Seattle Law Mandating Higher Delivery Driver Pay Is a Disaster
Just two weeks after the law went into effect, Seattleites had to contend with $26 coffees and $32 sandwiches.

In 2022, Seattle's City Council passed an ordinance mandating a minimum earnings floor for app-based food delivery drivers in the city. The law finally went into effect in January 2024, but so far the main result has been customers deleting their delivery apps en masse, food orders plummeting, and driver pay cratering.
The ordinance, part of a legislative package called "PayUp," was passed under the banner of protecting gig workers. By setting a compensation floor for app-based delivery drivers based on miles driven and amount of time worked, the ordinance operates as a (supremely complicated) minimum wage.
The wage floor is based on labyrinthine calculations: the "engaged minutes" for drivers are multiplied by a "minimum wage equivalent rate," which is then multiplied again by an "associated cost factor" and then multiplied yet again by an "associated time factor." Next, this sum is added to the total of "engaged miles" of drivers, multiplied by the "standard mileage rate" and then multiplied once more by the "associated mileage factor." (If you're lost, don't worry—the text of the ordinance itself literally does the math for you).
Heralded as a "first-of-its-kind" legislative breakthrough when it passed, the first two months of the ordinance's operation have provided a grim real-world Economics 101 lesson. First, the delivery companies were forced to add a $5 fee onto delivery orders in the city to cover the sudden labor cost increase. On cue, news stories started popping up of $26 coffees, $32 sandwiches, and $35 Wingstop orders in which taxes and the new fee comprised nearly 30 percent of the total.
Local news station King 5 reported that Seattle residents started deleting their delivery apps from their phones in response to the spiking exorbitant delivery prices. Uber Eats experienced a 30-percent decline in order volume in the city, while DoorDash reported 30,000 fewer orders within just the first two weeks of the ordinance taking effect.
In turn, this decrease in demand directly impacted the pocketbooks of the delivery drivers themselves. A driver who made $931 in a week this time last year saw his earnings drop by half to $464.81 in a comparative week this year. Another reported consistently making $20 an hour prior to the ordinance, only to see his earnings likewise fall by more than half since its enactment.
In other words, while the ordinance theoretically raises driver earnings to over $26 per hour—a number that ironically far exceeds Seattle's $19.97 standard minimum wage—drivers are barely logging any hours as a result of the drastic decrease in demand for food delivery. As one Seattle driver summarized: "It was dead. Demand was dead." A second driver put it more bluntly: "I've got nothin'. I'm not gonna sit here for hours for one frickin' order."
In addition to drivers, those who have been hardest hit include local mom and pop restaurants that have seen delivery orders dry up, and even the city's elderly and disabled population who often depend on affordable delivery options for meals. One might imagine that progressive politicians would be quick to repeal a law that hurts workers, noncorporate local businesses, and the elderly and disabled all at the same time, but Seattle's government officials are busy either doubling down or dissembling.
A spokesman for the mayor noted that "should the data show there have been unintended impacts for workers and small businesses, we are always open to making improvements"—a criterion which has clearly been met already—but nonetheless clarified that the mayor still "stands strongly in support" of the minimum wage ordinance.
Meanwhile, the president of the City Council claims she is "very worried" about the ordinance's impacts so far—and even argues that "it's not the role of policymakers to regulate the profit margins of companies"—before going on to say "I'm not going to redo the whole legislation."
The near future looks even grimmer for Seattle delivery customers and drivers. After passing the PayUp package, the City Council then decided that implementing the minimum earnings portion of the ordinance would require five new full-time government employees in the city's Office of Labor Standards (expanding to nine employees by 2027) and $1.2 million per year (escalating to $1.56 million annually by 2027). To fund these additional costs—as well as other parts of the PayUp package—the Council voted this past November to tack on a 10-cent per-delivery fee, which will take effect in 2025 and is projected to generate $2.1 million in annual revenue for the city coffers.
While the desire to protect delivery drivers may be based on good intentions, the solutions pushed by progressive politicians too often hurt more than help. If policy makers really want to support app-based gig workers, they should instead enact rules protecting independent contracting status while also experimenting with portable benefit models that actually could help these workers.
But given the recalcitrance of city officials, Seattle residents likely will have to resign themselves to more $26 coffees for the foreseeable future.

The Laffer curve strikes again. Why do liberal Democrats not believe in the Laffer curve. It's not theory, it a proven law - proven over and over and over in the real world.
Seriously, what's so funny about the Laffer curve?
Ask sarc to explain the Laffer curve. He describes a line. That's why people mock it. Idiots who don't get it.
They are the same people who blame corporate greed for inflation.
As if corporations weren’t just as greedy 5 years ago, and would have charged more then if it would have maximized their profits, instead of driving down demand.
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his paycheck depends on his not understanding it" -- Upton Sinclair.
Politicians get elected by promising to Solve All the World's Problems. It's impossible to get them to understand they can't.
If you don't comprehend the Laffer Curve, just ask any first year economics student the explain "price elasticity" to you. Or alternatively, consider how many times you are willing to pay twelve or fifteen more dollars to have an eleven dollar pizza delivered to you as opposed to (1) getting it yourself , or (2) just deciding to do without and keep the $ in your pocket.
that you even felt you had to spell it out so explicitly shows we've failed as a nation
that people can argue with reality and also win votes *cough**Liz Warren**cough* is a sad sad thing
Why would anyone ask that lying pile of lefty shit to explain ANYTHING?
Unfortunately, he all too frequently offers unsolicited ‘analysis’. AKA drunken gibbering.
Is has less of a wide peak than the lizzo curve?
X axis doesn't go high enough.
Laffer curve has nothing to do with this. This is the result of wage and price controls.
Leftists reject the Laffer Curve because it's based in effects higher than the first-order logic which leads to ideas including that higher retail prices on goods could only result from greed by sellers/manufacturers, that simply handing out wads of cash actually reduces poverty, or that any new tax (or increased marginal rate) will always lead to a net increase in government revenues.
As an excuse to dismiss the idea, they reject the idea of any "curve" which isn't either a straight line or is asymptotic to one, as well as the idea that in modeling the real world, it's sometimes necessary to apply a different formula to different ranges. This over-simplification of the root concept amounts to the idea that "if there's in inverse correlation between tax rates and revenues in any range, then that must mean that the theory predicts a 0% tax should produce infinite revenue", and based on that fallacious reasoning/strawman argument they pretend that the entire concept is disproved.
Follow me , please.Reason has entered the path of its demise by routinely mocking religion and moralty but trying to argue for what is the right thing. Abortion is taking an innocent life, for example.
Libertarian Argentine President Milei: Abortion is Aggravated Homicide--- he's right. Why must you be so damned blind?
Same with this...Reason has had years to write and act against this but they don't. THis is from ancient times, this very interference
IN 2012
Mayor Bloomberg has outlawed food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t determine their salt, fat, and fiber content.
SO if a law that kills baby is called infant care, Attack it
IF a law that destroys the jobs of delivery drivers Attack it.
ATTACK IT BECAUSE IT IS IMMORAL. Ayn Rand is dead, call things by their real names
That's because their namesake is the mortal enemy of almost everyone who writes here.
“routinely mocking religion”
But-but-but, this is why I’m a subscriber!
"In 2022, Seattle's City Council passed an ordinance mandating a minimum earnings floor for app-based food delivery drivers in the city."
Unfortunately for Koch-funded libertarians, Democrats will sometimes actually pretend they're still a working-class party.
But these deviations from the billionaire agenda are limited to the local level. At the national level, where it really matters, it's clear Dems understand they're now the party of billionaires. Biden's complete refusal to enforce a border is all the proof you need.
#CheapLaborAboveAll
#OBLsFirstLaw
True socialist price floors have never been tried. Democrats will get it right next time.
The next step is to make sure the delivery drivers can't be fired, even if no one is ordering anything because it costs too much.
If they change their citizenship to asylum seeker they'll get unemployment benefits. Or just identify as an asylum seeker/newcomer.
State-mandated delivery quotas for every household.
Just because a few of the incels on here compliment you doesn’t mean you’re funny. You’re the closest they’ll ever get to interacting with a woman, so of course they’ll try to flatter you.
The fact of the matter is you just look stupid to most folks. There’s a reason there’s hardly any popular conservative comedians. Conservatives aren’t funny.
Stick to your Trump criticism.
Says the person who spewed vile things all throughout the comments section for years. You may not be in the best position to critique what others say, shithead.
Incredible, isn't it. The ban-evading asshole who doxed, harassed, trolled and threatened Mormons here with death and violence suddenly thinks he can lecture.
Also, "incel" is the proggy version of "cuck".
All you leftists gaslighting as libertarians have become very angry during Joe's 3 years. Things not working out for you?
This may surprise you, but I’m not a leftist. Keep whining about imaginary voter fraud you pathetic baby.
The only person possibly fooled by that lie is you.
My Marxist aunt says she’s not a leftist too.
And I’m sure Matt Shea says he’s a patriot and doesn’t support groomers despite him encouraging sedition by groomers.
Nope. Try again. It should be mildly entertaining, as you do like to make things up.
He supported the Bundys and Lavoy Finicum. Both groomer traitors.
Pretty fucking simple.
And not to mention both the Bundys and Finicum were huge welfare queens. They try to pretend they’re these fiercely independent patriots, but their actions say otherwise.
You make a lot of things up. While offering vague accusations and no real proof or argument.
You offer nothing because you hav e nothing to offer.
Ammon Bundy took out a federal small business loan in 2010. Cliven Bundy’s standoff was over him owing decades of grazing fees to BLM. Lavoy Finicum ran a foster home that took in troubled boys. There’s no evidence there was outright abuse, but a common tactic for abusers is to take kids from rough backgrounds who will be less likely to be believed. The state removed the kids and he complained that they were taking away his only source of income.
All these men believe a sexual predator was the most important man on earth other than Jesus. They all contributed to an organization that systematically protects abusers and punishes victims.
Matt Shea supported these men.
All the gaslighting leftists say this.
The only gaslighting I see is from the conservatives smart enough to know the election wasn’t stolen, but have to lie and say it was so they can appeal to low information voters like you.
The leftist gaslighting as libs always say to trust the government, cleanest election ever, and other leftist narratives. It is a simple fact.
Asking Trump to provide evidence is not the same as saying “trust the government” no matter what.
We’re almost to the next election and it’s the same shit you’ve been spewing for 3 years.
You were so excited about that Cyber Ninjas audit in Arizona until it found Biden had been undercounted. Then you started claiming there’s no way to know therefore there was surely fraud.
He and others provided evidence. The government threatened and charged people asking for election data. Youre a statist. The only entity with the access you demand is the government itself. The entire Ga indictment is about access to this data.
Youre a state loving leftist.
He yearns for a new thousand year Reich here in the US. And given how rabidly anti semitic the democrats are, they might give it to him.
You are funny.
Thinking you have relevant comments, yet not grasping how many cheats, lawbreaking and other chicanery went on during the last election makes you a useful idiot and little more.
We will never know if it was stolen as the "establishment" refused to look into the claims .
You've never said anything funny. Your attempt at comedy is spamming the c-word like a little boy who just learned it. So I'm not buying your humor police routine.
What really upsets you is the way I make your fellow progressives look stupid. And I've already admitted this doesn't require much skill on my part. All I have to do is quote them (ex: Squirrely's admitted ignorance of James Hodgkinson) or link to mainstream sources shredding their narratives (ex: Buttplug's pro-Biden gaslighting).
But the good news is I'm done with this place once it goes full Reason Plus. The bad news is even after I'm gone you won't forget all the times I humiliated your allies. 🙂
I don’t give a crap about your criticism because it’s stupid and not funny. I don’t have any allies for you to humiliate and the only people you have humiliated is yourself and your fellow social conservatives.
Koch isn’t some commie like you make him out to be. Your whole parody is flawed.
"Koch isn’t some commie like you make him out to be. Your whole parody is flawed."
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
When have I called Charles Koch a "commie," you illiterate retard? My whole angle is that Koch pays people to support whichever policies make his inherited fortune - currently $66.5 billion - even larger.
Making silver spoon billionaires richer, even if it drives down working class wages, is the literal *opposite* of communism you idiot!
hahahahahahahah
[catches breath]
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
I've been hammering one overarching theme for half a decade ......... and you think it's calling Charles Koch a "commie"!
[clutches sides]
Oh woooooooooow. How embarrassing for you. 🙂
You better hope the Reason Plus change happens soon. I'm going to shove this idiocy down your throat harder than I do with a certain Harvard Law grad's failed court-packing prediction!
😛
You’re right. Commie was a poor term to use. My point was he only doesn’t support Trump because he doesn’t think he can beat Biden. He overwhelmingly favors Republicans however.
Citation needed. The other koch did the last one left is full on commie
It’s really easy to google who he donated to in 2022 midterms. It was Republicans!
Whenever I try to post links it won’t approve the comment.
Koch favors open borders and is a left leaning neocon statist. He would thoroughly revel in a full on fascist regime as long as he has a major seat at the table and cheap illegal labor.
There are many examples of Koch supporting policies on principle that would hurt his bottom line if enacted, not many who this is true of.
Koch's support of Haley was a big disappointment and for me has tarnished Koch, as Haley was just an establishment shill.
But the good news is I’m done with this place once it goes full Reason Plus.
What if I sponsor you?
They would raise more money using sponsorships.
What I really want is a bitcoin or anonymous non-trackable pay option like a proper libertarian website.
I don't trust rich Uncle Charles not to hand over my info to the IC for talking smack about Nikki Haley.
Who exactly do you want to kill these days? Mormons? Rednecks? Conservative comedians? Really hard to keep up. Help a brother out here.
Probably everybody who does not carry a Party card. So not only Nazis (which includes everyone to the right of Manchin, and maybe him, too) but all those useless middle-of-the-road cowards.
Why do you even post here? Do you think you are on some sort of political crusade, or does this support a masturbation fantasy?
If Seattlites keep voting Democrat --- then they are getting what they specifically asked for.
The open borders only partly are for cheap labor. The main driver is the upcoming census. So many people have fled blue states for red that Dems are importing millions to make up for the loss of population in order to not lose congressional seats
Seems like the real victims are the workers themselves who can't do much to make their time is worth what the government forces prospective employers/customers to pay them as well as anyone who's come to be dependent on the services provided by these delivery apps (unless there's a loophole and the new law doesn't apply to grocery delivery drivers for apps like instacart, who can then be engaged to pick up sandwiches and such from the "service deli" in a supermarket at a lower rate).
The highly affluent customers either don't care about high delivery fees (but also only need so much food delivery since at some point they'll be rich enough to have a private chef), or could have their minimum-wage "assistant" go back to making those kinds of pickups for them and bypassing the use of any app and/or "gig" driver altogether.
UT Texas at Austin needs the explicity recognition of God and the Bible in Western Civilization.
The Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations.
John Adams
I don't think John Adam's really said all that. UT Austin wasn't even a thing until after the Germans bombed the Alamo.
"I will insist that the Hebrews have done more to civilize men than any other nation. If I were an atheist, and believed in blind eternal fate, I should still believe that fate had ordained the Jews to be the most essential instrument for civilizing the nations. If I were an atheist of the other sect, who believe or pretend to believe that all is ordered by chance, I should believe that chance had ordered the Jews to preserve and propagate to all mankind the doctrine of a supreme, intelligent, wise, almighty sovereign of the universe, which I believe to be the great essential principle of all morality, and consequently of all civilization."

Was riffing on the lack of quotation marks, because I know hkw much everyone loves a grammar nazi. Also wanted to throw in a little Animal House flavor.
Is a good quote, though.
Sorry, I missed the joke. Should have noticed.
Question marks are optional. Ask Harvard leadership.
Quotation *
Rough morning.
It's ok; keeping track of all the white supremacist punctuation in the English language is a tool of the racist patriarchy anyway.
- Harvard leadership
Attributing your very own girl's story narrative to people who might have purely coincidentally used the same words before is patriarchal racist oppression.
Texas still requires candidates to affirm that they believe in a higher power before running for office.
The sun is a higher power. So easy enough.
It's harder than hell to get a politician to affirm that there's somebody greater than them.
If it's tied to enough votes, it's easy to get any politician to verbally "affirm" pretty much anything.
Getting one to actually believe there's a being in the universe greater than themselves, on the other hand....
It's not as if there's any necessary connection between belief and affirmation. Especially inside the mind of a political professional.
Amazon sells their Amazon Basics five-cup coffee maker for $20.54. Prime One-Day delivery is ... FREE!
Don't tell the City of Seattle that deliveries release CO2 into the atmosphere.
They already know, their next proposal to help delivery drivers is to force them to deliver in e-vehicles and require restaurants to have fast chargers free of charge for the drivers to use.
another socialism success story
Why is none of this a surprise, including the unwillingness of the Authorities to recognize economic reality?
One might imagine that progressive politicians would be quick to repeal a law that hurts workers, noncorporate local businesses, and the elderly and disabled all at the same time
...but only if one were born yesterday.
It's not a surprise in existing, only the degree of thoroughness. Really, follow that link to the text, skim it, it is fascinatingly funny, and only takes a few seconds.
Odds are they will eventually repeal the ordnance, but this little bit will have hired new civil servants who can't be fired as easily. That old joke about the school hiring a janitor, then hiring a supervisor, then hiring a payroll clerk, who also needs a supervisor, then firing the janitor when times get tough — well, here it is in real life.
When the policy goal is to destroy all vestiges of individualism, this is an absolute victory.
The intentions were NOT good.
The consequences were NOT unforeseen.
The need for more (union, I suppose in Seattle) government employees was intended.
Now all those damn uppity independent gig drivers will have to get an employee status regular hours job and fall in line.
(and most likely join a union and contribute to democrats)
I think it’s good intentions and magical thinking. The people who did this intended for drivers to get paid more and get benefits. They believe laws are magic. That rich employers would give up some of their obscene profits to pay, and nothing else would change. These are the same people who think corporate taxes hurt the rich and help the poor. They’re not evil. They’re just wrong.
Good intentions! Drink!
It is about control dummy. And marxist beliefs.
And your laws are magic is hilarious since you believe illegals crossing a border creates jobs from magic. Infrastructure grows by magic. Just hilarious.
The Seattle city council is a good example of why McCarthyism must be a cornerstone of this country.
Shut the fuck up and let the adults talk. Anyone who wants to control the behavior of society as a whole is evil.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”
― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology (Making of Modern Theology)
What's really amazing is that any of these "progressives" can also consider themselves to be the ones who "believe the science" and "follow the data".
With so many decades of worldwide empirical data proving how counter-productive their ideologically-approved slate of policy ideas has been in so many different countries, you'd think that at least some of them might actually notice the obvious pattern.
Absolutely, individualism scares the living daylights out of them. That's why they are collectivists, because they are scared to death of making decisions for themselves, extrapolate that to everyone else, realize that even individualists are just lying to cover up their own fear of making decisions, that is why individualists make so many bad decisions (such as being individualists), and it is up to the collectivists to come to their rescue.
Contra /sarc, their only good intentions are to save individualists from themselves. No different from the door-knockers come to save the occupants from having chosen the wrong religion. Nowhere is that more evident that with the ones (Seventh Day Adventists?) who believe only 144,000 souls will be saved at the Rapture, yet still try to convert more people and reduce their own odds of being among that 144,000 cohort. Pure selfless good intentions!
Meanwhile they think you have evil intentions because you hate the poors and lick the boots of the rich, while they just want to help people
Each side is righteous and the other is evil.
More irony since once again it is the dems licking the boots of the rich lol.
Always the narrative consumer are ya.
Help (homeless) people by banning giving them food?
Because it might be bad for their health?
Not eating is a lot worse for their health.
Exactly. They see a choice between what they want to ban and something better, not understanding or caring that the alternative is nothing. Same with wages.
Jehovah Witnesses. They also don't celebrate birthdays, holidays etc. I dated one once and asked her if there is such limited seating in Heaven why are you recruiting more competition? Also, I asked her to square that with John 3:16-17. The 144,000 is from Revelations Chapter 7 and 14, but it doesn't say that is only the number getting into Heaven, and further in Chapter 14 it refers to these that are virgins, etc. There are multiple different interpretations (Revelations is a difficult text, being apocalyptic and allegorical) the most common being a multitude of multitudes, all those that are saved or a certain number of Jews or Christians who are set aside as special during the tribulations. Additionally, they could also be a heavenly choir, or evangelicals who evangelize to the masses during the tribulations, and thus receive special protections. Interesting enough the JW church doesn't encourage it's members to read the Bible alone, but in groups of other members, to help them interpret it
On a related note, this same GF got mad when I 'forgot' her birthday (because I didn't acknowledge it, because they aren't supposed to celebrate it).
“it’s not the role of policymakers to regulate the profit margins of companies”—before going on to say “I’m not going to redo the whole legislation.”
But apparently, she thinks it is the role of policymakers to [try to] regulate the profit margins of the workers?
to fund these additional costs—as well as other parts of the PayUp package—the Council voted this past November to tack on a 10-cent per-delivery fee, which will take effect in 2025 and is projected to generate $2.1 million in annual revenue for the city coffers.
and of course like all taxes and other mandates like minimum wage laws imposed by local, State, and federal government officials, there was no analysis done regarding what the negative impact on the number of deliveries wold be:
City Councilman #1: How many deliveries were made last year?
City Councilman #2: 21 million.
City Councilman #1: Great. This new $0.10 tax will raise $2.1MM
Any rational person: Won’t the increased costs associated with this new minimum wage and special tax on deliveries reduce the demand for the number of deliveries and therefore the potential tax revenue raised?
City Councilman #1 & #2: Don’t be daft. We’ve done the math. 21MM deliveries multiplied by $0.10 equals $2.1MM in new tax revenue.
Any rational person: You people are morons.
Where I used to live would get their head even farther up their asses with it. They raised in the cigarette tax with the stated intention of reducing smoking, but then project revenues (and spending) based on the idea that no one would quit smoking.
And then raised it again when revenues dropped, because they had a budget shortfall for programs based upon the tobacco tax (state of Washington).
They also tried to ban smokers buying cigarettes in Idaho or force Idaho retailers to collect Washington taxes. Even had checkpoints on I-90 to see if anyone with Washington Plates had cigarettes without a Washington State tax stamp. Idaho sued over interstate commerce, and won. A surprising application of what the interstate commerce act is suppose to do by the courts.
Yeah, that doesn't happen very often. Truck drivers with non-CA emissions rigs won one as well against CA banning them from operating in the state. They can't go between points in CA, but if they're coming in from outside, or taking something out from inside, CA has to just cope and seethe about it.
To progressives, workers aren't rational individuals capable of navigating the job market and finding a position that maximizes their income while matching their skills and temperament, and working to improve those skills or develop new ones to find more lucrative employment. They are victims of the corporations, stuck in their current jobs with no hope of bettering themselves unless government steps in.
Huh. So good intentions combined with terrible economic ideas lead to bad results. Quelle surprise.
It’s the Chemjeff way. Along with all the child grooming and mutilation.
Seattle presently has the most moderate Council they have in years. This disastrous legislation came about as a result of members recently deposed from office.
Give it time. This is far from a priority at City Hall, given the drugged out zombies littering our streets and several gangland shootings each week. The upside is that if anyone were to be responsive to the problem in a city not known for its responsiveness, the newly elected Council probably has the best shot at fixing it. I'm not holding my breath.
"The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly." - A. Lincoln
"The best way to preserve a nation founded on the principle of self-government and the implied right of secession is to invade and conquer any portion of that nation that tries to secede from it." -- also A. Lincoln?
Sure. But I have zero sympathy for the Confederates. The time to secede was before the election. Far as I'm concerned, participation in an election implies acceptance of the results, whatever they may be. The slavers would have expected the North to abide by the results if Lincoln had lost.
Secession only after losing was sour grapes. The stupidity of expecting instant agreement to secession by firing on Fort Sumter only shows even less common sense.
Doesn't make war right, but sour grapes on losing the election makes secession hypocritical to the max.
Be honest, you have zero sympathy because of the slavery issue.
Participation in an election where the decided result is to fuck you in particular doesn't carry some bizarre moral imperative to abide by the results.
By your reasoning, if the Democrats decide to remove your 2nd amendment rights via the proper constitutional channels then you are obligated to disarm yourself. One wonders if you actually would, or if a tragic boating accident would ensue.
Yeah, but I ain't about to feel bad for the city or it's voters.
Dipshit Seattle Democrats knock another one out of the park.
"Just two weeks after the law went into effect, Seattleites had to contend with $26 coffees and $32 sandwiches."
Then Seattleites are idiots, with more money than brains.
Other people's money, for those who pushed hardest for the law.
The Seattle idiots are those who can't--or won't--make coffee or sandwiches themselves.

Million to one odds, no matter what Reason does you’ll complain and call them leftists.
If the shoe fits, white knight.
Is Sucktastic simping for the writers again?
He misses Mike so much he has taken up the role of Reason hall monitor.
The only job he does is one not worth doing. Sad.
And resident bottom.
"DON'T TALK BAD ABOUT REASON!!!"
That lights the Sarc signal, and is a harbinger of raging drunken stupidity.
Infinite odds that no matter what happens, you'll find some way to denigrate anybody who complains about statists.
Not even risking a penny on that bet.
I said he’ll complain about Reason, not statists.
I complain about writers that have optional sets of principles. Multiple mentions of Navalny, none on US attacks. Multople articles on mean tweets against reporters, none regarding arrests and fines under Joe.
For someone who claims to be principled, you sure do defend a lack of principles often. Usually based on if it hurts dems or not.
Ah yes. An entire narrative based upon what wasn’t said.
Is that how you justify not answering what was asked, and answering what was not asked?
Did this make sense to you? You said what I'll do. I said what I actually do retard.
2 days ago you claimed you blocked everyone. Weird.
"Did this make sense to you?"
It's the day after Friday night. I bet nothing is making sense for poor Sarckles.
Jesse, in his pickled mind, you’re what passes for his best friend in the world. He will NEVER block you.
I see you can't criticize the US arresting journalists. If a dem is president. But if trump says something youre all over it.
Speaking of Trump saying shit, starting shit...

In Ohio campaign rally, Trump says there will be a "bloodbath" if he loses November election
"And if Spermy Daniels doesn't show up on time in the middle of the night, for my assorted short-notice goings-on... Handlers and flunkies take note... There will be a BLOODBATH!!!"
The progressives envision a poorer society that consumes less, all in the name of saving the planet. Orders drying up means that people are consuming less, or at least making their own sandwiches. We think progressives are dumb and don’t realize the effect their decisions have on how people will actually behave, but I suspect they do know and that they are accomplishing what they intend.
To the rich progressives supporting the law, the higher prices aren't a burden. They just mean they will get their orders delivered faster, with fewer other customers able to afford delivery services.
Soros backed, Joe Biden appointed US Attorney knowingly lied and obstructed OIG. Has since resigned. DoJ has evidence if perjury and obstruction. No charges filed by DoJ, because it is (D)offering. Meanwhile Navarro sent to jails while awaiting appeals over perjury.

Just woke up, huh?

$34.
$32 was three hours earlier.
It’s $37 now. $34 was the weekend special.
Yeah. Auto correct. Ifferent got changed.
The "Soros backed jury" was the intriguing one. Huge if true.
Mine does that too, although mostly it goes for "different".
What a wonderful idea. Put forth with the best of intentions. What could possibly go wrong..

House May Refer Members of January 6 Committee for Prosecution
I'll believe that when it happens. But a nice fantasy.
They can refer for prosecution. Garland will just ignore it as most dem AGs do. Sure they went after Trump members and followed through. But they consistently refuse to go after referrals against dems.
It's ok; keeping track of all the white supremacist punctuation in the English language is a tool of the racist patriarchy anyway.

Hard to justify charges against people for holding a toothless grandstanding committee hearing.
Now, attempting to remove a popular opposition candidate from the ballot for an alleged crime the candidate was never charged with ought to get the interest of the Justice Department.
It's the destruction of evidence which is the issue at stake.
"Hard to justify charges against people for holding a toothless grandstanding committee hearing."
That gets a pass. It was all the destruction of evidence that is the problem.
I (somewhat) get people who choose to stay in California despite all the political insanity, what with the great climate and other natural advantages. But what the hell possesses people to stay in the drizzly hell-hole that is Seattle? (apologies to Diane/Paul)
Because they only have 5.8% black residents?
I love overcast rainy weather. Yet I still wouldn't live there.
Yeah, fuck Seattle for sure. The rural PNW is pretty beautiful though, grey skies aside.
No better place in the country in the summer.

It’s amazing how many times politicians can keep repeating stupidity.
What sector of the working free-market hasn’t politicians F’ed with and either made extinct or entirely UN-affordable with their ‘better’ plans?
Maybe what made the founding of the USA exceptional was politicians who didn’t try to F with the market.
The biggest 'stupid' humanity continues to deal with is 'Guns' (gov-guns) doesn't make sh*t and at the very root of that 'stupid' is the desire to enslave (make slaves) out of their fellow men.
Time to get rid of the democrats.
Seattle isn't far behind Portland and San Francisco in terms of deterioration from socialist stupidity. We used to take friends and relatives visiting from out of state to Seattle - to the waterfront, museums, the Space Needle and the Chihuly glass gardens. We stopped even trying long before the COVID panic. The place is nasty, dirty, dangerous and expensive. Businesses are closing up shop and moving away. I hope the socialists who demanded this mess are trapped there as the waters rise up over their heads, and that they have a moment of panic before the final darkness closes in on them when they realize that this wasn't what their imaginations pictured.

MAGA-backed Senate candidate linked to gay hookup website: report
.
Bernie Moreno, who at one point backed LGBTQ rights before turning against them, has received former President Donald Trump's support.
.
But in his wake is the existence of a 2008 profile seeking “Men for 1-on-1 sex” on a casual hookup website called Adult Friend Finder (AFF), according to The Associated Press.
https://www.rawstory.com/bernie-moreno-2667516623/
Any bites?
How about you compare black professionals to lawn jockeys again? That usually raises more hackles than when you're calling politicians "gay".
Is this more awkward for the unbiased AP or for shrike?
From Moreno attorney sent to the AP who refuses to correct the story.
16 years ago an intern at Moreno Auto created an account at AFF as a prank, which he quickly abandoned that same day. We have provided AP a copy of a signed letter from that intern, admitting to this, as well as another signed letter from a former VP of Mr. Moreno’s company, confirming this intern’s employment at the time the account in question was created. The email address in question was not Bernie’s personal email address, but rather an email address that appeared on company websites and literature and was managed by staff. Multiple people had access to it, including this intern. Bernie Moreno had nothing to do with the AFF account. According to metadata, the AFF account was never even used—there were no communications or contacts sent to or from any other AFF accounts, and no photos or content were uploaded to it. The AFF account existed for less than a half-day, 16 years ago.
That is the entirety of the statement sent to AP prior to publication. AP chose to run a single sentence from the response. Which is why shrike didn't link the AP article.
How about the news where you posted child port links here?
Even more embarrassment for shrike and the AP.

@andrewconru
As the founder and someone who wrote most of the early code of Adult Friend Finder, I want to make a short statement on Ohio senator candidate Bernie Moreno's alleged 2008 connection to the site.
I reviewed all the available information and it showed that the account had only a single visit, no activity, no profile photo, consistent with a prank or someone just checking out the site.
That's it.
The AP report seeming to claim that the available data proves the account was created in Florida is inaccurate, as location information is manually entered during the signup process. In reality, there appears to be no public geolocation data tied to the account.
It's important to recognize that even temporary access to an email account is sufficient to create a fake dating profile in someone else's name.
My sincere apologies to Bernie and anyone similarly affected by the 2016 data incident.

General Kelly on Trump's fondness for dictators:
To Donald Trump, Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán is “fantastic,” Chinese leader Xi Jinping is “brilliant,” North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is “an OK guy,” and, most alarmingly, he allegedly said Adolf Hitler “did some good things,” a worldview that would reverse decades-old US foreign policy in a second term should he win November’s presidential election, multiple former senior advisers told CNN.
.
“He thought Putin was an OK guy and Kim was an OK guy — that we had pushed North Korea into a corner,” retired Gen. John Kelly, who served as Trump’s chief of staff, told me. “To him, it was like we were goading these guys. ‘If we didn’t have NATO, then Putin wouldn’t be doing these things.’”
.
Trump’s lavish praise for Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán while hosting him at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, just days after all but sealing the Republican nomination on Super Tuesday, shows it’s a worldview he’s doubling down on.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/11/politics/trump-despots-advisers-sound-alarm/index.html
Trump’s admiration for Hitler went further than the German leader’s economic policies, according to Kelly. Trump also expressed admiration for Hitler’s hold on senior Nazi officers. Trump lamented that Hitler, as Kelly recounted, maintained his senior staff’s “loyalty,” while Trump himself often did not.
.
“He would ask about the loyalty issues and about how, when I pointed out to him the German generals as a group were not loyal to him, and in fact tried to assassinate him a few times, and he didn’t know that,” Kelly recalled. “He truly believed, when he brought us generals in, that we would be loyal — that we would do anything he wanted us to do,” Kelly told me.
#Unfuckingbelievable.
What's going on? You Joe Biden superfans told me his SOTU was a smashing success. 🙁
Joe Biden's Approval Rating Falls to All-Time Low After SOTU
"The poll also shows Trump beating Biden by 5 points in a head-to-head presidential election race (46 to 41 percent) and by 2 points between those who watched the SOTU address (47 to 45 percent)."
Yeah, I still think Biden will end up winning because of swing voters' disapproval of Trump on a personal level. And the fact that you Dems will obediently swallow *any* shit sandwich as long as it tells you what you want to hear on abortion.
But jeeeeez, how pathetic is your guy that he can't just coast to reelection on a message like Look how much better everything is domestically and abroad since I took over!

Delivery stuff like this is basically being subsidized by drivers being dumbasses economically.
There's a reason that traditionally only pizza places delivered - because the profit margin on pizza is really high.
With said said, if drivers are dumb enough to think they are making money by what they get from the app. OTOH, apps uses strong arm tactics to get restaurants to use them
For some reason the instacart reddit thread pops up for me there. Some of the shit I read there about prices and quality of service amazes me. How the hell do they have customers? App has a built in cost upper per item. Then the tip and delivery fees. People seem to be paying 30% mark up and half the time have missing items. Posts like being charged 60 bucks a lb for chicken in app with awful customer service.
Exactly as intended.
Beyond the whole 'you can't be allowed the freedom to work as you please' there's a concept called 'legibility'.
https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2010/07/26/a-big-little-idea-called-legibility/
People in government want to *run the country* but that's hard. There's a lot of stuff going on, and its going on fast. So they try to put the brakes on, slow things down, and then simplify interactions so they can understand the economy and can thus 'run' it.
So they don't want people in the 'independent contractor' category - too messy, not amenable to their control. You have IC's making deals with clients directly, maybe do a little extra work for one (and are thus 'being exploited' and so need 'protection') and you're working wherever rather than in the designated areas for work that the city government has set up.
Its so much easier if everyone was just an 'employee' or and 'employer'. People who are sort of both? Well, that's not really neccessary, is it?
This reminds me of a girlfriend.
She was smart, could have been an engineer, but she couldn't stand the idea of four years of study. So she took up astrology, with all the trappings of engineering -- formulas, books, tables, calculations.
So it is with politicians. They love the Hollywood version of businessmen, barking orders, firing people who don't perform instantly, demanding reports yesterday. They don't have any interest in putting in the hard work of actually learning a business and reading and studying those reports they've demanded. So they tell businessmen how to do their job.
Same worthless scum.
+1000000 The 'do nothing planners' of other peoples labors.
Can you imagine if we had state funded astrologers? At least right now throwing your money away on that stuff is voluntarily.
Can you imagine if we had state funded astrologers?
Ah, but we *do* have them!
“The only function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable.” ― John Kenneth Galbraith
We cal them ‘climate scientists’. Which is ultimately about as legitimate as phrenology these days.
Climastrologists.
Lol. My ex girlfriends seem to gravitate to being yoga “teachers”. (Yes, they call themselves teachers).
Keeps them in shape, plus they get to talk a lot and be in charge. Combined with the alimony and child support from the doofuses that were dumb enough to marry them, and it’s not a bad way to go for them.
People gotta do what they gotta do.
Clearly the problem is that they didn't set the fee to $1000. The ultra rich will still want delivery.
'A second driver put it more bluntly: "I've got nothin'. I'm not gonna sit here for hours for one frickin' order."'
Once again, wanna-be socialists learn that the true minimum wage is zero.
Progressives are unintelligent, they are the simpletons they supposedly loath.
Well, if they are so stupid, why are they running things?
There are two types of progressives. Goons, and masters. Goons are the unintelligent masses. Servants and henchmen to a master progressive. Masters are progs like Soros, Pelosi, etc. all can be disposed of by exposure to sunlight, a stake through the hear, and decapitation. All are soulless beasts.
Our resident leftist commenters are all goons.
(Hat tip to John Carpenter’s Vampires)
"Jordan Barker said he used to regularly get food delivered until he got the bill for an order after the ordinance kicked in last month.
“It was a huge shock,” Barker said. “I personally have stopped using DoorDash and Uber Eats,” he said. KIRO 7 caught up with him outside the South Lake Union Shake Shack – a 15-minute walk away from his home."
15 minute walk would be a 5-8 min drive. Does anyone really need hamburgers to be delivered?
Cripples? Morbidly obese groomer leftists who can’t fit through their own door.
Geez but these Dem policies are just SO bad, one miss after another. Is there ANY Dem social policy that is working? Honest question. Is it liberalism or just this current crop of liberal leaders?
And they never ever stop. To listen to trash like Jeffy, Shreek, etc., you would think everything is wonderful.
See, as a refugee of the Seattle wasteland, there's something most people don't understand about its politicians.
They truly believe you'll take it on the chin. $26 coffee? They don't even blink twice with their absolute certainty that the average Seattle citizen (or commuting suburbanite) will pay it - with tip! - because they truly believe that their constituency A) is so progressive that they want to redistribute their wealth; or B) is so rich that a $26 coffee won't even be noticed/felt by them.
This wasn't unintentional. This wasn't short-sighted economics. And when they look at people like me who flipped them the bird and moved elsewhere in response to this kind of thing, their response was, "Good riddance." Because they don't want that kind of person as their citizen. They want super rich and/or super progressive. That's the Master Race they want for their shining Emerald City. Heck, it's the Master Race the Left wants for entire Pacific seaboard. Everything west of I-5.
It's the same reason they don't care about the degenerate drug users, the illegals, the vagrants, or the derelicts. They expect that their Master Race will either virtuously tolerate them, or be so far removed as to never notice them. And anyone who does, they don't really want there in the first place.
Yup, pretty much. At least half of progs are committed to destruction. The other half don’t realize they’re being duped by the first half.
So do you live in a shithole part of Washington? Or a non-shithole part?
I realize we may not have the same idea as what constitutes shithole.
We all realize that you are a steaming pile of worthless shit. Fuck off and die.
Easy there Sevo. Why don’t you have a drink and take a nap.
Not sure why everyone is getting so excited about this...it's just Seattle, a city comprised of virtue signalers in the process of self immolation. Seattle enjoys a dwindling supply of tax dollars from the likes of Amazon and Microsoft, and they blithely spend money that's not theirs, but this cannot, and will not continue, so just sit back and give them time.
I'm interested in cooperatives owned and operated by the drivers themselves. That would be truly independent rather than depending on the owners of the app who skim off a percentage without going anywhere near a car or the customers. The same idea can be applied to many different businesses where rentiers and middlemen 'earn' their living off the backs of the workers. Prostitutes, for example, could also club together, employ receptionists and accountants, and let their pimps find more productive ways to spend their time.
The problem with this is that running a cooperative takes commitment, and delivery services seem to attract those who value flexibility above all. And desire for flexibility and commitment are probably antithetical.
You can see the left wing value system clearly in this comment. The entire system which makes the exchange economically feasible by bringing enough workers and customers together that it can be relied on by both is derided as a "rentier" and valued at literally nothing. That's why leftists are incompetent: their worldview prevents them from recognizing value if it doesn't support their ideological preferences.
This is much the same as claiming Chick Fil A must suck if the owner isn't a raving leftist. Ideology must be consulted to ensure all assertions are allowable before they are made.
"You can see the left wing value system clearly in this comment. "
Thanks. It's not as easy as it looks, encapsulating an entire system in one short paragraph. But it's not perfect, and your misunderstanding makes clear. It is the app which brings people together, and it could well be owned by the workers instead of those who don't work and live off the backs of those who do the work. It's the workers, after all, who have the most skin in the game, provided that their desire for flexibility doesn't prevent them from a desire to commit to a life of food delivery.
"Ideology must be consulted"
It's not about ideology, but money and control over your livelihood. If anything you are the one wearing the blinkers of ideology, as you've been convinced the world economy will come to an end without rentiers, middlemen and pimps.
It is the app which brings people together, and it could well be owned by the workers instead of those who don’t work and live off the backs of those who do the work
Again we see the ideological blinders in action. The people who develop the app are still defined as middlemen instead of contributors because his preferred class "could" have developed it. The result is that his preferred class is credited with what they did not do while his class enemies are defined as valueless middlemen despite creating the very mechanism than allows the process to function.
That not being sufficient he then pretends recognizing valuable contributions proves one supports those who contribute nothing. He's actually the modern journalist: someone whose assertions are entirely developed based on what supports his worldview even though those assertions are contradicted by reality. Reality simply isn't a consideration for leftists.
You misunderstand. Those who develop the app are developers. Those who own it are owners, or rentiers, if you prefer. They take a cut without doing any work. Thanks again for your kind words on my concise style. You need to work on your comprehension though.
They take a cut without doing any work.
Again, untrue. They developed a tool, the business, without which the ap and the subsequent employment and services would not exist. It is certainly impressive how concisely you prove you cannot understand reality. If I were so ignorant I'd choose something else to be proud of, but I guess your options are more limited.
You still misunderstand. I'm not talking about developers, managers, supervisors etc. I'm talking about owners, rentiers, middlemen and pimps. The people who rake in an income without lifting a finger to work. But thanks again for your thoughtful words regarding my style. So few here are as generous in their praise.
Do you understand that rideshare companies provide supplemental insurance, run customer service, and vet prospective drivers? They also negotiate deals with vendors and engage in marketing campaigns to drive demand. It’s more than just the app.
Nah, you don’t. You’re just another goon in service to a master prog.
"Do you understand that rideshare companies provide supplemental insurance, run customer service, and vet prospective drivers? "
What's to stop a cooperative from doing all that and more, with pay increases for everyone who works? What's to stop prostitutes from getting together, giving their pimps the boot, and hiring their own staff to look after the administration?
There is nothing to stop them. So they should do that if they want to. I'm not so sure about the higher pay part, though. Economies of scale do matter.
"So they should do that if they want to."
I agree. But there seems to be an instinctual revulsion at the idea of cooperatives and slavish devotion to the current regime of a wall between workers and owners.
"I’m not so sure about the higher pay part, though."
Maybe not. I'm assuming that the money currently going to those who don't work is distributed among those who do.
"Economies of scale do matter."
A city the size of Seattle is scale enough.
Right, because software development and accounting are free.
If people want to start their own delivery companies or co-ops, then great, I hope they succeed. But it's idiotic to pretend that the people providing the infrastructure and capital aren't working or adding anything of value.
You do make a good observation about what the drivers want out of it though. The reason it has been so successful and why so many people sign up to be drivers is that it is a convenient way to make some money in a flexible way that doesn't require a lot of commitment. It works really well for a lot of people. People for whom it doesn't work well should find another line of work.
"Right, because software development and accounting are free."
They are not free. They require work, and work is paid, and rightfully so. To own something is not work, but it is paid, and wrongfully so.
"providing the infrastructure and capital aren’t working or adding anything of value."
Providing capital isn't work. It's buying a stake in the operation. Workers, such as those who deliver food, get a wage for work done/time spend and that's the end of it.
Chalk this one up for a future "Great Moments in Unintended Consequences" video.
"One might imagine that progressive politicians would be quick to repeal a law that hurts workers, noncorporate local businesses, and the elderly and disabled all at the same time, "
No, why would we imagine that? All previous experience tells us they don't give a damn if the actions hurt those they claim to care about.
Seems to me like the companies added junk fees to the orders in order to sabotage the new minimum wage laws.
Based on what?
Newsflash, the companies want to deliver as much stuff as possible. It’s how they make money. Taking actions that cut your business in half doesn’t help them make money. And all it would take is one holdout to gobble up all of the market share of those companies that charged the excess fees.
You’re incredibly stupid.
LOL. Never change.
Who could have imagined that artificially forcing price increases would increase the price of things?
These lazy liberal stoner fucks can get off their asses and pick up their own foods. No sympathy.
“The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.” ~ Thomas Sowell.
ie, when you make something more expensive, people buy less of it.
