The Trump Economy Is Now Pay To Play
Plus: Trump talks with Putin in Alaska, federal troops flood D.C., a controversial Bureau of Labor Statistics nominee, and a listener question about the hosts as a band

This week, editors Peter Suderman, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Nick Gillespie, and Matt Welch dig into the Trump administration's increased meddling in the tech sector, from profit-sharing deals to a possible government stake in Intel. They discuss the recent spike in the consumer price index, the president's controversial pick to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and what the latest data signal for the economy.
The conversation then shifts to Washington, D.C., where President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency, put the local police under federal control, and deployed National Guard troops from multiple states as part of a sweeping crime crackdown. Despite over 1,700 officers and agents on the streets last week, the arrests were no higher than an average day, raising questions about whether the operation is more about politics than public safety. Later, the hosts turn to Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where threats of "severe consequences" gave way to softer rhetoric and even the adoption of some of Putin's language. A listener question lightens the mood by imagining the Roundtable as a band, with Peter on sousaphone.

While the US economy may be "pay to play", at least Trump is making the firms pay by investing in the US rather than overseas, rather than the typical pay to play that politicians use to fatten their personal wallets.
Congress has given the President too much power because they didn't want to bear the burden of the regulations they passed, and now we have a benevolent semi-dictator using the power Congress shouldn't have given away to make the US better. I hope he gets Congress to write a law moving the legislative power back to Congress rather than the executive branch bureaucracy just before he leaves office because I believe he'd sign it.
Reason is on the side of control through regulations, see lack of an interest in deregulation, and excess spending brought USAID and other government graft centers, see no interest in reconciliation.
Nobody is forcing companies to take federal dollars, Intel or university, or sell items in ITAR control to China.
Prefer if Trump shut down both completely.
But reason ignoring all the reduction of control shows them not being serious.
An OBL take on this would be welcome. Interestingly, Sandy did drop in on Friday afternoon’s article about deer.

He's doing both personal corruption and socialism.
Show us how he is profiting.

"Unprecented self enrichment", LOL.
Forget it. It is MikeTown.
Forgive me for the logical fallacy, but I can’t take claims from someone who organized a “How to beat the Broligarchs” event, seriously.
That's OK. One down 3 to go.
Please cite the federal law that allows a president to demand US investment in exchange for favorable treatment? Or the law where the president can demand 15% of sales?
Please cite the law that allows for any federal investment. I know your doctorate is fake, but would think you could at least comprehend I'm against any funding here.
But if you want precedence, the actions tied to Obamas auto bailout dumdum.
Solyndra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But MG is entirely to TDS-addled and dishonest (and a pile of shit) to get the point.
federal troops flood D.C
I've never had any desire to go to that swamp of crime and filth. Now I'm considering making a trip to see the sights.
DC Police Union agrees this is the time to do it.

Please don’t come back. Seattle doesn’t want your white trash, bigoted boomer ass.
So boring.
Hey, white trash retard, any evidence that the 2020 election was stolen yet?
Still boring.
Still a retard
Yup. You’re both boring and retarded.
*yawn*
Yes, we know you're still a retard, KAR.
Fuck off and die, asswipe.
Where can I purchase your books?
Fuck off and die, shitstain.
I'm too straight for Seattle. Google maps shows a magnetic anomaly over my house, that's how straight.
As a youngster, I briefly lived in Seattle. Recall one time hanging out at a house with some local musicians. This one guy was all strung out on heroin complaining about this other local musician he kept referring to as a commercial sell out. It then went weird when he got a shotgun and was threatening to shoot himself. It was surreal. The others there talked him down and he then claimed he was just kidding around. I got the fuck out of there. Dunno whatever happened to that guy. Think his name is Kurt.
I actually met cobain several times when I was in high school, before he got signed to a record contract and was playing small regional venues for peanuts (the father of one of my buddies from school owned such a place). He was kind of a dick.
I didn’t realize that was Cobain until 2009. Probably because I only knew his first name, and didn’t talk to him much because of the aforementioned dickishness. Plus, bands like that were barely more than a dime a dozen back then.
In retrospect, I probably met a number of people that would become at least somewhat famous when the grunge movement took off in the 90’s.
This story is most likely BS, but Cobain was a dick.
I find it highly improbable a white trash, bigoted, square hick like you had anything to do with that type of music.
Even when talking music, boring.
Federal Way or Sea Tac or whatever shithole your in doesn’t want you either.
You guessed it. Boring.
No one outside of the west side wants you Marxist faggots in our neighborhoods either. Pinkos like you are how we got Insley, and now that shitweasel Ferguson.
Washington and Oregon desperately need for Trump to declare martial law and put you scumbag pinkos in camps so you can can’t do anymore damage.
It’s not like Marxists have a right to exist.
Or you could just move to Idaho and leave us the fuck alone.
Stop trying to force your backwards, bigoted, treasonous values on us.
Usual boring Karen.
Usual retarded Jesse…
If anyone’s a Karen it’s you goddamn miserly bigots telling everyone what they can and can’t do.
MAGA are the fucking Karens. Doesn’t matter how much you lie about it it’s the truth. Just like you’re the neocons and the confederates.
Fuck off retard.
Maybe I need another word. Here. For you.

Ahh. It was the Karen comment that hit too close to home.
Apologies boring Karen.
Oh that’s a good one! Sick burn!
Venezuela is doing great with a socialist dictatorship. Let's be more like them. If you disagree you have TDS.
Poor shrike. Just a few years ago you were praising Venezuela along with the other socialists here.
What the fuck is shrike?
I've always praised Venezuela. Chavez was my kind of communist, nationalizing industries and fixing exchange rates. As a libertarian, we need big government to take charge so we don't have to think for ourselves. And freedoms are just burdens. I want to be told what to do. If I get shot for driving to a concert, that's a small price to pay for sexy Maduro dominating me.
Poor shrike. Every sock he tries this tactic. Lol. Put down the child porn shrike.
And yes. We know you're a soros socialist.
It's all about the big hairy guys. Bears like Maduro. Me, I'm low T so I look like a sphinx. But my sphincter opens wide for any guy with a rug.
Fuck off and die, asswipe troll.
Keep talking dirty, I'm about to come
"What the fuck is shrike?"
If you're not a shrike sock, you're doing your best interpretation, shitstain.
When has corporate/industry pay to play not existed in the past 50 or more years? Most of Congress is bought and paid for by corporate/industry funded PAC campaign contributions and lobbyists have had their hand in writing legislation for decades.
