With Ports Clogged, Some Retailers Are Looking for Alternative Supply Chains

With ports clogged and supply chains snarled in advance of the holiday shopping season, some major U.S. retailers are taking unprecedented steps to get goods onto store shelves. That includes chartering their own cargo ships to import goods.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Walmart, Target, Costco, and Home Depot are among the major retailers to adopt the "if you want something done right, do it yourself" approach to importing goods. Worker shortages and COVID-19 protocols have slowed trans-Pacific shipping considerably—it now takes about 80 days to transport items from Asia to the U.S., about twice as long as it did before the pandemic, the Journal reports.
While some politicians are quick to blame the global system of trade for the ongoing supply chain issues America is experiencing, it's clear that many of the bottlenecks are domestic issues. For example, major ports in Europe and Asia operate around the clock, but American ports run at about 60 percent capacity because they close at night and on Sundays. Even when dozens of ships are waiting to be unloaded, inflexible union rules that govern dockworkers' and truckers' hours make it difficult to meet swelling demand.
By chartering smaller, private ships to carry their goods, retailers like Walmart are hoping to bypass the backlogs by landing at smaller ports up and down the east coast. That will cost more money—and those costs will be passed onto consumers—but that's better than running out of inventory during the Christmas rush. Home Depot, for example, is relying on chartered ships to deliver only a small percentage of its overall inventory with a focus on high-demand items like plumbing supplies, power tools, holiday decor, and heaters, the Journal reports.
Getting goods onshore is only half the battle. There are plenty of other bottlenecks to be navigated, like a 25-mile freight train backup that occurred at a major shipping facility outside Chicago earlier this year. At the port in Savannah, Georgia, The New York Times reports that workers are "running out of places to put things" as they unload ships, snarling both ground- and sea-based transportation.
Frustratingly, it isn't at all clear how long it will take to resolve what The Atlantic's Derek Thompson has deemed "the Everything Shortage":
The coronavirus pandemic has snarled global supply chains in several ways. Pandemic checks sent hundreds of billions of dollars to cabin-fevered Americans during a fallow period in the service sector. A lot of that cash has flowed to hard goods, especially home goods such as furniture and home-improvement materials. Many of these materials have to be imported from or travel through East Asia. But that region is dealing with the Delta variant, which has been considerably more deadly than previous iterations of the virus. Delta has caused several shutdowns at semiconductor factories across Asia just as demand for cars and electronics has started to pick up. As a result, these stops along the supply chain are slowing down at the very moment when Americans are demanding that they work in overdrive.

It's the second Monday of October, which means it's time to celebrate…America's most confusing quasi-national holiday. President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Friday declaring October 11 to be Indigenous Peoples Day, which means the federal government will join dozens of cities and states in honoring the contributions of Native Americans today. Of course, federal workers will have the day off because October 11 is Columbus Day, at least according to the Office of Personnel Management.
Which is it? Why not…neither? Christopher Columbus is no hero—or, at least, he's not an American hero. Italian-American communities should be free to celebrate his legacy however they want, of course, but elevating him to the level of having his own federal holiday has always seemed more than a little weird. We force George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to share, but Columbus gets his own?
And while Native Americans have been undeniably given short shrift throughout American history, co-opting Columbus Day as a way to recognize the accomplishments of Native Americans is always going to be at least a little bit awkward—and hardly makes up for centuries of mistreatment by the United States.
Creating new federal holidays isn't a bad idea—Juneteenth, for example—and surely there is some other date or dates on the calendar that could become Indigenous Peoples Day (or weekend?) instead. And anyone upset about dropping Columbus from the rotation should look up the origins of the holiday: President Benjamin Harrison declared the first Columbus Day in an attempt to end violent discrimination against Italian immigrants. Federal holidays always have a political angle. But the only thing being accomplished by the current messiness is the creation of more grist for the culture war, which is the last thing America needs.
The federal bureaucrats should have to work today. National unity demands it.

The Biden administration is considering an executive order that would include new regulations for cryptocurrencies and the appointment of a "crypto czar."
Bloomberg reports:
The proposed directive would charge federal agencies to study and offer recommendations on relevant areas of crypto—touching on financial regulation, economic innovation and national security, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing plans that are still under consideration.
The initiative will also aim to coordinate agencies' work on digital currencies throughout the executive branch, the people said. The plan would push departments that have given scant attention to crypto to focus on it.

I have said this before and will say it again- the "Supply Chain Problems" are a perfect vignette into how we get massive government.
People don't like change. But change is constant. People see temporary fluctuations in the market as "Failure" and want to jump in and stop it.
Everyone looks at the disruption and claims they know how to properly plan this complex eco-system. Folks on the left claiming "This is why the profit motive doesn't work, it causes companies to only support the haves while the have-nots miss out." And folks on the right screaming, "This is why the profit motive doesn't work, it created the Just in Time supply chains that have failed us- when we should have manufacturing in the country!"
Given the amount of disruption leveled on the country by stupid government mandates, at any other time in history we'd be starving in the cold. But instead our biggest problem is STILL death due to obesity in this country.

Starting that same company back up is another matter entirely; even the most basic business needs goods from other businesses, so they must await the functioning of their suppliers (see my post at 10:40).
Now take a business, producing complex equipment at the far end of the supply chain, and watch that simple 'shut down' take months to years to correct.
This is not a 'crisis'; this is the perfectly predictable result of on more attempt at planning an economy, in this case claiming to be an effort to contain a bug which would have caused far, far less damage than the 'planning' will end up causing.

The 'S-P' mortgages were a product of government actions, attempting to 'desegregate' the housing market.

This is what happens when you flood ANY market with free money, as the government had been doing to housing since about 1998. By keeping interest rates low, it was increasingly hard to make money simply by servicing debt. At a certain point you have more money than good risks to lend it to. So you start taking on more and more risky investments. This happened everywhere in the country- from Freddie to Countrywide.

To recap: You pulled an article from 2011- 3 years after the meltdown- to suggest that this was the private market causing the melt down.
Fannie and Freddie had all sorts of bad debt on their books. They knew what kind of debt it was, because it was all disclosed as shown in my article above. Everyone knew that it was risky debt. However they, like the fully private market, thought they could hedge these risks by selling derivatives as an insurance policy. The problem for them, like all the other companies out there, was that those derivatives could not protect them from a massive pop in the housing bubble.
Liberals, and liberals pretending to be libertarians in some bizarre concern troll dance that only fool themselves, always focus on the selling of bad debt instruments, but the ROOT ROOT cause was the housing bubble. That housing bubble was caused by the Federal Government shoving TOO much money into the economy, keeping interest rates low, giving preferential tax treatment to loans, and encouraging a "Lend to everyone" strategy. Banks would have been unwilling to lend to bad risks if they had to service mortgages, but unfortunately GSEs were there to absolve them of these bad ideas and they did it by continuously loosening the definition of what made loans conforming.

FNMA and FMC didn't originate mortgage loans. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the market works.
Fannie Mae does not originate or provide mortgages to borrowers. But it does purchase and guarantee them through the secondary mortgage market. In fact, it's one of two of the largest purchasers of mortgages on the secondary market. The other is its sibling, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, or Freddie Mac, another government-sponsored enterprise created by Congress.

I have no affinity to the banks that blew up- or for the GSEs. They were participating in the market with their own free will and blew up. But individual businesses and their leaders fail all the time. The catastrophic meltdown in '07 was caused by a bubble. And that bubble was created by our government's easy money policies. That pumped up the bubble, and the Government's implied support of the GSEs allowed them to federalize the risk that the government was creating.

I do wonder why more of it isn't diverting to Mexico, e.g., Lazaro Cardenas, and being rail-shipped from there. My first guess would be added customs and the like, but if NAFTA takes care of that, then perhaps it's just a lack of infrastructure investment. Portland isn't great for shipping stuff in. The city is quite a ways inland. No way PDX could handle the uptick in traffic.
And for the record the vast majority of truckers are not represented by unions. Their working hours are regulated by the federal government. But even that has little to do with port backups. If the ports were open drivers would work nights.
And for all the complaints in that article about there not being enough truckers, I can state from personal experience that the rates they're paying to have cargo moved have gone down about 25% over the last 4 to 6 months. And if there was money to be made doing drop and hooks on cargo racks, the guy that runs the company I'm working for would have us doing it.

To get a job at the ports you need to be a part of the Longshoreman's Union. This is more exclusive than a Country Club. Generally you need to have family already in the Union, or you work for years as a "casual dock worker"- which is an exercise in frustration. You essentially show up in the morning at the dock-hall, and they hand out jobs to all the union members. If there is work left over, you might get something. But right now, there just is not enough TIME in the day on the unloading equipment.
In china the loading and unloading and is controlled by computers using hand held scanners the Unions are not allowing that, they still use clip boards, this takes far longer to load and unload.

I think some retailer might be able to leverage Buy Local marketing - but not a big/existing player.
I unload trucks at Walmart and it never fails to amuse me that Yankee Candles are made in Vietnam and imported.

The other day, I said that the US should unambiguously say it will not defend Taiwan in case of an attack from China. I have zero confidence that we will get ANY competent performance from our Navy after seeing our military's performance in Afghanistan. It is far better that we let China suspect they can destroy our carrier groups than to really put ourselves in a position where they have to do it to achieve their goals.
Further, by refusing to support Taiwan, it clears the table for other allies in the Pacific. China is a problem for the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Australia (among others) to figure out. The quicker we stop giving them an excuse to not deal with the problem, the better.

The idea that Columbus proved the world is round is just stupid - everybody knew the world was round and it had a circumference of about 25,000 miles, the ancient Greeks had figured that out. Columbus argued that the circumference was about 8,000 miles and that's why nobody was willing to finance his voyage, they knew he was an idiot.
Knowing and proving are two different things.
The Greeks had PROVEN it over two thousand years earlier, measuring the difference in the angle of the sun between Alexandria and Syene. What did Columbus actually prove? That there was a small island on the other side of the Atlantic ocean...that proves nothing. An empirical proof that you could head in one direction and wind up back at the same point again wouldn't be given for another 30 years when Magellan circumnavigated the planet.
I thing Columbus is an important historical figure for proving to Europe that there was a land mass ripe for conquest and ultimately de-emphasizing the mid east for years. But those are political changes rather than scientific advancement.

But their "miles" like 30% bigger than European miles, so he didn't realize he was shortchanging the size of the earth by a significant amount. There's this thing called common carrier obligations, and they arise from monopolistic like behavior. If the longshoremen's union controls a handful of ports on the west coast, they've all but monopolized trade between the United States and Asia. I'm not arguing that the union should be broken up, just like it isn't always best to break up any monopoly.
Longshoremen have freedom of association. It's just that the results of their choice to collude has given rise to common carrier obligations. Discriminating against customers based on the time of day they arrive may constitute a breach of those obligations--which require them to take all comers at similar prices without discrimination.
Incidentally, it should be noted that common carrier obligations probably also arise when the four or five players that dominate 98% of the social media market start colluding, too. It probably isn't appropriate for them to discriminate against customers on an arbitrary basis either--for the same reasons. If you don't want to be obligated to carry content, don't collude to deprive other people of their rights.
Donald Trump may not have a right to use any port he wants for free, but he has a right to use a port, and if the longshoremen are colluding to deprive him of his right to use a port, then an obligation arises for them to treat Trump and everyone else the same without discrimination, and the government may have a legitimate responsibility to protect Trump's right to use a port.
