Radicals For Capitalism: A Home on the Web

While this does not mean that news and hype about my new book Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement, will not be seen here on Hit and Run as the occasion warrants, I did want to announce the launch of a new site dedicated entirely to news and hype about the book: RadicalsForCapitalism.com.Tell the family, blogroll to your heart's content.

As time goes on, I hope to make it a one-stop-shopping site not only for info about the book, but for links and info about the book's topic, the history of the modern American libertarian movement. In the meantime, it's the place to check early and often for reviews, radio and TV shows, personal appearances, and all else that goes into trying to sell a book in the free market.

It sounds like a great read. But just one quibble. Is "capitalist" being used here as a synonym for "libertarian"? My thinking is this, one could live on a kundalini yoga ashram and share everything collectively but still be a libertarian - if we simply define libertarian as one who doesn't want the government to intrude on one's civil or economic actions. For that matter, one could be an Amish, a Tibetan monk, or a mountain man surviving on the fish from the streams or the animals from the forest. One could live on barter and not on money at all with no contradiction to the basic definition of libertarian. Capitalist seems to be a narrower definition which would exclude some of the aforementioned groups.

The conspiracy has begun!

Moments ago I conducted an anonymous search of the new Olsen's store on Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA and Brian's book was nowhere to be found!

Both of Senator Obama's books were easily viewable from the windo, along with plenty of anti-market books all over the the store, but not a single copy of this fine work.

I believe that a strongly worded telegram is in order.

Guy -- Bookstore employees, like journalists and editors (of which I was one), are overwhelmingly lefties. I think it's because they tend to be relatively well educated (in the liberal arts) and therefore feel particularly cheated by the fact that they're making less than most blue-collar workers. After all, the world must be fugged up if someone with a 3.8 GPA in comparative lit can't find a job paying six figures.

The examples are a bit extreme but I do think there is sometimes confusion in the general public over these terms. There's an assumption "libertarian" is the no different from "entrepeneur", "businessman," or "capitalist." When I first became interested in libertarianism someone I know said something to me like, "it seems like you're in an entrepeneurial phase of your life," when in fact I had done nothing entrepeneurial at all. I hadn't even worked in business.

I did a search on barnes and nobles web site for "radicals for capitalism", and Brian's book came up 1st. The second book it matched to that phrase was the Communist Manifesto. Conspiracy indeed! Take some solace: the 4th book listed was "Road to Serfdom".
