Presidential Promises and Pretenses
Obama's contribution to the "deficit of trust"
The day before President Obama delivered his State of the Union address last week, The New York Times reported that "aides said he would accept responsibility, though not necessarily blame" for failing to deliver on promises he made during his campaign. If you accept responsibility for something bad, aren't you accepting blame by definition? Not if you're Barack Obama, who has a talent for accepting responsibility while minimizing and deflecting it.
"With all the lobbying and horse trading, the process [for producing health care legislation] left most Americans wondering, 'What's in it for me?'" Obama said in his SOTU speech. "I take my share of the blame." For breaking his oft-repeated promise to televise health care negotiations on C-Span? For agreeing to provisions that would benefit special interests at the expense of the general public? No. "For not explaining it more clearly to the American people"—as if the problem could have been solved with a nifty PowerPoint presentation.
At his meeting with House Republicans on Friday, Obama conceded that pointing out his failure to televise health care negotiations was "a legitimate criticism." But he also said coverage would have been hard to arrange because the negotiations occurred in several locations. Anyway, he said, "overwhelmingly the majority of it actually was on C-Span, because it was taking place in congressional hearings"—as if he had promised that C-Span would continue its longstanding practice of covering congressional hearings.
The president is even less forthright when it comes to the fiscal responsibility he keeps promising. On Monday he declared, "We simply cannot continue to spend as if deficits don't have consequences, as if waste doesn't matter, as if the hard-earned tax money of the American people can be treated like Monopoly money."
Yet somehow he manages to do so. Obama's much-ballyhooed spending "freeze" would affect just one-eighth of the budget, would not begin until 2011, and would be accompanied by continued increases in outlays on the president's pet projects.
If you are serious about reducing spending, you don't increase it. Yet Obama's proposed budget for fiscal year 2011 totals $3.8 trillion, compared to the $3.6 he proposed the previous year. The deficit would drop a bit, from a record $1.6 trillion to around $1.3 trillion, only because of increased tax revenue.
Last year Obama said the deficit, expected to be 11 percent of gross domestic product this year, would fall to a "sustainable" 3 percent by the end of his first term. His new budget projections, even with the benefit of optimistic assumptions, indicate that he will never reach that goal even if he serves two terms and that the deficit will rise above 5 percent of GDP after he leaves office.
On Friday the president blamed the economy for his fiscal incontinence, saying "most of the increases in this year's budget" were "a consequence of the automatic stabilizers that kick in because of this enormous recession." But as Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) noted, legislation signed by Obama increased domestic discretionary spending by 84 percent.
In addition to the health care transparency and spending restraint he has failed to deliver, Obama has broken promises to reduce the influence of special-interest lobbyists, to let people who like their current medical coverage keep it, to refrain from raising taxes on households earning less than $250,000 a year, to cut earmarks to 1994 levels, to take a more modest view of executive power and the "state secrets" privilege, to close Guantanamo by last month, to end medical marijuana raids, to allow five days of public review before signing bills, and to recognize the Armenian genocide. PolitiFact.com counts 15 broken promises so far, and its standards are conservative.
In his SOTU address, Obama bemoaned "a deficit of trust—deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works that have been growing for years." He blamed the public's "disappointment" and "cynicism" on powerful lobbyists, reckless bankers, highly paid CEOs, superficial TV pundits, and mud-slinging politicians. Conspicuously missing from the list: a president who breaks promises while pretending he isn't.

What do you expect? The guy is a Chicago politicians. He could hide behind a corkscrew.
Well if you combined him with a corkscrew and added wings and a stick, you'd have a caduceus.
Good Morning reason!
At this point, it would be easier to make a list of things Obama didn't/doesn't lie about.
I decided to go ahead and make such a list myself. Here it is:
LOL!
That's about how big my list is.
Great share thanks for the read!
Hey, that's not fair! He did meet his campaign pledge to get a dog. Well, sort of. It wasn't a rescue dog like he promised. But is is a dog! That's something!
a talent for accepting responsibility while minimizing and deflecting it
So he's not exactly a teflon president (Reagan) nor a tree-sap president (Carter). Obama is a house of mirrors, an illusion, a shape-shifter.
Which is really not accepting responsibility at all.
He does and he doesn't, simultaneously. He's the Equivocator in Chief.
The Parsin' President strikes again!
He's two, two, two liars in one!
hahha I agree lol
Pants fires have always been a scourge in DC.
And Detroit.
If you accept responsibility for something bad, aren't you accepting blame by definition? Not if you're Barack Obama,
By definition? You mean as in mandatory health insurance is not a tax definition?
I watched part of Barry's speech in NH yesterday at work. The guy still honestly believes that the American people want, neigh, NEED his ideas to function. Despite all indications to the contrary (tanking polls, Scott Brown etc.) The power of self-delusion is strong with this one.
Are you suggesting that the American people are horses?
Election results would indicate that sheep or cows would a better farm analogy.
Or donkeys.
Haha, you conservatives are truly ridiculous. i love how you're all too cowardly to use emails when you post as well.
Hey, if i make up an anti-Obama statement, how long do you think it'll take before one of these Hillbillys believes it and passes it on.
"Did you hear? Obama wants to kill medicare to pay for a pro-abortion headquarters on Venus."
ok, GO!
This from the true believers that elected this jackass. You are the ones who will believe in anything or anyone. If you life sucks that bad, spare us all. PS. Get a job and stop drinking the kool-aid. You are exactly what is wrong with this country. All opinion, no brains!!!
Wow, believing that Obama is doing a good job at this point tells us all we need to know about you. Keep it up, it just makes our job easier!
is the cool aide grape or lemon flavored?
haha I dont think thats what he is suggesting..
A church I attended before acknowledging that religion is BS had a minister like Obama. Way too inexperienced for his position, and got there by always moving up the next rung before anything was expected of him where he was at the time (and always getting out before being accountable for any results).
He, like the Obamassiah, he knew exactly what to say to ideologues looking for a messiah and so kept advancing in his career, and finally got to a position where there was no next level and was revealed to suck before he could move on. Even now, there are people who think believing in him is the Will Of God because he said the right things, even after certain accusations have been pretty much proven (and documented).
This has been a presidential perogative since Ulysses S. Grant (and probably before, I just can't find any documentation). How many times have you heard "Mistakes were made".
"Mistakes were made"
That reminds me of John Edwards' "I allowed myself to get to a place where I could let this happen."
Reminds me of when Bill O'Reilly wouldn't stop sexually harassing his coworkers: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/a.....kris1.html
Jim: Is that all you got? Really? What the hell does O'Reilly have to do with anything? Good grief idiot!
It's an old tactic out of the touchy-feely playbook: Acknowledging the problem is conflated with actually doing something about it. And then we break for lattes.
I couldnt agree more thanks for the post!
For fans of big government (both right and left), the only "consequence" a politician should ever have to bear is a tut-tut editorial in the New York Times. Anything else is "extreme".
Oh ok, Jim. If people who're pissed off would have brought automatic guns to a Bush Jr ralley 3 years ago, nobody would have called that "extreme."
If 3 years ago people would have been making dummies that looked the President Of The United States and hung them by their necks from trees, that would have been a perfectly normal expression personal beliefs.

Seems to me giving speeches is all Obama does. All bark, no bite.

Mistakes were made, but how could we help but make mistakes after BUSH!! BUSH!! BUSH!!!!
Bush is the new squirrel.
I dont agree with this comment lol!
Every time he speaks he weekens the nation. Obama will be blaming Bush for the next three years. He has been exposed for the fraud that he is. They just raised the dept ceiling 1.4 trillon and reports this morning that they will blow through that money by the end of this month. Hang on for we are in for a Rocky ride Bullwinkle.

i for one do not feel that our nation is weakened, in fact, i feel quite the opposite. i feel a renewed sense of conviction that voting for obama was the right choice. but, i'm terribly disappointed in the senate's ability to lead. i think the after 8 years of bush, and 1 year of obama - making sure people understand what obama walked into is entirely relevant. it's the same when you start a new job and you're trying to figure out how your predecessor could have screwed things up so bad, or why you were hired so quickly (to clean up someone else's mess).
The Progressive movement in the U.S.:

Barack Obama will not rest until there are 30-foot painted portraits of himself on the side of every building of the crumbling society he is creating. The man is a dangerous narcissist, a man incapable of speaking the truth, and a sad and petty tyrant who will ultimately set back race relations 60 years while putting us all in the poor house.
Obama ran a Centrist campaign while touting many Republican ideas (e.g. tax cuts for 95% and fiscal responsibility). Once elected he governed pretty far Left...much further Left than he campaigned. And now he's doing the same thing. He gives a Centrist State of the Union address, but the echo of his final words haven't even faded away and already he's back to pushing hard Left legislation (health care, Cap & Trade, civilian court for the panty bomber, etc.). Like all pols, ignore what he says. Pay attention ONLY to what he DOES.
Listen to yourself how about. His policies have certainly not been far left. They've been at the very least moderate, and to this socialist's eyes, center-right.
But you are going to listen to the rightwing media and agree with them that everything Obama does is radical. This is exactly the point he was making when he completely schooled the House GOP the other day: if they're gonna tell their constituents that everything Obama does is a radical leftist communist policy, how are they supposed to be able to work with him on anything? But that doesn't stop them from bitching that he never consults them.
Not been far-left? LOL! Wow.... not sure what to say to that. Right wing media? Woooooooowwwww.
You're being sarcastic, right?
If not, you're so far left, you make Mao look like Reagan... that would be the only way you could see things this way.
Wow.
How about health care?
We have, by a wide margin, the most right-wing health care system of any industrialized nation. If you disagree, please tell me which nation is to our right.
Now, if Obamacare passed, where would we fall on the spectrum? STILL THE FURTHEST TO THE RIGHT, BY A SLIGHTLY LESS WIDE MARGIN. Again, if you disagree, point to the nation that would be to our right.
So, it is clear that Obamacare is actually a RIGHT WING policy, not center-right and certainly not leftist in any form.
Q.E.D.
Wow, all the rights and lefts here. The fact that the right-left political spectrum presently has no meaning still escapes you.
As I expected, you have no actual response to my post. We are, by definition, "right wing" if we are to the right of everyone (by a lot, actually).
Actually, our health care is to the left of every other nations except Socialist Europe's and the former Soviet Union. So, you are wrong Chad, as usual.
Note I said "industrialized", by which one would take to refer to the OECD countries. Which one is to the right of us? I think the nearest to us is probably Switzerland, but they are still well to the left of Obamacare.
Far left, to me, would be government-run single payer healthcare. Nothing proposed even comes close, and the bill at hand is far, far from this.
Far left would be nationalizing the banks. What we've done is just give them a trillion dollars with hardly strings attached.
Far left would be giving terrorists full constitutional protections followed by a nicely appointed rehabilitation cell. Obama's policies are just a tad less radically right than Bush's on this count.
Understand one central fact: Republicans don't care about policy at this point. They care about destroying Obama and getting power back. If Obama were to propose establishing the National Church of Reagan, the GOP would still call it a communist plot, and morons who watch too much FOX news would go along with it. His policies are not anywhere close to being far left, and even if he wanted them to be Congress wouldn't let it happen.
Yes Tony, I think you have cracked the code! Obama is really a far right Nazi. As a matter of fact, all governments in the world are far right, so what have we to complain about?
Tony, babe, seriously.....WOW
I hope you are just kidding, if not, please stay of the Media Matters and Huffington Post sites. You are obviosly losing all sense of reality.
Could be chemical though...just sayin'
I saw a show on CNN about how many promises he's kept vs. broken. Among the kept promises were getting a dog for the white house. So far he's accomplished only negative things. His open hand hasn't impressed our enemies. Copenhagen treats him like a dog. Criminal courts for terrorists now looks like a loser, as does obamacare. He's had $4T and a year to work on jobs, and unemployment has gone up. He's even destroying his own party. He's done nothing to unify America or the Ds and Rs, preferring to galavant around the world pontificating. He's creating a war chest, looking for more stimulus money while he's sitting on over $500B. As slow as W. was at times, at least he spoke to us without a tele-prompter. I have to stop before I get upset.
This is best you got against Obama? How does that compare to Republican dishonesty? Oh, where do I begin?
How about the fact that no Republican even remotely will state the type of cuts we would need in order to balance the budget without tax increases. Something like "Raising the retirement age to 72, cutting a third of the military budget, and withdrawing the Medicaid insurance from five million poor people, for starters" should be a common statement for Republicans. Yet they yell just the opposite (Get your gub'ment hands of my Medicare! Death panels! SOCIALISM!!!!!) and do nothing to solve the problem except call for more tax cuts, which, uh, makes the deficit worse.
I am not quite sure how much more dishonest they could possibly be.
Yesterday, DailyKos posted the results from the annual poll it sponsers that surveys registered Republicans. It was fascinating to read, as it essentially confirmed that about 2/3 of Republicans are in the "tinfoil-hat wearing, black-helicopter fearing, birthing, tea-bagging, bat-shit insane creationist" camp. This confirms what we have all seen lately - that the Republican party has been overtaken by nut-cases. The remaining sane third of the party has to bow to the crackpots. Even the libertarian wing is grovelling before them.
How sad.
Don't be sad.
Your source is DailyKos. 'Nuff said.
My gosh Chad, you read the DailyKos! Who would have guessed that you read this Soros sponsored piece of shit? You are really sad. Go to another site, please. Your rants are too juvenile.
daily kos actually got 3 republicans to respond ?? impressive!!
The poll was conducted by a non-partisan independant research group.
http://www.dailykos.com/statepoll/2010/1/31/US/437
How does it feel to be lying in bed with TWO crazy bed-fellows (or just one, if you are one of the crazy ones)?
' Chad The poll was conducted by a non-partisan independant research group."
From the DailyKos? Bawahahahahaha!
Ahh, watch the libertarians reject data they don't like. It's becoming a trend!
I know it is hard to admit that most of your bedfellows are demonstratably crackpots. Would you like a hug?
You're sad but, yet, you want to give hugs?
You must really care.
It's enlightening that you quickly lump conservatives/Republicans into the group of "tin-foil hat-wearing, crackpots, teabaggers, etc.", but you don't see far left progressives in the Democratic party as "crackpots". Says an awful lot about your perspective.
Well, progressives in this country are more whacko than any conservative I've ever spoken to AND the rest of this country does not want to go where progressives want to take us....period!
Well Denise, your statement tells an awful lot about your judgment.
It took about a month. Just one month for you wackjobs to start laying into Obama. He hadn't even done anything yet.
So...you made things up. He wasn't born in this country. He's a terrorist. He's racist. Etc etc etc
Then, when he first mentioned that he felt all Americans had the right to health care, you lost your damned minds. Big government, socialist, etc etc etc.
Here's the deal Republicans: You had your shot. You had 4 years of Bush Jr, and he dropped the ball. In 2005, the consensus was "well, he made the mess, we should probably let him clean it up."
And he didn't.
Obama has only been in office one year and I'm already sick and tired of your pathetic, ignorant, teabagging, most of the time completely made up complaints.
You're right. The democrats have our crazies too. You have Glen Beck and we have, who, you'd probably say Olberman?
Sure, but ol' Keith isn't crying on the air. And if he was, we wouldn't believe it was real. As pissed as we were about Bush Jr we didn't try to start our own party. We didn't bring guns to presidential speeches. We didn't use racial slurs on misspelled signs. We don't make crazy allegations and truly believe them over time.
So, we're down to this: Bush screwed up SO bad. And he was criticized. The Republicans tried to stand up for him. But he kept screwing up. Finally, his mess hit your wallets. And then you had to admit to yourselves what a mess he made.
And that made you angry. And you needed someone to be angry at. You were so angry, that from day 1 you jumped on Obama's back with all kinds of, literally, insane allegations. And you flocked to those on TV who told you they agreed with you. They would create a ralley, you would follow, and they would report on that ralley, showing how ridiculous you'd become.
And all along the Republican congressmen are sitting on their hands, trying to block any new policy out of spite.
You've lost all credibility.
That's how the new generation feels. And you can bet as soon as the baby boomers start biting the dust, so will any respect for the party that thinks only for itself.
Hmm...I must have hit a nerve!
I am not a Repuglican, nor am I a teabagger. I am an Independent. Independent enough to know that no one man (Bush), or no one Party (Repuplicans) is responsible for the fiscal mess we are now in. Until you can admit that both parties are responsible for it, your rantings fall on deaf ears. It's time for the blame to stop and for all Americans to work together to find solutions.
And, by the way, I am the mother of four grown sons, ya know....the new generation. Thank God, they weren't raised the way you obviously were. And if you haven't figured it out yet, there's boomers on your side that will start "biting the dust" too.....
I never said one side was to blame for the mess more than the other. You said "Oh well you don't see the democrats for 'crackpots'"
Well no, I don't see that. Why?
- Because the democrats not marching in the streets with signs filled with mispelled racial slurs.
- The democrats are not telling people to NOT help the people in Haiti.
- The democrats aren't going on television having their little kids say on the air "Don't kill my grandma"
- The democrats are hanging dummies that look like the president from their trees
So yeah, I know there are nutcases on each side. I just think if you tallied it up over the past year, it's pretty much lopsided.
I'll give you that...it may be lop-sided this year in your view. However, during the last 2 years of the Bush administration, there were signs calling Bush "Hitler", a nazi, etc, as well. There were the Code Pink group and their cohorts showing up at soldiers funerals, calling them murderers....any idea how those families felt?
So please, don't tell me about the crackpots on one side being worse than the other side. Their are groups of radicals on both sides. The vast majority of Americans are in neither of these categories and we are the ones that need to change things.
There are nuts coming out of the woodwork on all sides.
http://www.zombietime.com/zomblog/?p=621
Plenty of nuts comparing Bush to Hitler and wanting him dead, burning effigies of him, hanging effigies of him, etc. A whole movie was made about assassinating Bush. The head of the current Secret Service denies that there are more threats against this (Pres. Obama) president than others.
There were shops in which a good part of the merchandise was inspired by Bush hatred (I was in one in Madison, WI).
People like to go where people like to go. Nuts love to go where people like to go. So, no matter your affiliation or reason for gathering, nuts will show up.

What do you know, Tater Salad. A conservative posting about Socialism and here you are posting racist jokes: http://messages.yahoo.com/Reli.....&frt=2
Well, all presidents break promises. Clinton had a funny term for broken promises. He refered to them as 'recommendations' he made during the campaign. So what?
In the long run what will matter is if some things get dealt with during his presidency - namely healthcare and spending on medicare and social security. The wars will be forgotten and in the big picture, they don't really cost that much anyway.
And notwithstanding the current hysteria about losing a senate seat, it's not over yet. There are three more years of his presidency, and lots can happen during three years.
People focus way too much on Obama's personality, his intentions. Our partisan instincts make us demonise or worship him. It's wierd. People should realise that he's just a guy and he's not a dictator.
I do not think people are being fair with Obama he does not break every promise! He said in his Book (Dreams of my Father that when push comes to shove he stands with the Muslims I think by his actions he is keeping that promise!
I love Barrack, he's neat because he's not white or black, that's sooo cool! His policies? I dunno? He's cool and good looking.....that should be enough..........shouldn't it?

and he talks nice too!

We can analyze this all we want, but in the end, I would rather have a president who fails to realize promises (as ideals) than one who lies the country into war.
I'm a socially progressive, fiscal conservative. I appreciate volunteerism and do as much as I can without the factor of money, scraping by. But, I don't care how you live your life, as long as you're following the [important] rules.
Otherwise, this article has made me think about the disunity that pervades this country. Pink Floyd's "Hey You" plays in my head. While I find the fingerpointing amusing to a degree, the question that more of us should be asking is what can we do, while not resigning to defeat when we cannot immediately arrive at an answer. There is no player's guide to life.
There's a strange kind of class warfare going on the US. It's not outright clear (hidden behind a wall of propaganda), but there seems to be two major classes. The government and the people. Which is odd in a way (caused primarily by our public school system, I think). Since our country is [supposed to be] governed of and by the people, I feel like each of us should have a sense of responsibility or ownership in the direction our country is headed. I suppose many do, but ideologies may be getting in the way.
But, is it really that hard to view the world from the perspective of the constitution? We should not be debating politically whether the ideals of a religious perspective should be legislated. There should be no concern over how a politician interprets the bible. We should, however, be very concerned with how they interpret the constitution.
I mean, come on people, it's called liberation. Why does anyone have any interest in preventing the liberation of another? It just doesn't make sense to me. If people want to be lazy and they can get by, why complain about it? You could be lazy, too, if you want. Just be yourself without concern for how others are as long as they aren't hurting you.
It is not the republicans, the democrats, the president or the vice president (current or past), the reds, green, blues or oranges fault. Not mine or yours, but a combination of all of them.
If you are over 18 years of age and a citizen of the USA, then you are responsible. It is your responsibility to fight for the freedom of your fellow man. And that isn't limited to American's. Every being deserves the rights to pursue peace and happiness.
I supported McCain in 2000. I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially liberal.
If you're going to evaluate somebody, please try to be objective.
Fact: Bush's budgets never included the cost of the Iraq/Afghan wars. He would always ask for supplemental funding, as if the wars somehow just appeared out of thin air every year. The Iraq war alone accounted for an extra $1TRILLION in spending. Where were the Republicans when Bush was peeing money away like a horse? Bush increased the size of the federal government, after Clinton's tenure which had brought it down (slightly). And yet Democrats are the party of "big government" ?
A big reason why Obama's budget has a higher deficit is because he budgeting for the wars your daddy Bush started.
We have "only" ourselves to blame for this mess:
This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone has it all figured out. It's sad that most of the people of the US don't.
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.
The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.
The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

GREAT STORY THAT HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD!!
I thought all you retired and current military friends might find this interesting. I got this below from my friend who is a Air Force Colonel at MacDill it is a good email?. It is apparently going around the bases currently. Guess it shows the vast difference in what defines a true President and Commander in Chief, eh?
Bush Asked to Leave Ft.Hood
I sent my cousin in Fayetteville, N.C. (retired from Special Forces) that picture of Geo. W. visiting the wounded at Ft. Hood . I got this reply:
What is even better is the fact George W. Bush heard about Fort Hood, got in his car without any escort, apparently they did not have time to react, and drove to Fort Hood. He was stopped at the gate and the guard could not believe who he had just stopped. Bush only ask for directions to the hospital then drove on. The gate guard called that "The president Is on Fort Hood and driving to the hospital." The base went bananas looking for Obama. When they found it was Bush they immediately offered escort and Bush simply told them to shut up and let him visit the wounded and the dependents of the dead. He stayed at Fort Hood for over six hours and was finally asked to leave by a message from the White House. Obama flew in days later and held a "photo " session in a gym and did not even go to the hospital. All this I picked up from two soldiers here who happened to be at Fort Hood when it happened.
Class shows up...
The doctor had his tie on in his office when the news of the military base shootings came on. The husband of one of his employees was stationed there. He called her into his office and as he told her what had happened, she got a text message from her husband saying, "I am okay." Her cell phone rang right after she read the message. It was an ER nurse,"I'm the one who just sent you a text, not your husband. I thought it would be comforting but I was mistaken in doing so. I am sorry to tell you this, but your husband has been shot 4 times and he is in surgery."
The soldier's wife left Southern Clinic in Dothan and drove all night to Ft.Hood. When she arrived, she found out her husband was out of surgery and would be OK. She rushed to his room and found that he already had visitors there to confort him. He was just waking up and found his wife and the visitors by his side The nurse took this picture.
What? No news crews and cameras? This is how people with class respond and pay respect to those in uniform
