from Pre-school into Kindergarten.
I grew up in a huge Levittown(sic?)-style suburban grid, and while je ne regrette rien, it's not something I'm eager to go back to. And my wife is an urban critter.
Dude, live in Arlington. Arlington is just as much a city as DC. Maybe more. Or live in Bethesda.
I've been in NYC a few times when it was butt ass -F and had to walk to a subway station to wait for 10 minutes for a train, and thought "Do people really think this is better?"
my wife is an urban critter
Disappointing one's spouse is the best part of marriage. That's why we don't let gays get married in NoVA.
Cosotarian. J'accuse!
Dropped am "m" there in my haste to out Matt. At least the French is correct.
I added cosmotarian to my spell check dictionary.
With enough experience they get over it. Took mine 30 years though.
Houston works during the 3 months of the year the weather permits.
Preach, Matt!
As for moving: fuck that. Why don't THEY -- the race-baiting power-grubbers -- move? Why are the people who just want to be left alone the ones who are always told to move if they don't like it, even by their supposed friends?
+10
This strangely reminds me of the white mayor who won on a split ticket on the HBO show The Wire.
I never liked his character. He was whiny, petulant, and a Democrat amongst Democrats. His school system was $15 million- $50 million (doesn't matter, it was a show) in the hole, and he and his administration still found a way to blame republicans in a city (Baltimore) where Democrats outnumber Republicans "nine to one".
Yes, it was a show, but living in an overwhelmingly Democratic district, it swerves shockingly close to the truth.
Republicans in the state capital - not in Bawlimore
I don't know if you saw the show, or the episode in particular, but he wanted to go to the Republican governor to get money to bail out the Democratically controlled schools. When the Republican governor wanted to announce a press conference surrounding the bailout (which he should, and I would have done the same), the Ballmer mayor balked. Awesome show.
Carcetti was a piece of shit. But there weren't too many good people. Sure, there's Bunny and Gus (Ed Burns and David Simon?), but who else?
Bubs, Lester, Prezbo, Steve Earle, Beadie Russell
Throw a bone to our reportery types here, don't forget Gus, and for badassness, Chris Partlow.
Bub's - junkie, petty thief, robbed from his family, killed a dude with a hot shot
That was an accident. That hot shot was meant for someone else.
I watched Bubs' entire arc with my heart in my mouth, but "meant to murder someone else" is not much of a character reference.
Omar comin'!
Don't forget Cutty as one of the (now) good guys.
Courtland Milloy: Matt Welchermann's Worst Person in the World
Mayor Fenty, whom I voted for, got 20% of the vote in the Black community. I'm sorry, but he must have been doing something wrong.
Shouldn't you be at home writing The Red Badge of Courage or something?
Yeah, he fired [poor performing] black teachers. Big mistake!
Like the children in Lake Woebegone, all teachers in DC are above average.
A vote against Fenty is a vote against Vanneman.
The Fenty campaign tried to overturn the closed primary, but failed. He would have had a much better chance with independents voting.
This.
I'd say it's more anti-institutionalist than it is racist.
DC differs in that it is first and foremost a political machine, then a jobs program, and third an education system.
smart comment, it rings true
Anti-Stuff White People Like? Did Matt really write that? No cocktail party for you tonight, Matt.
You do know he was referring to the humorous book of that title, right?
The book is based on a blog.
http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/
You said bad things about Democrats and that is not acceptable for cosmotarians.
This is your mainstream Democratic Party, people.
But, but, liberaltarian! We can totally work with them! They have all kinds of secret* small government ideas! They're for the little guy, so they are libertarian's natural allies!
*Very, very secret.
I followed Matt's alt text directions and found this. Milloy really is an entertaining piece of work.
Courtland Milloy: Congressmen show grace, restraint in the face of disrespect
Milloy is a despicable black racist. He keeps his job despite incitig violence only because of the color of his skin.
Oh, please come down to TX and try that. They'll need an EPA permit to bury Courtland's ass because of possible lead contamination of the groundwater.
Slums are more authentic. I don't want none of that fakey prosperity shit anywhere near me.
how bout that authentic fakey slum shit?
(yeah, i should probabley be fed to hobos for linking to that)...
From one of the comments on the linked page:
"Why encourage any of the trash that constitutes the modern WaPo editorial page by talking about it?"
Makes sense to me.
Why would anyone read this? Even if you agree with him his style is borderline psychotic rambling. Add to that the sheer stupidity of his comments and you get a barely coherent pile of stupid shit.
He does have an awesome porn 'stache.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who's been tracking milloy.
http://reason.com/blog/2010/07.....nt_1805257
I've heard that Milloy likes to fuck sheep. Can anyone here confirm?
Goats. I have proof.
Some of Courtland Milloy's critics claim that he fucks sheep. Other claim he fucks goats. Milloy can disprove neither claim.
FTFY
DC sounds awesome.
I took a shit in DC once. Then I moved on.
I spent a month there one night.
2 week 8th grade school trip all over the East Coast for me.
The big event was the cheery blossoms in mid spring and the whole place was flooded.
New York, Boston and Philadelphia were way better.
Screw the schools. DC doesn't even have its own My Other Mortgage. Time to pull chocks.
Milloy sounds like the black Jay Mariotti. Hired to stir up shit and over time he winds up believing his own writing.
Myopic little twits....Milloy says I have the right to have an opinion about D.C. politics. "That's the beauty of the First Amendment," he says.
God, Milloy is such a horse's ass. But I do agree the First Amendment is a beautiful thing.
I recall watching Courtland Milloy's "commentaries" on BET (i.e., Black Entertainment Television) back in the day. Pure, unadulterated dumbassness.
But I guess he looks good on the masthead...a real shop-window journalist...and he didn't pull no trains like Nathan McCall.
Standards, people!
But whatever, political speech is for independently wealthy types who can fund magazines and think tanks, not for school teachers organizing on behalf of their own interests.
Wow.
I know...
But whatever, political speech is for people who want to vote to give themselves more of other people's money, not for people who think that's bullshit
and fixed
The DC teachers union can't even organize their own local election. http://www.afro.com/sections/n.....oryid=2282
UPDATE: Adam Serwer, The American Prospect's "triple threat," whose work people keep telling me I should like, reacts to this post with a pungent blast of self-superior incomprehension:
Woot!!
Matt started a Friday afternoon columnist war.
I am so glad I subscribed today.
So far Matt's winning.
You know who else was a triple threat and started a war on a Friday afternoon...
OJ Simpson?
Is there anything you can't ruin?
As great as VP was, she never spit fire like Matt.
What are Adam Serwer's triple threats, anyway?
I'm assuming arrogance, ignorance, and flatulence. Deadly, indeed!
I swear I had forgotten about this line when I wrote the above:
"Adam Serwer [...] reacts to this post with a pungent blast of self-superior incomprehension"
It appears I was right!!!
We may have just discovered who Tony is.
Que es mas loathsome?
I think you meant to say "Quien."
Si Senor
I'm dying of suspense to find out what the third is.
He claimed Matt is a racist, right wing, tea bagger.
Of course there are three there so that might be the triple threat all by itself.
Adam Serwer's post on his lively blog has one comment:
It's kind of funny to watch Tea Party boosters descend into a furious rage over signs of an inverse sense of racial entitlement among some political figures in Washington, D.C.
and
followed the basic right-wing script, except its racial resentment was directed at whites rather than blacks, which is why it made Welch and any number of other D.C.-based white folks on the right so angry.
Or should i be disappointed at Adam Serwer for adopting the Max and Tony line of inventing intentionally inaccurate strawmen to beat on?
where I have sincere hopes about placing my daughter in a public school system
Jesus Fucking Christ
What kind of monster are you?
Joke.
I'm going to go ahead and declare this the winning comment on this thread.
Are you going to let Adam call you a right-winger? I thought those used to be fighting words for libertarians?
Welch i think has hit the big time.
He can now brush off such criticisms with "reacts to this post with a pungent blast of self-superior incomprehension"
and those on the left understand how huge of a burn it is.
I didn't want my response to be longer than his post, so I had to leave quite a few idiot assumptions aside.
Oh, we're making assumptions alright.
Where are the sheep? We wouldn't want Sewrer's spasm of smug superiority to cause him to suddenly lose his inhibitions.
You're a huge problem, Welch. Your actual defense of the little guy - and teh children, exposes the left as the corrupt pile of horseshit that it is.
As if the right is any better.
As if the right is any better.
Not everything is politics.
Unless you want it so.
Which is why DC Schools continue to destroy children's lives.
Agreed, but in this instance, the protection of the teachers union and government jobs program for hacks is a left led operation.
If this were about the WOD or pron, then the comment would have been directed at the other corrupt pile of horseshit.
Oh, and one other thing - I said Welch is a problem because he's drawing fire from the left for going after one of their corrupt garden gnomes.
Libertarianism has to be a big problem for both the left and right, because guys like Welch actually practice the ideals that the other two use as fundraising carrots.
Yeah. I don't really get it either.
the link is to his portfolio. ie a short list of stories that show his range in journalism work.
The stories he lists looks like they cover only two subjects:
Race issues and civil rights abuses involving the war on terror.
Perhaps there is a 3rd i am not seeing....or perhaps the fact that there is only 2 is part of the joke.
update: from the caption below his picture:
Adam Serwer blogs about civil rights, human rights and criminal justice.
It reminds me of when The Da Vinci Code came out and people kept telling me they were sure I would like it because I'm into "art."
My writing has appeared in the Washington Post too, much to the dismay of my then-roomate who wanted to do the Jumble himself.
Bet you did the Sudoku puzzle as well, you greedy intellectual snob.
So I tried at least 4 different theorems to the "triple threat" quote and it came down to that....
fuck
My best work still hangs on mom's fridge. Beat that!
I loled hard at this. I'm sure your writing was far more accurate and useful...
I'm pretty sure there's all kind of sheep fuckin' up in this bitch.
I think you mean "sheep-fuckin'"
You must be doing something right, Matt. Adam Serwer response shows all the symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome, except he is the captive of a dysfunctional ideology instead of Red Brigade terrorist holding a gun to his ugly ass face.
Department of Corrections:
Adam Serwer response shows all the symptoms . . .
Adam Serwer, in the verbal sewage he spouted without much flow control aimed at you, shows all the symptoms
'wanna' gah!!1, that sticks out like a sore thumb after removing all the other colloquialism but missing that one.
The entire left in this country deserves to drown in a river of shit.
horrible mental image right there...rosie o'donnel in a tributary of poop?
I think South Park dreamed up a better fate for her. I was merely riffing on the Egyptian Netherworld with that river of shit remark because I'm the kind of pretentious asshole who likes to do that sort over extended allusion thing, and it plays on his unfortunate last name which is a bonus.
Matt, please refrain from posting JournoList bile, even if it does make you look good.
Obama is all about Obama. He doesn't care about those he "used" to get elected. He should be called Hypocrite in Charge.

Alan is very much correct in this sentence.
Using a bureaucracy to teach people to think critically is like using a fire extinguisher to light a cigarette.
Actually, the shittiness of public schools probably teaches kids independence more than the isolationist private school bubble.
It's a libertarian message board.
We don't even register our user names.
We have names now? Damn, I must have missed out.
Don't you think that game gets tiresome?
You're saying I'm like all your horrible bosses? Who presumably were evil liberals?
Honestly, that's just a weird thing to say.
Can you tell me with a straight face that your entire worldview is not shaped by self-righteous, aggrieved rage?
There's nothing inconsistent in spending trillions to prop up failing banks and manufacturers and spending trillions to prop up failing schools.
Especially when the same people are doing both.
No government employee unions.
And Adam, which communuity, white or black, is more in need of having better schools? This is like a church preaching against middle classness.
Wow. He played the race card right out of the gate.
Bet you never expected that, huh?
Matt--
My mother and stepfather, newly-married, chose to make a "political statement" by enrolling my brother, sister, and me in the Washington, D.C. public schools (in my case, Alice Deal Junior High School).
Who exactly are you calling rats in the sewer? Wow, I can actually imagine. What a wonderful place libertarian paradise is.
"I'm sure your white-boy mirth and appreciation of union rights will come as welcome consolation to the fact that their children are trapped."
Adam Serwer is not a white boy, so what "white boy mirth" are you talking about?
