Stossel: The Rise of Citizen Journalists
A new wave of journalists, like Tim Pool, use "new media" to tell it like it is.
HD DownloadTim Pool is part of what some call the new media—citizen journalists who work for themselves.
Increasingly, John Stossel says, such journalists cover things the mainstream media misses.
That brings them viewers. More than a million people subscribe to Pool's online channels.
Pool leans left and supported Bernie Sanders. But he reports whatever he sees.
Earlier this year, the media jumped on a video of a grinning Covington High School kid wearing a Trump hat, claiming he was taunting a native American man—but Pool was skeptical.
"All of these big news outlets, even the Washington Post, CNN, they immediately made the assumption 'he must be a racist,'" Pool told Stossel.
"I didn't make that assumption … I said, I have no idea what this is. I just see a guy banging a drum and a kid with a weird look on his face. So I looked at some other videos," Pool said.
On YouTube, Pool found a longer clip of the encounter and used that to show that the Native American elder approached the kids as they waited for a bus—not the other way around, as had been claimed. There was no evidence that the kids were racist.
"No one watched the longer video?" Stossel asks?
"Nope," Pool says. "Here's what happens. One left-wing journalist says, look at this racist. His buddy sees it and says, wow, look at this racist. And that's a big ole circular game of telephone where no one actually does any fact-checking. And then—New York Times, Washington Post, CNN all publish the same fake story."
Pool, along with Reason's Robby Soave, told the real story.
Pool wouldn't have been hired by most legacy media outlets—he doesn't have a college degree. Or even a high school degree.
"I like it that you're a high school dropout," Stossel tells Pool.
"Yeah, me too," Pool says. Instead of going through the traditional education system, Pool learned to report by actually doing it.
He got his start filming Occupy Wall Street and posting his videos online. He also covered fighting in Ferguson, Missouri, in Ukraine, and in Catalonia.
But his video that got the most views on YouTube is one where he went to Sweden to find out the truth about alleged "no-go zones."
"Your video said what?" Stossel asks.
"That it was nuanced," Pool replies. Crime is up after Sweden took a lot of refugees, but still really low by American standards.
"You got lots of views with nuance?" Stossel replies.
"Yeah … Here's what I think happens. The establishment, the corporate media … They seem to have a narrative on these things," Pool says. "The average person just wants some kind of honest take on it."
Pool is part of a new wave of independent journalists and thinkers—leftists, centrists libertarians, and conservatives—who use the new media to get the word out.
Stossel says he's glad that gives us more options.

Yay Tim!
Cool! Cut loose the whole interview.
Thank you for posting this.
Free speech !!!
I was watching a video last night (can't recall which) and it was mentioned in an entirely off-hand way that the concept of "free speech" was "right-leaning".
I guess I'm a republican now.
Free speech is a dog whistle for fascism because it was a central governing principle for the Nazi regime.
That's how a lot of these media circle-jerks end up becoming the narrative--it's really just a bunch of Blue Checkmarks re-tweeting each other until it becomes conventional wisdom.
Chorus: Tell me, friend, why do we take so long to let our bile burst forth when someone tries to irritate our nest? Bring it out now, bring it out now, bring out now your sharp big prick. Stretch it out long and sharp, a real punishment for these two. (Handing their capes to the boys)
Take our capes boys and run to Cleon screaming. Tell him the news, tell him to come and crush an enemy of the state, to destroy the man who insists that we must no longer judge!
Misocleon: Friends! Friends! Stop shouting and listen to facts!
Chorus: I’ll shout, by Zeus! All the way to the Heavens!

Sounds more like the rise of the corporate journalist.

Sounds like he's using the best avenues available to allow his reporting to be seen. Lots of individuals use these sites without giving up their free will.
It's called swimming in dirty water. We don't do it for the freedom of it all..
How long do these people have to be around before they get to chisel off that ancient, rusted 'new' the fake media keeps attaching to them?
If you support Bernie Sanders you're not leaning left, you're full laying down on the floor left.
Hopefully, we can drive old media (like Reason) out of business.
I think he remembered all the possible social networks. It remains only to add an amount. And an article on how to design a linkedin profile properly. I can do this. https://linkedinprofilewritingservice.com/grow-your-career-with-professional-linkedin-profile-writers To have a complete set. lol
Even persons on the left like Tim Poole & Glen Greenwald are becoming aware that something very strange & very unAmerican is happening in America.
I've watched some of his videos. He is definitely a stupid lefty by inclination, BUT he is actually quite even handed, and not too nuts. He also seems to recognize limitations to what kinds of stuff social policy can achieve... I would say he's one of those people who accepts that higher taxes and social welfare will slow down economic growth, but that it's morally worth it... He's not just completely detached from reality like AOC or something.
He's not my hero, but if the whole left were like him we'd be in a LOT less awful spot than we are.
Just wait until he posts some unpleasant truth that the powers that be don't like. I can't comment on articles that use Facebook to log in because I stated the FACT that during the Eemian, and most of the hundred or so other inter-glacial maximums over the last 13 million years, Earth was much hotter than today, the oceans generally rose 30-50 feet, the Greenland glaciers melted, Northern Canada was covered in pine forests, and there was a sudden CO2 spike every time. And human technology was the cause in exactly zero of those. The reason given was "Intellectual dishonesty".
It's the climate scientists who only look at data from the last few thousand years that are being intellectually dishonest, in their quest for unlimited new research grants and the adulation of their peers. The truth is that "global warming" does exist. It's part of a natural, re-occurring cycle, and there is nothing we can do to stop it, and even if we could, life thrives and evolves during the inter-glacial. During the ice age that follows, a few million humans can survive, at best.
When some kid working for Facebook has the power to silence anybody whose use of a scientific fact to make an argument against something that they feel strongly about, it's a little frightening.
I heard the term new media from my friend but don't know that Tim is running it actually. Here the video is very interesting and reveals many secrets for me. As a student, I mostly visit https://essayontime.com.au/can-i-pay-someone-to-do-my-assignment-in-australia website to write my assignment in Australia and focus on entertainment news.
I use this site for study: https://papersdude.com/tag/a-dolls-house/ . Thanks to him, I wrote a term paper and several abstracts. This is the best site for writing essays. I recommend to try it for everyone who is studying. And if you learn to use this site correctly, you will have more time to watch such cool videos.
