The same day it was reported that the five families of the New York mafia came within a single vote of putting a hit out on Rudolph Giuliani in 1987, this item appeared in The New York Times:

Nothing arbitrary or irrational about it. The concept of rooting for your own league/conference is wide spread, but you never root for your arch-rival. The rule/choice of arch-rival may be arbitrary and irrational (although usually just arbitrary), but the anger is very rational. Rudy is violating a well understood rule.
