It's Bodies vs. the State
Plus: The editors ponder the lack of women’s pants pockets in the marketplace.

In this week's The Reason Roundtable, editors Matt Welch, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Peter Suderman, and Nick Gillespie discuss the latest protests against "zero-Covid" policies in China as well as other examples of lingering public health authoritarianism.
0:57: China's protests against harsh "zero-Covid" policies
14:20: Lingering COVID restrictionism in the U.S.
33:10: Weekly Listener Question:
I have found, what is for me, a paradox. I want to hear what y'all think of it, but I am primarily interested in hearing from Katherine, since she is a woman and women account for some 51 percent of the population. My personal paradox is this: How is it that women are 51 percent of the market and yet cannot find women's pants with pockets? Free minds. Free markets. No Potemkin pockets.

Ya know …. if you have any belief in markets whatsoever (and I’m guessing you don’t, since you emphasize that 51% as if crossing the halfway mark by 1% actually matters), you wonder instead why the vast majority of women, certainly far more than 51%, don’t want pants pockets, since markets do provide what people want, even when governments declare it contraband.
Q version 1: Why do so many women wear dresses or skirts when so many women want pants with pockets?
Q version 2: Why do so many women betray their sisterhood by wearing jeans and other pants which do have pockets and refuting the victimhood of their downtrodden agency-less sisters?
ETA Q version 3: Why do so many women kowtow to the patriarchy by carrying purses instead of demanding pockets in the pants they don't wear?
You know, as a woman, every pair of slacks I've ever bought have had pockets. I don't even check for them, they just do automatically. I seriously wonder where some of these people shop that they don't have them.
Obviously they shop with their fathers and husbands and brothers. They are slaves to the patriarchy.
Oh wait, wrong slant.
Obviously their fathers and husbands and brothers shop for them and refuse to accept their agency. The lack of pockets is to prevent them from keeping a key so they can get out the front door and drive away. This is also why they are kept in high heels, so they can't run fast; or barefoot in the kitchen.

… so many women want pants with pockets?
Sounds like an opportunity, if true.
Exactly, just as Don Boudreaux always says on Cafe Hayek: so many politicians and academics know so much more than business people about investments, yet none of them ever invest their own money to show everyone how much smarter they are. Strange how that works ....
I really love the hypocrisy. They constantly whine that business people are greedy for profits above all else, that they think of nothing but profits, and yet here and in so many other cases, they refuse such easy profits because ...? I'm not sure how they reconcile the two conflicting beliefs, but these are partisan politicians.
I was discussing this many years ago with an activist complaining about lack of supermarkets in certain urban areas and how the local mom & pop stores (many times owned by persons of a different race) were ripping everyone off. When I asked why he and his fellow activists didn't start a store themselves, I was told "that takes capital." And I've heard the same about payday loan shops, appliance stores, used car dealers, and rent-to-own furniture stores.
they refuse such easy profits because …? of the oppressive patriarchy keeping them down, duh.
Why don't the 51% of the population show up for WNBA games instead of watching 'Real Housewives'?
Shush your mouf.
>> cannot find women's pants with pockets?

Pockets: Because they still are wearing jeans. Because most still have purses while men are still trying to figure out man bags. Because style says a nice curvy butt without lumpy wallet or keys is sexy.
I think it's the last one, really. No one cares about a lumpy man pants. Wallet lump, keys lump, smartphone lump. But women gotta have nice curve lines.
Now what men do carry around manbags instead of using pockets? Gays and metrosexuals and Europeans (not necessarily the same thing). If they're young they want to show off their tight man buns and unit.
p.s. In the old days of baggy mens pants, didn't matter what you put in pockets. I wish those were still in style. But they were still a pain to keep the pleats nice and crisp. Baggy mom jeans are better for me akshually.
