Report: More Than 50 Countries Involved in CIA Torture Program
More than 50 countries have been implicated in kidnapping, detention, and torture as part of the CIA’s secret detention and extraordinary rendition programs, said the Open Society Justice Initiative today in a report that provides the most comprehensive documentation to date of the human rights abuses associated with the intelligence agency’s post-September 11, 2001, counterterror operations.
The report, “Globalizing Torture: CIA Secret Detention and Extraordinary Rendition,” identifies for the first time a total of 136 named victims and describes the complicity of 54 foreign governments in these operations. Extraordinary rendition refers to the transfer—without legal process—of a detainee to the custody of a foreign government for purposes of detention and interrogation.

The vast scope (50+ countries!) of the CIA secret detention and extraordinary rendition program shown in the report is truly shocking but what does it mean in the present? Aside from making statements disavowing future participation in such programs, we need other concrete measures to stop this from happening again:
1-the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence should release its confidential report see we can see officially just how far the program extends
2-We should thoroughly scrutinize public officials involved as they continue in other government positions (I'm looking at you John Brennan!)
3-the 54 countries named should conduct meaningful investigations to shed more light on their roles.
4-some sort of investigation, recognition, and reparations should be paid to the detainees who were wrongfully swept up in this mess.
Just to name a few!
