Is There Too Much Porn?
Join Reason on YouTube and Facebook at 1 p.m. Eastern this Thursday for a discussion with Aella about the escalating government crackdown on online porn, the sexual revolution, and sex work.
"We have made the difficult decision to block access to our site in Mississippi and Virginia, as we have also recently done in Utah," reads a June 30 statement from Pornhub, the world's second-most trafficked porn site and the thirteenth most trafficked site overall.
Pornhub was reacting to the passage of age-verification laws passed in those three states. Similar laws have passed in Louisiana, Texas, Montana, and Arkansas, leading Politico to declare that "A Simple Law is Doing the Impossible. It's Making the Porn Industry Retreat." The industry is fighting back, however, and won a preliminary injunction against Texas' law.
Join Reason's Zach Weissmueller and Liz Wolfe this Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern on Reason's YouTube channel or Facebook page as they discuss the anti-porn laws with sex worker and data scientist Aella. They'll also talk about the psychological literature examining online porn consumption, the privacy implications of age verification laws, and a recent debate Aella attended hosted by the Free Press and FIRE about the effects of "the sexual revolution" on American society.

Is there too much Porn
Well, when you start to grow hair on your palms, you're probably starting to reach "too much". When you go blind, you've passed it.
“That’s bullshit” - Harry Palm, three time US Open World Masturbation champion.

If humans had naturally hairy palms wouldn't using them too much cause bald palms?
How about if I only need glasses? Really thick glasses...

You "journalists" worked to ruin this man's life and enable evil women.
this. the suit against MLB should be delicious too.
This asshole?
If he'd been accused of being a trans kiddie rapist, Kirkland would be licking his sack right now.
The evidence that came out in that accusation is nuts.

How are administrators ok with this content in their school libraries??
I'll be in my bunk.
"How are administrators ok with this content in their school libraries??"
What kind of person do you imagine is attracted to this job?
The question answers itself - groomers.
Time to abolish the existing school system. It can't be fixed, because it is broken by design. Universal school vouchers (like credit cards). A system to enroll and verify every parent, student, teacher, and class offered by any teacher - no anonymous users. "School" can be anywhere. Let them experiment. Anyone can write a review of anyone - in their own name. Teachers may reject any student for any reason - including intractable parents. Cameras in every class which is neither home school or self-study. Money follows who teaches the child (trust funds for self-directed learning keeping their money safe until adulthood).
Real solutions are easy. Politics makes them hard.

Planned Parenthood is giving cross-sex hormones to teenagers—including those with special needs—after just a 30 minute consult.
Even the liberal pioneers of gender medicine are alarmed, saying PP has eroded vital guardrails on an irreversible treatment.

Eugenics for inferior races and the feeble minded was Planned Parenthood's founding mission. Abortion, euthanasia and sterilization were how it planned to accomplish that goal from the start.
The few trans/non-binary kiddos I’ve known of are all being raised by single moms, who themselves have some issues. So indeed! Perhaps this is all part of PPs plan to keep prevent single motherhood and mental illness from being passed on.
In contrast, the kids of elite two parent families around here are all very boy or very girl.
My Companion mother makes 55 bucks an hour on the PC(Personal PC). She has been out of w0rk for quite some time however last month her check was 11,000 bucks only w0rking on the PC(Personal PC) for 9 hours per day.

According to Jordan Peterson, there's a strong correlation between mothers with Borderline Personality Disorder and "transgender" kids.
In order to treat a person and take any steps such as drug treatment toward SEX CHANGE, the patient FIRST must have a diagnosis of Sexual Dysphoria. This is a CLINICAL PSYCHIATRIST full diagnosis, not a medical practitioner's opinion, nor an RNP etc.
The moment that Sexual Dysphoria is diagnosed a treatment plan must be evaluated. When any doctor or clinic bypasses the REQUIRED BY LAW diagnosis and treatment, then their activity is practicing medicine without a license (the proper license). In many states this is a major criminal offense. In some states it is not.
When a teacher or counselor couples a student toward sex change that is practicing medicine without a license, and or practicing clinical psychology without a license. The penalty needs to be at minimum 5 years in prison far any such activity. IT should NOT matter that a minor is satisfied, what matters is that it happened. The statute of limitations needs to be extended to 25 years for this, and any person that knows it happened should be able to begin the criminal complaint. A parent, or a best friend or another teacher.
Too much porn? What does that mean? "Infinite, free" porn has been the reality for some time.
You're part of the problem.
The topic at hand is "how should we approach a free web with an archive of 100 years of porn, mostly free, no longer protected by copyright?"
The answer is "parent your kids."
The tricky thing is that free porn replaces prostitutes for many guys. Is this a good thing or a bad thing for society?
It's bad business for the prostitutes!
How can anyone make an informed assessment of the quantity until they've seen all of it? Maybe there's something that's still necessary and has never been filmed, but the only way to know is to have seen everything that currently exists.
>>Women prefer more violent porn
mme dillinger prefers the vids where she has the starring role.
Women prefer to think they like more violent porn
Fixed It For Reality. I'm sure Aella thinks her data is saying something that she thinks is true, but the Bureau of Prison data from the US and a wide array of other countries kinda objectively demonstrates it's not true.
chicks' innate hatred for each other is fed by "as long as it's happening to her on tv I'm good"
There’s also the accumulated general lost in translation and detachment from reality as well.
The sort of thing where a young woman says, “I’d love a drink and some light bondage.” and someone prepares her a drink and restrains her tight, but not too tight; but an older man says, “I’d love a drink and some light bondage.” and his wife says, “The beer’s on the last aisle at the grocery store and the twine you use to tie the xmas tree to the top of the car is in the cabinet in the garage. Don’t asphyxiate yourself.”
lol exactly
A lot of women do seem to really go for the rape fantasies.
Again, not just rape but fanatical about violence, physicality, and sex generally.
The number of women I know who won't let their kids play or even watch football because it's too violent far, far exceeds the number of men.
Women: I'd enjoy reading some fictional porn where the woman gets spanked a little, maybe some bondage with silk scarves in a billionaire's sex dungeon.
Men: Yeah, I don't think I'd enjoy watching porn where the live actress has to get a few stitches and go through the concussion protocol after she wakes up.
Aella: Women enjoy violent porn more than men.
Her analysis never really addresses or breaks down this potential dichotomy except inasmuch as to reiterate or exacerbate it.
plus if it's that same chick her apartment walls are filthy.
Pretty much every romance paperback is centered on a rape fantasy (that's why they're called "bodice rippers"). That's because women like the idea of not being held responsible for illicit sex. If the guy who turns her on won't take no for an answer, then the woman has no responsibility for what happens, even if she likes it.
As much as I like and respect Aella, one thing that even she'd admit about her data is that even though she's got a large quantity of it, the surveys she takes are generally answered by a self-selecting sample.
I'm not a professional statistician or sociologist, so I'm not sure if there's some point at which having a far larger number of self-selecting respondents is considered to balance against having data from a much smaller number of randomly selected individuals. She's maybe getting answers from 20-50k people in some cases, but they're all following her on one or more platforms like twitter/x or substack; I don't know if that can possibly make for as "accurate" a result as groups like Rassmusen or Gallup who will ask 900-2500 random people to answer an opinion poll and claim that it's accurate within a few percent on predicting the rates in a population of 300 million.

>Women prefer more violent porn
And Liz rolls her eyes...
Women are women. Stop making it weird.
Similar laws have passed in Louisiana, Texas, Montana, and Arkansas,
Red state censorship.
Some here deny the obvious.
Sure it is. What's your point? Infinity minus 'a lot' is still infinity. Isn't "Well, he's still allowed to speak. Where's the harm?" the common (and very facile) lefty defense of censorship?
Real living women are starting to be turned down in favor of the competition (porn). Porn also won't change its mind and metoo your ass 6 months later.
True, and the same could be said regarding sexbots.
*Checks inventory of RC receivers, servos, IC controls, and silicone mannequins.*
🙂
😉
And AI.
Artificial Reality will win the race with sexbots for providing completely convincing fantasy sex.
I, of course, was presuming that AI would be part of any good, premium sexbot experience.
The problem is, the sexbots would have to be completely convincing to be exciting to most people. Robotics is very far away from that. On the other hand, we see every night in our dreams that our brains are capable of creating completely real-seeming fantasies. If information technology can harness that ability and create directed artificial experiences, then we'll have our "holodeck" and the sexbots won't be able to compete.
This is what I really don't get. I indulge in some porn, but it's a poor substitute for an intimate connection with an actual woman.
That depends.
Porn won't judge you by your money. Well, it will like you more for more money, but it will like you enough for free.
Aella seems smart, with a lively personality...but the "ick factor" exists for an evolutionary reason. Is a "student of kink" able to avoid any slippery slope* effects? Because that's a real downside.
*-not even a single entendre.
Is a “student of kink” able to avoid any slippery slope* effects?
Dubious. Her "study" is 100% reliant on highly subjective web data and, seemingly, asks no elucidative or contradictory questions to even begin probing at claimed statements vs. revealed preferences. She's got to know her study is better title "Women tell themselves..." or "Women profess anonymously in public..." rather than "Women prefer..."
It seems possible, even exceedingly likely, especially given the acknowledged differences in preferred media. that women don't actually prefer violent sex or porn more than men, it's just that men are more conservative about what they call violent. Women are fine reading about fictional women getting tied up and paddled but men aren't fine with women, on camera, getting slapped across the face.
She seems to try to traipse around these issues by getting different opinions on brutality and S&M and Bongage, but she never generates any sort of objective touchstones and relies solely on vague inferences. So, either she's a horrible data scientist with no clue what she's doing, or she's a performer selling an act.
The link on her name says she does "sex work[]" for $3,000 an hour.
The demographic which she caters to would probably skew older. Does she take precautions so that none of them does a Félix Faure?
to answer the title question: NO!
There was never too much porn. There never will be. Humans are wired with a very high libido (at least males, can't speak for the distaff side), and there are not enough willing partners around to meet the needs, even within the gay community.
So, no, not by a long shot. It's what humans do, and we may as well face it. And enjoy it.
My $0.20 ($0.02 adjusted for inflation since I started keeping track).
I'll disagree. There is always opportunity cost. And I'll bet that porn tends more towards addictive behavior than it does towards simply wasting a few spare hours. And I mean addictive behavior in the truest sense - transcription factors (eg ΔFosB) that exist for the purpose of rewiring your brain accumulate and soon dominate various brain neurons so that parts of your brain can't do anything else but reinforce what stimulated them. In the case of porn, it is technovoyeurism and the dopamine rewards of that that are stimulating those neurons. Neurons that can then no longer be stimulated by engaging with a real woman. And soon enough, require more and more porn to get less and less reward. Worse - those same parts of the brain that get rewired for addiction are also the parts of the brain where depression manifests. So even if someone rationally wants to deal with the addiction, they can't be motivated to do anything about it.
This has nothing to do with the bullshit of these conservative prohibitionists. Just - there's no reason to defend porn as harmless simply because some assholes want to prohibit it.
Ah, but couldn't this be said for anything that creates a dopamine high?
Say what you want, sex will never be as addictive as eating. I can't go a single day without it, even though it's terrible for your health if you do it too much.
Go without food for around 30 days and the body starts to eat itself.
As for porn, well...eating yourself is only possible with big organs or having a few fewer vertebrae.
🙂
😉
I don't think so. From what I understand, ΔFosB is more like the cause of the addiction and dopamine dysfunction is the symptom. ΔFosB is a long-lasting factor that changes the gene expression for a precursor protein to both fat (incl prob neurons which is where dopamine would factor in) and bone cells. The combination of a long-lasting transcription factor and those altered fat cells that have a lifetime well beyond any immediate 'trigger' kind of defines the addiction. That is what is implicated in alcohol, nicotine, meth, cocaine, opioids, PCP, etc addiction. ΔFosB overexpression is also part of sucrose ingestion, sex, and, most addictive of all, running on a hamster wheel. Dopamine dysfunction would be the symptom of addiction - drug use that becomes more motivating than a dopamine reward for work achievements, sucrose that replaces any satisfaction with healthy foods, or porn that replaces a real sex drive.
Just my guess of what's happening.
Name one more brain chemical and I’ll shoot you. Dopamine is a myth, same as serotonin and oxytocin. It’s a lie perpetuated by the medical industry.
What pron does do is perpetuate and exacerbate fetish, which is unhealthy in a marriage. But no more than a whore would. So there’s that.
And the flat Earth was created 6000 years ago.
You're part of the problem.
Me too. And damn proud of it
🙂
😉
For $5, could someone French-kiss her for 6 seconds?
No.
Too much porn. Guess I'll have to stop creating and posting new content.
Seems like a "dormant commerce clause" slam dunk. No matter where the porn is produced/consumed, it almost certainly crosses numerous state and national borders between hosting site and viewer.
So I guess I will need to cross the Potomac next time I want to beat my wood to some pornhub? No problem! The White House is a 10 minute drive
But the place is so repugnant. Wanking in Washington, D.C. would be a fruitless (and protein-less) pursuit.
Hasn’t anyone heard of VPN’s
In the US, where we've been allowed to access pretty much anything online without the government trying to stop us, no, most people are not familiar with VPNs. I suspect that's about to change.
This is already irrelevant. AI porn generators already generate high quality images, and high quality video is probably going to be everywhere within a year. You describe what you want, it generates it. You can download the software and run it at home.
Porn has also been part of video game mods for many years now. With the new AI generators and better engines, game porn will be fully interactive and photo quality.
I'll not bother posting links; you can find them with a simple web search.

My most recent pay test was for a 12-hour-per-week internet job for $9,500. For months, my sister's friend has been making an average of 15,000, and she puts in about 20 hours every week. As soon as I gave it a try, I was shocked at how simple it was.

Like everything else in human activities, the signal volume keeps increasing (striving for attention) until the signal-to-noise ratio approaches zero. AI porn will ultimately eradicate real human porn, because biology is imperfect.
Or maybe not. I mean, the "signal volume" on drugs has increased, but most people are not fentanyl addicts. There are certain personality types susceptible to these kinds of addictions, and they will likely simply disappear from the gene pool.
