Yet Another Dispatch From the Budgepocalypse Lookout Post

The first sentence from the Congressional Budget Office's hot-off-the-presses Monthly Budget Review:

The federal government incurred a budget deficit of $434 billion in the first four months of fiscal year 2010, CBO estimates, almost $40 billion more than the shortfall recorded in the same period last year.

The CBO uses the word "unsustainable" for a reason. If Roland Emmerich directed a movie about the budget, I'm guessing this is what the first act would look like.

Can you give that to me in per-hour units? Or maybe how close to the sun a stack of dollar bills that size would reach?

    1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

I figured it out. In billion dollar bills it's this high.

      1. heller   15 years ago

        LOL

      2. Joe M   15 years ago

You really should give credit to Xeones for that one.

        1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

I dutifully convey credit to Xeones for that one and thank you for mentioning where I read it before.

          1. heller   15 years ago

I retract my LOL because of plagiarism.

The CBO uses the word "unsustainable" for a reason.

    They're racists?

    1. Rich   15 years ago

      LOL

  3. Fist of Etiquette   15 years ago

The CBO estimates in past tense.

    1. Joe M   15 years ago

FY2010 for the Federal government started on Oct. 1st, 2009, I believe.

      1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

        Correct

      2. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

        IF(MONTH>9,YEAR+1,YEAR)

Something like that for returning federal FY in your favorite system, IIRC.

      3. Fist of Etiquette   15 years ago

No, what I found strange is CBO put out a report without actual numbers, but now that I think about the sheer size of the federal budget, I doubt the numbers from last year are anything but estimates.

        1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

You should have seen it in the days befor Donald Reagan.

Fed checks were IBM punch cards and expendetures were revised over decades.

  4. Warty   15 years ago

I wish Chony were here to tell us how we didn't care about deficits when Bush was in charge. Come back, Chony.

    1. BeesInTheBrain   15 years ago

      Bush was in charge? source?

      1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

He had to be in charge since Rove murdered Washington for everything to be his fault.

    2. Episiarch   15 years ago

Summoning only works with DONDEROOO, Warty, now that LoneMoron got himself banned. Which I highly disapprove of, by the way. How can I write more installments of Lonewacko: the Novel without him coming around? I'm sure not going to his site.

      1. Warty   15 years ago

I'm not sorry. And you're not my dad.

        1. Episiarch   15 years ago

Episiarch: Why do you disappoint me? [Warty starts crying] Second by second, you waste my time.

NutraSweet: Episiarch, lets just have some fun out here, okay?
Episiarch: Why? He sucks. C'mon Sucky, before you ruin the entirety of my future.

          NutraSweet: Episiarch--

Episiarch: The only reason God doesn't erase you from the face of the Earth, Warty, is because you amuse him somehow.

          1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

            You guy(s) are fag.

            1. heller   15 years ago

I don't think the are allows the s to be optional...

            2. heller   15 years ago

Nevermind, it doesn't make sense either way.

  5. Kevin   15 years ago

This cycle of spending, borrowing, and printing more currency will not end in the foreseeable future. Even if the Republicans take Congress later this year, this pattern will continue.

The Republican voters including the misguided tea party activist are getting ready to place another batch of Big Government, Statist Republicans back in charge (i.e. Kirk, McCain, etc).

I am already hearing the same whining as in 2008. That is "We got to hold our nose and vote for Fill in the Blank." Pathetic! There are more than two parties to choose from on most ballots. If not, write someone's name in.

Hey Tea Party Activists & Conservatives! How is that whole taking over the Republican Party thing working out for you?

    1. Brandybuck   15 years ago

How is that whole taking over the Republican Party thing working out for you?

It sucks. But at least I can hold my head a bit higher than those fauxtarians who supported Obama.

  6. Homer   15 years ago

    It's tragic 'cause it's true.

    Whoo-Hoo!

  7. Pro Libertate   15 years ago

    Unsustainable means please stop now.

    1. John Tagliaferro   15 years ago

Not unless it is a safeword.

  8. RG   15 years ago

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

  9. BakedPenguin   15 years ago

If Roland Emmerich directed a movie about the budget...

...it would suck as much as the actual budget does. Also, if anyone was going to make a budget-based movie, I see Jim Jarmusch doing it. His movies are all about lack of communication (transparency!), and as slow and tedious as reading the actual budget would be.

    1. Pro Libertate   15 years ago

      BP,

True story--I dated a woman a while back who dated Jarmusch at Northwestern. Yes, she would have been an older woman, since I'm a good 15 years or so younger than he is.
