President Donald Trump speaks to the media at the White House | Hu Yousong / Xinhua News Agency/Newscom

Employers added 22,000 new jobs in August. For those paying attention, this is substantially below what had been forecast.

Employers added 22,000 jobs in August, with private sector payrolls up 38,000.

The unemployment rate rose to 4.3% (This is the highest since 2021.)

Job growth for June was revised down to show a *loss* of 13,000 jobs, and July was revised up to a gain of 79,000 from 73,000. On…

The jobs report was released early Friday morning, and it indicated a rising unemployment rate, plus job numbers adjustments for June and July. TLDR: things don't look great.

Some silver linings: Though job growth was low, layoffs were also relatively low. That said, people who have been fired or laid off have struggled to get back on their feet: "The number of people with continued unemployment claims has been elevated since April," reports The New York Times.

Health care alone added 31K jobs. The rest of the economy lost jobs

It is very likely now that the Federal Reserve Board will drop interest rates, something they've hesitated to do for about the last nine months. But with a struggling labor market, it might be time. (The stock market is reacting fine to all this news; though a bad jobs report isn't great, an interest rate cut could be good.)

"Although there's no evidence of rapidly mounting layoffs, in July the number of unemployed people surpassed the number of available jobs for the first time since the spring of 2021. Job openings have fallen sharply for two months in health care, which has been the main industry driving growth over the past year," reports The New York Times. "Also in the labor market weakness column: data from the payroll provider ADP, which showed just 54,000 private-sector jobs were added in August. Since the public sector most likely shed jobs last month as the Trump administration continues to fire people, the total number could be lower."

One interesting nugget: This month's report showed 12,000 lost manufacturing jobs, which makes a total of 78,000 lost over the course of this year. If one goal of President Donald Trump's tariffs was to revitalize domestic manufacturing, it sure doesn't look like things are going according to plan.

Scenes from New York: Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking reelection in a race against Democratic nominee/frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, hardcore law-and-order Republican Curtis Sliwa, and former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has reportedly confided to trusted advisers that he might drop out, having been in talks with the Trump administration recently in Florida.

It's also rumored that the administration reached out to Sliwa, in hopes of slimming the race down to just Mamdani vs. Cuomo; Sliwa does not appear interested in taking any Trump offers.

"I don't think you can win, unless you have one on one," said Trump when asked about the mayoral race. "I would like to see two people drop out and have it be one on one. And I think that's a race."

("Is there any scenario, any, where Curtis Sliwa drops out of this race?" asked radio host Sid Rosenberg of Sliwa yesterday morning. "Yeah, if somebody puts a bullet in the back of my head, and I'm in a casket," replied Sliwa, who survived a shooting back in '92.)

QUICK HITS

  • The Justice Department has opened up a criminal investigation—related to her purported mortgage fraud, as in: declaring two residences to be her primary—into Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board. "The move…was instigated by Ed Martin, a hyperpartisan Trump loyalist with little prosecutorial experience," reports The New York Times. "He has said that it is legitimate for federal officials to publicly air criminal investigations into people targeted by the president, even if an investigation does not result in a conviction or even an indictment….Martin, who has been given few staff but broad latitude to team up with U.S. attorney's offices around the country, flouted the department's procedural norms last month by suggesting to the Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, that Ms. Cook step aside." "At this time, I encourage you to remove Ms. Cook from your board," Martin wrote in a letter to Powell last month. "Do it today before it is too late! After all, no American thinks it is appropriate that she serve during this time with a cloud hanging over her."
  • Inside the tech CEO dinner at the White House (for which Elon Musk was notably absent).
  • Sometime today, the president will sign an executive order renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War. At least it's honest!
  • "Since the election, Bluesky has lost ground," writes Nate Silver at his Substack. "More precise data based on the number of unique 'likers', 'posters' and 'followers' at Bluesky tracks a similar curve, with an initial peak around the election and a secondary peak after Trump's inauguration but persistent erosion since then. The number of unique posters at Bluesky peaked at just under 1.5 million on Nov. 18, 2024 but has since fallen to an average of about 660,000 on weekdays and 600,000 on weekends: in other words, a drop of more than half." Silver details what a bubble Bluesky is, disproportionately used by people in D.C. and folks in "crunchy white states like Vermont and Oregon" (lol). But "demographics alone only go so far in explaining Blueskyism, however. It's not a political movement so much as a tribal affiliation, a niche set of attitudes and style of discursive norms that almost seem designed in a lab to be as unappealing as possible to anyone outside the clique."

Shouldn't we wait for the inevitable August adjustments?

What I said was that numbers are based upon available information and change as more information comes in. I never said anything about them being concerning or not. I think they are concerning because they show that Trump’s policies are harming the economy. What is even more concerning is the desire by him and his defenders to attack the numbers and statisticians rather than acknowledge the fact that taxes aren’t the path to prosperity.

The "facts" changed is your mantra to defend incorrect numbers...and Trump attacking the "fact" makers is bad. Laughable.

Well this is a complete lie. You dont understand the numbers. You claimed he was manipulating them.

Us attacking BLS is us telling YOU that the numbers are wrong as we have been for years. Only when Trump says the same do you suddenly get outraged, despite your OWN post agreeing the data is bad.

What you failed to do was admit Biden was cooking the books. Something many of us pointed out here for months using actual data, which ended up being precient when numbers were revised down by 1M.

The problem with you and Mike is you have no fucking clue nor interest to look at the below the headline numbers.

Ironically the same data that showed Biden was cooking the books is now showing these numbers are being under reported.

The household jobs survey data showed an increase over 100k last month. Ironically the delta between business and household survey has slowly been closing under Trump. This implies that they are still correcting for the bullshit BLS employed under Biden. This is despite the intentional decrease in government funded jobs this year.

          Here is the household graph:

          https://cms.zerohedge.com/s3/files/inline-images/payrolls%20vs%20jobs.jpg?itok=gFaha1z2

This is yours and Mike's primary issue. Intellectual laziness.

And fucking stop with your bullshit on taxes. During BBB you demanded higher income taxes which ultimately leads to higher labor costs.

You continue to also ignore the deregulation efforts to lower domestic costs, same as Boehm. Because youre all dishonest actors.

I'll repeat my comment from a few weeks ago:

Here are the jobs added numbers released by the BLS for the past 2 years with revisions in the subsequent 2 months and (delta from initial). The ones immediately before the election are bolded. Can you point out the pattern that indicates cooking the books for Biden in these numbers?

Did you do this "math" yourself?

Those +/- values are supposed to show the change for that revision from the previous numbers? 142 to 159 is +17. 159 to 78 is not +32. That's far from the only example. Maybe you got some of that new math going on.

Oh, I thought both columns would calculate revision from original. I think most people would expect to see deviation of rev 1 from original and rev 2 from rev 1. Maybe a 4th column for the total revision.

Did you rethink your hypothesis after correcting it, or no?

I don't see any pattern other than we can't count on these numbers to be accurate. They seem to go up or down without a pattern other than big economic changes like COVID lockdowns (not on this table) or the start of tariffs result in the biggest corrections.

I noticed the error last time you posted this, but the thread was dead by the time I commented, this new one makes a lot more sense.

I don’t think they were cooking the books for the election as they started way back in 2023 (I think it went back even further than that), fwiw. Biden’s handlers were just so eager to crow that they were doing such a great job that they rushed to boast. The only difference is Joe the media isn’t going to be sucking Trump’s dick and ignoring the massive revisions.

All true and a very good point. The media going to bat for Brandon and against Trump is very real and maybe the reason it seems to many like the numbers were cooked. I'd say the numbers weren't cooked, but the articles were.

What have either of us said that was deceitful?

I know that you are intelligent enough to understand that when Democrats tax businesses, that that is a cost that must somehow be made up. They make up the cost by some combination of cutting jobs, giving less profits to shareholders, and raising prices. You are intelligent enough to understand that Democrat taxes on businesses are a drag on the economy.

What I find to be deceitful is when you and others claim that Trump taxes on businesses have no negative effects. No, they have positive effects. So when numbers indicate the prices are going up and jobs are going down, you go on the attack. You shoot the messenger and continue to claim that Trump taxes juice the economy.

What the fuck, man? Taxes are taxes. Doesn't matter if they're Democrat taxes or Trump taxes. They have the same effect. You're smarter than that. You're an intelligent guy. Can't say the same for my muted hate club, but you should know better.

      The other side:

Less government jobs, decrease at the federal level.

Unemployment rate rose because of new entrants looking for job, work for medicaid/food stamps.

Will force the fed to drop rates closer to the neutral rate of 3%

Decrease in non citizens for work, opening up jobs for citizens.

Not a bad idea to the degree (and ONLY to the degree) that debt is used to finance the property. Otherwise, debt financing for real estate is effectively a tax shelter for other sources of income. Which is a huge subsidy to keep asset prices propped up and investment distorted.

Eliminating structural subsidies re debt is what let's Germany (47%), Netherlands(42%), Switzerland (26%), keep such low debt/GDP levels.

Followup to Scottish 13 year old arrested for defending herself. As infuriating as you can imagine.

This report was corroborated from the amazing work done by @Anc_Aesthetics in investigating this story:

    - Police Scotland originally claimed that CCTV footage went missing but it proved that only Lola Moir had committed a crime by being in possession of dangerous weapons

    - It is now claimed that this is a lie and there is proof that Police Scotland attempted to cover up the crime of Fatos and his sister assaulting the little girls

    - Attached is the screenshot of the hospital record proving that Ruby Moir sustained a serious head injury (concussion) as a result of the assault by Fatos Ali Dumana and his sister

    - This was a vicious attack in which they attacked Ruby unprovoked , yanked her to the ground and the pair of them kicked Ruby in the head while she lay on the ground defenceless

    - This is what motivated Lola to pull out the weapons to scare off Fatos and his sister

      SSDD -

Remember when a pregnant nurse at an NYC hospital tried to steal a rideshare bike from a group of urban youths who were just hanging out around the rideshare stall and, when the receipts were shown and self-evident truths and recognizable patterns 100% buttressed by contextual facts, at least one Reason writer told us that it wasn't a big deal and we should ignore the fact that the media ran with an utterly false narrative and that social media got a completely different nurse at the same hospital doxxed and/or fired?

Really getting to the point where the soap box, jury box, and ballot box aren't viable options and simply brandishing the knife and axe won't be enough.

The real issue here is that even hiring someone like Weiss isn't doing anything other than re-sorting the deck chairs. Legacy teevee news is a zombie institution that's been propped up by their attachment to global media megacorps. It isn't that much different than the alternative media orgs of the 2000s being kept alive through ongoing infusions of venture capital that simply never make any money.

At some point, these media corps are just going to have to face the fact that network television is going to die with the Boomers, and start preparing for that sooner rather than later. Even Gen-X, which grew up watching network tv and news shows, and kept those viewing habits well into their 30s and 40s, aren't clocked in to it anymore.

In defense of olde tyme TV news, that was the only media source with a positive effect discovered during the Perception Gap project. That was an effort to compare what partisan groups thought the other team believes, compared to their actual beliefs, on a series of hot button issues. To no surprise the gaps in perception (and projection) increased with most media use, and with most education (especially on the left). People who claimed little media consumption had the smallest gaps, except for the fossils who watched network news on the telly.

According to a new Justice Department Inspector General report, Charles McGonigal, the former head of the FBI's New York counterintelligence division, leaked sensitive details about a criminal investigation into CEFC China Energy—the same Chinese conglomerate that funneled millions to Hunter Biden.

Let's be crystal clear about what happened here. While the FBI was secretly investigating CEFC China for criminal activity, McGonigal was simultaneously tipping off the very people they were pursuing. He admitted during a November 2023 proffer session that he warned an associate of the Chinese energy giant about upcoming arrests and shared classified investigative details. His exact words to this individual, known as "Person B," were that he "made it perfectly clear" that CEFC-related figures would be arrested.

Does that mean reading at story time at the local library or being in charge of a track and field clinic at the local Y?

Related question: It would be impolite not to trip or 'flat tire' him as a joke, right? Refusing to trip him because he's got no legs would be like deadnaming, right? Someone who actually suffered an infection or terrible accident, you're just adding insult to injury, but someone who cut their legs off on a lark, you're just ruining the fun and diminishing their lived experience.

Not a surprise in any way, this is a copy paste of the standard California / Communist playbook. Pretty sure San Fran and other Ca cities have perfected eliminating AP classes, and shoving smarter kids into the same "general math" courses with the dummies, to make sure they aren't getting any advantages.

This is very standard communist / socialist operating procedure

Fun story about media narratives and Gaza.

A month or so ago an activist claims to have seen with his own eyes IDF kill a boy who just recieved aid from GHF. This report swept the media narratives. This never happened.

It forced the boy and his mother into hiding as Hamas was now on the search to make sure the boy didnt turn up alive. Boy and mother finally found and removed from Gaza.

Reminds me of the recent Dave Smith Rogan episode. Dave was on about how the "starving boy" picture wasn't misleading just because he had a genetic disease.

Look, this is boy who cried wolf. The same thing happens when eco-activists say, "were all gonna be underwater in 5 years" and then it doesn't happen. It turns people off your cause, not emboldens them to it. Weather kids in gaza are starving to death or not, weather climate change will kill us all or not, crying wolf about it will not help you in the long run.

Dave just keeps doubling down on the propaganda doesn't he. Hes losing it on that topic and has been bleeding into others.

When someone continues to double down on false information they cant be trusted with other views. Shows Dave is working from first assumptions and fitting information to his prior assumptions.

Their justification has always been, "well, we're just starting conversations to bring attention to a real issue." The problem is, these people have been doing this shit for decades now, and it's reached the point that their credibility is completely shot to everyone except the last of the aging Boomer cohort that takes everything the mainstream media asserts at face value. That's why these astroturfed protests over the last few months are attended mostly by the same hippie retards who have been doing this for the last 50-plus years.

Absolutely true, and it extends to pretty much every level of "expert" now. Trust in every institution is at an all-time low, and it's well deserved. At this point, you're probably better off relying on the tried and true methods of your parents and their parents than listening to anything the current "experts" agree on. It's a pretty fucked up place to be.

Think of how much pointless activity and money has been wasted on various "blue ribbon commissions" and "panels of experts" over the last 80 years. Even during the immediate post-WW2 era when demonstrating competency and deep knowledge of subject matter wasn't considered "white supremacy," these activities rarely accomplished what they set out to do. It was mostly an excuse to fuck around and gladhand for a few days, write off dinners at the fancy steakhouse, propose a few "reforms" that didn't result in jack shit other than cause institutional churn for a few years, and get a nice little write-up in Time Magazine, only to come back about 10 years later to do the same thing all over again.

Dave's position (that he's said on PotP) is that the boy does not have a genetic disease, but a disorder caused by his mother's malnutrition during pregnancy.

This is different than what I have read elsewhere which better aligns with what you said. That is the boy has a genetic condition and is starving because of the lack of medical facilities he requires to get nutrition. If correct, it is more lack of medical care than lack of food.

I agree about your crying wolf conclusion. This type of dishonesty only hurts their case.

As far as I know she still has not denied the charges. Her only argument is that mortgage fraud does not rise to the level of for cause. Doesn't really matter who the prosecutor is when the defendant doesn't deny the crime. Multiple FED governors have resigned when accused of impropriety and that's what she should have done. Lacking any defense at this point it's reasonable to conclude that the evidence against her is compelling. Her lawsuit simply claims that Trump can't fire her, it doesn't speak to the merits of the charge. But she's decided to force the government's hand with a frivolous lawsuit. Now she's faced with a criminal indictment. Seems to me she is poorly served by her attorney.

Silver details what a bubble Bluesky is, disproportionately used by people in D.C. and folks in "crunchy white states like Vermont and Oregon" (lol). But "demographics alone only go so far in explaining Blueskyism, however. It's not a political movement so much as a tribal affiliation, a niche set of attitudes and style of discursive norms that almost seem designed in a lab to be as unappealing as possible to anyone outside the clique."

It's basically the tranny/Deep State/Karenocracy platform. If you want to get the perspective of the dying liberal world order that Clinton and Blair set up in the 90s, combined with the mentally ill cultural left of the post-Occupy years, then that's the place to visit. But it's not capable of driving the zeitgeist nor the informational narrative like these people were doing when they controlled Twitter.

And now it's coming out that Macron was putting the same type of pressure on Twitter during COVID that the US Deep State and the Biden administration did to manipulate those same informational narratives. This is why when snakes like Nina Janckowicz complain about "misinformation," what they really mean is, "information that our side isn't pushing regardless of the reality." Sort of like how "our democracy" really means "any political environment that our side doesn't have complete hegemony."

It's very telling the degree to which the institutional left has been flailing, ever since he bought Twitter and then shut down USAID. The echo chamber Silver alludes to about Bluesky is a microcosm of what's going on in Dem political circles broadly. It's why their politicians and media mouthpieces keep going back to the same tactics they've been using for decades now, but to anyone outside those bubbles, they just sound like a bunch of disconnected, mentally ill lunatics, walking around with a cheeseboard and screaming about how Armageddon is going to happen any second.

Turns out, all that happened is that he ensured that the platform went from a 75/25 liberal/conservative presence to one that was roughly 50/50. And most tellingly of all, the cuckservative right thought that was bad.

For those of us who are basically happy with Trump so far, this is the kind of stuff he does that makes you roll your eyes. Waste of time, meaningless, stupid.

Also, I do not want a Dept of War. I want a Dept of Defense. Just because our military is used to project force doesnt mean i want it to. Keep the name and live up to it instead.

Actually, it was the War Department.

Back when we won wars, and were naive enough to number them.

But we're not at war. Dept of Defense is actually the right name for it and the US military should be a defensive force.

Just call it a "de-transition" back to acknowledging what it really is.

I think it's wonderful. Calling it what it really is, instead of sleazy euphemisms to hide the fact that all the nation building it does is actually war.

The exercise itself is largely unproductive, but ultimately the name of the department is just semantics. It was changed after WW2 to sound more benign than it really is. Even the left recognizes this, which is why their kookier members end up proposing silly shit like establishing a "Department of Peace."

I suppose it's better than if they let Elon name it. We don't need a Department of Deez Nuts.

We're going to see a lot of "The Department of War (formerly The Department of Defense)" in the coming weeks. Most journalists only recently dropped the "formerly known as Twitter" thing.

Zohran Mamdani’s education policy isn’t about supporting low-performing kids, it’s about eliminating high-performing kids.

Of course, all "equity" policy strives to eliminate high performers so low performers don't feel bad.

"Since the election, Bluesky has lost ground," writes Nate Silver at his Substack. 18, 2024 but has since fallen to an average of about 660,000 on weekdays and 600,000 on weekends: in other words, a drop of more than half."

This is what Nate Silver should stick to: Numbers that can be objectively tracked by simply counting them. As a political analyst? He's overrated and not even a real pollster.

Silver details what a bubble Bluesky is, disproportionately used by people in D.C. and folks in "crunchy white states like Vermont and Oregon" (lol).

How is this possible? Trump put his stooge to oversee these numbers so that they won't show job losses.

I'm pretty sure there's a bit of lost-in-translation to normie-speak, and it's probably better categorized as amputee porn.

That said, if 'The Game' were to avoid thinking about The Human Centipede, I lost.

Yes. There is an actual fetish of people who want to have sex with amputees. As mad.casual says, it's generally referred to as "amputee" porn. "Amputation porn" would be something too horrible to contemplate.

'Employers added 22,000 jobs in August, with private sector payrolls up 38,000.'

So, private sector workers, who create wealth, increased by 38,000, while government sector workers, who consume or destroy wealth, decreased by 16,000. Sounds like a win to me.
