With ports clogged and supply chains snarled in advance of the holiday shopping season, some major U.S. retailers are taking unprecedented steps to get goods onto store shelves. That includes chartering their own cargo ships to import goods.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Walmart, Target, Costco, and Home Depot are among the major retailers to adopt the "if you want something done right, do it yourself" approach to importing goods. Worker shortages and COVID-19 protocols have slowed trans-Pacific shipping considerably—it now takes about 80 days to transport items from Asia to the U.S., about twice as long as it did before the pandemic, the Journal reports.

While some politicians are quick to blame the global system of trade for the ongoing supply chain issues America is experiencing, it's clear that many of the bottlenecks are domestic issues. For example, major ports in Europe and Asia operate around the clock, but American ports run at about 60 percent capacity because they close at night and on Sundays. Even when dozens of ships are waiting to be unloaded, inflexible union rules that govern dockworkers' and truckers' hours make it difficult to meet swelling demand.

By chartering smaller, private ships to carry their goods, retailers like Walmart are hoping to bypass the backlogs by landing at smaller ports up and down the east coast. That will cost more money—and those costs will be passed onto consumers—but that's better than running out of inventory during the Christmas rush. Home Depot, for example, is relying on chartered ships to deliver only a small percentage of its overall inventory with a focus on high-demand items like plumbing supplies, power tools, holiday decor, and heaters, the Journal reports.

Getting goods onshore is only half the battle. There are plenty of other bottlenecks to be navigated, like a 25-mile freight train backup that occurred at a major shipping facility outside Chicago earlier this year. At the port in Savannah, Georgia, The New York Times reports that workers are "running out of places to put things" as they unload ships, snarling both ground- and sea-based transportation.

Frustratingly, it isn't at all clear how long it will take to resolve what The Atlantic's Derek Thompson has deemed "the Everything Shortage":

The coronavirus pandemic has snarled global supply chains in several ways. Pandemic checks sent hundreds of billions of dollars to cabin-fevered Americans during a fallow period in the service sector. A lot of that cash has flowed to hard goods, especially home goods such as furniture and home-improvement materials. Many of these materials have to be imported from or travel through East Asia. But that region is dealing with the Delta variant, which has been considerably more deadly than previous iterations of the virus. Delta has caused several shutdowns at semiconductor factories across Asia just as demand for cars and electronics has started to pick up. As a result, these stops along the supply chain are slowing down at the very moment when Americans are demanding that they work in overdrive.

None of the problems facing supply chains are interminable or unsolvable—just annoying. As the Journal's reporting indicates, the profit motive is doing its best work to keep goods flowing by getting companies to think outside the box. And the current mess is in some ways an illustration of how remarkable the modern world of global trade really is: something that you can only fully appreciate when it isn't working quite right.

FREE MINDS

It's the second Monday of October, which means it's time to celebrate…America's most confusing quasi-national holiday. President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Friday declaring October 11 to be Indigenous Peoples Day, which means the federal government will join dozens of cities and states in honoring the contributions of Native Americans today. Of course, federal workers will have the day off because October 11 is Columbus Day, at least according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Which is it? Why not…neither? Christopher Columbus is no hero—or, at least, he's not an American hero. Italian-American communities should be free to celebrate his legacy however they want, of course, but elevating him to the level of having his own federal holiday has always seemed more than a little weird. We force George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to share, but Columbus gets his own?

And while Native Americans have been undeniably given short shrift throughout American history, co-opting Columbus Day as a way to recognize the accomplishments of Native Americans is always going to be at least a little bit awkward—and hardly makes up for centuries of mistreatment by the United States.

Creating new federal holidays isn't a bad idea—Juneteenth, for example—and surely there is some other date or dates on the calendar that could become Indigenous Peoples Day (or weekend?) instead. And anyone upset about dropping Columbus from the rotation should look up the origins of the holiday: President Benjamin Harrison declared the first Columbus Day in an attempt to end violent discrimination against Italian immigrants. Federal holidays always have a political angle. But the only thing being accomplished by the current messiness is the creation of more grist for the culture war, which is the last thing America needs.

The federal bureaucrats should have to work today. National unity demands it.

The Biden administration is considering an executive order that would include new regulations for cryptocurrencies and the appointment of a "crypto czar."

Bloomberg reports:

The proposed directive would charge federal agencies to study and offer recommendations on relevant areas of crypto—touching on financial regulation, economic innovation and national security, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing plans that are still under consideration.

The initiative will also aim to coordinate agencies' work on digital currencies throughout the executive branch, the people said. The plan would push departments that have given scant attention to crypto to focus on it.

The answer: It was not.

I have said this before and will say it again- the "Supply Chain Problems" are a perfect vignette into how we get massive government.

People don't like change. But change is constant. People see temporary fluctuations in the market as "Failure" and want to jump in and stop it.

Everyone looks at the disruption and claims they know how to properly plan this complex eco-system. Folks on the left claiming "This is why the profit motive doesn't work, it causes companies to only support the haves while the have-nots miss out." And folks on the right screaming, "This is why the profit motive doesn't work, it created the Just in Time supply chains that have failed us- when we should have manufacturing in the country!"

Given the amount of disruption leveled on the country by stupid government mandates, at any other time in history we'd be starving in the cold. But instead our biggest problem is STILL death due to obesity in this country.

        1. Claptrap   4 years ago

"I have said this before and will say it again- the “Supply Chain Problems” are a perfect vignette into how we get massive government..."

That's true enough, but in this case the problems are also the direct result of government over-reach.
In CA, we have a tin-pot-dictator wanna-be who assumes he's the smartest guy in the building, for pete's sake! He isn't; he's a smug lefty who has never dirtied his hands running a business, like most of the D-shits in Sacramento.
When he knee-capped the economy back in spring if 2020, I wasn't alone in pointing out that it's easy to stop a business; take away the license or the money. Poof!
Starting that same company back up is another matter entirely; even the most basic business needs goods from other businesses, so they must await the functioning of their suppliers (see my post at 10:40).
Now take a business, producing complex equipment at the far end of the supply chain, and watch that simple 'shut down' take months to years to correct.
This is not a 'crisis'; this is the perfectly predictable result of on more attempt at planning an economy, in this case claiming to be an effort to contain a bug which would have caused far, far less damage than the 'planning' will end up causing.
STUPID FUCKING LEFTY POLITICIANS! There ain't enough rope to string 'em up

          1. Earth Skeptic   4 years ago

Be fair. Most "better educated" people have no idea where things come from or how to make them. Why shouldn't they seek leaders who promise things will appear by edict?

It'd be fair if there WAS enough rope...

            2. American Mongrel   4 years ago

Youre probably arguing with a moron and probably on the right track, but at some point in the past i read an article about how no single human has the expertise to make a simple pencil.
If more people would accept their ignorance, the worls would be better off.

          2. Overt   4 years ago

Completely agree- even though in a free market you might have disruption, it is far more often the case that when you see a "market failure" there was probably a bunch of government activities at the root of it.

For example, everyone likes to wail about the Greedy Banks trading around "Sub Prime" mortgages back in '06. But you cannot ignore that Government Sponsored Entities owned nearly 75% of the residential mortgage market, and the Government was pumping absurd amounts of money into that same market.

            1. Sevo   4 years ago

The 'S-P' mortgages were a product of government actions, attempting to 'desegregate' the housing market.
Hell is still the destination of that road paved with good (if stupid) intentions.

            2. Joe Friday   4 years ago

Overt, that's BS. Of the subprime mortgages that failed, over 85% were with private mortgage companies not under federal regs, the biggest being Countrywide. Then the understaffed SEC did the matador review of bundling this screw up into securities, which is what brought in the WS crash.

You guys are as ideological as Marxists and just as rigidly wrong.

              1. Sevo   4 years ago

"...over 85% were with private mortgage companies not under federal regs, the biggest being Countrywide..."

And here's Joe at but one of his slimy attempts at ledgermain:
Note those companies were "...not under federal regs...", which ignores that the S-P loans were *GUARANTEED* by the US government.
Yes, the steaming pile of lefty shit is hoping you won't see the man behind the curtain; it might show this asshole to be...
                Full.
                Of.
                Shit.
(it needs to be repeated on a regular basis)

              3. Zeb   4 years ago

Joe, you seem to have a habit of telling people they are wrong and then citing something that doesn't contradict what they said.

Overt did not claim that most of the sub prime mortgages were owned by the GSEs, only that most of the residential mortgage market was.

You either aren't that bright or honest, or you need to pay closer attention to what people are actually saying.

                1. R Mac   4 years ago

“You either aren’t that bright or honest”

"Overt, that’s BS. Of the subprime mortgages that failed, over 85% were with private mortgage companies not under federal regs, the biggest being Countrywide."

Please Joe, stop with the Democratic Underground propaganda. Freddie and Fannie, GSEs, were responsible for 90% of residential mortgages originated in 2007. That they forced the remaining 10% of the market to fight over bad scraps doesn't change the fact that they were far and away the LARGEST player in the market. And it was a role they could ONLY play because they were backed by the federal government and didn't need the same capital requirements as private companies.

It is LAUGHABLE to look at GSEs representing 90% of a market and saying that it was those wreckers and kulacks who ACKSHEWALLY created the problem. It is absurd.

                1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   4 years ago

The vast majority of sub prime were "non conforming" loans that did not meet GSE standards.

They found their way to the big non-bank Wall St investment firms like Bear, Merrill, and Lehman in the packaged Mortgage Backed Securities that were sold all over the world They eventually crashed and Bear/Lehman/Merrill Lynch all failed.

This had nothing to do with FNMA or Freddie Mac - who wouldn't buy exotic loans like negative Am, balloon loans, no doc, etc.

                  1. Overt   4 years ago

"This had nothing to do with FNMA or Freddie Mac – who wouldn’t buy exotic loans like negative Am, balloon loans, no doc, etc."

SPB, you are absolutely positively full of shit.

62% of Fannie's loan acquisitions were Negative Ammortization- 72% of Freddie's.

                    https://www.thebalance.com/did-fannie-and-freddie-cause-the-mortgage-crisis-3305659

This is what happens when you flood ANY market with free money, as the government had been doing to housing since about 1998. By keeping interest rates low, it was increasingly hard to make money simply by servicing debt. At a certain point you have more money than good risks to lend it to. So you start taking on more and more risky investments. This happened everywhere in the country- from Freddie to Countrywide.

"They eventually crashed and Bear/Lehman/Merrill Lynch all failed."

Yeah, and what the fuck happened to Freddie and Fannie, SPB? THEY FAILED. Because THEY TOO were full of risky debt, offset by risky derivatives.

It takes intentional delusions of epic scales to look at an industry where **90%** of the market was run through government sponsored entities and to scream "Private market problems!!!" And yet that is what Democrats specifically have been trying to do since 2009. They throw up all these smoke screens of small factoids to distract from the big picture. But the big picture is clear- in a market DOMINATED by federal finance regulation and sponsorship, the Government must be the first place you look.

                    1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   4 years ago

Those mortgages were eventually rejected by the GSEs because they were shit.

But Wall St wanted all of them! To pack into MBS.

Analysts scrambled after Bank of America said Friday that mortgage putbacks could cost the bank $7 billion to $10 billion, or zero, as it works with private investors who are eager to unload onto the bank their securities backed by poorly underwritten mortgages.

                      https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/2011/01/bank-of-america-mortgage-putbacks.html

They forced BoA to buy their illegal crap back.

The FAILURE of the GSE's are the fault of the private market - namely Countrywide, GReat Western, IndyMac, and all the other shops that offered "innovative" loans.

To recap - the private market created shit that even the GSEs couldn't take and found suckers like Bear and Lehman to buy their crap.

The Greater Fool theory worked without the government involved.

                    2. Overt   4 years ago

"Those mortgages were eventually rejected by the GSEs because they were shit."

"eventually"? Fannie and Freddie went under because they had bad debt. The only reason they exist at all was because the Federal Government back them.

"They forced BoA to buy their illegal crap back.

The FAILURE of the GSE’s are the fault of the private market – namely Countrywide, GReat Western, IndyMac, and all the other shops that offered “innovative” loans."

I am fucking ecstatic! All it took was two posts to get you to drop your "I'm a libertarian" bullshit and start blaming the private market. You are so predictable.

"To recap – the private market created shit that even the GSEs couldn’t take and found suckers like Bear and Lehman to buy their crap."

To recap: You pulled an article from 2011- 3 years after the meltdown- to suggest that this was the private market causing the melt down.

Fannie and Freddie had all sorts of bad debt on their books. They knew what kind of debt it was, because it was all disclosed as shown in my article above. Everyone knew that it was risky debt. However they, like the fully private market, thought they could hedge these risks by selling derivatives as an insurance policy. The problem for them, like all the other companies out there, was that those derivatives could not protect them from a massive pop in the housing bubble.

Liberals, and liberals pretending to be libertarians in some bizarre concern troll dance that only fool themselves, always focus on the selling of bad debt instruments, but the ROOT ROOT cause was the housing bubble. That housing bubble was caused by the Federal Government shoving TOO much money into the economy, keeping interest rates low, giving preferential tax treatment to loans, and encouraging a "Lend to everyone" strategy. Banks would have been unwilling to lend to bad risks if they had to service mortgages, but unfortunately GSEs were there to absolve them of these bad ideas and they did it by continuously loosening the definition of what made loans conforming.

But thank you, SPB for my annual bout with you and your stupid Democrat Talking Points. Please google for more articles from 3 years after the fact.

FNMA and FMC didn't originate mortgage loans. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the market works.

Fannie Mae does not originate or provide mortgages to borrowers. But it does purchase and guarantee them through the secondary mortgage market. In fact, it's one of two of the largest purchasers of mortgages on the secondary market. The other is its sibling, the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, or Freddie Mac, another government-sponsored enterprise created by Congress.

I said they were **responsible** for 90% of the loans originated in 2007. THEY PURCHASED THEM.

                    1. Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2   4 years ago

I personally witnessed quite a few LIAR loans.

The mortgage agent would say "Just make up an income - at least $50,000. We take everyone. Home prices only go up".

This was a classic market mania.

                      No one read the applications.

I argued with progs who wanted to blame the banks for lying.

No, it was the applicant who signed off on the loan who lied.

And the cap on for Fannie was something like $290,000 for a home.

                    2. Overt   4 years ago

You want to say that Fannie and Freddie were responsible purchasers- but they went under. So then you say "Well Fannie and Freddie were responsible, but it was all those damn lying banks er no lenders er applicants". But Fannie KNEW they were buying negative am loans. They KNEW that they were buying loans with less than 10% down. That was a risk they undertook. That wasn't due to lying it was due to a market that was so full of money and low interest rates that the ONLY way they could make a profit was to go after these more exotic vehicles.

I have no affinity to the banks that blew up- or for the GSEs. They were participating in the market with their own free will and blew up. But individual businesses and their leaders fail all the time. The catastrophic meltdown in '07 was caused by a bubble. And that bubble was created by our government's easy money policies. That pumped up the bubble, and the Government's implied support of the GSEs allowed them to federalize the risk that the government was creating.

Thanks for the laugh, Mike. Never stop white knighting you crazy diamond. Now let’s read Slade, Dahlmia, Boehm Riggs, Ciaramella, Weissmueller and Welch’s posts on the matter:

“I will cast my ballot for Joe Biden in Michigan, a swing state, because there is no bigger libertarian cause right now”

“Who do you plan to vote for this year? Joe Biden. The nationalists said the libertarian-conservative consensus is dead, and I take them at their word. Also, Stephen Miller is a white nationalist.”

“I will vote strategically… for Biden.”

“I will cast my first ever vote for president for Joe Biden in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.”

“I’ve been vacillating between sitting out this election, as I did in 2016, or voting for Joe Biden. The strongest argument for the latter choice is that it’s an opportunity to support the repudiation of both Trumpism and AOC” (lol)

“I’ll be voting for Joe Biden, primarily for three reasons: (1) A feeble president Biden seems like an opportunity to erode the power and glamour of the dangerous cult of the presidency and also push socialists, nationalists, and identitarians back to the margins, creating space for a more libertarian-friendly coalition to emerge.” (Oh wow! lol)

“If it was going to be close in my state, I might have considered holding my nose and voting for the person most likely to supplant the eminently fireable incumbent.”

            1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

It's also a lot smaller, on a TEU-basis, than the big CA ports, or either Seattle or Tacoma. I do wonder why more of it isn't diverting to Mexico, e.g., Lazaro Cardenas, and being rail-shipped from there. Probably a giant PITA to add another country to the mix, NAFTA aside, and then there're the shrinkage...

              1. Moonrocks   4 years ago

My first guess would be added customs and the like, but if NAFTA takes care of that, then perhaps it's just a lack of infrastructure investment. Who would have foreseen that California would become such a communist shithole when railroads started upgrading their lines for double stack container traffic in the 1980s?

            2. ElvisIsReal   4 years ago

Portland isn't great for shipping stuff in. The city is quite a ways inland. No way PDX could handle the uptick in traffic.

        2. Gaear Grimsrud   4 years ago

And for the record the vast majority of truckers are not represented by unions. Their working hours are regulated by the federal government. But even that has little to do with port backups. If the ports were open drivers would work nights.

          1. perlhaqr   4 years ago

And for all the complaints in that article about there not being enough truckers, I can state from personal experience that the rates they're paying to have cargo moved have gone down about 25% over the last 4 to 6 months. And if there was money to be made doing drop and hooks on cargo racks, the guy that runs the company I'm working for would have us doing it.

        3. perlhaqr   4 years ago

55 mph, everywhere in the state. It's fucking retarded.

      3. Overt   4 years ago

Yes, they do point out how domestic laws keeping ports shut down, and union rules reducing hours, keep the shortage in place.

To get a job at the ports you need to be a part of the Longshoreman's Union. This is more exclusive than a Country Club. Generally you need to have family already in the Union, or you work for years as a "casual dock worker"- which is an exercise in frustration. You essentially show up in the morning at the dock-hall, and they hand out jobs to all the union members. If there is work left over, you might get something. But right now, there just is not enough TIME in the day on the unloading equipment.

        1. Ron   4 years ago

In china the loading and unloading and is controlled by computers using hand held scanners the Unions are not allowing that, they still use clip boards, this takes far longer to load and unload.

      Domestic manufacturing?

When Sam Walton started his 'Buy American' plan - WalMart was smaller than KMart and Sears. Five or six years later, WalMart became more concerned with its international growth - and made sourcing entirely about price.

I think some retailer might be able to leverage Buy Local marketing - but not a big/existing player.

      1. JeremyR   4 years ago

I unload trucks at Walmart and it never fails to amuse me that Yankee Candles are made in Vietnam and imported.

But Walmart's choice isn't just price - it's also a deliberate lack of quality. We sell stuff that will need to be replaced every year (fans for instance) or clothing that wears out after a month (shoes in particular).

Today in propaganda... All news organizations are reporting that Southwest Airlines cancelled flights due to weather and that it totally wasn't a sick bout because the union spokesman says so.

Meanwhile, "alternative" news organizations did some actual journalism and report that actual employees of southwest tell a different story. They say it totally is the vaccine mandate.

But don't worry, this is too important. So the fact check police will make sure nobody sees or hears that.

    1. Cyto   4 years ago

Btw... The airline claimed weather and flight controller shortages. The FAA quickly released a statement saying that there was no such issue with the flight control system. And other airlines said there was no such major weather disruption.

Wait. .... Wasn't southwest the airline that initially refused to implement the mandate.. Only to change course after receiving direct pressure from top administration officials?

I wonder if that is relevant here?

Is Eric being intentionally obtuse here, or is he really that ignorant? Is there not some easy-to-check information on Wikipedia or some other website that goes in to the history of Italian immigration to the US and how Columbus Day came about, or the significance of Columbus's voyages to the New World in their own right?

Native Americans may or may not have given Europe syphilis. Europe gave them smallpox, influenza, and the measles - each of which often killed over half of a native community by itself - also cholera, bubonic plague, malaria, yellow fever, and many more.

Shrug, I honestly don't see any reason for Columbus to be more lauded than, say, Thomas Paine. But this is where the Kulture Wars get you: Fighting about the importance of one person over another to be enshrined in the Pantheon.

My local school district shows they actually care about schooling more than a Kulture War. The kids have a day off today for "Professional Planning" (which is, near as I can tell, teachers go to the beach day).

      1. Claptrap   4 years ago

When they categorize it that way, it's typically a day for the teachers to get one of their mandatory training/indoctrination sessions in.

My daughter's off today for Columbus Day, but my wife has to teach because her district stole the day for either Diwali or Eid al Fitr. Which I think demonstrates RRR's point as much as anything else could.

        1. Overt   4 years ago

The point remains though. The faculty doesn't want to glorify Columbus the Imperialist Monster. And largely conservative (for California) parents don't like the idea of liberals canceling traditional icons. So the district largely did the needful: gave parents the holiday and letting the faculty work as they mostly want to.

      1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Not another vessel either, officially. Which is interesting. And not claimed to be a seamount or the like, either.

I'd read someone wondering if it was a hunk of O&G equipment sticking out of the seabed, but not otherwise marked.

The nuclear reactors spy story is another odd one. The guy's LinkedIn claimed he was a technical lead on the upcoming Columbia-class SSBN. Plus, the FBI are publicly claiming they learned about the plot by opening and reading the solicitation-for-hire package that the failed spy mailed to the foreign power's embassy. Which seems like a really big deal to let slip. Plus, intentionally not mentioning the country is an interesting twist. Could be a bunch of different ones: India, France, Israel, Brazil. Maybe SK, Japan, Australia. LOL if the Aussies originally were dealing with him, but burned him after getting in on the Virginias...

        1. Chumby   4 years ago

A former nuclear sub crewman did a video on it before it returned to Guam. Most likely they grounded on a sea mountain or whatever they are called. That area is filled with them and the charts aren’t always great. And they don’t/can’t always run terrain sonar. The pic from Guam did not show any damage above the water line.

          1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

Jive Turkey on YouTube is really great for this sort of thing.

Seamount groundings can be a lot more devastating than what Connecticut reported, see USS San Francisco. AIUI, they were damned lucky (and the Navy's insistence on continual, realistic damage control practice) to not lose that earlier boat.

It takes an expert to predict we're even going to have elections in 2024. I'm pretty sure Xi will just appoint government officials, he's not going to allow elections.

And mark my words, Xi doesn't see the West as much of a threat to China, the threat to China and the West both is Islam. And when China sees how Islam's quest for worldwide dominion is going, where the West not only doesn't bother fighting Islam but actually welcomes the conquest, he's in a race to take over the world before Islam does.

Which reminds me, I saw some retired Lt. Colonel on FOX News of all places, and I didn't catch his name so I couldn't google it to find out if he's a retard or a paid agent of China, but he was advising that if China invades Taiwan it will all be over in a matter of hours before the US can possibly make any moves to defend Taiwan so the United States needs to just see the Chinese conquest of Taiwan as a fait accompli and deal with it. We need to drop the aggressive and confrontational stance vis-a-vis China and learn to work with them as partners.

As if China hasn't done everything it could to threaten every country in the neighborhood, including India, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia, all of whom have rather formidable militaries and it's unlikely that they are all going to be willing to feed the crocodile - they know that whatever assurances China gives that Taiwan is the extent of their ambitions that China is lying it's ass off, they're all on the menu. So sure, the US is only going to be willing to send a sternly-worded letter as long as Joe Biden is President, but the rest of the world has recognized that the US is not a dependable ally anymore and they may be willing to take matters into their own hands.

And fuck Joe Biden, China would be foolish not to recognize that they have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take advantage of the fact that the United States is being led by a pack of retards and now is the time to strike.

I have zero confidence that we will get ANY competent performance from our Navy after seeing our military's performance in Afghanistan. It is far better that we let China suspect they can destroy our carrier groups than to really put ourselves in a position where they have to do it to achieve their goals.

Further, by refusing to support Taiwan, it clears the table for other allies in the Pacific. China is a problem for the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Australia (among others) to figure out. The quicker we stop giving them an excuse to not deal with the problem, the better.

      5. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

I don't think their economy will allow them to wait that long. I also don't think it's wise to bet that the West will come out of this as cleanly as it did for the unraveling of the Soviet Union.

I think of holidays like Columbus day as commemorating an important historical event, not a celebration of the person. There is hardly a historical figure who isn't some kind of sonofabitch by modern standards.

    1. Carl Cameron   4 years ago

Columbus was a good navigator and he persuaded the Spanish monarchs to fund the voyage so deserves the most credit for the event.

      1. Mickey Rat   4 years ago

Columbus was someone who had perhaps the greatest case of failing upwards. He calculated the size of the Earth much smaller than it actually is and it was only good fortune that the Americas were about where he hoped the east coast of Asia was.

        1. Jerryskids   4 years ago

The idea that Columbus proved the world is round is just stupid - everybody knew the world was round and it had a circumference of about 25,000 miles, the ancient Greeks had figured that out. Columbus argued that the circumference was about 8,000 miles and that's why nobody was willing to finance his voyage, they knew he was an idiot.

          1. Don't look at me!   4 years ago

Knowing and proving are two different things.

            1. Overt   4 years ago

The Greeks had PROVEN it over two thousand years earlier, measuring the difference in the angle of the sun between Alexandria and Syene. What did Columbus actually prove? That there was a small island on the other side of the Atlantic ocean...that proves nothing. An empirical proof that you could head in one direction and wind up back at the same point again wouldn't be given for another 30 years when Magellan circumnavigated the planet.

I thing Columbus is an important historical figure for proving to Europe that there was a land mass ripe for conquest and ultimately de-emphasizing the mid east for years. But those are political changes rather than scientific advancement.

        2. A Thinking Mind   4 years ago

Actually it was a bit of a case of unit conversion, from what I can remember. He was going off of calculations coming from Arabic sources as they'd become available with increased trade. But their "miles" like 30% bigger than European miles, so he didn't realize he was shortchanging the size of the earth by a significant amount. People who accurately understood the circumference of the earth knew it was too far to sail to the east coast of Asia.

For example, major ports in Europe and Asia operate around the clock, but American ports run at about 60 percent capacity because they close at night and on Sundays. Old USSR joke:

A man’s wife sends him to the store to get bread. After standing in line for hours, the store announces they’re out of bread, come back tomorrow. The man says “this is bullshit, some government, can’t even keep bread on the shelves!”.
And then a sinister looking man in a trench coat and dark glasses walks up to him and says “Easy comrade, that kind of talk could be dangerous to your well being”. And then makes a pistol with his fingers, points it at his head, and “pulls” the trigger. Terrified, the man returns home.

The wife sees the shocked look on his face and asks “What’s wrong, are they out of bread?”

“Much worse than that”, the man says, “they are out of bullets”.

The Three Sisters: Corn, Beans, and Squash, all arranged on a raised mound so they help each other thrive.

The Corn trellised the Bean vines, the Squash leaves overshadowed and prevented growth of weeds at the base of the Corn stalk, and the Beans were legumes that gave nutrition to both the Corn and Squash. A seamless feedback loop that sustained many settled tribes.

      1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

A lot of stuff, like the Spanish Inquisition can find their genesis way back in Al-Andalus, particularly the Caliphate of Córdoba.

The treatment of the Jews post expulsion is also a good example. The Jewish community in Spain was truly ancient, possibly having existed since Phoenician times. During the Caliphate they functioned in administrative roles, often identifying native Christian communities for Jizya or suppression.
So when the Castilians finished the reconquista (except for the Emirate of Granada) the Jews were treated like the Islamic conquerors and offered expulsion or conversion.

        1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

          Read a fucking book, son.

          1. You got the time period wrong.

          2. The "Dark Ages" concept was late Medieval chronological snobbery.

"The concept of a "Dark Age" originated in the 1330s with the Italian scholar Petrarch, who regarded the post-Roman centuries as "dark" compared to the "light" of classical antiquity.[1][2]... The concept thus came to characterize the entire Middle Ages as a time of intellectual darkness in Europe between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance. This became especially popular during the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment.[1]

The majority of modern scholars avoid the term altogether due to its negative connotations, finding it misleading and inaccurate.[8][9][10][11] Petrarch's pejorative meaning remains in use,[12][13][14] typically in popular culture which often mischaracterizes the Middle Ages as a time of violence and backwardness.[15][16]"

          1. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

One, I have read books on the subject, and check your 23AndMe before using such familial terms with people you've never even met.

It was all a "Dark" age for Reason and Freedom until The Renaissance opened things a little, followed by The Enlightenment opening things much more.

Yep, I'm a snob about letting my thoughts get sullied by being a Handmaiden of Theology and letting my work get plundered by a Lord or a King and letting my life remain as "a veil of tears" and so would be any self-respecting Modern. The facts of how life was in that time don't care about scholarly feelz on what the terms should be.

Yep. They're coloring within the lines -- for now.

      2. Cyto   4 years ago

A sick-out is an illegal strike. So officially acknowledging it as such is impossible.... Workers can get fired.

The Union has their hands tied. They are beholden to the party for all things political, and they get protection in return.

So unless the company wants to pick a political fight, they cannot publicly acknowledge it either... And doing so would also put them on the hook for accommodations.

So I guess it all depends on how much proof you require.

Employees hinting that this might happen, filing suit, weather only causing problems for 1 airline and a problem with the FAA that the FAA denies..... Quacks like a duck.

To be perfectly fair and giving the benefit of the doubt (because I doubt any Reason Editor is libertarian enough to think this but you never know), the less time that government bureaucrats spend working, the less time they have to fuck things up.

Of course Reason's boy Biden's regime is working furiously to counteract that effect by expanding the federal bureaucracy to unprecedented numbers.

Soory, I meant this for Mother re: The Dark Ages.

"It was all a “Dark” age for Reason and Freedom until The Renaissance opened things a little,"

Cliched nonsense. The Renaissance wasn't even one thing, much less something happening at one time across the continent. And where it occurred it did not strike like a bolt out of the blue. It was built upon solid traditions of knowledge and inquiry. So much so that in many places nobody can reliably establish a transition date from prior traditions.

    2. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

The Wiki page on the Clovis people has it that there were Paleo-Indians that came before the Clovis people, as your article affirmed, and that 80 percent of Native Americans can claim the Clovis as ancestors.

Addressing your assertion above, the Native Americans obviously didn't expel and kill off the Clovis people who were their ancestors and there's nothing presented in the article to suggest that Paleo-Indians were victims of expulsion and genocide, but rather overhunting of large wildlife. So, how were the Native Americans genocidal of previous people?

      1. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

I didn't mean your article. Rather the article Mother posted on Pre-Clovis people. It's getting late from my end. Must rest for the next day of Commenting. 🙂

Wait...the ports are not operating 24/7? WTF kind of operations management tolerates that, in 2021? I dunno, maybe offer O/T to clear out the backlog?

    Utter insanity.

"For example, major ports in Europe and Asia operate around the clock, but American ports run at about 60 percent capacity because they close at night and on Sundays. Even when dozens of ships are waiting to be unloaded, inflexible union rules that govern dockworkers' and truckers' hours make it difficult to meet swelling demand."

There's this thing called common carrier obligations, and they arise from monopolistic like behavior. If the longshoremen's union controls a handful of ports on the west coast, they've all but monopolized trade between the United States and Asia. I'm not arguing that the union should be broken up, just like it isn't always best to break up any monopoly.

Longshoremen have freedom of association. It's just that the results of their choice to collude has given rise to common carrier obligations. Discriminating against customers based on the time of day they arrive may constitute a breach of those obligations--which require them to take all comers at similar prices without discrimination.

Incidentally, it should be noted that common carrier obligations probably also arise when the four or five players that dominate 98% of the social media market start colluding, too. It probably isn't appropriate for them to discriminate against customers on an arbitrary basis either--for the same reasons. If you don't want to be obligated to carry content, don't collude to deprive other people of their rights.

Donald Trump may not have a right to use any port he wants for free, but he has a right to use a port, and if the longshoremen are colluding to deprive him of his right to use a port, then an obligation arises for them to treat Trump and everyone else the same without discrimination, and the government may have a legitimate responsibility to protect Trump's right to use a port.

    1. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

Longshoreman's unions and their hours and rules of operation have nothing to do with freedom of association or some spontaneous order, mutually agreed-upon convention. This is a product of union thuggery back by the Federal Government via The National Labor Relations Act, which requires any business to go unionized if a majority of the workers vote to have a union. And only one union can represent the workers of a particular specialized field or trade, so there's no competition, either between union and non-union workers or even between unionized workers.

It is legalized mob rule in violation of the individual right to live by production and free exchange...and it violates everyone's right to do so, not just Donald Trump! Jeebus, who came into being and made him God?

The reason we have the Ninth Amendment is because the framers saw today's progressives coming from 220 years away. At least that's one way to look at it. The other way is that there isn't anything new or different about progressives today. There have always been authoritarians who justified themselves in progressive terms, and the ones the framers were dealing with used more or less the same stupid arguments as progressives today.

Jay Gruden wrote some racist shit ten years ago, and no one outside of progressives media and the NFL commissioner's office seems to care.

"LAS VEGAS -- Raiders players offered defense, indifference and a no comment on Sunday when it came to coach Jon Gruden and his 10-year-old inflammatory emails that came to light over the weekend. And Gruden again apologized for his language, including a racist comment, in the missives . . . .

[Gruden], then working for ESPN as the lead analyst on Monday Night Football, had emailed then-Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen and said NFL Players Association president DeMaurice Smith, who is Black, had "lips the size of michellin tires" in 2011. Gruden also made a vulgar comment about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

In case you're wondering what the main source of the problem is, here it is right here in a few numbers:

    U.S. Population 2000 (est.) - 281.4 million
U.S. nonfarm civilian labor force 2000 (est.) - 159.4 million
    U.S. Population 2021 (est.) - 332.7 million
U.S. nonfarm civilian labor force 2021 (est.) - 153.2 million

Most people probably have no idea that we actually have a smaller labor force in raw numbers today than we had in the year 2000. And trying to meet a society's demands and maintain the supplies and standard of living with a growing population AND a decreasing labor force is simply impossible to do forever. Productivity and efficiency can only be stretched so far before they hit the breaking point, and the breaking point is just about where we're at right now.

If the able-bodied people of working age in this country, and especially the fucking Millennials in particular, don't get up off their fat lazy asses, get out of mommy's basement, and get to fucking work doing something useful pretty damn soon, this problem might become permanent. And robots aren't going to save us either, that's a bunch of complete and total bullcrap.

I think that's why he makes such a big deal about making and posting mute lists. He thinks he's punishing everyone he puts on it.

Serious question? What percentage of the commentariate formerly known as Hit and Run are activists astroturfing for some think tank or PAC?

I think Shrike, Jeff and Tony post for PAC outfits like Media Matters or some OSF beneficiaries. The Tony moniker seems to have a different operator every so often. The last one was far better educated than the current Tony, and actually engendered some begrudging respect at the time.

I'm not sure if White Mike is a paid shill, a writer, a temp or ENB's hubby. Attacking Reason or a writer, no matter how valid the reason or how mild the criticism, will instantly trigger a negative response from White Mike.
Mike also likes to hint at Reason contacts.

Sarcasmic is definitely not paid by anyone. He's just a lonely, retarded troll who ruined his reputation by drunkposting and watching too much CNN.

I'm not sure if the current Brandybuck is the real Brandybuck, or if someone stole his nick. He sounded like a very, very different person three years ago.

AmericanSocia1ist, killallrednecks, Queen Anathema, Lord of Strazele, White Knight, Buttplug, MollyGodiva and Joe Friday are all obvious socks of the first four.

Is Sqrlsy a genuine retard or sarcasmic trolling? I don't know. There's solid evidence on both sides.

Conservatives and Republicans are too stupid and too cheap to run fifty-centers. But if anyone is paid on the right side of things, it would be JesseAZ based on his hyperactivity. However he's far too willing to shit on the Republicans and conservative institutions and media for that to be true.

Columbus Day. Columbus has NOTHING to do with California. Yet there's a massive statue to Columbus in the California Statehouse. Why? I asked that to the tour guide, and she said no one had ever asked that before (yay, government schools). Turns it was a gift from some wealthy KoC Catholic. I got no problem with that.

But I wonder how much longer it will be until it gets taken down. It's not out in the open, but indoors, and I bet most people don't even know it's there. So maybe it will survive under the radar for a while longer.

Trump wishes Ashli Babbitt a happy birthday and demands the DOJ reopen the investigation into her January 6 shooting death during rally for her family and supporters
Babbitt's family and supporters held a Texas Loves Ashli Babbitt rally on Sunday to mark the Capitol rioter and Air Force veteran's 36th birthday
Donald Trump sent a video message to the event calling Babbitt 'innocent'
'There was no reason Ashli should have lost her life that day,' Trump said
Babbitt was shot on January 6 as she tried to break into the Speaker's Lobby
The officer who killed her remained anonymous for months due to death threats
He revealed his identity as Michael Byrd in an NBC interview in August
Trump previously called Byrd a 'murderer' and said the rioters are 'patriots'
At the Sunday event Babbitt's mother held Democrats responsible for her death

Even before Glibertarians there have been cycles of conservative Republican posters here who object to the independent libertarian POV of Reason.com.

They think libertarians owe the GOP their votes.

As the GOP strays farther and farther from classic liberal standards these posters claim they are owed libertarian allegiance even more than ever.

GIT HIM! HE IS EXCAPING THE GOP PLANTATION! is not acceptable.

    1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

The GOP are mouth-breathing, greedy little retards. Nobody here thinks that they're "owed" anything.

The problem is that they're the only viable alternative for keeping the second most consistently evil political party in Western history out of power (Yes, the Democrats have been worse even than Franco's Falangists and Mussolini's Nazionale Fascista).

You and your party are absolutely abhorent, Shrike. You're forces for evil. And if the GOP clownshow is the only thing that can keep you out of power, it will have to do.

turd lies. It's what turd does. turd is a pathological liar entirely too ignorant to recognize his lies. Nor is he smart enough to know everyone else knows he's a pathlogical liar.
If turd posts something which isn't a lie. it was a mistake.
turd lies; it what he does.

Does anyone care about USA dependency demonstrated in the headline? Maybe it's time manufacturing came back home at least to 50%.

Oh yeah; that's right - That last 10% isn't punished enough.. MORE corporate tax please..... /s This is why Communism and National Socialism DOESN'T WORK.

See, if we had built the trains under the Pacific that AOC wanted, we wouldn't be dependent on ships.

Yes, next some genius retailer will think of procuring goods manufactured in the same country they want to sell them.

Muh Free Markets theory still allows selling stuff that hasn't crossed an international border.

    1. Sevo   4 years ago

You first; start cutting the cork off the trees.
Are you familiar with competitive advantage? If not, you need to start reading in Muh books.

America is big enough to be several nations, and is a major producer of energy. Dependence on imports to meet demand is inevitable, but at minimum shelves should be stocked with essentials in a pandemic.

But no one in America cares. They're all obsessed with cultural war issues and remains blind to pillars of the economy starting to show cracks. If you're worried about inflation, wide open borders, and shortages in the workforce leading to disruption in supplies, and aren't amused by tiktok videos of vandals walking out of businesses with stolen loot, you belong to maybe 20-30% of the population that's sane.

The rest of the country lives in an alternate universe in which Squid Game rules pop culture and the priority in society is to offer gender neutral toy section. An American president who's slightly above Wins above replacement would be ordering executive orders or urging congress to shore up any gaps in supplies and logistics, because a little goes wrong in an economy of 380 mil people and things go haywire. We don't even have that.

Promote free trade that relies heavily on roads, ports and rail BUT ERODES the tax based to pay for them… sometimes you have to laugh.

Maybe its the half-baked free trade itself thats the problem?

"national unity"? Seriously..there is no such thing today. Trillions in printed money spent to enrich the well connected Democratic "tribes." No border control, inflation (sorry Yellen it isn't temporary and by the way inflation is the worst tax on the poor and middle class but sure enriches your friends and relatives at hedge funds and primary dealers).

As for Columbus Day..why not? He was the first explorer who started the opening up of the Western World from the Eastern World (not just Europe). And given the first modern republic was in the new world of any size in 2,000 years..well that is a good thing. As for having a day for Italian Americans..why not. We have a whole month for black and "hispanic" history..can't we Italian Americans given our immense contributions (one of the ethnic groups like the Irish who provided the muscle in our industrial revolution..25% of the US Army in Europe in WWII were of Italian heritage (50% were German). We faced not just historical discrimination and the worst lynching in US history BUT then the "woke" liberals hammered us again with racial quotas and political correctness forstalling our success in starting in the 1990s..look at say the media, ivy league, hollywood, academia, and yes democratic administrations..we are marginalized by these sectors. So screw you...we damn well deserve a day..Columbus Day forever mfers..you NYC bolsheviks have been keeping us down for decades..

Cartel's are getting their drugs and human slaves over the market in greater numbers than ever, maybe that is where US retailers need to look for supplies.
