Texas Sheriff Opens Criminal Investigation Into Migrants 'Lured Under False Pretenses' to Martha's Vineyard

More fallout from migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard. A Texas sheriff says he's investigating whether any laws were broken as part of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' (R) scheme to ship 48 Venezuelan migrants off to Martha's Vineyard last week.

The migrants were recruited from a shelter in San Antonio, Texas, which is in Bexar County, and then flown to Florida, before ultimately landing in Massachusetts. They were reportedly told that they were going to Boston and that they could get expedited work papers there.

Instead, DeSantis sent them to the small island of Martha's Vineyard and did not inform officials there that they were coming.

Now, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office "has opened an investigation into the migrants that were lured from the Migrant Resource Center, located in Bexar County, TX, and flown to Florida, where they were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha's Vineyard," the office announced Monday. "Additionally, we are working with private attorneys who are representing the victims, as well as advocacy organizations regarding this incident. We are also preparing to work with any federal agencies that have concurrent jurisdiction, should the need arise."

At a Monday press conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the "48 migrants were lured under false pretenses" and that they were "exploited and hoodwinked" for "nothing more than political posturing."

"They were promised work, they were promised a solution to several of their problems," said Salazar. "They were taken to Martha's Vineyard, from what we can gather, for little more than a photo op, video op, and then they were unceremoniously stranded in Martha's Vineyard."

Salazar said they're "very early in the investigation," but "I believe there is some criminal activity involved here."

The migrant move also has DeSantis facing questions from Florida lawmakers, who question whether he had the legal authority to fly people to Martha's Vineyard. DeSantis said he paid for the flights with money earmarked by the state legislature to "facilitate the transport of unauthorized aliens from this state consistent with federal law."

But "state Democrats and others are questioning whether the flights were legal since they originated in Texas and not Florida," reports Politico. "The law also specified that the flights should be used to transport 'unauthorized aliens'—but lawyers speaking on behalf of the migrants say many who were flown to Martha's Vineyard are seeking asylum, which puts them in a different category legally."

In Martha's Vineyard, a local church took the migrants in overnight, after which Massachusetts' emergency management agency sent them to be housed at a military base in Cape Cod.

"All the immigrant families who would like to leave are being given the option to go to an equipped facility on Cape Cod where they will be met with wrap around services including health care, mental health, & crisis counseling services, immigration attorneys, & case management for housing & for providing educational opportunities for the children," Massachusetts state Rep. Dylan Fernandes (D–Martha's Vineyard) tweeted last Friday.

Conservatives have inexplicably been making a big deal of the fact that authorities moved the migrants from Martha's Vineyard to elsewhere in Massachusetts, as if this proves that nobody wants them or that allegedly liberal districts are full of hypocrites.

But Martha's Vineyard is an isolated and relatively small community with little in the way of services, shelters, interpreters, mass transit, or employment opportunities. It's far removed from immigration offices or courts where asylum seekers will need to make appointments.

It's not cruel or hypocritical for Massachusetts leaders to realize the folks flown there would be better off elsewhere in the state—it's practical and kind. Cruel would be forcing them to stay in a place not well-equipped to help them just because a Republican governor decided to ship them there.

There's also no indication that the migrants sent to Martha's Vineyard wanted to stay there. They didn't pick the island as their destination and are likely more than happy to go places where meeting immigration requirements and finding work will be easier. None of which says anything about the willingness of Massachusetts or Martha's Vineyard to accept migrants and help them out.

FOLLOWUP

The Pentagon is investigating pro-American propaganda on social media, amid White House concerns. Reason covered a new report about these accounts—and their lack of resonance—earlier this month. Now, "the Pentagon has ordered a sweeping audit of how it conducts clandestine information warfare after major social media companies identified and took offline fake accounts suspected of being run by the U.S. military in violation of the platforms' rules," The Washington Post reports. "The U.S. government's use of ersatz social media accounts, though authorized by law and policy, has stirred controversy inside the Biden administration, with the White House pressing the Pentagon to clarify and justify its policies."

President Joe Biden inadvertently declares his student loan forgiveness program illegal. The president said over the weekend that the pandemic is now over—the same pandemic that's being used to justify canceling student loan debt. "When Biden announced his debt cancellation plan last month, administration lawyers cited the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students, or HEROES Act, of 2003, a post 9/11 law that 'permits the Secretary of Education to waive or modify Federal student financial assistance program requirements to help students and their families or academic institutions affected by a war, other military operation, or national emergency,'" notes Reason's Peter Suderman:

The law was clearly intended as a vehicle to give the president the power to forgive student loan debt for individuals directly involved in fighting the war on terror. But in Biden's revisionist citation, it became an all-purpose tool for mass debt forgiveness via executive action, premised on the argument that the COVID-19 pandemic was an ongoing national emergency.

The pandemic, in this formulation, gave Biden extraordinary powers—powers that under normal circumstances the president would not have.

It was an inherently dubious justification, given the novel and expansive reading of the HEROES Act. But Biden completely undercut it on a 60 Minutes interview this weekend when he declared, flatly, that "the pandemic is over."

Why would a Texas sheriff investigate activity that happened solely outside of Texas? The difference is that the deception and transport originated within Texas. The Texas sheriff has no reason to be concerned with Martha's Vineyard.

        1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

They trafficked these poor people across state lines!

Don't you see? They were so happy in their home in Texas, then were "lured" and shipped to some hellscape.

Perhaps. Guess the investigation will reveal more.

"Lured" is a fair choice of words if fraudulent promises were made, as is suspected.

              "False Pretenses"
Any false pretenses were almost certainly entirely on the part of Martha's Vineyard. I guarantee that what they were told is that the city was so accepting of illegal immigrants that they publicly declared themselves a safe haven for such. Which they did. That they were lying sacks of shit is largely irrelevant.

Geez, just put up the tent he used for his birthday party.

You remember. The one during covid where we weren't allowed to go anywhere without triple masks and keeping our toes on the painted markers 6 feet apart, so he reduced his guest list to like 600 people. Not counting the staff.

Pretty sure that tent would be a great temporary shelter for hundreds of transient "migrants" looking for a better life in their sanctuary city.

Also, you wouldn't be able to afford a yurt under the BART overpasses. My first job after college was as a stringer for a newspaper. $1.50 per published inch

                  1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

That's about what I got paid when I freelanced for an aviation magazine.

It just about covered my costs -- I was reviewing airplanes and on my own for rental/fuel -- but sure didn't turn much of a profit. Thankfully it was just a side hustle and a lot of fun.

I later worked for a magazine publisher as a copy editor, web developer, and writer and was underpaid for all three. And it wasn't fun. The most creative thing about the whole endeavor was the resumes the editors put on the masthead.

Journalists are snakes. I lasted 8 months then jumped to pure tech.

                    1. This Is The Zodiac Speaking   3 years ago

Funny, that was about my timeline too. I bailed journalism when my editor cut the word 'circumspect' from an article which effectively reduced my article inch count (heh..). I took a job at GE Nuclear in their IT department.

        2. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

They might give a shit, they might not. But their experience in Martha's Vineyard doesn't prove much one way or another.

They were fed free pizza, put up for the night, and transported to where services are available. So, for the one day they treated the people pretty well.

If DeSantis was looking to embarrass them, he failed. He also screwed up by accidentally picking a bunch of Venezuelan asylum seekers.

          1. JesseAz   3 years ago

LOL, mike is still going with the "pizza and a cot for 24 hours makes liberals so much better than the GOP" angle.

          2. Unable2Reason   3 years ago

What services did they need? Bed & breakfast. Then all's they need is lunch & dinner. Is that what we're calling "service" now?

I guess that is supposed to be clever, but it comes across incoherent:

The latent hypocrisy is there for all to see. When given an opportunity to show their compassion, the residents of Martha's Vineyard deported the illegal aliens to a military base where they are held under guard.

Reason left out confirmed information that goes against the narrative of the ENB article pushing the leftist narratives instead you fucking idiot.

            1. InsaneTrollLogic   3 years ago

Why would she even bother to put them in? It obviously bothers ENB far more than DeSantis sent 50 of them to Martha's Vineyard, a lily-white, progressive, uber-rich enclave, than it does that they were shipped out of there by these same folks who claim to be a sanctuary for refugees. It also bothers her more about MV getting them than Chicago and it's progressive mayor dumping the same amount (50) on the suburb of Burr Ridge after Chicago declaring itself a sanctuary city. Is it because one is Democrat and one is Republican? More than likely, given ENB's political proclivities. Twitter is up in arms over the MV stuff, but can't even be bothered to lift a finger regarding the utter hypocrisy shown by MV and Chicago.

Notice sarc living in lily white main has taken the same defense. At this point it can be assumed they don't want the diety brown people near where they live. Best to leave them in bankrupt border towns and underpass without work. That is true compassion.

Interesting slightly off topic: Went to Keweenaw peninsula, MI, earlier this summer and started reading about copper mining up there. Turns out there’s a whole area of study about the trans-Atlantic copper trade thousands of years ago (most likely the Minoans).

Got me down a rabbit hole and ended up hearing about theories of Africans already being in the Americas well before Columbus. Haven’t read as much actual research, but look at the head status of the Olmecs. Do they look like Native Americans or Africans?

You did not come to a conclusion. Coming to a conclusion requires some level of rational thought that you lack the capacity for.

I know it eludes you, but "blah blah blah..." is not emblematic of the rational though involved in coming to a conclusion.

        .
Florida’s Voice reported Monday that they obtained one of the brochures that the illegal immigrants were given prior to heading to Martha’s Vineyard. The publication said that they confirmed the information with the governor’s office.

Why should they pony up any of their own money? You don't get rich and stay rich by actually giving money to "the poors." You do it by virtue signaling on Twitter about how much you "care" and then insisting that other people pay. Either through a GoFundMe, or more traditionally, forced taxpayer funded charity.

If they truly are the 1%, then it is widely acknowledged among libertarians (true libertarians) that extremely rich people pay a much higher percentage of income tax than poorer people. It's totally not about actual transwhatevers though.

Don't forget, we're talking teenagers. They'll do anything for attention and adopt whatever temporary identity. They all want a group to belong to. Ever see goth kids? Witches? Punks? Stoners who don't really smoke? Sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads.

You can't give kids the ability to demand you call them something on a whim. They will weaponize it, so they can get all pissy when you don't do it, because that's what kids do. If they have to file some sort of paperwork that says they're genuinely transitioning, you remove the whole walk into the ladies room and just say "I identify as..." to get out of trouble for whipping our dick out around the girls.

Genuine trans are a fraction of a percent. Massive accommodations for this at a school level is ridiculous. Reasonable accommodation for the one or two, statistically, in a typical high school should be a simple, low effort issue.

Wrote this back in 2017 when N.C.'s bathroom law was being debated...

Under, e.g., Obama's Title IX "guidance" (go read it) "that a man who (with no physician's diagnosis or any physical operation) identifies as a woman is entitled to the same rights under Title IX." This is the position of the NCAA, too, apparently.

So it's worse than that. A man doesn't have to actually identify as a woman. He can merely claim that he does, cannot be questioned on his claim, and can change his mind at any time. Because, "gender fluid". A truck-sized loophole for pedophiles and miscellaneous perverts. Get arrested for setting up shop in the ladies room? Just claim "I identify as a woman."

Apart from real criminals, this is a fiasco waiting to happen when hormone-plagued adolescent boys, being adolescent boys with raging hormones, realize--and sooner rather than later they will realize--that they can pop into the girls locker room at will. Just lie and use the "I'm gender fluid and feel like a girl right now." excuse.

The 0.3% of people who are actually transgendered are not the real target of this law. If someone has had hormone therapy and surgery to change their outer sex appearance, they will not even be noticed.

The smaller fraction of gender-changing women who want to use a men's bathroom are also not really the issue. Women (trans or not) in a men's room pose no significant threat to the men there regarding sexual assault. There are not a lot of "upskirt" photos taken in men's rooms.

The smaller fraction of gender-changing men who have not yet fully transitioned to women who want to use a women's bathroom are certainly being--unfairly, perhaps--told by this law to go along with society and use the men's room instead, in an effort to deny a safe haven to would-be rapists and other deviants.

If the bathrooms and locker rooms are such a problem for transgendered folks, maybe the solution is to have all bathrooms and locker rooms be unisex from kindergarden on up and in all public places. REAL nondiscrimination in the bathroom.

Just let the football team and cheerleaders use the same locker room. Nothing bad could possibly happen there right?

And since urinals would discriminate based on external plumbing, everyone has to use the same toilets. We'll probably have to demand that those who happen to have external plumbing sit down to use them, right? Lest they dribble on the seat that they fail to put up.

Okay, that last bit was just trying to lighten the mood!

"At a Monday press conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the "48 migrants were lured under false pretenses" and that they were "exploited and hoodwinked" for "nothing more than political posturing."

"Nothing more than political posturing" is exactly what Sheriff Salazar is doing. But hey, he's on the correct team.

Officers responded to a suicide call at around 4:45 p.m Sunday. When officers approached the home, a neighbor was letting her American Bulldog out, and the dog charged at the officers. Officers attempted to retreat, officials said. One officer fired a shot at the dog but missed and hit their partner in the leg. The officer was transported to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Speaking of 'Lower environmental values' - I saw this thread over the weekend that explains how, using bureaucratic loopholes in their environmental regulations, the EU has managed to declare burning wood for power generation and heat to be a 'carbon neutral' fuel.

      https://twitter.com/DoombergT/status/1571063488860286977

So, they cut down (CO2 capturing) old growth forests in the SE United States, put the logs on diesel trucks and take it to a wood pellet processing plant, when more energy and fossil fuels are consumed to turn these trees into wood pellets.

Then they are shipped to a port (diesel trucks again) and loaded onto (diesel) boats for Europe. Once they arrive, they are then burned for in homes for heat and at plants for power generation. Wood pellets have less energy density and emit more CO2 than coal or natural gas. This is considered 'carbon neutral' for some reason.

      1. Eeyore   3 years ago

Literally killing the co2 sequestration system. Idiots.

Holy. Shit. "Carbon neutral" are just words they like to throw around. They mean whatever they want them to mean at any given time. In fact, it's probably only a matter of time until they decide that coal is also "carbon neutral."

      5. Square = Circle   3 years ago

Wood pellets have less energy density and emit more CO2 than coal or natural gas. This is considered 'carbon neutral' for some reason.

I've been trying to explain this to people for decades now.

No matter what you think about climate science, this is what happens when you call on the government to solve the 'problem' of CO2 in the atmosphere.

          Nuh uh. - Tony

      6. Zeb   3 years ago

Well, when you live in a place where there are reasonably well managed forests, burning wood is fairly neutral as trees are re-growing (and I believe that young forests absorb more CO2 than mature, old growth). So that's the idea behind biomass fuels being carbon neutral.
If they are really doing what you say, yeah, that's nonsense. Though I think wood pellets are mostly made from waste wood (chips, slash, sawdust, etc.). At least the ones made in the factory near where I live are.

        1. R Mac   3 years ago

“Though I think wood pellets are mostly made from waste wood (chips, slash, sawdust, etc.). At least the ones made in the factory near where I live are.”

What old growth forests in the SE United States?

The SE United State grow lots of trees, but so much of it is farmed and harvested white pine, etc. for paper, lumber and such. There's no old growth forests there.

New Soros and Democrat-backed company emerges to censor “disinformation” online

"A new public benefit corporation backed by billionaires Reid Hoffman, George Soros, and others is launching Tuesday to fund new media companies and efforts that tackle disinformation.
Good Information Inc. aims to fund and scale businesses that cut through echo chambers with fact-based information. As part of its mission, it plans to invest in local news companies.

The group will be led by Tara McGowan, a former Democratic strategist who previously ran a progressive non-profit called ACRONYM which invested in for-profit companies that built media and technology solutions for progressive causes. It ran one of the largest digital campaigns to defeat President Trump in the 2020 election, totaling $100 million.
One of the companies it invested in, called Shadow, made headlines last year for contributing to the delayed reporting of the Iowa caucus results.

ENB is actually pushing the sheriff who said on an interview he doesn't know which crime was committed but he will investigate a person, ie DeSantis. Truly a libertarian take to investigate a man and not a crime.

DeSantis and Abbot have both provided the materials and process they utilized. It was fully open and transparent. They were told where they were going. The materials used exact information from the destination websites on what they would be provided. The immigrants were not lied to but given material hosted by the states they were sent to.

But this sherif just feeeeeeels there must be a crime. So he will investigate a citizen without knowing which one. And it is supported by the writers here.

    Unbelievable.

But Martha's Vineyard is an isolated and relatively small community with little in the way of services, shelters, interpreters, mass transit, or employment opportunities. It's far removed from immigration offices or courts where asylum seekers will need to make appointments.

It doesn't matter if Martha's Vineyard didn't have the services. They declared themselves a sanctuary district.

If you declare yourself a sanctuary district, it might behoove the political leaders of such districts to announce to the country how many migrants they can handle, what services they're prepared to deliver etc. That way when migrants are sent to your district, you won't be overwhelmed.

Are the false pretenses here the fact that Martha's Vineyard claimed it was "welcoming to poor brown people"?

One of the more interesting things about Christianity is how it attracts so many people who claim to hate it to become theologians and study it. Westerners who study Islam or Hinduism, or other non Western religion, while usually not believers, always in my experience have a profound respect and fascination with whatever religion they choose to study. No so with Christianity. In fact it is the opposite, most people who get theology degrees and become professors instead of ministers seem to actively loath Christianity. Why would you spend your life studying something you hate?

      1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

Eh, Christianity has a long history of its opponents becoming converts. Paul, for instance.
I don't think it's unique that Christianity in the West has an element of theologians opposed to it. I remember reading about examples of this with Buddhism in Japan. I think it's just Buddhism and Islam are still foreign and therefore don't have the same place in the culture as a dominant tradition.

“He’s gone so far as to attack my client and myself personally, claiming that we’re money hungry,” Hoelscher said. “We believed based on all of our interactions with Salazar and the Sheriff’s Office, that they’re intentionally withholding an outcome in this investigation to punish this family.”

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke about his support for the bill on the Senate floor yesterday, and below is a summary of its positive impact on Texas.

The FY 2022 Omnibus Appropriations Bill:

Equips boots on the ground on the southern border by providing $22 billion for interior enforcement and border security efforts, including equipment upgrades and tactical infrastructure along the southern border.
Supports border communities in Texas that absorb the costs from the surge of illegal immigration by directing $130 million to the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to compensate these communities.
Cracks down on illegal drug trafficking with $296 million directed to federal-state-local partnerships, including Task Forces in Texas.
Strengthens national security with a six percent increase in defense spending, including a 2.7 percent pay raise for our troops as well a $436 million investment to upgrade and improve military facilities in Texas
Stands up to Russian aggression by supporting Ukraine with $13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine for critical military equipment, weapons, and humanitarian assistance.
Supports rural Texas communities and Texas’ robust agriculture industry with $100 billion for farm and food safety net programs authorized by the Farm Bill.
Invests in critical water infrastructure projects with $8 billion included for flood mitigation and ecosystem restoration in Texas.
Ensures critical assistance programs and funding for victims of domestic abuse are provided for through the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which Sen. Cornyn has been leading on in the Senate.
Provides $1.7 billion for Community Health Centers to ensure low-income Texans have access to health care.
Bolsters programs for low-income Texas high school students preparing for college and career readiness with $1.5 billion for the TRIO and GEAR UP Programs."

Also mentioned that 2000 British sailors died ending slavery that the African tribes tried to continue and those sailors likely deserve reparations from those tribes as well.

Would be epic if some anti-woke director made a prequel to The Woman King (based on a true story) laying out how the Dahomey kingdom was financially built and maintained around going to war to capture and sell slaves. Bonus Points for race-swapping the Dahomey and getting woke hollywood to clap like seals for what is essentially Africans killing, capturing, and enslaving each other.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

Some dingbat movie critic made the claim that the female guards in Black Panther were based on the the Dahomey. I don't know if that's true, but it would be fucking hilarious if it were.

The irony is lost: "to hold the work of art to that standard is unfair."

Progressives have been demanding that history be held to *their* present-day standards, tearing down statues, renaming buildings, etc. But bring up the fact that a movie released this year does not accurately portray slave-traders as slave-traders is something we're supposed to just overlook.

Also, I noticed that the cast of The Woman King was not at all diverse, and that while Viola Davis is an outstanding actress, I thought it would have been a braver casting decision to cast Meryl Streep instead.

              https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/9/19/2123683/-To-everyone-calling-for-a-boycott-of-The-Woman-King-No?detail=emaildkre&pm_source=DKRE&pm_medium=email

What the film did not do is accurately depict the extent to which Dahomey participated in the slave trade, opting instead to portray African female warriors as fierce and perseverant.

My personal feelings about the film aside, it was never intended to be the sole primary source of information about the kingdom of Dahomey, and to hold the work of art to that standard is unfair.

First, I would like the Texas sheriffs to recognize that Ron DeSantis does not have a foreign border and so does not have access to asylum seekers in the same way that Greg Abbott has access. This necessitates the need to recruit people for his political stunt. People recruit other people for political stunts all the time.

A bigger question for the people of Florida was why spend the expense to fly people all the way to Martha Vineyard, MA. Florida has plenty of places with rich people. Gov DeSantis might have sent those asylum seekers to Palm Beach, Naples, Sanibel, or Captiva. To name few spots. My impression of most cities in Florida is that you could not throw an orange without hitting the wall of some gated community. He could have sent the same message at a considerable cheaper price.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants has been facilitated by a tool called an “immigration hold.” Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers can issue so-called ICE detainers when a state or local law enforcement agency is poised to release an undocumented immigrant from custody. If an agency agrees, it may hold the individual in custody for up to two days so ICE agents can transfer him or her to an immigration detention facility and initiate deportation proceedings.
On Monday, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court unanimously ruled that state court officers are not legally permitted to comply with ICE detainers. The logic of its decision extends to all commonwealth law enforcement officers—meaning that Massachusetts is now, effectively, a sanctuary state. While this is the first state Supreme Court to prohibit local law enforcement from honoring ICE detainers, it probably won’t be the last. On Tuesday, I spoke with Massachusetts American Civil Liberties Union legal director Matthew Segal about the significance and potential impact of the SJC’s ruling. 3. Joe Friday   3 years ago

Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state.

"In 2017, Massachusetts' top state court ruled that Massachusetts court officers do not have the authority to arrest someone suspected of being in the U.S. illegally if that person is not facing criminal charges, the state's highest court ruled Monday. That's effectively gave the state sanctuary status.

But for years, advocates have tried to get a bill that would codify sanctuary status in Massachusetts, and it hasn't passed, despite Democrats, who tend to support sanctuary status more than Republicans, controlling the Legislature.

The Safe Communities Act would prevent court and police officers from asking about immigration status unless required by law, require people in detention from being interviewed by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to be notified beforehand and more.

Gov. Charlie Baker has opposed a previous version of the bill, writing in 2017, "Our administration does not support making the Commonwealth a sanctuary state.""

Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, but even if it were, for the purposes of the MAGA creeps like DeSantis what is important about that in this argument is the supposed willingness of the people, or even the politicians of a state to take on immigrants. An edict from a court does not imply in anyway such a willingness.

Joe Asshole; full of shit. Nobody surprised.

    2. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

Or his own former town, Ponte Vedra Beach! I'm sure they would be just as welcoming at Martha's Vineyard.

Let's give shout out to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church who took in these people. I think the Church leaders and the faith community there are real Christians.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

Just a quick reminder that it was the Episcopelians who sponsored FALN while they were bombing buildings.

    2. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

      It was kind of them.

      1. damikesc   3 years ago

The bare minimum is kind, I guess.

    3. damikesc   3 years ago

"Let's give shout out to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church who took in these people."

...for less than 2 days before they were militarily removed from the island.

"I think the Church leaders and the faith community there are real Christians."

...for about 2 days. Then they send them on their way happily.

Masnick and Poophat having an aneurysm over the court decision is elegant proof that it was the right one to make. Masnick talks a good game about "decentralizing" the internet, but the reality is that he's a fucking jobber who will lay down for Big Tech when it really matters.

    1. I, Woodchipper   3 years ago

There should literally be no regulation of anything internet related whatsoever.

Given that there are thousands of pages of regulations in place, we have a fascist system of government/private control over all our lives when they touch the internet (which is basically everything now). Given that, a political battle over HOW to control it is not necessarily wrong to engage in, even though the primary principle should be "no government involvement whatsoever".

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

There should literally be no regulation of anything internet related whatsoever.

There shouldn't be, but that's not the reality. It's just a matter of time before the internet is classed as a common carrier, and for the very reason that the Tech Trust is so intimately tied to the federal government in the first place.

        1. I, Woodchipper   3 years ago

          agreed

  92. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

Whenever I see someone use the word "kind" these days, I know they're engaging in emotional manipulation.

  93. Moderation4ever   3 years ago

While that is true, I would say that Gov DeSantis spent a lot of money and did not really get the reaction he wanted. I feel certain he could have dropped those asylum seekers in downtown Naples for a cheaper price and I sure he would have gotten much more outrage from the locals.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

While that is true, I would say that Gov DeSantis spent a lot of money and did not really get the reaction he wanted.

Are you kidding? He got exactly the reaction he wanted. Look at all the coping and seething by the left after that happened.

      1. Joe Friday   3 years ago

Yeah, that's what we have governors for, to have pissing fights with the other party while getting nothing done. There is currently a home owners insurance crisis in Florida he's passed on, the water continues to deteriorate from red tide and pollution, Florida has among the worst per capita covid results, poorest paid teachers, non-existent health care for the poor, and too expensive housing costs. But hey, he's apparently pretty good at getting expensive airline tickets to send people people in Texas on pointless trips. Let's send his wife and kids on a surprise adventure to someplace with no place to stay and no way out.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   3 years ago

LOL, keep skreeeeeeing there, Joe. You just don't like it when the other team shoves your shit back in your mouth.

        2. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

Well, don’t forget how how he also started a war with Disney, cause what did they ever do for Florida!

          1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Yeah, noooobody would visit Florida if Disney wasn't there.

            1. Joe Friday   3 years ago

Orlando is Ocala without Disney and central Florida is north Florida. Nothing wrong with that except the billions of dollars and millions of jobs lost.

    2. I, Woodchipper   3 years ago

HAHAHAH he got EXACTLY the reaction he wanted.

Give me a real man like Biden or Cuomo.

    2. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

I've been thinking about this a bit, and I do think most of the negative reaction to this action is seemingly based around the idea that the border crisis is not actually a big deal.
This comes through in a lot of reporting, including from Reason, which basically takes a stance of "the border towns need to deal with this, it's their border."

It's a very frustrating thing, and I've said this for years. People don't grasp how big of an issue this is. Bleeding hearts love to report on the illegal immigrants themselves, and refuse to believe that there is any cost to things and it's purely a matter of cold hearted bastards.

It reminds me a lot of when SB1070 happened in Arizona, and I read all this reaction about how Arizona hates Mexicans. It tended to be from places that didn't have Mexican people, and was being directed at Arizona which is, like most border states, a place with a long and complicated history with Mexico. It really bothers me.
I always say I'm so open-border, and I am, but it really frustrates me how so much pro-immigration stuff states it as if there is no cost of difficulty to taking that stance.

      1. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

You are missing the disgust at a governor using people to pull a political stunt.

Hey, you know what would be refreshing: Republicans acting like mature adults.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

Right, like mature Democrats who use the DOJ and paid informants to fuck with people. Very cultured.

          1. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

So, Republican behavior is excused by Democratic behavior? It’s just a big race to the bottom?

            1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Explain how DeSatis stunt was "disgusting", because it seemed apt and on point to me.

...like declaring your state a sanctuary state for illegals than bitching when illegals are sent there?

    3. Mike Laursen   3 years ago

Perhaps because it was a stupid non-response.

      1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

It was a great response, on topic and relevant to the accusation. It's not a "stupid non-response" just because it made you super mad.

  95. John Rohan   3 years ago

Instead, DeSantis sent them to the small island of Martha's Vineyard and did not inform officials there that they were coming.

No one informs US officials when migrants are coming across the border. Isn't that illegal?

Conservatives have inexplicably been making a big deal of the fact that authorities moved the migrants from Martha's Vineyard to elsewhere in Massachusetts, as if this proves that nobody wants them or that allegedly liberal districts are full of hypocrites.

They claim they welcome migrants, then got rid of them within 44 hours. That's pretty hypocritical.

But Martha's Vineyard is an isolated and relatively small community with little in the way of services, shelters, interpreters, mass transit, or employment opportunities. It's far removed from immigration offices or courts where asylum seekers will need to make appointments.

Martha's Vineyard has a TON of services and employment opportunities. Hotels, landscaping, tourist services, etc. And there's no shortage of housing. Heck just the Obamas alone have a mansion on a 29 acre estate. They could have easily taken in these 50 migrants if they wanted to. But they don't want to.

"...But Martha's Vineyard is an isolated and relatively small community with little in the way of services, shelters, interpreters, mass transit, or employment opportunities. It's far removed from immigration offices or courts where asylum seekers will need to make appointments..."

If this were true, it simply highlights the hypocritical virtue-signaling of the left: "We're a sanctuary -city, but don't come here!"

Russian trolls apparently targeted Women's March organizers back in 2017.

So Linda Sarsour is a Russian troll in addition to being an uber-leftist anti-semitic Muslim?

  97. Joe Friday   3 years ago

"No one informs US officials when migrants are coming across the border. Isn't that illegal?"

Yeah, who are you going to arrest and for what? Our law allows for applying for political asylum, which is what these Venezuelans did.

"They claim they welcome migrants, then got rid of them within 44 hours. That's pretty hypocritical."

Yeah, where? Any proof for your statement?

"Martha's Vineyard has a TON of services and employment opportunities. Hotels, landscaping, tourist services, etc. And there's no shortage of housing. Heck just the Obamas alone have a mansion on a 29 acre estate. They could have easily taken in these 50 migrants if they wanted to. But they don't want to."

It is presently illegal for applicants for asylum to work. Some Americans say they should be able to and many of these said they want to.

Apparently the good liberals on MV ran out of battery powered leaf blowers and there weren't enough house cleaning jobs available as most of the tourists had already left.

It's not cruel or hypocritical for Massachusetts leaders to realize the folks flown there would be better off elsewhere in the state—it's practical and kind. Cruel would be forcing them to stay in a place not well-equipped to help them just because a Republican governor decided to ship them there."

"Court documents say at 2:35 Sunday morning, 41-year-old Shannon Brandt called 911 to report that he had hit a pedestrian because he was threatening him. Brandt told State Radio that the pedestrian was part of a Republican extremist group and that he was afraid they were 'coming to get him.' "

I'm sure the FBI is right on top of this extremist violence.

    1. damikesc   3 years ago

      Not Biden's fault.

...I am serious it is not, but it is odd how "go forth peacefully" is a call to violence but "those people are FASCISTS!" is not.

      1. Cronut   3 years ago

It's not Biden's fault. I'm not blaming him. But the double standard is striking.

  101. Otis R. Needleman   3 years ago

What a fucking joke. Plenty of REAL crime in Bexar County. Maybe the sheriff needs to stop playing political games and do his job.

  102. Uomo Del Ghiaccio   3 years ago

It's not cruel or hypocritical for border state leaders to realize the migrants crammed int shelters and living on the streets there would be better off elsewhere in the country such as in Massachusetts which is a declared sanctuary —it's practical and kind.

Cruel would be forcing them to stay in a place not well-equipped to help them just because liberal democrats in their isolated non-border states don't feel that there is a issue with the numbers of migrants and does not warrant any concern.

  103. kfs   3 years ago

MV, we are a sanctuary town in spirit if not in actual practice but that's close enough, am I right?

  104. NotForNoReason   3 years ago

They made the left and open border zealots look like utter two faced double talking FOOLS and now the system/elites are going to make them pay.

This is why we are pretty much at a point where peaceful or democratic anything is ever going to change the course. The entire system has been reconfigured into a means to subvert any attempts at democratic and popular will/control. It's pushing their vision or the (for now only) metaphorical wall.

  105. JohnZ   3 years ago (edited)

He can investigate all he wants but he has no authority outside his county. Besides he has troubles of his own regarding the murders of three young women in his county. I rather suspect this latest outburst from Salazar is an attempt to draw attention away from his poor performance as sheriff.

  106. MJBinAL   3 years ago

Isn't that a hoot? Liberals are just fine with no national borders but REALLY worked up over transporting people over state lines!

  107. mpercy   3 years ago

Yep. We don't send people to prison for questioning the government's narrative, what kind of barbarians would do that?

We only commit them involuntarily to mental institutions, where the institutional staff will work hard to help our comrades out of their obvious mental illness.
