Brickbat: Parking Purists

One Saturday each month, the Fuente de Vida Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania, opens up its food pantry to those in need. But on one recent Saturday, city parking enforcement officers showed up and began ticketing the cars of those parked to go pick up their food. "They go, 'We are the law. You have to respect the law.' And I mean, this is not the way to work with a community," said Pastor Alejandro Escamilla of the enforcement officers. After numerous public complaints, the city promised to waive the fees for the tickets and to reform the parking enforcement agency.

'We are the law. You have to respect the law.'
City Code 1.250.231 I believe. Disrespecting an officer of the law is a misdemeanor subject to a $250 fine and/or 30 days in jail. Under the same sub-section, disrespecting a city official is a felony calling for a 20 year minimum sentence, life imprisonment + 20 years a possibility.
There is a well known exception to the first ammendment for disrespect towards government officials...
Respect is an earned value.
They go, 'We are the law. You have to respect the law.' And I mean, this is not the way to work with a community...
With? For? The community works for them, and deadbeats have to pay up just like everyone else.

Is the church run food pantry on church property?
Don't they have a parking lot?
re: Don't they have a parking lot?
According to google maps, no they do not. This is a city church. My guess is that some parishioners use street-parking but most use the lots of local businesses that are mostly closed on Sunday mornings during services but not necessarily closed when the food pantry is open.
My guess is some parishioners walk when they know they need to be there at 9:00 and Mass lasts an hour, but when they figure they're just popping in/out for food, parking in the fire lane with your blinkers on is OK.
The fooler is the lot just north of them, across a narrow street. Reading the sign using Street View, though, I see it's for another church.
Only in America do the poor, picking up charity food, have to worry about parking tickets!
You are correct. In any other country, someone that poor wouldn't have a car.
You defending the parking cops?
There is the possibility that both the parking police and the people driving their cars to pick up food are both assholes. That not having food doesn't automatically make you virtuous any more than a badge does.
A few years ago they moved the offices of the Department of Public Welfare to a new building. Literally overnight parking meters appeared on the streets around the building.
And so a few more people have learned that the fix for a bad law is not to repeal the law but instead to exempt themselves from enforcement.
I've never once had a good experience with a parking Nazi. I don't see any reason why someone illegally parking to pick up food should have a different experience. Why should they get off?
But on one recent Saturday, city parking enforcement officers showed up and began ticketing the cars of those parked to go pick up their food.
If these poor people bought EVs, this wouldn't have happened.
Self-driving EVs would just be able to cruise around while the food was being picked up, eliminating the need for parking. - Reason
I did a little Googling and saw there's a parking lot across the street. Unfortunately it's for Grace Church, a block away. Seems to be the church district, there's a bunch of them around there.

So... what's unjust about giving a parking ticket to someone who is illegally parking?
Neither this article nor the link describe exactly what was illegal about their parking. Some parking laws are sensible, such as laws against blocking fire lanes or obstructing traffic. Others are less sensible, aimed more at giving cops an excuse to hand out fines than at actually providing public safety. Given the cops' "Respect mah authoritah!" attitude, I'd wouldn't be a bit surprised if these fell into the second category. OVerzealous enforcement of abusive laws falls pretty squarely into the category of legal, but unjust. It's also a big reason why people don't respect "the law".
Respect is earned. Fear is drummed into the riff-raff with nightsticks and live ammo. The Kleptocracy and its minions use a lot of equivocation and deadly force in efforts to make both words mean the same thing.
