Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris Was Unpopular Before She Became Vice President. Nothing Seems To Have Changed.

Harris' attempts at evolving her political image away from being a law-and-order prosecutor have been disingenuous and unconvincing.

At Monday afternoon's signing ceremony for the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, Vice President Kamala Harris stepped up to the microphone to speak—just as someone else was being introduced.

"Please welcome Heather Kurtenbach," the White House's announcer said, calling up the union activist who joined Harris and President Joe Biden at center stage for the event.

Harris wasn't having it. "In a moment," she said, with a nervous chuckle.

Yes, it was nothing more than a brief, awkward moment during a series of forgettable speeches. But it was also fitting, given this week's news cycle about the apparent disharmony between Harris and the White House. "Key West Wing aides have largely thrown up their hands at" the vice president and her staff, CNN reported on Sunday. Harris' confidants, meanwhile, seem to believe she is being deliberately sidelined by the White House.

The palace intrigue should hardly be surprising. Pretty much all presidents and vice presidents have rocky moments in their relationships. Given the results of this month's elections in Virginia and elsewhere, coupled with ongoing economic inflation and polls showing Republicans gaining a huge lead in the early phases of next year's midterms, Democrats' fuses are understandably growing short. Like a baseball team mired in a losing streak, the White House needs someone to blame for the recent run of misfortune and the finger-pointing in the clubhouse is now spilling into the media.

Harris' biggest problem, however, isn't that some anonymous staffers in the White House are snarking about her to reporters. It's that polls show the vice president to be deeply unpopular with voters—even less popular than Biden, whose approval numbers have been underwater since August. A recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll found just 28 percent of voters approve of Harris. As Politico notes, even famously despised former Vice President Dick Cheney never saw his approval ratings tumble so low.

Even among Democrats, Harris lags. That same poll found that 63 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of Biden voters approve of Harris' handling of the job. By comparison, 83 percent of Democrats and 78 percent of Biden voters give a thumbs up to the president.

Those low approval ratings make Harris a convenient scapegoat for the White House and likely reflect some of the political and policy missteps Harris has taken during her first year as vice president. She was put in charge of handling the administration's diplomatic efforts with "Northern Triangle" countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras), which are where many of the refugees seeking to cross America's southern border are coming from. That's a tough assignment, to be sure, but Harris has bungled it.

Called in as a last-second surrogate to save Terry McAuliffe's doomed Virginia gubernatorial campaign, Harris delivered this thoroughly underwhelming moment that seems like a perfect metaphor for Democrats' current electoral malaise:

Kamala fails to fire up the crowd at a McAuliffe rally tonight in Virginia. pic.twitter.com/hL109sjaRH

— The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) October 29, 2021

None of them are singularly debilitating, but there's an undeniable pattern here. Harris' aides can complain all they want to CNN about how the White House is "consistently sending her out there on losing issues in wrong situations for her skill set," but they should consider the possibility that the real problem is that Harris seems ill-equipped for so many situations.

At a time when politics mostly just makes people angry, few politicians are genuinely well-liked. But being disliked isn't a political death sentence, either. Indeed, some politicians thrive in the role of the heel—perhaps none as well as former President Donald Trump. Others survive being unlikable because they hew to certain principles, a strategy that requires occasionally doing the unpopular thing.

Harris has neither of those options as a backstop.

Her flame-out during the presidential primaries suggests that she was never all that popular with Democrats to begin with. Her attempts to be more pugilistic ended in humiliation. Elsewhere, Harris' sloppy attempts to rewrite her biography to seem more hip—everything from possibly lying about listening to Snoop Dogg while she was in college to definitely lying about her history of opposing drug legalization—attest to an uncomfortable relationship between who Harris is and who she's trying to convince you she is.

As for principle, well, that's even a bigger joke. Harris is a cop and that won't change no matter how many times she tries to awkwardly mouth the buzzwords of the progressive youths. If you're the type of person who defends dirty cops, throws poor parents in jail when their kids miss school, or laughs at the idea of inmates being denied food and water, then you're probably never going to be believably woke.

Where does that leave the vice president? Harris is a law-and-order politician in a party that no longer has much room for cops and heavy-handed prosecutors (unless they're prosecuting the right people). Her attempts at evolving her image have been disingenuous and unconvincing. And now she's tethered to a sinking ship of a presidency, and she doesn't seem too interested in helping to bail—only in complaining that her feet are getting wet.

And, no, don't chalk up Harris' poor poll numbers or criticism of her political performance to sexism and racism. Of course, that might play a role in how some voters see the vice president, but there are plenty of more popular politicians out there who are racial minorities and/or women. Harris' popularity problems are her own.

"Perhaps the worst-kept secret in Washington is that tons of Democrats are terrified of the prospect of Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic Party presidential nominee at some point in the future," wrote liberal political blogger Matthew Yglesias in July.

The good news for Democrats is that Harris' time on the national political stage—from her flailing presidential primary campaign in 2019 through her current struggles—suggests they are in no danger of having Harris at the top of a presidential ticket anytime soon. That's good news for the rest of us, too.

"You going to get to see actual craters on the moon!"

And for that you need the scope at the naval observatory?

You need three things to see the craters on the moon:
      1. A clear night
      2. A good pair of binoculars or a cheap telescope (I built a 3" reflector back in the day)
      3. The moon.

      1. Bubba Jones   4 years ago

I have shitty vision and even I can see craters without binoculars.

        1. Zeb   4 years ago

I don't think you can. The features you see with naked eye are mostly mountains and volcanic plains.

          1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

You can see Tycho and Copernicus pretty well. You need binoculars to see all their detail, but the craters themselves are pretty visible.

Other than Harris herself, the only person who's happy she's VP is Obama.

    1. Bill Godshall   4 years ago

Nobody is happier that Harris is VP than Joe Biden.

If Biden had picked any other Democrat to be VP, Biden would no longer be President, as Democrats would have already removed him (by citing the 25th Amendment) or would have ordered him to resign (for personal or medical reasons).

I strongly suspect that most Democrats (and most Democrat politicians) wish that Harris wasn't VP, and don't want her to be the Democrat's nominee for President in 2024.

      1. Make Democrats Extinct   4 years ago

Judging by the 2020 primaries, she is wildly unpopular among democrats.

If Biden has to step down for health reasons - he could commit murder during the State of the Union address and Republicans wouldn't impeach him - Harris becomes President. Who would she pick as her VP? Not someone who would be more popular than her, killing her chances in 2024.
May I suggest Senator Hirono? Or Congressman Schiff?
That way she could count on the Secret Service still being willing to take a bullet for her.

The DNC refused to look at her primary performance with any level of sensible evaluation while rigging their primary process for the second election in a row, and now they are stuck with this awful, horrible person that anyone who isn't blinded by party loyalty can see for what she is a mile away with a blindfold on. She's basically a woman of color version of Hillary minus the political acumen and power connections; Hillary couldn't even beat a game show host moron, and they doubled down on that strategy. That fortification really paid off, reversed a 150 year trend and that 4 AM bump was the biggest percentage increase in American history... all for Joe and Kamala. Not Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Kennedy, Reagan or Obama, but Joe Biden. Remarkable.

Harris and her toadies need to understand that the only way Harris can impress people is by tackling tough jobs and doing something constructive about them. After all, she wants to be President. The President has to handle whatever crisis comes up, and whinging that it's not in her "skill set" does not constitute "handling" the crisis.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Complaining that you can't handle complex tasks given to you by your boss is indicative of the fact that you don't deserve consideration for his spot when he leaves. This is a woman who wanted Biden's job and is blatantly admitting now that she can't handle it.

Again, this is a woman who got where she is by ball-washing more powerful men, and happened to get in to politics after California turned indigo blue for the foreseeable future, so she's never really been challenged until the 2020 primaries.

Her career pattern emerged again when she bombed as a Presidential candidate, but Biden's handlers ended up picking her as VP for no discernable reason other than her plumbing and her skin color, or because the DNC owed Hillary a favor for bailing their finances out in 2016. Because there were other Democratic women that fit those very simple criteria who at least don't come off as insincere, lazy, and incompetent.

      1. Nardz   4 years ago

Kamala is Michelle's sock puppet, not Hillary's

        1. Nardz   4 years ago

  8. Commenter_XY   4 years ago

Let's be real. Heels Up Harris is a fucking joke as VP. She is clearly out of her depth, and Brain-Damaged Biden has no incentive to bail her ass out. She ain't blowing Joe like she blew Uptown Willie Brown.

I hope Kamala runs in 2024. Really, I do. So much that can be said about her, and her performance as VP.

I can't wait for the GOP to retake congress in 2022. Once they've removed Biden, and they surely will, Kamala will become presidentess. Her Hookership will crash The Party sooo hard it will be a sight to behold!

      1. Á àß äẞç ãþÇđ âÞ¢Đæ ǎB€Ðëf ảhf   4 years ago

I don't know if the GOP will actually impeach Biden or not. I don't know if I care one way or the other. But I do know that either one, Biden+2 years or Kamala, will be comedy gold, and even more so with a GOP Congress blocking their every move.

        1. Terry Anne Lieber (Don't Feed Tony)   4 years ago

It will be gold, just as it is (in a way). I believe they will impeach anyway. Most of the GOP voters would support it today. They will only want it more by this time next year. Hell, probably most of the populace would support it today too. Just look at the numbers and consider the fact that now the entire world admits that Biden is brain-dead. The jig is out already and they won't be able sweep this under the rug anymore...

          1. daveca   4 years ago

            "jig is out "

        2. Commenter_XY   4 years ago

If the GOP takes the House in 2022, impeachment should be on the docket. Brain-Damaged Biden is corrupt AF, and his drug addlepated son is a useless POS who is a security risk.

      2. Ragnarredbeard   4 years ago

I'd bet money that if the Republicans take both the House and Senate in 2022 they will not impeach Biden. A minimum of two reasons: 1) They think they can manipulate Biden, 2) Mitch McConnell has no spine and no balls.

        1. Terry Anne Lieber (Don't Feed Tony)   4 years ago

          1) Why would they manipulate Biden but not Kamala? What's the difference? If they can manipulate one, they can certainly manipulate the other.
          2) After what Ds did to Trump it stands to reason that impeachment will no be constantly par for the course ESPECIALLY if they can remove the POTUS too. Ds were satisfied with the PR stunt alone, Rs can do much more IF they retake both the H and S. And again, Kamala will be a much bigger calamity for Ds so it is in the GOP's interest to prompt the switcheroo.

      3. Fats of Fury   4 years ago

In 2024 we will be in double secret lockdown and Harris will be so popular she'll double Biden's vote tally.

It takes a unique kind of scumbag to be an effective prosecutor.

To truly, effectively deploy accusations of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, one needs at least two doctorates in pointless and useless subjects. It is known. And the degrees must be from Ivy League schools, no crappy rinky dink colleges. Kirkland can probably provide an extensive list of acceptable schools, it has many thoughts on the subject.

  11. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

It's very rare for a person to become seen as an effective leader as Vice President--it's a ceremonial position. It's like being the Queen of England. Americans don't respect the idle rich, and they don't respect powerless people with pretensions of power either. Being Vice President is setting yourself up for that. The most important thing you can do as Vice President is probably fund raising, and that isn't about to make your more popular with the American people either.

Here's a list of vice presidents since Nixon:

    Spiro Agnew
    Gerald Ford
    Nelson Rockefeller
    Walter Mondale
    George H. W. Bush
    Dan Quayle
    Al Gore
    Dick Cheney
    Joe Biden
    Mike Pence
    Kamala Harris

The only one who successfully ran for president and won was George H.W. Bush, and even he was subject to constant ridicule. What you get for being Vice President is that you get to be the default pick by the establishment in your party to be the nominee next time. But the American people are likely to see you as a laughing stock anyway. Blaming this on racism is ridiculous. Was it racism when the same thing happened to the last 7 out of 9 white men for the same reasons?

It should be noted that Kamala Harris was picked because of her sex and race. Biden committed himself to naming a woman as president in March of 2020, and during the Black Lives Matter protests, it became politically impossible for Biden to pick anyone who wasn't black. The short list of candidates Biden considered for Vice President were four black women.

    https://www.npr.org/2020/06/12/875000650/pressure-grows-on-joe-biden-to-pick-a-black-woman-as-his-running-mate

I suspect Biden picked Kamala Harris specifically because she was a cop loving bootlicker--and he knew he needed to appeal to swing voters in the Midwest to win. If Biden had picked someone who was in favor of defunding the police, he would have lost by a wide margin in swing states in 2020. In picking Kamala Harris, Biden couldn't be criticized by progressives for not picking a black woman, and he couldn't be hurt by her association with defunding the police--because she was a bootlicker.

Earning the respect of the American people is already a tough job, and being picked on the basis of your demographic characteristics--rather than your accomplishments--isn't likely to help in that regards--regardless of whether that is as it should be. Another Vice President would have have the same problems for the same reasons if he or she had been picked for being some other sex or some other race. If anything, I think it's being picked on the basis of her race--rather than her race itself--that makes most of her critics reluctant to embrace her.

If this were a private company, announcing to everyone in the company that you were planning to hire your new second in command, primarily on the basis of race and gender, before you hired her, that would be a great way to undermine her underlings confidence in her--before she even walked in the door. That might even be a matter for the Human Resources manager to handle. You should just say that you hired the best person for the job--full stop. Anyone who protests she was hired because of race or gender--in that case--would be exposing themselves as a bigot.

    1. daveca   4 years ago

"If this were a private company, announcing to everyone in the company that you were planning to hire your new second in command, primarily on the basis of race and gender, before you hired her, that would be a great way to undermine her underlings confidence"

Thats their agenda. Deliberately. Undermine, destroy.

      Nihilists the lot of them.

They cant win on merits or accomplishments so they Slash and Burn. The Low IQ approach.

And it resonates with low IQ voters.

    2. Sometimes a Great Notion   4 years ago

The only one who successfully ran for president and won was George H.W. Bush

And Joe Biden. And while maybe not the path the presidency it once was 2 out of 11 in a country of 150 million eligible people for the job is pretty good. And with Cheney, he was never meant to be a president in training but a bulwark against W's inexperience (same with Biden but c'est la vie).

Agree with the rest, especially the hobbling her by Biden announcing the "requirements" for the job. Then again she was hated by the American public before that; I think because she has the Hillary Clinton talent of pissing off everyone by trying to appeal to everyone.

      1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

        "And Joe Biden."

        Yeah.

"The only [other] one who successfully ran for president and won was George H.W. Bush"

        ----Ken Shultz

And that was mostly about the swiftest deep pandemic driven economic collapse in American history--and Biden still only took the presidency by an inch and half. More people lost their jobs over a shorter period of time than at any time in American history, and you wouldn't expect the incumbent to do well under those historically challenging conditions. When things go wrong, there is always a significant proportion of people who blame whomever is in charge--regardless of whether he's actually to blame.

      2. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

Harris will be the best positioned to raise money. She'll be the default nominee in a lot of the donors' minds. And in the early primaries, one of the biggest factors (besides who the union supports) is name recognition. People won't support you if they don't know the difference between a Buttigeig, a Beto, and a Yang. Half the American people probably can't tell you who the Vice President is, but she'll have more name recognition in the early primaries than the others.

The Vice President gets good name recognition, good exposure to the party's donors, and she's unlikely to win in the general election.

A recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll found just 28 percent of voters approve of Harris. As Politico notes, even famously despised former Vice President Dick Cheney never saw his approval ratings tumble so low.

Actually Cheney sunk to far worse levels during the Bush Economic Collapse of 2008:

Vice President Dick Cheney also leaves office amid negative perceptions, as his approval rating stands at just 13 percent. That matches his lowest approval since he assumed office.

Forty-four percent of Americans now view Cheney unfavorably, while 42 percent are undecided or haven't heard enough.

Looks like DC's left wing Mayor Bowser has responded to last week's Democrat trouncing in the VA elections by relaxing her mask mandate.
    https://www.newsmax.com/us/bowser-washington-dc-mask-mandate/2021/11/16/id/1044893/

Unfortunately for students, parents and common sense, Bowser is still requiring all K-12 students to wear masks all day at school.

Thats Communism! Force the will of a minority on the majority using Government power! And all done by people hiding behind Democracy which is the will of the Majority.

The root word and concept of Communism is COMMMUNITY!

      1. Utkonos   4 years ago

Then let’s use Communist sloganeering to counter them.

Her actual skill sets are not an appropriate topic among polite society. As to your second question….Fiscal restrain and “live and let live” come to mind—ya know, common sense in ordinary life but a potential death trap for the politicos (I think the author’s point is that they are shoals which can be navigated)

I ran across the CNN piece yesterday and immediately started mulling the 4d chess implications as to why, suddenly the press is noting something everyone has known for a very long time.

One of the things that I had guessed (and it wasn't my original thought) was that at some point in the Biden administration the Democrats would start a "whisper" campaign suggesting Biden is unfit to be president and by leveraging the Republicans who would immediately glom on to this, would have him removed as president.

But what I'm seeing seems to be a possible whisper campaign being leveled against Kamala. It seems that the Democrats believe that Joe will at least be able to serve out his four year term, but they don't want Kamala to be his replacement in the 2024 primary-- so this appears to be their attempt to sideline her now, rather than figure out what they're going to do in late 2022, early 2023.

They've vanquished us, and now feel free to squabble over the spoils.

    Calling it now...

Decision America 2024: Bruce Jenner (R) vs incumbent president Kamala Harris (D)

Joe Biden passed away in his sleep peacefully in August 2023. The White House doesn't admit he's dead for three months. After the news breaks, Donald Trump ridiculed him as a "wuss" and the "crypt keeper", but ironically died the next night from a heart attack while shouting at his lawyer.

During the campaign Republicans will flip flop to being pro-LGBTWTFBBQ while Democrats will flip flop to being pro-cop and anti-drug.

Hang on tight kids. It's going to be a hell of a ride. 寧為太平犬,不做亂世人. (tr. Better to be a dog of peaceful times than a man of troubled times.)

Was it misogyny and racism when she dropped out before the Iowa Caucus? Typically, the Vice President selection is considered much weaker than the President; which if that is the trend with Harris it is embarrassingly bad for her.

    1. daveca   4 years ago

She was chosen for " being a woman"

When your main qualification is based on "Stating the Obvious", you aint got nothing.

  36. wareagle   4 years ago

No shit. Dems summarily rejected her during the primaries. Not one delegate was pledged and she had to bail before being embarrassed in her home state. Then came the DNC, telling the sheep to line up behind Joe, and bowing to demands that his running mate be a minority woman.

It was not going to be Tulsi and Warren, well you know, though at least her campaign lasted a bit, leaving the one person the party's own voters had dismissed.

  37. Cronut   4 years ago

Biden and Harris are both throw aways. Their priority was congress, which they barely managed, and then the White House. They knew the fix was in, so it didn't matter who they ran. Their goal was to get a majority in both houses and ram thru their progressive nightmare agenda. They know they're not getting more than one term out of this and once the midterms pass, they're spent. Even Pelosi knows it and is retiring (allegedly). Why waste any good talent on a one term presidency?

  38. Ricport   4 years ago

The only reason why she’s VP is because she’s black and a woman. Biden basically said this when selecting his VP. Her only real credentials are screwing a married Democratic bigwig to gain her entre into CA politics; by utilizing the Dem machine to get into elected office, and then by being the right race and color at the right time. She’s stunningly, totally incompetent, and all those oily birds are finally coming home to roost.

    1. jack murphy   4 years ago

you are correct. her list of personal accomplishments is very short. her long political career is marked by patronage, the spoils system and her ability to pretend she cares. being black helped, being female helped and for an ugly fella like willie brown she's a "nice pull".

I guess not. The claim is "lacking context" according to Reuters.

In an article published by the Jamaica Globe, professor Donald Harris wrote: “My roots go back, within my lifetime, to my paternal grandmother Miss Chrishy (née Christiana Brown, descendant of Hamilton Brown who is on record as plantation and slave owner and founder of Brown’s Town),” a town in Jamaica.

  40. Reshufflex   4 years ago

Kamala the fraud. Fake laughter barely hiding bitterness. She tries to pass it off as some relaxed discernment but it’s refined duplicity.

Like any prog, she’s pimping for a nirvana that gives her an excuse to want to tear shit down. Preach social justice and make it shine as long as it comes with the statist’s imprimatur. Old boss meet the new boss.

And she needs to lose the martyr schtick. She’s not Rosa Parks and didn’t walk Selma. Hell, she’s not even Shirley Chisholm. Somebody needs to tell her that being black with a uterus might get you affirmative brownie points, but it doesn’t hide your demons.

None of this matters because when she loses the presidential election, it will be because of some wholly fabricated controversy about nothing, like emailz or windsurfing. The nature of the ratfuck is that there's no way to predict what it will be this far away from an election. So there's no point in speculating.

And there's no point in gaming anything either because the Democratic primary voters will do what they will do without any help from unnamed party establishment ghouls. The only thing you can count on is the corpse of Bernie Sanders running and his cult setting themselves up for four more years of depression and unhelpfulness.

Harris succeeded at Job No. 1 for any VP:
Make the other side think twice about trying to get rid of the President.

Job No. 2 is to hopefully add some votes in a key swing state. That wasn't needed this time around.

  51. CE   4 years ago

Harris is one of the few nationally known politicians with a lower approval rating than Biden. But the Dems' bench for 2024 isn't exactly All-Star caliber:

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/11/joe-biden-succession-drama-swallowing-kamala-harris-2024

If you're Biden, and your top Cabinet secretary is a guy who took most of the year off for parental leave, and you've torpedoed your VP with the border crisis tar ba.. albatross, your chances of getting replaced are shrinking by the week.

Sanders seems like he might be older than you are, and with an even more tenuous grip on reality.

Warren may be more disliked than even Harris. Booker? Klobuchar? Think Abbott or DeSantis are afraid of them?

How about fresh blood? Wow, Whitmer and Abrams! Really?

  52. DRM   4 years ago

Where does that leave the vice president? Harris is a law-and-order politician in a party that no longer has much room for cops and heavy-handed prosecutors (unless they're prosecuting the right people).

Is it true that there's little room for that? Or is it just that just a SALT-deduction-class/Twitter bubble? Back when the "Defund the police!" shouting was loudest, people in some of DCs poorest neighborhoods organized to denounce the idea, and Biden definitely ran away from it in his campaign.

If Harris were a bit brighter, she'd lean in on her record. There's a whole horde of urban minority voters who have no time for rich white "protesters", letting criminals out without even bail, and are upset at climbing homicide rates. It's not like, in the current Democratic Party, there's anyone else around to be the natural leader of that bloc of voters; she can run out and grab it.

So, take a trip to San Francisco and endorse the recall effort aimed at Chesa Boudin. Make a speech calling for a new version of Bill Clinton's 100,000 cops bill on the Senate floor. Be an Angry Black Woman demanding safe streets for Black children.

And if the White House or the SALTocrats don't like it, she can tell 'em to go to hell. It's not like they can fire her, the media will cover the Vice-President, and for the next year she's the critical tie-breaking vote in the Senate anyway.

    1. NoVaNick   4 years ago

Angry Black Woman? Problem here is that Kamala isn’t really Black (with a capital B) She’s half Indian, half Jamaican-so no credibility outside of the white prog world.

    2. NOYB2   4 years ago

Harris knows nothing about urban minority voters and she isn't good enough of a politician even to fake interest.

Harris is a entitled airhead from a privileged, progressive background. She wants accolades and titles and nice dresses and fancy dinner parties, and she is going to stand up for the interests of her peers, namely privileged entitled progressive elites.
