Criticizing Lack of Grocery Stores in the South Bronx Means the Twitter Mob Will Try To Get You Fired
A recent college grad from the Midwest landed in the Bronx and was confused by bodega culture. This led to a social media mob, a digging up of old videos, and a firing.
"I've literally been to like five of those now, and I don't know what the fuck I'm about to do for dinner," said NYC newcomer Griffin Green in a TikTok video posted this past week, referring to the bodegas of the South Bronx. "Like, where are the Krogers and the Whole Foods at? I'm about to eat fuckin' cereal and ramen for dinner," Green continued.
This, and other TikTok videos in the style of day-in-the-life vlogs (that have since been roasted and riffed on), seem to have gotten him fired from software company Outreach, which had hired him as an entry-level sales development representative. "I'm in the Bronx for a few weeks so I'm like the only white dude in this whole gym, so I got this NAACP shirt so these people vibe with me more," said Green in one video. He talked about how many gay people there are in NYC (during Pride celebrations) in another, innocuously displaying dude-from-Michigan-lands-in-the-big-city culture shock. He briefly shows his employment offer letter, marked as confidential, in another TikTok, though it's very hard to make out details within it; in an email to Reason, the company claims this was the reason they fired him but awkwardly follows that statement with a seemingly unrelated one about diversity, equity, and inclusion. "It is against company policy for employees to leak private and confidential information, and grounds for termination," wrote Andrew Schmitt, vice president of communications. "We remain committed to building our culture that finds strength in our diversity, equity and inclusion—and a company where all can succeed."
If they were firing Green for the offer letter image alone, it doesn't make sense why the company's Twitter account made news of his firing public via a tweeted response to people who were angry about the bodega video or why they responded to the mob at all. When I spoke with Green, he said HR had called him on his second day of work, notifying him that he'd be let go for both the heat that they'd gotten from the videos and the sharing of the confidential offer letter. Green notes that the offer letter had been on TikTok for three weeks prior but only just now caught their attention.
Had Green framed his bodega TikTok as an exploration of the struggles with food deserts in the South Bronx, he'd probably still have a job, having never faced the mob's ire. He may have even been lauded instead of derided as a racist "Chad" from the Midwest. But a few low-follower Twitter accounts found Green's TikTok videos, quote-tweeted them, and with comments like "I would reevaluate his employment if I were you," to which Outreach responded indicating that they'd terminated him.
"People can be painted as these mean awful people when really they're just trying to explore new things," says Green. "I was exploring New York for the first time…I didn't know that people do grocery shopping at these corner stores."
"It was more of an intent to almost like make fun of myself for being a new person in the city," he adds.
With other cancel culture incidents, companies fearing public backlash have moved quickly to rid themselves of employees who might tarnish their reputations. This case is no exception: The company posted at 8:25 p.m. on Tuesday that the video had been brought to its attention. By a little after noon the next day, it said it had fired Green. Green, who just signed a 12-month lease and is worried about finances, says he asked HR for an opportunity to explain himself, but they denied his request; they will also withhold the $2,500 relocation bonus that would've come with his first paycheck.
Companies are within their rights to hire and fire whomever they want, and Green was a newly hired recent college grad who'd hardly had time to demonstrate any value to the company. But this kind of corporate wokeness should concern us all. If your out-of-work conduct is on limits to this extent, what types of offenses or pronouncements are fireable? Must workers engage in a constant guessing game? Are software companies in the business of moral adjudication? What types of moral indicators are they looking for, per whose standards?
But companies fear being the mob's target of the week more than they fear hastily punishing innocent people. Consider the case of Emma Sarley, who in fall 2021 was fired from her job at tech company Bevy after allegedly telling a black couple "stay in your hood" after an altercation in a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, dog park. The black couple included Frederick Joseph, a noted internet fame-seeker and yarn-spinning provocateur who had allegedly indicated earlier in the altercation that he'd lived in a posh neighborhood north of Williamsburg, in Queens, which would have made Sarley's comments make more sense. (Note that she was not accused of saying "the hood," but rather "your hood," which seems relevant when attempting to discern racist intent.)
Sarley's case took Bevy CEO Derek Andersen less than 48 hours to rule on. She was quickly fired, just as Green was quickly fired from Outreach. Perhaps this indicates appropriate risk calculation from management. Or perhaps it indicates something more insidious: that our poorly worded jokes or clumsy invectives in moments of frustration can be found by bad actors on the internet, trotted out for all to mock, and assumed to be representative of our character. No mercy, no weighing of our own account of what happened, and certainly no job at the end of the public cross-examination.
"All I ask is for a chance to explain myself," Green wrote in his email to HR asking for a second chance. "This is my dream job and I don't want it to get taken away because of a stupid tik tok video."

There are two ways he can frame his "fish out of water" experience: he can present it an expedition into strange, hostile territory and how he's managing to survive, or he can present it as an eye-opening exposure into a different (but equally effective) way of doing basic things like shopping for food.
The NAACP comment just comes across like "here's now not to get shivved as a the only white guy in a gym full of latinos", when he _could_ have said something like "It was quite sobering to be the only one of my racial identity, and it really made me think about what things must by like for minorities in countless, everyday scenarios". Same goes for his comments about bodegas. He could frame it as "How is a _normal_ person supposed to survive, here?" or he could frame it as "Wow, they've totally worked out a different way of shopping, here, than I'm used to, and it's going to be quite a fun adventure acclimating to the routines here".
One frames this alternate culture as different and _wrong_, while the other frames it as different but equally effective and valid. The first perpetuates stereotypes which keep minorities marginalized, so, the "woke mob", recognizing the small, but non-zero, amount of harm such commentary does, is less and less likely to just give it a pass.

The lawyers on Volokh can chime in, but I think Green has a case to sue under promissory estoppel, the legal principle that a party may recover damages on the basis of a reasonable promise, and the party attempting to recover detrimentally relied on the promise. It often comes up when companies pull job offers right after a person has quit their old jobs and relocated.
They will use that he revealed a confidential document to argue breach of contract. Ironically, even though they stamped it CONFIDENTIAL, discussing your wages and working conditions is protected without exception by the NLRB. He probably will end up with at least 90 days of wages to find new work in addition to the amount promised for relocation.

Sure it will. The employer just needs to admit that they fired him for being a racist, and the court or agency will fall all over itself to uphold the action, so as to demonstrate that *it's* not racist.
(To get serious for a moment: the argument based on discussing wages and working conditions would work if he had only disclosed his letter to his fellow employees. That could reasonably be characterized as necessary first step toward collective action to seek improvement of those wages and conditions. Broadcasting it to the world, though, is a sure loser.)
That argument may get him his relocation costs and sign on bonus but everything else will depend on his contract and the employment laws of NY. The pic of the document posted in the article reads like a terrible contract to begin with anyway- so I doubt any attorneys will bother taking this on. Does not seem like there is any financial interest in doing so and unfortunately this kid doesn’t seem bright enough to represent his own interests.

In New York, relatively few people have cars and even if you do parking is difficult so getting groceries from somewhere in short walking distance is very important to a lot of people.
Obviously you're not going to have large supermarkets every couple blocks so in a lot of areas you have a large number of much smaller stores.
It's a large city and the density and other details vary so they do of course have supermarkets of varying sizes from very small, but not a corner store to very large and only reasonably accessible by car. But the small corner stores AKA bodegas are a popular solution for much of the city.

You might be among the few who are situated to do one-stop grocery shopping in the city, but for most it'll be visiting a succession of specialty stores within walking distance. You might go to one for fish, another for produce, yet another for packaged goods, etc. And often do better that way on quality and especially on price than you would've at a hypermarket out in the sticks.

"Going to the grocery story" is just a normal aspect of life here, and it's incomprehensible to me that people would live by choice, in an economically non-distressed area, in such a way that they couldn't get to one.

That he was so dumb on the most public forum of Tiktok to both post his employment contract and subjects that alienate a great many of the public makes him look kind of unsuitable for the job.

And the appropriate consequence is getting fired, having your relocation expresses reneged, and publicly dragged by your employer?
The response seems completely out of proportion given the fact that his stupid videos didn't harm anyone and generally indicated a goofy attempt to deal with the massive culture shock he was experiencing. If the consequence was being sent to a 3 hour class on how to not be cringe, he would have a job and know how to better navigate the city (or at least TikTok), the company would have access to a perspective that it currently lacks but represents 90% of the population, and Reason wouldn't have bothered to write an article.
The lesson here is don't put your real name on the internet. Keep IRL and online separate. I don't really know how that got forgotten over the years. When I was growing up that's all I was ever told by my parents. That was before Facebook though. Now I have to warn them about sharing too much.

Sure, there’s lots of cool stuff to do there, or used to be, but living there isn’t going to make you any more interesting or a better person. I've family members who live in the borough of Manhattan. One sister keeps a car, so if she's not having stuff delivered, she can drive into Queens and shop at supermarkets not unlike what one would find in Nassau and Suffolk counties. There is a Gristedes in walking distance of her apartment

For a while I was using a twitter account with my real name and photo. It was a guilty pleasure, where I would engage with (and criticize) people who made dumb political arguments.
When I got my first real job out of school, I locked that stuff down immediately. Took my name off of it, made it private, etc. Not because my company had a policy against social media, but because any social media is a liability for your job. It can do no good, and can do a ton of bad.
People should not be complaining that this dude should not have been fired over this. People should be teaching kids that you need to distance yourself from your media accounts once you start working for big companies. "Cancel culture" (i.e. repercussions for saying potentially anything in the public sphere) is NEVER going to die. People need to learn how to adapt, or continue losing their jobs for being careless.
I guess he just learned the very valuable lesson that one should spend more time observing, studying and learning about the new culture they find themselves living in than in whining like a 13 year old Karen. This kind of thing might have been something the folks back at home would enjoy, but the general population, especially that of NYC, doesn't.

As for supermarkets, bodegas are part of the culture. There is no "food desert" problem. There are plenty of supermarkets in equally poor neighborhoods throughout NYC. People just go to bodegas. Where there is demand, there will be supply - but bodegas are popular.

They're neighborhood stores, corner stores.
Growing up you went to the deli for some stuff, the fruit stand for other stuff, the Italian store for more other stuff, the Italian pork store for others, the other deli in case you needed something the first didn't have, and the other Italian store on the nest street over if you couldn't find it at one of the other two. And Wawa. Plus there was a Shop-Rite a few blocks away if you needed it.
If your neighborhood had enough Puerto Rican people some of those Italian stores would be bodegas.
All of them, except Wawa, are specialized general stores. Wawa is a convenience store.
