Federal Regulators Greenlight Trading of Bitcoin-Linked Securities, Delighting Investors and Infuriating Cryptocurrency Critics
Plus: Cuba violates the rights of peaceful protesters, New Zealand leads the world in zoning reform, and more...

Federal regulators are allowing new bitcoin-tied securities onto the market, marking a major milestone for the cryptocurrency industry. On Tuesday, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) started trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
The launch of this new fund—which will allow investors to purchase a package of bitcoin futures contracts—saw the price of the cryptocurrency rise 4 percent to a near all-time high of $64,000. Cryptocurrency news site Decrypt reports that five other Bitcoin ETFs have applications pending with the SEC. Provided the agency doesn't explicitly reject them, all of them could be trading by early November.
Longtime bitcoin boosters described the launch of the first bitcoin ETF as an unqualified success that only portends bigger and better things for the digital currency.
"The ETF approval is a watershed moment for the industry," said Brock Pierce, of the semi-defunct Bitcoin Foundation, in a statement to CNN Business. "Today begins an era…and serves as further validation of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies across the country and on a global basis."
Other cryptocurrency investors were a little more measured in their reactions.
Bitcoin's rise to close to its record price is "related to the growing belief as the trading day goes on that this is going to be considered a successful launch," said Stephane Ouellette of FRNT Financial Inc., a crypto-focused capital-markets platform, to Bloomberg. "Given the amount of avenues retail investors already have to participate in BTC, clearly the U.S.-based ETFs are nonetheless satisfying some kind of latent, even if niche, demand."
Others were far less excited about the launch. SEC Chair Gary Gensler, a Biden appointee and bitcoin critic, cautioned investors on CNBC that cryptocurrency was "still highly speculative asset class" and that the new ETF "still has that same aspect of volatility and speculation."
Some progressive groups, meanwhile, are fuming that Gensler allowed the Proshares ETF at all.
"Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have already sucked an insane amount of money from the real economy," Bart Naylor, financial policy advocate at the consumer group Public Citizen told Politico. "Enabling more gambling under the banner of the SEC debases what's supposed to be the gold standard of world securities markets oversight."
These dueling reactions highlight the awkward position bitcoin finds itself in at the present moment. Its wider acceptance among institutional investors and individuals alike is also fueling demands for tougher, tighter regulation.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.) had characteristically demanded that the SEC "step up to address [cryptocurrency's] regulatory gap."
Some Republicans, meanwhile, are positioning themselves as defenders of Bitcoin. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R–Wyo.) told Reason earlier this year that "it provides great freedom to people who are living in hyperinflation or repressive governments."

Communist Cuba's treatment of dissident demonstrators suggests it's not the workers' paradise many had believed. A new report from Human Rights Watch found that the Cuban government "has systematically engaged in arbitrary detention, ill-treatment of detainees, and abuse-ridden criminal prosecutions in response to overwhelmingly peaceful anti-government protests in July 2021."
From the report:
Human Rights Watch has documented human rights abuses including arbitrary detentions, ill-treatment in detention, and abusive criminal proceedings against 130 victims in 13 of Cuba's 15 provinces, as well as in Isle of Youth, a small Cuban island considered a "special municipality." Between July and October Human Rights Watch interviewed by phone more than 150 people, including activists, victims, their relatives, journalists, and lawyers with direct knowledge of the cases; reviewed case files, fines levied against protesters, press reports and publications by Cuban rights groups; and corroborated photos and videos.
Officials involved in the abuses include members of the intelligence services, known in Cuba as "state security;" the military; the national police; and the special national brigade of the Interior Ministry, known as "black berets." Government-organized groups of civilians known as "rapid response brigades" were also involved in several beatings. Prosecutors and judges, who lack independence from the government, enabled and took part in abusive criminal proceedings.

Its COVID policies might leave something to be desired in the liberty department, but New Zealand is now leading the world in free market housing reform. Yesterday, New Zealand's Labour-led government, with the support of the conservative opposition, introduced a new bill that would require larger "Tier 1" cities in the country to allow three-story, three-unit homes on all residential land citywide, reports Stuff. Another bill also introduced yesterday would allow even denser housing in select urban areas.
Efforts to legalize these "missing middle" housing options in response to high housing costs have been gaining momentum here in the U.S. Earlier this year, the California Legislature legalized duplexes on most residential land across the state. Oregon passed a similar bill ending single-family-only zoning in 2019.
Individual cities have adopted their own liberalizing reforms, although their effects have been muted by the retention of a lot of red tape and regulation.
Let's hope New Zealand can avoid those mistakes.

Cuba violates the rights of peaceful protesters...
It's almost as though it doesn't recognize those rights.
Look at you! You just went full commie. Spreading Human Rights Watch propaganda. They said this about the most popular Republican:
"U.S. credibility on human rights wrecked under Trump, group says in reporting worldwide abuses"
Hey Strudel, are you going to lie and tell us that you have never heard of Greenwald again, rather than actually deal with arguments he is making? Or have you figured out a new way to transparently beclown yourself with naked partisanship?
Ok, I just looked him up. Are you happy now? He writes for The Guardian or something? There's just so many people out there. It's hard to keep up. I'm just a simple hardworking blue collar American.
Hey dummy. Overt posted a post from you discussing Greenwald prior in yesterday's roundup. Damn youre an idiot.
if you want to lose weight you have to read this first.... http://www.Fitapp1.com

And yet with this minimal knowledge of him, you’re convinced he’s a Russian agent. Maybe you should rethink your standards for who is a Russian agent? Or stop lying.
Oh shit, I think Gearwald is gay and he adopted kids. Is that legal? Louisiana law says it's a crime to be gay.
And he deflects from being caught lying. Jeff, is that you?
Do you think you are being clever? Or that anyone gives a fuck if Greenwald is gay?
Shitlord does.
His strawman version of what a libertarian/conservative believes does.
Yeah, this is definitely someone new running the Stroozle sock. The last guy was slicker and had a completely different tone.
This reminds me of two years ago when they switched Tony's. The first one went to college, but the new one probably hasn't graduated high school. The first Tony could also actually debate and earned some grudging respect, but Tony II just shitposts.
Not saying that the first Stroozle wasn't a shitposter. Just that he wasn't as retarded about it.
Not everyone who disagrees with you is a sock. I know this is hard for you to believe, but you’re outnumbered.
More Americans and Canadians aren’t Trump worshippers than those who are Trump worshippers.
asshole flag!
He's a sock, just like you Shrike.
In fact, for all I know you're running him now. Same low info trolls.
I can’t control what others post.
Is that why you feel the need to lie about me? Because I’m “low info?”
You’re the one spouting discredited Qanon bs all the time.
QAnon doesn't exist, Shrike. It's a bogeyman the the NYT and WaPo use to scare Wine Moms so that they don't bolt from the DNC barn.
But Biden definitely is a pedo, just like you.
There you go lying about me. Any evidence I’m a pedo?
What about all the Q anon signs and clothing at Trump rallies?
Part of Qanon bs is claiming it’s a hoax.
I was mostly referring to your bs election lies. Give it up. Your BFF Trump lost.
"Part of Qanon bs is claiming it’s a hoax"
Lol, any idea how crazy and paranoid you sound, Shrike? Worse than any supposed spooky-ooky QAnon bug-a-boo.
As for you being a pedo, posting deep-web child porn links here, and immediately getting your old sock banned and an entire comment section deleted is pretty good proof.
I’m not Shrike or a sock of anyone.
I can’t control what others post.
You’re an awful human being.
So all those Qanon followers at Trump and anti-mask/vax rallies are fake?
All you do is lie and claim anyone who doesn’t follow the party line of you and the other far righties on here is a paid troll or a sock.
You mean these guys?
https://twitter.com/johncardillo/status/1439318496857530386
Yeah, I'm guessing that they're actually as "QAnon" as you, Shrike you creepy pedo.
And even if QAnon was fucking real I still don't understand what your point about it is.
That politics is full of pedos? Pretty sure Epstein proved that, and that youtube link above of Biden fondling kids at photo ops cements it.
Or maybe you're shitting your pants over the fact that 65% of Americans think the election was messed with, and want to call that "QAnon"? If so, for a guy who spent 5 years squealing that the Kremlin had taken control of the US through clandestine sexual and financial blackmail over the President -- you'd be an enormous fucking hypocrite.
Real question. Aren't you sick of yourself? Do you ever look in the mirror and say "There's a guy who does nothing but gaslight and lie for one of the evilest political parties on earth."? If I were you and did what you do I would have eaten a bullet by now out of sheer revulsion, Shrike.
Oh, and what happened to your KAR sock?
Did you finally get banned for posting death threats?
Fucking antisemitic lunatic.
Please tell me where you got that 65% from?
So one anecdotal picture of Feds disproves Qanon? You can’t be that obtuse.
When did I bitch about Russia?
I can’t control what PEOPLE WHO ARENT ME post. Jesus fucking christ.
I changed my name because I was sick of people asking “kill any rednecks?” It’s the same account.
Criticizing Israel isn’t anti Semitic. If anything conflating Israel with Judiasim is. Most Jews don’t live in Israel. Many inside and outside of Israel criticize their government like I did. The other thing you cited was me criticizing Mormons for being anti-Semitic which is fucking stupid. Calling out anti-semitism makes me an anti-Semite? You’re not that stupid. You’re just a lying troll. A lonley, sad man stuck in rural shithole BC.
Also it’s pretty obvious I’m not trying to hide since it’s a play on my old name.
Jesus Christ every other fucking comment from you is “he’s a sock,” or “he’s a fifty center.” When not doing that you just lie.
Fucking scumbag.

Greenwald is trash. I honestly think he’s in league with Putin on some level."
You knew enough about him in March to determine he was "in league with Putin". Now you insist you don't know who he is.
When were you lying? When you supposedly knew enough to call him a russian agent, or when you said you had never heard of him? Or is it both?
No, you got caught lying.
Classic low watt proggie. Cant even keep his disingenuous arguments straight from day to day and got caught blatantly lying.
You are in perfect company with Jeff, Tony and all
How long was the bus you rode to school?
The one you watched go by while you were munching dirt?
Poor TDS victim.
Shocked to say this. But you're actually getting dumber.
Friend I'm just a simple blue collar family man. You kinda hurt my feelings.
I think you're more the bottom of the act blue barrel.
Yes, you're certainly "simple", but a "simpleton pile of lefty shit" is a far better description.
If you were blue collar you'd be on a job at 10 am,, too busy to write lies. The economy sucks, and lower income families need to make money because the winter is going to be harsh. But, you are a soft-handed troll and a dimwit.
He wears blue pajamas when he shitposts.

Federal regulators are allowing new bitcoin-tied securities onto the market...
Uh-oh.
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have already sucked an insane amount of money from the real economy...
Get your ones and zeroes off his lawn.
Chain letters were popular back in the day once too.
It dawns on me that the many horrible things promised for my breaking all those chains just might be the Biden administration.
BTC's cap is just over $1T.
How many dollars will we print in 2021? 2025? 2030?
I'm not sure what this means.
Like... if I bought Euros would that be sucking my money away from the real economy? If I bought Gamestop? Is my savings account sucking money away from the real economy?
Does this dude think that people who bought btc at some point would just have spent that money instantly rather than saving it until it was time to buy something? I mean, it used to be a way to trade online. A friend bought a bitcoin because he was going to buy pot on silk road, just to be part of it, but chickened out. He spent the money on a pizza instead (it was $15-20 a bitcoin then). I suppose these days he could have put a down payment on a tesla with a single BTC.
How is this different than buying... a traveler's check? Or a CD at the .0004% interest they pay these days?
A new report from Human Rights Watch found that the Cuban government "has systematically engaged in arbitrary detention, ill-treatment of detainees, and abuse-ridden criminal prosecutions in response to overwhelmingly peaceful anti-government protests in July 2021."
Broad brush them all insurrectionists and you're fine.
It’s ok when that happens here because Orange Man Bad.

I was about to say that it doesn't sound much different from our regime's treatment of political prisoners.
Oh, yeah, abuse like ordering a special organic diet. I'm sure the Cubans totally do that.
“They feed you good in jail, so no big deal.”
Mike is a hack.
This is the exact argument that people on the right were making about Git'mo detainees back in 2004. But no one for a second believes that he would have been making those arguments.
She’s a squawking bird named Dee, and should be treated as such.
COVID-19 cases in Florida are plummeting. Why the media and people like white Mike are no longer screaming red states. Turns out seasonality has always been a thing.

Great news for Biden because he gets blamed when unvaxxed Republicans die. It's a strange world.
Can you provide the exact numbers of unvaxxed REPUBLICANS who have died?
Heck, you can even ballpark that number, Sullum.
That would be a fun project for a book report!
Shitlord expects us to believe he's capable of reading.
More died under Biden than Trump.
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
If you're going to make up statistics, they should at least be somewhat believable.
#BidenShutDownTheVirusLikeHePromised
Good. I mean fuck there was a vaccine.
Re read what he said dummy.
Omg Jesse, I'm sorta embarrassed for you.
Reread what he said. Mouth it if you have to.
He read just fine, but as a prog he sees dead people as an opportunity to exert more government power.
Also, he should be blamed for unvaxxed minorities, but nobody really cares about them anyway. In this climate, we only care about vaccinating white people to save this nation.
White power bro. Texas Republicans get it:

Look, Strudel is deflecting again.
Seriously, Strudel, do you ever get tired of this? You come on the site, say something stupid, get made an idiot, run back to Dem Underground to find something else stupid to say, and then repeat. Do you really think ANYBODY reading this site fails to see this transparent pattern? Even when the people on the left respond to you, it is half hearted pity.
You look like a clown, Strudel. And even worse, you fuck up the comment threads by constantly trying to change the subject.
You need to see this video:
Every Republican who hides behind critical race theory hysteria needs to listen to this testimony

You need to fuck off and die, asshole.
Hey look, you changed the subject again. Somehow you seem to think that is actually winning an argument, when in fact it makes you look weak. It is the rhetorical equivalent of saying, "I'm not a nerd...your mom is a nerd!"
How can you possibly think this dodgy behavior is playing well?
That, and ad hominem, is its entire repertoire.
LOL! Not even White MIke would dare post from Kos. Exposes you too much. #TrollBetter
I almost feel like that was so deliberate as to tip us in on the joke. Is he just another OBL?
Seems like whoever runs the KARen sock took over strudel.
It’s SARen now and this is my only account
Just calling it like it looks. This administration doesn't care if minorities get vaccinated. And it doesn't mind Trump's "Remain In Mexico" policy. A policy that I was assured meant its supporters were racist.
What else am I supposed to think about you if you voted for a racist?
Need me to show your posts from last year sullum?
Yeah you go do that. Sounds like a good use of your time.
Lol. It is sad how leftists have no shame at being hypocrites. As said yesterday... you do everyone a service exposing the left.
Blue collar independent here friend. Not sure why you're so hostile?
Add lying to the trait most cherished by the left.
Are you vaccinated?
Does an argument depend on vaccination status?
"Blue collar independent here friend."
Stupid sumbitch can't spell:
"Steaming pile of lefty shit"
Yep just muted Los. He thinks he's funny but is really just a retarded tool
Still has less to do with seasonality than with vaccinations. No one on the planet has ever seriously argued that outdoor contagiousness is as high as indoor. CDC is now tracking cases (probably unreliable) and deaths (probably pretty reliable) by vaccination status.
For late Aug early Sep (week 35)
Age-adjusted cases /100,000 people:
Unvax - 666
Janssen - 150
Pfizer - 126
Moderna - 87
Age-adjusted deaths/100,000 people
Unvax - 9.14
Janssen - 1.70
Pfizer - 0.88
Moderna - 0.47
I'm actually not shocked to see you pushing vaccination status matters more than age. You've been supporting authoritarian overreach here for 2 years now.
Unlike you, I can actually drill down thru this same data to find the, eg, death rates by age AND vax status
For 80+ year olds - death rate/100,000 peeps
Unvax - 54.9
Vax - 9.50
For 50-64 year olds - death rate/100,000 peeps
Unvax - 11.33
Vax - 0.53
For 30-49 year olds - death rate/100,000 peeps
Unvax - 2.67
Vax - 0.07
OK, for those numbers, vaccination reduces risk slightly more than being 20 years younger, for over 80s. But they are both ~5x difference in risk.
But so what? Age is still a really big factor. Getting the vaccine is a good idea, particularly if you are old.
Yes age matters. But until we find the fountain of youth or a time machine, the vaccine is the only thing that can reduce risk as if one is 20+ years younger. Ignoring the vaccine (and death and perhaps taxes) - everyone will be one year older next year.
So age itself really doesn't matter does it since ain't nothing that can change about that. Focusing on age is simply a different way of saying 'Nothing's happening here. Move along now.'
I don't disagree with any of your factual statements there. But still don't agree with the conclusion that age doesn't matter. Of course it does. It matters hugely in any risk/benefit calculation regarding vaccines or what sorts of social situations to expose yourself to.
On an individual level I completely agree. Age is one of the unchangeable givens of a person's situation.
At an aggregate level - meaning the level at which all politics/ideology is discussed, talking about age is most often simply a rationale for ignoring everything outside nursing homes.
No matter what data you look at, age matters more than any other factor. Followed by obesity.
Reason actually did an article on this. Did you miss it?
“Age adjusted”
Sounds like something you can count on.
No. And you know this is full of shit because the seasonality theorists have predicted virus activity since LAST SUMMER.
Hint: The winter wave rolls over the whole country.
So what? It is totally freaking obvious and useless information. If people are huddled indoors the virus is more contagious than if people are spread out outdoors. This is a virus that is generally transmitted via respiratory means. You think that is some unique insight from your conspiracy world??
That has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not someone should get a vaccine. That's all just the usual fucking flimflam that the usual lying assholes and idiots try to use to pretend they know what they're talking about.
Stuff your PANIC flag up your ass, stick first, chicken little.
If people are huddled indoors the virus is more contagious than if people are spread out outdoors.
That has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not someone should get a vaccine.
Sorry, Jeffy, you get 4 Pinocchio's for calling people lying assholes and idiots while contradicting yourself.
I got COVID. My vaccinated wife got it within the week. When vaccinated people are indoors with sick people, they will get sick. The vaccine does not prevent transmission any more than cloth masks. Call it anecdotal all you want. It is conformational evidence of the findings of multiple studies and data analyses.
Please post the link to Joe Friday's favorite study that had 72 subjects if you want to look like even more of a douchebag apologist.
The idea that the vaccine is helpful for the young and healthy is ridiculous. It is outrageous to suggest it for children. They are better off getting it, getting over it, and having the much stronger natural resistance. You are trying to Science! away something that is clearly not an existential threat. Mother Nature is disappointed in you.
When vaccinated people are indoors with sick people, they will get sick. The vaccine does not prevent transmission any more than cloth masks.
NO VACCINE ON EARTH PREVENTS TRANSMISSION OR HAS EVER PREVENTED TRANSMISSION. Vaccines only provide a prior experience with some element of the disease so that the immune system has the opportunity to ramp up faster if/when one is exposed to the disease itself later.
The idea that the vaccine is helpful for the young and healthy is ridiculous. It is outrageous to suggest it for children.
I'm the one who has posted actual data of vaccines and age and disease outcome. You haven't - and all your ilk does is resist actual information if it doesn't fit your preconceptions. Further - YOU are the one who is proposing vaccination decisions based purely on age (in that comment itself) but on the basis of no data at all. I haven't proposed one damn thing re whether an individual or group should get a vaccine. I have strongly implied that such a decision should be based on information/data - even if one is uncomfortable with the information/data. I would even go so far as to say that decisions to vax kids should be based on actual knowledge/data. For example - there are a couple dozen states where obesity rates among KIDS age 10-17 ranges from 15-25% - and no state where it is under 10%. But apparently you think it is 'outrageous' to even suggest the disease might cause problems among them.
NO VACCINE ON EARTH PREVENTS TRANSMISSION OR HAS EVER PREVENTED TRANSMISSION.
lololololololololololollo
Yeah, Jeffy apparently missed the last two months that the talking heads have absolutely been saying that the protection conferred by the vaccine prevents transmission.
Jeffy, you are here to conflate and confuse. It's what you do again and again. You are throwing out shitloads of numbers that don't confirm or refute anything being said.
Fat kids, skinny kids, kids that climb on rocks, tough kids, sissy kids, even kids with chicken pox are not being killed by COVID.
57,760 kids have been admitted to hospital for covid treatment - since August 1 of this year. I'm very glad they are able to leave through the front door rather than a coffin. But stop fucking pretending that they are simply going to hospital to get lollipops so everything can be ignored. Compare hospitalizations to the bad flu 2017/8 season:
57,760 hospitalizations in the last 10 weeks for covid
43,386 hospitalizations for the entire 2017/8 year for flu
57,760 kids have been admitted to hospital for covid treatment
Bullshit. My kids were 'admitted to the hospital' at least 3 times for dehydration from flu. 2 months ago, I watched a little girl with asthma get admitted to the hospital even though she was breathing fine at the time, because COVID.
You do know that hospitals make money when patients are admitted and the 'public health experts' have people terrified that
Baba YagaCOVID is going to eat their children, right? And you do know that you can't visit a pediatrician's office with active COVID, right?Conflate and confuse. Conflate and confuse. Conflate and confuse.
This is precisely what drives me nuts about these statistics.
What point do you think you are proving here:
For 30-49 year olds – death rate/100,000 peeps
Unvax – 2.67
Vax – 0.07
Because I'll tell you what it proves to me: That we should stop badgering anyone under 50 to get vaccinated. The vehicular death rate among males from 15 - 64 is around 20 per 100,000- nearly ten times higher than being unvaccinated from covid. The idea that people should spend any time worried about vaccinating (unless they have some sort of other risk factor) is pretty absurd, and the fact that you obsess over such tiny numbers is even more absurd.
I'm sorry....but are you attempting to use logic and reason here at Emote!. Yo, you know better. 🙂
That rate is a WEEKLY rate not an annual rate
Then the rate not really useful is it? On one week the risk to unvaccinated is 2.9/100k on others it is .41/100k.
Over the period of 3/2020 - 10/2020 there have been 40,800 COVID deaths in this age range (Population 85MM), which puts your 16 month death rate right around 26 - 30 per 100k for unvaxxed people. Again, roughly the same risk from driving or diabetes.
And that assumes that the covid death rate will continue at the same rate, despite the fact that many among the unvaccinated have natural immunity, and many of those who have died had comorbidities which is not an inexhaustible supply.
"3/2020 – 10/2020" Should be 3/2020 - 10/2021, of course.
Over the period of 3/2020 – 10/2020 there have been 40,800 COVID deaths in this age range (Population 85MM), which puts your 16 month death rate right around 26 – 30 per 100k for unvaxxed people. Again, roughly the same risk from driving or diabetes.
Assuming that roughly the same % of that population has been exposed to the virus v exposed to driving v has diabetes.
"Assuming that roughly the same % of that population has been exposed to the virus v exposed to driving v has diabetes."
It wasn't "N Deaths per 100,000 Exposed". It was "N Deaths per total population". If you want to start slicing and dicing your numbers based on "how many were at risk" then you probably know that your numbers won't stay the same. (What is the per-capita death rate of unvaccinated females with healthy body weights?)
All of our statistics have the same denominator- number of people in the population at that age group- so all of them are comparable. Fewer will probably die from COVID than die from heart disease, vaccinated or not.
But I have realized this is your MO. I will hand it to you that you are reasonably well acquainted with the data. But you are an ideologue. As soon as the data you offered fails to prove your point, you are off searching for some other data. You are not a critical thinker- you will never change your mind based on a review of the data. You will just try to find some shitty, Reuters article summarizing a non-peer-reviewed study of 50 kids in australia to prove your point.
If you are going to look for data to prove your points anyways, you should just spend the time figuring out what your points are. This is why getting some moral clarity will help you.
So what Elvis said is “totally freaking obvious”
AND comes from his conspiracy world?
By that fucked up logic, whatever conspiracy it is must be true.
If it's obvious information, why hasn't Fauci figured it out?
Holy shit we've gone from 'the virus isn't seasonal, it's about rules' to 'of course the virus is seasonal'.
Disgusting.
Because you were pushing the entire narrative of "ha ha red states are dying because of vaccination status" when it was driven by seasonality dummy.
You have done nothing but lie since the start. Still hoping for 3-4 million dead?
How weird that it happened exactly like the seasonality theorists told you that it would. Maybe we should start listening to those people instead of the 'experts' who keep telling us it's all about the rules and how well we follow them.
FFS. I've been saying it will be seasonal since before there was a single fatality here in the US (and only a dozen confirmed cases). eg here in late Feb 2020 -
Of course it hasn’t hit here. It hasn’t even hit China outside Hubei province like seasonal flu – yet at least. It may still hit hard in China this season but they are now making all the data up so we’ll never know until the peasants pick up pitchforks. It won’t hit the US until next fall/winter. But anyone like you who thinks it will just look like regular flu when it does hit will be gobsmacked.
You new-found 'seasonality theorists' were still completely ignoring the disease because the 'important news' to you bots was that Trump was being impeached.
And the important news to you was a disease slightly mare harmful than the flu.
Stuff your PANIC flag up your ass, stick first, chicken little.
So since seasonality trumps anything we do, what exactly are we accomplishing with covid rules in the middle of summer?
See my response to Jeffy below this. He has managed to shift the argument so that he is defending the opposite of what he originally posted.
Still has less to do with seasonality than with vaccinations.
What a douche.
Seasonality doesn't trump anything we do. The only 'covid rules' that I've ever talked about have to do with medical/ICU/etc capacity. Seasonality may help us anticipate when those problems will most likely appear. But yelling 'seasonality lalalalalala' doesn't really do anything to deal with the ICU capacity problems when they actually do hit.
Backpedal. Backpedal. Backpedal. Conflate and confuse. Conflate and confuse.

Freeze prices? Why not just lower them? That should rake in the votes.
Look how well it worked in Venezuela.
Food prices were too high. Chavez lowered them. A lot. So much that farmers couldn't pay for new seed, but that was OK because the government just imported it paying with oil when farmers stopped planting.
It all worked out great. Venezuela is a paradise now, a land of plenty.
Right?

Hot on the heels of CRT, schools are set to introduce Media Literacy classes where teachers tell students what media is acceptable. No more do they teach independent critique. Now they teach you want to listen to.

Shame, because actual media literacy, such as teaching kids to watch videos of incidents instead of taking a reporters word for what happened, would be super useful. But that kind of thing would undermine authoritarians.
I look forward to the introduction of the 2 minutes hate.
The Daily Show has been supplying 22 minutes of hate for years.

I liked John Stewart on the show. Stewart was not contemptuous and usually just let people make fools of themselves. Noah is everything that Orwell envisioned. That kind of politicized shame comedy is the reason I always despised the Pervert formerly known as Al Franken.
I was originally going to make a comment about Last Week Tonight, but that show is such a dumpster fire, I figured most people don't know it exists. I occasionally watch it just to preview what the Twatters will be sharting themselves over.

That is Mike insisting that he “would never look to Rolling Stone” for news, after spreading their bogus ivermectin story only days earlier. Consider that: He didn’t apologize. He didn’t even try to ignore his mistake. He brazenly tried to dunk on Rolling Stone to make himself look like an arbiter of truth.
The pathological narcissism required to disrespect the truth and readers so heavily should make him ashamed. It won't though, so I advise others in the thread to avoid engaging with someone that argues in such bad faith.

Nice self-own Dee.
IME, they don't teach undergrad liberal arts college students to look for primary sources, or how to evaluate them. I'd be surprised to see lower level students doing it, these days.
I remember when I was in school, they spent a week or two in English class one year on identifying logical fallacies in advertisements. I would be surprised if they still teach that.
They should be fired on this alone. Not because they shouldn't be allowed to advance CRT, but because a teacher trying to take on Youtube, Twitter, TikTok, Discord, Parler, etc., etc. is like a cripple trying to take down Mayweather. No one that stupid should be educating others.

The 'Thrill' of Fascism: Explaining the Brutality, Hatred and Powerful Appeal of the Radical Right
A recent report published by the UK-based Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right listed 2,185 separate protest events – everything from demonstrations and petitions to brawls and firebomb attacks – staged by far right groups throughout the United Kingdom in the decade between 2009 and 2019.
Characterized by nationalism, xenophobia, and authoritarianism, far right movements are an all too common feature of twenty-first century societies.

One of the biggest stories going has been Emperor Xi's efforts to transform the Chinese economy. Over recent months, he's launched an assault against Chinese consumer technology companies, purposely popped China's real estate bubble, and shut down much of China's coal fired power grid. The war on coal, in particular, has had dramatic consequences. Factories are shutting down for lack of power, whole cities are dealing with blackouts, etc., etc. Today, we finally see reports that Emperor Xi is changing course.
"China is pulling out the stops to ease its worst power crunch in two decades, reversing course on earlier ambitions to curb coal use as it sets new policies to revive production and loosen imports of the electricity-generating fuel. As winter looms, the nation’s top economic planner this week . . . has ordered all coal mines to operate at full capacity even during holidays, issued approvals for new mines and ordered major coal production bases in north and northwestern China to lower prices by 100 yuan a metric ton from Tuesday."
https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-takes-the-brakes-off-coal-production-to-tackle-power-shortage-11634727835?
Those of you who are worried about whether the Democrats will fix the upcoming midterms should get your heads around the implications of China, a country that doesn't hold elections, 1) being obsessed with public opinion, and 2) an emperor reversing course in response to the negative consequences of his own bad policy.
In a freer society with freer markets, the kinds of problems China is experiencing with its power grid could have been avoided. If China were democratic and held elections, the party's fear of losing power because of policy induced blackouts might have deterred them from implementing this policy, as well. Even without democracy or free markets, however, market forces themselves are inescapable, and the consequences of ignoring them were too much for even Emperor Xi to maintain his policies.
If Joe Biden and the progressives get their way with the economy, the consequences will be negative and devastating, and the policies that make that happen will be changed or repealed because of it eventually. Our real objective as libertarian capitalists is to encourage people to avoid the negative consequences of authoritarian and socialist policies before we suffer them, but sooner or later, reality will assert itself anyway. Sometimes it takes a long, long time--like it did with the drug war--but the negative consequences will continue until the policies are changed.
Mao and Lenin changed course when market forces had their way with their big plans to transform their societies into communist utopias. Maduro was forced to abandon the socialist policies that were starving the people of Venezuela out of the country. Emperor Xi is changing course on coal because reality and market forces have made the political, economic, and social costs of his preferred policy on coal too high.
And when the American people suffer the consequences of Joe Biden's and the progressives' environmental policies, one way or another, those policies will be abandoned, eventually, too. The question is how long it will take after the negative consequences kick in or whether we can avoid them entirely by preventing the progressives from getting their way. Our warnings were unheeded, and the progressives have political power, but the negative consequences of ignoring market forces are inescapable.
Twenty years ago, the US emitted twice as much carbon dioxide (from burning fossil fuels) as China.
During the past twenty years, as carbon dioxide emissions were cut by half in the US (due to concerns about climate change), China has doubled its emissions, and now emits twice as much as the US.
As such, any rational discussion of reducing climate change should focus on China (not the US). But of course, almost none of the many Green activists (including environmentalists, left wing media propagandists, Biden and other Democrats) who have insisted that global warming is an emergency (for more than 20 years) has criticized China's growing emissions, China's policies that have increased emissions, or China's ongoing refusal to even pledge to reduce emission until after 2030 (when China will have a much larger economy and military than the US).
If the environmentalist truly desired to reduce global carbon emissions, all of their reports and press releases would criticize China (instead of the US and our energy industry).
The reason carbon emissions have been falling since around 2007 is almost entirely because Americans are buying smaller cars with better mileage and, mostly, because of the fracking revolution. Natural gas displaced coal because it's less labor intensive to get out of the ground than coal and because natural gas is cheaper to transport in a pipeline than it is to load it up on trains. The benefit to carbon emissions was almost coincidental--natural gas releases 40% less carbon than coal to create the same amount of energy. So, as utilities converted to cheaper natural gas, carbon dioxide emissions continued to fall.
In regards to China's coal production plants, India is also a big issue. If you look at the map I've linked below, set the slide over to the right, and it shows all the coal plants that both China and India currently have under construction. Long story short, they have more coal plants under construction than the United States could possibly eliminate. Our sacrifices will be inconsequential, but I believe that makes it a good thing in religious minds of progressive ideologues. Forced sacrifice makes them feel like they're part of something bigger than themselves. It gives their lives meaning. It isn't about actually solving any problem.
Natural gas was supplanting coal anyway by market forces--because natural gas was cheaper.
https://www.carbonbrief.org/mapped-worlds-coal-power-plants
Anyone who wishes to "solve" CO2 emissions and does not support nuclear power is not being honest about "solving" CO2 emissions.
The only solutions they want to hear about involve sacrifice.
The solution to global warming is Sevo sacrificing his standard of living, and if he doesn't want to make those sacrifices willingly, then then forcing Sevo to sacrifice his standard of living is the whole purpose of government, in the progressive mind, anyway.
Agree totally....nuclear power is a must to reduce CO2 emissions.
And by the way, the US transition to Natural Gas is *exactly* what happened to Europe in the late '90s and early '00s. As Eastern Europe came out of the soviet era, many of those countries as well as some in the west, switched to natural gas economies. Europe knew this transition would lower their emissions, which is why they so readily signed on to the Kyoto Treaty.
Now today, as the US goes through the same transition, the same suspects are claiming that it doesn't count because it is natural gas or whatever.
Doesn't count, since no one needs to wear a hair-shirt.
I guess ordering coal mines to operate over holidays might help, but approvals for new mines won't have any effects for years. And ordering the mines to lower coal cost is going to have the exact opposite effect as intended. Even in communist China. You would have thought they learned something from their previous problems with power generation (electricity producers are not allowed to pass on costs to consumers, by law):
You don't think mines will shut down for 'maintenance and safety' periods when the coal prices are lowered? And if you send the army in, yeah, forced labor is always so much more effective than people working voluntarily. Not.
Xi is fully reembracing central planning.
It appears to be a power thing. He launched an offensive against any company that tried to go public in the United States because he fears the influence of American investors (and American regulators). He wants to be the only authority that these companies answer to.
He's also trying to get away from China being an export economy because he fears the influence of American consumers. If Chinese companies can't do what he tells them to because they're afraid of agitating American consumers, then he wants them to cut off American consumers. This really came to a head over American textile companies that won't source any cotton or other products from Xinjiang for fear of a boycott over using political prisoners--real or otherwise. He wants factories in Xinjiang to normalize the reeducated population, but he can't get companies to move there!
Part of his war on the online world, and Chinese social media, according to some of Xi's comments, were inspired by Donald Trump being kicked off of social media. His comments suggested that if social media in the United States had become so powerful that they could shut down the speech of the President of the United States, then he doesn't want social media companies to become large and powerful in China.
He's showing up in a Mao suit and giving highly ideological speeches that are reminiscent of Mao. He thinks market forces are the enemy of his authoritarianism--and he's right. Market forces and capitalism undermine authoritarianism. They significantly inhibit the ability of a ruler to dictate terms to the world. The Kims in North Korea could ignore market forces and condemn whole provinces to starvation without fear of losing power. Xi doesn't want that outcome, but he wants that kind of freedom.
In the meantime, his big plan for coal just got its ass kicked by market forces.
P.S. American progressives are the same way. They hate market forces because they can't really control them--at least not without suffering the negative consequences of doing so. And they hate that.
Ken...Now why do you suppose Dictator Xi has ordered all coal plants to max their energy production?
Hint: Warships and amphibian forces use oil. Lots of it.
Communist China is gearing up to invade Taiwan.
That's a reasonable explanation. The coming winter is another one. They can't have that kind of power outage in the winter.

After last year, how can we tell whether or not a protest the media calls peaceful actually was peaceful?
Once the Spartans decided to enslave the helots, all their other choices were made for them. Why were they afraid to send more than a few hundred troops outside of Sparta? Why were they so militaristic? Why were they so authoritarian? Why were they so totalitarian? Why were they so reflexively hostile to any dissent? a big part of the answer to all those questions had to do with their fear of the helots. They always had to worry about the helots revolting.
It's the same way with communist dictatorships. Once you've decided to have a single party system and inflict your will on your people, it's like all your other choices are made for you. You certainly can't tolerate dissent. We're seeing the same kind of behavior in the USA under the progressives. The progressives are censoring social media like never before; they're turning the intelligence services against parents at school boarding meetings. They're even making show trials of the Capitol riot.
Once the U.S. government became a single party state under the progressives--with the intent to inflict their ideology on the American people using the coercive power of government, it's like all their other choices were made for them.

I still don't get the twisting of libertarian panties over residential property zoning. If people voluntarily group together and establish rules for development in a defined area, why shouldn't they expect that contract to be supported? And why should a new owner, let alone outsiders (including government), have the right to negate that contract?
Because it is put in place without the consent of all property owners affected.
I suppose if you buy a property that is already zoned for residential only, you need to accept that or find something else. But if zoning changes what you can do with a property you already own, then you have had something taken.
The libertarian reasoning is that zoning is government imposing artificial limits on what property owners can do with their property. The Libertarian reasoning is that it's an obstacle to the leftist agenda, hence local zoning bad, federal zoning good.
In general when you get to the most local of levels, Zoning may not be sufficiently different than an HOA. I personally feel that HOAs are an effective way to govern a locality. My neighborhood is under 7 square miles, with an HOA and then sub-hoa's for condos and apartments within the overall one. This system works pretty well, because I can bail out relatively easily while still staying within 10 miles of here. Nearby there are areas without HOAs and you can tell which ones they are as soon as you leave the enforced conformity of my neighborhood (for better and worse).
The problem with most "local" zoning laws are that they go far beyond this- often extending to large cities or even states. And at this point, you get into larger and larger situations of a large majority forcing decisions on a slightly smaller- but still large- minority.
The better system is to encourage private HOAs at micro-levels which allow much more specific governance, and greater ease for bailing out to other HOAs.

"The In-N-Out hamburger chain is sizzling mad after the city of San Francisco shut down its indoor dining for refusing to check customers' vaccination status, as is required by a local mandate.
[...]
The company's Fisherman's Wharf location — its only one in San Francisco — was temporarily shut by the Department of Public Health on October 14. Authorities said the burger chain refused to bar clients who couldn't show proof of vaccination to dine indoors, as required by a city mandate that took effect August 20.
More cities are rolling out vaccination mandates for restaurants and other businesses as the pandemic continues, including New York, New Orleans and San Francisco. That puts the onus on restaurant owners to check patrons' vaccination status, a task that has prompted some fast food locations to simply shut their indoor seating due to staffing and safety issues, CNBC reported earlier this month.

In-N-Out ignored repeated warnings to enforce the vaccination rule, the department said, calling the mandate a matter of public health to keep COVID-19 from spreading.

Every. Single. Business. Should do this. Cowards stand back and watch as democracy dies.
Agree....Just say No to being a vax cop.
Seems like Reason doesn't consider it newsworthy to reveal that Southwest Airlines rescinded its vaccine mandate for employees (after the company falsely claimed that weather, not its vaccine mandate, was the reason why it cancelled >1,000 flights last week).

Local story.
Is that really walking it back? Seems like they're still requiring vaccines, just not firing anyone that's waiting for an exemption.
Or they're just trying to come up with ways to delay or avoid having to enforce the mandate, while also avoiding having to say they're not going to enforce the mandate at all.
There's nothing libertarian about resisting a medical procedure.
"Centrist Democrats Won’t Let Biden Crack Down on Tax Cheats"

"Perhaps most amazingly of all, even his plan to crack down on wealthy tax cheats is hanging on for dear life in Congress..."

Yes, spying on most everybody with a bank account is 'cracking down on tax cheats'.
Stalin would have been pleased to have such an obedient press without needing threats.
It is cracking down on tax cheats. It's cracking down on those scum who work for cash on the side, and don't report the income. Like landscapers and nannies and house cleaners. Those cheating scumbags need to pay their FAIR SHARE.

Goddam it. Wrong place.
finally, some good news
"human rights abuses including arbitrary detentions, ill-treatment in detention, and abusive criminal proceedings against 130 victims"
Came here to say that the last time this happened, Reason studiously ignored it as hard as they possibly could. But it looks like everyone else beat me to it.
I guess the Democrats get a special deal that isn't extended to the Cuban communists yet.

turd lies. It’s what turd does. If turd is typing, turd is lying.
turd is a pathological liar, and an ignoramus besides; far too stupid to understand that he is lying, and too stupid to realize everyone else knows he’s lying.
If turd posts numbers, they are either outright lies or cherry-picked such as to be worthless.

One wonders if making it easier to fire teachers could be used to improve their actual teaching as well.
How about something like this for "easier"?
At the end of the school year, the school holds a secret ballot by teacher's students and their parents. "Y" for continuation, "N" for firing, each parent's vote counts double, abstentions not counted. Teacher must get 2/3 "Y" to be back next year.
just get rid of public schools entirely. problem solved.
>>SEC Chair Gary Gensler, a Biden appointee and bitcoin critic
we kill what we don't understand.
Apparently the Biden administration is touting the appointment of the first female four-star admiral across all the uniformed armed forces. The person so honored is Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine. Levine is transgender and biologically male. First off, the rank seems to be honorary and in an obscure service which I expect most people are not aware even exists. Touting someone as a first who has received a rank this rather than someone who has worked their way up the ranks seems cheap. The fact that "female" is a term associated with sex, and Levine is male is another example the Biden Administration's substancelessness and pandering.
And they wonder why people get pissed about this- the first female four star admiral of the obscure service is actually a dude. So now the first ACTUAL woman admiral of whatever gets second billing to a mentally ill dude in a dress.
Also white... Lololol
