4 Years After the FCC Repealed Net Neutrality, the Internet Is Better Than Ever
Plus: Pfizer's new pill prevents severe disease from the omicron coronavirus variant, Boston University has a bizarre Title IX training module, and more...

Exactly four years ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) repealed the internet regulation known as net neutrality, which had forced internet service providers (ISPs) to treat all content identically in terms of download and streaming speeds, for instance. Since the popular policy had come into existence during the Obama administration, and was gutted during President Donald Trump's term, its demise was treated as the end of the internet as we know it by panic-stricken #resistance liberals. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) predictably said the Republican attack on net neutrality was an attack on democracy itself. (What isn't?)
The term net neutrality was coined by law professor Tim Wu in 2006; his big idea was that the government needed the power to restrict ISPs' ability to offer different levels of service to different customers. "Throughout the '00s and into the late Obama years, Wu cautioned that without rules requiring internet service providers to treat all traffic and content equally, the internet as we had come to know it would cease to exist," wrote Reason's Elizabeth Nolan Brown, summarizing Wu's position. "Big corporations would create a digital fast lane for rich users and content providers, while average people would suffer through slow service and throttled access."
The fact that the internet had operated for years with minimal government intervention, never producing such a two-tiered system, did not deter Wu, and the Obama administration eventually codified net neutrality under Title II of the Communications Act of 1934. (Wu now serves as an adviser on technology policy for the Biden administration). When then–FCC Chairman Ajit Pai undid the policy on December 14, 2017, Democratic policy makers and pundits widely anticipated that the end was nigh.
Again, that was four years ago. Today, the internet is still here, and still functioning properly. Expectations that ISPs would practice widespread and improper discrimination did not pan out. On the contrary, the internet is better and faster for basically everybody than it was when net neutrality ended—in fact, it's better and faster than at any point in the past.
Nathan Leamer, a former adviser to Pai and current public affairs executive, pointed out on Tuesday that the chicken littles of net neutrality never recanted their dire predictions.
https://twitter.com/NathanLeamerDC/status/1470752022416838661
His Twitter thread included fascinating examples. CNN.com's front page declared "the end of the internet as we know it" under a breaking news tab: This was a news story, rather than an opinion piece, in other words.
Senate Democrats made an equally extreme claim: that without net neutrality, the internet would load one word at a time.
If
we
don't
save
net
neutrality,
you'll
get
the
internet
one

— Senate Democrats (@SenateDems) February 27, 2018
Needless to say, that didn't happen. None of it did. Foes of net neutrality were clearly correct that the internet didn't need the government to save it, and absent federal direction and regulation, everything is fine.

Boston University's mandatory Title IX training forces participants to affirm that they would intervene in a situation where one person compliments another person's spouse or family, even if the comment prompts smiles and laughter. According to The Washington Free Beacon:
Several scenarios involved "bystander intervention," the idea that onlookers should prevent harassment by inserting themselves into potentially inappropriate encounters. In one vignette, an Asian woman is told that her white husband is "good-looking" and that "half-Asian babies are the cutest." Asked "what should you do," students and faculty were forced to select "Intervene" to advance through the training. Even though the woman "smiled" at the compliment, the training explains, she still "might have felt uncomfortable" about comments relating to "her race, her husband's appearance, or the prospect of having children" itself.
The training also required students and faculty to affirm that people "rarely" make false accusations. "You might be surprised to learn that false reports aren't common, and frivolous claims are almost nonexistent," the training says. "Sometimes" was not an acceptable answer—though one study found that as many as two-thirds of hate crime accusations turn out to be false.

Pfizer's COVID-19 pill, which has yet to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), works very well against the omicron variant, according to new research conducted by the company. "We are confident that, if authorized or approved, this potential treatment could be a critical tool to help quell the pandemic," Albert Bourla, Pfizer's CEO, said in a statement.
According to The New York Times:
Last month, Pfizer asked the Food and Drug Administration to authorize the pill, known as Paxlovid, based on a preliminary batch of data. The new results will undoubtedly strengthen the company's application, which could mean that Americans infected with the virus may have access to the pill within weeks.
In Tuesday's announcement, Pfizer said that if given within three days of the onset of symptoms, Paxlovid reduced the risk of hospitalization and death by 89 percent. If given within five days, the risk was reduced almost as much, to 88 percent.
The results, based on an analysis of 2,246 unvaccinated volunteers at high risk of severe disease, largely match the company's initial, smaller analysis of the clinical trial, released last month.
Pfizer said that 0.7 percent of patients who received Paxlovid were hospitalized within 28 days of entering the trial, and none died. By contrast, 6.5 percent of patients who received a placebo were hospitalized or died.
Maybe the FDA could move a little faster, please?

Pfizer's COVID-19 pill, which has yet to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), works very well against the omicron variant, according to new research conducted by the company.
Sounds like the same words they used for the vaccine that is failing.
The big question is: Does it work as well as my tiger rock works at keeping tigers out of my yard?
Jerry, I wanna buy your rock.
White Mike thinks it does.
You got any extras? My Corgi is a good dog, but I'm afraid a tiger would fuck him up. It's not worth the risk if I can just buy a few of your tiger rocks.
If your corgi is as loud as my old neighbors corgi and starts barking at sunup, I'm rooting for the tiger.
He's pretty quiet. Rarely barks, but does so at passing geese and random shit occasionally. He's worth protecting with tiger rocks.
How do you know it's not the vaccines that are keeping tigers out of your yard?
Yeah. Put that in your "bread crumbs" and follow that!
Folks, if COVID-19 hits as hard as the stomach virus that put me in the hospital for two days, I want none of it.
And the vaccine and booster kept the hospital from putting me in the COVID-19 ward when my stomach virus hit, so it must be a Helluva tiger rock!
Now I'm not saying "There Oughtta Be A Law..." but like Ferris Bueller, I do say: "It is so choice! If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up!"

So if my horse had worms, I could use the Pfizer pill for that?
No, you have to use the paste.
Do you have a horse, of course, of course?
No. They are expensive and I’m too cheap to pony up the money.
If you became Mare of a town, you could live high on the hoof from grift and afford one.
And you could chase fillies or colts or both, depending on which side of the fenceposts you trot.
Pfizermectin. It's totally different from hoRsE paSTe because it's a different color and Bailey likes it.
And Trump never mentioned it.

They learned from that, though.
They learned they also had to buy the regulators.
Big corporations would create a digital fast lane for rich users and content providers, while average people would suffer through slow service and throttled access.
When in fact as we all know, the super rich instead just created a secret internet where they hunt people for sport.
So my highschool days of Diablo Lan parties?
So sort of like the California highway department and rich Tesla owners?
Dude, please. The first rule of Secret Internet is you don't talk about Secret Internet.
Its not a secret, they do it openly now.

25 Best Engineering Jokes That Will Make Your Day Better
1,2
Engineers have a very particular sense of humor, one that many people just don't understand. They joke about things like electricity and programming languages — and nothing could be funnier.
If you need some more material or just need to brighten up your day, here are 25 of the best engineering jokes from across the web.
1. Engineers on a train
engineering jokes tickets please
Source: Donnie Nunley/Flickr
Three engineers and three mathematicians are on a train going to a conference. The mathematicians each bought a ticket. The engineers have one between them. As the conductor starts walking through the train car, the engineers all rush off and jump into the small lavatory.
The conductor knocks on the door of the lavatory and says "Ticket, please."
RELATED: TOP 10 THINGS ONLY ENGINEERS UNDERSTAND
At which point the engineers slide the one ticket through a ventilation slot and the conductor punches it. The mathematicians think this looks like a good trick and decide to try it on the train ride back home.
As the mathematicians board the train they have one ticket between them. The engineers have no ticket!
After a while, one of the engineers says, "Here comes the conductor!" So all three mathematicians jump up and run into the lavatory with their one ticket.
One of the engineers goes to the lavatory door and says "Ticket, please."

2. The blind firemen
engineering jokes golf
Source: Paul Benson/Flickr
A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"
The priest said, "Here comes the green-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello George, what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"
The green-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."
The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything he can do for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"

An engineer, a statistician, and a physicist are out hunting. They spot a buck, and each take turns to try and bag it. The physicist goes first. He pulls out his lab book and quickly calculates the trajectory of the bullet, assuming it is a perfect sphere in a vacuum.
The bullet falls 20m short of the deer.
The engineer goes second. He pulls out his engineer's pad and book of projectile assumptions. After a few minutes he’s ready, he takes aim, and fires.
The bullet lands 20m passed the deer. The statistician leaps in the air shouting, “We got it!”

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Manager asked the young engineer fresh out of university, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"
The engineer said, "In the neighborhood of $100,000 a year, depending on the benefit's package."
The HR Manager said, "Well, what would you say to a package of $200,000 a year, 5 weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental coverage, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years — say, a red Mercedes?"
The engineer sat up straight and said, "Wow!!! Are you joking?"
HR Manager says, "Of course, ...but you started it."

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints!"
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."
The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through the recreational area?"

“Aha”, says the engineer, “I see that Scottish sheep are black.”
“Hmm”, says the physicist, “You mean that some Scottish sheep are black”.
“No”, says the mathematician, “All we know is that there is at least one sheep in Scotland and that at least one side of that one sheep is black!”

11. The most brilliant joke ever written
engineering jokes hide and seek
Source: Shawn Rossi/Flickr
One day, Einstein, Newton, and Pascal meet up and decide to play a game of "hide and seek". Einstein volunteered to go first.
As he counted, Pascal ran away scrambling to find a great hiding place. Giddily, he squeezed into a crawl space sure that he would win this time as this was his best hiding spot to date and Newton surely wouldn't find an equal.
Newton, on the other hand, stood right in front of Einstein, pulled out a piece of chalk, and drew a box on the ground of roughly 1x1 meters. Once this was completed, he sat down neatly inside the box and waited for Einstein to finish counting.
When Einstein opened his eyes, he of course saw Newton and with a bit of disappointment said “I found you, Newton, you lose”... but Newton replied, “On the contrary, you are looking at one Newton over a square meter... Pascal loses!”

Q) How many software developers does it take to change a light bulb?
A) None. That's a hardware issue.
Actual software engineers know they fix hardware by writing software.
Hardware engineers don't make mistakes
Only when software can't save their asses do they make mistakes. Otherwise spec.
So what now, I can't tell a joke without JesseAz turning it into a personal attack?
Dude needs a life. Bad.
Peek a boo.
What personal attack. I was discussing software engineers dummy.
And he keeps replying as if I read his comments. Dude, you're on mute because you have never once ever argued with me honestly and in good faith. Never. Whatever you say is a prelude to some kind of personal attack. You argue against things I never said nor did, and never with what I actually say. So rather than be Charlie Brown kicking the football, I put you on mute.
Yet you insist upon replying to a good 90% of my comments. (interestingly you never join in any conversations about libertarian stuff like economics, and you keep calling me a leftist, which shows how dishonest you are.)
All you're doing is virtue signaling to the girls with your comments. That's it.
You are a troll. Nothing more. Please oh please, leave me the fuck alone.
So you lied when you called it a personal attack. As usual.
Also for someone claiming to have me on mute you sure do assert what I say a lot. All those assertions bring wrong of course. Makes your comment below about Ken even more ironic.
Software engineers know that the best way to fix hardware issues is to turn it off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on again.
The IT Crowd approves.
How many electrical engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
None. They simply redefine darkness as the industry standard.
Q) How many flies does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A) Two. But nobody knows how they get in there.
Not engineering related but bug related...
Q) Have you ever smelled moth balls?
A) Yes.
Q) How'd you get their tiny legs apart?
I might tell that to my 12 yr old. She'll like it.
Q) How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
... wait for the person to start saying "I don't know" or "how many?" and then loudly interrupt with
A) ONE GOD DAMMIT!
Q) How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
37. One to screw in the light bulb, and 36 to produce a documentary about i.
h/t - John Cleese
How many electrical engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
We could give you a light bulb that doesn't need replacing if the marketing guys would get out of the way!
If the Electrical Engineer was Lyndon LaRouche (which he was by trade,) he'd blame the lack of eternal light bulbs on The International Zionist AIDS/Drugs/Grain Cartel headed by The Queen of England.
I don't know how to respond. Fuck Joe Biden?
Always a good response.
How many Joe Bidens does it take to fuck up a lightbulb?
No answer. He's too busy with his hair-pie and Jello Pudding Pops.
The fact of the matter is that "net neutrality" was never about keeping data rates constant; it was all based on a stupid notion that data transport happens by magic, and doesn't need to be managed based on user demand and bandwidth availability at any given time. Like a lot of progressive ideas, it was rooted in their control freak fantasias, not reality.
Its a bunch of tubes.
So Joefriday is a tube sock?
Joe's a little old for a tube sock, IYKWIMAITYD.
It was really based on the idea that bandwidth provision and rolling out new hardware is free.

"panic-stricken #resistance liberals"
That's not a nice way to describe our progressive allies.
If only Shika was still here to set a good for the rest of the staff.
Twitch suspended two popular streamers—Hasan and Vaush, a self-described "libertarian socialist"—for using the word cracker during a stream. The platform considered this a racial slur.
They should have been suspended for marrying libertarian and socialist.
Putting on the Ritz is against policy.
No such thing. Libritarianism and socialism are mutually exclusive.
Now sbp, sarc, Tony etc will be along to say socialism is great
When did I ever say that?
Oh, you said it alright. Liberal!/Democrat!/Progressive!
Has anyone ever noticed that the commenters here who are identified as conservatives, Republicans or even Trumpistas, wear those label proudly, but the obvious progs and 'Democrats here try and pretend that they aren't?
Most of acknowledge our biases. We aren't lying to other people to try to trick them or gaslight them. This is not true of the leftists here who have to constantly remind people they call themselves libertarian. It's the old "leftists doth protest too much" canard.
White MIke has to constantly claim he is a libertarian in thread after thread so he can say he isn't a lefty... while gaslighting as a lefty... and claiming he has no biases but is the golden mean.
Sarcasmic has also adopted this rhetoric.
I openly think the left is far worse than the right. I say so. I attack the left for their authoritarianism.
Sarcasmic claimed 2 days ago in a discussion with Overt that he actually agrees the left is "slightly" worse than the right... but he only attacks the right and claims he has no biases. He also attacks those who actually do think the left is worse. And he does so in every thread critical of the left. He is lying to himself and everyone else.
The irony is that those they call right wingers have called out the GOP recently almost across the board, yet they can never call out the left.
"a self-described "libertarian socialist""
So is that what the commies are calling themselves nowadays? One second of listening to either of the two quickly reveals they are standard issue communist-utopia dreamers.
Organic, free-range Marxist?
Straight Edge Vegan Leninist? Hipster Stalinist? Bohemian Tankie? Scene Kid Trotskyite? Emo Pol Pot Year Zeroist?
White trust fund Rastafarian (a real thing in Boulder).
Only if the cops don't asset forfeiture the trust fund, something these stoners never think about.
Head over to the libertarian reddit. "Libertarian socialists" are quite common. Basically they're extremist Nolan Chart liberals. All in favor of civil liberties and ending war on drugs, etc., but on the economic spectrum they want to get rid of property and jobs and shit.
To be fair, there's also a hell of a lot of "libertarians" who are basically extremist Nolan Chart conservatives. Nothing a corporation can do would be considered wrong, the only virtue is profit, etc. But want to keep the war on drugs, build the border wall, imprison immigrants, reverse gay marriage, etc.
The libertarian reddit has no real libertarians in it. The closest are anarchists who go around calling actual libertarians "socialist" for not sucking Dave Smith's dick.
Those people aren't libertarians. They may think they are, but they're just social conservatives.
Not sure you're someone who should be identifying as libertarian when you don't even believe in self defense as a right. It just sucks Rittenhouse got off you know.
Likewise you seem fine with government overreach as long as it isn't done by the right. You only seem to scream at the one side. Weird.
Yes, but that socialist libertarianism isn't really libertarian at all. They want to abolish property and money and force everyone into a communal system. It's authoritarian as fuck but they delude themselves into thinking everyone will agree with it and go along. They claim to be aligned with libertarians because they hate the police but they have no idea how their laws will be enforced, or how they'll force rich people to give up their property.
Yeah, same problem as all the other socialists. They think they can change human nature.
Libertarianism doesn't, strictly speaking, require capitalism/market economics. But all evidence suggests that if you leave people to voluntarily organize themselves, they will create markets and traditions of private property ownership.
It's not just anti-libertarian because it wouldn't work. There's a lot of ideas that don't work but would be consistent with the principles of libertarianism.
The reason it's anti-liberty is because there's no choices. You can't opt out of the socialist system, you're stuck living in a system with no property and communal ownership. In a libertarian system, if you really wanted to opt into communism, you could. You could go found a commune in the middle of nowhere with all the people you want to invite. You can start up worker co-op where ownership is shared amongst the workers. You're free to follow socialist principles in a capitalist system. You're not free to follow capitalist principles in a socialist system.
This is the most important point. We'd allow them to do their own thing, they would not return the favor.
The crazy thing about socialism is that it actually works with small groups such as families and tribes. It's done voluntarily, not through force, and because everyone knows each other, shirkers are identified and shamed. It wouldn't surprise me if human beings are hardwired for socialism.
The problem of course is that it doesn't scale. Once the group gets too big it becomes forced, not voluntary, and shirkers do whatever they want.
What does scale is capitalism. All you need is protection of private property and enforcement of contracts. Then capitalism naturally arises from human action, but not human design.
I'd say we're probably hard wired for cooperative, communal living. In small groups, as you say.
I'd reserve the name "socialism" for the attempts at scaling that up to the societal level.
I'd reserve the name "socialism" for the attempts at scaling that up to the societal level.
I prefer to used adjectives like "voluntary" and "forced."
It is all about trust, sarcasmic = The crazy thing about socialism is that it actually works with small groups such as families...
I personally do not trust the government, and history bears that suspicion out. Also sarcasmic, Thatcher was right about socialism. I have never heard a good counter-argument to her point.
Agreed.
I hate to use the word, capitalism. It was Marx' word. Also "capitalism" to a lot of people means what a libertarian would call "crony capitalism", which is a real thing, and a bad thing. I prefer "free market" economy.
Although I'm a libertarian, I'm open to the possibility that we don't really understand what we are doing. That is, some future Adam Smith might well come along and explain that there is a better paradigm that we primitive people have missed seeing.
There are a lot of weird things about how human society is organized right now, and maybe we are missing a better way.
We still organize the world's territory into nation-states, which is at best 19th century state of the art political organization. Why not some kind of cyber nation state, or layered network of regional governments governing different aspects of our lives -- or whatever.
There is all kinds of experimentation with what "money" is right now. We are struggling a bit to determine what really works as a store of value in a world where the virtual has a bigger and bigger role relative to the physical.
We may be on the verge of being able to achieve a level of "post-scarcity" economy.
A lot is up in the air, and maybe there is a paradigm beyond what we now think is the best way of doing things.
I meant to write "cyber city state" , not "cyber nation state".
You misunderstand Adam Smith; he wasn't telling people how to be capitalists, he was merely describing the economic process. The resource cost of any good is inherently higher in place where that good is highly sought-after and also rare. It doesn't matter if someone is consciously raising up the price, or if there's a purely tribal situation of people murdering each other for limited food stores.
So we're not going to completely redesign the economic system just because some new person has a new theory. We might just have a better understanding about how describe and explain the economic process, but the principles underneath it will not change.
I don’t know how you can conclude that I misunderstand Adam Smith when I barely said anything about him. He was just an example of someone who came up with an new economic paradigm.
Agreed. New paradigms in science or other fields are often about refinement, not complete redesign of everything.
Although I'm a libertarian, I'm open to the possibility that we don't really understand what we are doing.
That's because we don't. The economy is a creation of human action, not human design. Any attempt to design an economy always ends in disaster.
There are a lot of weird things about how human society is organized right now, and maybe we are missing a better way.
I agree about the weird things, but it's because we're organized from within, not without. An attempts to design society always end in disaster.
We still organize the world's territory into nation-states, which is at best 19th century state of the art political organization. Why not some kind of cyber nation state, or layered network of regional governments governing different aspects of our lives -- or whatever.
Because laws are enforced with violence. For this to happen, an organization of men must have the last word in violence. That's what government is. When people compete over who has the last word, it's called war. That's why any form of anarchism is unrealistic. Some gang of men with guns will gain the last word, and they become government.
We may be on the verge of being able to achieve a level of "post-scarcity" economy.
People have been saying that for over a hundred years.
“The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.”
― Thomas Sowell
A lot is up in the air, and maybe there is a paradigm beyond what we now think is the best way of doing things.
All capitalism requires is property rights, contract enforcement, courts to resolve disputes without violence, and criminal law. None of that is forced. And what emerges isn't designed.
Any "paradigm" would require force. I'm not down with that.
“Any ‘paradigm’ would require force.”
I don’t follow why that would necessarily be so.
Economics has always been about scarcity, but it’s possible we are bumping up against the limits of that basis for defining what economics is.
"All in favor of civil liberties and ending war on drugs, etc., but on the economic spectrum they want to get rid of property and jobs and shit."
If by jobs they mean work, then at least they are consistent, since no work means no property.
So basically Crypto-Stalinist Commie Tankies to the Left and Hoppean AnCap Alt-Right Copter Pilots to the Right.
A real Libertarian greases his own Red Barchetta and zooms in between and out from under both of them, flipping them the bird as they eat his dust!
And Dave Smith? Who dat?
The libertarian sub is cancer. There was a concerted effort by Chapo tankie a to take it over and they succeeded.
R/libertarianmeme is usually pretty decent though.
It means you're allowed to read whatever you want while you're waiting in line for bread.
As long as it isn't misinformation.
So white people aren't allowed to say "cracker"? I thought it was OK to use racial epithets directed at your own race.
White people are down to saying "sorry for everything".
First time I was in the deep south I visited a cracker barrel. It was.
They had cracker barrels in California. Are you that ignorant?
White people can say cracka. Why? Because they are crackers.
Vaush has no libertarian beliefs in any way, shape, or form.
and Hasan I believe was the commie hypocrite that demands his socialist utopia and equal outcomes but got himself a sweet multi-million dollar mansion in LA rather than distribute his money to the many homeless that need it.
Oh wait, am I getting him mixed up with the BLM marxist that did the same? Its so hard to keep track of the marxists that want the rich to pay for everything and then end up scamming poor people into buying them a mansion.
I was about to say that. Vaush is a far-left socialist.
Is Hasan and Vaush a single person? Cojoined twins?
They're like a really unfunny vaudeville comedy act.
Is Hasan and Vaush a single person? Cojoined twins? A Borg-created amalgam?
Sorry. It posted when I thought it didn't. Technical difficulties?
I don't think Hasan should have been suspended because I don't believe hate speech exists. But he did not just say the word "cracker" as a slur. He's been using "cracker" as a slut for a long time. What happened recently is that went on a very lengthy rant defending it and basically laid out a whole treatise on why you should be racist toward white people.
If Twitch's policy is that they don't want racism on their platform, he violated it. I think he should be allowed to say this shit because it exposes exactly what kind of asshole he really is, but still. What most people are hearing is merely his side of the story where he claims he was banned because he said the word without the context of him being racist as fuck.
That is one marriage of which I will never approve. Freedom-lovers and Totalitarians should each stick to their own kind or one or both would end up dead.
"Big corporations would create a digital fast lane for rich users and content providers, while average people would suffer through slow service and throttled access."
Just like government?
Or restaurants.
A QAnon supporter received a 28-month prison sentence for making death threats against Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Well, this certainly isn't going to convince him they're not pedos.
I wonder what kind of prison status his "crime" will give him.
Ackchyually, making death threats is an actual un-quotated crime.
Does it really matter what QAnonners think?
I don't care about what lunatic notions QAnonners hold. Death threats are death threats and dezerve punishment, even against Nancy Lugosi and the Sha-Na-Na Mayor of DC.
By the way, QAnon doth protest way too much, methinks:

Today, the internet is still here, and still functioning properly.
But just imagine how much better it would be if government were in charge of it! Look at what a fine job they've done with all the other things they've been put in charge of!
I look forward to the internet mandates.
If you like your service provider, you can keep your service provider.
You must get an internet booster every four months.
Jeff would much prefer government internet. Just because they might not have done it perfectly one time doesn't mean the won't do it perfectly every time going forward.
Just wait for the VPN mandates.
A VPN mandate from Government? Only if the Government is suicidal.
China will pay for it!
Or a billionaire tax. Because feelingz of jealouzy.
I bet if Hillary won in 2016, Net Neutrality would have also died a death. Got a few million extra to bet on that...
She did.... CROSSCHECK
Somebody sounds like a filthy insurrectionist...
'Several scenarios involved "bystander intervention," the idea that onlookers should prevent harassment by inserting themselves into potentially inappropriate encounters. In one vignette, an Asian woman is told that her white husband is "good-looking" and that "half-Asian babies are the cutest." '
This training scenario is extremely sexist. It should read "birthing person" and "sperm source". Hey, BU, get woke!
ps. Asians are NOT a worthy protected class--trick question!
How many chicken shits that write this would be willing to step in and intervene in a conversation? They are getting to the point that a little pushback causes all the wokeness to crumble.
At least when not in a mob of 100 or more.
Fingers crossed that the Asian woman tells them to fuck off.
How do you have an entire writeup on net neutrality and not mention that Bidens nominee wants to once again instill net neutrality?
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/telecom-broadband-industries-block-biden-fcc-nominee-delay-Democratic-regulations-Gigi-Sohn
Is it ignorance? This would put the majority of the board as democrats and they could implement net neutrality. Seems like something worth mentioning in the article.
This was a reason roundup. It's something that's posted every morning that includes a lot of highlights and a small focus on a particular topic by the author. Thanks for giving some context about the future to a small article that focused on comparing the past and present of net neutrality and it's effectiveness.
Umm... the portion about net neutrality wasn't a highlight dummy. It was the main of the article.
My god, you Reason defenders are dense.
To be fair, it's not reasonable to expect him to read the article.
Pfizer's COVID-19 pill, which has yet to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), works very well against the omicron variant, according to new research conducted by the company. "We are confident that, if authorized or approved, this potential treatment could be a critical tool to help quell the pandemic,"
Somebody thinks the feds want to quell the pandemic.
Somebody has paranoid theories that they don’t.
When you drag something out for two fucking years so you can expand your power, it’s easy to see why they might not want it to end.
Hush. Mike is on the spectrum and struggles with sarcasm.
If you can claim your comment was merely sarcastic, I can, too. Which would make two of us struggling with sarcasm.
See?
Just to explain to you what sarcasm is in this instance: if you were being sarcastic, it would mean that you really think the Federal government _is_ working to end the pandemic, but you were making fun of people who don’t think that.
Perhaps you meant to say you were jesting or were being facetious, but I doubt you were being sarcastic. Your comment was somewhat aligned with your actual beliefs on the matter.
Feel better now?
Yeah, a bit.
"We are confident that, if authorized or approved, this potential treatment could be a critical tool to help quell the pandemic,"
Have I pointed out recently that Pfizer has racked up over 4 BILLION in fines, mostly for false claims and unapproved promotion of medical products?
The Air Force discharged 27 enlistees who refused to get vaccinated.
Now going off into the wild blue yonder without getting Pfizer its airfare.

Families are rightly upset that the price of meat has gone through the roof.
What is she talking about? Meat hasn't gotten more expensive. In fact literally nothing has gotten more expensive — except spittin' tobaccy, by $0.10 per pouch. Reason.com's leading economics expert has clarified this several times.
#InflationIsAWingnutMyth
#DefendBidenAtAllCosts
Yes, but we now have a spittin’ tobaccy based economy.
spittin' tobaccy, by $0.10 per pouch
Hey, quit stealing my material.
It's not stealing if I properly cite you. Obviously everyone here knows who I mean when I reference "Reason.com's leading economics expert."
After the extra 9.7% wholesale inflation number yesterday, I expect all the wingnuts to be paying an extra $.11 instead of $.10. Serves those prick right.
I have it muted but I trust that your posts accurately reflect Reason.com's leading economic expert's views. Saves me a lot of time.
And if meat has gotten more expensive, which it totally has not, then buying and eating less meat is good for Americans, who can work more productively on gruel.
Steakholders hardest hit.
Newark, New Jersey, wants to make it illegal to feed the homeless.
Probably should just make it illegal to not have a home. Everything else in New Jerksey is.
Even easier: make it illegal to be homeless!
Don't you progressive? Your thinking is backwards. Make it illegal to own a home, and then the state will assign rooms to all citizens. And then charge taxes, cuz, NJ.
And no driving through New Jersey while towing your home.
Not driving through New Jersey isn't a law, but it is good sense.
So I hear from people who have done it frequently, if you don't gas up before entering New Jersey and you have to stop, the moment you turn your head, you may never see your vehicle again. New Jersey is a one-stop chop-shop.
Not true - we have online gambling!
No wonder Atlantic City went tits up.
Driving through New Jersey sounds like a big gamble from what I heard.

It would be halarious if the next republican president said he would pardon anyone that kills a progressive

Didn't the dude who actually assaulted Rand Paul get less time?
Don't you understand equity? Degree of guilt and scaling of punishment must account for social justice and intersectionality.

However, if a woman told a man he was a "MAGA hat wearing racist fascist" you should immediately punch him in the face.
Not sure I like the odds of the average screecher against a "MAGA hat wearing racist fascist".
That certainly is the more likely scenario at a university these days.
Conservative David Brooks has seen enough of GOP lurch to fascism:
Trumpian Republicanism plunders, degrades, and erodes institutions for the sake of personal aggrandizement. The Trumpian cause is held together by hatred of the Other. Because Trumpians live in a state of perpetual war, they need to continually invent existential foes—critical race theory, nongendered bathrooms, out-of-control immigration. They need to treat half the country, metropolitan America, as a moral cancer, and view the cultural and demographic changes of the past 50 years as an alien invasion. Yet pluralism is one of America’s oldest traditions; to conserve America, you have to love pluralism. As long as the warrior ethos dominates the GOP, brutality will be admired over benevolence, propaganda over discourse, confrontation over conservatism, dehumanization over dignity. A movement that has more affection for Viktor Orbán’s Hungary than for New York’s Central Park is neither conservative nor American. This is barren ground for anyone trying to plant Burkean seedlings.

Indeed.
Watch out for Impostor Buttplug though. I'm sure he'll be here any minute with his usual routine, trying to make you look like an incoherent moron. He'll probably say something completely idiotic like "I'm not a Democrat, and I don't root for either party; I just want gridlock."
LOL
As if remaining nonpartisan is a viable stance when you also believe one of the two major parties is literally fascist.

David Brooks read Ken's posts here on Reason!
Ideas!
"Brooks' writing on sociology has been criticized for being based on stereotypes and presenting false claims as factual. In 2004, Sasha Issenberg, writing for Philadelphia magazine, fact-checked Bobos in Paradise, concluding that many of its comments about middle America were misleading or the exact reverse of the truth.[79] He reported Brooks as insisting that the book was not intended to be factual but to report his impressions of what he believed an area to be like: "He laughed ... '[The book was] partially tongue-in-cheek'...I went through some of the other instances where he made declarations that appeared insupportable. He accused me of being 'too pedantic,' of 'taking all of this too literally,' of 'taking a joke and distorting it.' 'That's totally unethical', he said." Brooks later said the article made him feel that "I suck...I can't remember what I said but my mother told me I was extremely stupid."[7] In 2015, an opinion piece by David Zweig published in Salon found that Brooks had got "nearly every detail" wrong about a poll of high-school students.[80]
Michael Kinsley argued that Brooks was guilty of "fearless generalizing ... Brooks does not let the sociology get in the way of the shtick, and he wields a mean shoehorn when he needs the theory to fit the joke".[81] Writing for Gawker, which consistently criticized Brooks' work, opinion writer Tom Scocca argued that Brooks does not use facts and statistics to support his policy positions, noting "possibly that is because he perceives facts and statistics as an opportunity for dishonest people to work mischief".[82] Furthermore, Annie Lowrey, in writing for the New York magazine, criticized Brooks' statistical methods when arguing his stance on political reform, claiming he used "some very tricksy, misleading math".[83]
Additionally, Sean Illing of Slate criticized the same article from Brooks, claiming he argued his point by framing his sources' arguments out of context and routinely making bold "half-right" assumptions regarding the controversial issue of poverty reform.[84]
In 2016, James Taranto criticized[85] Brooks' analysis[86] of the U.S. Supreme Court case Dretke v. Haley,[87] writing that "Brooks's treatment of this case is either deliberately deceptive or recklessly ignorant".[85] Law professor Ann Althouse concurred that Brooks "distorts rather grotesquely" the case in question.[clarification needed][88] Brooks was previously criticized by Lyle Denniston with regard to another case, for having "scrambled the actual significance of what the Supreme Court has done".[89] "
Wow, such an admirably honest and well-spoken critic of President Trump! #believebrooks

Both Sides! - NPR
Critical race theory is not an invention of Trump supporters, and is a racial essentialist ideology which has infected a good portion of the education establishment. The transgendered asserting a right to use institutions reserved for biological females has caused problems for women. What happened on the Texas border with migrants squatting under a bridge showed an inability or squeamishness by the Biden administration to regulate immigration.
Brooks has not demonstrated the unreality of the issues he complains about, he just demonstrates that he wishes they could be ignored.
Trumpians have weaponized CRT though. It is a nearly irrelevant bullshit non-controversy they are whipping up for political gain.
It wasn't Trumpians who tried forcing CRT into schools without parents being informed, lied about CRT not being in schools, doxxed parents when they became informed, charge tens of thousands of dollars for FOIA requests, and even try to arrest/charge parents for protesting at school board meetings.
"who tried forcing CRT into schools without parents being informed, lied about CRT not being in schools, doxxed parents when they became informed, charge tens of thousands of dollars for FOIA requests, and even try to arrest/charge parents for protesting at school board meetings."
But other than those things, not real and irrelevant! It just caused suburban moms to flip from voting Biden/dem to vote Youngkin. Probably just made up stuff
CRT is a weapon of class destruction.
Trumpians have weaponized CRT though. It is a nearly irrelevant bullshit non-controversy they are whipping up for political gain.
No, it's actually the pedagogical foundation of pushing anti-white ideology through school teaching methods and curriculums.
None of this shit would have kicked off if the pandemic hadn't forced teachers to put all their teaching materials and curriculums online, and coupled with the NEA's determination to keep teachers from having to go back in to the classroom with their students, they basically cut their own throats..
BTW have you seen the latest proof of how amazing the Biden economy is?
The WBNWI (Warren Buffett Net Worth Index) went up $2 billion yesterday, and is up over $20 billion this year.
Although I wasn't here from 2009 to 2016, I heard you used the WBNWI (not GDP growth) as your primary metric to prove Obama had created the strongest economy in US history. Well, by this standard the Biden economy is even stronger.
Now change Trump to Progressive, Democrat to Republican, and urban to rural, plus specific references, and the paragraph reads just as true (and trite).
turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
Somebody hates the Other, for sure.
David Brooks is quite fond of the concept of a ruling class, especially since he laughably believes he is in that class.
Remember, he got a hard on for Obama's pants crease.
Shorter Brooks: "Shush, go back to sleep non-leftists, isn't government of any kind horrible? Why would you want to waste your time getting involved in school board meetings when you could be grilling?"
The fact that a controlled opposition mouthpiece like Brooks is trying to downtalk the culture war shows how much pushback against the woke agenda is scaring his lefty boos.
Notice in particular the framing of the warrior ethos as being destructive to society. It would be expected that a soft-handed fop like Brooks would find any kind of displays to masculinity and aggressiveness to be triggering to his memories of getting stuffed in the locker by the jock crowd. However, this is the same guy, much like his colleagues Max Boot and Bill Kristol, who appealed to that same warrior ethos as justification for endless overseas wars, when they'd never even have gone as far as joining the military in a support capacity, much less a combat role themselves.
In short, any screeds against conservatives by the DC crowd can be summarily dismissed from the start as being in bad faith, and there's no reason to take them at face value.
I'm no fan of Viktor Orban...but Central Park?..."where they say you should not wonder after dark?" Is this son-of-a-bitch crazy?

Does Pfizer's new pill prevent severe disease from the omicron variant? Since, From everything I have heard, the omicron variant does not cause severe disease.
The new pill is NOT a vaccine, NOT a preventative. It's a treatment. Meaning you take it after you get sick. Thinking it prevents infection is like thinking abortion prevents pregnancy.
I knew this would happen. The Anti-Vaxx right is now using announced COVID treatments as excuses to not get vaccinated. I mean, why get a free and easy vaccine when you can just go to the hospital instead and pay $5000 per pill in a regimen to keep you from dying horribly?
It's like saying why use condoms when you can just coerce your girlfriend into getting an abortion instead?
You kidding? They won't take the pill. It's an experimental drug. They're not going to be guinea pigs. Besides, COVID is nothing but a bad cold.
All depends on whether Democrats speak favorably of the treatment or not. Right-wingers are obligated to take the opposite stance, whatever that might be.
Seeing as conservatives say get vaccinated but no mandates....
What was your view on ivermectin again? Horse something something.
Besides, COVID is nothing but a bad cold.
---------------
That was my experience. Do I still need the jab or no?
Right-wing anti-vaxxers have adopted the Left’s position of being critical of big pharma making a profit. Will be interesting how that plays into the rhetoric on this one.
Right-wing anti-vaxxers have adopted the Left’s position of being critical of big pharma making a profit.
I can only assume it sounds smarter when you say this shit in your own head.
All they have is strawman. They can't rest on principles as they've attacked vaccines/generics/other treatments merely because it wasn't the government pushed solution, and advertised by conservatives.
They ignore every conservative saying to get vaccinated, just no mandates as they claim they share the same position when they get called out.
It is amazing to watch.
I think you'd be wrong. It sounds dumb in his head too. He just does not care.
yep, the Dotard was even busting Pharma as greedy bastards.
Cite?
I love how self risk analysis has become a cry for anti-vaxx for many. Also that the shot is some how free, but pills cost money is kinda ridiculous too. The shot cost lots of money you just don't have to pay and if you have to pay for the pills that's just government being petty.
Also to add, some people are ok with possible consequences of covid rather than the insanity we are put through day but nannybot5000 can't see past themselves.
Look at the bright side:
The progressive claim that health care is a "human right" is dead as anything can possibly be. You cannot justify removing somebody's human rights because they did something you do not approve of.
Good point - didn't consider that view
Jfreee says you can.
You have literally attacked any treatment that has shown positive correlations in outcomes merely because conservatives have advertised the studies. And you accuse others of politics?
Talk about horse dewormer again Brandy. You are approaching sarc level dishonesty.
So abortion is bad?
You seem to miss the point. Saying this pill is effective at preventing severe disease from the omicron variant. (Read the sub headline again, that is the language I am criticizing), when the omicron variant does not apparently cause a severe case in first place is not saying much.
See how great the pill is?
"...which has yet to gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)"
But isn't delay the FDA's function?
As someone who works in the medical industry, you are very close to the truth. Many new medical products can take ten to fifteen years to reach the market. It's expected that this treatment will receive emergency use authorization due to the pandemic being on and all.
And still the Anti-Medicine crowd will point to EUA as not being full approval and reject it, just as they have rejected the vaccines. It's the Catch-22 of the No Nothings. To accept the efficacy of the vaccines, or this new treatment, is to remove one's membership in the tribe.
The efficacy of the vaccine? We have a saying where I work
"the best scientists and engineers need to change definitions in order to be correct on a technicality"
What about the best lawyers and politicians?
Fantastic claims require fantastic redefinitions.
Odds Brandy invested in Theranos?
And still the Anti-Medicine crowd will point to EUA as not being full approval and reject it, just as they have rejected the vaccines. It's the Catch-22 of the No Nothings.
As opposed to the completely straightforward and entirely sensible, "We need expedited government authorization for mandatory vaccines (and nothing else)." from the "libertarian" "medical" community.
Anti-Medicine crowd

The new report should be out this week or next, and I fully expect the numbers to continue to tumble.
Three important pieces of economic news (links to follow)
1) Retail sales are slowed down in November.
"Sales at U.S. retail stores, online sellers, and restaurants rose by a seasonally-adjusted 0.3% in November from the previous month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That was a slowdown from October’s robust 1.8% increase."
----WSJ (link below)
Progressive trolls may not acknowledge it, but generally speaking, demand falls as prices increase, and there's this general rise in prices thingy called "inflation" happening right now. Is that the only reason sales rose a meager 0.3% in November? No. Did inflation make a significant contribution to that meager demand? The Fed sure seems to think so.
2) The Fed policy statement after its meeting today is widely expected to show the Fed accelerating their plan to stop buying bonds--to let market interest rates rise faster and to accommodate their own raises in the interest rate in the first or second quarter of 2022. (Link Below).
Last month's meeting showed that they are now more concerned with inflation than unemployment--and since inflation is worse now than it was a month ago, we should probably expect to see them announce today that they intend to cut down on the bond buying faster and raise interest rates sooner.
3) The Senate voted to raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion last night.
I said, "the Senate" but every single Democrats voted for it, and not a single Republican did--so I guess that's not a bipartisan bill, even by Reason's standards!
You can see the vote for yourself here:

I've been reading progressive articles since George Floyd about how the Fed acting against inflation is racist--because there are more job opportunities for African-Americans under the conditions of high inflation.

In all seriousness, people who consume all of their income are at the bottom of the economic ladder, and if they're disproportionately African-American, other minorities, or women, then, they probably fare the worst.
demand falls as prices increase
Demand falling? Unpossible! I've seen the footage of people flooding into high end stores just to get their hands on merchandise. Falling demand... phbbbt.
Smash and grab flash mobs may be the ultimate reaction to inflation.

Here's Joe Manchin explaining why he voted to raise the debt ceiling yesterday:
"Defaulting on our debt while we continue to face the COVID-19 pandemic, historically high and rising levels of inflation and numerous uncertainties would have devastating impacts on American workers and the economy. That is why I voted to keep the United States from defaulting on our debt and wreaking havoc on our economy . . . . We have a responsibility to avoid this economic disaster for every American and West Virginian, and I am relieved that Congress could come to an agreement to keep us from the first ever United States default."
----Joe Manchin

Regardless of what you may have seen and heard on Fox News or elsewhere (in regards to McConnell letting them have their vote), it's clear to me that if McConnell hadn't given them the ability to vote solely on raising the debt limit, the progressives would have put the debt limit raise in the BBB budget reconciliation bill--and that would have forced Manchin and Sinema to vote for the BBB budget reconciliation bill. The scenario where Manchin and Sinema let the U.S. government go into default--rather than support the BBB budget reconciliation bill--was never a real possibility in the real world.
Things may still not go the libertarian and capitalist way on the Green New Deal and socialist spending in the BBB budget reconciliation bill, but the real world question was never whether the debt ceiling would be raised by the Democrats. The only question was whether the progressives would also get the BBB budget reconciliation bill in the bargain by forcing Manchin and Sinema to vote for it with the debt ceiling. McConnell letting them have their vote denied the progressives the ability to pressure Manchin and Sinema that way. The clock on the BBB budget reconciliation bill probably runs out at Christmas, and McConnell just pinned them back within their own five yard line.
McConnell and Manchin are almost certainly coordinating on this behind the scenes--just like Manchin and Schumer were negotiating behind the scenes. The game isn't over yet, but I thought we'd have seen the Green New Deal and the expansion and creation of the new entitlement spending back in March or April. That this stuff still hasn't passed is more astounding than when Trump failed to pass a repeal of ObamaCare, and BBB budget reconciliation bill hasn't just stalled by accident. There have been some mistakes made by McConnell, but I think giving the Democrats enough rope to hang themselves was a great move.
McConnell keeps giving up now so he can win later. I get it.
The fact that you think they are forced to vote to raise the debt in order to pay the debt is giving into the liberal narrative on the debt.
The tax revenue in is greater than the debt payments. There is no need to raise the debt except to spend more.
You're allowing Manchin/Sinema, in you writeup, to use a false narrative to justify greater spending. This is the flaw in your reasoning.
I don't know really understand what you're going for here. I'm thinking maybe I didn't make my point clearly enough.
If the only way to get the BBB bill passed by Manchin and Sinema was to make passing it the only way to raise the debt ceiling (and avoid a government default), then Pelosi and Schumer would have done that.
IF IF IF the debt actually went into default because Manchin and Sinema wouldn't budge, Republicans might support the BBB bill on a legitimate fiscally conservative basis. Defaulting on our debt might be the worst thing that could happen from a fiscally conservative standpoint. For one thing, the risk premium we'd need to pay to keep rolling our debt over would be devastating to the taxpayer and devastating from an inflationary perspective. In fact, it would be so devastating that the Fed would jump in for a while and start buying bonds up just before they defaulted to prevent it--which would create a moral hazard incentive for the Democrats to spend more so bad, it's frightening to fathom. Suffice it to say, the negative consequences of defaulting are so onerous that not even the moderate Democrats are willing to suffer that.
AOC and Sanders and the Congressional Progressive Caucus had Manchin and Sinema by the balls. McConnell jumped in at a time when the Democrats were tearing each other apart and offered a political solution to Pelosi's and Schumer's short term political problem--that also took the pressure off of Manchin and Sinema to pass the BBB budget reconciliation bill. I know Tucker Carlson and some other Fox News people were going after McConnell for solving the Democrats short term problem for them--but this isn't the first time they've been wrong about something. I think they're also mistrustful of McConnell going back to his actions under the Bush and Obama administrations, with TARP etc.--they should be wary of McConnell! But I think they're reading this one wrong.
To see things my way, just understand a couple of things:
1) The debt ceiling would have been raised by the Democrats whether the Republicans made voting on it easier or harder.
2) By making it so the Democrats could raise the debt ceiling without passing the BBB budget reconciliation bill, McConnell may have saved us from the Green New Deal and the biggest increase in socialist entitlement spending since the Great Society and maybe FDR's New Deal.
Sometimes, late in a football game, the best way to win is to take a safety.
https://www.mincoverage.com/post/why-taking-an-intentional-safety-can-increase-win-probability
One time, I was in a fantasy football league with Brian Westbrook as my running back. It was late in the game, and he broke through the defensive line for what should have been a clear touchdown. Instead of scoring, Westbrook took a knee on the one yard line. That was the right thing to do! If he'd scored a touchdown, the opposing team would have gotten the ball back, and by taking a knee, the Eagles could just take a knee and run out the clock. So he did the smart thing--and won the game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeRohiI1iwI
That's what McConnell just did.
Manchin and Sinema might sign on anyway. That could still happen. But they have far less incentive to do so now that the infrastructure bill they wanted has passed and the debt ceiling can no longer be held over their heads. You realize that the progressives were holding up the infrastructure bill because Manchin wouldn't pass the budget reconciliation bill, right? They were about to do the same thing with the debt ceiling. McConnell took AOC's hands off of McConnell's balls, and told her to go finger Pelosi instead. If the BBB bill fails, it will be partially due to that.
I screwed up and put two links in that post.
I don't know if anyone else can see it.
Your claim is that by separating the debt ceiling Manchin/sinema can now freely vote no on BBB. But to believe this means you agree with the narrative debts can't be paid without raising the ceiling, per your quote from Manchin. This is a false narrative Ken. Youre justifying a false excuse to justify raising the debt cap.
"But to believe this means you agree with the narrative debts can't be paid without raising the ceiling, per your quote from Manchin.
Is some Democrat proposing a bill to cut spending?
What are you saying here?
McConnell can't get anything passed without some Democrat's support--and to the best of my knowledge, no Democrat is proposing to cut spending. Even if one did--and it somehow passed the Senate--why would the progressive dominated House pass that spending cut? Why would President Biden sign off on that spending cut? HJe wants to spend trillions more.
We should only consider options that are possible, and Manchin + Sinema voting for the BBB budget reconciliation bill if the progressives made that the only way to raise the debt ceiling wasn't only possible. It was also probable. If McConnell had tried to stop the Democrats from voting to raise the debt ceiling in an independent bill, that's probably what would have happened last night.
A Democrat controlled Congress voting to cut spending in order to avoid raising the debt ceiling and Biden signing off on it was not and is not one of the possible outcomes. It might not be possible so long as Biden is in the White House, but it certainly isn't possible while the progressives dominate the House. In this sense, it's more like we're playing baseball rather than football. In football, you can score on defense. In baseball, you can't.
The Democrats controlling the House, the Senate, and the White House means that cutting spending below the level of the debt ceiling isn't possible. If McConnell had assumed it was, and tried to stop them from voting on the debt ceiling independently, the Democrats probably would have both raised the debt ceiling last night and passed the BBB budget reconciliation bill--with Manchin and Sinema on board for good measure.
What Democrat in the Senate, other than Manchin and Sinema, is amenable to cutting spending that way? The other Democrats in the Senate want to spend trillions more--not cut spending. Why should we pretend otherwise? Because that's what we want them to do?! Reality doesn't work that way. If you want to cut spending, you need the Republicans instead of AOC in control of the House.
Why do they have to propose a bill to cut spending? We know what happens in shut downs. Per constitution debts get paid first.
We need a bill to cut that spending because the spending that's going over the debt ceiling was funded by a bill that passed in Congress and was signed by the president. You don't just get to pretend that laws that were passed and signed don't exist. To stop funding that's been authorized by a bill in the past, either that authorization needs to expire or that spending cut needs to be passed by both chambers in the same form and signed by President Biden.
Putting socialist Democrats in charge of the government was the dumbest decision the American people have made in a very long time. Joe Biden getting into the White House was the worst thing to happen to libertarian capitalism since the Johnson administration, at least, and maybe going back to FDR.
These jokers around who pretend that it doesn't matter which party controls Congress are nuts--and they're also wrong. It matters a lot! Capitalism can't score a single run until the fucking socialists are done with their turn at bat. And libertarians who subjected us to this because of Trump's tweets and the belief that there are no major differences between the parties are either eating crow right now, apologizing profusely, living in denial, or, like sarcamic, going insane trying to rationalize it.
And by the way Ken. Whats to stop them from voting no on BBB and just increasing fy22 higher than they would have?
They can just shift their favored spending for a false no vote without worry of the debt cap.
Your3 entirely too naive on this topic.
I honestly don't understand what you're saying here.
Raising the debt ceiling makes it less likely that Manchin and Sinema will vote for the BBB budget reconciliation bill.
Do you or do you not understand that?
Neither Manchin nor Sinema want the BBB budget reconciliation bill passed--and it's for reasons that have nothing to do with the debt ceiling. Raising the debt ceiling hasn't been an impediment to any spending bill since the results of the Georgia runoff elections came in and the Democrats took control of the Senate. You see what Manchin said? He was always in favor of not defaulting on our debt.
Now that Manchin and Sinema can no longer be forced to choose between raising the debt ceiling and passing the BBB budget reconciliation bill, they are less likely to vote for the BBB budget reconciliation bill. If someone told you that the BBB budget reconciliation bill is more likely to pass now that the debt ceiling has been raised, that person is wrong.
IF IF IF Manchin and/or Sinema votes for the BBB budget reconciliation bill now, it'll be because of all the shit they take out of the bill and all the pork they put in it for Arizona and/or West Virginia--not because the debt ceiling was raised. Raising the debt ceiling was the easy part. As the Democrats demonstrated last night, they could have done it without McConnell's help anyway--or any Republican vote.
It just would have been a tedious pain in the ass with a lot of infighting. They's have gotten there in the end though. Raising the debt ceiling for all the funding that's already been approved is the one thing that all Democrats agree on--especially Manchin so he can get his infrastructure bill funded.
Cutting spending to get under the ceiling was never even under consideration--with the Democrats in control of the House, the Senate, and the White House because it's not a real possibility. Even Manchin is only complaining that we're spending too much with this new bill--not that we should cut spending.
Your entire thesis rests on the claim that the only proposed spending increases is BBB. That's the only way to justify your argument.
They have now opened up 2.5T in more spending. Other spending bills will push forward. BBB would not have passed even if it attached the debt ceiling. That is a false assertion.
The only actual fact here is the debt ceiling is increased.
Do they or do they not have more cap when passing fy22 budget now? BBB is not the only spending bill. Stop intrinsically linking the two. They were never linked.
"Your entire thesis rests on the claim that the only proposed spending increases is BBB. That's the only way to justify your argument."
Oh, there's plenty of ways to have more spending. But the spending in the BBB is fucking atrocious. Do you understand the difference between funding bridges that we don't need and creating whole new socialist entitlement programs?
One ends eventually, and the other doesn't ever end. One is expensive, the other is a socialist wealth redistribution scheme. There are good reasons to oppose all different kinds of spending. They're basically creating a socialist framework for the entire economy with the BBB that can never be undone.
Whatever Bill Clinton spent on pork that no one needed, that damage isn't hurting us anymore. The socialist shit FDR and Johnson did with the New Deal and the Great Society continues to spoil capitalism to this day--and the BBB is like the New Deal and the Great Society. And it will neve be undone.
And it will never be undone.
And it will never be undone.
And it will never be undone.
The only way to stop it is to prevent it from happening in the first place. We haven't seen a piece of legislation this awful egregious and permanent since Johnson's Great Society and FDR's New Deal, and stopping it from passing is the only issue that really matters at the moment. If they pass this, we will never get back to how capitalist America is today.
Did I mention that it will never be undone?
So, excuse me if it seems like I think this is the only bill that really matters, but that's because the second most important bill is relatively insignificant. The infrastructure bill sucks. Our great great great great great great grandchildren won't be suffering from the infrastructure bill though. The socialism of the BBB will never go away. It will be like trying to get rid of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the income tax. We can recover from everything else. We'll never get away from the socialism in the BBB as it stands now. The best we can do is not pass it. Voting the Democrats out after it passes will be too late.
Why wait for Hugo Chavez, Lenin, or Mao to take over--when we know what the consequences will be of them taking power beforehand?
The BBB is like that.
Waiting for it to happen until we fight back is bullshit. We need to kill every possible incentive that people like Manchin might have to support it now--before it's too late. Once it passes and gets signed by the President, it's too late.

Progressives don't care whether the facts they cite are true or false. Progressives don't care whether their thinking is rational or irrational. Progressive don't care whether they're right or wrong.
Progressives are just talking about how they feel--like we're their mothers or something. They're coming into an intellectual conversation talking about their emotions. Emotions are never wrong or right, and not caring whether they're wrong or right is the center of their stupidity.

This is Buttplug in a nutshell. For months he's been pretending that Covid spending was Trump's fault, that inflation isn't happening and that drilling is affected by a strong economy rather than permits and geologist reports.
I don't think it's because of his emotions though. I think it's as simple as he's paid to post them.

Never mind that it makes zero logical sense to accuse someone who believes in "both sides" of being a progressive, since progressives are clearly on only one side.
You're a progressive because you spout progressive talking points, constantly run cover for the Democrats and attack anyone who disagrees with DNC narratives.
But, but, his sword is double-edged, both sides, and he only swings it at the bad guys... how can he possibly be the villain?
"...I think it's as simple as he's paid to post them."
I'm convinced it's simply a matter of abysmal stupidity.
P.S. I maintain that IF IF IF someone is actually paying these progressive trolls, the people who oversee them are getting worse than nothing for their money.
If their purpose is to make Independently minded people think progressives are overwhelmingly ignorant and stupid, then the progressive trolls here are doing a great job--and their paymasters are getting their money's worth.
But why would their progressive paymasters shell out for that?
IF IF IF they're getting paid, I suspect it's just that whomever is paying them has a very low opinion of the commentariat. They look at the trolls they send here, and they know they're stupid--but they probably figure that we're incapable of critical thinking like the stupid trolls they send our way.
Has Palin's Buttplug ever been right about anything?!
I don't think I've ever seen him make a rational argument. I know every time I've looked at a link he's given, it's always said the opposite of what he claimed--he just doesn't seem to understand what he reads.
Act Blue and David Brock have openly admitted to paying people to comment on online message boards.
There is such a thing as bad publicity. If they're paying these trolls, the trolls are making progressives look incredibly stupid.
That's just here because libertarians are contrarian assholes. It works tickety-boo everywhere else.
The purpose isn't to actually convince anyone.
It's to:
1. Create an impression that a majority of the commenter's peers are politically Democrats. People don't like being the odd man out, and even if they don't come around, they may be hesitant to voice views that are counter to what they think the comment sections prevailing views are.
2. Publish talking points. Get them into peoples heads.
3. Shout down facts, opinions or concepts that reflect poorly on the Democratic Party or their narrative.
Trying to convince people isn't even on their menu.
This works well everywhere except with libertarians, most of whom are instinctively contrarian.
"This works well everywhere except with libertarians, most of whom are instinctively contrarian."
If they were the kind of people who knew that facts and logic insulate people from the effects of ignorance and stupidity, I guess they wouldn't be progressives.
Can’t wait for the rebuttal to include a cherry picked gas price. And maybe some futures expectation with gymnastics involved.
Anyone confident enough to guarantee that prices will be $x.xx lower in y months should be willing to reimburse the commentariat the difference should that not occur.
Notice he used a 2-year span to fake the inflation numbers, like using the last year of Trump's time in office to influence the economic data for his presidency.
It's certain he thought that cherry picking was 'clever', and that, oh, sarc or dee would buy that bullshit.
turd lies; don't forget it. turd always lies.
Standard oil was last trading barrels at ~$39 a barrel! See inflation is a myth
At the station closest to me, which is always within about 10 cents or so of the national average and thus a reasonably representative proxy, 87 very briefly got as high as $3.49, then dropped back down to $3.39, and it has remained right there at $3.39 for the last several weeks now.
I’m pretty sure that this pattern (or something very close to it) applies to the overwhelming majority of stations around the country, so yeah, everyone knows you’re completely full of shit, jackass. If the price of oil was really dropping that much, the price of gas would going down at the stations as well, because that’s generally how it fucking works.
Oil speculation has lately been driven by fears of them locking the economy down over the Necronomicon variant. It got choppy and wacky for a while. But the trend over the past year is clear--as the pandemic recedes, oil prices are going higher.
Meanwhile, everything else is going higher, too. The PPI is up. Domestic food prices are up. Core inflation is up. And why wouldn't it be--with all that spending? I guess he wants to pretend that inflation isn't ultimately driven by the money supply growing faster than the economy--because he wants more spending.
I might accuse him of confirmation bias writ large to the point of willful stupidity if it were someone else. I mean, I refuse to believe the truth because it contradicts my wishes is the very definition of willfully stupidity. But I'm not convinced he's ever been knowledgeable enough to know that the money supply growing faster than the real economy is the cause of generalized inflation in the first place.
watching AOC-level intellects try and spin a shit economy and inflation is like watching a cripple try to do gymnastics

Probably nobody was as big a proponent of Net Neutrality and government oversight of the internet as Mike Masnick over at Techdirt and probably nobody was as big a critic of Ajit Pai. Yet he couldn't see the disconnect between calling for government regulation of the internet and bitching about how the Ajit Pai was regulating the internet. If you're calling for the government to "do something" about a problem, what the hell makes you think you're the one who's going to decide what that "something" is or that you're going to be happy with the result? You got what you wanted, what are you bitching about?
An Open Internet is not "regulation" any more than Secularism is a religion. Agree though that the lack of NN has not been a problem - yet. It probably won't be either.
The danger of regulation comes from conservatives/progs who want to regulate Facebook and Google.
turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.

How about we split the difference and just ban corporatism? Ensure that 430 South Capitol Street is no longer able to ban people and censor speech through private sector proxies.
Would you be okay with that, Shriek?

"On a single Kentucky street, the tornado killed 7 children"
I must be hearing about it so much because it wasn't a BLM supporting domestic terrorist. I suppose anything that can be spun as "maybe climate change?!" gets more coverage than "black man murders women and children"
It was a red SUV the man behind the wheel was innocent
Hurricanes have a higher child mortality rate this week than covid. Shut it all down.
A QAnon supporter received a 28-month prison sentence for making death threats against Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Notice that the DNC-Politico article won't quote the supposed threats and doesn't elaborate on their nature. Neither does Reason.
Find it strange that Politico and a "libertarian" magazine like Reason are celebrating speech prosecutions? The judge gives the game away:
“The heated inflammatory rhetoric that brought the defendant to the district has not subsided,” the judge said. “The lie that the election was stolen and illegitimate is still being perpetrated. Indeed, it’s being amplified not only on social media, but on mainstream news outlets and…it’s become heresy for a member of the president’s—the former president’s party to say otherwise.”
"Because the hoi-polloi have the temerity to believe that their election was stolen, we're going to make an example of this guy".
For being advocates of the most "free and fair election in human history" they're sure acting like their covering up a coup.
Yeah, that's pretty fucked up coming from a judge. Why is he opining on the truth or falsehood of questions not relevant to the trial at hand?
One would prefer that we had systems in place to prevent predjudice against a defendant from playing a role in the application of justice.
Nothing, either, on how he pled guilty on a plea deal and the judge decided to ignore what was agreed to and enter a different sentence instead.
DO. NOT. ACCEPT. PLEA. DEALS. FROM. THE. FEDS.
Death threats are the point on the graph where believing in absurdities meets committing atrocities, where the freedom of one to swing a fist meets the nose of another.
Sorry, no dice on this one. The QAnonner needs to be in the same cell with all "mostly peaceful" Antifa/BLM protesters, and they all need to be cell-mates with Bubba or Tiny.
Except nobody will publish what the comments actually said, and even the prosecutor admitted that they were unrealistic hyperbole.
It really stinks Encog.
Twitch did a cracker jack job of eliminating users that post racist slurs.
Chris Wallace announces he is leaving Fox News, joining CNN+
Finally! Now that he’s over there he can join the rest of the crew over there and advocate for communism just like Don Lemon, who definitely is on the liberal plantation created by Jesse Jackson. I see this as a distinct plus as a Black, gay conservative in that now we can get back to the real issues— namely, how my muscles and juice fast protect me against Covid and how much blood from Jewish babies does HILLARY Clinton drink every morning to keep itself up and going. Much more important! Good riddance Chris Wallace! Take your questions about Trump and the Ching-Chong Wuhan virus to those commies like SE Cupp over at CNN.
GIT OFF THE GOP PLANTATION!

...and onto the DNC's one with the rest of your pals and paymasters.
Has Xhris Wallace disavowed white supremacists today?
If not, it must be because he supports them.
Does anyone else now get to see which comments are waiting moderation?
I see the statement, but not the comment.
Anyone else getting flipped up to the ad in the middle of reading or typing?
I see "your comment is awaiting moderation" everywhere
They don't seem to be moderating the spam though.
they're not even *my* comments.
Yeah, was seeing same. Other people's posts, content and all, "Still awaiting moderation". Gone now.
Another flaw in the fubar system.
"...House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) predictably said the Republican attack on net neutrality was an attack on democracy itself. (What isn't?)..."
The Jan 6 protests.
Take your blood pressure meds, then watch this one:

Dude has the prosecutor, his own attorney, the Judge and even the Bailiff conspire against him. They laugh as they steal $15,000 in bail and lock him up.
Small potatoes compared to some of the stories we cover.... But just a reminder that the government boot is petty as well as grandiose.
Just checking...I'm supposed to find death threats against judges or the government BAD, right?
Because I, you know, really am not doing that much these days.
Yeah.... Posting their banal evil here is probably irresponsible.... Like tossing a match into a room filled with gasoline soaked rags.
That's not what the video was about. It was about a guy who didn't plea out so the court falsified testimony to have him arrested
Death threats are idiotic and only create sympathy for the targets. And allow people to more easily paint all opposition as crazy, violent nutjobs.
That was absolutely disgusting, and the thing is that this happens hundreds of times a day across the US and Canada.
This is why I oppose the death penalty.
We need to create common-sense lawyer/prosecutor/judge control laws.
We need to create common-sense lawyer/prosecutor/judge control laws.
If a death row sentence gets overturned, the prosecutor takes the accused's place.
wouldn't it be lovely if the NFL simply gave up the ghost and said everyone can play or coach this weekend? Goodell could be a shining light for once in his stupid career
Otherwise, Goodell will leave fans deflated.
I'm a cheerleader for a two-minute warning on his tenure.
His wife unenthusiastically refers to their sex life as the two minute drill.
I'm a cheerleader for Ms. Skinner too.
Once again, Reason pulls shit out of their ass and think it makes sense. Of course speeds and shit go up- why the fuck wouldn't they?
That is not an argument in favor of repealing net neutrality. I think you'll sing a different tune once comcast charges more for non-xfinity bullshit. But hey- don't let your libertarian fever dreams die. I'm sure you'll take it up the ass and ask for more.
4 years later... it's going to go to heck any day now for sure.
Charge more for a better product?!!! How dare they!!!!! A Lamborghini should be the same price as a Toyota!!!!!
You do realize that the whole net neutrality thing was Netflix, right? I mean, they paid Obama 60 million dollars for it the day he left office. I know some people like to pretend, but that's all it was. At the time, Netflix had grown to be 50% of all network traffic, yet they were only having to pay for their back end connections in major network hubs... Which are comparatively cheap. Meanwhile, the rest of us were using Netflix on our mobile devices and crushing the last mile, which was built out to support web pages and maybe some highly compressed video and audio.
So Netflix was afraid that they were going to be throttled or blocked on mobile and older networks. So they paid off a bunch of politicians and created some fake grassroots organizations to push useful idiots into parroting their talking points.
In the interim, Netflix had more money than the Pope, so they were able to work out deals with mobile carriers to not only allow their traffic, but to offer free Netflix to their customers. They coordinated together to recompress the video in ways that would work with the network.
That is why you have not seen a giant push to institute net neutrality laws. Because they worked it out amongst themselves, and nobody needs big brother right now. But as soon as YouTube, Netflix and maybe one or two others decide that it is too easy to start up a competitor, look for a renewed push at network neutrality, with a slightly altered set of requirements that make it extremely difficult for competitors to these established giants to gain a toehold.
This. Netflix got a great deal from Comcast, and when that contract was up Comcast wanted tk charge them more, meanwhile all of the throttling that Netflix saw was done by cogent (not an isp) netflix knew that but the purpose was to commit lawfare against Comcast.
Net neutrality was a fix to a problem that didn't exist, and still doesn't exist.
"That is not an argument in favor of repealing net neutrality. I think you'll sing a different tune once comcast charges more for non-xfinity bullshit. But hey- don't let your libertarian fever dreams die. I'm sure you'll take it up the ass and ask for more."
...because God knows government mandates certainly do a lot better than the admittedly imperfect market.
If the government ran the internet, we'd still think dial up was amazingly fast.
Dan Bongino reacts by blasting Geraldo for "backstabbing" Trump.
That’s the spirit, Dan! Can I make a modest proposal to the GOP platform committee (which as a gay, Balck conservative I nominate myself to lead.)? Can we further acknowledge Donald Trump as the demigod that he truly is and build a statue to him across the plaza from FoxNews? I suggest we find out the architect for whoever built this… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansu_Hill_Grand_Monument
…And work backwards. Only it should have lasers and because of the unfortunate overexuberance of some New Yorkers for conservative politics and SEan Hannity be flame retardant?
dafuq is a gay Balck?
Are you trying to be an obl style parody?
No! I don’t know what I have to do to convince you that I’m not here to do anything that would go against the Trump agenda. I’m even posting under my real name, which you can look up.
I’m just a normal GOP conservative along the lines of Milo Yiannopoulos and Caitlyn Jenner. Why are people here so suspicious?
Why are people here so suspicious?
'Cause what you did right there was some real white man shit. Just sayin'.
Raskin continued, “And we are not communists as the gentlelady from Georgia suggested. That’s just the friends of the former president who you lionized like the dictator of North Korea who he loves, and Vladimir Putin, who said that the greatest tragedy of the 20th century was the collapse of the Soviet Union. So those are your friends. Don’t put them on our side.”

Raskin reminds Crazy Whore Greene that Donnie-boy actually loves communist leaders.
lionized lol
Buttplug became Joe McCarthy so slowly that I hardly noticed.
McCarthy didn’t have the internet to post links to child pornography.
J edgar hoover however...
J. Edgar Hoover’s Buttplug. He more than skirts the rules around here.
It was quite strange when Trump was bragging to Bill O'Reilly a couple days ago how well he gets along with the world's tyrants.
Not "I know how to talk to dictators" or "I know how to negotiate with dictators", but:
“I got along great with Putin. I got along great with President Xi of China. I got along great with Kim Jong Un of North Korea, and isn’t that good? Isn’t that better than having a nuclear war? He wrote me beautiful letters, wrote me beautiful letters. I call them love letters. And the press said ‘He’s saying…’ But they are, they’re love letters.”
Yeah, instead of negotiating like he did, he should've droned them. Right, Neocon Mike?
Epic trolling: "KJI, Xi, and Putin are my bitches."
Epic failing: "He said he wants to have sex with them!"
One President is giving them everything they wanted.
One did not.
The one you think was bad for getting along with them was the one not giving them all they wanted.
Weird.

A BLM rioter was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for throwing concrete and rocks at Police during the 5/30/2020 protest organized by woke Mayor Bill Peduto (after it turned into a riot, just as occurred in dozens of US cities the two preceding nights).
https://triblive.com/local/scott-man-gets-federal-prison-for-throwing-objects-at-officers-during-george-floyd-protests/
Have any other BLM/Antifa rioters been prosecuted by other US Attorneys?
Not sure, but a Jan 6 protester was sentenced to a similar time for wearing a funny hat.
Seems like they did not take throwing concrete at them for granite.
Yes, there have been a few.
Well, you asked "by other US Attorneys" I can't answer that. I don't know. But there have been a few indictments handed down for some of the most serious cases.
I've know two couples that consist of one Scandinavian and one Japanese. Their kids look just like Native Americans.
Four years ago, the "save the internet" pro-net neutrality crowd was focused on warning about apocalypse scenarios in which a handful of companies might develop monopoly power and leverage it to dictate the terms of what ideas can and can't be expressed online.
Now those same people are mostly looking into how we can go about expanding the extent to which the handful of companies that already had monopoly power will set the parameters as far as what kinds of ideas can and can't be expressed online.
Good thing Donald Trump came along and solved that problem by launching TRUTH Social.
Oh, well that makes this okay then:
Twitter to Penalize Users Who Claim Vaccinated People Can Spread Covid-19
Users just like those kooky conspiracy theorists at the CDC.
CDC report shows vaccinated people can spread COVID-19
Muh pRivAtE c0mpaNy, right Mike?
OMG! Trump gave the power back to "The People"!!!!
Heaven forbid screams the Nazi's.
