What the Chesa Boudin Recall Means for America
Journalist Nancy Rommelmann reports from San Francisco on the ouster of a leading progressive district attorney.
HD DownloadIn 2020, Chesa Boudin became San Francisco's district attorney, promising radical new policies that exemplified the city's leading-edge liberalism. Cops would make fewer arrests, and more wrongdoers would be diverted to drug and mental health programs instead of prison. Prosecutors would be forbidden from seeking cash bail, and arrests for consensual sex work, "public camping," and public urination would be a thing of the past.
After two years of rising complaints about quality of life, San Francisco residents have overwhelmingly voted him out of office in a special election. Journalist Nancy Rommelmann covered the recall for Reason, and she talks about what Boudin's ouster might mean not just for the City by the Bay but for California and other progressive D.A.s around the country.

You fail to mention so much of what deeply angered residents:
1. Requesting that the Governor of New York pardon his murdering parents for their role in an armored car robbery where guards were executed.
2. His joy in prosecuting police rather than criminals
3. His complete dismissal of hate crimes by negroes against Asians in San Francisco
4. His refusal to prosecute killers
This guy remains an example of every misery that progressives love.
In The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand juxtaposes the life-affirming image of a fountainhead with certain “anti-life”* forces, possessed with a “malicious hatred of existence.”
* This is the name of one of the chapters toward the end of the book.
The Weather Underground creeps, George Soros, Chesa Boudin, Antifa. I can't think of anyone who better embodies the anti-life creed.
(correction: "Anti-life" is the name of a chapter in Atlas Shrugged.)
I’ve made so far this year working online and I’m a full time student. I’m using an online business opportunity I heard about and I’ve made such great money. (res-52) It’s really user friendly and I’m just so happy that I found out about it. Here’s what I do.

A child of the Weather Underground? Oh good Lord, you couldn't make this stuff up, but there's no point in being amazed or appalled anymore.
Like the guy in LA he prosecutes based on identity politics.
Boudin blamed “right-wing billionaires” for his defeat. This coming from a left wing candidate bankrolled by billionaire George Soros.
Nothing is going to be learned by the Left. They shun introspection, they ascribe blame for the world on others, and are driven to bludgeon us all into submission. That is their goal. This isn't that difficult to understand.
The irony is palpable.
The majority of people voting Boudin out of office are Liberals. Not 'progressives,' but true Liberals. Being Liberal does not mean letting felons out on the streets to rob, assault, and murder people. Being Liberal does not mean allowing people to camp, shoot up, and defecate on the streets. That's some radical Leftist/Anarchist nutjob stuff. Even if no Republicans had voted he would have been out of office because he is out of his mind. His whole career is informed by his status as the son of terrorists.
That's correct Clemdane and that is what most of us Democrats are. You might notice that in the latest postings about the recent school shootings, the defund the police movement - always a progressive, not liberal position - is being taken up by the "libertarians" here. It seems the Texas Red plan to rely on cops and citizens to curb gun violence while letting more guns out on the street didn't work at all.
Right, because Chesa hid his ideals, his background, and his platform from the poor San Francisco residents who would never vote a progressive into office. They were hoodwinked!
Or we could admit that Democrat and progressive are synonymous these days, and this is one of the few times when liberals immediately felt the results of their stupid ideas. Hence the recall.
The Democrat party has been taken over by progressives; no liberals to be found in the Democratic party anymore.
No right wing billionaire is going to waste a dime on SF politics.
Right wing billionaires believe that people in SF should rot in the hell of their own making.
Indeed. It's what they voted for and got it good and hard. I have no sympathy for the people of Frisco.
Unbelievable.
Wiki:
Early life and education
Boudin was born in New York City to Jewish parents.[11] His parents, Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert, were Weather Underground members. When Boudin was 14 months old, both were arrested and convicted of murder for their role as getaway car drivers in the 1981 Brink's robbery in Rockland County, New York.[12] His mother was sentenced to 20 years to life and his father to 75 years to life for the felony murders of two police officers and a security guard.[13][14]
After his parents were incarcerated, Boudin was raised in Hyde Park, Chicago by adoptive parents Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, who, like his parents, had been members of the Weather Underground.[15
Early career
Before law school, Boudin traveled to Venezuela and served as a translator in the Venezuelan Presidential Palace during the administration of Hugo Chavez.[25]
Who could have guessed that a red diaper baby born to terrorists and raised by another set of terrorists could be spectacularly wrong politically?
And worked for a socialist dictator.
Now if they would go after London Breed and her contingent of neo-Marxists.
" she talks about what Boudin's ouster might mean not just for the City by the Bay but for California"
What it means is that Reason has finally found a journalist who is willing to work a little bit for a story, and step outside the cloistered walls of their East Coast enclaves.
When you compare Ms Rommelmann's reporting to the other two articles discussing this issue (and ENB's previous mentions), it becomes clear that these other purported writers are not spending any time actually doing real reporting. All they did was regurgitate what is clearly propaganda from other outfits that never bothered to come to San Francisco. Since NYT says crime is down in SF, it must be something else like Police Union Money that is tanking Boudin, amiright?!
I remember back during Rathergate, the sneer about bloggers was that they were people sitting at home behind their computers (in their pajamas), not going out and beating the streets for information. Well if that wasn't epic projection, then the reporters of the world have instead become that which they despised. Because as near as I can tell, none of the Blue Check Twitteratti or usual suspects here at Reason have bothered to do anything but distill and repackage the same WaPo, NYT, Twitter toilet water swirling around the news cycle.
How many "reporters" breathlessly covered overrun hospitals during the "Covid Surge" in April 2020, because of hyperbolic spreadsheet data in their inbox, rather than walking 3 blocks from their studio apartment to see empty hospitals? How many "journalists" were caught completely flat footed by Trump's election in places like PENNSYLVANIA? How many reporters have now acted exasperated that the people of San Francisco don't believe that they are actually safer?
Time and again, Nancy Rommelmann has stepped out of the online narrative to actually report on what the fuck is going on in these places. While Soave and Sullum fretted about "Unmarked Vans of Federal Agents" in Portland, she actually went out and walked around, and confirmed that *in fact* Antifa and their craven journalist allies were shaping lies to be fed on TV. And now, Ms Rommelmann actually went to San Francisco and confirmed what many of us here in California already know: It isn't safer, and it IS getting worse.
This isn't just about being out of touch, it is about these supposed journalists not even showing the basic respect to their audience to do the slightest amount of digging or independent research. No attempts to find people on the ground. Nothing more than regurgitating NYT articles, Sick Tweets, and maybe an email to an official spokeshole that can be picked apart using these sanitized facts.
The discipline of journalism is sick and broken, and people like Ms Rommelmann are the cure.
Rommelman's writing is excellent. I would like to see more of her work, and see several of the other writers scrapped.
The hospitals WERE overrun, that's why we had to close down all the emergency COVID treatment centers in early 2020. All the patients were at the hospital!
Overt, neither ICUs or ERs were empty during the Delta variant last summer/fall. They were full with dying and suffering patients, most of whom were too stupid to have been vaccinated. The data shows this and my personal discussions with 2 clients - one the head of the ER at a large public hospital and the other an ICU doc in 2 slightly smaller hospitals both related horror stories that you would not want to experience as either patient of doc.
You know, you can have an opinion and still rely on facts.
You are mistaken:

You are not backed up by the facts.

Not exactly to fault you, but you left out the criticism that the bloggers were also just a cesspool of amateur trolls shitposting online to stir up trouble, harass, and doxx people. Not honest, hard-working, shoe-leather reporters like Taylor Lorenz, Sabrina Erdely, Alyssa Marino, Brian Stelter, Asha Rangappa, Nikole Hannah-Jones, etc., etc.
Jim Costa, Taylor Lorenze are a few I can think of who would serve the American people better by becoming trash collectors. Wait a minute....they already are.
Maybe it would be better if they just killed themselves.
It means even Democrat states don't want the progressive soft on crime agenda.
Well, they say they do. Until they get it good and hard.
> ...that exemplified the city's leading-edge liberalism
It's NOT liberalism! It's progressivism. Liberalism is about individuals and freedom. Neo-liberals can claim to be liberals (if you squint hard) but not this breed of collectivist identitarians and progressives.
How can you get this right, but still have such a raging case of TDS?
I think some people are just put off by Trump's hair and his money. It's simple envy.
Thank you! Not liberal at all.
and she talks about what Boudin's ouster might mean not just for the City by the Bay but for California and other progressive D.A.s around the country.
Boudin is not the first "progressive DA" to be handed his hat and drop kicked out the door. Seattle was so fed up with its DA it voted for a... this is hard for me to type... but here goes... a Republican into the office.
Now I think there were some unique circumstances that led to that. Namely, that the mainstream alternative was a bomb-throwing, I-hate-America radical who literally wanted to close down the jails, prisons and abolish the police. And the local media called her the "sane" one. So for the first time in my memory, Seattle voted to NOT double/quadruple/quintuple down, they said "Yeah, no, we've had enough rape and murder, thank you very much." and chose the less mainstream alternative.
The problem is that the same voters who believed in Chesa Boudin's unicorn farts are still there, wondering what sort of farts will magically cure the problems.
Chesa Boudin can further aid in San Francisco's rehabilitation by throwing himself off the Golden Gate bridge.
It's regrettable that the voters weren't given the option of ostracizing the commie prick.

It means a small battle has been won but winning the war to return America back to borders, language and culture is still a very long long shot.
Is this the third or 4th article about this douche?
But zero articles about Hillary Clinton's lawyer getting acquitted of lying to the FBI. Despite, you know, pretty clear, actual evidence that he did actual lie to them.
How many stories has Reason published about Rudy Guiliani?
It means that even in San Francisco a progressive politician can mess things up so badly the electorate will not tolerate them.
Can we stop calling communists progressives?
You’re right, they’re center left liberals now.
Why? Both believe in technocracy, both believe in collectivism, both believe in being able to change human nature, and both believe in reaching some kind of utopia eventually. Where do you see the difference?
He was thrown out by liberal Democrats and by overwhelming numbers and was always opposed by our Vice President who was a SF DA.
Okay, I'll take "what is schadenfreude?" for $200.
Boudin deserved to get recalled. Do you object?
George Gascon is next. The Kim Foxx then.....
I have to wonder at all those people who dutifully voted for Boudin, after all being the good liberal progressives they are, why wouldn't they?
The people of Frisco got what they voted for. They knew his politics and supported them, now they have buyer's remorse.
Too bad. I have no sympathy for the people of Frisco. You got what you voted for.
You mean what Soros paid for. Good and hard.
