Regulation comes for us all: On Monday, the White House released an executive order on artificial intelligence which "aims to prevent the technology from exacerbating bias, displacing workers and undermining national security," per The Washington Post. But that wasn't the only AI regulation rained down from on high.
Earlier this week, the Group of Seven (G7) released a nonbinding statement on AI: "We call on organizations developing advanced AI systems to commit to the application of the International Code of Conduct."
And today, officials in the U.K. start their two-day summit on "AI safety" (which Vice President Kamala Harris is attending), at which they appear set to brand their efforts as focused on "responsible AI." British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently warned that "humanity could lose control of AI completely" but added, after all this fearmongering, that "the U.K.'s answer is not to rush to regulate." Wired called the summit a "doom-obsessed mess," which isn't far off, in my opinion.
"It doesn't make any sense to put in the same phrase that, yes, you see a substantial risk from AI, and then you do nothing about it," Dragos Tudorache, who is working to regulate AI in the European Parliament, told the Post of Sunak's comments.
As for Biden's executive order, "it's hard to see how U.S. national defense can be enhanced by slowing down domestic AI innovation," writes Reason's Ronald Bailey. "After all, U.S. regulations will not apply to foreign competitors who will be able to catch up and surpass U.S. artificial intelligence developers hampered by bureaucratic fetters."
Prominent tech-world watchers have already started rightfully critiquing the Biden administration's approach to AI:
I don't know what the right approach to regulating AI is, but one problem with this particular approach is that it means we're heading toward the government regulating private individuals' computing at an exponential rate. https://t.co/tXPtL74IqL

The new Biden AI executive order issues broad and quite amorphous calls for expanded government oversight across many other issues and agencies, raising the risk of a "death by a thousand cuts" scenario for AI policy in the US. The EO appears to be empowering agencies to…
— Adam Thierer (@AdamThierer) October 30, 2023
There's also, content aside, the mechanism by which it was done: It's not clear how the Biden administration's rules and regulations will be enforced, and executive orders are always vulnerable to simply being invalidated when a new president comes into office. R Street Institute's Adam Thierer opines that the order "appears to be empowering agencies to gradually convert voluntary guidelines into a sort of back-door regulatory regime for AI, a process which would be made easier by the lack of congressional action on AI issues." (More from Thierer here.)
Israel update: The Israel Defense Force's (IDF) ground invasion in Gaza continues. The IDF claims it took out the ringleader of the October 7 attacks and that it has "eliminated dozens of terrorists, anti-tank launching squads, [and] anti-tank launching positions." It has inched closer to Gaza City and seems set to separate the northern part of the territory from the south. The health ministry in Gaza—which is controlled by Hamas, and thus not very reliable—claims that 57 medical facilities have been "targeted" by airstrikes and that at least 15 hospitals and 32 primary care centers are no longer operating due to Israeli bombardment or having run out of fuel.
The health ministry also reports that IDF strikes which took out the October 7 organizer hit the densely populated neighborhood, Jabaliya, killing and wounding hundreds. An IDF spokesperson reports that dozens of Hamas operatives were killed in this strike.
Israel stands accused of using white phosphorus on the northern front, in Lebanon, as well as in Gaza, which Amnesty International and other human rights groups say amounts to a war crime.

The tearing down of Hamas-hostage posters just won't stop.
The message will be controlled, sometimes in the most performative manner.
I take it we're not mentioning the refugee camp here?
The camp that turned into a sink hole due to a tunnel that set off a weapons cache from Hamas?
However you want to sell it
With facts?
What do you think the penetration depth of a surface bomb is, the ones they are using? They are designed to have energy across the surface, not through it. IDF wasn't using penetration munitions in the area.
Just say you don’t give a shit if Israel bombs hundreds of civilians.
That’s the honest position, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
This is an ethnic conflict that won't be resolved until one side wipes the other out.
Nardz, you might want to direct your questions to Hamas, and ask them why their tunnel workmanship was so shoddy.
I don't give a shit if Israel kills every Hamas member breathing on Planet Earth. The world will be a better place with Judeocidal terrorists.
Uh, I think you meant "without" Judeocidal terrorists.
You do realize that Nazi Nardz is not your buddy, right?
WITHOUT!!!
(good catch - TY!)
The trouble with this is that Hamas and Hezbollah are very infamous for placing weapons caches and refugee camps together, in spite of any Geneva Conventions. They do the same with other infrastructure such as hospitals and schools. They very deliberately do so to elicit sympathy from the bleeding-heart left when such places are bombed or attacked by the IDF. It's a nasty, rotten, terrible game they play, and play all too often.
It is war. War is bad. Hamas’s practices make it even worse. They have lost my sympathy. I regret the loss of life but remember, Ghandi, mostly peacefully threw out the British empire. I also do not want to pay for either side. But I often don’t get to control what my war mongering/ moloch worshipping government does.
Ghandi could only do that because Brits had a conscince that was shocked at the acts their Government did to uphold the Empire. Hamas, thinking they are blessed by Allah, has no such conscience or compunction. Hamas never had my sympathy in the first place.
Also, Ghandi's moves did lead to the civil war of Hindu and Muslim and the partitioning of India and Pakistan which murdered and dislocated millions, so he wasn't the great shakes everyone makes him out to be.
And while our Government should only Constitutionally provide for U.S. "common defense," private citizens can and should take a stand for innocent people in any conflict, including both Jewish and Arab victims of Hamas.
They didn’t bomb hundreds of civilians. They bombed a Hamas target. The bomb triggered a weapons cache in Hamas tunnels causing a sink hole. Facts fucking matter.
If you want me to retreat to your form of hyperbole I would start calling you a Hamas supporter. But I'm not going to.
I dont give a fuck if IDF targets and kills Hamas terrorists. There will be civilian casualties as there is in all war.
But you pushing their propaganda that IDF is targeting civilians is just fucking wrong.
They bombed a refugee camp. That camp was on top of a weapons cache (though the target was originally a Hamas leader when first reported). Hundreds of Palestinians were killed.
I'm not the one trying to spin things here or inject moral righteousness.
They bombed a Hamas command center. Tunnels collapsed from that strike triggering a munitions cache. Facts matter.
You are spinning it by blaming the sink hole on IDF and accusing them of targeting civilians.
The building next to the impact strike location is still standing.
You're lying.
Be better.
It’s war. Bad things happen.
Look at Hiroshima, Dresden, etc.
Correct.
But Jesse can't admit that for whatever reason, and instead goes straight to "you're a Russian bot" tactics.
Like you labeling us all woke for pointing out the historic examples of Anti-semitism throughout the ages, that far surpass anything other groups have experienced? Chattel slavery lasted about 400 years. Jews have experienced pogroms, Massacres, genocide etc for two millennia. Persecution of whites in today society is only a couple decades, a half century at most, your so caught up in your own grievance you can't allow anyone else's grievances to be worse than you. You as bad as the woke idiots. Just from the opposite direction. Hey everyone don't dare disagree with Narrz, if you do, like he has done today, he'll label you super woke. You are full of shit Nardz. Get over your fucking self. You aren't that bright.
Yes you are.
No, you're just unwilling to accept anything that isn't phrased in Israeli government's terms.
So which is not a military target, the leadership, the munitions or their C&C? If Hamas is placing their military targets among civilians then the deaths are on them you idiot.
Who's arguing it wasn't a military target?
That's a strawman.
This is the bullshit I'm talking about saying yall have gone full woke.
Looks like IDF admitted to using bunker busters to go after the command center tunnels. Building next to the impact strike remains standing. The sink hole still caused by tunnel collapse and munitions detonation from the tunnels.
No, it is a religious war piggy-backed on top of ethnic and tribal claims between the Islamic fighters of Hamas versus people of all creeds and none in a mostly Secular Israel.
This particular War won't stop until Hamas is annihilated and religious wars in general won't stop until men stop believing in mystical, irrational, superstitious nonsense!
Fuck Off, Nazi Gott Mit Uns Nardz!
Religious wars will continue on. Humans will just turn science into religion (ala Global WarmingCoolingChange).
The two most influential religions in the US in 2023 are:
- climate change
- transgenderism
Despite these religions' hijacking of the term "science," I will not go along with that hijacking.
Stalin would be proud of them.
Science damn you!
Hamas couldn't wrap it's two cumulative brain cells around science.
And science, properly understood is not a religion. It's the only game in town for understanding the "town" that is the Natural Universe.
And no one has Jihads or Crusades over Aristotle's Organon versus Carl Sagan's Cosmos and both have a place of honor in Scientifica.
Often what people call religious wars tend instead to be power hungry leaders using religion as a cover. Take the 30 Years War, a supposedly religious war, their were protestant princes who fought on both sides, and Catholic powers that fought on both sides. The Crusades, was more about a dispute between the Pope and the Patriarch of Byzantines, and also, to employ the knightly class and nobles so they would stop fighting each other (which generally involved mass, targeted slaughter of civilians). The Pope Urban the II used the Crusades as a way to help bring peace to Western Europe (especially between England and France following the Norman conquest in 1066). During the Crusades the Church would try and enforce a general truce throughout western Europe. Almost every Crusade coincides with a preceding period of increased tensions/warfare between western powers. The Papacy would announce a Crusade and push for a 'religious' truce. The second Crusade was an almost perfect example of this. If it wasn't religion, as an excuse, in almost every single example, the wars would have occurred anyhow, because the roots were far deeper and generally far more secular. Religion has often been used as a scapegoat to excuse warfare or as a simplistic answer to very complex causes.
Ok. I don't give a shit. They let Hamas fortify around them, they let themselves he used as hunan shields. They 'tagged along' on Hamas' terror strike on 10/7.
Fuck them. Over a decade they've had self rule and this is what they did with it.
This is the correct answer.
I don’t. There is no way to prosecute a war against Hamas without heavy civilian casualties. This is by design. Hamas uses civilians as human shields. It isn’t a coincidence they have military assets around places like schools and hospitals. War is Hell and civilians get killed. We certainly killed lots of German, Italian, and Japanese civilians during the war.
If civilians in Gaza don’t want to die, then they need to get rid of Hamas. Case closed.
Wouldn't be the first time Hamas and Hezbollah put weapons caches in refugee camps. It's basically their fucking modus operandi.
Based on the information out, Hamas had put the refugee camp over one of their weapon storage tunnels.
And “camp” is doing a lot of work here. I don’t consider multi-story, permanent structures a camp.
Ghetto?
Probably the most accurate.
Not that it really matters one way or the other whether the informal municipality located itself over the autonomous wartime collective or the autonomous wartime collective located itself under the informal municipality.
Whether the perp grabbed a human and used them as a shield or ducked behind a human who was standing there, a human shield was employed.
I think his point is that the informal municipality is more of a city that's been there for years than some tents erected this week to house displaced Gazans fleeing the Israeli counteroffensive.
Correct. And my understanding is it’s actually been there for decades, not just years, but I’m not sure about that.
And my point is neither causality nor the terrorists nor the Israelis nor the law nor morality care how old the human shield is or how long her skirt is.
Hamas is in charge. Whether they knowingly or accidentally built an ammo dump underneath a favela or luxury highrises or whether they built an underground ammo dump and the favela or highrises sprung up on top of it, the buck stops with Hamas.
I, for one, welcome our new AI/Skynet/Colossus Overlords!

Perfect illustration of how Hamas is Amalek. There is nothing to negotiate with Hamas. They will die violent deaths. The world will be a better place without them.
I hear surprisingly little about Americans killed, or held hostage. Why?
Because they don't primarily identify as Americans?
I remember when Iran took hostages in 1979. It was on the nightly news every fucking night. Then throughout the 80's, lots of coverage. Now...crickets. Almost like they are forgotten.
Is there even a list of names of the hostages?
The other fun fact about the 1979 hostage taking.
They were released the day a republican walked into the oval office.
That was because the Iranians really, and I mean really hated Jimmy Carter. I know it's hard for some to believe, but because Carter 1) allowed the Shah in for treatment, 2) wouldn't return the Shah or his body, and 3) did Operation Eagle Claw (which failed miserably), they really hated the man.
None can play in the WNBA, non-story.

I don't know.
Since we're counting people in Gaza who aren't being allowed to leave, but aren't necessarily in direct Hamas custody, I'm guessing the "500 Americans" are Israelis and Palestinians who happen to also have American citizenship because we hand it out like candy to some types
>>aren’t being allowed to leave, but aren’t necessarily in direct Hamas custody
lolnope
Dual citizenship with another nation is perfectly legal under U.S. Immigration Law, as long as the nation is not at official, Constitutionally-declared war with the U.S..
Fuck Off, Ignorant Nazi Nardz!
My hypothesis is either/and:
1. Our IC says 0 chance of rescue.
2. The corporate press has correctly assessed we are so divided most Americans don't care that Hamas might murder US prisoners.
They're ignoring it to not tank Biden further and Democrats in general. If there is a rescue or return it will be a miracle out of the blue.
We would have heard about them 20 or 30 years ago when there was still a small remnant of a legitimate media left in this country.
But now the media are so out there on the extreme far left and so desperate to prop up the dismally incompetent failures in the federal bureaucracy and the democratic party that we basixalky can no longer trust a single word they say. They knowingly tell outright lies and cover up truths in the service of their masters.

Right.
But instead we'll have a bunch of people bitching about the poor Palestinians and a bunch of people bitching about the poor perpetual victim jews in attempts to out passive-aggressive each other.
If you study history, since about AD 70, the Jewish people have been persecuted and victims more than just about any other group/identity. During the first Crusade, against Muslims mind you, Crusaders massacred Jews across Europe even before they left for the Crusades. Pogroms through out Eastern Europe, especially in the latter 19th century. The Holocaust. Israel attacked four times by its neighbors within 25 years of gaining independence. And that's just the worst examples. We could include things like France and England during the 14th century expelling all Jews (mainly because the nobles didn't want to pay back their loans they got from Jewish lenders). Forced conversion, often through torture during the inquisitions (there was more than one, the Spanish was just the most famous) and even after conversion, many were put to death by torture or burnt at the stake as heretics. Anti-semitism written into common law through the 19th century in England (Irish Catholics received emancipation before Jews in the UK). Jews being denied entry to many universities as policy during the first half of the 20th century. Jews fleeing Germany after Krystalnacht being turned away from so called liberal democracies, and sent back to Germany. The list goes on. You say is snidely, because??? but in your snark you actually are speaking a figurative truth. Despite centuries, millennia of persecution in Europe and later America, often codified in law, Jews mainly succeeded through there own hard work. Long before the Civil Rights movement and Civil Rights Act, Jews were prospering and making a difference. Hell, one even advocated for our Independence but was killed fighting against Tory and Indian forces on the South Carolina frontier before he could sign the Declaration of Independence (he was a congressional representative from South Carolina to the 1775 and 1776 Continental Congress, and served as head of the ways and commerce committee in 1776).
It's almost like they're special or something...
They were outsiders, even in their own province inside the Roman Empire. Judean law often conflicted with Roman law and cultures. Unique among conquered people, they were monotheistic, and refused to acknowledge any other gods. Romans, as a way of integrating conquered peoples, would integrate the conquered polytheistic gods into the pantheon of Roman gods. Their was cults of Isis throughout Rome, an Egyptian goddess. The Cult of Mithras, originally a Persian God, was very popular with legionaries during the latter half of the empire. But the Judean God was the one true God, in their pantheon and wouldn't be properly assimilated into Roman culture until Rome became officially Christian, and that wasn't a direct integration from Judean religion. Another group that has had a similar issue in Europe are the Romani/Gypsies. They faced much the same legal and cultural (often overlapping) official and unofficial prejudices as the Jews. And the Nazis went after the Romani almost as hard as the Jews. For almost the same reasons.
So you have an insular group who live or move into an area, segregate themselves from their neighbors, and routinely hold themselves above the sovereign's laws...
And we're calling reaction to this "persecution"
They were fucking conquered by the Romans dipshit. They didn't ask to become Romans. They didn't hold themselves above the law. God you are so stuck on labeling anyone who dares disagree with you 'woke'. You can't seem to comprehend you might (and in this case are) wrong. Yes, Jews in Europe had it much worse than just about any group. The examples in history are so replete only someone who is willfully blind can ignore it. The fact you ignore all the examples I've given and try to go with snark suggests you know you're wrong but won't admit it. Basically, you're just as deluded as Sarc or LyingMikey at this point.
And just FYI, generally Romans allowed conquered peoples to continue their own laws, except for state matters. The Gauls rebelled against the Romans, so did the Britons, the Germanic tribes etc. Jews were the only ones Rome expelled from their homeland after rebellion. You're so fucking convinced of your own infallibility that you simply can't accept others pushing back against your preferred narrative. Just like the fucking whining wokesters on campus. You're just like them. Don't allow facts to get in the way of your preferred narrative.
Sounds like their problem, not mine.
Nardz has 99 problems and dead Jews ain't one.
Nardz wouldn't sully himself by citing Rap music. His ilk considers Rap to be "degenerate."
And none of that persecution had to do with religion, right?
*Ducks and waits for the deluge.*
I'm sure that will work.

Under what authority was this EO issued?
No authority. None of them are.
What outrages me about most EOs is not their stupidity, but that everyone seems to take it for granted that the President has, and should have, that power.
I believe one of the best things you could do to the Constitution is get rid of the President. Put Congress in charge. Well, I'd get rid of Congress too, but aside from that ...
"one of the best things you could do to the Constitution is get rid of the President."
^This. America doesn't need a king.
if they followed the constitution there could be a president and he wouldnt be king
Yes, but to do that we would need a Supreme Court that not only rolled back the Chevron Doctrine but also started issuing rulings that curtailed Federal overreach (read: abuse) of the Interstate Commerce Clause, as well as some sensible limits on what can and can't be done via Executive Order. Ergo, we'd need to return to foundational Federalist principles. With a dollop of libertarian spirit thrown in, I would hope.
The executive order cites the emergency powers of the Korean War-era Defense Production Act as the justification for imposing federal regulation on AI technologies.
Another law that needs to be revisited and repealed.
Why should laws even need to be revisited to get repealed? Shouldn't that be the other way around, where if a law doesn't get revisited and re-passed after, say, 10 years it's automatically nullified?
I wish. All laws should have sunset clauses.
I think 10 years is a good starting point for an automatic sunset clause. That gives you the chance to re-elect every member of congress in the mean time.
Biden's daily sunset clause of 4pm might be a bit much.
I have long wanted a Constitutional Amendment to this effect. All federal laws must be reviewed, then renewed, revised or reneged every ten to twenty years (I have said a max of twenty years but ten works as well, maybe better). If they want it to be permanent go through the Amendment process.
This along with a balanced budget amendment (with a clause for exceptions during constitutionally declared wars) and HOR reapproproation based on population growth, not a fixed number of Representatives based on the 1910 census.
Stop asking questions. He recognizes the constitution - one true libertarian.
The fytw clause
The executive order cites the emergency powers of the Korean War-era Defense Production Act as the justification for imposing federal regulation on AI technologies.
De facto authority, backed up by a bottomless pit of resources to fight any legal challenge and a lack of personal risk for anything they do.
I support any and all PEOs! Congress is too slow to react!
If you acquire a large amount of compute, you must disclose “the existence and location of these clusters and the amount of total computing power available in each cluster.”

The general statement is sound, but the homeowner still ought to know better than to put out a bowl of candy on Halloween and just assume that some assholes won’t empty it on their own and leave nothing for anyone else. I lived in the 80s in a surburban whiteopia, and anyone doing that still would have found it cleaned out in short order.
Yeah, kids are shitheads, all times and all places.
There were two adults stuffing their pockets in the vid.
If it was me (it wouldn’t be because I wouldn’t have just left out candy) I would put the adults faces on a flier that says “This is why there was no candy for your children when they came to my house” and distribute it all over town/social media and maybe even in the local community paper if it had a decent number of subscribers.
local community paper if it had a decent number of subscribers.
OK, Boomer.
That said, yes. Tell the whole world.
Except, I'm betting these people weren't from that neighborhood. Just came to the rich housing with their kids because they give away better candy.
I'm glad their faces are fully visible. Broadcast how the two heifers are total shits and raised shit children.
OK, now I actually watched it. Charming. Kids with shithead parents are the biggest shitheads.
My college age neighbors put out a bowl of candy at the end of the walk on a wrought iron plant stand pedestal. 30 minutes later, the whole thing was gone.
Candy, bowl, plant stand . . . I don't think kids were interested in the bowl or stand.
I've done that for years, never had my basket stolen though. Ive seen some years where its gone in the time it took to shower and leave my house and others where it is left nearly completely full. I leave no instructions though; as far as I'm concerned to the victor goes the spoils.
And 10,000 Chinese grandparents out to gather anything they could!
From the comments:
“but they need to steal all that candy to feed their families!”
That’s silly. The Apple Store is where you go to steal bread for your starving children.
Look, the "on your honor" fruit stand went out with my Grandparents. People who leave candy out like that should view it as a disposal method for staving off future Diabetics in the house.
And for the record, the Founding Fathers and the philosophers of The Enlightenment were not "high trust" when it came to people holding Ecclesiastical and Political power. They certainly wouldn't trust the likes of you.
And "The Boniface Option" sounds pretty cheek-turning if you ask me, so they wouldn't trust that either.
Fuck Off, Nazi Nardz!
I see those kinds of fruit stands all over around me.
Where? And for how long do they last? And are Lead pipes still used in the plumbing?
🙂
😉
I run across them all over rural Michigan. I assume you’re referring to Flint with the pipes? That’s only within the city limits, where a honor system fruit stand would most definitely not work.
Had a sweet corn stand half a mile down the road for 25 years. Never showed up this year to my great disappointment. Never actually met the farmer. Maybe he or she just got too old to deal with it. Every time I saw anybody there they were putting cash in the box. I always did. It was so cheap pretty silly not to. Don't know how anyone would steal a trailer full of corn but I imagine a few ears were unaccounted for. Hope they'll be back next year.
Only when plumbing your head!
Almost makes you wonder those old wives' tales about candy laced with poison and broken glass weren't useful... if that worthless imaginary wall you tore down yesterday didn't actually have a purpose that everyone had just (conveniently) forgotten about.
How about not hiring G.K. Chesterton to do construction or engineering, and tell him to “Move, Bitch! Get out the way!”

Oh, and teach your children to ask politely for things instead of scaring the shit out of them with urban legends that nowadays could easily turn into pogroms.
"at least 15 hospitals and 32 primary care centers are no longer operating"
Is it just me, or does 15 hospitals sound like an awful lot for an area that size with a population of 2 million-ish? My metro area is about twice that size and I think we have maybe 10?
Every 1/2 day another hosptial runs out of fuel and must close. Over 50 hosptials will be shuttered by Christmas.
Life is to go on as usual during a war.
I thought the same thing last week. Started to look for similar size areas/populations to compare, then gave up.
The have a lot of little hospitals convienetly located next to their weapons cache
Any first aid kid in a terrorists kit counts as a hospital.
Sounds like those Antifa rioters with their velcro [PRESS] patches.
Well, I mean are we speaking technically or in propaganda terms here?
If it's out of Hamas, then I'd go with "propaganda". Their lies make Shrike look halfway believable.
The Israelis aren't much more credible.
This, like in all conflicts going forward, is another one where you have to do the math and figure out what probably happens for yourself.
The Israelis are actually putting out evidence for their cases. They come off as much more credible than you think.
Except the Israelis are good and Hamas is evil. It really so that simple.
Hamas? Am I the only one who remembers like two weeks ago when we had a hospital floating in the harbor at New York saving something like 20 people's lives?
Don’t forget all the tents.
Just for information purposes a MASH unit was rated at 25 beds. A modern day Combat Support Hospital, the modern day equivalent is around 200 beds, a forward surgical team is around 25 beds but isn't supposed to operate for longer than 24-36 hours (until a CSH can begin setting up and taking patients).
Not that it matters, just providing information (I served in a Combat Support Hospital, and we could establish and set up 25 acres of hospital, with 200 beds (two ICU, an ER and multiple ICW, typically four) and four operating suites in 72, and start taking patients in under 24 hours of hitting the ground). It's a pretty spectacular thing to see when it goes right (with is all about making sure it's packed correctly before you leave home post, something which I got to be a pro at since I was signatory on our two ICUs in my company).
And when get multiple CH-47 coming in (a CH-47 can carry 20 litter patients or 40 ambulatory patients/troops) and a couple Blackhawks (six litter patients give or take). It actually does, even in training, look a lot like the triage scenes in MASH (only it's the nurses and medics doing triage not the doctors, who are already scrubbing up at that point, the rule was from triage to medevac to a fixed facility in under 24 hours).
The funniest thing I saw was during JRTC at Ft Polk, this Lt Col nurse didn't want to take our advise to stand behind the downdraft barrier on the edge of the airfield when we were getting in Chinooks and the first pilot landed right on our edge of the field (we had four coming in) and flared just before landing and blew that damn light Colonel ass over tea kettle across the ground. I think that damn pilot did it on purpose too. Don't mess with the warrant officers.
Now, that would have been funny to see.
Pretty sure warrant officers are the godfather's of the E-4 Mafia. I had a CW4 who would vouch for me when I was shamming, trying to avoid busy work. He was head of supply and I was assistant bio-med NCOIC (which most of the time made me acting Biomed NCOIC) and when first sergeant come around, chief would start discussing Biomed supply, etc to make it look like we weren't taking an extended smoke break. And boy howdy did he live up to the caricatures of senior warrant officers, out of shape, with a coffee mug in his hand everywhere he went and a half cigar in his mouth nearly constantly (often unlit) and you only ever saw him in the smoke pit or mess hall, but he knew where all the bodies where buried, even more so than the E-4s did.
Not that it matters, just providing information
Yeah, I'm not entirely clear on how Hamas would frame the bed-to-tent ratio for their anti-Vietnam War propaganda.
The HQ beneath was the target. Any human shield above deserved thir fate.
Democrats now have 26 lawsuits in 26 states trying to keep Trump off the ballots for 2024. I would like some of the J6 defenders explain to me how this is not as or more insidious than trump challenging fraudulent ballots in court.
https://www.lawfaremedia.org/current-projects/the-trump-trials/section-3-litigation-tracker
Witness professor at Colorado version of the trial states Trump used the word fight 20 times, something that has never happened and showed violent intent. Trumps team shows him a video of Democrats constantly using the same word. Witness dismisses democrats calling for people to fight.

Fair.
"Why do those rubes think the elections are not on the up and up?
Now, how to disqualify the leading Republican candidate from as many states as humanly possible?"
Average progressive
Cynically, I have wondered if the goal is to incite another riot so the left can point to the threat of right-wing extremists. A lawsuit removing the voters' choice absent an actual legal due process is going to push plenty of people into a fury.
If any of the lawsuits succeed, there's a risk of some very drastic repercussions.
The judge in the Colorado case even donated money to a PAC dedicated to removing any conservatives at J6 from ballots. She is claiming amnesia and didn't recuse.
Is there a link?
https://dailycaller.com/2023/10/30/judge-declines-recuse-trump-2024-ballot-case-donation-anti-gop-pac/
Just quickly googled. Other sites have reported as well. Generally don't post DC links.
God damn. She already issued a protective order, essentially a gag order, against Trump.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/judge-overseeing-case-to-remove-trump-from-2024-ballot-issues-protective-order-amid-fear-of-threats-intimidation
I don't see how that could possibly stand. There's no criminal element to this hearing, it determines whether Trump can be on the ballot. That is solely a matter of political concern, and therefore it is illegal to silence discourse on it. You can't silence people from discussing issues of political or public concern.
Judge should be sanctioned or removed from the bench for this order.
Judge should be sanctioned or removed from the bench for this order.
With a rope... leveraged by a lamppost.
They can do whatever they want. Who’s going to stop them? Have you not noticed this yet?
This. There are no repercussion for government leftist activists.
Impunity is how they are allowed to operate.
If any of the lawsuits succeed, there’s a risk of some very drastic repercussions.
Yeah, there's nothing stopping some right-wing group coordinating with red-state government officials from doing the same thing.
The center-right (who brought the lawsuit, with the help of a left-wing lobbying group), and their left-wing allies demonstrate once again that they have no future-time orientation whatsoever.
This is one of the ways they plan to get rid of Brandon.
At this point, I'm kind of assuming that is the case. That, or the absolute panic of the men behind the curtain who have no idea how to regain the control they've always had over both parties and are using the most ham-fisted way possible. Maybe both.
I've decided in the upcoming election I marginally support Trump more than Biden, but only because I want the democrats to clearly be responsible for starting the civil war.
but only because I want the democrats to clearly be responsible for starting the civil war.
Wouldn't be the first time they started one.
Brandon is disqualified for aiding and abetting the Taliban in 2021.
Where are the lawsuits against Brandon?
At least they're concentrating on Trump instead of Libertarians for once!
It doesn't make any sense to put in the same phrase that, yes, you see a substantial risk from AI, and then you do nothing about it...
Hopefully when we're ruled by AI, Skynet isn't a "do something anything" type of overlord.
Long thread on the intersection of marxism and antisemitism. Antisemitism in 1930s Europe stemmed from anti capitalist beliefs. Quotes from Mussolini, Marx, and Hitler. Also shows once again that the fascism of that time originated from the left and mimics the left today.
https://twitter.com/ian_mckelvey/status/1719166853514215660
How do you explain the Bolsheviks then?
What do you mean? Lenin had a Jewish great-grandfather but Trotsky was the only actual Jew.
Are they not Marxists themselves?
Nardz, Communism predated the existence of Jews by millennia. It came from a primordial time when man was in survival mode and knew little about the world and the resources it afforded and had little luxury of time to explore it, so men had to pool their meager huntings and findings together and a Big Kahuna Chiefie-Weefie distributed the mouse take.
I'm only so glad that man progressed and discovered new resources, new methods of combining and using them, and new methods to produce and preserve surplus wealth. Every innovation keeps the position of Big Kahuna Cheifie Weefie away from the likes of you.
Fuck Off, Nazi Nardz!
There are useful idiots in any cause. Quotes from Marx were in the thread.
How do you explain our independence? Didn't you know one of the leading advocates for Independence was a Jew, Francis Salvador, who also happens to be the first Jewish soldier killed in service of the US.
Scumbag murderers end on top because most people don't stoop that low.
"Unclear what Harvard's new antisemitism advisory board will do, exactly."
Encourage and excuse antisemitism, just what it sounds like.
They will redefine the word. Usual practice. Just like KJP said antisemitic violence isn't necessarily domestic terrorism.
They need a dean of anti-semitism to teach the kids how to do it right and they've been training just the marxists to do it at $200k/year.
Why should "antisemitism" not be excused when they're actively promoting anti-American, anti-white activity already?
Why is "antisemitism" special?
Dude, who here has excused anti-American or anti-white activities here? Pretty sure ML has explicitly criticized it repeatedly. You’re following the Ken path with this.
More like he's following the Rob Misek path, with only slightly less delusion and more conscious evil.
That isn't true, and I see the point Nardz is trying to make, but in his demands for libertarian ideological purity he's being unfair.
He's insinuating that I'm tacitly agreeing that prejudice against white people is excusable, which also isn't true.
I don't think you feel prejudice against whites is excusable.
I think you feel "antisemitism" is worse and won't think about how singling out "antisemitism" just strengthens woke ideology.
I think you also ignore how many Jewish people crying about antisemitism now have been a large force in pushing woke, and they will go right back to their crusade against "white supremacy" to reinforce in-group bias and marginalize regular Americans who don't have the benefit of an ethnostate to fall back on.
No where in any of his posts has he made a determination on which is worse or which is better. He has clearly stated both are happening. That is the extent. The only one inferring which is worse is in your posts.
Thanks Jesse. We've all become some great amorphous blob of all-the-same-opinion to Nardz.
I may as well be Pluggo.
"I think you feel “antisemitism” is worse"
No.
Although historically it has been worse. Much, much worse.
"singling out “antisemitism” just strengthens woke ideology."
No. That's a ridiculous assertion. Just ask any woke Harvard student what they think about Israeli Jews.
In European history (and by extension the anglosphere) Jews have been one the most brutalized victims of prejudice in our history. The only other people that may come close are the Romani, although they don't appear in European records until around the 11th century, and most anthropologists/archeologists, believe they didn't migrate into Europe until around 1000 AD/CE. By that time, the Jewish diaspora had been subjected to European distrust and often outright hostility for about seven centuries.
The sacred perpetual victim narrative must be preserved.
It's not narrative, it's fucking history.
"No.
Although historically it has been worse. Much, much worse."
I rest my case.
Full woke.
Not even close. The wokeists side with Hamas. Never mind the fact that the Jews have undergone persecution since biblical times.
soldiermedic76 has it right, that’s not narrative, that’s history.
If Nardz were a Libertarian, he wouldn't make light of anyone being victims of anyone and he wouldn't accept racial, ethnic, and religious war as if it ain't nothin' but a G-thang and a chicken wang!
Nardz is a Nazi and a dickhead besides!
You're not really in a position to talk since you've got a beef against Jews along with all religious groups. I've so respect for such people.
The most vocal supporter of Ukraine should be careful who he disparages for supporting Nazis.
??
And I'm pretty fucking sure jumping on board the "much antisemitism" bandwagon is going to fuck over regular Americans like it ALWAYS has been used to do
Pointing out truth in the Reason comments isn’t going to have an effect on that one way or the other. The propagandists don’t need us to create propaganda, they’ll just lie anyway. Actual antisemitism should be called out just like any other bigotry. Also, excusing actual antisemitism gives credibility to their claims that it’s on the rise.
Why should any "bigotry" be called out?
People are tribal. Double standards for when it's ok or not isn't good.
When it leads to violence and triggers the NAP.
I’ve called out bigotry in many forms here before, and will continue to do so. Whether you like it or not, bigotry towards Jews has resulted in violence against them.
I can acknowledge that Israel uses it for propaganda, and still call it out. I don’t adjust my beliefs based on other people’s behaviors.
Goes both ways.
You realize Jewish identity is FUNDAMENTALLY bigoted, no?
If some Jewish identitarians show up here and spout bigotry I’ll call them out too.
Would you care to share why this particular group of people enrages you so much?
+1,000
Bigotry, in all its forms is evil. Rather it's anti-black, anti-white, anti-Semitic, anti-christian, anti-muslim etc. And Anti-semitism is one of the oldest and hardest to destroy. It always seems to come back. From AD 70, till the present, the western world every two or three generations tends to demonstrate a propensity for violence and discrimination against Jewish people that simply is unique in its predictability. Fuck, the wording and charges are almost the same as those used by Edward the 1st to expel Jews and confiscate their property for the crown, or by the devotees of the first crusade who perpetrated the Rhineland Massacres in 1096 (by the way the main protectors of Jews at the time was the Catholic Church, who often sheltered Jews trying to escape the violence of the peasant Crusaders, who were not church sanctioned Crusaders). It rarely ever changes, Jews control the world, Jews are greedy, Jews manipulate governments (Jews are communists was one of the main planks of a certain Austrian failed painter, BTW). The Jews bring it on themselves (another trope that is had been used through the past two millennia).
Was watching an exchange between Piers Morgan and Jordan Peterson where it was pointed out that the Jews are a successful minority which is why they pass through cycles of not being tolerated by the majority. Aligns with modern antisemiticim arising from the progressive/marxist world-view which is rooted in destroying the target of your envy.
Makes me wonder when we are going to start seriously turning on Asians.
those fuckers hit Hawaii again & it's Katie bar the door.
Lol.
Since they failed at that, didn't they try to get us with transistor radios instead?
corrosive 9-volt battery acid scarred many children of the 70s but I had not thought of radios as a weapon until now
"Bigotry, in all its forms is evil."
Unless it's The Chosen People?
No, it includes "The Chosen People". Why are you excusing bigotry against them?
The persecution of Jews dates even before AD 70. We can see this during Old Testament times and in the Books of the Maccabees. People have wanted the Jews gone for a very long time.
That doesn't even make sense.
“You’re following the Ken path with this.”
It looks more like Chapelle’s feelings toward both Trans people and Jews. Chapelle has beefs with both communities, some of which is for comedic effect, but the biggest part of it for him comes down to those “special victim” groups getting to cut the line in front of his (black people). And he isn’t completely wrong there, but where he gets stuck is that no amount of special privilege (of which there is a metric shit ton) for black people will ever be enough. All of the above groups (especially black people) are getting kid glove special treatment in society, with the recent shift of the cultural left wing against jews being an exception (as they were previously “one of the good” whites).
The only people that it is acceptable to openly shit on in western society is poor whites. They aren’t getting cut in the line, they are being told to leave the line all together, and to ideally take a shot in the nuts while they are on the way out. I think that’s where Nardz sentiment is coming from, or at least how I read it. Still not an excuse for the flagrant actual anti-semitism the left has ramped up for their favored oppressed brown people though.
Thank you.
And it's a bit motivated as pushback/balance to the extremely biased narrative commenters are pushing here.
I don't respect the Palestinians' claim to victimhood, why should I respect the Israelis'/Jews?
All peoples have been persecuted at some point. Guilt-tripping is a fundamentally disgraceful tactic.
I will ppint out you just above claimed IDF was targeting hundreds of civilians. You are in fact pushing their victim hood narrative.
This is the bullshit that causes people to dislike both sides of the war.
Nowhere did I claim the IDF targeted civilians, but you need me to have taken that position to justify your sense of moral righteousness.
>>All peoples have been persecuted at some point. Guilt-tripping is a fundamentally disgraceful tactic.
these are the only words you needed to post for the last month.
People in large groups are calling for the extermination of jews. Including in our country. At universities like Harvard, and in the streets of NYC. This should alarm you. It is not like anything else.
I’m referring to Ken becoming hyper-focused on a single pov of a conflict and attributing bad intentions to anyone saying anything that doesn’t align with that pov.

The health ministry also reports that IDF strikes which took out the October 7 organizer hit the densely populated neighborhood, Jabaliya, killing and wounding hundreds. An IDF spokesperson reports that dozens of Hamas operatives were killed in this strike.
It's almost like both things could be true. It's as if Hamas hides within civilian population areas.

Fauci needs to stand before a Nuremberg-like court for crimes against humanity.
Anthony Fauci-run lab in Montana experimented with coronavirus strain shipped in from Wuhan a year before Covid pandemic began
Anthony Fauci's crime is not that he was funding or overseeing medical research on diseases, let's be clear. His crime is actually in the lies and cover-up and the breach of public trust. I think Anthony Fauci is the highest grade of evil, but it's not because he wanted to perform gain-of-function research.
Yes, it was banned by law, but the fact that it was illegal is not what I consider a moral failing. It's also illegal to perform any research into potential medical benefits of psychedelics, or even to study the effects and toxicity of those. These types of laws aren't pinned to a moral foundation, they're flexible. Congress could change their mind tomorrow and decide that gain-of-function research is vital and should be legalized immediately, assuming it's performed under appropriate precautions. And you can argue that it's not-at-all beneficial, and even the most minimal risk is too great when weighed against the non-existent benefits, those are policy decisions.
Fauci's crime is the lack of accountability. He absolutely believes that gain-of-function research is necessary, he's written papers in favor of it. He issued internal directives in 2017 to lift the ban on gain-of-function research. He's such a believer in it that he pushed to fund it in a country that is a notorious polluter with often questionable health-and-safety measures. But when confronted with the evidence that he'd been funding it, he didn't offer a principled defense of what he did, he lied. He called everyone else a liar. And he used his position of authority and public trust to hide and obscure the truth, even using the force of government to silence people speaking the truth. Social media was warned to banish this disinformation because it was dangerous to people's health, but it was him using his position of authority to cover his own ass.
And that's just the beginning of his COVID-related crimes. He lied about the effectiveness of masking even though he knew that it was of limited or non-existence public usefulness because he needed to be seen doing something. But his job is not to do "Something," it's to offer honest, truthful medical information, even if that medical information is not comfortable. He pushed for public health policies and recommendations to shut down schools, to shut down stores and churches and the economy, with zero scientific basis. He didn't weigh the potential balance of harms, and when called out for the fact that a ton of shitty policies came about, he hid from it and pretended he wasn't responsible, that he just made "recommendations."
He's an evil fucking man, but it's not because he wanted to fund gain-of-function research.
I'll concur. Fauci's problem is the lying and his crime is the lying. It's why we pound so hard on the trolls here when they lie. The lies get passed on and believed by those who don't know better and lack the information and tools to know better. The average population knows jack shit about how masks work and how viruses are spread. Fauci handed out lies about both and then caused a panic about it. The left loves to talk about shouting "fire!" in a crowded theater, yet Fauci did exactly that in March/April 2020.
Psychedelics can’t escape the lab and infect unwitting people. Otherwise agree.
>>it’s not because he wanted to perform gain-of-function research
it's because he gets off testing his insanity on large swaths of the active population. dude cannot be allowed among us anymore.

Fauci needs to stand before a Nuremberg-like court for crimes against humanity.
And summarily executed.
I was watching a compilation of highlights of the "experts" begging forgiveness for their Covid policies. What really burned me was the lack of sincerity. "We acted on bad information" is always the excuse. It's never, "we should've questioned the information".
Meanwhile, my father died alone, forbidden visitors.
Fuck every one of these mother fuckers.
I wouldn't even clock him for the numbers of deaths, because who the fuck knows at this point what the actual number of COVID deaths even really were, given the blatant number-fudging that took place due to the financial incentive to do so. I'd be clocking him for the absolute socio-economic trainwreck that took place as a result of his recommendations, and how the vast majority of the medical profession just parroted his declarations with no actual scientific rigor whatsoever.
I wouldn’t even clock him for the numbers of deaths, because who the fuck knows at this point what the actual number of COVID deaths even really were,
Even beyond that, whose to say that Wuhan wouldn't have been conducting the same experiments in the same shoddy fashion with the same resulting exposure absent the NIH funding? So I don't necessarily find fault in Fauci for it. It's the lying, being the spokesperson of government propaganda to cause great social harms, that what the issue is. And his utter refusal to face accountability for any of it.
Yeah, as you said, what's particularly notable about Fauci is that he spent his career vigorously defending the utility of gain of function research, to the point that he used a front group to fund it through the backdoor. But when Rand Paul put the guns on him, he denied everything that he spent his career fighting for, because he fucking KNEW that the public would be angry that he went around restrictions that kicked off a global pandemic response that's still fucking up the basic functioning of most of the advanced world order.
I was unable to visit my dying brother not because either of us had Covid but because of the insane protocols. And I am pretty much convinced that it was the Fauci jab that killed him.

Elon on Twitter:
“The degree to which Twitter was simply an arm of the government was not well understood by the public,” Musk said, adding “And it was whatever, everything was like Pravda basically, a state publication, is the way to think of old Twitter. A state publication.”
No wonder ENB was so butt hurt over Elon buying twitter. Thank god she is gone from the roundup.
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/elon-musk-twitter-was-completely-controlled-far-left
He’s never gonna get FAA permission slips talking like that.
The fact that the writers here explicitly ignored and excused the story and mocked people who were vocal about it, tells us that an editorial decision was made to do so.
Charles Koch has hijacked our magazine and foundation.
I remember when supposedly "conservative" commenters like Popehat and Patterico left Twitter in a huff specifically because Musk stopped aggressively censoring right-wing accounts. Patterico eventually came back because like most of these pompous peabrains, he's a fucking addict and also realized he couldn't get any followers in the fediverse (which Popehat, to his credit, honestly couldn't care less about).
And all it took was Musk taking the platform from an overtly left-wing enterprise colluding with Democrats in the government to serve as a de facto mouthpiece for the party, into one that's more politically neutral in moderation than it used to be. Which shows that the center-right's only real principle is genuflecting to whomever controls the cultural status quo at any given time.
That aside, Twitter's new function where the posting timeline is all out of order for viewers that don't have a Twitter account, and the elimination of response threads to tweets, is annoying as fuck, although it's illuminating to see the hot takes of establishment bobbleheads through the last 3-5 years.
Honestly the US doesn't deserve Musk.

Lawyers for both and for other Jan. 6 defendants argue the law is being misapplied. The controversy could soon wind up before the Supreme Court.
A look at the novel crime construction. A favorite of banana Republics everywhere.

I'm sure Sullum is thrilled by this and cannot possibly fathom how it could ever be misapplied (again).
I still want to know why 1/6 protesters were brought up on charges of interfering with a government event or some such nonsense --- but Bowman was not.
He specifically did it to prevent a vote at that moment. All 1/6 people did was interrupt a --- according to all the people who know and such --- purely minesterial act.
Or all the people that stormed th he congressional floor for a number of leftist causes over the years.
The lawfare being waged by government prosecutors against anyone connected to Trump is surreal. If we can believe the polling, all of this is only making Trump more popular. It's about time SCOTUS got involved.

Will there be lingering effects of this "summer of strikes"?
Summer of Rage, Whiteboy Summer, Summer of Strikes... I can't wait to see what we declare next summer.
The summer when democracy died?
(assumes Trump conviction on something, followed by mostly peaceful demonstrations, followed by "deferring" the election)
Sounds like a summer of Democracy Fortification to me.
Summer of nuclear holocaust?
Well, that's one way to not have an election in 2024.

Elon Musk: “The degree to which Twitter was simply an arm of the government was not well understood by the public, It was a state publication.”
Good work defending state censorship, Reason.
We should be having ticker tape parades for this guy.
It really is a Randian/Francisco d'Anconia sort of situation where he bought it away from the government at a sizable loss just to denationalize it and expose all the propagandists and sycophants.
Yeah, that's a big reason the center-right was so ass-blasted about him picking it up to begin with. These people absolutely do NOT want to make any kind of real waves against the government or the left-liberal status quo, have no interest whatsoever into digging behind the curtains to the same extent the left-wing press does, and always believe these departments have nothing but the best of intentions, even as they disingenuously assert their supposed desire to eliminate them.
"Speaker Mike Johnson says the federal government used Twitter to censor American's speech:
"Twitter was basically an FBI subsidiary before Elon Musk took it over... The Twitter files should be a matter of bipartisan concern for every member of Congress and every American citizen because it is a bedrock principle of our Constitution that the government does not get to decide what speech is acceptable or true."
Good thing a libertarian magazine like Reason is all over the biggest attack on American free speech by the government in history.
I’d be happy if they just hadn’t been one of the most ardent defenders of it. Well, happier anyway.
Don't worry, they'll be denouncing Mike Johnson for this attack soon enough.
I've been seeing craploads of headlines trying to make him look bad already.

Is there some allegation that people are being radicalized, EN MASSE, by a YouTube algorithm? This paper seems to be addressing a straw man.
That qualifier "en masse" is carrying a lot of water here.
Yep.

Not for Israel

Trudeau doesn't know what he's going to even snort tonight. Deputy Prime Minister and former WEF board chair, Chrystia Freeland, is the one currently in charge of destroying the country.

Governors ask the NCAA to stop allowing men into women's competitions.
https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_edf9857c-77ef-11ee-8c61-43980323c20a.html
Nine governors are asking the National Collegiate Athletics Association to rewrite its policy on transgender participation in sports, saying it is unfair to female athletes.
The NCAA updated a 2010 policy last year that requires transgender females to show they have undergone a year of testosterone suppression treatment. Testosterone levels are also checked before competitions.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and eight other governors cited University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines as an example of why the policy is unfair.
"The decade of hard work and the countless hours spent in the pool were suddenly wasted," the governors said in an Oct. 30 letter to the NCAA. "Riley's lifetime of achievement was ripped away from her by someone who shouldn't have even been in the race – all for a photo op."
"Science proves that it is fundamentally unfair for a biological male to compete against a biological female – that does not change when someone declares themselves as being of a different gender," they said. "The National Institutes for Health found that there is on average a 10% difference between the top performing males and females in athletic competition. In high-level athletic competition, a 10% difference is massive – and can even be insurmountable."

Banner also said he painted the word "HUFFY" on the side of his bike, ensuring he has no advantage over the bikes that came out of the factory as bicycles.
LOL!
Suddenly, women aren’t equal to men?
Not at all suddenly; they never have been.
Yet somehow no governor has the balls to withdraw all state colleges from the NCAA.
Noem already caved on this by refusing to sign the bill that would have told the NCAA to go fuck itself.
Gender is a construct so these athletes should all just go compete in men's events.

https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/americans-panic-search-give-car-back-subprime-auto-loan-delinquency-erupts
Recent data from Edmunds reveals that an unprecedented 17% of American car purchasers now have monthly car payments of $1,000, a significant increase from just 7% three years ago. This trend highlights the extent to which consumers, despite being financially stretched, are willing to take on massive auto debt in these uncertain economic times as macroeconomic headwinds pile up.
New Google data, first revealed by X user CarDealershipGuy, shows Americans are searching "give car back" on the internet has soared to a record high.
CarDealershipGuy added, "For everyone DMing me: No, you can't "give back" a car - That's a repossession."
The giant raises given to auto workers will solve this problem.
Generally when someone has a car payment that high, it’s because they didn’t pay off their last car and rolled the old debt onto the new debt.
So they’re not that financially responsible in the first place.
Do you have a citation for that?
No, but I can get one with a quick Google.

From your link.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, 17.4 percent of new car purchases with a trade-in had negative equity rolled into the new loan.
That is not generally. It is a minority.
Fair enough. Prices have gone up since the last time I looked into it.
Even so, it's still a lot of financially irresponsible people.
We can add “generally” to words sarc doesn’t know the definition of.
Added. Pretty soon ill have a standard dictionary.
That's the way it's been in the past, but car dealers have been called out recently for massively jacking up the cost of vehicles above MSRP--as much as $10-20K in some instances. Even Carmax is trying to sell used Toyota Rav4s for $40K. The inflation has gotten way out of control and we clearly have a bubble situation going on here.
I didn’t realize that when I made that reply. As I said to the jackass above, things have changed since the last time I looked into it.
I about lost it when I saw that Ford dealers are trying to sell F-150s for $80-100K. I mean, gtfo with that nonsense.
One YouTube guy I watch who's a used car dealer has been following this a lot, since he obviously has a vested interest in it. He noted that the cars he gets at wholesale auctions have doubled in price--say, a car he used to get in 2019 for $1-2K and could sell for $4K, is now going for $4-5K. So he has to sell it for $8-10K so he has enough cash on hand to re-stock. He talked in one video about how his dealership had gone through a couple of dry weekends when they didn't sell anything, so he bit the bullet and lowered his prices. He ended up selling 11 cars the following weekend and said, "Dealers, if you want to get rid of your stock, lower your prices."
This isn't like housing in that the supply isn't near what the demand side is like. The dealers appear to have over-extended themselves trying to get a LOT more than what their supply will actually bring in, and their inventory is just gathering dust on the lots. I'm sure there's been some suckers and desperate people just giving in, but if the lots remain packed, we'll see that bubble pop eventually, especially if the employment to population ratio takes a shit.
Cash for Clunkers resulted in the destruction of 677,081 vehicles.
Cut the supply of something and the price increases. Econ 101, which I’m sure everyone involved in the bill took at some point.
I know people in the car sales business, and they all say the same thing: Cash for Clunkers killed the used car market.
I remember defenders saying "Those are cars that are going to be scrapped anyway!"
In reality those were the cars that poor people drove because it was all they could afford.
Yeah, C4C was an absolute disaster for the used car market. One of those galaxy-brained concepts the Good Idea Fairies in academia and the political lobbying industry always come up with that sounds great in theory and turns to shit in reality.
And you're right that the argument that the cars were going to be scrapped anyway was absolute bullshit. It was a clear incentive to get poor people to buy newer cars and inject more liquidity into the market. The vast majority of the cars turned in (which ended up having some kind of crystalization sludge injected into the engine so the car could never be used again) were never actually "clunkers" to begin with. People got more value out of dealerships that offered "push, pull, or drag" deals.
Yep. Never heard about the sludge though. I was told that they had to drain the oil and run the engine until it seized.
I think Carmax in particular really fucked itself by giving inflated offers to people with used cars for vehicle trade-ins or customer-to-dealer sales, during the last year when used vehicle prices went through the roof. So now they're stuck with an inventory they can't turn, because no one is buying cars from them at the inflated prices they're setting because they overpaid for their inventory.
monthly car payments of $1,000
And that's only enough to finance a 1987 Honda Civic with 150,000 miles.
Did they think this was going to be as warm as Venezuela?
https://abc7chicago.com/migrants-in-chicago-news-how-many-to-help/13994774/
Thousands of migrants living outside police facilities are facing real dangers and risks as temperatures drop below freezing and snow squalls sweep through the city.
For many migrants, including some of those outside the CPD 3rd District station in Grand Crossing near 71st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, this is their first encounter with cold weather. Many new arrivals are without heavy coats, gloves, boots and indoor shelter.
About two-thirds of people on Earth have never seen nor experienced snow.
About two-thirds of people on Earth have never seen nor experienced snow.
While some of us deal with it for 5 months out of 12.
Fucking snowed here last night. Got a good inch.
Thats what Ms Clause said.
Yeah, we had on and off snow squalls during trick-or-treating. Seeing the pictures on the illegals on Twitter up in Chicago made me wonder what they were thinking when they decided to go north. Did they think everywhere is as warm as Venezuela?
They'd freak out if they went to someplace like Houghton in February.
You mean they didn't bring immigrant sheep herders, herd sheep here with them, bring fellow immigrants to spin yarn, and other fellow immigrants to weave jackets to both clothe and sell themselves into prosperity?
It's kind of funny how the political and scientific side of the ideological spectrum that invented ideas like Gray Goo and Ecophagy suddenly don't get the concepts they "invented".
>>Many new arrivals are without heavy coats, gloves, boots and indoor shelter.
jobs, legal status, identification ...
Give a bunch of illegal Venezuelan immigrants a police station and they'll be warm for a few months.
Mostly peacefully bar the doors and set that police station on fire and they'll stay warm for the rest of their lives.
Turns out there's no fourth-season tents you can pitch on Chicago's broad shoulders.
Yep snow here in northern IL yesterday and wind blowing it into a blizzard. No real accumulation but no way was I going out in that shit. Whoever talked these sorry bastards into coming to Chicago obviously doesn't live there.

The ceo of the company that made ChatGPT is 100% on board with this stuff, just fyi. I just need to get this out there so when Reason goes "why can't the government just leave the innovators alone", It's because "the innovators" are asking the government to pull its hair and slap its ass.
Just to clarify, the CEO of OpenAI doesn’t want the government to pull it’s hair and slap its ass, it wants the government to do that to any upstart competitors it might face in the future. OpenAI will be spared this treatment through the judicious use of bureaucratic discretion, which will be completely unrelated to the large sums of money they donate to the right PACs.
Like Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI will ask for regulations on itself that it can navigate, but upstart competitors can't or don't want to. That's the fig leaf of "respectability" these Silicon Valley CEOs always go for.
