Jason Riley: Thomas Sowell's Unique Insights on Race, Economics, and Politics
A new documentary and forthcoming biography pay tribute to the economist's intellectual fearlessness and commitment to empirical research.

Thomas Sowell is one of the most influential economists, syndicated columnists, and social critics of the past half-century, having authored provocative, best-selling books on everything from race relations to childhood development to, most recently, Charter Schools and Their Enemies. His masterworks include Knowledge and Decisions, which uses Friedrich Hayek's insights about distributed information to explain both how markets work and why intellectuals disdain markets; A Conflict of Visions, which explores the ideological origins of political struggles; and Basic Economics, a best-selling primer now in its fifth edition.
Sowell's inspiring life—he was born black and poor in North Carolina in 1930 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago at the age of 38—and expansive work are now the subjects of a new documentary, Common Sense in a Senseless World (watch here) and a forthcoming biography titled Maverick.
Nick Gillespie speaks with Jason L. Riley, the author of the film and the biography, about why even at age 90, Sowell is more relevant today than ever. A fellow at The Manhattan Institute and a columnist for The Wall Street Journal, Riley tells me that Sowell's empirically driven research and his fearless engagement with even the most controversial topics are exactly what our world needs more of.

Thomas Sowell is a fucking triple black belt intellectual. Thank you Nick for this.
And to say he's not a fan of the current cultural direction would be a gross understatement.
Sowell on Black Lives Matter.
"Even though I'm regarded as pessimistic, I was never pessimistic enough to think that things would degenerate to where they are now. Where adult human beings are talking about getting rid of police..."

Agreed, Diane-Paul!!!
Thomas Sowell AND James Bovard are BOTH writer-heroes of mine from way back!!!
I am utterly disgusted to report to you, that when I take my used books (from both of these STELLAR authors) to the used-book store to sell them, the heathen bastards don't want to buy my books!!! It's a CRYING SHAME, in my humble opinion, that today's world no longer has much use for the thoughts of these eminent lovers of freedom!!!!
lol why didn't i read this? 😀 😀 😀
Because you're too stupid? Too lazy? Both, maybe?
LOL could be. Or maybe it's because it was written by the psychotic, easily-triggered dipshit that nobody reads if they don't get paid for it? 😀 😀 😀

You?
That rich white woman that died a few years ago? What was her name again? Oh, Michael Jackson.
I checked out the documentary when it came out on YouTube. It was quite good. Highly recommended.
I so admire Dr. Sowell. He is a wonderful mind and a true elder this nation would do well to look to for guidance.
But...we won't, because there are too many adult children among us now...
Maybe it's good reason is slow to write about this, to give it a second wind or something.
Sowell is an economic genius.
However, even Sowell can be wrong on some issues. He criticized The Bell Curve because he didn’t believe intelligence was heritable. But hair color, height, genetics malformations, skin color, head size, and numerous other traits are heritable. Why would intelligence be different and unique amongst human traits?
Well, there are too many other environmental factors that can affect intellectual abilities to isolate before one could even begin to ask the question of how much intelligence is hereditary. For example, hydrocephaly, lack of Oxygen in vitro and in utero, the presence of Lead or Mercury in air and water supplies, etc.
Also, even given normal physiology, IQs can rise and fall in the same person over time, depending on inclination towards standardized tests or who-knows-what-else. I know mine was lower in high school than elementary or college.
A man that caves to the cancel culture is the real slave.
Why is it that Sowell fans are almost 100% segregationists who shun and ostracize black people?
Dunno. Why do ignorant comments get blown out of your pie hole?
I always enjoyed reading his commentary and insight into many topics. He will be missed.
He’s not dead yet.
A documentary does not mean someone died.
Hey, kids. I'm 73 and still waiting for the perfect libertarian public figure or scholar to show up on Earth. Nitpicking Thomas Sowell for his impure thoughts and minor imperfections is pretty low -- though a typical libertarian trait. I spent a lot of my time in my long and modest newspaper career trying to slip libertarians and quasi-libertarians into the pages of the LA Times and two Pittsburgh dailies. Sowell was a brave, tough man. He and his pal Walter Williams took no shit from anyone and it's a tragedy that neither is a household name. I met Sowell twice, interviewed him thrice and ambushed him once. Here are the details from my substack site, which needs all the subscribers it can get. https://clips.substack.com/p/qa-thomas-sowell-our-great-economist-emeritus
Thomas Sowell's genius is not just his specific conclusions, but his methodology. He is willing to follow where the evidence leads him. So, even where he isn't fully in line with libertarians, I am sure he could be convinced otherwise with the right citation or argument.
I think his views of economics are too white to be part of black history month in the msm
That being said, I think Sowell really needs to start drinking more coca cola. FAST.
I always enjoyed reading his commentary and insight into many topics. He will be missed.

At least Whitlock got canceled for his racist remark, right?
Whitlock wasn’t completely slanderous.
Had he been a liberal, many who praise Sowell now would be calling him a stupid, black blankety blank.
A few of his economic ideas are just wrong. His criticisms of some cultural things were wrong. He’s not perfect and it seems he knows when he’s talking out of his ass.
So when his fans laud him, it’s fair to wonder if Sowell is saying what they want to hear, i.e. being a “house negro,” or if he’s sincerely espousing a view.
