Sarah Lawrence Professor's Office Door Vandalized After He Criticized Leftist Bias

Samuel Abrams says the college's president accused him of "attacking" the community and suggested he might be looking for a new job.

SLCAlison Nieman / Wikimedia CommonsAfter penning an op-ed for The New York Times decrying the ideological homogeneity of his campus administration, a conservative-leaning professor at Sarah Lawrence College discovered intimidating messages—including demands that he quit his job—on the door of his office. The perpetrators had torn down the door's decorations, which had included pictures of the professor's family.

In the two weeks since the incident, Samuel Abrams, a tenured professor of politics at Sarah Lawrence, has repeatedly asked the college's president, Cristle Collins Judd, to condemn the perpetrators' actions and reiterate her support for free speech. But after sending a tepid campus-wide email that mentioned the importance of free expression, but mostly stressed her "commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence," Judd spoke with Abrams over the phone; according to him, she accused him of "attacking" members of the community.

"She said I had created a hostile work environment," Abrams said in an interview with Reason. "If [the op-ed] constitutes hate speech, then this is not a world that I want to be a part of."

What's more, when the two met in person, Judd implied that Abrams was on the market for a new job, he said.

"I am not on the job market," he said. "I am tenured, I live in New York. Why would I go on the job market?"

Abrams interpreted Judd's remarks as a suggestion that he might be better off leaving the school. Judd did not respond to a request for comment.

Abram's op-ed criticized the "politically lopsided" events hosted by the college's Office of Student Affairs, including seminars on microaggressions, understanding white privilege, and "staying woke." It also included original research: a nationally representative survey of 900 administrators. According to this data, liberal administrators outnumber conservatives 12 to 1. This would mean the ranks of the administration are even more uniformly liberal than the faculty.

"While considerable focus has been placed in recent decades on the impact of the ideological bent of college professors, when it comes to collegiate life—living in dorms, participating in extracurricular organizations—the ever growing ranks of administrators have the biggest influence on students and campus life across the country," wrote Abrams.

Many Sarah Lawrence students and alumni did not appreciate Abrams calling attention to this issue.

"There was an emergency student senate meeting, to my knowledge," said Abrams. It was his understanding that the meeting produced a declaration calling for him to be stripped of tenure and dismissed from the college. Judd sent a campus-wide email about the meeting, which she described as "not only thoughtful, but thought-provoking."

"The Senate asked me to publicly affirm that Black Lives Matter, that LBGT+ Lives matter, and that Women's Justice matters," wrote Judd in the email. "I emphatically did."

The student senate did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Abrams' office door was vandalized on October 16, hours after the op-ed's publication. The perpetrators posted a sign on the door that read, "Our right to exist is not 'ideological,' asshole," and was signed "transsexual fag." Another flyer demanded that he apologize to residence life staff and the director of campus diversity, students of color, queer students, trans students, and other marginalized persons. Multiple messages instructed Abrams to "quit," and one told him to "go teach somewhere else, maybe Charlottesville."

Abrams believes the perpetrators tried to break into his office; some of his books had fallen off their shelves as if the sign-posters had slammed the door and the walls.

"I'm really shaken," he said.

Abrams' dealings with Judd have further unnerved him. During their conversation, she implied that he should have cleared his public writings with her before submitting them, something he described as unacceptable.

Several of Abrams' colleagues met with Judd to discuss the vandalism and express their view that such acts could not be tolerated. Judd agreed, but did not pledge to take any further actions. These professors thought she seemed scared that the students might hold more protests, creating a public relations disaster, according to Abrams.

This incident is an example of a concerning phenomenon: college administrators going soft on free speech in an effort to appease a handful of extremely aggressive students. Administrators should take greater care to avoid explicit ideological bias, and they must defend the free speech rights of professors who speak out against it. A college that attempts to muzzle, discourage, or rid itself of speech that offends the far left is failing its mission.

    Administrators should take greater care to avoid explicit ideological bias

    Odds are 12:1 against that ever happening.

  • CatoTheChipper||

    That would be true only if the probability of taking greater care to avoid explicit ideological bias were a linear function with the proportion of non-progressive administrators as the independent variable.

    I suspect that at a 12:1 ratio of progressives to non-progressives, the probability of that happening is negligible.

  • sharmota4zeb||

    Oh, common. Do you really think Detective Nase from the Department of Homeland Security was going to get off her lazy butt on Monday, November 5th just because some political activist with an ethnic background and a history of cross-dressing plastered the campus with Get Her Done print outs and Mohammed Cartoons?

  • Johnny B||

    You have to understand two things about university administrators. 1. They are almost all failed academics. They are people who made it through the tenure process but couldn't figure out how to make any lasting contributions afterwards. That is, they published the idea their supervisor helped them on, but couldn't make a go of it on their own. 2. Once they become administrators, they have nothing but contempt for those people who are able to publish, so they do everything to make their lives miserable. At a university like Sarah Lawrence College, I would expect this to be about twice as worse as the usual state university, because no-one, and I repeat, no-one, went to graduate school for four years to get a job there.

  • Marcus Aurelius||

    I think we are seeing fewer failed academics and more grievance graduates who don't attempt to do research.

    And somehow, the boards of directors have been compromised also.

    Alexandria is the Berkeley of Virginia, what can I say? I saw the story about Spencer and looked her up. It means more women need to be in college in order to become college administrators.

    The fact that 'feminists' fail to notice that most people in college are women, yet still cite an imaginary pay disparity, tells you just about everything you really need to know.

  • vek||

    That the pay gap doesn't exist, and that women aren't wired the same way as men, hence aren't drawn towards hard sciences and other good paying fields even if they're intellectually capable of it?

    Yeah it does tell me that. Not to mention the different IQ distribution between men and women that means there are far more male geniuses AND retards, which logically explains why men dominate at the top of every field of endeavor the world over.

    But let's not bring facts into the feelz fest, that might be insensitive.

  • Lester224||

    That totally explains why there are so many more women doctors and lawyers now than there were a few decades ago. The women who weren't smart enough to become doctors and lawyers suddenly became smarter when med schools started letting them in. Or maybe women didn't used to want to be doctors and lawyers because they are wired differently but the wiring changed.

  • I am the 0.000000013%||

    I think you just made vek's point...

  • vek||

    Thanks for making a statement that doesn't contradict a single thing I said.

    I never said "all women are morons" now did I?

    The fact is women SELF REPORT that they like dealing with "people" more than "things." This shows in every survey ever. This is why women are drawn to work where there is a lot of human interaction, SUCH AS being a nurse, doctor, social worker, etc.

    There are plenty of smart women... But we do have different IQ distributions. It is a fact. There are more men at the extra high end and extra low end. PERIOD. Keep in mind this is NOT universally in mens favor... Having more borderline retards in the male population is a BAD thing for men. Between that and men being generally more aggressive, it explains why men are the overwhelming majority of the prison population! It ALSO explains why most of the top people in any field are men.

    It doesn't mean any given woman isn't smarter than any given man... But at the statistical level it explains all the differences in outcomes we observe in reality. Look up "IQ distribution of men versus women" or something to that effect and read up on it jackass. Then you can make an intelligent comment on the subject next time.

    The right may typically be reactionary in nature... But BOY HOWDY, when the right reacts it can sure be a Duesey!

    "staying woke" = being stupid

    I went to uw-Madison, similar nonsense. For these kids, "protesting" was literally their job. Lived on student funds diverted to their stupid clubs and spent the majority of their time trying to out do each other.

    I really do worry about this world...
    Seems like somewhere in history there was a group of radical extremists intimidating and using threatening and violent tactics to come to power, then causing a sh*tstorm for everyone.

    Of course this time they're espousing inclusion, diversity, and love, so they can't be THAT bad... unless you dare disagree with any part of their mantra.

    This has gotta be fake news--or an elementary school. Where in These States and Dominions would you find college students who can't spell ideological?

  • vek||

    Reason # 3,634,987 that we're going to have to burn this mutha fucker down before we can rebuild it! Stuff like this is absolutely insane. That guy didn't say a single damn thing remotely inflammatory. The institutions are so infested it will never be cleared out, colleges or government.

    There is no fixing this country without some massive, fundamental change. Either secession (preferably peaceful), a civil war, a purge of leftists through (semi?)legal means, complete economic collapse, outright right wing coup, a major world war... Or many other options, take your pick.

    Thanks to the total ineptitude of both major parties for decades, several options are almost on auto pilot for being inevitable, especially economic collapse.

    People who think we're going to "long march" our way back to fixing this country are delusional IMO. It's going to require a hard reset of some sort, and possibly a big pile of dead bodies before people are ready to actually fix things. There's probably less than a 10% chance that we can long march our way back to a better country... Things just never go that direction historically once a system becomes corrupted

  • vek||

    I don't think it's even avoidable that one of those things WILL happen. I don't think America is likely to just limp along slowly turning into progressive utopia that the leftists want. One of those other things will happen long before we ever get there, causing a reset. One of those is the most likely outcome IMO.

    But if one of the above doesn't happen, then Progtopia is the only possible outcome, because we ain't fixin' it slow and steady under current conditions (economic, demographic, strategic, etc). Just not gonna happen. It has always been theoretically possible for great nations to "turn it around," yet they never do. You might get a couple year long "dead cat bounce" but that's about it.

  • TxJack 112||

    I fear what is in our future is the progressive left will push too hard and there will be a very powerful, and possibly violent pushback. When this happens, the media and other supporters will attack those pushing back and demand "legislation" to make such actions and thinking illegal. If they win, this country will cease to exist because one of two things will happen. Either we are no longer the United States and we willing abandon the Constitution as our fundamental rule of law, or the country breaks apart into 3-5 new nations between Canada and Mexico. Unless people on the coasts start trying to understand and seek common ground with those of us in the middle, this country cannot survive.

  • vek||

    Pretty much. I think we're past the finding common ground point though... We have people who believe in a fundamentally different idea of what the country should be... We're not just arguing over if the tax rate should be 3% higher or lower here.

    Hence I assume a catastrophic event of some sort in the future... What comes after that, who knows.

    I along with friends that have taught at the college level are of an opinion that many who have risen to administrative positions have, by living their entire lives within the all encompassing sphere of the college campus, failed to mature past the level of their students. The blind leading the blind!

  • Wrath0fKahn||

    Good fucking god. In the past we could rely on a healthy dose of life and reality to shale these infants out of their collegiate idiocy after they graduate, but a lot of companies now perpetuate this sort of culture and people can always shore of their dogma with online community.

  • macsnafu||

    More evidence that the left has given up on debate, discussion, and free speech. Or perhaps these students will get the shock of their lives when they leave college and start looking for real jobs.

    And these freaks were schooled, encouraged, and validated by the Democratic party. The fact the party has become a trash fire should surprise no one. The only question is: Is the freak show a cause of the disease or a symptom? Such nuances may be lost on the voter.

  • JP88||

    I wish the professor recorded his meeting with the school's president and put her on blast like Lindsey Shepard did.

  • TxJack 112||

    If you want to see the very type of world the progressive left seeks to create, all you have to do is look at college campuses. They are attempting to create a world of conformity in thought, action and deeds. They claim they are seeking openness, tolerance and diversity, yet they allow none of these. Openness requires the acceptance of all points of view. Tolerance requires the acceptance of all people with opposing points of view and Diversity requires the acceptance all of people, regardless of their point of view. Colleges seek a single point of view, but claim variations on the approved political tenets is openness. The claim to be tolerant because they permit people to hold slightly different opinions on the approved political tenets of thought. They claim they are diverse because so many people from different cultures, races and economic backgrounds all follow their approved political tenets. The only problem is there is still only one political point of view permitted.

    Student Senate never called for Abrams' tenure to be removed. They never even said his name during the meeting. The emergency meeting was about how the administration responded to the article. Their meeting minutes are public. The claims that Abrams is making with regard to Senate are complete misinformation.

  • BenjaminTheDonkey||

    He seems to be suggesting liberalism be "balanced" with cookie cutter neoconservativism. Some establishment Republican whining that his haphazard bill-of-goods platform is being underrepresented doesn't exactly evoke much sympathy from me. His article just seemed like a simple left-right paradigm subscriber whining about being underrepresented in the 2-party indoctrination circus and he'd be happy to leave liberty off campus and out of debates.

  • vek||

    Are you retarded? It's not just that they won't have a speaker come and talk on the topic of "Why Spending Trillions Bombing Arabs Is Good For America."

    They ALSO won't allow things like "Why The Free Market Economy Makes Everybody Better Off," "Why Free Speech Matters, Even If You Don't Like What They're Saying," "Why The Drug War Is Bad For Everybody," and so on. These commies aren't just stifling Neocon garbage, they're stifling ANYTHING that doesn't tow the leftist line. Get that through your head.

    ALSO, even though I HATE Neocons... The fact is that even those dirt bags shouldn't be black listed from being able to give a lecture at a college if somebody wants to put the event together.

    You really seem to not realize we're in a war for the survival of Classical Liberalism in the western world... And if these leftists win, we're going to be a new Dark Age the likes of which the world has never seen. Totalitarian states combined with modern technology can surpass even anything Orwell wrote about in 1984...

    he shouldn't have incited vandalism

  • GryFalcon||

    I hope that this professor will strategically place several inexpensive wireless cameras on the route to his office door, or on his door, and then pen another op ed piece and see who is on candid camera. It is not a good idea to teach a college full of kids that the way to express their disagreement is to become vandals. They need to learn how to pick up a pen and write their own op ed. That's what they are in college for, anyway - to learn how to "use their words".
