French President Emmanuel Macron said the government should have the power to shut down social media during civil unrest. Macron made his remarks following riots after police shot a teenager dead during a traffic stop. "We need to think about how young people use social networks, in the family, at school, the interdictions there should be…and when things get out of hand we may have to regulate them or cut them off," Macron said during a meeting with mayors. A government spokesman later said Macron was not calling for a "general blackout" but for "occasional and temporary" suspensions of social media. Some government officials have said rioters used social media to organize their activities.

Is it ironic that so many of the major protests/riots in the last few years in France, especially the "Yellow Vest" demonstrations, have been happening in opposition to policies like increased fuel taxes which are directly connected to compliance with the "Paris Accords"?

It has to be ironic that so many of the leftists in the USA who celebrate those protests are the same ones who went ripshit when the last President announced the "withdrawal" of this country from an non-binding agreement which has never been taken up for ratification in the Senate. Admitting that we were never actually "in", or that with it being non-binding there's no meaningful difference anyway never once seems to have occurred to any of them. Further, any recognition that the US was and still is the only "industrial" country which wasn't previously communist and was actually reducing CO2 emissions (as well as toxic solid waste) at the time would mean recognizing an environmental benefit from fracking, which made NatGas so cheap that it replaced coal in many boiler-driven power plants still operating here, thereby reducing their emissions per MW/hr generated.
