MDMA tablets | JONAS ROOSENS/Belga/Sipa USA/Newscom
(JONAS ROOSENS/Belga/Sipa USA/Newscom)

MDMA not approved by the FDA: On Tuesday, an advisory panel from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected approval for MDMA to be used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). (Technically, this is not a binding decision just yet, but the FDA is expected to follow the advisory panel's ruling and fully reject the drug in August).

"The panel voted 9-2 on whether the MDMA-assisted therapy was effective, and voted 10-1 on whether the proposed treatment's benefits outweighed its risks," reports The New York Times. The result represents a huge setback for MDMA activists, clinicians, patients, and even recreational users who had been anxiously awaiting possible FDA approval and greater acceptance of the drug.

Several issues plagued Lykos Therapeutics, namely its failure to get lab samples from patients and the fact that several people enrolled in the trial refused to submit to a follow-up study meant to assess longer-term effects (and whether they'd sought the drug outside a clinical setting). A sexual misconduct scandal involving some of the therapists associated with the clinical trial back in 2018 cast a pall over the whole thing.

Members of the FDA panel raised concerns about the design of the trials run by Lykos as well as the drug's potential for abuse.

"Psychedelics present fundamental challenges to running placebo-controlled trials," writes Bloomberg's Lisa Jarvis. "The most basic is that their mind-altering qualities mean people know when they're getting them."

"Another issue complicating matters is that MDMA on its own doesn't resolve PTSD, but allows people to confront and process difficult and intrusive memories in the context of a licensed therapist," continues Jarvis. "But there are also some fundamental unknowns about what that therapy looked like in the trial—and should look like in the real world. Are certain types of talk therapy more effective than others? How much does the trust built between a therapist and patient matter to MDMA's benefits?" Therapy, of course, isn't regulated by the FDA (nor should it be). But some experts who testified questioned whether patients' mental health improvements could be attributed to the drug itself vs. intense and consistent therapy.

Though it's fair to flag these issues, it's hard not to look at this panel's rejection as colored by lingering drug war stigma. MDMA currently remains a Schedule 1 drug, with no accepted medical use (though the FDA did release draft guidance last year as to how clinical trials ought to be designed, which is a promising sign). For the thousands or possibly millions of people in the U.S. who have used the drug—on their own, outside of a clinical trial, without supervision—to combat PTSD, depression, and anxiety, the fact that the authorities claim there's no "accepted medical use" is reason to doubt not the drug itself, but the credibility of the authorities. Let's hope this setback doesn't mar future research.

Netanyahu sets sights on Lebanon: "Whoever thinks he can hurt us and we will respond by sitting on our hands is making a big mistake," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday in response to escalating Hezbollah strikes. "We are prepared for very intense action in the north."

"We are approaching the point in which a decision needs to be made, and the I.D.F. is ready and prepared for that decision," Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, chief of staff for the Israeli military, said earlier this week.

Netanyahu's government has not publicly said it accepts the U.S.-brokered ceasefire that President Joe Biden has proposed, which Hamas has indicated it is open to. Members of the far-right political coalition that Netanyahu relies on have indicated that any deal that leaves the terrorist group intact is a nonstarter. But now, Israel may be preparing to fight a war in the north as it continues a ground offensive in Gaza.

"Iran is trying to choke us and encircle us and we are fighting back directly and with its proxies," Netanyahu said, according to The Times of Israel. "We can't accept the continuation of the situation in the north, it won't continue. We will return the resident to their homes and bring back security." He's referring to the fact that many Israelis in the north have been evacuated from their homes for more than six months due to Hezbollah strikes in the wake of October 7. But Netanyahu will have to also contend with political realities—the fact that the U.S. is putting pressure on Israel to halt its campaign in Gaza—and logistical ones, like the fact that fighting a two-front war would be tough to pull off.

Scenes from New York: Congestion pricing delayed, in a surprise move by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The level of political malpractice here just astounds me:

-A congestion pricing delay outrages advocates while failing to please detractors
-The nakedly political reason for the delay makes it easy to attack Democrats from both sides of the issue
-Hochul's alternative revenue…

Politicians will commemorate D-Day, but today's world isn't the one WWII vets thought they were fighting for.

This British WWII vet asks, “What did I fight for?”, because “Nowadays, life is so different than what we expected it to be."

You can hear the lament in his voice.

        2. This American World War II vet is brought to tears thinking about his fellow soldiers who died fighting for a modern America he knows they wouldn't support.

        3. Those two World War II veterans are not alone. Their sentiments and heartbreak were shared be legions of WWII vets, and some of those vets shared their thoughts before they passed. Their thoughts can be found in this thread.

        4. Politicians will commemorate these men today, but these men knew that politicians betrayed what their friends gave their lives for.

French opposition split on Putin D-Day snub – media

Marine Le Pen's National Rally major opposition party is divided over President Emmanuel Macron not inviting Vladimir Putin to the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday.

Yesterday, speaking with members of foreign press at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin once again objected to the West downplaying the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Germany during WWII, saying that only “dishonest actors” would resort to such rhetoric.

        - Russia Today

Chumby’s experiences have been that the west downplays the CCCP’s role in defeating the national socialists and the east downplays the role of the west supplying materiel as well as eventually opening a second front.

What was North Africa, chopped liver? (Although the Brits got to sink French ships, so that's something.)

          1. Chumby   2 years ago

For sure it counts. Then the continued campaign into Italy. Putin’s assertion is the west ignores or minimizes the efforts of the CCCP including the 29 million dead and the number of national socialists they calibrated.

            1. Beezard   2 years ago

I say Crimea River. Maybe Russia shouldn’t have purposely facilitated the start of the war with non aggression pacts with both the Nazis and the japs. Or been one of Germanys main sources for raw materials while they were running amok on the west and their economy was in shambles.

And losing a zillion people doesn’t necessarily mean you won the war. It just means more of your guys got killed.

              1. Nardz   2 years ago

You faggots really need to learn that the USSR doesn't equal Russia

              2. Chumby   2 years ago

Chamberlain also had agreements with Hitler re: Anschluß and the Sudatenland. Maybe poo-poo the UK losses too as a result.

Molotov-Ribbentrop is certainly a data point and was used by Stalin (a Georgian) to delay the inevitable collision with the Germans and as a land grab for eastern Poland, which the CCCP (not just Russia) attempted a few years prior in the Polish-Soviet War and lost. It wasn’t until the Germans attacked Poland did France and the UK declare war.

US companies also supplied Germany during the initial land grab. There are reports of oil transfers during mutual hostilities. And the IBM issue...
There’s not a country that would trade places with the Soviet Union regarding their losses nor did any nation kill close to as many axis as did the Soviets. Western plus Mediterranean theatre were fewer than 900,000 dead nazis counting all allied nations versus almost five and a half million on the eastern front. The Soviets liberated Auschwitz (Ukrainian Guard?) and captured Berlin.

The non-aggression pact with Imperial Japan allowed a northern Pacific supply route from the US to the CCCP. This mutually benefited both since the Soviets needed supplies due to loss of ag workers conscripted into the army and destruction of their European factories by the Germans and the Americans/western allies needed an active eastern front to tie up German armies to allow a lesser defended coast to land in addition to dighting Italian troops in Italy instead of potentially millions of Wehrmacht soldiers.

Soviet manufacturing, especially later in the war, and US (plus other western allies) manpower were absolutely factors in defeating the national socialists, but the Red Army and US industry stand higher on the podium imo.

McDonald’s loses ‘Big Mac’ chicken trademark in EU ruling

McDonald’s does not have the right to use the term ‘Big Mac’ for poultry products after it had not used it for them for five consecutive years. Europe's second top court said on Wednesday, in a partial win for Irish rival Supermac's in a long-running trademark dispute.

All centered around Supermac's attempt in 2017 to revoke McDonald's use of the name Big Mac which the US company had registered in 1996 for meat and poultry products and services rendered at restaurants.

Hopefully each still offer mad cow burgers, regardless of what they advertise it as

      https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/05/27/the-war-on-americas-working-class/

Batya Ungar-Sargon’s first book, Bad News: How Woke Media is Undermining Democracy, was a barnstormer of a read. This was partly because it was punching up and pointing out the hypocrisy of America’s super-privileged woke journalists.

Reading Ungar-Sargon’s new offering, Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America’s Working Men and Women, was an entirely different experience. Here she explores, largely through interviews, the lives of those living at the opposite end of the social ladder to America’s cultural elites. She arrives at a distressing conclusion: for countless hard-working people, the American Dream is increasingly out of reach.

Ungar-Sargon doesn’t hide her fondness for her interview subjects. It’s not hard to see why. They are fair-minded and devoid of the woke politics and therapy-infused self-obsession that characterise so much of America’s middle and upper-middle class.

Ungar-Sargon explodes the liberal myth of a radicalised, right-leaning class of hicks intent on bringing down democracy and kick-starting a civil war. Instead, she finds a racially diverse, politically moderate working class. ‘Polarisation’, she concludes, ‘is an elite phenomenon’.

She finds light amid the gloom, too. There are still good jobs to be had for people without college degrees, she notes. Skilled tradespeople can command high salaries and, in places like Nevada where hotel workers have a strong union, even cleaning staff can get great benefits.

‘The truth is we have one party in this country that represents corporations and the Chamber of Commerce, and another that represents the educated, credentialed elite and the dependent poor’, she writes of the Republicans and Democrats respectively. There is no party willing to ‘assume a working-class agenda’.

The economic hardships faced by blue-collar Americans are compounded by the sneering attitudes of the elites, who paint the proles as irredeemably racist and backward. This is despite, as Ungar-Sargon shows, their diversity and tolerance. She describes this as ‘the slow extinction of the working class through silencing and contempt’.

      1. Rick James   2 years ago

. ‘Polarisation’, she concludes, ‘is an elite phenomenon’.

Kind of. America (and the west) is MORE polarized than ever. The differences between the elite chattering classes and regular people has grown exponentially. For instance, almost every upper middle class and wealthy person believes you can't define what a woman is. Everyone else thinks you can. That's a pretty big divide.

        1. Zeb   2 years ago

I'm pretty sure most of them would remember what a woman is if they were to, for example, find themselves in bed with a "trans woman".

On social media, it is reported that a politician for Right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) named Heinrich Koch was hospitalized after having been stabbed in Mannheim, Germany.

According to available information, Mr. Koch was stabbed by a Left-wing radical while trying to stop the thug from tearing down his campaign posters, very close to the place where an Afghan Islamist fanatic days ago conducted a terrorist attack against a PEGIDA leader that ended in a Police officer killed.

During the attack, the Antifascist militant swings a knife multiple times, leaving multiple stab wounds on the 59-year-old Koch's body.

      https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/06/05/the-mannheim-stabbing-has-exposed-the-cowardice-of-germanys-elites/
Last Friday, five people were injured and one police officer was killed in a knife attack in the German city of Mannheim. The suspect is a 25-year-old man who came to Germany from Afghanistan in 2014.

Though there were no shouts of ‘Alluha Akbar’ heard on the video taken during the stabbing, there was immediate speculation that the attacker was an Islamist. This was hardly a far-fetched idea, given that most of those injured were members of an anti-Islamist activist group called Pax Europa – a branch of the ‘Stop Islamisation of Europe’ organisation.

Yet most German politicians were reluctant to acknowledge this. While they have all condemned the brutal killing, many have also warned the public not to jump to any conclusions. Mannheim mayor Christian Specht said that we should not speculate about the motives of the suspect. The death of the police officer, he also said, showed what ‘hatred and incitement’ could do.

As much as the German commentariat would like to pretend otherwise, the biggest terror threat in Germany comes not from the likes of the right-wing Reichsbürger, but from Islamism. Just last month, police arrested two suspected Islamists for planning a knife attack on a synagogue in Heidelberg in south-west Germany. Now, in the aftermath of the Mannheim stabbing, Islamists are taking to social media to celebrate the attack. One post calls for the death of all ex-Muslims and critics of Islam.

The FDIC report further revealed that the number of problem banks totaled 63 in the first quarter, up from 52 in the fourth quarter of 2023. They represented 1.4 percent of total U.S. banks, “which was within the normal range for non-crisis periods of one or two percent of all banks.”

      “Normal” range?

The markets love this Biden economy. That’s a goddamn fact. S&P, NAZ setting new records 2-3 times per week. And the easy money spigot has been shut off.

Donnie never hit 3% annual growth with the easy money spigot turned wide open.

          Thems facts bro.

          1. damikesc   2 years ago

So, what was the inflation rate before Biden took office?

Was it 9% as Biden claims? I'm pretty sure it was not, but I bet you could tell us the truth.

Also, how did the stock market perform during the Recession under Bush and Obama? I bet it did terribly given how bad the economy was then.

Did wages keep up with inflation under Trump? I mean, they are not under Biden, are they? Inflation IS higher than wages, correct?

Ukrainians keep dying in border river, fleeing from military draft

Thousands of men have crossed to Romania by water since the beginning of the conflict with Russia, and at least 22 people have been found dead in the border Tisza river. In reality this number may be much higher, according to Romanian authorities. “Unfortunately, a lot of people drowned,” admits the Romanian border service.

Local media reported that in April of this year Ukraine’s border service began mining the (banks of the) river. On Wednesday, June 5, the first reports of mine evaders killed by mines appeared.

They died escaping their obligations to the Biden family business, where death by mine is an appropriate punishment

    1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

If you were on Telegram, you could see the raw footage out of Romania. It was a sad outcome for the young man having part of his leg blown off then bleeding out. Two other recent developments in the Trump lawfare cases. The Georgia appellate court has officially suspended the trial while they consider challenges to Fani's office continuing the prosecution. And the judge in Florida will hear arguments about whether Jack Smith was legitimately appointed to prosecute the case. Clarence Thomas actually brought the issue up in the immunity case oral arguments but Trump's lawyers didn't make the case there. Almost no chance either trial will end prior to the election and a good possibility that they'll both get tossed completely.

    1. R Mac (5-30-24, sarc’s too drunk to remember what he thinks about it)   2 years ago

Is Special Counsel Jack Smith's office Constitutional? Unlike U.S. Attorneys, he wasn't appointed by the President and wasn't confirmed by the Senate.

Congress never even authorized a Special Counsel office to exist. We shouldn’t pretend this position is legal or independent.

Meese et al argue that his appointment violates the appointments clause. Clarence Thomas at least seems interested in the issue and judge Cannon is going to hear arguments in FL. All of this may appear to be mundane procedural shit but if Smith is disqualified both the documents case and the DC case fall apart.

I will take General Kelly's statement confirming the quote.

        1. Mother's Lament (Banana Republic Day - May 30, 2024)   2 years ago

Kelly said he was quoting the Atlantic story and never once heard Trump say that himself.

Even DNC party organ Snopes, won’t verify your lie.

“In sum, the claim stemmed from a story by The Atlantic, which relied on anonymous, second-hand reports of Trump’s alleged words; there was no independent footage or documented proof to substantiate the in-question comments; and Trump vehemently denies that he once called service members “losers” and “suckers.” While it was certainly possible that he said those things, Snopes was unable to independently verify the claim.”

Video from a commemorative event shows Biden wandering around confused, looking for a toilet before resorting to shitting his pants.

Your fake story is fake unlike when the bodies of the fallen soldiers that died during Biden’s extended occupation of Afghanistan (the conflict he voted for and championed while a senator) were returned to Dover AFB. Biden kept checking his watch showing disinterest and disrespect.

"on the successful mission of the world’s largest flying object "

Is it really a successful mission when 3 of 4 test flights ended in failure? You might be a glass one quarter full kind of guy, but I'm three quarters empty.

Is it really a successful mission when 3 of 4 test flights ended in failure?

They didn’t fail you fucking numpty. Turn off the MSNBC for a second and go read about them on Ars Technica or Aviation Week.

If you do you’ll learn that:

        1. They were deliberately pushed to limits. They are early iteration experimental test platforms using SpaceX’s design iteration philosophy.

        2. Each rocket has been dramatically different from the last: different engines, different gimbaling, different heights, different staging. There are still another five of these test platforms already built for further “failures”, all different from one another. There will be more explosions because that is the point.

        3. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 program was developed the same way, had the same failure rate, and is now the single most successful rocket in human history accounting for 90% of space launches worldwide. SpaceX has now launched more tonnage into space than the rest of the world combined.

I’m so sick of these fucking midwit bien pensants like mtrueman shitting up the board with regurgitated HuffPo nonsense.

            Yes.

"I imagine that you didn’t know this, "

It's true, and I don't care nor am I interested. I thought it was amusing how you got yourself worked up over a headline telling us that a rocket didn't explode.

I was more interested in the notion that we aren't already deeply involved in and losing a two-front war. Different strokes for different folks. I'll keep commenting on the international issues, you keep an eye on the presumably communist, jew hating, Biden backing headline writers working for AP.

                  ^ This.

Soviet rocket development involved quite a few failures while testing changes/improvements.

                  "Noted."

Maybe you should write an AP headline to commemorate the occasion.

" like the fact that fighting a two-front war would be tough to pull off."

We're already in a two-front war: Ukraine and Gaza. And losing. Maybe a three-front war, or better still, a four-front war is the path to victory.
