If you're reading this, then the internet still works. But that's something that we shouldn't necessarily take for granted after this week's global cybersecurity meltdown.

"Think of it this way: someone discovered that millions of buildings in the country have the same broken lock, and now everyone knows how to open it," writes Matt Shumer in a lengthy post on X about the situation. "The lock maker has sent out a fix, but every building owner has to install it themselves, and many haven't yet."

That massive vulnerability was identified with the help of AI, but the growing capabilities of AI-powered hackers mean that vulnerabilities can be exploited much more rapidly too.

This is the world we live in now. In August, more than 100 tech companies signed a letter warning about exactly this possibility. On Thursday, one of Anthropic's top information security officers wrote that cybersecurity threats "are going to get a lot worse before they get better." Major banks are rushing to secure themselves after reports of autonomous agents operating inside accounts (though many of them may have been authorized by account holders).

This is unlikely to be the last incident like this. Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike says it saw twice as many "agentic intrusions" (hacking done by an autonomous or semiautonomous AI) in August as in July, and then the number doubled again in September.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Scary stuff, for sure. As is usually the case, however, prevention is better than panic.

Shumer's post contains many helpful suggestions for better online security—it is particularly important to secure your email accounts, since that is the gateway to so much of what we do online. Here's a 15-step plan to stay more digitally secure in the AI age. (And if you're really worried about everything falling to bits, Reason's got you covered there too.) If your devices and browsers have updates available, install them. And for the love of digital gods, don't click on random links in strange emails!

The man who (maybe) saved the internet? There is an old XKCD webcomic—and I'm dating myself as a very specific type of millennial by even referencing that—that seems to perfectly sum up what happened this week. Here it is:

Source: https://xkcd.com/2347

Here's the craziest part: That's basically true! Except the one random person lives in Czechia instead of Nebraska. His name is Ondřej Surý, and The Atlantic's Charlie Warzel found him:

Surý, who lives in Czechia, does not work for the PHP Foundation. But alongside his day job as director of domain-name-system engineering at the nonprofit Internet Systems Consortium, in a volunteer capacity, he maintains and helps automate patches for the coding language. His work, with that of just a handful of others, has allowed countless websites and organizations to fix these vulnerabilities quickly. Over the past 48 hours, he's become arguably the unsung hero of the entire internet—despite the fact that the only compensation he receives is from modest donations. "Ondřej will save the internet today," a user in the PHP Subreddit wrote.

In the war between AI hackers and AI defenders, it's still humans who are the heroes. At least for now.

Art of the steal. Yesterday, in this space, I detailed how voters are fed up with the Trump administration's seemingly endless stream of corruption. But it's been a whole 24 hours, which means there is yet another scandal in the news—thanks to a Vanity Fair article about President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The article is an excerpt from a forthcoming book. In it, author Matthew Cole claims that Dutch investigators gained access to Kushner's phone with the help of Russian hackers. The evidence from the phone and other sources shows that Kushner has been taking money from the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to "push their agenda with Trump."

Kushner says the article's claims are "outrageous and categorically false."

But wait, there's yet another corruption story. The Justice Department is reportedly probing whether Trump ally Corey Lewandowski profited from his role as a top adviser at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Washington Post reports that the investigation is based on a referral from the DHS inspector general and is focused on "contracting fraud."

It may or may not be connected to other allegations that surfaced in September, when The Wall Street Journal reported that Lewandowski approached officials in Qatar and the UAE about being hired to help with "visa issues" and other matters.

In both matters, Lewandowski has denied the allegations. He's no longer working for the department, having been fired earlier this year amid a messy scandal involving then–DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who was also canned.

Scenes from Virginia: Federal prosecutors indicted state Sen. L. Louise Lucas (D–Portsmouth), one of the most powerful Democrats in Virginia, on charges of racketeering and money laundering in connection with illegal marijuana sales. (Don't get me started on how dumb it is that recreational marijuana use has been legal here since 2021, but commercial sales are still forbidden. If it's legal to use something, it should be legal to sell it!)

Lucas pushed the failed Virginia redistricting effort and has been an outspoken critic of Trump. She plans to fight the charges. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, also a Democrat, said in a statement that the timing of the indictment, just days before the midterm elections, "further erodes the trust the American people deserve to have in the Department of Justice."

QUICK HITS

  • "The last thing José García-Sorto remembers after being shot in the chest is being pulled from his car, pinned to the pavement and handcuffed, his blood pooling around him on a Phoenix interstate. All he could think about was what would happen to his two young children if he died." The New York Times has a harrowing account of a Honduran immigrant who was shot by immigration officers last year. He's never been charged with a crime in connection with the incident, which suggests "the authorities did not find evidence that he had put anyone in danger."
  • Phil Magness and David Hebert debunk the notion that tariffs can help "infant industries" grow and succeed in a global market.
  • The Cato Institute's annual ranking of "Freedom in the 50 States" is out. Arizona takes the top spot. How did your state do?
  • Is alchemy real now? A California company claims it has successfully turned mercury into gold.
  • The World Series begins tonight, and it ought to be terrific. Despite low payrolls, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee were the top teams in their respective leagues this year. They are deep, talented teams full of characters worth cheering—Brewers' star pitcher Jacob Misiorowski is a huge Pokémon nerd; Rays' star hitter Yandy Diaz escaped from Cuba after being imprisoned there. And this is the first World Series since 1980 to match two franchises that have never won a championship.

NEW: Multiple federal sources confirm to
    @FoxNews
that the suspect arrested for using a sledgehammer to behead a WW2 Iwo Jima monument in Quantico, VA on Tuesday is a Mexican illegal alien & former DACA recipient whose legal status expired this year.

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano has now been charged with felony destruction of property and trespass with intent to damage property.

Per federal sources, Soriano illegally crossed into the U.S. in December 1999. He was granted DACA by the Obama administration in 2014 and had it extended for years, most recently by the Biden admin in 2024, but he lost his DACA status in August of this year when it wasn’t renewed by the Trump administration.

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 hours ago

I'm not supporting what he did, but I do want people to try to understand what has happened to him.

Just doing some quick math: He's currently 27 years old and he entered the country in 1999, so when he was just 1 year old. He can't really be held responsible for that action. He was granted DACA status in 2014, when he was 15 years old. He has been in this country virtually all of his life. I don't see anyone claiming he has any prior criminal record, so it appears that when he was old enough to make decisions for himself, he followed the rules. Why wasn't a guy like this given a pathway to at least permanent residency by now?

He lost his DACA status two months ago, so it sounds like he was about to be deported to Mexico, a country that to him is a totally foreign place. If that happened to you, how would you feel?

      1. Idaho-Bob   2 hours ago

I'm not supporting what he did

        Just making excuses.

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 hours ago

I would like you to attempt, for one moment, to put yourself in his shoes. Again, he entered the country when he was just 1 year old. No one has claimed that he has any sort of prior criminal record before this action, so it looks like he followed the rules when he was old enough to make decisions for himself. If you were about to be deported to a country that was foreign to you, after having lived here all of your life, how might you feel? Does he have a family - wife and children? Was he about to be separated from them? Again I'm not saying it's justified to take it out on a statue like this. Just for a moment to try to understand what he's going through. Can you do that?

          1. Don't look at me! ( Is the war over yet?)   1 hour ago

Circumstances like this call for hiring a lawyer, not buying a sledgehammer.

            1. chemjeff radical individualist   40 minutes ago

People are not one-dimensional caricatures. They are real living human beings with real complex lives, real capacity for rational thought, and real emotions. Trying to understand someone is not the same as making excuses for that person or defending that person's every action.

That is the real bigotry of the modern right. It isn't some Klan rally or something. It is this division of the world into "people like me" (complex, rational, compassionate people who require understanding and grace), and "people not like me" (one-dimensional cardboard cutouts who act like programmed robots).

              1. Idaho-Bob   31 minutes ago

And yet you defend and excuse the cardboard cutouts. The illegal cardboard cutouts.

                1. chemjeff radical individualist   21 minutes ago

And by "defend and excuse", what Idaho Bob really means is that I humanize them. That is what irritates you the most: I treat them as people, not as objects, not as faceless nameless "vermin and scum" like you all do. Why can't I just throw people away like the trash that they really are? Right?

            2. chemjeff radical individualist   35 minutes ago

And from your response, it is clear that you do recognize the value of trying to understand where a person is coming from (which some might call empathy, but I know that is a dirty word in your tribe), but you choose only to apply it to the people in your tribe. Why is that? Are the people outside of your tribe not worthy?

              1. Idaho-Bob   27 minutes ago

People in my tribe don't destroy (public) property when life gets rough. We lean on each other to get through the patch and move on. Like civilized westerners.

No one says "lets destroy grandpa's memorial" cuz I broke the law and am about to suffer the consequences.

Says the guy who is continually making excuses for his team. How many times have you tried to defend illegal behavior from this administration, and any attempt to prosecute it as "lawfare"?

          2. chemjeff radical individualist   1 hour ago

How many times have you made excuses for Republicans behaving badly, because "the other side does it too" (even when they don't)?

Just yesterday, you were claiming that Vivek's ad featuring Amy Acton's deadbeat mom was no worse than Acton's ad, that you claimed accused Vivek of killing some poor guy's wife. In fact, the ad claimed nothing of the sort. But you construct these types of false equivalences all the time in order to excuse your team behaving badly.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/minneapolis-restaurant-that-offered-free-meals-to-protest-ice-raids-announces-closure/ar-AA2fLAFu

Alverson previously announced on Instagram in January that his business, which rebranded as Post Modern Times, would operate as a "free and donation based restaurant" where everyone would be welcome "except ICE" in protest of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations happening in his state, in response partly to the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

The Modern Times Café operated without prices for about six months until it briefly closed in July. The establishment returned to using prices once the store reopened in August but announced that it would continue serving 25 free meals per day.

By October, Alverson told The New York Times that he was operating under a "zero profit margin," hoping that his place could be used as a model for other restaurants.

However, he acknowledged that the process was taxing for his staff and led to customers waiting up to two hours for a meal, half of which would usually be given for free. Neighbors also expressed concerns that homeless and drug-addicted people would take advantage of the offer.

Third polling firm drops after being called out for fake polling, again used by democrat campaigns and dem aligned media.

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2026/10/socal-strategies-drops-offline-after-questions-emerge-about-wedgewood-polls-ties/

Even more strange the requirements of how to trick dem media into acceptance.

This makes sense to us. In 2024, when SoCal Strategies first began publishing polls (originally under the name “SoCal Research”), members of the FiftyPlusOne staff vetted them for FiveThirtyEight. At the time, we were told Rochford, then a high school student, was conducting the surveys and had previous experience as an intern with Probolsky Research. We confirmed that detail with a representative for Probolsky, reviewed their methodology statement, and began aggregating their surveys.

The vetting of accuracy was confirming he was a HS student who interned at a different pollster. Thats it.

This is the third one. All positive to democrats. Also in discovery...

    AG
    @AGHamilton29
So the polling scandals becoming a real issue. In the last week, we have discovered:

    - 1 polling company made up fake polls in several races

    - another polling company took money from a candidate without disclosing and then simply switched votes in their poll to give that candidate an edge

    - yet another polling company took money from that same candidate without disclosing.

All of this stuff drove news stories and public commentary. It also affected betting markets.

Also turns out during Michigan primaries a dem candidate dropped out after a false wedgewood poll was released and pushed by NYT.

Here's the craziest part: That's basically true! Except the one random person lives in Czechia instead of Nebraska.

That's not the craziest part. The craziest part is that the "BORDURZ IZ KONSTRUKTZ!" retards don't (seem to) understand that Munroe didn't just make the cartoon in 2003 whole cloth. It was true then and, absent AI, it's been true 7-8 conspicuous times since then.

It’s a man made thing, it’s going to contain flaws.

      1. mad.casual   1 hour ago

And, "abstract social constructs", the crazy guy building Temple OS in his basement in Vegas using HolyC is, literally and figuratively, going to see things that everyone clustered together in Silicon Valley don't. Treating him as an adversary doesn't make the flaws go away.

Mass immigration, even prolonged, doesn't deepen knowledge and understanding. It can and does dilute and obscure it. More declassified documents show Biden DoJ used visa powers to block a witness from testifying against the Bidens.

Specifically, the memos show that the FBI and State Department rushed to block former Ukraine embassy aide Andrii Telizhenko's arrival in the United States just as he was to be interviewed by Sens. Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley in September 2020.

Instead of testifying, the Ukrainian government official once trusted by the Obama administration was sanctioned for being painted as a possible unwitting purveyor of Russian smears against the Biden family.

The agencies argued that Telizhenko was spreading false claims that Hunter Biden's service on Burisma's board of directors had impacted U.S. policy fighting corruption in Ukraine and that Joe Biden had changed U.S. policy when he withheld $1 billion to force the firing of Ukraine's chief prosecutor who was investigating , the memos show.

Article here basically recaps the Wired article.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/americans-who-fled-to-europe-to-escape-trump-quickly-realized-they-made-a-big-mistake/ar-AA2fP5b1

    https://x.com/WIRED/status/2112490978908975458

The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean.

After Annie and her husband arrived in the U.K., they soon realized that, despite the propaganda that had been fed to them by their fellow know-nothing leftists, life in England is not easy.

"There are huge misconceptions about access to quality health care, standard of living… the quality of life is significantly lower than in the US," Annie admitted to Wired.

"Things in the UK that are considered luxury items [such as dishwashers and dryers] are very common [in the U.S.]."

Speaking specifically about healthcare in the U.K., Annie noted that she has to pay "huge amounts of taxes and an immigration surcharge" just to access the country's semi-socialized system that leftists like to call "free."

"So no, the health care is not free here," she added.

Annie and her husband also discovered that the Brits can at times evidently be a bunch of uppity jerks who routinely mock and denigrate American culture -- which, ironically, is something American Democrats also do all the time.

"I found it particularly surprising how people feel so comfortable mocking my accent and culture, even in a workplace environment," she told Wired.

ATLANTA — An Atlanta, Georgia Instagram star with more than 2 million followers has been federally indicted and accused of defrauding the government out of over $4 million in SNAP benefits.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta on Wednesday announced charges against 39-year-old Mercedes New, a.k.a. Shawty Dred, that include 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of SNAP fraud and one count of illegal transactions with access devices.

    https://www.newsweek.com/french-students-play-rap-song-referencing-jihadists-protests-12540713

A rap song referencing jihadists involved in deadly attacks in France has appeared in videos filmed during student protests at a French high school and at a church.

The track, "MRH" by rapper BORO700, references Mohamed Merah, who killed a teacher and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse in 2012, and Salah Abdeslam, who was convicted for his role in the November 2015 Paris attacks. The lyrics also refer to the Bataclan concert hall, where 90 people were killed.

One video circulating on social media shows students singing the track at François-Villon high school in Beaugency, in the Loiret region, during a school blockade on October 1.

    Just crazy.

a new audit that examined the records of foreign-born federal judges – including one Biden appointee who was born in Mexico and was found to have ruled against border-enforcement policies an eye-popping 93 percent of the time – along comes that very same judge to hand the Trump administration yet another election integrity setback.

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín on Wednesday ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to halt certain investigations the agency is conducting into suspected illegal voting in nine states, including several key battlegrounds.

    https://redstate.com/terichristoph/2026/10/22/biden-judge-blocks-dhs-voter-fraud-probes-in-nine-states-just-days-before-the-midterms-n2208493

Few issues here. Foreign born judge using his power to help the country he left.

But also leftist and activist judges continue to block reforms to investigate any and all voter fraud.

Recently scotus even had to overrule a judge who tried to block a NH law about using student ID, despite admitting student ID has no vetting process for citizenship and doesnt even verify residency.

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   1 hour ago

Why does "foreign born" matter here, in this context?

Do you think we should be instinctively suspicious of those who are "foreign born", even if they are naturalized citizens?

My god, how stupid are you?

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   57 minutes ago

Yeah we all know the answer to the question. Just like Tommy's question to Abdul, you instinctively think that if someone "seems foreign" in some way (is Muslim, was foreign born, has a weird name), then that person necessarily must have dual loyalties and can't be trusted, even if that person is a naturalized American citizen.

for you all, "American-ness" isn't determined by citizenship status, it is determined by blood and soil. got it.

A 27-year-old miscreant who was in the US illegally allegedly beheaded one of the soldiers on the Iwo Jima statue at the Marine Corps Base Quantico with a sledgehammer — causing an estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, was caught by cops hacking at the replica of the famous World War II US Marine flag-raising at the Virginia base at around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night, Fox 5 DC reported, citing police.

The specific turn of phrase is also an age old sleight of hand. We've been transmuting elements for almost 100 yrs. and turning any number of things into gold has been understood to be possible since then. The issue has always been scale and/or efficiency.

A California company claims it has successfully turned mercury into gold.

No, it proposed a method for turning mercury into gold. There are all sorts of nuclear methods for transmuting other elements into gold. This one, like all the others, is unlikely to work because of the huge costs involved in doing so, which would far exceed the value of the gold produced as a result. It would require an enormous amount of energy, it would only work on one specific isotope of mercury so all of the others would have to be separated away (which is not easy), OR use naturally occurring mercury and wait for all of the unstable radioactive isotopes produced by all of the other mercury isotopes decay away, probably for many many years.

The chair of the El Paso County Republican Party has said he intends to sue Sacha Baron Cohen over footage of the local politician used in new satirical comedy Ali G: Who Iz I?

In the film, Michael Aboud is shown taking part in a training programme with another Cohen character, ex-Mossad terrorist expert Col Erran Morad, who instructs Aboud and fellow Maga sympathisers in self-defence techniques including the wearing, over clothes, of protective plastic buttocks. He also schools them in how to fire bullets from the middle of these buttocks by the repeated up and down manipulation of a rubber penis.

Aboud and a fellow student, former preacher and aspirant actor Joshua Loudermilk, are then recruited by Morad to help in a mission to prevent the birth in the US of the baby of a (fictional) South American drugs kingpin.

This involves Aboud and Loudermilk abducting his heavily-pregnant girlfriend and driving her in a phoney ambulance to a remote unstaffed medical facility, where she gives birth (to a lifelike prosthetic).
