The Babylon Bee: The Absurdity of Reality 'Makes Our Job Very Difficult'

The Christian satire site has met the ire of fact-checkers for pushing back against left-leaning humor.

A woman tells the cop who stopped her in a carpool lane she's allowed to drive there because her pronouns are "they" and "them."

That's from a video by a conservative Christian satire site called The Babylon Bee. Their humor gets millions of views.

"Christian conservatives used to…be very dour and self-serious," says Bee editor-in-chief Kyle Mann in my new video.

Today, he says, it's the left who are self-serious. "They're the ones that have trouble laughing at themselves."

For example, late night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert passionately defend COVID-19 vaccines.

"It is a lecture," complains Mann.

"The left used to be anti-establishment," adds Bee actress Chandler Juliet. Now, she says, 'They've become the blob.…We're super happy to be leading the comedic conversation on the right."

One Babylon Bee video, "The Woke Zone," makes fun of the way the media ignored violence and arson during the George Floyd protests.

"Do you ever feel gratitude to the left that they give you so much material?" I ask.

"We have to write things that are funnier than things they're actually doing," Mann responds. "That makes our job very difficult."

One Bee sketch portrays its writers struggling to find new material.

"John Kerry warns that the war in Ukraine might distract from climate change!" suggests one.

Can't do it, explains another. "It actually happened." Yes, Kerry really did say that.

"Cosmo magazine features a morbidly obese woman on the cover as the picture of health" and, "Math professor says 'two plus two equals four' is racist!" are among other ideas that can't be used as jokes.

"A math professor really said two plus two equals four is racist?" I ask.

It's "a colonialist, white supremacist idea," explains Mann.

Today the Bee reaches more people than The Onion. The establishment doesn't like that, so some people actually sic so-called fact checkers on the Bee.

One article fact-checked by Snopes was titled, "Bernie Sanders Vows To Round Up Remaining ISIS Members, Allow Them To Vote."

"Does Snopes not understand that you're making jokes?" I ask.

"I think that they know what our intention is," answers Juliet. "They just don't like us."

Recently, Twitter banned the Bee. Their offense was tweeting an article that named Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine "Babylon Bee's Man of the Year."

Levine is a transgender woman. Calling her the man of the year is a joke I wouldn't make. But it doesn't need to be censored.

Twitter says they'll allow the Bee back on the platform only if they delete the tweet. Mann says he won't.

"Twitter has the capability to just delete the tweet themselves. They want us to bend the knee and be the ones to click, 'Yes, we acknowledge hateful conduct.' We're not going to do that."

Today, a lot of comedians attract sizable audiences by mocking the left. Some I found funny are JP Sears, Ryan Long, and FreedomToons.

The culture is changing.

The highest rating late-night comic these days is often not Colbert, Kimmel, or Fallon, but Greg Gutfeld of Fox.

Even a few left-leaning comedians like Ricky Gervais and Dave Chappelle are mocking the intolerant left.

"I talk about AIDS, famine, cancer, the Holocaust, rape, pedophilia…the one thing you mustn't joke about is identity politics," says Gervais in his recent Netflix special.

Professional media critics trashed him for that. But the special was hugely popular with the public.

The Rotten Tomatoes ratings are revealing. Critics gave Gervais' special a 29 percent rating, calling it "terribly unfunny" and "a detestable combination of smug and obtuse."

Viewers gave it a 92 percent rating.

The same is true of Chapelle's latest special, The Closer. Critics give it just 40 percent. The audience gives it 95 percent.

Clearly, many people are tired of smug, condescending humor.

I'm glad The Babylon Bee, and others, give us an alternative.

God— Babylon Bee editor— as a gay, Black man who is GOP Proud like Caitlin and Milo I sure can relate. It sure is a challenge to parody my political enemies when they continue to act like crazy loons. And when I refer to “crazy loons” I’m referring to ANTHONY Fauci and Merrick Garland. How does anyone take them seriously?

BTW, Can you guys contribute to my givesendgo account to combat the Jan 6th hoax?

Parody: an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.

Whatever you’re doing, it clearly isn’t that.

      1. Illocust   3 years ago

He's trying to parody OBL's style, but not succeeding.

        1. Sevo   3 years ago

OBL has a good chance of being right in suggesting that pile of shit is a commie-kid sock.

        3. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

The fun question is why does OBL work? I think that it's a combination of his constancy and that the voice of his parody is very earnest.
During some of the abortion discussion he actually became quite hard-edged and the actor leaked through and it was less effective. It was interesting. Being a sort of forthright, hyper earnest college student type is funny and sort of fits with a perceived stereotype of a certain wokester.

          1. MK Ultra   3 years ago

His "Cuomo literally wrote the book on pandemic response" posts were excellent.

          2. mad.casual   3 years ago

OBL isn't funny satire, he's pointed satire. Like LibsOfTikTok, he isn't trying to one up the hyperbole, he's just reflecting it.

      2. Ali Akbar Alexander   3 years ago

Here’s what I’m doing— just so you’ll know the process behind my conservative comedy.

In order I… a.) clench my ass, b.) suck air through my teeth, and then c.) make a misogynistic joke to some FoxNews bimbo who gets paid 10 million dollars/yr to laugh at my joke (who cares about people who have smelly vaginas anyway?) I learned this process from comedy mastermind Greg Gutfeld. Am I doing it wrong?

Will you at least contribute to my givesendgo account to combat the Jan 6th hoax? You seem like the sort of guy that would do that.

        1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Poor Shrike. You can't understand the difference between parody and angry strawmanning, and that's why you always flop.

        2. Aloysious   3 years ago

Clearly, many people are tired of smug, condescending humor.

Might want to ponder that line for a few minutes.

    2. Earth-based Human Skeptic   3 years ago

No, but I will give you $5 to kill yourself.

    4. EISTAU Gree-Vance   3 years ago

Wow! Caitlin and Milo are black?

I guess people can identify as anything they want these days. Fun times…

  2. Overt   3 years ago

I listen to Netflix is a Joke on SiriusXM when I am driving around. A trip to the store generally gets me 2 - 3 of these little short segments of a comic's routine.

The Trump years were terribly unfun. The dude was such an easy target, and he was so safe that there are just hundreds of these clips out there. Sheesh.

    1. JesseAz   3 years ago

Was actually disappointed in Bill Burrs last special as he took the easy jabs around conservatives instead of the biting comedy he usually goes for. He was the host, so wasn't his best stuff. But was disappointing.

  3. Zeb   3 years ago

It was so hard they had to make another site for stuff that seems like parody but is real.
I'm pretty far from a conservative Christian, but I think they have some of the best political parody stuff out there.

    1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

I like them. I think they're kind of iffy, and when they get really partisan they get worse. Still, they're able to balance that at least a little bit and produce good jokes about ridiculous things.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

I say this as someone who probably takes comedy too seriously, though. And my critiques are not political in nature.
Similar to a lot of popular comedy during the Trump years. My fundamental complaint has always been that they stopped making actual jokes.

        1. Sevo   3 years ago

"...Similar to a lot of popular comedy during the Trump years. My fundamental complaint has always been that they stopped making actual jokes."

          Similarly, Bush:

      2. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

They're funniest when they're mocking evangelicals because they are their victim.

        For example:
Worship Leader Feels Called By God To Be Famous, Wealthy
        or
Horrified Baptist Parents Discover 'Fortnite' Contains Dancing

        1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

Although today's political headline is pretty on the nose:

Nancy Pelosi Recommends Avoiding Pain At The Pump By Becoming A Millionaire Through Insider Trading

          1. BestUsedCarSales   3 years ago

Another complaint about their headlines. A bit too long. That's a good joke, they need to wordsmith it slightly more. Headlines need punch, and not just joke headlines.
It's hard though, they do crowdsource a lot of their articles so they don't have what you get from having a smaller core set of writers with specific styles.

Let's not take my commentary as saying they're not pretty good though. This is pure comedy nerd analysis on my part.

            1. Mother's Lament   3 years ago

"Pelosi Says Avoid Pain At Pump Through Insider Trading" would've indeed been punchier.

"Come on, man! I ain't kidding around here! No joke! You gotta lower your prices! Do the right thing for God's sake!" said Biden as he shook his fist at the giant sign. "You're killing me here! This ain't hard! Just be cheaper! Like, be two or maybe three bucks, max! This ain't funny anymore!"

The President then lowered his voice to a creepy low whisper and said: "Here's the rub, 7-Eleven. Drop your prices or I drop you, you get me?"

    1. Ali Akbar Alexander   3 years ago

Not me. I find your jokes wishing Alzheimer’s on Joe Biden and Parkinson’s Disease on HRC downright hilarious. Hahahaha… amazing. The comic timing.

I don't think I've changed much, but I was a big fan of late night comedy 5 years ago. Now I can't stand it and I think all the best comedy is coming from right leaning people, or at least anti-woke. I even pay for Babylon Bee.

    1. Truthfulness   3 years ago

If you were a joke yourself, then the answer is "yes".

    2. Ed Grinberg   3 years ago

      In Tony's world:
      - If A tells a politically-incorrect joke, he goes to prison.
      - If B laughs at A's joke, he goes to prison.
      - If C doesn't report A & B to the proper authorities, he goes to prison.
      I can't remember -- does Tony claim he's a libertarian?
