This Disney bit from 1943 is obviously a day late, but too…something to pass up. Certainly more convincing than Joe Biden, though that's setting the bar pretty low.

ahh good honest Scotch Scrooge McDuck and evil depraved Pacheco Duck!

  2. Abdul   16 years ago

Reminds me of one of the most eloquent quotes about government policymaking:

"The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to get the most feathers with the least hissing." --Jean Baptiste Colbert

Although, only a Frenchman could consider taxation to be an "art."

  3. Joel   16 years ago

    Oh, man!

Boy, I'm sure glad we don't have to listen to government propaganda anymore. Who'd believe that shit?

    Oh...wait...

  4. NLE   16 years ago

I prefer the scrooge who got money by being smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies.

    /sigh

  5. Obama   16 years ago

Damn, I wish I could blame my tax increases on Hitler and Hirohito!

  6. mari dupont   16 years ago

Jeez, I like my guns as much as the next person, but that narrator sounds totally unhinged. But, I'd love to see a modern day version of this, with Scrooge Mc D rallying us to ditch our SUVs and throw all our money at Barry's glorious social projects.

  7. Roz   16 years ago

Don't you mean to "Sock" the Axis? That fight I could stomach; one we could win--like the war in Iraq. Social programs, fought for decades, are those that we will never win because, without them, politicians would have nothing to do.

The creepiest part is that Walt was second to pretty much nobody in being a pro-market guy, a commie hater and a union buster. That even he could get behind an argument like this shows how perverted and all-consuming war really is.

  9. NeonCat   16 years ago

I believe part of the whole savings vs. spending issue was to reduce inflationary growth.

When did the current system develop where your taxes are deducted from your paycheck?

    FD fucking R. Shoulda known.

  12. Kraorh   16 years ago

Well, when you ride alone, you ride with Hitler. Would we retcon this whole cartoon as a Godwin violation?

  13. jtuf   16 years ago

Hmm, a few thoughts on this. First, I have no problem with my tax money going to fund the military, because running a military is a legitimate function of government. Second, the people Donald would hire when he spends his money would end up paying taxes on what he gives them. So, there's nothing unpatriotic about spending as long as you have enough to pay what ever taxes you owe. Finally, I'm a bit dishearted to think of how the Feds in the 40's spent money to fight marijuana when there was WWII to win.

"Certainly more convincing than Joe Biden, though that's setting the bar pretty low."

Regardless of how we feel about taxes, I think we can all agree Joe Biden is the most dimwitted VP ever.

  15. Coleman Mulkerin   16 years ago

Ahh the good old days when taxes were not automatically withheld. At least back then they could actually think about where their money was going when they signed their money over. Now tax day is "pay" day where you get your money "back".

  16. TallDave   16 years ago

    Priceless. A great find.

  17. Valhawk   16 years ago

Oh no, the cartoon is telling people to save. Shouldn't the Keynesian be going bonkers over that.

  18. Xmas   16 years ago

Oh sh*t, when did the Nazis get mecha???!?!

    (See 4:50)

  19. economist   16 years ago

Shouldn't it be taxes to fight the axis?

"But, I'd love to see a modern day version of this, with Scrooge Mc D rallying us to ditch our SUVs and throw all our money at Barry's glorious social projects."
Give it time, my friend. Give it time.

"Taxes for green energy. Taxes for welfare. Taxes for prosperity, for democracy..."*My country 'tis of thee playing in the background*
Do I think it will look exactly like this? No. But government propaganda to push whatever new program the government is implementing doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility at all.

Trivia: At 2:31, after Donald smashes the swastika saloon doors, the pieces form a V with a ...- , while the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony are played.

...- is Morse Code for V. Legend has it that Winston Churchill came up with the "V for Victory" hand sign while humming Beethoven's Fifth during a morning walk.

Now if I could just come up with a "Taxes of Evil" joke...
