Van Jones' Nuttiest Belief
Yesterday Michael Moynihan noted that Van Jones, the Obama administration's "green jobs czar," signed a 2004 petition that demanded an investigation into whether "people within the current administration may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war." After that story broke, Fox News reports, Jones insisted, "I do not agree with this statement, and it certainly does not reflect my views now or ever." An aide explained that Jones "did not carefully review the language in the petition." Jones also apologized for calling Republicans "assholes" during a question-and-answer session last February. According to Fox, "He said those remarks 'do not reflect the views of this administration' and its bipartisan aims." (To his credit, Jones did not actually deny that Republicans are assholes.) The story also plays up an essay that Jones, at the time a Yale Law School student, wrote shortly after the 1992 Rodney King riots. Contrary to Fox's implication, the essay does not exactly celebrate the riots. To the contrary, Jones wrote that "Los Angeles' great self-immolation, and its mini-versions elsewhere, give us nothing to cheer about" because "those of us on the streets"—where Jones said he "just marched around and chanted slogans"—"had rattled the bucket of radical ideas and were shocked to find it empty."
More troubling than any of this, because it is potentially far more consequential, is Jones' belief, expressed in his book The Green Collar Economy, that dramatically reducing carbon dioxide emissions not only won't cost anything but will actually benefit the economy by creating jobs. I debated this subject with Jones on a radio show last year, and my impression was that he is a true believer in the broken planet fallacy. The problem is that Jones was hired not despite but because of this nutty idea, which his boss also espouses.

People sign all sorts of petitions that they don't read carefully, often just to get annoying petitioners to go away. I would agree that the green jobs craziness is much more worth worrying about.
Thank god he's not a teabagging hillbilly birther Republican.
A self-avowed communist appointed to create "jobs" is laughable on its face.
"People sign all sorts of petitions that they don't read carefully, often just to get annoying petitioners to go away."
On line???
I worked in One WTC on that day.
I don't believe that the government nor Bin Ladan had anything to do with it.
The Government:
The last this Bush needed was this. They had already won the election. And, they would have hung Hussein on YouTube.com no matter what.
Bin Laden:
He didn't do this. He would have never approved this attach unless he had uniform attacks ready. If u ask me, America was pretty lienent on these people.
Atta and his crew did this. Unfortunately for the Hawks and Crazies of America...the real Perps of 9/11 are ALL DEAD. That's why people hate terrorist attack.
People sign all sorts of petitions that they don't read carefully, often just to get annoying petitioners to go away.
Maybe, but it's a really bad idea for anyone even considering a career in politics.
Who is that, the black Steve Jobs?
Today, using the sophisticated vetting tool the White House is apparently not privy to (Google), Gateway Pundit turned up yet another link between Jones and the 9/11 Truther movement. Jones is listed as an organizer for a San Francisco Truther march in 2002.
http://www.rense.com/general18/march.htm
If you were part of the Truther movement in 2002, does that not make you one of its Founding Fathers? In the announcement of this march, which Jones probably didn't read carefully, the movement lays out some of its questions:

Spartacus-
As bad an idea as a Roman slave leading an uprising?
He reminds me of the homeless crazy people in DC.
When is Obama The Tard going to appoint them to his administration?
I'm going to start hiding my money in truther petitions.
AW SHIZZ
Please, please... no one post a picture of the black Steve Ballmer
If it is worthwhile looking into allegations of War Crimes perpetrated by the Bush Administration, then why not go all the way and see if either their negligence or active participation caused or exacerbated the events of 9/11? Isn't at least in the realm of reasonableness that an administration that would commit atrocities to others in our name AND LIE TO US ABOUT THEM would have no problem sacrificing a few of us for the greater good of all of us? That poisonous, persistent doubt must be dispelled in a credible way, or confirmed and faced with sense and strength.
I don't care whether a credible accounting exonerates Bush and pals or secures the hard evidence to earn them invitations to a national necktie party. Either conclusion works for me, as long as it holds water. My problem is that, for the seriousness of what happened that day, not to mention the seriousness of the continuing reverberations, we have not had a credible accounting. Maybe no such thing is possible; maybe we must simply accept disappointment and ignorance of the real facts, whatever they may be. But to not even try sincerely to get our hands on authoritative information (and if the 9/11 commission's report is the best we can do, we're in trouble), is unacceptable to me.
What is puzzling to me is that so much appears to be invested in making people who ask questions and demand answers look like nut-jobs. It is "in" to mock anyone who wants to see the publication of deeper answers concerning 9/11. The stifling and marginalization of mere INQUIRY about some of the most significant events and actors of our time is baffling to me. What does the average American have to gain from refusing to ask the hard questions or demand the best answers we can find? Conversely, who in positions of power stand to gain from us not looking too closely at the events surrounding 9/11?
Like many people, I want to be done with the whole controversy. But I don't want to be done with it by sweeping it under the rug and letting any cockroaches scurry away under cover of darkness. The world didn't change on 9/11. It was always the dangerous place -- especially for interventionists -- that the events of 9/11 proved it to be. Our inner world, however -- our outlook and our attitude -- changed immensely, and not necessarily for the better. Out of respect for that transformation, and perhaps as a means of mitigating its worst aspects, we need valid closure. To mock people for wanting this -- for signing their names to a petition that demands this -- seems bafflingly counter-productive to me.
But... VAN JONES IS A TRUTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND????? Those who want to know about links between Bush/BinLaden/CarlyleGroup ARE TINFOILHAT WEARING LOONIES!!!!!!
I know, because the people I trust - Reason, Weigel, Insty, the Dems, the GOP, and the BeltwayEstablishment all told me so. They wouldn't lie!!!!!!!!!
P.S. If the GOP were competent, they'd simply focus on these and try to make him a long-running liability:
1. He is/was a Communist.
2. He's apparently made a whole series of race-related comments.
3. Other things, like those mentioned in this post.
...he is a true believer in the broken planet fallacy.
Oh that is gooey and sweet. First time I've seen it. Do we know who coined it?

"If it is worthwhile looking into allegations of War Crimes perpetrated by the Bush Administration, then why not go all the way and see if either their negligence or active participation caused or exacerbated the events of 9/11?"
There is a book called the 9-11 Commission Report you might want to pick up sometime, you fucking moron. We investigated 9-11 to death.
24aHead, you and Van are 2 peas in a pod. It's nothing to be ashamed of. He's a very successful guy.
Seriously, Mr. Merritt, you do go on about "real facts" and "deeper answers", and, forgive me if I am skeptical of you, but somehow I sense that is because you have a conclusion in mind.
at some point, shit just needs to be considered settled. There were open, all-kinds-of-sunlight-having hearings that generated the Congressional Report John mentioned above. Popular Mechanics debunked most of the crazy, unscientific assertions of the loony-tunes on the left and right. "Loose Change" was nothing more than scary music, ominous voiceovers and public footage.
Move. The. Fuck. On.
MNG made a point on another thread about the Republicans being anti-intellectual. Here is the problem. Here we have a guy with a Yale Law degree and who at least on paper is an "intellectual". Yet, his views range from ignorant to batshit crazy. The truth is I would trust the guy who cuts my lawn in a position of power over this asshole, Yale law degree and all. How does one express this fact without sounding anti-intellectual?
The racial ties and comments he makes are pretty high on the disturbing shit about Van chart.
fuck did I just agree with whacko?
Liberals just think everyone that disagrees with them is anti-intellectual. That's why they are here to take care of everyone and explain things to the stupid majority.
Right?
two Van articles.
You guys are starting to look like Beck. Who is going to do the crying and who gets to dance in lederhosen.
According to Chris Kelly, here are the others who signed the same petition that Van Jones did:
Wow, that's some august company there. I wonder why the Truther movement lacks for credibility. What a total fucking mystery.
hmmm,
I gotta say, for all the Glenn Beck hate that has been going on, reason sure is following along recently, are they not?
I only watch him maybe once or twice a week. But I was agreeing with your sentiment, just being sarcastic about it. Reason at least waited till the MSM picked up on the stories. I'm not sure but I think I saw Beck's wacky ass talking about it a few weeks ago or longer?

I'd put my intellect up against yours any time, jackass. If I am a "fucking moron," at least I get laid. You sound like a moron who doesn't even get that. Which probably explains your choice of master-debating recreation in these threads.
I have the book, and have read more than enough of it to not be convinced at all that they have even asked the right questions, much less come up with the right answers.
STFUJ
James Anderson Merritt,
There's nothing I despise more than people who jump into the middle of other people's conversations.
You see what I did there?
If I am a "fucking moron," at least I get laid.....master-debating recreation
C'mon, really? That's a lot of bad setup for a punback.
Oh, whoops, I thought you were quoting something else. Because I thought I'd heard that before.
See, James, this is my issue. What the hell is it going to take to satisfy the so-called "9/11 Skeptics"? You guys take skepticism and turn it up to George Nory-level.
I'll match my wicked CS skills and tree climbing skills against anyone here. I'm also pretty good at badminton and Mario Cart.
Bring it biatches!!!
Who is that, the black Steve Jobs?
Steve Greenjobs.
hmm - I do not own a television, but I listen to Beck on the radio on my way in to school and work in the morning. Probably why I have a better outlook on him than most, because his radio show is hilarious and not all teary-eyed and crazy like the television show (as described by others) apparently is.
"I have the book, and have read more than enough of it to not be convinced at all that they have even asked the right questions, much less come up with the right answers."
I have read it to. If you read the book and think that, you are fucking moron. I am sorry but sometimes the facts speak for themselves. Or if you are not a moron you are conspiracy theorist whackjob. At some point, the issue needs to be settled and people need to move on. No, Bush didn't know 9-11 was going to happen. No, the Government wasn't responsible for it Bin Ladin was. Yes, the attackers were able to enter the country and conduct the attack due to luck and a long list of government failures and incompetence and bureaucratic warfare between the FBI, INS, and the Intel Community. That is really all there is to it.
In the brown shirt.
*cheap*
I have never watched Beck's show. But he seems funny in the other interviews I have seen. And he sure pegged this guy.
Don't get me wrong I agree with a lot of his comments. I just feel compelled to make fun of his showmanship.
Oh, fuck, I just realized he's wearing a turtleneck. A turtleneck.
That looks like a mock turtleneck sir.
Speaking of turtle. I give you turtled puppy, for egregious and unsolicited cuteness.
And round glasses Art. Don't forget the round glasses. The sad fact is that this guy is probably a smart guy. But he had the misfortune of growing up in an environment where spouting leftist dogma was considered to be smart thinking.
The truth is I would trust the guy who cuts my lawn in a position of power over this asshole, Yale law degree and all.
Racist!
Does turtleneck still denote Serious Intellectual? What about elbow patches on tweed jackets? A pipe? Or maybe a Nehru jacket...
He's a good looking man. I hate when handsome men turn out to be fucking lunatics. It's depressing.
# The Angry Optimist | September 4, 2009, 4:27pm | #
# Seriously, Mr. Merritt, you do go on about
# "real facts" and "deeper answers", and,
# forgive me if I am skeptical of you, but
# somehow I sense that is because you have a
# conclusion in mind.
Not at all. But I do fully expect that a deeper and more sincere investigation of this matter will reveal quite a bit about what was going on in our government that we ought to know. If that leads, as I said, to exoneration of Bush and pals with regard to 9-11 blame, fine by me. But it will lead somewhere. Remember that the criminal investigation of a simple burglary led to the fall of an administration and one of the several events of recent years that was labeled "our loss of innocence."
# at some point, shit just needs to be
# considered settled.
Yeah, we said that about the Iraq war, too. Still going on, with no end in sight. So who decides what gets settled, since obviously the policy is not uniformly applied. A "deep-cleaning" 9-11 investigation, of the kind that the 9-11 Commission's was NOT, would cost a lot less and certainly result in fewer deaths than that other pointless exercise.
# all-kinds-of-sunlight-having hearings that
# generated the Congressional Report John
# mentioned above.
I saw some of them -- it was impossible to follow them all -- and the struck me as a lot of hot air of the type we have seen many times before, and I say that after having studied or viewed via TV and archival footage of the McCarthy hearings, the Kennedy Assassination hearings, the Watergate Hearings, and any number of other inquiries once C-SPAN was available. I remain unconvinced. Congressional hearings are not my yardsticks for determination of truth. This is a criminal investigation. It needs to be pursued by real criminal investigators wherever and as far as the facts lead. It is a high-profile mass-murder investigation, and needs to be pursued for as long as it takes to determine with precision those responsible and, to the extent possible, bring them to justice. Would you really tell the police to drop a 30 year old murder, rape, or kidnapping investigation just because "shit" needs to be "settled?" Would you have expected the Watergate break-in investigators to give up just because somebody advised them to shift priorities away from a fairly minor crime and let it be "settled"?
# Popular Mechanics debunked most of the
# crazy, unscientific assertions of the
# loony-tunes on the left and right.
In the sense of making a lot of the "Truther" arguments or their proponents look silly, and thus give people license to mock and dismiss ANYTHING that challenges the official story, yes, you are right. But I've looked at the P-M "debunking" website and cannot honestly say that the CONSTRUCTIVE evidence they offered was all that compelling. Many unanswered question remain open.
Also, just as an aside, go back through the issues of P-M over the years to see just how much they got wrong, and how "gee whiz" and sensationalistic their coverage has been. Not to say that they were wrong in this case, but I don't think their track record is all that good. Trusting P-M's take as the "voice of reason" on a matter this complex and important is like trusting the same politicians that got us into a particular mess to fix it. Both can hit the target, but past performance doesn't fill one with confidence (and in the case of the pols, should fill one with skepticism and dread).
# "Loose Change" was nothing more than scary
# music, ominous voiceovers and public footage.
Did I mention "Loose Change"? Why do you bring it up?
# Move. The. Fuck. On.
This belies your initial polite form of address to me and suggests that you, yourself have a pre-judged conclusion, which you hope the readership here shares so you can all enjoy the marginalization of the victim. It is ironic that my complaint, to which you respond with mocking and derision, is simply that so many people's responses to questions about the 9-11 "official story" are characterized by mocking and derision. Thanks for making my point. You'll pull in the choir with your tactics, but you probably won't convince anyone else by using them. On the other hand, if the marginalization tactics are successful, then the great mass of other people will pay less and less attention to what's behind the curtain, and eventually the matter will be dropped altogether as people become distracted by other life events and priorities. All will again be "normal." That'll be a great day for America, everybody.
Who is that, the black Steve Jobs?
Nah, he is the little known Van Wayans. He did occasional appearances on "In Living Color". I am pretty sure he was not born in the US.
"C'mon, really? That's a lot of bad setup for a punback." - Ska
If you want a lot of bad set-up for a fall-flat punchline, checkout the 9/11 Commission Report.
Really, people like TAO accuse ME of "going on..." to the point of excess. But in that pursuit I am a piker in comparison with those who compile and disgorge the reports of congressional investigations. They are the masters, there's no debatin' it.
Mr. Merritt - believe whatever you want. The fact is, is that you are result-oriented in this, and you consider any investigation that does comes up short of the results you want to be "incomplete" or "not deep enough".
You go do your own investigation. Most of us are satisfied and are not in the mood to waste more time, taxpayer dollars and any of the country's emotional energy entertaining your wild-eyed "skepticism".
Sorry.
For example:
We already had an investigation. You are not unlike the Birthers, you know.
"We already had an investigation. You are not unlike the Birthers, you know." -TAO
Oh, oh, more ad hominem attacks. I quake in fear. I think you already insinuated I was a "birther" in another thread, so this is old news. Again, you respond with marginalization. "Let's tease and mock anyone who goes against the grain." I'm glad you are satisfied with the results of the 9-11 inquiry. I hope it lets you sleep nights. But this is why I don't put much stock in your opinions. You are too easily satisfied, and too glib about the "answers" you have apparently accepted. Or if not, you make a good show of it. Sometimes, one must entertain the extreme, even outrageous possibilities. They are not always the truth themselves, but I have seen where entertaining them very frequently leads to important facts and revelations. Then again, sometimes not. But by foreclosing on various areas of inquiry prematurely, many potentially worthwhile questions aren't even asked, much less answered.
I might as well say that you are a lot like Holocaust Deniers, you know. But that wouldn't lead to a productive discussion. Just as your marginalization of me won't. I suspect having a productive discussion isn't your aim, though.
"We already had an investigation." - TAO
And bad or incomplete investigations get re-opened. My point was that there is no statute of limitations on murder or other heinous crimes. So trying to impose one by peer pressure and the tactics of marginalization is only a rather transparent crowd-control tactic, though I will admit it has the virtue of being more transparent than our govenment.
No, the Government wasn't responsible for it Bin Ladin was.
Of course Bin Laden was responsible for it. He admitted as much himself on one of his propaganda videos, much to the dismay and continued disbelief of much of the Arab and Muslim world.
Oh, fuck, I just realized he's wearing a turtleneck. A turtleneck.
I kind of like the uncircumcised sweater look.
Mr. Merritt - you keep saying "bad or incomplete". you've been asked more than once to say what it is, exactly, you feel needs to be re-opened and what the failings of the first investigation are. So far, you've merely said "I'm not satisfied. What REALLY Happened?"
It's OK. We all know that Elvis, the skunk ape, and Roswell aliens accidentally flew the planes into the buildings looking for the Loch Ness Monster.
Back to the alleged "vetting" of Mr. Jones, who specifically is in charge of the background checks? The producers of VH1 dating shows?
I'm sure that Jones was vetted thoroughly. I'm sure the Secret Service objected to him, and they were overruled. His past isn't well hidden, and it wasn't unknown to the Obama administration. They don't object to his nutty beliefs, and they probably share a number of them.
There's nothing mysterious about this. The administration didn't expect the media to dig into Jones' background, and the media didn't. If Van Jones hadn't formed Color of Change and gone after Glen Beck, we'd know nothing about Jones and the Truthers and Mumia and his whole "poor, repressed, Yale-educated, granted-funded lil old me" schtick.
He's right about the fact that black kids never pull a Columbine - I've wondered why that is.
I don't recall the Bush administration ever going after a media figure like this administration went after Beck. It was an extraordinarily clumsy and stupid thing to do - very Nixonian. I'm not a big fan of Beck, but I've enjoyed watching it blow up in their faces.
For the love of God!!!! Somebody help that poor puppy!
Your sartorial expertise genuinely impresses me.
You're right, going full turtleneck would've been absurd.
Mari Dupont,
word.
I have an email into my Senator and Rep. and state officials requesting a diversion of stimulus funds from the research of the migratory Pecker Tick to some research dealing with juvenile canine stabilization programs. With the help of local researchers funded by federal dollars procured by local, state, and federal government officials I hope to have a cure for inverted and turtled puppies by 2025. We project the cost to only be 9 billion dollars by 2020.
If you want a lot of bad set-up for a fall-flat punchline, checkout the 9/11 Commission Report.
I laughed.
"Black kids never pull a Columbine"? I think they are, but they are just doing it on an installment plan in the "hood".
Al Campanis was right...
Yes, the attackers were able to enter the country and conduct the attack due to luck and a long list of government failures and incompetence and bureaucratic warfare between the FBI, INS, and the Intel Community. That is really all there is to it.
There was also the factor of people having been told "just do what the bad man says and you'll survive" for several decades before the attacks.
-jcr
Of course Bin Laden was responsible for it. He admitted as much himself
I would say "bragged" more than "admitted". He sure wasn't shy about it.
-jcr
Stockholm Syndrome?
"People sign all sorts of petitions that they don't read carefully, often just to get annoying petitioners to go away."
Give me a huge fucking break. Yeah, Van Jones was just out at the mall and some fuck with a clipboard wouldn't leave him alone until he signed a petition stating George Bush deliberately murdered 3000 Americans on 9/11. Again, give me a huge fucking break. Anyone even remotely willing to accept Jones's explanation is either a)really gullible, b)really retarded, c)really gullible and really retarded, or d) a partisan hack, really gullible and really retarded.
"That poisonous, persistent doubt must be dispelled in a credible way, or confirmed and faced with sense and strength."
It has been dispelled you shitbag, with multiple commmissions, videos of al Qaeda hijackers, tapes put out by bin Laden, testimony by those involved with the planning etc, but like all retarded asshole conspiracy theorists, you absolutely fucking refuse to accept any evidence regardless of how overwhelming it is if it doesn't fit the answer you are looking for. So do us all a favor with your sham and put-on skepticism and fucking shoot yourself in the head.
Any movement that excepts the metallurgical expertise of Rosie O'Donnell is full of a bunch of turds that need to be permanently flushed.
The last sentence of the above post should read:
Any movement that accepts the metallurgical expertise of Rosie O'Donnell is full of a bunch of turds that need to be permanently flushed.
"Like many people, I want to be done with the whole controversy. But I don't want to be done with it by sweeping it under the rug and letting any cockroaches scurry away under cover of darkness"
It hasn't been swept under the rug you contemptible asshole. Again, the answers have already been found but you just fucking refuse to accept them.
Le fired.
No surprise that he's out, in spite of the overwhelming majority of the so-called "mainstream media" completely ignoring the story of what kind of guy he is.
For Obama to keep this psychopath on would have been political suicide. B.O. is an extreme leftist, but he isn't crazy or stupid, that's for certain.
Yup, resigned like a Detroit Lions coach.
Has anyone else accidentally googled Van Johnson when you were looking for news on Van Jones? One of those guys was really good in "The Caine Mutiny".
The circumcision truther vs. 9-11 skeptic...A cage match worth watching.
He's a LIAR.
Listen to his nauseating album and you'll learn his view on 9/11.
He was mainstream Democrat all the way.
Neu Mejican,
"circumcision truther"? Is that some sort of neologism? Wait, I think I know the thread you're talking about. The one where the CIA flew a giant foreskin into the WTC.
But in that pursuit I am a piker in comparison with those who compile and disgorge the reports of congressional investigations.
But aren't you demanding a congressional investigation to get to the bottom of this 9/11 mystery? I mean, who else would "look into allegations" about 9/11?
