Trump Bashed Other Countries for Their Immigrant Crime Rates. Here's Why He Didn't Mention the U.S.
Trump railed against migrant crime abroad but skipped U.S. stats—because immigrants here are locked up far less often than native-born Americans.

The Cato Institute's Alex Nowrasteh and Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward debate National Review's Rich Lowry and Steven Camarota from the Center for Immigration Studies on the benefits and drawbacks of mass immigration. Thursday, October 2, live on stage in Washington, D.C. Get your tickets here.
President Donald Trump's recent appearance at the 80th United Nations General Assembly was in the news because he was temporarily stranded on a broken escalator, and a teleprompter gave out during his speech. Those momentary inconveniences distracted from the content of his speech, which revealed an important truth about immigration—through omission.
Trump criticized many countries for allowing immigration that was supposedly destroying their countries. "According to the Council of Europe, in 2024, almost 50 percent of inmates in German prisons were foreign nationals or migrants," he said. "In Austria, the number was 53 percent. In Greece, the number was 54 percent. In Switzerland, it's 72 percent."
Did you notice which country he didn't mention? Donald J. Trump, the man elected president by complaining about immigrants bringing crime to these shores, didn't point to high immigrant incarceration rates in the United States. That's because immigrant incarceration rates are low in the U.S.—far below those of native-born Americans. There were no numbers for him to appeal to. Through omission, Trump admitted that his potent criticism of immigration, used to such effect on the campaign trail, rests on a cracked foundation.
That's not to say that immigrants don't sometimes commit crimes in the United States. The murders of Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray by illegal immigrants were brutal crimes that galvanized voters and Trump's campaign. They and their families deserve justice, but many voters got the impression that illegal immigrants are mostly violent criminals and that Trump would clean up the mess. Tragic individual crimes aside, illegal immigrants are much less likely to be criminals than native-born Americans.
The American federal system means that most criminal laws and their enforcement are on the state level. Texas is one of the few states that identifies both legal and illegal immigrants through the criminal justice system. Crime data from Texas show legal and illegal immigrants had criminal conviction rates 58 percent and 48 percent lower than native-born Americans, respectively. In 2022, legal immigrants had a homicide conviction rate 62 percent below that of native-born Americans, and illegal immigrants were 36 percent below.
For studying immigrant criminality, you can't do much better than focusing on Texas: It borders Mexico, has the second-largest illegal immigrant population of any state, and it'd be hard for all but the most committed populist to claim there's a conspiracy in the state's Republican-dominated government to suppress evidence of immigrant criminality.
Texas is just one state, but nationwide estimates also show that legal and illegal immigrants have a much lower incarceration rate than native-born Americans. The difference is so great that native-born Americans are 267 percent more likely to have been incarcerated by age 33 than all immigrants.
The data showing low immigrant criminality are underscored by how badly Trump's deportation plans are stalling. The administration assumed that immigrant criminality would make it particularly easy to identify and deport them. "The worst of the worst," was the term used by Trump's border czar Tom Homan, who's having trouble meeting deportation targets because there just aren't that many illegal immigrant criminals. If there were, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents could just wait at police stations and jails instead of ambushing immigrants attending their court hearings and raiding warehouses, restaurants, and car assembly plants.
It's worth mentioning that Homan was recently investigated for allegedly accepting a $50,000 cash bribe offered by FBI agents, but Trump's Department of Justice isn't prosecuting the case. This administration's lead team of immigration enforcers may yet end up with a higher criminal conviction rate than illegal immigrants.
It's refreshing to hear the president implicitly admit that immigrants have a lower crime rate in the United States—after all, Americans didn't vote for Trump because of immigrant incarceration rates in Europe. Still, it would be better if the officials in his administration admitted it as well and eased up on the deportation efforts.

Importing rape and murder is a good thing.
You can dismiss the talking points when they combine legal and illegal immigration.
You can also dismiss when they start using CATO who is totally dishonest.
For example CATO had to retract the Texas study because they used arrest information for legality when residency wasn't yet determined.
Just recently CATO has been using convictions instead of crimes even as they admit the large percentage of deportations before trial.
You'll never hear them cite the Lott report which actually surveyed arizona prisons to show their narrative is false.
Just more dishonesty from Reason.
And it misses the point anyway….you can’t have a fiscally sustainable society with an open border and a welfare state….look at all the freebies they have handed out to these people!
Like when Demjeff (and I believe sarcles) would just use the term “immigrants” and refuse to differentiate between legal and the illegal alien rapefugees?
Anytime someone refers to illegals as ‘immigrants’ we know they are dishonest and a complete shitweasel. Pedo Jeffy is a prime example of this dishonesty.
It's pretty definitely worse in Europe. If the stats are indeed correct, that's a good thing. But we should make sure we don't end up like Europe and take a close look at what policies they have that are creating this situation and make sure we don't do that.
Reason literally argues for the policies that Europe has on immigration. It's almost as if Reason is pissed off that we don't have the illegal immigrant crime problem Europe does and will do anything in its power to get us there.
Charles Koch wants his undocumented slaves.
Sandra called that years ago.
And the price of mass immigration was the Cologne Sex Attacks.
>>Trump admitted that his potent criticism of immigration, used to such effect on the campaign trail, rests on a cracked foundation.
is this all you're taking to the City Forensics Final against National Review High?
Weren't you, SPECIFICALLY, the person behind that asinine "Most violence is from the Right"?
Oh shit, you ARE.
Amber Duke made your study her bitch.
Given your shoddy workmanship there, why should we trust your take on ANY issue.
Go the fuck back to CATO.
Saw on Bluesky that the Kirk suspect was wearing a Trump shirt.
Right when Robinson turned himself in, and his name was all over the internet, I saw that same photo on X. Luckily someone else posted the actual, unedited photo right below to show he was actually wearing a regular nonpolitical shirt in the real photo. Someone used AI to swap a Trump shirt on Robinson in that photo. Of course every leftist used that as proof that Robinson was right wing.
It’s all they’ve got. And just wait and see how rabid and insane they become when the feds start rounding up antifa terrorists.
Wait, that's this asshole?
Yup. He wrote the laughable CATO study. Which was mildly better than the Prosecution Project one --- but it was shit.
asinine "Most violence is from the Right"?
IIRC his point was that most murderous violence is from the right. And the data support it.
I don't know whether you find it hard to believe because you forget all those instances of right-wing violence, or you prefer that the face were not known and so you feel you have to lie about it.
"We've got a Trump supporter here." Bang Bang and then Aaron Danielson was dead after Michael Reinoehl shot him for being a Trump supporter in the summer of love.
That wasn't included as political violence/murder by the left in that study. There isn't a more clear-cut example than that. But sure, defend a study because it confirms your biases.
No, real data doesn’t support that. You’re a liar, touting these lies.
Do you understand that you have zero credibility?
You know shrike, we've given you the evidence of your bullshit claims are bullshit many times right? Same for ADL, same for the Cato instance.
Youre just being intentionally retarded.
Examples in those stories include black drug dealers killing neo nazi drug dealers as right wing. It includes eco terrorists as right wing. It excludes fucking BLM.
Youre a fucking retard shrike.
>because immigrants here are locked up far less often than native-born Americans.
When you strip out legal immigrants is it still true?
He does not know how to properly run a study, so feel free to ignore him.
Even if it does, all that it proves is that the US is infinitely better at screening people who want to come here.
Definitely not the point the writer wants to make.
The author does provide a distinction between illegal and legal immigrants, showing illegals higher than legals, but still lower than native born Americans. No idea if he did a good job parsing the data.
He doesn't. He is using convixtoon data to ignore crime numbers. Deportation is often a remedy for crimes of illegals. Not all go through criminal courts. It is dishonest.
The graph included say "incarcerated" so I think you're correct. If the illegal criminal was deported, instead of incarcerated, it wouldn't be included in that graph. If this is true, I don't think it's an accident that they set the criteria that way which just so happens to give a result in favor of his open-borders argument.
Its not an accident. They switched to this metric after they got blasted for their dishonest Texas study from 2 years ago. In that study they used solely data at arrest. Then Texas pointed out they didnt ask residency at that point in an arrest and Cato had to retract. They fucking suck on this topic.
Reason reported that retracted story as well. But never a follow-up on the flaws.
How much of that is due to sanctuary city/states refusing to provide data beyond total prisoners to give corrupt leftists like Alex bad data to launder? How do deportations instead of trial count, non crime or conviction?
Illegals get deported often instead of being locked up. One of CATOs intentional lies. Along with liberal DAs downgrading illegal crimes to avoid deportation as a policy.
You know, I am pretty sure immigrants to the US committed fewer crimes than Native Americans - but look how that still turned out for them.
The legal residents have spoken, all immigrants and their descendants have a responsibility to get back on the Mayflower or equivalent and self deport. The loudest go first.
By time honored right of conquest, make us you commie cunt.
You’ve got to be parody.
So have you departed yet?
You first, Tony.
"Give it time" I think is the point. America could easily get to par with Europe if it's not careful.
They are trying their damnedest to make it so.
Trump Bashed Other Countries for Their Immigrant Crime Rates. Here's Why He Didn't Mention the U.S.
Because you don't bash your own country on the international stage?
"When I am abroad, I always make it a rule never to criticize or attack the government of my own country. I make up for lost time when I come home."
- Winston Churchill
Many of us on this immigration beat have repeatedly pointed out that crime (in the U.S. context) is not the point. But I guess this is progress. Reason is no longer spending any time on the "zero cost proposition" argument since they provably lost that one, they're now on the "they don't commit as many crime just yet, but we're working on making sure the borders remain porous at all costs" argument.
Retard, Trump didn't mention America BECAUSE WE'RE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
We're deporting them. We're stopping them from getting in. And we're imprisoning the few we miss.
Europe is catering to them and screwing it's own citizens. The US is not.
I keep thinking you people can't sink lower, and you keep proving me --and all your sane readers-- wrong.
IKts sad that Europe is catering to these filthy savage barbarians who are raping white girls like they did in the Colonge Sex Attacks.
any sane society would have mobilized troops to deport these invaders by force!
because immigrants here are locked up far less often than native-born Americans.
Gosh I guess we should just have open borders and no immigration rules then. I'm convinced!
The last thing I notice is this reminds me a bit of Reason's abortion reporting... "75% of Americans support abortion[...]"
Where [...] = "with strict limits".
In this case, it's: "Illegal Immigrants [commit less crime than] native born Americans!"
where [commit less crime than] = are the second highest group who are most likely to be convicted of a crime, far more than legal immigrants, and 'all other immigrants (whatever that means)".
This causes a problem. A population that's responsible for 5% of the crime (within the group) that's 5% from people who shouldn't be here". That's a serious problem, and it suggests that if you increased that population dramatically as we did from 2016 -2024" then that number is very likely to go up. And even if it remains much lower than native born, again, it doesn't matter. It's a group that's the 2nd most likely to commit a crime who should never even have the opportunity to do so.
I also don't trust the statistics because I'm suspicious of how they count crimes, what crimes, how states like California literally catch and release for certain crimes and therefore won't report them due to their sanctuary state position etc. etc. It all gets very muddy.
Bottom line, if your border were properly policed, "illegal immigrants" as a group would have the lowest crime rate on the board, lower than than Asians who play violin and have math degrees.
It's simpler than that. They're saying 'immigrants' commit less crime, not that 'illegal immigrants' do. It's a conflation technique. When you lump in the law-abiding legal immigrants, and also conveniently ignore immigration-related offenses, it skews the number and helps the 'open-borders' argument.
This article claims to have separated legal from illegal, and that even illegal immigrants commit crimes at a rate FAR lower than native-born Americans.
But there are real problems with that claim. As JesseAz pointed out, many illegals are deported instead of tried and convicted. So they wouldn't count as illegal immigrant convictions. Another problem with this article is that the graph showing lower levels even by illegals is graphing "incarcerations." So even if convicted, but deported instead, those illegals wouldn't be included in the graph.
Finally, it's harder to catch an illegal who commits a crime than it is for a native-born American with a full name, address (and address history), DOB, etc. on file. So is the chart, even if one dismisses the earlier criticisms I lobbed, showing illegals commit crimes at a lower rate than Americans, or just that it's harder to catch illegals who commit crimes?
(then there's also the point JesseAz made about woke prosecutors dismissing crimes or reducing them to misdemeanors specifically because the woke prosecutor doesn't want the charges or convictions to result in deportations)
They also ignore the reality that second-generation non-citizens are brutally criminal.
Bad faith argument. Convictions are not a valid proxy for criminal participation rates.
* Not every crime is reported much less solved.
* Not every guilty person is convicted.
* Not every convicted person is guilty.
See: Charges reduced/dropped converted to 'diversion program' even after hundreds of arrests for the same person. Aka California.
There is also the fact that many illegal aliens who commit serious crimes often flee back to their home country to escape justice. This is especially true for Mexican illegals who are just right over the border.
Bogus article from reason, in the past they would not have published such garbage.
In most states when an illegal is arrested he is just deported, so using conviction figures is either an intentional distortion or the author did a poor job with facts.
I wish reason would stop hiring leftists, as they have ruined a once fine libertarian magazine by making it too progressive so their Hollywood friends will like them more.
Reason has ways published this garbage from Cato. Koch is fully open borders propaganda.
Are we sure KMW isn't chemjeff?
Without blacks and HIspanics, the US has a crime rate like Switzerland. Committing crime at lower rates than our black criminal class isn't the win Nowrasteh thinks it is. It shouldn't be the standard we use.
There's also plenty of areas where prosecutors will refuse to prosecute illegals to avoid them being deported.
Simply remove illegals from the census and no state will ever want them.
The biggest criminals in the US congregate at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in DC.
I'll suggest two alternate addresses:
Washington, DC 20510
Washington, DC 20515
Have you ever donated to antifa?
Who among them killed Mollie Tibbets?
who among them killed Rachel Morin?
who among them killed Laken Riley?
Mollie Tibbets
Rachel Morin
Laken Riley
Al of them white girls who were murdered because illegals wanted to rape their pussies!
Make no mistake.
simping for illegals is rooted in anti-white animus.
I know this because the same people who excuse illegal immigration because whites are not indigeous to North America ALSO support mass migration into Europe where whites ARE indigenous, instead of saying that white Europeans get to gun down invaders en masse.
They believe in this colonizer-colonizee dynamics. They feel that whites are responsible for all the evil in the world, so they support violent criminals immigrating in and committing crimes against whites, especially sex crimes against white girls.
They cheered the Colonge Sex Attacks.

Of course, if little black boys like AJ Wise are killed by illegals, they just consider it collateral damage!
White Girls Matter!
Being here illegally isn't a crime?
Fuck you, Alex Nowrasteh.
