National Guardsmen on patrol in D.C. | Robyn Stevens Brody/Sipa USA/Newscom
(Robyn Stevens Brody/Sipa USA/Newscom)

Trump administration makes plea to Republican governors: National Guard personnel will be deployed from red states to Washington, D.C., under a deal between President Donald Trump and three Republican governors.

Some 800 National Guardsmen are already deployed in D.C. for Trump's law-and-order show of force. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster will send another 200 from his state; Gov. Patrick Morrisey will send 300–400 from West Virginia; and Gov. Mike DeWine will add 150 Ohioans to the mix. "Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson told reporters Thursday that [National Guardsmen] will not be making arrests, but they may 'temporarily limit the movement of an individual who has entered restricted or secured area without permission,'" reports Axios, which makes it sound like their role will be somewhat pointless and performative.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, called this whole thing a "manufactured emergency" (and pivoted to talking about January 6, naturally) and "an opportunity for Donald Trump to play dictator" on MSNBC. "Crime in D.C. is at a 30-year low and on a downward trajectory," he added to ABC, repeating a common talking point that's grounded in possibly-suspect stats (more here). Many Democrats, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, can't quite decide the stance they want to take: just citing the "30-year low" statistic, or conceding that there are specific problems in D.C.—hotspots of carjackings, for example—but that Trump's deployments aren't actually targeting them effectively so far.

Scenes from New York: Late last week, Mayor Eric Adams—who is running for re-election against socialist Zohran Mamdani, disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and based beret-wearer Curtis Sliwa—announced that he would prioritize forcibly moving drug users off the streets and allowing hospital workers to force them into treatment (following court approval).

He announced this at a Manhattan Institute event, saying "the evidence is right there in front of us."

"People openly using illegal drugs on the streets and in our parks, passed out in doorways and sidewalks, encampments littering with syringes and vials and unsanitary conditions that are a threat to public health and public order," he added. "This cannot be allowed to continue."

"The mayor's proposal also called for a new drop-in center in a Bronx neighborhood where The New York Post has been documenting complaints about public drug abuse; a pilot program to reward people with substance abuse disorders who keep to their treatment plans, a practice known as 'contingency management'; and funding to provide cellphones to participants in the city's Relay program, which provides support to people who have been taken to emergency rooms for overdoses," reports The New York Times. "The goal is to facilitate follow-up calls."

QUICK HITS

  • Geographically, where has federal law enforcement been deployed in D.C.?

The @washingtonpost tracked where Trump's forces are patrolling in Washington. Spoiler alert: They're not where the crime is. pic.twitter.com/hH1QFdFFz5

— Peter Baker (@peterbakernyt) August 17, 2025

There are also some reports that Anacostia, a crime-ridden neighborhood in the southeastern part of D.C., has had an increase in National Guard activity; it's a difficult thing to measure.

Anacostia is located in Southeast D.C., across the river from Capitol Hill in Ward 8. D.C. has seen an increase in National Guard and federal assets, and we asked the local manager at @DCitySmokehouse what his views on the increase in federal patrols.

  • No breakthroughs in the Trump-Putin Alaska talks, per Bloomberg.
  • "A social-media campaign launched late last month touted immigration enforcement as an opportunity for father-son bonding and to 'deport illegals with your absolute boys,' a slang term for close friends," according to a Wall Street Journal report. "The Department of Homeland Security has invoked world-war-era imagery and touted 1990s Superman actor Dean Cain in an all-out blitz to persuade Americans they should join ICE's ranks. The federal government also offered hefty incentives: up to $50,000 in signing bonuses and up to $60,000 in student loan forgiveness. No undergraduate degree is required. DHS also lifted the age cap for law-enforcement roles, opening a deportation officer position specifically for people over 40, and tried to woo back retired law-enforcement officials with a 'return to mission' campaign."
  • Meet the Iowa Democrat who sounds like a Republican and is currently running for governor.
  • Robust changes to immigration screening:

NEWS — The Trump administration issued a memo signaling it will more heavily scrutinize applications filed by legal immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship, its latest effort to tighten immigration benefits.

It expands the inquiry into whether someone has "good moral character." pic.twitter.com/IBFCk5xeun

  • I agree with this, but your mileage may vary; libertarians come down in very different places here.

Embryonic selection turns the parent-child relationship into a consumer-product relationship.

We already have some of that with sex-selective abortion, but the promise of embryonic selection is one of perfect customization of a consumer good.

— Santi Ruiz (@rSanti97) August 17, 2025

This round of embryonic screening/selection discourse was started by the excellent Ross Douthat interview of Orchid founder Noor Siddiqui.

Note the rhetorical devices used in the Orchid moral crusade: The implication is that if you don't screen your children and instead choose to have them naturally, you're neglectful, or you've abdicated your responsibility to them. https://t.co/D2Gex56JP3

    American Volunteer KIA in Ukraine

Thomas Riley Hamburger from Louisiana, USA

Thomas was a 21-year-old American soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was deployed to Poland, but there wasn't much to do there, so life was a bit dull.

It was then that he decided to desert and cross the Polish border to enlist in the Ukrainian army.

There, he joined the 13th Khartia Brigade of the National Guard.

He was destroyed on July 22, 2025 by the North group in Zelene, Kharkov region, on the Russian border.

Guess supporting the dictator in Kiev was Hamburger’s hill to die on.

    James Not So Swift

Former FBI Director and 'Swiftie' James Comey releases a 5-minute video talking about how Taylor Swift inspires him and how she helps him deal with Trump.

"At my second Taylor Swift concert in Hartford, CT, 14 years ago, she sang a song about this topic, asking..." ... "Why you gotta be so mean?" Comey said while quoting Swift's 2010 song 'Mean' as he discussed how mean people on X are.

It's truly mind-blowing that this man served as the FBI director.

I haven't been paying attention. Is this legit or a massaging of stats?

    1. Kungpowderfinger   1 year ago

It’s going to take some due process to determine this, until then we should take DC city leadership at their word.

    2. Quicktown Brix   1 year ago

The 30 year low is the happy ending to the massage.

Best case scenario, it is choosing to believe dubious stats.

    3. sarcasmic   1 year ago

The veracity of facts are determined by the head of state. In this case Trump says they are not valid. That means that the stats are all lies propagated by enemies of the state. That's how it works in China and NK, how it worked in the USSR, and how it works in Trump's America.

When I asked MPD in 2020 why my incident was not on its crime map, an MPD spokesman said the city only includes 1st degree felonies under its crime stats. That would mean that for every person robbed, assaulted, or sexually abused in anything less than egregious ways, you have not been counted into the total tally.

Wow. And they arrested the guy who attacker her (but several months later) and released him immediately. And in the 2 years it took to bring him to trial, he was arrested 5 more times for other incidents, which they also probably didn't count in the stats, and shouldn't have happened at all, were he in prison as he should have been.

The consistent response to any criticism of Trump is to compare what he is doing to something Democrats did and then smugly declare victory. All I'm doing is boiling it down to "Democrats did it first, that makes it ok!"

And, as I said before, you're a terrible mind reader. All of your criticisms read as confession by projection to me. What a sad life you must lead when attacking me is the highlight of your day.

Right, they are pointing out the standard you are using to criticize Trump is one which all Dems also fail so it is clearly not a generally accepted standard. If it was there would be a record of left wingers applying to their own team.

That's especially true of yourself who literally never criticized Dems so we know this standard is not a generally applied principle of yours, but rather a standard applied only to those you hate. It's interesting you criticize solely based on the Team rather than consistent principles considering that's a criticism you make of others. It almost seems you don't apply any consistent standards whatsoever.

What a sad life you must lead when attacking me is the highlight of your day.

I criticize Democrats plenty. Same with Reason. The fact is that you and others ignore that criticism, pretend it doesn't exist, build a narrative based upon lies, and repeat it ad nauseum.

Now let's say that it was true. So what if Democrats did a bad thing first and I or Reason didn't criticize them for it. It's still a bad thing. All you're doing is appealing to hypocrisy.

When Bobby gets caught stealing and says "But Mommy, Johnny did it first!" does that absolve Bobby of guilt? No. Is it childish and dumb? Yes.

Well you guys are doing the same thing when you respond to criticism of Trump with "Democrats did it first!" You're behaving like children.

Stop behaving like children and I'll stop pointing it out.

It's a fake stat. Murder isnt even at a 10 year low. But the commissioner was sending leadership to crime scenes to list assaults and robberies to lower classifications at the scene. That's when a crime was actually recorded by the police.

    5. Bubba Jones   1 year ago

      It's legit but...

As data analyst Jeff Asher explained on his Substack, Jeff-alytics: “Multiple things are true.” “Violent crime in DC is down a huge amount from where it was in the early 1990s and down a good bit from where it was a decade ago,” he wrote. “Violent crime in DC fell in 2024 after increasing in 2023, that much is clear from DC’s reporting to the FBI.” Asher added that violent crime in 2025 appears to be declining, though the available data is a “bit murkier.”

So judging whether crime in D.C. is decreasing requires the followup question: “Since when?” Violent crime is less of a problem now than it was in the 1990s, but in 2023, the city recorded its highest homicide rate—38.8 per 100,000 people—in 20 years. “D.C. crime has gone down this year over last year, it’s gone down last year over 2023, but it’s still markedly higher than it was 10 to 15 years ago,” Mike Fox, a legal fellow at the Cato Institute’s Project on Criminal Justice and former public defender, told TMD.“D.C. is not an outlier in that,” he added, noting that other major U.S. cities have experienced similar trends.

The federal agency said Luis Portillo-Henriquez of El Salvador has a lengthy criminal record, including raping a child and multiple DUI’s.

An illegal immigrant who was convicted last year of sexually assaulting a minor has been arrested by deportation officers in Maryland, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a statement on June 18, the agency announced that Luis Portillo-Henriquez, a 39-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, was apprehended in Baltimore last week by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

Mr. Portillo-Henriquez entered the United States on an unknown date and location and without being inspected or paroled by federal immigration officers, ICE said.

Officials noted that Mr. Portillo-Henriquez has a lengthy criminal record that began in 2010, including recently being convicted of sex crimes against a 14-year-old child from Maryland. He also has multiple charges and convictions of impaired driving and operating a vehicle while his license was suspended.

NY Times basing their hopes on people like treason-admitting Gen. Milley to mount an actual military coup to depose Trump...

(Reuters) - The top U.S. general secretly called his Chinese counterpart twice over concerns then-President Donald Trump could spark a war with China as his potential election loss loomed and in its aftermath, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
U.S. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called General Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army on Oct. 30, 2020 - four days before the election - and again on Jan. 8, two days after Trump supporters led a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol, the newspaper reported.

In the calls, Milley sought to assure Li the United States was stable and not going to attack and, if there were to be an attack, he would alert his counterpart ahead of time, the report said.

            https://www.glibertarians.com/2025/08/what-you-are-talking-about-is-called-a-coup/

This gets better (TW: NY Times):

Unfortunately, though we (and others) had hoped that the military would only respond to calls to action in American cities and states kicking and screaming, we no longer expect resistance from that institution. Once, perhaps, traditionalist officers might have leaned on protocol and refused to heed a lawless order, taking inspiration from the generals — Mark Milley and James Mattis — who resisted the uprooting of established military standards in the first Trump term.

But today, general officers no longer seem to see themselves as guardians of the constitutional order.

It now seems clear to us that the military will not rescue Americans from Mr. Trump’s misuse of the nation’s military capabilities. Recent changes to the terms of the military’s employment by the Pentagon and its members’ incentives to career advancement will ultimately overcome any constitutional and moral qualms about their conduct.

"Florida man" kills 3 in illegal u-turn

    https://www.financialexpress.com/world-news/us-news/who-is-harjinder-singh-indian-origin-truck-driver-facing-deportation-after-illegal-u-turn-killed-3-in-florida/3949638/

Chilling footage of a crash involving an alleged Sikh truck driver, presumably of Indian origin, who made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike last week, has been released. The incident led to a fatal collision, killing three people in the process, while the man responsible was ultimately charges with three counts of vehicular homicide. He has since been identified as Harjinder Singh, who reportedly entered the United States illegally.

An ICE detainer was issued in his name through the federal 287 (g) program, which allows state troopers to collaborate with ICE. FLHSMC Executive Director Dave Kerner confirmed, “Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations.” He further noted that the Sikh trucker would be no longer “destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors.”

Singh is now facing deportation, as officials affirmed that conclusion of his state charges would result in the strict action, especially since he had been present in the country as an “illegal migrant.”

    1. Chumby   1 year ago

Singh crossed into California in 2018, and instead of reporting his illegal status, the state gave him a CDL to go drive around the country with. That's simply astonishing. While I disagree with issuing any type of license to illegal immigrants, as the perverse incentives and possible fraud associated with the policy are too great, giving a commercial license is a completely different level of insanity.

Truck drivers are supposed to be held to a higher standard than typical motorists, and you'd think being in the country legally would be a baseline. California Democrats were apparently giving CDLs out like candy to illegal immigrants, though. For context, Newsom was lieutenant governor when AB60, the bill that gave drivers' licenses to illegal immigrants, passed, and since becoming governor, he has repeatedly affirmed the policy as necessary. Now, three more people are dead due to his politicization and negligence.

Biden DOT relaxed the rules specifically English proficiency specifically to put illegals in big trucks and the blue states hand out CDLs to pretty much anybody. It's reported that this same driver tried to cross a six ton bridge in an forty ton rig in Arkansas and put it in the river. Not confirmed because he apparently has a very common Indian name.

        1. Zeb   1 year ago

Even here in NH, I've noticed there are more truckers (including those doing LTL deliveries) that can't really speak English. Seems like being able to effectively communicate with the people receiving freight should be a basic requirement.

As much as I hate cops sitting in median crossovers, this might be a good one to permanently station one at just to dissuade and catch these assholes.

The April 2023 street view image there shows a worker inspecting a section of the median guardrail that’s bent towards southbound traffic as if it’s been hit from semis making a u-turn from the northbound lanes.

This one seriously pisses me off. I do quite a bit of driving (49 states and 5 provinces) and encounter a lot of truckers on the road. The degradation in the quality of truckers has been very noticeable over the past decade in both countries, and this shit is a major reason why.

In addition, we went through a period in the 1990s when our Secretary of State was selling CDLs for campaign contributions. For those who don’t know, in Illinois (and Michigan) the Secretary of State’s office runs the drivers license program and vehicle registration. The Feds (DOT and FBI) opened an investigation into this after a high profile crash near Janesville, Wisconsin, involving an Illinois trucker and killing six children of the Willis family of Chicago. The investigation was Operation Safe Road, and it resulted in Ryan being charged, tried, and convicted. This needs to happen to all of these officials involved in getting this man, and others, their CDLs.

Washington D.C.’s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser held a press conference Monday claiming violent crime in the nation’s capital is at a “30-year low.” (Are we living on the same planet?) Here’s the kicker – the White House immediately called her out. Turns out D.C. has the fourth-highest homicide rate in the nation. Nearly six times higher than New York City. But sure, Mayor Bowser, tell us more about your crime-fighting success.

Fake news! All Democrats know their stance: oppose Trump (and further their socialist agenda). Daily tactics might vary.

    1. BYODB   1 year ago

Bowser might not be able to decide because on the one hand they can oppose Trump and probably lose their job now that a spotlight is on their terrible record, or go along with Trump to secure their city and probably lose their job because a Democrat can not be seen agreeing with Trump under any circumstances.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Of course, Bowser could actually encourage the police to do their fucking job without Federal diktat, but that is apparently a bridge too far as it would require them to do their job. They were under the impression this was a sinecure.

They aren't even bothering to pretend its not propaganda anymore.

    1. Mike Parsons   1 year ago

      Massachusetts stats:

      Voter registration: about 25% R, 75% D
      Presidential votes 2024: 36% R, 61% D

      State-House of Representatives seats:

      ....15% R, 85% D

      Federal House seats:

      .....100% D

They aren't mad that R's are doing redistricting, they are probably just mad that they already min/maxxed their districts so much, they cant squeeze another seat out of it without outright saying "ya, we are just cheating now"

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

I looked at similar ratios for all the states. If Texas, now at about a 10% "excess" of (R) US Reps, compared to 2024 presidential votes, can double that to 20%, they will still be less partisan than current House members from California.

But remember, only Republicans gerrymander. Democrats save (D)emocracy!

      2. creech   1 year ago

New England states have 21 seats in congress. None are represented by the Republicans, though Republicans get about 1/3 the vote (even if many don't bother to vote because they know their votes will not count.)

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

See, that's the way (D)emocracy is supposed to work.

Works that way where I live in Illinois. This was a solid Republican area for the thirty five years I've been here up through Kinzinger (note: no way that pathetic asshole would have been reelected no matter the map. He was censured by the party and hated by pretty nearly everyone around here). With the fat man's new map the district is solid blue. Really not much point in voting in the midterms. Maybe a Libertarian will run or a Republican who is not an asshole but it really doesn't matter.

      https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2025/08/whos-gerrymandering-whom.php

So the most gerrymandered state is New Mexico, while the least–not at all–is Minnesota. Maybe it’s a relic of the state’s good government days. As you would expect, Democrats are the kings of gerrymandering:

[O]f the 37 states remaining, thirteen deviate towards the Democrats (highlighted in blue) and 24 towards the Republicans (in red). But we also see that the average index of deviations towards Democrats is 2.5 compared to just 1.6 for those towards Republicans. In short, when Democratic states gerrymander, they do it more aggressively than Republican ones. Indeed, if we apply the actual vote shares won by Democrats in each state in 2024 to the number of seats each state has, the Democrats would gain 31 House seats in states like Iowa and Nebraska but lose 37 in states like California and New York for a net loss of six seats in the House of Representatives.

So, if representation in Congress were exactly proportional to votes cast for Congressional candidates, the Republicans would gain six seats in the House.

      Case closed.

      1. Sevo, 5-30-24, embarrassment   1 year ago

Read a report last week which pointed out that some of this is fed-gov-mandated: some southern states are REQUIRED to gerrymander to provide black representation.
Yep, good old racism; just what we need.

        1. Zeb   1 year ago

Which makes Democrat complaints about gerrymandering even more ridiculous, as they are the ones primarily supporting this kind of mandatory, race-based gerrymandering.

          1. Marshal   1 year ago

They argued to the Supreme Court that the Voting Rights Act requires all states to organize districts according to Dem preferences because that maximizes minority representation. Luckily that was shot down, but another decade without Trump and it probably would not have been.

          2. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   1 year ago

They have also sued against minority groups being too large. They demand an exact percentage that maximizes dem representation.

            1. Mike Parsons   1 year ago

Ya, I was just going to say they really want representation, until you maybe put a few too many conservative or populist minded hispanics in the same district that reliably votes blue no matter who. That's the bad kind of representation

        2. Gaear Grimsrud   1 year ago

Supreme Court is taking up a case in the next term which could be the end of racial gerrymandering. That won't end political redistricting but the Democrats will lose a tool they've used for decades.

      2. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

New Mexico is the extreme case, but with only 3 US House seats and a huge land area, they might make a statistical excuse.

As Mike Parsons mentioned above, Massachusetts, with 9 US House seats, and not much real estate, and with all 9 reps from Team Blue, is fucking people.

    3. Kungpowderfinger   1 year ago

Democrats pretending that gerrymandering isn’t a core principle of their party is probably the biggest lie they’ve pushed in years, which is showing how desperate they’ve become.

They're angry that if they redistrict they'll lose seats because of the exodus of normal folks who don't revel in delusion.

So naturally when the GOP is redistricting and are going to pick up these lost seats from blue states the democrats have to cry foul and hope folks ignore their hypocrisy.

    5. DesigNate   1 year ago

Considering the only reason they could have gained seats is because they counted illegal immigrants in the census, California can shut the fuck up.

Who really suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome?

    https://jeffjacoby.com/28780/who-really-suffers-from-trump-derangement-syndrome

    A slice:

The real Trump Derangement Syndrome shows up in three telltale symptoms.

First is the cult-like worship that treats Trump as infallible — his acolytes profess adoration not only for what he does, but for whatever could flow from him.

Emblematic of that mindset are the "Trump Was Right About Everything!" baseball caps, which the president himself prominently displayed in the Oval Office in February 2025. The caps are intended less as a joke than as a badge of faith. They echo Trump's infamous boast about being able to "stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and [not] lose any voters." For some in his base, there is literally nothing he could do that would shake their devotion. The more outlandish the president's deeds or words, the more his enthusiasts praise his strategic genius and his mastery of four-dimensional chess.

Second is the abandonment of principles that once seemed non-negotiable. Conservatives and Republicans who used to champion free trade now cheer Trump's tariffs. Those who formerly prized NATO as a linchpin of global security today nod in agreement when Trump disparages America's allies. Republicans once railed against Barack Obama's and Joe Biden's "pen-and-phone" executive actions, yet they applaud as Trump goes far beyond his predecessors in ruling by executive decree. To those afflicted with TDS, principles are expendable and whatever Trump says or does must be defended. Yesterday's bedrock conviction becomes today's expendable talking point.

Third is the unsettling delight so many supporters take in Trump's most outrageous behavior — a kind of giddy worship that equates offensiveness with authenticity. Such brazenness has been a hallmark of his political career — from mocking John McCain's Vietnam War heroism to charging undocumented immigrants with "poisoning the blood of our country" to calling for "one really violent day" to end property crime. The more extreme the rhetoric, the more MAGA true believers praised it — as if outrage were the highest form of loyalty. The Trump hard core doesn't just tolerate or excuse infamy; many revel in it.

Meanwhile, they reflexively use "TDS!" as a go-to put-down for anything from mild disagreement to serious moral critique, framing opposition not as argument but as pathology — an easy, cheap discredit. Yes, plenty of Trump-haters go overboard — but in MAGA circles, the "TDS" tag is sprayed far wider, hitting thoughtful critics just as readily as the genuinely unhinged.

Asked by the host how he keeps his "marriage solid while the entire country and the world is in your business?" JD revealed, "I actually came up with this idea, and it's one of my better ideas as a husband, is probably six or seven years ago. We do a husband-wife book club [and] we try to do it once a month."

The pair have admittedly "fallen a little bit behind," he explained "because I don't have enough time to to read." JD said, "Even during the time I've been vice president, we've done two books together and I'm currently working on the third. She's done with it. But like actually forcing us to do something together that makes us think, that makes us talk, that gives us something that we're sort of thinking about and talking about at the exact same time. And really, it came down to Hillary thinking she was the smarter of the two, and she would have been better. An unpopular cunt who wasn't elected to almost anything, and didnt really earn any of her success or her titles on her own, but still had the nerve to lecture, scold, and finger wag at us.

First lady, because she was married to Bill

Senator, completely gimme election, because she was married to Bill, would be like Michelle running in NY or CA, no challenge.

Sec of state, gifted, because she was married to Bill, and a little gift for falling in line to support O after.

Presidential nominee, after the DNC gave her the election by shanking Bernie

And ultimately, loser to Trump in the only fair fight she was ever in.

And yet, I have to hear her ideas about foreign policy, healthcare, etc. Fuck off, you horrible cunt, no one wants what you are selling.

Melania OTOH plays the role she signed up for in her loveless marriage, and frankly ill give her my appreciation for that. She is arm candy for her husband, and as first lady, she shows up when asked and doesn't annoy me with her bullshit. That's all im asking for. She stands next to her husband while he does the YMCA dance and cuts a cake with a marine saber. That's all I want from my first ladies, not some ungrateful cunt who is jealous of her husbands power and resents him thinking she could do better. If you hear Michelle lamenting her life in podcasts as of late, its the same with her as well.

Of course they still maintain that literally half the country are racist misogynists, it certainly couldn't be that Kamala was a moron that even Democrats couldn't stomach...even to beat Trump. 1. sarcasmic   1 year ago

I don't know any Dems who were happy about Harris being picked without any sort of democratic process. It's like the name of the party, you know? The only reason she got any votes was because people perceived her as less-terrible than the guy running on a platform of taxing imports and deploying federal agents across the nation. BYODB's argument is nothing more an appeal to a hypocritical strawman.

I don't really consider the lack of Dem primary an example of authoritarianism. But there are plenty of others. The lack of a primary is an example of lack of democracy, which they also cry about all the time. So I guess I agree that BYODB's example of Democrat authoritarianism wasn't a great one. We shouldn't be conflating anti-authoritarianism and democracy because they are in no way the same thing. An actual, pure, democracy can easily be quite authoritarian.

Especially given the actions of ghr FBI and DoJ and Biden increasing tariffs which Harris agreed with.

              Amusing indeed.

In sarc’s defense, he was against those tariffs too.

    The fascist bastards!
How dare they turn the District of Corruption into a place where law, order and peace prevails.

Trump's strategy seems to be showing the public what is possible so that Americans clearly understand Dems have made the cities they control shitholes by choice, just as we had open borders by their choice. Gavin Newsome even cleaned up SF once, but only because it was important to him to impress the Chinese dictator.

      I hope it works.

    2. Juliana Frink   1 year ago

Trump should issue an EO officially renaming Washington DC the District of Corruption. Just because it would be a blast watching the dems try to feign respect for, or defend the shit that goes down there.

The Trump administration issued a memo signaling it will more heavily scrutinize applications filed by legal immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship, its latest effort to tighten immigration benefits.

It expands the inquiry into whether someone has "good moral character."

I'm philosophically not a fan of this general statement and as a practical matter I think it will eventually be struck down as unconstitutionally vague. But I've already said I think we should identify and publicize the principles that will keep people from receiving visas of any type and result in their revocation if we later discover evidence of them. Those principles should include:

    1. Anyone with a criminal conviction for something that would be illegal here.

    2. Advocating political violence or supporting those who do.

    3. Advocating any type of government system which privileges some categories of people over others [Jim Crow, Indian Caste, Sharia / Islamism, Apartheid, etc].

    4. Anti-Americanism, not to include general criticisms but does include things like referring to us as the Great Satan.

YEah, "good moral character" means too many different things to different people. One of those cases where you need to consider whether you want your political opponents interpreting it their way.

Noor Siddiqui's tweet appears to regard the child as some sort if disembodied spirit and you are choosing the optimal body for it to drive through life. When it is actually a number of children being brought into existence and choosing which one gets to live and which ones are destroyed for being defective somehow.

    1. But SkyNet is a Private Company   1 year ago

Several religions actually believe that. The souls are all out there waiting for a body

      1. Zeb   1 year ago

And it's just pure coincidence that children tend to take after their parents?

    2. Zeb   1 year ago

I don't quite agree than an embryo is exactly the same thing as a child. But you make a good point about how odd a way of looking at things that is. It's similar to how many people talk about being lucky to be born in a particular place and time with particular parents when any particular individual could literally in no way have been born in any other circumstances than they were. Your particular circumstances as a child were determined by who your parents and preceding generations were and you could not have been born anywhere else. There's no collection of floating souls waiting to randomly be assigned to particular parents.

Nobody actually believes that. The fetophiles are lying when they say that.

      3. Chuck P. (Now with less Sarc more snark)   1 year ago

I don't quite agree than an embryo is exactly the same thing as a child.

That makes no sense. The only difference between an embryo and a child is time.

Zygote, morula, blastocyst, then implantation at which point it becomes an embryo. A fetus is an embryo at 10 weeks. A child is an embryo at 40 weeks. Biologically, they are all the exact same entity. That is the extent of the science on the matter. Arguments about viability are entirely philosophical.

        1. Vernon Depner   1 year ago

I don't believe you believe that.

          1. DesigNate   1 year ago

It doesn’t require belief, that’s just the terminology that has been agreed upon to describe the various stages of development prior to birth.

Kinda like baby, toddler, child, adolescent and adult describe the various stages outside of the womb.

    3. mad.casual   1 year ago

Apparently Noor Siddiqui didn't just live through the same utterly retarded, "Why wouldn't everyone just wear a mask to save everyone else's grandma?"/"Trust the science." 'two weeks' that the rest of us did.

Pinning your shitty, dishonest, scientific prognostication skills on all your future progeny, what could possibly go wrong?

There is a problem in Washington DC and the local government is hiding rather than working to resolve issues.

Washington DC should NEVER become a state, but should remain as a federal city. The land where Washington DC is located was gifted by Virginia and Maryland. Years later much of the land gifted by Virginia was returned to Virginia. A return of much of the land gifted by Maryland should be returned.

The federal city of Washington DC should not have any permanent residents. To accomplish this, return the majority back to Maryland. Federal Government offices should be distributed to all 50 states or located inside the much smaller version of Washington DC. Perhaps as small as the mall, white house, capitol hill region.

    1. Vernon Depner   1 year ago

I've been saying this for years. Government facilities only in DC, even if that means that all the federal land won't be contiguous.
