Florida Bans Medical Marijuana in All State-Licensed Rehabs and Sober Living Houses
Some patients, especially those with opioid addictions, could actually benefit from access to medical marijuana.

Last week, Florida legislators passed a law that will narrow the state's medical marijuana eligibility. While the change might seem marginal, it's a step in the wrong direction.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a leading contender in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, signed S.B. 210 into law. The bill pertains to substance abuse treatment programs licensed by the state, like rehabs or sober living residences. It adds language to Florida law that beginning in 2024, licensed treatment facilities must enforce "a prohibition on the premises against alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs," and prescription medications not prescribed to the person taking them. The text further clarifies that it "includes marijuana that has been certified by a qualified physician for medical use."
Medical marijuana use in an addiction treatment or sober living facility is controversial. Cleveland House, a South Florida sober house, states on its website that if one resident is smoking pot, it could negatively impact another resident's recovery. But studies increasingly suggest that marijuana can help alleviate symptoms of opioid addiction. Men's Tribal House, a sober living facility in Utah, actively incorporates medical marijuana use into the recovery plans of half its residents.
In 2016, more than 70 percent of Florida's voters chose to expand the state's medical marijuana program. Under previous state law, only patients with "cancer or a physical medical condition that chronically produces seizures or severe and persistent muscle spasms" qualified, and only for doses low in THC, the principal psychoactive component in cannabis. The 2016 ballot measure, later passed into law as S.B. 8, expanded eligibility to include a variety of conditions like Crohn's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anything that caused "chronic nonmalignant pain."
DeSantis himself has given conflicting statements on the subject of medical marijuana. Last month at a presidential campaign rally, he bragged that his state's program provided access to veterans with combat-related injuries, but he continued, "It's very controversial, because obviously there's some people that abuse it and are using it recreationally."
Regardless of one's opinion on the wisdom of letting the newly sober smoke pot in treatment, the decision to allow it or not should be up to individual medical professionals, not the state.

Does this new law allow that? I get the impression that it doesn't.
Just goes to show you that Republicans are not libertarians. They may the best thing you'll get compared to the other politicians in the field, but they have always been pretty reliable drug warriors- to no good end.
I do have to take issue with this:
"But studies increasingly suggest that marijuana can help alleviate symptoms of opioid addiction."
First of all, it's symptoms of opioid withdrawal, but since Reason's editors are asleep at the wheel and can't even correct basic typos, I guess we let that one slide.
Second, that's just a silly justification. I understand that the medical marijuana angle was needed as a wedge to force open the door to legalization, but we should recognize bunk rationalization when we see it. Any symptom of opioid withdrawal is treatable without getting people hooked on another drug that is out there. I have seen this same silly argument being made by people supporting kratom, as if it is desirable to have a bunch of people exchanging one addictive drug for another.
Again, this law is the stupidest aspect of this story, but the reasoning here is a close second.
as if it is desirable to have a bunch of people exchanging one addictive drug for another.
I know someone on methadone to deal with heroin addiction. It's a lifetime maintenance thing.
I guess he thinks it's better than smack, but fuck man. What's the good of not being addicted if you HAVE to take a different opioid every day?
"Just goes to show you that Republicans are not libertarians. They may the best thing you’ll get compared to the other politicians in the field, but they have always been pretty reliable drug warriors- to no good end. "
Are you fucking high? Definitely not even close to the best you can get.
Like the cocaine addled Biden administration?
It’s not appropriate to have people doing drugs when they’re in a rehab facility. We could argue that the state shouldn’t be licensing rehab facilities in the first place, but since they do, this seems appropriate.
If you were shopping for a rehab facility that wasn’t licensed by the state for a family member, and you showed up and people were smoking weed on the front porch, I hope you wouldn’t think it was a good place to send them.
"as if it is desirable to have a bunch of people exchanging one addictive drug for another" -- marijuana is not addictive.
Florida Man can still get high on fentanyl, right?
weed shouldn't be scheduled, but as things stand the policy makes sense.
Is this to protect the methadone lobby?
No weed - but have some buprenorphine.
A Republican telling you what you can do with your body? Oh cmon now, there's no way that is possible..
They are telling you what you can’t do.
Weren’t you the guy saying if it wasn’t for government, people would still be using leaded gas and other dangerous things?
Lying Jeffy isn’t very consistent.
Yes, and that was even today.
Goes to the point that left and right both want to tell you what you can and can't do with your body, they just have different ideas of what should be allowed.
You’d have to be Left Libertarian stupid to think allowing “medical marijuana” in a rehab is a good idea.

Oranges man makes it both harder and easier for people to use medical pot. Some believed the Desantis hit pieces have stopped here at Reason.

It's weird to obsess about drugs as much as Reason and some libertarians do.
Should be more important things in life, but let's spend all our energy on junkies...
Umm... people can talk about, think about, and debate multiple issues. Apparently you only read the ones that talk about drugs so you (erroneously) assume that is all that is discussed. The drug prohibition is emblematic of the excesses of government so it is a useful topic to discuss - that does not minimize the other topics . Ejusdem Generis seems to apply here.
Florida’s decision to ban medical marijuana in all state-licensed rehabs and sober living houses has raised concerns and sparked debate. Supporters argue that the ban ensures a controlled environment for addiction recovery, preventing potential abuse or interference with treatment programs. However, critics believe that patients should have access to all available treatment options, including medical marijuana, as it may provide relief for certain conditions. The ban highlights the ongoing tension between ensuring effective addiction recovery and providing patients with alternative medical treatments. Further discussions and research are needed to address this complex issue.. https://checkmepcobill.pk/

It is misleading to just mention Florida. Of course we know that Reason is working for the Liberal Socialists under the cover of Libertarianism. The places that Florida is banning medical marijuana from all have one thing in common, they receive Medicare and Medicaid money from the Federal Government. I can very easily see the Biden Administration cut Federal funds from Florida over this to get at DeSantis.
"Of course we know that Reason is working for the Liberal Socialists under the cover of Libertarianism"
...and we know that your tinfoil hat is screwed on too tight.
No treatment centers or rehab centers will allow marijuana. This isn't controversial, and it isn't about Florida and DeSantis. Another reason hit piece that fell flat.
Do rehab centers allow alcohol? I would not expect marijuana policy to be more permissive than alcohol policy.
OTOH, I'm pretty sure that doctors haven't prescribed alcohol in a century, but they do prescribe marijuana, and sometimes it seems to be the best treatment. There are many prescription drugs that are rather incompatible with drug rehab; these conflicts should be worked out between the patient's doctor and the rehab staff, not by fiat from the state capital.
Actually, alcohol IS prescribed, it's the standard treatment, together with dialysis, for methanol poisoning. Alcohol monopolizes the liver enzyme that would otherwise convert the methanol into a much more dangerous toxin, keeping it from killing you while the dialysis clears it from your system.
Of course, it's administered via IV, not shot glass...
By passing laws like this, DeSantis has become LITERALLY HITLER!!!!
