The Teamsters' Alliance With the 'New Right' Was Never Going To Work
Autonomous vehicle developer Waymo is at the center of a fight between labor unions and venture capital that's dividing the populist right.

For some prominent members of the Republican Party's populist wing, a new alliance with labor unions seems to make perfect sense.
"This is a watershed moment," wrote Sen. Josh Hawley (R–Mo.) in Compact magazine just days after Teamsters union boss Sean O'Brien spoke at the Republican National Convention in July. Hawley wrote that "O'Brien gives us the roadmap" to future electoral victories, adding, "There is much that Republicans and labor can already agree on." He's not alone in believing as much. Compact's founder, Sohrab Ahmari, wrote in the pages of The Wall Street Journal in May that "consolidating the GOP's working-class gains in a second [Trump] term would require outreach to the friendlier corners of the labor movement."
Ostensibly, that's why O'Brian was invited to speak at the RNC. Here was tangible proof of the political realignment that so much of the so-called New Right has desired—an undeniable signal of the GOP's transformation into a working-class party, or at least an opportunity to snag some of the unions' campaign cash that usually flows exclusively to Democrats. Indeed, the Teamsters backed Hawley's reelection bid and then donated $45,000 to support this year's Republican convention, which The Washington Post termed "its first major donation to the GOP in decades."
The problems with that alliance should have been evident in mid-July. In the weeks since, they've become only more so.
In the weeks before O'Brien stepped on stage at the RNC, for example, the Teamsters published a series of press releases bragging about the union's effort to kneecap the development of autonomous vehicles in California and Arizona. Specifically, the Teamsters have been targeting Waymo, the autonomous vehicle developer that spun off from Google.
As a labor union that largely represents truck drivers, it's understandable why the Teamsters is fretting about technological developments that could reduce the dependence on human beings as delivery drivers. Politically, however, this campaign puts the Teamsters directly at odds with the investors in Waymo—like venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which has poured billions into Waymo. It's also worth noting that one of the co-founders and principal investors at Andreessen Horowitz is Marc Andreessen, who is backing Trump's campaign and funding a pro-Trump super PAC.
That stands in pretty stark contrast to the Teamsters Against Trump super PAC that members of O'Brien's union have recently launched.
In short: Hawley and others in the New Right are getting chummy with the labor union boss who is leading a campaign against a project funded by some of the other most prominent figures in the Republican Party's populist wing.
Yes, major political parties always include factions that disagree about one thing or another. And, yes, the Republican Party has become rather unmoored from its principles in recent years.
Even so, it's hard to imagine how this tension can be reconciled.
Ahmari also seems to recognize that the two sides cannot coexist for long. "You can fawn over Elon Musk or you can run a populist political campaign," he wrote in an essay last month for The New Statesman. In it, Ahmari criticized Trump for undermining his populist appeal by sidling up to Musk and Silicon Valley tech bosses.
Trump is not guided by ideology or a detailed understanding of policy—but he seems to grasp that the union-skeptical venture capitalists represent the better path forward. And where he goes, the Republican Party follows.
The specific players and inside baseball of it all are less important than the general trends. If it seems impossible for the GOP to accommodate both Waymo and the union that wants to kill Waymo, then the party will sooner or later have to pick a side: Will it be a party of innovation and techno-optimism, or a cranky collection of Luddites wrapped around a labor movement that is in decline?

Which union scoundrel to cozy up to ... which one brings more bucks ... which one has more sheep to steer into the voting booths ...
As usual, the problem is a government defining its own limits, growing bigger, stealing more taxes to provide more benefits to more people.
"And, yes, the Republican Party has become rather unmoored from its principles in recent years."
Someone has not been paying attention to what has been coming out of the Democratic Party lately.
In the last 4 yrs teachers pay in NC has risen almost 20%. This was during outrageous demands and roadblocks teachers made during Covid to keep the schools shut down and now they are on strike again for more money. I have little sympathy for union thugs holding a state especially children hostage while fighting school choice at every turn.
What does that have to do with the Republican Party becoming unmoored from its principles?
The link is perfectly obvious.
Only to binary thinkers with the partisan mental illness who see someone say something about their team they don't like and shout "Whatabout the other team! Look over there! Over there! Look!"
I don't vote by party and I'm not a republican. Get another theory about me that fits the facts.
When you defend someone who responds to criticism of Republicans with “Whatabout those evil Democrats! They’re so much worse!”, I find that very difficult to believe.
I’ll go out on a limb here, but I bet that while you say you don’t vote by party and you’re not a Republican, you’ve never voted for a Democrat and would never consider voting for a Democrat.
Hey, mirror boy, what do you call someone who responds to every criticism of Democrats with "whatabout those evil Republicans?"
There’s a big difference between me saying “They both suck, vote for Chase” and your gang saying “Republicans what? Look over there! Democrats are worse! That makes it ok!”
“There’s a big difference between me saying “They both suck, vote for Chase””
Which you only do when the Democrats are undeniably caught in bed fucking a pig, and it’s impossible to “boaf sides” them with the Republicans.
It’s usually accompanied by one of your favorite strawman about how people won't support Chase because he’s gay.
Back to your piss soaked alley Drunky. Go sleep it off.
"When you defend someone who responds to criticism of Republicans with “Whatabout those evil Democrats! They’re so much worse!”, I find that very difficult to believe."
You and jeff do that. Regularly.
The link is perfectly obvious.
Sarcasmic will only "boaf sides!" when the Democrats are caught doing something unspeakably awful that he can't dismiss as a "conspiracy theory" or say "its a good thing".
But don't you dare call him a Democrat!
The Republicans invited a labor leader to speak. That’s hardly an alliance, and hardly unmoored.
Its hard to tell if Boehm is a bigger idiot than you are
"In the last 4 yrs teachers pay in NC has risen almost 20%"
Still nowhere nearly high enough to attract the best teachers. New York City pays over 50% more and the suburbs still more than that.
Conservatives and libertarians forget that even government has to deal with labor markets.
Firefighters and police officers have gotten even bigger raises in New York City. NYPD's starting salary increased by about 40%. And even so it still lags behind other large cities, the suburbs, and the New York State Police. So guess what -- NYPD has trouble recruiting. Economics 101.
“If it seems impossible for the GOP to accommodate both Waymo and the union that wants to kill Waymo, then the party will sooner or later have to pick a side: Will it be a party of innovation and techno-optimism, or a cranky collection of Luddites wrapped around a labor movement that is in decline?”
This is, of course, a silly false choice. Trump loves nothing better than to be everything to every person. People like Boehm, lecture us that Trump is not principled then scratch their heads when Trump does unprincipled things. I get it, I am a principled person, and I am always frustrated when political leaders compromise principles.
But again, Trump doesn’t really run on principles. He runs on transactional relationships. He is your bog-standard salesman. People wonder why he can puff a person up every week and then throw them under the bus the next, only to praise them again a week later. It is because he is primarily transactional in nature. You are as good a person to him, as you are useful to him.
The thing Boehm doesn’t realize is that there is no false choice here. Trump isn’t trying to lock up Big Labor- they sold him out big time in 2020 in return for Biden offering them larger tariffs than he was offering. What Trump is doing is offering incentives for people to split from the hivemind.
Boehm mentions the fact that the Teamsters formed a SuperPAC against Trump, but either foolishly or deceptively suggests that it is the Teamsters double dealing. In fact, O’Brien speaking at the RNC was a fractious event, and it has heavily split the Teamsters. O’Brien is now being challenged for his position publicly.
This is all good news for Trump, because he does not need to win the Teamsters’ Union endorsement (he never would have). What he needs is to offer enough little ponies to the truck driver members, and for them to see that in fact the Union is not necessarily united in opposition to him. He won in 2016 partially because Clinton voters weren’t mobilized, but also because enough blue collar workers in PA, GA and elsewhere defected. Winning requires enough teamsters to do that again.
"Winning requires enough teamsters to do that again"
That means attracting voters, doesn't it? An expensive and difficult task. A dangerous one, too, in a tight race. Voter suppression is the better way to go. Make potential voters confused, and disinclined to exercise their franchise, either out of fear or frustration. This has long been the preferred GOP tactic, and it's worked. Why muck it up by pandering to leftist organizations which will only rile the GOP base, which reflexively sides with owners/pinkertons/scabs over working class solidarity?
"That means attracting voters, doesn’t it? An expensive and difficult task."
Is it expensive? Politicians make hundreds of promises every election, and follow through on a tiny proportion.
"Make potential voters confused, and disinclined to exercise their franchise, either out of fear or frustration. This has long been the preferred GOP tactic, and it’s worked. Why muck it up by pandering to leftist organizations which will only rile the GOP base, which reflexively sides with owners/pinkertons/scabs over working class solidarity?"
Well way to show that you didn't read this article or my reaction to it. But yes, those evil republicans with their preferred tactic of scaring people. Like that time Republican Joe Biden told blacks that Trump would put them in chains. Or the endless handwringing about Project 2025 and the Handmaidens' Tail, and Raygun Ronnie and the nuclear war he was obviously going to start. And all those republican communists in Russia constantly screaming about the Kozzaks coming to kill the people.
Why, it's almost as if bribing, coercing, scaring and reasoning people into voting for you are tools used by every politician- some more than others.
"Is it expensive? "
Running a presidential campaign these days costs billions. That's why politicians spend much of their time, whether in office or campaigning, raising money from donors.
"But yes, those evil republicans with their preferred tactic of scaring people. "
Suppressing voter turnout is the easier road. Inclement weather makes the effort even easier.
"Why, it’s almost as if bribing, coercing, scaring and reasoning people into voting for you are tools used by every politician- some more than others."
Some politicians stress increased voter turnout. That accounts for the time and effort they put into registering voters, and trying to increase their reach through advertising. It also accounts for their opposition to efforts to introduce bottle necks that make voting more difficult, like requiring voter ID and other such measures.
The only voter turnout problem that matters is the spread of dead and phantom and illegal ones from Chicago to everywhere.
"The only voter turnout problem that matters"
That matters for the GOP. The Democrats see advantage in increasing voter turnout, whether legal or illegal. If the GOP can't benefit from an increased voter turnout, regardless of legal status, suppression is the clear choice. Suppression, and support for bottle necks and road blocks to make all voting more difficult. The GOP pandering to leftist organizations like unions risks alienating the GOP's anti-working class base.
O"Brien seemed to forget that Biden bailed out his chronically "mismanaged" pensions.
Correct. Obviously O'Brien has no loyalty to anyone. That makes him exactly like Trump.
In the choice between workers and leadership (expressed here as money men, stupidly), the GOP will be better served with workers 100 times out of 100.
In the choice between workers and money men, the GOP has been choosing money men continuously since 1854. The GOP was FOUNDED as the party of corporate welfare, not the anti-slavery party.
It’s common for large donors to fund both sides in a campaign for office, so whoever wins, they’ll have a stake. It’s possible that Congress would craft anti-robot legislation that would restrict Waymo’s competitors but not Waymo, so win-win..
The Josh Hawley who ran like a screaming little girl on January 6th? I can't take that guy seriously.
How to say you’re an lefty NPC troll without saying I’m a lefty NPC troll.
(Unless my sarcasm monitor is malfunctioning - I dont think it is here though)
He's my senator and I have no idea what this guy it talking about.
Definitely not a Lefty. Must have somehow missed the debunking of that episode.
He didn’t. That video was selectively edited to give that appearance. Also, the democrats outright destroyed much of the J6 video to cover for their lies. They should be thrown in prison for that.
That's how you know he's an MSNBC drone. When he never found out it was fake.
Must have missed that debunking somehow. Definitely not a Leftist or MSNBC viewer, ha.
I saw the debunking.
The fist bump between the cops and the “insurrectionist” vandal after they uncuff him pretty much sums it all up in a matter of seconds. The whole conspiracy right there on video. But nothing happened. Or will happen.
It definitely will of the 2024 election is stolen. It will likely get sorted out in the street. The best thing, on many levels, for democrats is to lose this election.
Becoming unmorred from principles?
That only occurs when you have any.
How about we make Google stick to their stated principle of no new co2 and apply it to their whole business. Including their ai development servers.
What do you want Google to do? Run servers with staff on pedal-powered generators? But those people also spew CO2!
Pedal powered generators? That sounds like slavery, with extra steps.
Trump is not guided by ideology or a detailed understanding of policy—but he seems to grasp that the union-skeptical venture capitalists represent the better path forward. And where he goes, the Republican Party follows.
One union that can always count on the GOP, and vice versa, is the Police Benevolent Association, the union most destructive to liberty and justice for Americans. Especially with regards to Trump. He just loves the police.
*cue the "Oh yeah, whatabout...?" morons*
I agree. And I'm not voting Democrat. Democrats at the state and city levels are joined to police unions at the hip. Those are the people who approve police union contracts that make it next to impossible to get rid of bad officers. Trump is taking a page from their playbook.
The GOP has always backed the blue. This isn’t new. It was Democrats who proposed police reform, not Republicans. It was blocked by Republicans before BLM turned it into a race issue and effectively killed the movement.
Good job Sarc. Drunk in the gutter, soaked in your own piss and vomit, but you still manage to carry endless water for your democrat masters.
Sarc hates cops, republicans, and Trump in particular. Any discussion with him will ultimately devolve into him attacking Trump. Trump, and his severe alcoholism, dominate what passes for Sarc’s life.
Police unions can count on both parties.
“*cue the “Oh yeah, whatabout…?” morons*”
Sarckles thinks “boaf sides” is only legitimate when the Democrats are under attack. He’s principled like that.
Also, accusations of “Whataboutism” are often manipulative and serve the motive of discrediting legitimate comparisons. The accusations are a form of strategic framing and have a framing effect.
Humans. Always the same. Always disappointing.
What's in it for me? (OK)
How can I twist the rules to prioritize my interests? (Not OK)
If I cooperate with this band of chimps, er, people can we change the rules the way I want, i.e. good for us and bad for those other stupid chimps? And if we have to, we will kill them. (Really not OK)
Exactly.
Some humans.
I agree. And I'm not voting Democrat. Democrats at the state and city levels are joined to police unions at the hip. Those are the people who approve police union contracts that make it next to impossible to get rid of bad officers. Trump is taking a page from their playbook.
Yeah; The rest of the world calls those RINO'S.
Be ready. Sarcles is going to endlessly shit up these threads with his TDS and ravings about cops.
Pretty silly article. The Teamsters have not endorsed either candidate yet. O'Brien says the membership is equally split and to date Harris has not met with them. Trump has. Blue collar rank and file will vote for whoever they want regardless of the endorsement. Government union members will mostly vote D no matter the candidate. Unions will dump huge piles of cash into the Ds and endorse Harris, to no one's surprise. Trump will get the majority of the working class vote union or not. Waymo like every large company will face all kinds of opposition and civil lawfare. They budget for that shit. I really don't see why any of this is particularly consequential.
There is no new right or old right or new left or old left.
All those labels are useless now.
There are those who prefer individual freedom, and those who prefer government control.
Looks around… well yeah people all over the world really like government jobs or union jobs/defined benefit pensions opposed to the risk and defined contribution the rest of us have to live with.
Bangladesh just rioted over government jobs and unions shut down urban hotel chains on a busy Labor Day holiday weekend. It’s like winning the lottery! you have to fight in the streets for those jobs.
Defined benefit pensions have a problem with the technology and capital that enables them to have jobs and defined benefit million dollar pensions? Emotional “Utopia” arguments cloud rational judgement and reason.
Obamacare is still the Fascism on the sinking gold plated healthcare pension systems.
So... is the point of this article to point out that *lol short*, the Trump camp isn't strongly backing a fight to shut down an innovative company in California and Arizona, and therefore we can more strategically and reluctantly vote for Democrats who will?
Beltway libertarianism has become such a strange animal.
Followup question, what's Harris's position on Waymo? I went to Kamala Harris's website:
ctrl-f waymo 0/0
ctrl-f califo 1/1: She took that mission to county courtrooms, the California Attorney General’s office, the United States Senate, and the White House.
ctrl-f ariz 0/0
ctrl-f teams 0/0
ctrl-f union 0/0
ctrl-f labor 0/0
ctrl-f jobs 2/2 1:The Biden-Harris administration has achieved a historic record of accomplishment, including: bringing our economy back from the brink of disaster to create nearly 16 million new jobs; 2. “Back on Track,” to give first-time drug offenders the opportunity to earn high school diplomas and get jobs, that became a national model for decreasing recidivism rates.
ctrl-f auto 0/0
Sorry guys, I got nothin' here.
I think truck drivers are smart enough to know the difference between a promised future technology or replacing their jobs with immigrants.
Tens of thousands of Venezuelans running around with AKs have been attracted to hickjacking in the past. Teamsters might not be down with that.
The Teamsters actually represent a tiny minority of truck drivers. The vast majority of members do not hold a CDL or drive a truck. It's not your grandpa's Jimmy Hoffa union anymore.
True. Lesson learned. Never underestimate Reason’s ability to just make shit up when it comes to Trump.
"The Teamsters' Alliance With the 'New Right' Was Never Going To Work."
Yeah, as if sucking up to the democrats worked well lately.
How many auto manufacturing jobs have left the US since the 1970's, and what was the Teamster's response?
"Vote democrat. They will save you your job."
How's that working out for all those former auto workers in 2024?
Bohem doesn't get it.
The democrats are worse than the republicans because they made promises they either can't keep or refuse to keep, and now the UAW members and the Teamsters are finally waking up to the fact the democrats have always been in bed with foreign nations that have robbed Americans from their jobs just as the republicans did.
At least the GOP didn't lie about it.
Here’s the open borders scum fucking Democrats in Colorado btw…
https://www.newsweek.com/widow-hits-out-over-rogue-truckers-after-illegal-migrant-kills-driver-1947656
CDL licenses, sanctuary, free housing, food and energy (paid with your taxes) and continuing to kill innocent citizens with almost no penalties
Why should Boehm give a shit? He just sits back, writes leftist drivel, counts the money from the brown envelope jobs, and votes ‘strategically and reluctantly’ for neo Marxist hegemony.
Reason is trying to convince truckers that Trump will end their jobs with technology, while refusing to mention the hordes of public charge illegal immigrants already taking and performing trucking jobs in Democrat run states.
If you’re going to both sides it, do it the right way comrade.
Checking in on today's headlines:
Trump:
Harris:
And, last but not least, the leader of the free world, commander in chief of the armed forces, J Biden:
Look. Joe Biden saved democracy buddy. When he took office inflation was at nine percent and gasoline was eight dollars a fucking gallon. A deadly pandemic was ravaging the nation. Trillions of Americans had perished and he rolled up his shirtsleeves and invented a life saving vaccine. Or something like a vaccine. Unemployment was at ninetynine percent and growing so he created billions of jobs. So he takes a two week or two month vacation to ponder Hunter's well deserved pardon. So what?
I'm still astounded that they'll openly project their animosity against the Hindu woman in the 4th seat on the second row for being too close to the stage but the half-Indian woman that got shoved into the spotlight when the lead actor forgot his lines is, obviously, just keeping the play going.
Can't wait for the articles on the many inherent contradictions in the Democrat party and their fundraising. Party of women, but they don't know what that is in order to court the LGBTQP+ activists and allies; party of Jews and Hamas just to name a few.
Huh, there was a *checks style guide* mass shooting in Chicago this weekend, there has been an arrest, but hell if I can find a single news story identifying the perpetrator.
Mcdreamy, the omnipotent deity of libertarianism, says crime is a figment of your imagination
Yeah. I heard that a former president was shot a few weeks ago. Anybody else hear about that?
If it seems impossible for the GOP to accommodate both Waymo and the union that wants to kill Waymo, then the party will sooner or later have to pick a side:
R's will do what R's always did before Trump. They will try to appeal to working class via culture war stuff and throw them under the bus re economic stuff. Trump's appeal to the forgotten man was successful only because the D's moved from class politics to identity politics in the 80's.
Maybe Trump wants to make the economic appeal longer lasting - but JD Vance (representing the VC working class), Oren Cass (representing the mgmt consultant working class), Josh Hawley (representing the prep school/Ivy League lawyer working class) ain't gonna do it.
IDK whether D's will ever move back to capture the voters that made D's control Congress for 45 years - but if they do, they'll win that demographic
During the first three years of Trump’s presidency, median household incomes rose by 15.4% for black Americans and 11.5% for white Americans.
Barack Obama may have talked a great game, but just compare even his results with Trump’s.
Between 2009 and 2015, Obama oversaw an economy in which in six years, median household incomes increased only 2.3% for black Americans and 4.4% for white Americans.
Biden/Harris
Between June 2021 and June 2022 alone, real average hourly earnings fell by a whopping 3.6%.
While the Democrats talk of equity and racial justice, Trump actually oversaw an economy in which 400,000 new black Americans workers entered the US economy every year.
That is compared to an average of just 250,000 in each year of the Obama presidency.
The most important issue that the Republicans can now push is not just how well the economy did under Trump, but how poorly it did under Biden-Harris.
Just last November, Moody’s downgraded its ratings outlook on the US government from stable to negative.
Last August, Fitch downgraded the US long-term foreign currency issuer default from its triple A rating.
In fact, the ratings agencies have pummeled Biden-Harris more than that big Algerian pummeled his female boxing opponents at the Paris Olympics.
As for home affordability: Under Biden-Harris, home affordability in the US is at its worst level since 1984.
With mortgage and inflation rates at sky-high levels under Biden-Harris, would-be homeowners are being hit from every side.
-Douglas Murray NYP
Douglas Murray is almost always great.
I don't see any alliance with any other party or segment thereof fairing any better. Unions need to link with parties on individual issues. That will also help with union leaders staying focused on the issues of their workers rather than making themselves important thru politics.
The members of the unions will experience better outcomes under Republican economic policies. The bosses? Perhaps not.
The essence of unions is collectivism. They shouldn't be outlawed, but the governments needs to get out of the business of explicitly supporting unions, all public sector unions disbanded, and the NLRB torn down. Let unions compete in on a level playing field in both the market and the mind.
But the recent turn of the Republican Party towards a pro-union stance is troubling. The (non-public sector) unions abandoned the Democrats and fled to the Republicans, but they brought with them their Leftist collectivist ways. The GOP and conservatives in general need to affirm their commitment to the free market. Which they won't do because the Republican leadership hates the market, hates free minds. They always want to tinker and manage stuff they do not understand.
The Republican Party today is the Democrat Party of the 70s. The fringe is different, but the core indistinguishable.
What the author of the article calls the "new right" is actually far left. In addition, the author manages to MISUSE nearly every important term in the article.
