Michael Steele's Medicare Mistake
More
and more, I find myself wondering if Michael Steele's tenure at the RNC is actually a rather involved ploy to combat the perception that Republicans are manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political masterminds. It's tough to explain this level of ineptitude any other way. From Politico:
GOP leaders, in a private meeting last month, delivered a blunt and at times heated message to RNC Chairman Michael Steele: quit meddling in policy.
The plea was made during what was supposed to be a routine discussion about polling matters and other priorities in House Minority Leader John Boehner's office. But the session devolved into a heated discussion about the roles of congressional leadership and Steele, according to multiple people familiar with the meeting.
The congressional leaders were particularly miffed that Steele had in late August unveiled a seniors' "health care bill of rights" without consulting with them. The statement of health care principles, outlined in a Washington Post op-ed, began with a robust defense of Medicare that puzzled some in a party not known for its attachment to entitlements.
So the chairman of the RNC ran a major, message-framing op-ed with significant policy implications in the Washington Post and didn't bother to tell party leadership in advance? Classy. Very classy. And this comes after the health-care conference in which, pressed for details, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't do policy." Now we know why!
Granted, it's somewhat hard to believe that Republican leadership really didn't know Steele's Medicare campaign was coming. This could simply be a well-placed leak designed by GOP leadership to distance themselves from the RNC's gravy-brained defense of Medicare. But the fact that this got out suggests that Republicans in Congress are growing increasingly tired of Steele's clueless, pandering shtick -- and are ready for Steele to back off so they can safely engage in a clueless, pandering shtick of their own design.

Could the GOP really be Whigging out? Awesome!
Sooo racist, dude
Racists!
Having an article about a black man whose URL ends in "mista" is racist.
Umm... why use the race card? Look at the title of the piece:
Michael Steele's Medicare Mista(ke)
It's the way the site is set up and it just cut's off when it gets to a specific character count.
I'm fairly confident that was a joke.
"the perception that Republicans are manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political masterminds."
The first thin I do every morning is thank the universe for not putting Suderman's brain in my head.
Maybe if somebody had, you would recognize sarcasm.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is exhibit 1 as to why discriminating according to race or ethnicity tends to hurt the discriminator; you don't get the best man for the job, but rather the top man with a particular ethnicity.
The "top man"... or not
only when republicans promote "their" minorities do we see the obvious truth of white supremacy. for example, sotomayor vs. thomas. it is in the republican's ideological interests to promote unqualified minorities, hence thomas. this allows them to say, see, minorities are all unqualified. I mean, honestly, wouldn't j. c. watts have been an admirable chairman? not really, because he would have been black & competent, upending the fundamental beliefs of the base.
"The congressional leaders were particularly miffed that Steele had in late August unveiled a seniors' "health care bill of rights" without consulting with them."
Uppity bastard!
Sounds like he is down for the struggle on idiocy.
you don't get the best man for the job, but rather the top man with a particular ethnicity.
It's only racist if that particular ethnicity is white, racist.
I'd be more torqued at Steele if I had any faith that Boehner would come up with something better, but I don't. Boehner is one of those Republicans Malcolm Wallop was thinking of when he said if Democrats proposed burning down the Capitol building, the Republicans would counter with a plan to phase it in over three years.
I fired the first shot in the generation wars by going off on the in-laws last night. Thier lame excuse for abiding the looming medicare disaster is they vote Republican. That apparently isn't good enough. The aging voting block must be countered by a united, multi-generational movement.
You are absolutely right. What we need is more battle and conflict. Trying to understand all the different needs of everyone is just too hard and confusing. More fighting and less understanding, I say!
I feel bad for Republicans... They can't take a principled stand here without losing Florida forever.
I mean, how can you say on one hand that government health care is bad, but on the other say medicare and medicaid are good. At least the Democrats are consistent - WRONG, but consistent.
I loved Michael Steele in An Officer and a Gentleman.
to combat the perception that Republicans are manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political masterminds
I went to the Texas GOP convention in 2004 as a delegate (long story). The Texas GOP is one of the best organized and best funded state parties, if not the best. Those buffoons couldn't conspire their way out of a paper bag. Anybody that thinks the RNC is capable of any kind of competent conspiracy has never spent much time around party politics.
In every class, there's always one joker who thinks that he's smarter than me. In this class, that happens to be you. Isn't it, Liberace?
Nice. Where is Lou these days, anyway? I always liked him.
Last time I saw him, he was croppin on shares and playin his fiddle.
the perception that Republicans are manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political masterminds
Nah. It's much simpler than that. Republicans are a party without a coherent, consistent politico-economic philosophy. What principles they do have are grounded in a fuzzy, Americanized religious dogma. They believe man's rights are gifts from an imaginary god, and that Americans are His chosen people. Republicans are unfit to defend capitalism because they have never properly identified its moral foundation.
Actually Republicans just say things in order to get the religious crowd's support; they really don't mean any of it. They're godless and principle-less and are grasping at anything that at least appears coherent.
They have no dogma, they have no platform. They wager war on those who do not conform to their morality, be it foreign or domestic individuals. They complain that elections have become nothing more than "popularity contests", then shun third parties because they "have no chance" due to a lack of popularity.
They see the Democrats get a (black) president, so they nominate a girl for vice president. When that doesn't work they do a "me too" and get a black guy for party chairman. Then when that same chairman starts to stray, they pretend to be outraged when all the while they have nothing better to offer.
They nominated a woman for vice president you fucking dipshit. The rest was spot on though.
In the minds of the GOP, she's a girl.
Palin is a little girl. It's an insult to Boxer, Feinstein, Hutchinson, H. Clinton, etc. to pretend otherwise.
And...Steele looks like a Muppet.
~ OUR U.S.CONGRESS AT LEAST DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE ~ THEY AFFORD POORER AMERICANS THE SAME EMERGENCY ONLY HEALTH*CARE THAT ILLEGAL ALIENS RECEIVE ~
AMERICA~LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT~ 45,000 DEAD POOR AMERICANS LEAVE U.S. EVERY*YEAR DUE TO 3rd WORLD HEALTH CONDITIONS ??
** POLITICS IN AMERICA IS VERY SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND WHEN OUR MIDDLE~CLASS & WORKING POOR CITIZENS ARE ALL BEING FORCED 2 ALLOW BIG $$$ TO CONTROL THE PEOPLES HALLS OF THE U.S.CONGRESS..

(6 months) AFTER NEXT U.S.PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION = $$$$$$$$$.........
WEALTH~CARE FOR ALL THE HEAVILY INVESTED INTERNATIONAL AND AMERICAN BILLIONAIRES IN THE CURRENT U.S.HEALTH FOR THE WEALTHY ONLY SYSTEM WILL NOT END ANYTIME SOON... IT WILL ONLY BE RE~ARRANGED TO MAKE SURE ALL THESE MEGA CAPITALISTS PROSPER IN JUST ANOTHER FASHION .
THE FINE ART OF DENYING 45 MILLION AMERICANS HEALTH~CARE IN OUR JUDEO~CHRISTIAN NATION IS NOT RACIST AT ALL... IT'S JUST OUR BEHIND THE SCENE WEALTHY ELITE CITIZENS USING THEIR TREMENDOUS WEALTH TO DIRECTLY INFLUENCE OUR U.S. CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES IN KEEPING ALL THE little poor folk down *
AMERICAN RELIGIOUS LEADERS ALL ACROSS THE USA HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO COUNT ON THEIR RELIGIOUS FLOCK TO CONTRIBUTE(TITHE)THEIR HARD EARNED MONIES TO THEIR MINISTRIES EVERY WEEK. THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS ATTENDING RELIGIOUS SERVICES IN THE U.S. ARE MIDDLE~CLASS AND WORKING POOR CITIZENS WHO NOW DESPERATELY NEED THE HELP AND SUPPORT FROM THESE SAME U.S.RELIGIOUS LEADERS IN LOBBYING THE U.S.CONGRESS TO PROVIDE PROPER HEALTH~CARE FOR ALL POORER AMERICANS.

LAWYERS FOR POOR AMERICANS

Caps Lock: Cruise control for rational and concise policy advocacy.
The first thing we do, let's kill all the the Lawyers For Poor Americans.
Then the rest of the lawyers, then the rest of the poor, until only certified upwardly-mobile Americans remain. Then let's kill them too, just to have something to be outraged about.
When I was a Republican leaning libertarian sort,* I gave a crap about the GOP palace intrigue.
I no longer give a shit.
* Voted for some of them** every election till the last.
** Occasional Dems too. Till the last.

RACIST!!!!11!!!one
"perception that Republicans are manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political masterminds."
Seriously Peter, who believes that?
You mean..you forgot how, back in 2000, those manipulative, evil, rigorously planned, hyper-disciplined political mastermind Republicans somehow convinced a Democrat County Superintendent of Elections in Florida to use a "butterfly ballot" that caused voters who meant to vote for Al Gore to vote for Pat Buchanon by mistake?
"Democrat County Superintendent of Elections"
That's "Democratic County Superintendent". The uppercase "D" makes it clear you're referring to the political party rather than the form of government. "Democrat" is a noun -- not an adjective. Try to get it right next time, mkay?
This solidifies my belief that Republicans are the party of old people. How could they vigorously support medicare? It's like they're pulling a reverse Labour in the UK trick and shifting to the left along with the dems, leaving nothing in their wake. In twenty years someone will need to fill the void left by the republican party after our seniors die off. I suppose we can fill that void.
I believe that Steele is secretly under the control of Sarah Palin to make her look good in contrast to the floundering that seems to be the way of the National Republican Party these days.
Surely all that time up in Alaska dealing with king crabs makes you understand a thing or two about long tentacles.
Every day, I thank God that this nincompoop is not my senator.
