Cop Who Sought Photos of Teen’s Erection in Sexting Case Commits Suicide Moments Before Arrest

The cop was the sexual predator, not the teen.

AbbottPolicePolice Detective David Edward Abbott, a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington D.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, committed suicide Tuesday before law enforcement could arrest him on suspicion of sexually abusing minors.

Abbott, you will recall, was the detective in the noteworthy teen sexting case from July 2014, in which the authorities sought a warrant to take the 17-year-old male suspect to the hospital, inject him with a drug that would give him an erection, photograph his genitals, and compare the photo with existing pictures of his genitals the police had confiscated from his 15-year-old girlfriend’s phone.

The teen was eventually sentenced to one year of probation. Here’s the kicker: Abbott sued the teen’s lawyer for defamation. The lawyer, Jessica Foster, remarked to the media that the warrant to take pornographic pictures of her client—to be used as evidence that he was guilty of creating child pornography—was “crazy.”

“Who does this?” Foster had said. “It’s just crazy.”

Abbott said the comments caused him severe emotional distress; he claimed he was threatened and called a pedophile, according to NBC.

Authorities now believe Abbott was a pedophile. He had inappropriate contact with two young boys, ages 11 and 13, according to patch.com. Police attempted to arrest him at his home earlier today, but he refused to surrender and eventually shot himself.

While this outcome is certainly a tragedy for his family, the revelations about Abbott should underscore two things: His treatment of the 17-year-old in the sexting case was unconscionable, and laws criminalizing sexting between teens are intrusive and easily abused. There actually was a truly depraved sexual monster in this case, it just wasn’t the teenager.

    Authorities now believe Abbott was a pedophile. He had inappropriate contact with two young boys, ages 11 and 13, according to patch.com.

    So can we assume that Abbot himself was demanding to take pictures of the 17-yr-old's penis himself, alone, in a darkened room in the course of his "investigation"?

  • ||

    While this outcome is certainly a tragedy for his family,

    Meh. Sounds to me like it's actually doing his family a favor. They're probably better off without a pederast around.

  • Tommy_Grand||

    I have no idea if this cop was guilty as charged, but I agree that if one of my relatives were a pedophile, and guilty of touching pre-teen (11 year old) boys, I would not deem his suicide a tragedy. More like good riddance.

    Just let high schoolers and college kids "sext" each other. Investigating the conduct does more harm than good.

  • Eman||

    yeah it is so strange that a job involving pedophila would be appealing to pedophiles

  • Zeb||

    It's probably still tragic, even if they are better off without him. Plus, if they didn't know about him, they get the extra tragedy of finding out he was a child molester at the same time.

  • Careless||

    Plus, if they didn't know about him, they get the extra tragedy of finding out he was a child molester at the same time.

    Yeah, that's an extra kick in the gut

  • Kandralla||

    Yeah, I tried really, really hard to come around to feel bad for someone involved but it came down to this:

    - cop willing to resort to violence to enforce the letter of the law and in stark violation of the intent
    - probably a pedophile
    - unable to admit that what he asked for was absolutely ridiculous or that he might be wrong

    .... fuck him. Merry fucking Christmas humanity, everyone wins today.

  • waffles||

    Holy shit. Even Sugarfree couldn't pen this. What a disgusting fuck. How twisted do you have to be to think like this disgusting monster?

  • Diane Reynolds (Paul.)||

    Now his wife gets his pension for life.

    I don't think so.

    "Early Tuesday, Prince William police obtained a search warrant for Abbott’s townhouse on Senea Drive in Gainesville, where he lived with his mother."

    No jackass, his mother died years ago, but he dressed up in her clothes when he was home and took on her role. Her body, of course, was in his bed the whole time.

  • Deep Lurker||

    I don't find it incomprehensible at all. Real-world villains aren't monsters because they want the innocent to suffer; they're monsters because they have monsterous ideas about what counts as guilt.

    In this case, the monsterous ideas were (a) that a 17 year old taking a selfie of his own junk is "Sexually exploiting an innocent child!!!" and (b) "If a cop does it, it's not a crime."

  • Jerryskids||

    Now aren't you people sorry you wasted all your cop-bashing vitriol on the article just below this one?

    I keep an emergency supply of cop-bashing vitriol handy for just such an occasion.

    There is no such thing as peak cop-bashing vitriol.

    Why is it certainly a tragedy for the family? Some families are better off splitting up.

  • Zeb||

    OK, probably a tragedy for the family.

    Assuming they didn't know he was a pedophile, they get the double tragedy of finding out he was a terrible pervert and his suicide all at once.

  • Careless||

    A 17 year old typically would not be in a pedophile's range.

  • ||

    RC, when that little voice in the back of your head starts whispering, you should listen. That joke didn't just materialize out of thin air. It was what everyones voice was whispering, thus the joke.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Called it.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    The teen’s family hired Alexandria civil rights lawyer Victor Glasberg, who notified Abbott, his department and the prosecutors in August of his intent to file a federal lawsuit over their handling of the case.

    So I imagine this was all going to come out during this lawsuit anyway, and they all knew it.

    And, of course, there's this gem:

    “This is a tragic and sad day for the Abbott family, the juvenile victims and their families, the Manassas City Police Department, and our community,” the Manassas City police said in a statement. “In spite of these recent developments regarding the serious allegations against him, we are grateful for the contributions Det. Abbott made during his time with Manassas City Police, to include the prosecution and conviction of hundreds of criminals. His family and peers request privacy during this time as we grieve and struggle to accept the realities of such a loss.”
  • Crusty Juggler||

    That blue shield holds up against pedophilia, too.

  • UCrawford||

    If the blue shield applies to murder, robbery, extortion, rape, and most other criminal acts, why wouldn't it apply to a brother officer who was diddling some teenagers who were probably making it all up and/or asking for it even if it did happen? /dirty cop logic

  • UCrawford||

    Although if the Manassas PD didn't realize that guy was probably a pedophile after he demanded the hospital forcibly drug a 17 year old and take pictures of his erect penis, then their HR department should probably consider adding an IQ test as an application requirement, because you'd have to be the dumbest fucking person in the world for that to not raise a major "pedophile" red flag. That was the first thought that occurred to me when I saw that story...especially since taking such a picture is actually creating child pornography. I've known a few cops who had to deal with child sexual abuse...none of them would even consider wanting to create additional naked kid pictures to stare at (because those cops I knew weren't pedophiles). They see plenty of that already on their job.

    Seriously, if that didn't get the attention of Internal Affairs (assuming it's not just a police union rubberstamp) or the local DA (who should know the law) then Manassas is being run by people of below-average intellectual capacity and they need to just start mass firing people

  • ||

    Sounds like you haven't had much contact with the cops.

    A friend of mine just called an hour ago. They had just gotten four tickets, one of which was for driving 40 in a 60. There is no posted minimum speed in La except for on one section of I20 in Monroe. My friend was stopped in Woodworth.

    So, cops sees someone driving slow and stops them thinking they are probably drinking. They aren't drinking. So, instead of sending them on their way he writes a slew of petty bullshit tickets that the court is going to throw out because he stopped the driver without cause.

    They aren't just dumb, they are ignorant of the law as well.

  • reasontert||

    Manassas is known locally as "Manasshole" for a reason.

  • Notorious UGCC||

    You know who else died in Manassas?

  • ||

    Amazing how much damage one evil person can do.

  • Vernon Depner||

    Best headline ever.

    BTW—Why would you have to give a 17-year-old an injection to give him a boner? All you have to do is wait a few minutes...

  • pan fried wylie||

    "Hellooo Nurse!"

  • John C. Randolph||

    There is no more sincere apology than suicide. I'd give him a few more style points if he'd done it with a wakizashi, but kudos to him anyway for leaning into that pitch and taking one for the team.

    -jcr

  • Deep Lurker||

    Not sincere enough. In this case I'd even be inclined to go along with the idea of putting him on trial anyway, despite his being dead.

    Although I would be prepared to accept his "sincere apology" if it gets used to fry the cops involved in police omerta here, by charging & convicting them under the felony-murder rule.

  • Brochettaward||

    Foster said Detective Abbott told her that after obtaining photos of the teen’s erect penis he would “use special software to compare pictures of this penis to this penis. Who does this? It’s just crazy.”

    Special penis matching software, guys! It was totally legit.

  • NealAppeal||

    The 'chubby' checker?

  • Michael Price||

    Well something is twisted.

  • The Last American Hero||

    And none of the fellow cops knew about his issues. Or suspected anything. Or reported anything. Or stood up and said you want to do what to a 17 year old suspect? No problems until federal prosecutors and family lawyers got involved.

    Sure.

  • Brochettaward||

    I thought they were all trained experts who could tell if someone was guilty of pedophilia just by looking at them like on Law and Order: SVU.

  • Kandralla||

    When you give a cop a gun and tell him his job is to enforce the law (as opposed to telling him his job is to protect the rights of the citizenry) why would they? He's doing the lords work, so what if he has some quirks; he puts people in jail and that's all that matters.

  • bacchys||

    They are told their job is to raise revenue.

  • burserker||

    this dude got promoted to detective, and then his job was to watch child porn. way to go Manassas PD! promoting pedophilia!

  • UCrawford||

    The options are that they're either too stupid to figure it out or too corrupt to care. In either case, Manassas would probably do well to look at just firing their entire police force and starting over.

  • AlmightyJB||

    Every pig involved in that original case is a pedophile and should be in prison.

  • ||

    Why did he commit suicide? Odds are he'd be acquitted, no? It seems that way.

  • sarcasmic||

    All he had to do was request a bench trial. A judge would have found a way to excuse his actions. After all, that's a judge's job.

    Like this one.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/.....story.html

    Even with the victim's DNA on the gun, the judge refused to believe a hero would stick it down someone's throat. Even with dozens of excessive force complaints. Oh, and the cop tazed the dude's nuts too. Back on the force with back-pay..

  • ||

    Montreal is pretty bad when it comes to fraud and corruption but man, judging by the headlines in the Tribune Chicago is downright insane.

  • UCrawford||

    Well, the Chicago PD were running a torture cell/black site in Homan Square and the city did absolutely nothing about that. The only reason the COP got fired was because Rahm Emanuel is trying to save his own ass right now...he doesn't care how brutal or incompetent his shitty police officers are.

  • Careless||

    Cops can get away with shooting people. Molesting kids? I think that's an entirely different ballpark

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    Yeah. This one wasn't going away.

  • Fredrick Douglas||

    Exactly, having government on your side isn't as good as having God on your side, amIright?

  • Karl Hungus||

    Why did he commit suicide? Odds are he'd be acquitted, no? It seems that way.

    Acquitted, yes; vindicated, no. When it comes to kiddie-diddler charges, even if you're acquitted, everyone you know will look askance at you for the rest of your life. Your life is effectively ruined.

  • Michael Price||

    Every so often the monster has to eat one of it's own. He knew his number was up. If they wanted to let him go they'd have covered it up beforehand, but it's too late. He knew he was going to be the sacrificial lamb.

    Clearly, Officer Pedophile was a victim.

    While this outcome is certainly a tragedy for his family, the revelations about Abbott should underscore two things: His treatment of the 17-year-old in the sexting case was unconscionable, and laws criminalizing sexting between teens are intrusive and easily abused.

    Also, that people who volunteer for a job that involves looking at child porn are either crusaders with some serious tolerance for nightmare fuel, or pedos. Maybe we should just let robots handle this one.

  • Fredrick Douglas||

    So whom do I email my cop-killing erection photos?

  • Hank Phillips||

    Send them to:
    Chrissy T Adams
    10th Circuit Solicitor's Office
    Seneca, South Carolina
    If she'd been on the case Abbott would still be diddling boys just like Lt Mark Tiller is back on the streets shooting them.

  • Michael Price||

    You can take my erection when you can pry it from my cold, head hands.

  • Hank Phillips||

    That's the problem with sexting... it can cause pederast cops to feel inadequate to the point of shooting themselves. Still, I wouldn't repeal the First Amendment on account of a single justified police shooting.
