President Donald Trump and Alina Habba, his former personal defense attorney, at the White House in 2025. (Bonnie Cash - Pool via CNP / MEGA / Newscom/RSSIL/Newscom)

An uncanny strength of the second Trump administration has been its ability to be involved in so many scandals that no single one seems to become a dominant story.

Take the most recent allegations about Alina Habba, Trump's former personal defense attorney, who recently landed a plush gig working for Julio Herrera Velutini, a Venezuelan banker. Habba will get $50 million over five years to do unspecified work for a company that barely exists, according to The New York Times, while Herrera got a presidential pardon for a 2025 campaign finance charge.

That's just a typical day for the current White House, where the mingling of personal and public business has become routine. Some days, the story is President Donald Trump trying to help himself to taxpayer funds by suing the government he runs, or shipping billions of taxpayer dollars to a foreign mining company partially owned by his sons. Other times, it is Trump selling political influence in the form of digital coins, or his appointees getting caught in naked pay-to-play schemes. If you have a hard time keeping track of it all, I get it. The corruption is so deep and wide that focusing on any singular item becomes difficult.

But that constellation of corruption might finally be breaking through to voters ahead of next month's midterm elections.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

A recent Fox News poll found that "government corruption" was the top issue for voters, ranking ahead of inflation and gas prices. Conservative commentators are taking notice.

"What they're saying is, 'Look, we're tired of you getting rich and us getting poor,'" former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said this week.

Tim Carney, senior columnist at the conservative Washington Examiner, also tabs the corruption issue—along with other "avoidable mistakes" such as the Iran War and tariffs—as one of the major reasons why Democrats are likely to win the midterms:

Trump and his family have enriched themselves in this second term in ways more similar to third-world regimes or Cook County than to any previous administration. He and his family operate a financial company that has received heavy investments from Qatar's government. He's sold access to himself by selling otherwise worthless cryptocurrency. The IRS he controls settled a lawsuit with him, promising to pay him $1.8 billion (this settlement was voided by a judge).

Trump is not directly on the ballot next month, of course. And most voters might not be able to tell you the details of any single Trump scandal in detail. Even so, this may turn out to be the defining narrative of the second Trump administration, and there seems to be a growing consensus that Republicans have allowed (if not aided and abetted) his corrupt behavior, so it's time to give Democrats a shot at reining it in.

The Trump corruption issue is like the Biden cognitive decline issue in one key sense: Everyone around the president or even supporting him professionally from afar should be asked about it, and their lies/claims of ignorance should be hung around their necks like dumbbells.

— Matt Welch (@MattWelch) October 20, 2026

Vice President J.D. Vance told journalist Mark Halperin this week that he's "never seen any evidence that anybody's selling access to the president." When Halperin pushed back, Vance doubled down: "What I would say is I don't think there's evidence that the Trump family has become enriched by politics," the vice president said.

So either Vance isn't paying attention, or he's deliberately misleading. "Credit to Vance, it's as good an argument as is available to him," writes Daniel Foster at National Review. "The bad news is it's still not very good."

The internet nearly crashed on Wednesday as digital security and website administrators scrambled to patch two vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language that serves as the basis for many websites.

"Since its development in the 1990s, PHP has evolved into an essential scripting language for web development and is used across vast swaths of the internet in websites and software," explains Wired. "Everything from publishing systems like WordPress and Drupal to e-commerce platforms like Adobe's Magento are built on PHP."

Amid fears that hackers and AI agents could exploit the security weakness, many websites were taken offline. The National Security Agency and its counterparts in the United Kingdom and the European Union sounded the alarm. Even the prime minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, was telling website administrators to take the issue seriously.

The potential hacking abilities of advanced AI agents make these sorts of security risks more serious. In this case, however, the problem was also identified with the help of AI.

"Ryan Austin, a researcher at Calif, uncovered the flaws with help from GPT-5.6 Sol, one of OpenAI's most advanced models, during an audit of PHP's source code in August," The Wall Street Journal reports. Another security researcher had flagged the issue years ago, but it had never been fixed because it was considered "considered too difficult to exploit" by human hackers.

This is the future of humanity's digital landscape. "Given the severity of these flaws and PHP's widespread use, we consider this one of the most impactful security issues in recent memory," OpenAI said in a statement on Wednesday. "It highlights how AI can uncover security flaws with internet-scale impact, but the same capabilities can also help attackers rapidly develop offensive tools and exploits."

(A shoutout to Reason's web development team for keeping us up and running, today and every day.)

"Fanciful fiction." Media outlets also continue to face decidedly nondigital threats over articles and polls that make the president unhappy.

The White House threatened Politico on Wednesday with unspecified "consequences" for publishing "fanciful fiction" in a series of articles earlier this month about White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. If the articles are not retracted, it would trigger "an immediate review of Politico's relationship with the White House, and, of course, consideration of all other appropriate and available legal remedies," wrote White House counsel William O. Scharf in a letter to the media outlet's publisher.

Meanwhile, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr issued vague threats to broadcasters who cover what Carr called "Fake Polls" intended to "alter the normal patterns of voter turnout and enthusiasm."

These sorts of threats are an affront to the First Amendment, of course. But they are downstream of a more significant issue: the very existence of the FCC.

It's a problem, obviously, that the FCC is run by an authoritarian jackass. But the bigger problem is that the agency contains so many tempting tools for an authoritarian jackass to wield. https://t.co/Q4IJXntkOy

QUICK HITS

  • A judge in New Mexico ordered social media giant Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram, among other things) to pay $25 billion for misleading users about data privacy. Last month, a jury found that Meta had violated the state's consumer protection laws 43 million times.
  • Officials are trying to pin the blame on Elon Musk for a Starlink slowdown that limited the effectiveness of Ukrainian missile defenses. Musk says the decision was made by the U.S. military and Trump.
  • Peter Thiel joins the majority of Americans in thinking that Trump's Iran War was a mistake. Even so, the U.S. and Israel are reportedly planning another round of attacks after the election.
  • The environmental studies for California's high-speed rail line include such absurdities as counting bumblebees "one by one" and considering the train's "acoustic impacts on waterfowl and shorebirds." That's how to spend 16 years and $15 billion building nearly nothing.
  • Obvious metaphor alert!

A group dispatched by Hegseth's team in February attempted to move the historic globe, said to be used by Eisenhower during World War II.

An uncanny strength of the second Trump administration has been its ability to be involved in so many scandals that no single one seems to become a dominant story.

It's not the president's fault if the press has the focus of a cat in a laser pointer store.

    1. Spiritus Mundi   2 hours ago

All the 'scandals' turn out to be wishcasting by liberal news outlets trying to cast aspersions on his administration.

Cf. 'the walls are closing in!'

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

The press would never lie to Eric. He believes every scandal is real and existential. He has a degree in believing.

      2. windycityattorney   1 hour ago

Maybe Trump should create a new memecoin called 'wishcasting' so he can fleece another 800million from his delusional supporters.

I know books are out of fashion but for fks sake read something. Or simply pay attention. The corruption is so obvious and brazen that it would take some real effort to somehow be oblivious to it.

Are you going to praise the president for donating his salary too? I donated 300k! And spent 87million golfing at my own resorts.

        1. But SkyNet is a Private Company   57 minutes ago

You think the 87m went to the resort? Are you that stupid?

Are you saying Obama and Clinton didn’t hold, and had no security when they did?

          1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   53 minutes ago

The Clinton Foundation was honest and clean to him dammit.

        2. JesseAz (RIP CK)   53 minutes ago

Ironically you call out books given the decades long laundering of payments to democrats with book deals.

    2. Murray Rothtard   1 hour ago

It was actually a intentionally planned scheme before he evrn took office. Bannon called it "flood the zone" and the entire concept is to do so much horrible shit that it's impossible for opponents to focus on any one thing, and you sound crazy if you bring them all up at once.

I hate the man, but i have to give him credit, it seems like this was a stroke of evil genius.

Im unwilling to credit the media for making him engage in unparralelled corruption.

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   52 minutes ago

Hey buddy, how much of the supposed corruption is real vs media manufactured? Want to count up each side?

I mean ABC had a silent retraction just 3 weeks ago about corruption that had Lucky Palmer fuming. Bet you believed that story too.

Or is people freely buying a meme coin not a free market choice?

        1. Murray Rothtard   23 minutes ago

the largest buyers of the coins literally got invited to a private dinner with the president. the ONLY point of buying the coin is buying direct access to the president. after that dinner, he literally gave a pardon to Changpeng Zhao for giving him money. this is only one of the many pardons he has sold.

He's going for round two now. All the biggest buyers are foreign. Fun stuff.

it's all out in the open man. sorry you gouged your own eyes out.

        2. Murray Rothtard   17 minutes ago

i should also point out that "media manufactured" corruption, when you can find it, does not cancel out real and actual corruption.

If Trump has 10 instances of real terrible corruption, and the media manufactures 20 instances of fake corruption, this doesn't make Trump's corruption level -10. It's still fucking 10. He still did awful things no matter how crazy the media gets on top of that.

      2. JesseAz (RIP CK)   45 minutes ago

So im going to go into this more because you pretend to be a libertarian. Do want to see your rationalization.

George Washington sold goods loke tobacco. He participated in markets as president. He didnt force people or is power to influence that market choice.

Meme coins, stupid or not, are market goods. People freely choose to purchase. They aren't promised government benefits for buying any.

Yet this seems to be the focus of the corruption claims you and the other leftists are making.

So be clear. Can you a) define corruption and b) show where he traded power for benefit?

We know the clinton foundation did as government contracts went to their donors. Can you provide an example to that level?

        1. Ron   10 minutes ago

Hey at least he didn't give away 20% of our Uranium to Putin who then gave the Clinton foundation $150 mil. i think the left is just jealous that Trump is better at iy than they ever dreamed of

          1. Murray Rothtard   1 minute ago

the weird thing is that magtards are genuinely PROUD that Trump is better at corruption than the Clintons.

This isn't the kind of competition we are supposed to cheer on. We should all be severely disgusted by both the Clintons and Trump.

    3. Juliana Frink   1 hour ago

Yes, such a pity that a daily barrage of nothing burgers fails to yield a dominant scandal. Yawn.

  2. Fist of Etiquette   2 hours ago

Habba will get $50 million over five years to do unspecified work for a company that barely exists...

Wake me when she's selling artwork made from her own feces.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   1 hour ago

What about empty wine barrels like Ilhan?

  3. Fist of Etiquette   2 hours ago

Some days, the story is President Donald Trump trying to help himself to taxpayer funds by suing the government he runs...

Oh, I guess we're for unqualified immunity for government actors now. No redress of grievances for you, Mister President!

    1. Fist of Etiquette   2 hours ago

Yes, this is a ridiculous comment, even for me. But for fuck sake, do we actually think Trump is more corrupt than the jokers that came before him? The previous administration alone had a sitting president who was visibly unfit yet journalists were remarkably incurious. That is a scandal that the Trump administration would be hard-pressed to match (try as it might). If only they all got the same microscope we would be surprised to find how consistent all of this is.

      1. Spiritus Mundi   1 hour ago

If the previous administration were corrupt we would know about it!!!

        1. mad.casual   1 hour ago

Even without the previous administration, for all the MKUltras, Guatemalan Syphilis Experiments, COINTELPROs, Watergates, Whitewaters, Iran-Contras, and even things like Cuban Missile Crises, Welch is showing his ass on this.

      2. Zeb   1 hour ago

As with most things Trump, the biggest difference is style and a DGAF attitude. Everyone knows that politicians tend to get rich if they have much of a political career. It's no secret that they enrich themselves with special access and information that is available to people in those positions. I'm pretty disappointed in Trump part 2, but it's hardly a gam changing level of corruption and fuckups. Still better than the alternative. And is shaking some things up that needed shaking.

If the CoNstALLatIOn of democrat FRAUD was widely reported as the CORRUPTION it truly is, maybe the voters would send all the democrats packing.

  5. Fist of Etiquette   2 hours ago

And most voters might not be able to tell you the details of any single Trump scandal in detail.

They just know that he called white supremacists "good people" because that's what good ol' reliable Anderson Cooper told them.

For someone who lives by the media and public relations, Trump's been doing a piss poor job. Maybe the midterms will come out in his favor, maybe not. But he's sure not been helping himself in the PR department. The only question is whether the Democrats have been doing worse enough to counter the usual "throw the bums out" midterm voter attitude.

    1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 hours ago

The only thing Republicans have right now is "be afraid that Democrats are going to trans your kids". Trump claims that kids go to school as Tommy and come home as Thelma or some such. They laughably try to claim that high gas prices are the result of the war in Ukraine, or the "Green New Deal", when we all observed a very direct correlation between the start of the war in Iran, and the jump in gas prices.

In fact, the Republicans have gone so far as to try to generate fake trans advocacy groups in order to scare parents.

      https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2026/10/21/who-is-behind-the-fake-transgender-brochures-kprc-2-goes-looking-for-answers/

      https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/transgender-student-guide-sent-to-texans-by-wyoming-llc/

It's just disgusting and sad. They have nothing except scapegoating trans people. That is literally all they are running on at this point.

Ha Ha yeah, the world rotates around mentally ill people.

      2. Moderation4ever   1 hour ago

Trump is able to scare MAGAs that their kids will have a gender reassignment. The fact it more likely their kid will come home in a body bag from a school shooting than to have their gender reassigned at school.

It is funny seeing this as your take, likely just because Reason said it, after 10 years of media saying anything and everything no matter how true.

      Trump Russia.
      Ukraine impeachment
      J6 lies
      Bloodbath
      Sithole countries
      Disrespect of dead soldiers
      And on and on

As if the media doesnt over protest and invent stories against trump and conservatives all the time. Yet now people have woken up just this election cycle as polls collapse and pollsters admit to fake data. Lol.

But you fell for tariffpocalypse too.

      1. Stupid Government Tricks   51 minutes ago

Oh, tariffs? You finally remembered Trump's tariffs?

        1. They were not taxes.
        2. But foreigners paid them.
        3. But they lowered prices so Americans didn't notice paying them.
        4. They didn't raise prices.
        5. But they raised prices enough for domestic producers to make a profit.
        6. They were high enough to replace income tax revenue.
        7. But that required such a high rate that there were less imports.
        8. And since Americans paid the tariffs, they were taxing themselves to enrich themselves.

Yeah, I'm glad you remembered Donnie's tariffs.

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   40 minutes ago

          1. Strawman, nobody ever said this
          2. Is what happened, see CPI data. But I forget you never understood that the importers were owned by the foreign companies. Even if not counting this 40% was from lower import prices, see PPI
          3. Just a retarded lie nobody made lol. Getting desperate buddy.
          4. Hey another lie. There was no signal on CPI data buddy. Show us the signal.
          5. Not even sure what the fuck you are saying here. My guess is youre stupidly ignoring domestic investments but claiming because factories werent built in 30 days it didnt happen.
          6. Tax cut extensions passed right? Then courts stepped in right? So what the fuck are you saying here?
          7. Now youre just babbling.
          8. Lol. Shit conclusion based on ignorance to data and reality.

Counter point for you buddy. Where is the signal in the CPI data? You and economists were expecting 5 to 6% inflation, but there wasn't even a fucking signal any month lol. GDP didnt collapse. PPI didnt collapse. It got so bad you retards had to start pointing to suit like mom and pop silk tie makers.

Yet despite easily discovered data, you refuse to change your incorrect initial premises. It is hilarious.

          Stay retarded sarc Jr.

  8. chemjeff radical individualist   2 hours ago

Look, Reason. You said absolutely nothing when it came to Hunter Biden selling access to his dad via Burisma. You said absolutely nothing when it came to Hunter Biden selling phony paintings. In fact you actively supported both of these things. Therefore you do not get to complain about Trump's much bigger corruption. In fact, based on the NEW RULES, everything that Democrats do, Republicans get to do as well, including illegal and unethical behavior. Because that is JUSTICE. So Trump gets to sell pardons, Trump and his family and his associates get to make millions and billions off of the government and that is the CORRECT outcome. And if/when Democrats retake control of the presidency again, then and only then will corruption become a problem requiring widespread clutching of pearls.

Ireland confronts the doubling of rapes, fueled by migrants, by warning Irish grandparents to ask for consent to hug their grandchildren.

Ireland confronts the doubling of rapes, fueled by migrants,

There is no statistical evidence which supports this claim.

      https://x.com/SnDMediaNews/status/2018994934422921481

Critics and commentators have asked whether Ireland’s exceptionally high migration intake could be linked to the elevated sexual offence recordings. Unlike many EU countries, Ireland does not publish detailed breakdowns of sexual offence suspects or convictions by nationality or migrant background, making direct analysis impossible here.

There are, however, lots of high-profile anecdotes and lots of scapegoating going on.

Oh wait, I know - you're just "noticing". Actually, your "noticing" is nothing more than stereotyping. You're not making dispassionate empirical observations, you are imposing your bigoted xenophobic narrative onto your "noticing" to generate your preferred outcome.

      1. Zeb   1 hour ago

It would be much better if there were more data to back it up. But it's not totally unreasonable to observe that this has happened at the same time that a lot of people from cultures that have considerably less respect for women's rights and autonomy than the existing Irish population.
At the very least, this seems like something to try to get better data on. Adding a large migrant population from very different cultures is a huge social experiment. If they are going to do that, or allow it to happen, you'd think they should examine the effects in more detail. But it seems like they refuse to look at it at all.

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   53 minutes ago

But it's not totally unreasonable to observe that this has happened at the same time that a lot of people from cultures that have considerably less respect for women's rights and autonomy than the existing Irish population.

If you're going to be doing some "observing", then observe all of it. What has ALSO happened is that in most European nations, the legal standard of rape also changed, making the category broader. What has ALSO happened is that more resources were devoted to prosecuting crimes of sexual violence, because of #MeToo and Weinstein, which leads to higher numbers of reported rapes but not necessarily more actual rapes.

This is actually a difficult problem but the xenophobic demagogues like Jesse and his pals don't want you to "notice" any of the other stuff. In fact, when there is some type of high-quality academic study which attempts to analyze these problems more fully, and the study doesn't produce the result that the Jesses are looking for, they are likely to dismiss the study as "libruls defending immigrant rapists". They only want you to "notice" their transformation of a correlation into a causation to serve their bigoted purposes. Understand that this is what is going on here.

          1. Zeb   45 minutes ago

I'd say both sides have their biases here. Yes, some presume that it can all be blamed on immigrants. Others bend over backwards to avoid having to say that migration makes up any significant contribution to an increase in rapes (or reported rapes). I'd like to see a more dispassionate analysis of it all. But I don't see much of that happening on either side of the argument.

            1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   34 minutes ago

I didn't claim "all" either. But Jesse & co. definitely are claiming that, broadly, the immigrants themselves are the problem.

I tried finding britain. And the data holds for migrant sexual assault arrest numbers, but not convictions. But this is also the country that buried the immigrant child rape scandal on Rotterham

          1. chemjeff radical individualist   7 minutes ago

Let's take Jesse's first link above. Yes, immigrants are over-represented in the rape statistics in Germany. That is true! Now comes the explanation. The xenophobes like Jesse would have you believe it's because the immigrants are just terrible people who do horrible things like commit rape because that's just who they are. They are inferior to civilized Western people who don't rape women out of habit.

They won't point out other explanations, such as: are immigrants over-represented in the rape statistics because more police resources are focused in immigrant communities as opposed to elsewhere? Are immigrants over-represented in the rape statistics because the German definition of rape is much broader than what the immigrant normally understands as the definition of "rape" based on that immigrant's home culture? That is, would an immigrant who, say, performed nonconsensual kissing be charged with "rape" in Germany, when in the person's home country, that would not be? Finally, one must also consider the power imbalance between native citizens and immigrants. A native citizen who goes to the police to report the crime of rape can be confident that the police will not deport the citizen and his/her family to some foreign country as an unintentional result. The same cannot be said of the immigrant. The immigrant who is the victim of rape might not feel the same level of comfort approaching the police in Germany for fear of what might unintentionally happen to his/her family as a result. Or it could be that the immigrant is living among a local German culture that is dismissive or hostile towards them, and so they might feel like going to the police is a waste of time, they wouldn't receive justice anyway. So if this is the case, rapes in which citizens are perpetrators and immigrants are victims would be undercounted in the statistics, and it would appear as if immigrants as the perpetrators are over-represented.

But, none of these other explanations are even considered by the "just noticing" crowd, they insist that you use only their set of biased observations and their set of foregone conclusions - immigrants are the problem! - and if you disagree then it must only mean that you support rape and apologize for rape when it's done by immigrants. This is because their conclusions are not based on data or facts or reason, it is based on emotion and outrage against the immigrants themselves.

    2. chemjeff radical individualist   1 hour ago

Just admit it: you're scapegoating migrants because you think they are inferior scum and vermin.

Similar shares supported restricting publicly funded services for non-citizens and non-residents, as well as imposing waiting periods or additional fees on temporary residents seeking health benefits. This last issue marks a major departure in a country where universal health care is a defining feature of national identity.

Election security. An even clearer majority of Albertans, roughly 63%, supported requiring voters to present a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card to vote in provincial elections. US Attorney Leah Foley during a press conference in Boston said the scheme's alleged mastermind, Jennifer Gonzalez, helped organize sham marriages for over a decade in Massachusetts, a Democratic-led state the defendant described as a "sanctuary" jurisdiction where "you get a lot of help as an immigrant."

It marked the latest such case by the US Department of Justice as part of Republican President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. In August, it brought one of the largest such cases when in New York it charged 11 people over a scheme prosecutors said facilitated about 1,000 sham marriages.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/the-gop-has-one-big-reason-to-be-optimistic-about-the-midterms-opinion/ar-AA2fJdfO

But there's one big reason for Republican optimism – the unshakable faith among many of us that even voters unhappy with the GOP will be guided by a deep-rooted patriotism that refuses to reward a party increasingly enamored of socialism.

I love this implicit assumption that patriotism necessarily requires voting for Republicans. It's actually quite disgusting. Republican "patriotism" is mostly shallow and symbolic, and when it is not, it is rooted in chest-thumping acts of military strength. "Republican patriotism" is more about wearing the correct flag lapel pin and stopping people from burning flags, than about actually reading and believing in the foundational revolutionary documents of this nation. How many Republicans will in one breath insist that everyone obey the same ritual when it comes to the Pledge of Allegiance, but in the very next breath, advocate for mixing of Christianity and state, or taking away meaningful due process from immigrants, or endorsing whatever Trump does because "he means well"? They aren't patriots. They are shallow charlatans. And in the other extreme, they launch wars of choice to demonstrate American power, which ultimately just makes us weaker and is contrary to what the Founding Fathers would have wanted for our nation - they didn't want America to be prominent on the world stage throwing our weight around. But that is "Republican patriotism" for you.

Real patriotism means deeply adhering to the principles of individual liberty for all, to believe "All men are created equal" and really mean it.
