Republicans Urged To 'Lean Into' Critical Race Theory Culture War
Plus: UFOs, young people and socialism, and more...

Critical race theory sells. "Lean into the culture war," Rep. Jim Banks (R–Ind.) is urging fellow members of a House conservative caucus. If you thought U.S. political discourse couldn't get any dumber…buckle up!
In a memo sent to the Republican Study Committee on Thursday, Banks told his colleagues that "we are in a culture war. On one side, Republicans are working to renew American patriotism and rebuild our country. On the other, Democrats have embraced and given [sic] platform to a radical element who want to tear America down."
That's pretty standard rhetoric for GOP culture warriors. The new twist is that this time, it's not communism or feminism or gay rights that have induced this hyperbole but a relatively obscure (until recently) legal/academic framework known as "critical race theory" (CRT). Its ideas have somehow escaped from academia and other wonkish circles to become a focal point of a very disingenuous, very stupid, and yet very mainstream culture war.
Yes, some concepts in CRT can be illiberal and out there. But Republicans have begun grafting the label onto any discussions or ideas about race that they don't like, while painting support for CRT's most outlandish concepts as if it's new Democratic dogma.
"The Democrat Party has wholly embraced Critical Race Theory and all its conclusions," writes Banks in his memo, adding that these Democrats think U.S. institutions are so racist they "need to be destroyed from the ground up."
It's the same fantasy-world claptrap that saw Republicans fearmongering during the 2020 election about how perpetual crime warrior Joe Biden and ex-cop Kamala Harris were going to defund the police. Meanwhile, in the real world, most Democrats in power are ho-hum centrists with very standard ideas about race and racism. And most people in the real world have no idea what CRT is really about.
The fact that it's so obscure is, in fact, what makes it a perfect canvas for conservative culture warriors to confirm their base's worst fears about The Radical Left. (Talking about CRT "is how we are going to win" House seats, said Steve Bannon recently).
So, Mexicans and antifa are out; critical race theorists—by which many Republicans mean basically anyone who mentions "privilege" or says racism is still a significant problem in America—are in.
But conservatives aren't the only ones being coy about CRT. A lot of folks on the left—and purportedly neutral media—aren't always honest about it, either.
Take this Politico piece about the Banks memo. "Critical race theory refers to the concept that racism has been systematically ingrained in American society and institutions," the publication says. "It's sparked a Republican revolt over the ideology's presence in schools, arguing that it teaches children to believe that the country is racist."
Politico and many others defending CRT these days give the impression that believing in CRT simply means a belief that systemic racism was or is real, when there's much more to it than that.
It's a perfect example of a phenomenon that leftist writer Freddie deBoer delved into last week in his newsletter:
CRT is now a completely floating signifier thanks to the motivated reasoning of those who defend it. Conventional center-left liberals feel compelled to defend CRT because conservatives attack it, but some aspects of that academic field are sufficiently extreme to make advocacy for them unpalatable, so the definition of CRT simply morphs to fit their boundaries for legitimate opinion. For many or most of the people defending critical race theory today, the tradition is just a vague assertion of the prevalence of racism, dressed up in a little academic jargon - because this conception is far more convenient for them than grappling with what CRT actually is….It has become a cultural and professional imperative that good liberals embrace CRT, so they have embraced it.
But as [Matthew] Yglesias points out here, a big part of CRT involves a skepticism towards, or an out-and-out rejection of, some elementary aspects of liberal society. This is part of a broader academic left tendency; certainly when I was in academia in the humanities a half-decade ago it was considered terribly embarrassing to believe in individual rights and the Enlightenment etc. But a lot of ordinary everyday progressives still embrace that tradition. Rather than let their social need to defend CRT conflict with that attachment, they simply invent an imaginary CRT in their heads so there's no conflict. And this is the Selfish Fallacy.
Here's the now-deleted Matthew Yglesias point that deBoer refers to:
The saddest part about the whole CRT culture war is what it emerges and distracts from. It seems to stem from and overwhelm the massive movement against police brutality and racist law enforcement that was rising and looked, for a brief moment, like it might have the ability to help enable some serious and legitimate reforms.
"What was it that you marched for, when you took the streets last year?" deBoer asks in another recent post about CRT. "Was it so that an obscure set of theories from legal education could be clumsily grafted on to school curricula in order to be implemented by overworked, sometimes hostile teachers and taught to bored and apathetic students no more engaged than they are with algebra?"
It was not, of course. People asked for an end to no-knock raids and an end to qualified immunity. Reforming of police practices. Less police funding. Bail reform. Acknowledgment that it's not just individual bigots and thugs on the police force driving story after story of abuse, but overcriminalization and bad laws. Abolishing mandatory minimums and sentencing disparities. Better treatment of people in prisons and jails. And more…
Instead, we get real criminal justice reform bills stalling and President Joe Biden funneling pandemic relief funds to police salaries, while the left and right double down on going to war over something no one can really define.
Culture war is easier, and more viscerally satisfying to political audiences, than tough and incremental changes. And school curriculum drives more voters than helping the incarcerated. So police can still kill people with impunity, people arrested but not convicted can still spend months in jail because they can't afford to pay for their freedom, and no-knock raids continue apace in most places as the press blows up local school curriculum battles and corporate diversity trainings into national crises and politicians vociferously stake out opinions on whether a seventh-grade teacher at Podunk District Schools can utter the words white privilege.

UFOs get a second look from the U.S. government:
The U.S. intelligence community, in conjunction with the Pentagon, is due in the coming days to submit a report to Congress on the subject. The Pentagon in recent years has released or confirmed the authenticity of video from naval aviators showing enigmatic aircraft exhibiting speed and maneuverability exceeding known aviation technologies.
In the lead-up to its forthcoming report, Defense Department officials have made clear they take the issue seriously while sidestepping questions about any potential extraterrestrial origins. The report marks a turning point for the U.S. military after decades of deflecting, debunking and discrediting observations of unidentified flying objects and "flying saucers."

More misleading coverage about capitalism and socialism. Without fail, media coverage of surveys on capitalism, socialism, and young people over-hype youth love for socialism these days. Case in point today: an Axios study headlined "America's Continued Move Toward Socialism." The story opens by noting that "just half of younger Americans now hold a positive view of capitalism — and socialism's appeal in the U.S. continues to grow."
The story reports on a new Axios/Momentive poll. But the poll itself finds views of capitalism still majority positive, with 57 percent of all respondents saying they view capitalism positively and just 36 percent viewing it negatively. Positive views of capitalism are slightly down from 2019 (when it stood at 61 percent), but negative views are steady at 36 percent.
Meanwhile, "overall, perceptions of socialism are still underwater nationally, with 41% of Americans saying they have a positive view and 52% saying they have a negative view," notes the poll page. This 41 percent positive is up slightly among all age groups, from 39 percent in 2019. But among young people, positive views of socialism have actually declined in the past two years.
Just 51 percent of those under 35 now say they have a positive view of socialism, down from 55 percent in 2019.
Perhaps the most interesting finding is about young Republicans, who do seem to have gotten significantly more socialistic in their thinking. For instance, the number of Republicans ages 18–34 who said the government should try to reduce income inequality has risen from 40 percent to 56 percent. And while 75 percent of Republicans overall still view capitalism positively, the number is lower—66 percent—among the youngest cohort, where it has decreased from 81 percent in the 2019 poll.

CNBC with a fear mongering headline states covid is deadlier this year than last year. Thanks Biden.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/24/covid-is-deadlier-this-year-than-all-of-2020-why-do-americans-think-its-over.html
Of course the reality is this is being done to scare Americans so they can continue to panic and government can continue to spend and utilize authoritarian powers adopted last year.
Last night Biden tweeted out the Delta variant was deadlier than the initial variant despite the CFR on the delta variant being one third that of the estimated initial CFR. No misinformation banners on Twitter however.

The main impetus for this pushing if information is to get parents to vaccinate their kids. This is despite new CDC admittance that the vaccines can cause harm to children and young adults in their cardiovascular system. The primary developer of mRNA technology gas already come out against vaccinating children with the vaccine.
The delta variants CFR is the same level as the common Flu
Interesting typo, "gas" for "has", when the right index finger already has to move 1 key left to get to "h", but 2 keys to reach "g". But maybe a typist who's strongly right handed prefers to hit those with the right hand.
Or someone is typing on a phone. So not that interesting.
Or have you never used the phone keyboards? You seem to always butt in with strange distractions...
Often the distractions are the fun part here (and elsewhere). Factors orthogonal to what's being discussed. The discussions are usually predictable, so not fun.
Making money online more than 15$ just by doing simple work from home. I have received $18376 last month. Unfortunately I have had occasion to use those phone "keyboards". Avoid whenever possible, which is just about always. I don't use cell phone service myself, only occasionally other people's.
How old are you? We’re you in an iron lung as a teenager?
"The delta variants CFR is the same level as the common Flu."
Which means the CFR for < 18 is likely lower than that of the < 18 CFR for Flu. What we are doing to kids is sick. This is not their disease.
Never question the nobility in their Noble Lie!
Not to mention the actual inventor of mRNA vaccines going on TV and openly saying, "kids and people who've already had COVID shouldn't be forced to take these because they haven't been tested enough."
well the rest of the world is having a tougher time with covid but it just shows the reality of the past lies claiming Americans aren't as healthy as the rest of the world because we don't have national healthcare. Lies and more damed lies

You know Biden is gone when even Kimmel has started making fun of him with a shoeless Joe biden tweet referencing field of dreams.
This is just a fight between Harris and DOCTOR Jill Biden to see who hand goes up the meat muppet's ass to operate the controls.
Unions and other cronies have a bigger hand and longer arm up Biden's ass.
Why does this sound like a Cards Against Humanity answer?
They steal my shit all the time. Fucking capitalists....
What was Biden's point? That he was letting us in on secrets?
HE IS NUTS!
Not really a secret.
Speaking of autocorrect, that first word was changed into 'shot.' Hilarity could have ensued.
I briefly panicked when I read your comment. For a moment I thought you wrote ‘Hillary could have ensued’. Very relieved to find out that is not the case.
he is whispering because its a secret. don't let anyone else know. actually its a sarcastic way of treating the press and the public but heck no mean tweets
"Lean into the culture war," Rep. Jim Banks (R–Ind.) is urging fellow members of a House conservative caucus. If you thought U.S. political discourse couldn't get any dumber…buckle up!
The smart thing, as always, is to surrender to the left and give them what they want. Fuck off, Reason.
See You Next Tuesday, Liz
The GOP should have learned from Trump that when the press attacks you, no matter how baseless their claims, no matter how bad faith their arguments, you should always defend yourself, apologize, explain, and argue your position because that way the press will admire you and treat you fairly. You should never go on the attack and wave off their attacks as a manifestation of how much they hate your guts and wish you were dead because that just triggers them into saying nasty things about you.
One's defense needs no apology.
Attacks? This cynical Culture War ploy was launched by the Republicans, much like how Poland launched WWII
There’s so much gaslighting in this article that nothing the writer is saying should be taken seriously.
Gaslighting is the new tool of the left. See Antifa, anti-white racism, a marxistless BLM, and now CRT.
Always remember, the "Antifascist" in "Antifa" is the same one as in the "Antifaschistische Schutzwall", or "Antifascist Protection Rampart". I.e., the official name of the Berlin Wall, as given by the builders, East Germany. That is, "the bad guys".
Antifa was founded by the explicitly Stalinist KPD in 1930s Germany. The supposedly "completely different" current version even uses the same logo as the original.
in the real world, most Democrats in power are ho-hum centrists with very standard ideas about race and racism.
So standard that they support antifa, BLM, reparations, affirmative racist action, quotas, segregated graduations, and gun control that takes useful defensive tools away from people living in crime ridden cities.
Donkeys are useful idiots for racists and socialists.
Yep. They 'avoid' the culture war by supporting it.
Amen!

Joe Biden was coached by his handlers to not yell at the press (after his debacle last week) so now he has taken to deranged whispering whenever he gets asked a question that makes him angry.
They slip Biden a roofie before every press conference now.
Bad Biden, bad!
Not to mention the hours-long delays, so they can ensure the drug cocktail they're giving him and the pre-selected questions prevents an incident of him randomly wandering off the stage or calling some reporter a "dog-faced pony soldier."
Top U.S. Officials Consulted With BlackRock as Markets Melted Down
The world’s largest asset manager was central to the pandemic crisis response. Emails and calendar records underscore that critical role.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/24/business/economy/fed-blackrock-pandemic-crisis.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur
As Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin scrambled to save faltering markets at the start of the pandemic last year, America’s top economic officials were in near-constant contact with a Wall Street executive whose firm stood to benefit financially from the rescue.
Laurence D. Fink, the chief executive of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, was in frequent touch with Mr. Mnuchin and Mr. Powell in the days before and after many of the Fed’s emergency rescue programs were announced in late March. Emails obtained by The New York Times through a records request, along with public releases, underscore the extent to which Mr. Fink planned alongside the government for parts of a financial rescue that his firm referred to in one message as “the project” that he and the Fed were “working on together.”
While some conversations were previously disclosed, the newly released emails, together with public calendar records, show the extent to which economic policymakers worked with a private company as they were drawing up a response to the financial meltdown and how intertwined BlackRock has become with the federal government.
Free minds, free markets, and locking up grandmothers in solitary confinement until they change their political views. Fuck you, Reason.
Deprogramming of January 6 Defendants Is Underway
The entire investigation is an attempt to prosecute people based on their beliefs. Those who purge their views and admit their wrongthink will be given mercy. Those who don’t will pay dearly.

y lawyer has given me names of books and movies to help me see what life is like for others in our country. I’ve learned that even though we live in a wonderful country things still need to improve. People of all colors should feel as safe as I do to walk down the street.”
That passage is part book report, part white privilege mea culpa submitted to a federal court this month by Anna Morgan-Lloyd, one of the more than 500 Americans arrested for her involvement in the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The 49-year-old grandmother of five from southern Indiana was charged with four counts of trespassing and disorderly conduct even though she walked through an open door and was inside the building for about five minutes. She was ratted out to the FBI by a county worker who saw her January 6 posts on Facebook.
On Wednesday, Lloyd, who has a clean criminal record, pleaded guilty to one count of “parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building”—but not before she consented to undergo a reeducation exercise at the urging of her court-appointed lawyer. (Like many January 6 defendants, Lloyd does not have the means to hire a private attorney.)
That is one fine grandmother.
But they are a private company!!!! So government collusion doesn't matter!!!!
Should I have waited for Jeff/WhiteMike/DoL to chime in with that?
“ Yes, some concepts in CRT can be illiberal and out there. But Republicans have begun grafting the label onto any discussions or ideas about race that they don't like, while painting support for CRT's most outlandish concepts as if it's new Democratic dogma.”
Sounds like Republicans are Qanoning Democrats.
while painting support for CRT’s most outlandish concepts as if it’s new Democratic dogma.
It is the new dogma. The masks are off. When someone tells you who they really are, listen.
It's Reason dogma too.
Nothing says "free minds" like a Maoist struggle session.
It's not all that new, just a bit more mainstream. This intersectional garbage has been a plague since 2009.
Sounds ro me like they POUNCED.
Those rascally Republicans, always stirring up trouble
Here's the biggest problem with liberaltarian complaints about fighting the culture war--the Democrats have already been fighting that for well over 30 years now, and the liberaltarians have turned a blind eye to it or excused it because they haven't, as of yet, become targets. Hence the complaints about "seizing and pouncing," and the boilerplate talking point that "this isn't real Marxism" or "this isn't real critical race theory," as liberaltarians like chemtard have advanced in recent weeks, or deflections on the order of appeals to prejudice such as his adoption of the Reel Murican perjorative that passed its expiration date in 2006, and outright lies like the whopper that the history of racism in this country wasn't taught until very recently.
This is nothing more than concern that their lefty boos will shut them out of the social circle if they don't run cover for what the former are actually doing.
They've done no such thing. They've vocally and zealously supported it because they are radical Marxists.
They indeed are. Objectively if not necessarily consciously.
This article being an example.
I think there are aspects of the culture war that we should fight as libertarians, and they have to do with hard work, frugality, self-sufficiency, laziness, stupid ostentatiousness, and dependency on government.
Libertarians capitalists should be condemning people for living off of government, whether they be government employees, people who have children they can't afford to care for properly, or people who can't keep a job without the government protecting their industry.
There are good people in the world who find themselves in circumstances where they need help--from friends, family, church groups charity, etc. And they find themselves in those situations because they made mistakes and despite their hard work. Those people generally do not need any help feeling ashamed of themselves.
There are other people who have no shame, and leading a culture war to make sure those people feel ashamed of themselves is something all good libertarians should be happy to do.
What a mindblowingly crappy and obscene ethic you have.
people who have children they can’t afford to care for properly
Ok. So if a woman knows that ahead of time - then a pre-viability abortion is not acceptable. But hey - if they go through with the pregnancy, then you'll be there to keep kicking them in the teeth forever.
people who can’t keep a job without the government protecting their industry.
No mistake here either. The person who needs a kick in the teeth is the schmuck at the bottom of the ladder. Who occasionally loses their job because they are at the bottom of the ladder. You don't have any problem with the person at the top of the ladder - who arranged for the govt subsidies in the first place and who really receives those subsidies. Those people are almost always unnamed by your ilk. This is the same sort of shit you all pull with immigrants. Blame the brown skin lettuce-picker. Not the Rand-spouting Reason donor - or the Big Bald Orange who hires rapists and some good people for his projects precisely because they were cheaper labor. Hell - I'm sure you don't have a problem with the person refinancing their mortgage with cash-out either. Govt subsidies are fine as long as you personally receive them eh.
Those people generally do not need any help feeling ashamed of themselves.
How cute. So - when you are setting fire to the homeless, how many questions are on your 'We Won't Set Fire To You If You Are Sufficiently Connected to Family and Church to Not Be Really Homeless' questionnaire?
Fucking mindblowing that you define the 'culture war' as an opportunity to beat up the disadvantaged. Do you support foreign wars as long as the purpose is to kill puppies - or only Muslim puppies?
Bizarre how Reason takes QAnon seriously but not CRT.
Behind every apparent double standard is a single operative standard. Qanon vs CRT; the killing of an unarmed non threatening demonstrator vs most any other police use of force; the treatment of 1/6 protesters vs the Kavanaugh protesters; etc. Viewed singularly they are double standards, when viewed together they collectively point left.
"the killing of an unarmed non threatening demonstrator vs most any other police use of force"
Almost forgot the Fuck you Sullum you worthless dishonest hack.
There's been a lot of confusing coverage about where we are with the [allegedly] "bipartisan" infrastructure bill--both here at Reason and elsewhere--part of it is because Biden pulled a fast one after he held a press conference to announce the "bipartisan" infrastructure deal. After announcing the infrastructure deal, Biden held a second news conference in which he announced that he would effectively veto the $1.2 trillion infrastructure deal if Congress didn't also pass his budget reconciliation deal, which is reportedly $3 trillion on everything from social spending to Green New Deal stuff, and contains all the things Biden wanted that the Republicans he was negotiating with wouldn't agree to in the infrastructure deal. For my own sanity, I've broken down the chain of events as follows:
1) Biden stopped negotiating an infrastructure deal with the Republican leadership in the Senate because he couldn’t win their support.
2) A select committee of 21 Senators, 11 of which were Republicans, were to negotiate an infrastructure deal with Biden–none of them included the Republican leadership in the Senate.
3) This select committee of Senators chose five Democrats and Five Republicans from among themselves to negotiate an infrastructure deal with Biden, and they reached a deal. The Democrats are now bringing that deal to the Senate floor so it can be voted on by the entire Senate.
4) After announcing that that the deal would be introduced on the Senate floor for a vote, Biden announced that the Democrats are also pushing through another budget reconciliation bill, which is expected to cost another $3 trillion or so. This bill will contain all the spending that the select committee with five Republicans would NOT accept–because the budget reconciliation bill doesn’t require any Republican support to pass.
5) When Lindsey Graham, one of the Republicans on the select committee that negotiated the infrastructure deal, heard that the infrastructure deal he negotiated was contingent on a second $3 trillion Democrat bill passing through budget reconciliation, last night, he tweeted that he won’t vote for the infrastructure deal that he just negotiated. All bets on those five or 11 Republican senators backing the infrastructure deal are off.
6) Mitch McConnell, likewise, said, after Biden's second announcement, that he is pessimistic that Republicans will support the infrastructure plan now that Biden has made signing the infrastructure bill contingent on the Senate passing that separate $3 trillion bill through reconciliation.
SleepyJoe is a crooked double crosser.
Biden is setting up a fight with the progressives, and if that happens, it'll be good for the Republicans, but, unfortunately, we'll still get an unprecedented amount of socialist spending from the Democrats anyway. They're just arguing over how hard they want to defile our corpses, not whether to hang us with taxes and spending.
However, we may get to see AOC and her gang go after Biden like She used to go after Pelosi--only much more so. This certainly wouldn't be the first time AOC and her allies accused the Democratic party's leadership of sexism and racism.
"Now, they're freely dunking on Ocasio-Cortez and her allies in the wake of her not-so-veiled allegation that Pelosi is discriminating against her clique, known as "The Squad," because of their lack of seniority, their gender and their skin color."
----NBC News, July 14, 2019
"Amid 'race card' allegations, Pelosi teaches Ocasio-Cortez a math lesson"
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/amid-race-card-allegations-pelosi-teaches-ocasio-cortez-math-lesson-n1029536
The assumption that AOC will take Biden's threats lying down or will suddenly start behaving like an establishment figure in this fight is pretty shaky if you ask me. To paraphrase Thatcher, the problem with social justice warriors is that they always run out of other people to ruin. The kids go after the professors who taught them to be social justice warriors, and anybody who thinks AOC is above going after Biden for being white, racist, male, and sexist is nuts.
Whenever I hear "The Squad" I think of people as intelligent as cheerleaders.
Conclusions:
Biden has as much to worry about from the progressives in the House, where the Democrats have only a nine vote majority, as he does from the Republicans in the Senate. Remember that time Trump couldn't get some Republicans to repeal 90% of ObamaCare because that was less than 100%? That's what Biden is facing on his $3 trillion reconciliation bill. They want $6 trillion, and the ones in deep blue districts don't care if it means they need to go it alone--without any Republican "bipartisan" fig leaf to hide them.
So, yes, the reason Biden is threatening not to sign the infrastructure deal if he doesn’t get the the second $3 trillion bill through reconciliation is because a lot of progressives are threatening to vote against these bills for being too small--even the $3 trillion reconciliation bill that doesn't require any Republican support. The progressive wing of the Democratic party in the House wants $6 trillion in the reconciliation bill, and they'll oppose the infrastructure bill if they think it's a substitute for what they could have had without any Republican support.
Here's the gist: There is no reason for Biden to threaten not to sign a $3 trillion reconciliation bill–that can and will pass without any Republican support whatsoever–unless he’s making the threat against Democrats.
My read for now is that the Republicans in the Senate will probably balk at all this spending, and none of them will support any of these bills whatsoever in the Senate. There won't be anything bipartisan about them when they go to the floor.,
That doesn't mean the spending won't happen. It just means that the spending will happen without any Republican support whatsoever, and the Democrats will need to answer for this spending bill in the 2022 midterms--just like when they had to answer for ObamaCare in the 2010 midterms. That's when the Democrats lost six seats in the Senate and 63 seats in the House.
'A bridge is coming near you:' Bill Cassidy confident in infrastructure deal after Biden meeting.
https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/article_da93ce4e-d51b-11eb-803f-c76d119d13cd.html
That statement of support appears to have been made before Biden's second press conference.
Lindsey Graham was also in favor of the infrastructure bill. In fact, he's one of the Republicans who negotiated it--but Graham withdrew his support when he found out about Biden's second press conference.
"If reports are accurate that President Biden is refusing to sign a bipartisan deal unless reconciliation is also passed, that would be the ultimate deal breaker for me".
----Lindsey Graham
https://twitter.com/LindseyGrahamSC/status/1408159301257076746
The bill won't come up for a floor vote for weeks, and we'll see how many Republican Senators vote for it then. But when I go to Cassidy's twitter, he doesn't appear to have made a statement in favor of the infrastructure bill since 21 hours ago, which I believe puts it squarely before Biden's second press conference.
This may need a minute to sink in. Being in a red state like Louisiana isn't like being in a blue state like Massachusetts. Republicans will vote against you in the primaries, a la the Tea Party, if they think you've betrayed their core principles. What happened to Liz Cheney wouldn't have happened to a Kennedy.
At the very least, if I were Bill Cassidy, and I'd been tricked by the Biden administration into making a public statements like that, only to have Biden hold a press conference shortly after my statements and make it seem like my earlier endorsement of the infrastructure deal were somehow an endorsement of him making the infrastructure deal contingent on $3 trillion in additional spending--on social and Green New Deal programs? I'd feel mighty betrayed!
So you completely ignored the point of Ken's post about Biden coming out last night and saying he won't sign the infrastructure bill unless the "Human Infrastructure" bill passes through reconciliation first?
Typical of you Jacob.
Lol. Sullum not only outs his sockpuppets but outs himself as a cocksucking faggot. To the absolute shock of absolutely no one.

A) help the black person, they want the black person out of the store quickly or ensure the black person has money to buy something.
B) help the white person, white privilege and black person probably won't lead to the sale.
That isnhoe CRT operates. In subjectivity where any situation can be made racist.
Yet criticizing post modernism and critical theory is called dumb political discourse by ENB... what the actual fuck.
The new twist is that this time, it's not communism or feminism or gay rights that have induced this hyperbole but a relatively obscure (until recently) legal/academic framework known as "critical race theory" (CRT).
Did ENB ask for CRT education from Jeff? Critial theory started in legal academic circles in the 60s and 70s as a form of critical theory. It isiterally based on marxism.
Yes, some concepts in CRT can be illiberal and out there. But Republicans have begun grafting the label onto any discussions or ideas about race that they don't like, while painting support for CRT's most outlandish concepts as if it's new Democratic dogma.
Some concepts? The vast majority. And no, that is not what the right is doing you ignorant cunt. Instead of using the lefts Twitter narrative how about going to read some actual articles against CRT from the right. They've shown direct tracing to CRTs push from the Zinn Foundation for example.
One such primer:
https://thefederalist.com/2021/03/25/critical-race-theory-is-not-a-single-lesson-or-training-but-a-way-of-life/
Ignorant cunts do not appreciate being lumped in with ENB.
Lol.
Meanwhile, in the real world, most Democrats in power are ho-hum centrists with very standard ideas about race and racism. And most people in the real world have no idea what CRT is really about.
More of the lies of the left being moderates as they go on a 13 trillion dollar spending binge, push CRT, increase regulations, push GND, seek to take guns, federalism elections....
Seriously go fuck yourself ENB.
Oh, she's back to using Yglesias as a neutral arbiter of reality..
Here's the now-deleted Matthew Yglesias point that deBoer refers to:
The guy who bragged about gaslighting readers over the trump tax cuts.
"Move along, nothing to see here" is not exactly a robust argument for disengagement with a clearly hostile and aggressive group.
"Question: a black person and a white person enters a store at the same time. Who does the salesperson help first."
A: Flip a coin! However, Government Almighty will disallow ANY simple unbiased fixes! First, a bipartisan Congressional committee will have to appoint a committee of expert scientists to devise methods of designing racism-free coins for any such flipping process! And, of course, experts trained by DEGREED and CREDENTIALED experts will be needed to supervise the coin-flipping process itself!
Trumpists will have only themselves to blame... If casting endless spurious doubts on near-flawless voting processes is a legitimate way to try to power-grab, then so is quibbling endlessly about a coin-flipping process!
Spaz flag
I truly don't understand why you don't just mute it. The comments are so much more coherent without having to see its' rambling.
"I truly don’t understand why you don’t just mute it."
Sevo enjoys the hell out of mindless trolling and thread-clutttering. Sevo is sadistic (evil). That's why!
A fuller general understanding is documented here... http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/
The liberaltarians are wringing their hands about this because they know an issue like liberal kafkatrapping on race and police defunding is a political loser for moderates as well as conservatives. Democrats from purple and red districts have flat-out admitted behind closed doors that arguing for getting rid of police forces hurt them in the 2020 election, and the Republicans also know that people don't like being accused of being a racist or benefitting from racism when they haven't actually done anything wrong--and they certainly don't want their kids being brainwashed with this nonsense, either. There's a distinct difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome, and the left has been going full-bore on mainstreaming the latter for about the past ten years (although it was already considered lefty dogma in the universities long before then).
That's why it's particularly important for conservatives and libertarians who don't give a shit about not upsetting their lefty friends or neighbors, to drop the pretense that "all government is bad" and start getting some skin in the game by going to school board meetings, getting involved in local planning commissions, and participating in local council meetings--because this is where the sausage is really made, and the left has already has a big head start there.
The LAST thing the left wants is for you to become politically active and actually be a presence in government. They consider all government institutions to be their turf, and threatening that monopoly is a giant alarm to them.
ENB reached new levels of stupid with this take, and that’s saying something.
Opinion: We can’t fight climate change using forced labor in China
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/06/24/china-solar-panels-biden-ban-uyghurs-human-rights/
Most Americans likely don’t know that approximately 40 percent of the world’s polysilicon, a key component of solar panels, is manufactured in China’s northwest Xinjiang region, where the United States has determined the Chinese government is perpetrating a genocide and crimes against humanity against Uyghur Muslims and other ethnic minorities. As evidence amassed in recent months that the Chinese solar industry was employing these minorities without giving them any say in the matter, pressure mounted on the Biden administration to act.
Solar industry’s ties to China’s Xinjiang region raise specter of forced labor

According to company reports, local propaganda and other public documents, Hoshine Silicon, also known as Hesheng, recruits and employs Uyghurs and other minorities via state labor programs that aim to place them in factories. Researchers say these programs are a form of forced labor for residents who, faced with the threat of detention or other punishment, cannot refuse.
"But as [Matthew] Yglesias points out here, a big part of CRT involves a skepticism towards, or an out-and-out rejection of, some elementary aspects of liberal society."
WRONG!
chemjeff, Reason.com's leading defender of CRT, has repeatedly assured us it's much less radical than that. In fact CRT is something that should be taught to public schoolchildren.

China Made Solar Cheap With Coal, Subsidies, And “Slave” Labor — Not Efficiency
Low power density means high environmental impacts and poor https://michaelshellenberger.substack.com/p/china-made-solar-cheap-with-coal
But events over the last few months make clear that the reason China came to dominate the market, producing 71% to 97% of solar panel components, is due to three main factors: cheap coal, heavy Chinese government subsidies allowing for the dumping of solar panels on foreign markets, and the use of forced labor in conditions the U.S. government representatives today describe as “genocide” and “slavery.”
...Few deny that China sold solar panels on U.S. and European markets for less than it cost to make and ship them, which is called “dumping.” Both the U.S. and EU governments in 2012 and 2013 confirmed that Chinese government was subsidizing the dumping of solar panels.
Squirrels keep eating this, from the article above.
And the Chinese government itself attributes its cheap solar panels to coal. “Over the past decade,” wrote a reporter for the web site, Global Times, which is a mouthpiece for the Chinese government, “Xinjiang has become a major polysilicon production hub in China, as the industry requires extensive amounts of energy, and that makes relatively cheaper electricity and abundant thermal power in Xinjiang appealing.”
In other words, China made solar panels cheap with coal, subsidies, and “slave” labor, not efficiency. Why is that?
Don't tell Ron Bailey.
Aaron Rupar of Vox.com is a fantastic investigative journalist. Here he unveils a major bombshell about #DeathSantis:
Hours after a building collapsed in Surfside, Ron DeSantis is on Sean Hannity's Fox News show
He. Literally. Went. On. Television.
I forget — what are the best options for recalling or impeaching a governor? Because #DeathSantis has clearly been driven mad by his failure to handle covid as well as Andrew Cuomo.

DeSantis could take a lesson from the gracious and wise Kamala Harris - after the disaster on the border she tastefully waited several months before going on TV and speaking of it.
This was one of your better ones. But Rupar makes it so easy for you.
The biggest mistake that derailed the police reform movement was emphasizing it as a racial issue in the first place. That was entirely on the progressive side. There are plenty of examples that show police get far too much discretion in when to use extreme to deadly force on citizens of all races and take people asserting their rights very badly.
Emphasizing race made the issue polarizing in an unhelpful way, 4specually since Floyd's death had little to do with racial animosity on the part of the officers involved.
Portland police issued a press release the other day that said basically "you heard wrong, the guy we shot was white, no need to riot because his life doesn't matter"
This is sadly not the first time they've stated "we killed a white guy, no need to riot." I believe it was in St. Louis where a riot almost started for a white guy before the protestors found out and went home.
Do you have a link to this press release?
So you can ignore it?
Their Twitter account count?
Yup. There was a great opportunity. Lots of Republicans were ready to work on some police reform. The radical activists and race-hustlers squandered it.
The Dems used the racist filibuster to stop a police reform bill from an African American senator.
They probably depend too much on being able to call Republicans racists to risk it.
Specifically, Sen. Sheldon "All White Club" Whitehouse.
But problems with policing ARE a racial issue, at least in part.

Jeff lies again.

Your basic facts are always subjective and essentially wrong. But you've always preferred narrative over substance. That's what sophists do after all.
But he heard it on a Democratic Underground thread! It must be true!
No, more likely he's getting it from Reddit.
There is certainly that perception and I don't doubt that it is to some extent true. But the question is, what can be done that will have an actual positive effect? I just don't think screeching about racism for a year is it. Racism is ultimately a set of ideas in people's minds. You can try to persuade, but that's all you can do and it takes time. And while racism is part of the problem, it is far from the only problem. Even if there was a magic wand to make all racism disappear, the social problems and disparities would remain.
I couldn't disagree more. The focus on race is what ruined the last attempt to get some police reform. Most of what is regarded as racist policing has more to do with income and population density than anything else. Put a ton of poor people into high density housing projects and you're going to get a lot of crime, which means lots of interactions with the police, many of which will end badly. Doesn't matter what their race is. Just so happens that in this country there are a lot of such areas that are predominantly black.
The core issue is too many victimless laws being enforced with violence. Take care of that and most problems with policing will fix themselves.

During the Truman administration, one of his housing officials made a revealing comment that you can change the physical environment in which trashy people live and try to make it nicer, but that's no guarantee that doing so will make them act less trashy. In fact, the odds are higher that they'll just shit up the nice new nest you gave them.
The Johnson administration didn't learn this lesson and started up the Great Society, and all that did was get the more cunning members of the population to establish corrupt grifter operations. And when all this money and all these big ideas STILL haven't brought about the utopia they expected, they blame it on the system itself even when they've been running that system for decades.
Put a ton of fatherless poor people into high density housing projects and you’re going to get a lot of crime
75% single parents is a huge factor. Those kids need a strong father to kick their butts occasionally.
It was only 25 percent in the late 60s, and maybe even lower before then.
While I am not categorically opposed to the butt kicking I tend to think the overarching factor is the lack of a positive role model.
""The core issue is too many victimless laws being enforced with violence. Take care of that and most problems with policing will fix themselves.""
Yep. Cops are the enforcers of the legislative branch. People who support more stupid victimless laws are partly to blame. How do they think those laws will be enforced?
How do they think those laws will be enforced?
I don't think they do. Lots of people seem to figure that "common sense" laws just kind of enforce themselves. They don't understand that government, as in the cops, has only one tool: violence. And then they're outraged when their petty laws are enforced with violence. They cry racism when these petty laws are violently enforce on blacks. They never see that the problem is the petty laws, not the enforcers.
Technically cops are officers of the court. Their job is to arrest people and bring them to a court room.
The core issue is too many victimless laws being enforced with violence. Take care of that and most problems with policing will fix themselves.
From a libertarian perspective I couldn't agree more. But libertarians are not the only ones at the table discussing the issue. A much larger group of people - and, ostensibly, a group that suffers more at the hands of police at least statistically - believes that there is a racial component as well. Having the conversation be entirely about race is a problem, but not having it about race at all is also a problem.
I've met more than a few black folks who say "It's because I'm black" whenever something doesn't go their way. Everything is about race. The bathroom was locked because they're black. The streetlight turned red because they're black. Their mother has gout because she's black. It's stupid. The only reason those people should get a seat at the table is so they can be mocked for being crybabies.
Yet below you seemed to push the CRT narrative that the anti-CRT bills are banning discussions on racism. This is a lie. Yet one projected by the pro-CRT groups. The CRT groups, as you actually finally admit above, are the ones helping to push the prism as race being the excuse used for any failures or struggles they may have. You seem to be quite inconsistent here.
The tragic thing about black racists is that having convinced themselves that all negative outcomes in their life are due to their race, they'll never remedy their obnoxious personality flaws. "You hate me because I'm black!" "No, you fail in life and nobody wants to be around you because you're a whiny little bitch. Pull yourself together, for fuck's sake."

OK! So if a group BELIEVES something, that is enough for you. Glad to see you finally acknowledging the illegitimacy of the 2020 Presidential Election
You know Jeffy’s being extra stupid when his best friend sarc disagrees with him.
"We can’t have police reform unless we at least acknowledge this basic fact."
...but we CAN have open borders before eliminating the welfare state. Is that how it works?
We CANNOT deal with stuff like QI or the over-militarization of police until we decide that racism is beyond rampant.
https://now.tufts.edu/articles/how-racial-segregation-and-policing-intersect-america
You have studied the origins and consequences of divergent policing strategies by comparing two districts within the same jurisdiction—what have you found?
Policing responds to segregated landscapes, but it also constructs and maintains them. My current project examines policing in a highly segregated rust belt city. It compares policing strategies in two districts—one that includes the city’s downtown and many middle class, affluent, and predominantly white residential neighborhoods, and one that includes predominantly Black neighborhoods and some of the city’s poorest areas.
I find, perhaps unsurprisingly, that policing in these districts is very different. In the former, the police act as responsive service providers. They are quick, thorough, and helpful when citizens call, and they work collaboratively with residents and business owners to solve local problems.
In the latter, the police focus on intervening in violence. They do so through tactics like investigatory stops, which many see as aggressive, intimidating, and overbroad. In addition, the high volume of 911 calls in this district means that patrol officers are stretched thin, and citizens have to wait longer for a response to their emergencies.
These dynamics reflect a common pattern in which predominantly Black neighborhoods are simultaneously over-policed when it comes to surveillance and social control, and under-policed when it comes to emergency services.
While policing in these districts looks quite different, the dynamics in them are actually linked. In this case, police leaders intentionally devoted more resources to protect and serve the downtown and middle-class neighborhoods. Elected officials, business owners, and empowered residents demanded police service, and police officials complied because these areas were seen as vital to the city’s economic health.
But this came at the expense of other parts of the city. Black neighborhoods were overlooked as areas meriting further resource commitments, on the one hand, and positioned as criminal threats to be controlled and contained, on the other.
In short, the police reproduced historic patterns of institutional investment and protection in white neighborhoods, and neglect and suppression in Black neighborhoods. This continued a legacy of police enforcing a social order rooted in racial exclusion and control.

LOL. He literally pre-biases the study by using an affluent neighborhood and then compares crimes/police responses to a poor neighborhood. Then blames racism..
This is hilarious.
But cytotoxic is very well informed! He heard from trusted sources at Democratic Underground AND Mother Jones that policing in America is inherently racist!
This continued a legacy of police enforcing a social order rooted in racial exclusion and control.
Sorry, no. Police respond to behavior of the citizens. Respectful, non violent citizens are treated with respect. Abusive, violent, uncooperative people are treated with the heavy hand their actions require.
Respectful, non violent citizens are treated with respect.
That is not true in general. It depends on the citizen. Look at what happened with Philandro Castile or Eric Garner. Citizens' experiences with the police depend on their race, class, location, etc. Read the article quoted below. Even 'respectful, non violent citizens' are harassed, stopped for apparently no reason, subject to searches on flimsy pretexts, because they are in the wrong part of town or have the wrong skin color.
https://sociology.columbian.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/zaxdzs1986/f/downloads/Weitzer%20%26%20Brunson%202015%20.pdf
(see p. 136)
Our study of St. Louis focused on three disadvantaged neighborhoods that differ by
racial composition: Mayfield (mostly white), Barksdale (mostly black), and Hazelcrest
(racially mixed) (Brunson & Weitzer, 2009). Holding neighborhood-level socioeconomic
status constant, we found that race matters regarding how youth are treated by the
police. For example, the vast majority of study participants, black and white alike, took
exception to what they considered unlawful police stops and highly intrusive searches.
It is important to note, however, that white youths were subjected to such involuntary
encounters far less often. Further, the vast majority of black respondents were doubtful
that officers would ever see them as anything other than criminal suspects.
White respondents, by contrast, concluded that they were in jeopardy of being stopped
by police under certain circumstances: (1) while associating with black males, (2) when
visiting or traveling through black or racially-mixed neighborhoods, or (3) when they were
dressed in attire commonly associated with urban youth gangs and/or ‘thug culture.’
White youths stopped by officers in majority black and racially mixed neighborhoods
reported that officers initially expressed concern for their wellbeing − apparently being
viewed as ‘out of place’ by officers − but if observed repeatedly in such places, officers
became suspicious of them as well (see also Waddington & Braddock, 1991). White
Mayfield youths reported having few firsthand negative experiences with officers in their
neighborhood and were more likely to give police the benefit of the doubt regarding the
lawfulness of stops. In fact, these youths called for more interface between Mayfield
residents and the police. Mayfield youths’ views of officers patrolling their streets were
counter to those expressed by the overwhelming majority of Hazelcrest and Barksdale
respondents who were frustrated by routine and seemingly indiscriminate police stops,
imploring police to stay out of their neighborhoods altogether unless requested.
Along with being upset by repeated pedestrian and vehicle stops, black male respondents
were very critical of what they described as officers frequent use of verbally demeaning
language − often consisting of racial slurs, profanity, and name-calling. Hazelcrest and
Barksdale interviewees were especially troubled that officers commonly used such tactics
in the hope of provoking youths into responding in such a manner that would lead to
them being physically assaulted and/or arrested by officers (Brunson & Weitzer, 2009).
For example, Kyle said that the police will drive by and yell, ‘You get off the corner or
we’re going to whoop your asses,’ and Antwan had heard officers say, ‘Get your asses off
this corner. What the fuck are you big, stupid motherfuckers doing?’ While both black
and white young men complained about discourteous officers, they explained that the
most despicable comments were reserved for black males. Such degrading language has
the potential to diminish officers’ moral authority in the eyes of community residents
and reduce their willingness to obey police commands.
"Rich kids who pretend to be street when they visit their weedman in the hood are less likely to be harassed by cops than gang members who routinely murder each other and commit half of the violent crime despite comprising 13% of the population"
Wow. Eye opening.
I live in St. Louis and have never heard of these neighborhoods. I can't find them on a map either.
That's because your thinking of st Louis MO, he's talking about st Louis imagination land
Maybe the names of the neighborhoods were changed for purposes of publication, I don't know. I gave you the link if you want to learn more.
Why should he learn more? The issues with this study are obvious in the abstract as I note below.
took exception to what they considered unlawful police stops and highly intrusive searches.
Interesting... using a subjective measure based on the 3 different population groups to prove an objective measure of racism. So all 3 groups may view the same stop differently, and since they do there is racism.
Interesting Jeff... LOL.
Can you try to read/understand even the abstract before posting?
"polarizing in an unhelpful way"
Sure, if you're looking to adopt reasonable reforms.
But for those who just want to stir up trouble and pick up votes, it's not in their interest to have helpful reforms, it turns down the outrage-o-meter and depresses voter turnout.
The Republican rightly fear CRT knowing it is the mere tip of the iceberg. It starts with CRT, next school will be teaching from the Common Core curriculum, teaching our kids reading using Whole Language, an then as a final trust to drop New Math on the children.
CRT is just the latest in a line of fertilizer being sold by culture warriors.
We don't need any added to the bullshit you provide.
Whatever CRT really is, laws forbidding the teaching of racist discrimination or stereotyping in public schools seem like a good idea. The fact that proponents of CRT are objecting to such laws should be a bit of a red flag.
The biggest problem that I see with these laws is the chilling effect they will have in the classroom. Teachers will be more afraid to even come close to subjects dealing with racial issues for fear of hearing the complaints of parents who are told by their kids that they are "teaching CRT" or "teaching racism" by even broaching the subject in class. Teachers will find it easier to avoid the drama and headaches by just avoiding the issue altogether. We ought to trust professionals to do the jobs they were hired to do in their fields of expertise and not try to micromanage the curricula. Otherwise, what is the point of hiring a licensed credentialed teacher in the first place? Just put Alexa in charge of the classroom with pre-programmed scripts and lesson plans.
I'm wondering how they can teach history anymore. Racism is a very real part of the history of this country, and should not be ignored. But it's not the foundation of the nation as some want to kids to be taught. That and this notion of judging the past by today's standards, and being offended by it, has to stop. They may as well stop teaching history because the entire concept is offensive.
Wow, you've really gone full Jeff.
The bills don't disallow teaching of racism, they disallow teaching inherent features like what race you are lead to a specific action or behavior.
They are still going to teach the concepts of the Civil War.
But you've gone so far left that you are now pushing the leftist narratives.
And I can provide more proof for you.
4 threads yesterday discussed Biden's anti-libertarian actions from spending to gun control. In those 4 threads you have one post with a hyperbolic strawman against conservatives.
You stated earlier this year that you will always attack the power structure equally because you don't have a side and both sides are bad... yet you had 4 really easy threads to prove this in and you failed.
Was quite hilarious actually.
But if you truly want honest discussion on CRT, go read the bills that the states have passed. They don't do what the narrative you just pushed does. You are now to the point of leftism where you a) agree with Jeff and b) freely push disproven narratives that are easily disproven by simply looking at the primary source, ie the law itself.
If thinking like this continues the biology teachers will be afraid of teaching anatomy without teaching fronology
This.
I know, right? I am reminded of a story like this:
https://abcnews.go.com/US/washington-family-claims-middle-school-students-asked-clean/story?id=78086469
It was a hands-on activity to demonstrate the historical importance of the cotton gin. And some Black parents got upset because they thought their kids were being taught "what it's like to be a slave".
I honestly think this more and more demonstrates the need for privatized schools. Let parents send their kids to whatever school they want. I hope these battles over the curriculum finally exhaust everyone and lead to privatized schools.
If she wanted to teach her children their worth she should have put down the meth pipe before naming them.
"Emzayia and Zyeshauwne Feazell"
"I'd like HR to throw their resumes away unread forever."
Though, the article only mentioned one exceptionally stupid parent, so it's possible this wasn't a widespread reaction.
First off I think there is way to much concern about this idea that racism is being taught as a foundation of this country. What we are seeing is exploration of new lens to view history. Go into any library and you might find a shelf full of books on George Washington, they are not identical but rather examination of a life from different authors perspectives. In the same way we see authors asking us to examine decision made long ago that held that people could be held as property and they effect that has had on historical trends.
"...What we are seeing is exploration of new lens to view history..."
Stupid sumbitch can't spell "lies".
I think there is way to much concern about this idea that racism is being taught as a foundation of this country.
That's just a tiny bit of what they're teaching. You know that but for some reason you've decided to be dishonest.
That's like someone in the 30's defending Nazi racial theories by pretending it's just about the Rothschilds.
Absolutely disgusting.
First we were focusing on the question of how racism may have influenced the founding of our country. I think it is not unreasonable to think that racism did influence the country at the founding and we can see some of that in the documents of the day and the Constitution.
As to what else they are teaching please innumerate, rather than just handwaving and hysterics.
By the way, going the Nazi route is most often a loser in arguments. Everyone who can't come up with a cogent argument falls back on Nazis.
"Racism is a very real part of the history of this country, and should not be ignored."
Ignorance or dishonesty?
Who is saying we cannot teach about the history of racism? We should teach it the same way we teach about the history of eugenics, fascism, or communism.
But we should not teach any of those things (and CRT is most certainly Marxism) as ideas to be accepted or promoted.
Again, you are gaslighting. Teachers are all over Tik Tok. they don't fear being attacked. The fear they will be disallowed to indoctrinate their kids. But you want that indoctrination into critical theory.
Schools have always taught about racism. The fact you believe they don't just shows you are lying.
Why does it need to be in public schools? I'd say contentious discussions about race belong in the same category as religion and politics in public schools. These are not things that agents of the state should be taking authoritative positions on. If parents want their kids to discuss these things, they can make that happen. Older kids can learn about it on their own if they so choose.
That is taking the "safe space" approach to education and I just fundamentally disagree with that. School is supposed to be where controversial topics can be discussed in a respectful environment with good-faith inquiry. Some people are going to be upset, but that just means that the inquiry is having an effect, not that anything bad has actually happened.
If you take discussion of controversial subjects out of the curriculum, then what is the point of education? Just to teach boring facts? We need critical thinkers, not conformists who shy away from controversial topics.
School is supposed to be where controversial topics can be discussed in a respectful environment with good-faith inquiry.
And you think that is what's happening in public schools?
I'm also not convinced that a vigorous and open debate about such issues is really appropriate for elementary or middle schools. Some topics are best left to more mature minds. Or at least should be introduced as the parents think is appropriate.
And you think that is what’s happening in public schools?
I think that is the ideal that should be striven for.
And obviously topics would have to be taught in an age-appropriate manner.
So, no. You actually know that is not what is happening. That teachers are shouting down students or biasing grading against those with opposing views... yet you still support it.
The objection is, in part, that the race essentialist and collective identity aspects of CRT and adjacent philosophy will be taught as fact, not subject to open debate. Jeff is gaslighting what the argument is sbout.
Is that so?
So, you would be okay with a public school using CRT - the actual CRT, i.e., "let's discriminate against white people to make up for the past" - as a part of a discussion and dialogue about race? You'd be fine with taxpayer money going to pay for that discussion? I really doubt it.
As something that violates the concept of equal protection of law and individual rights? Sure.
As something that is proper to do in a free and just society? No.
Right. So your objection is not merely because allegedly "teachers are teaching CRT as fact", it is that teachers are bringing it up *at all*, fact or not, in a manner that you don't approve of. Contrary to your initial assertion.
So who exactly is doing the gaslighting here?
What part of what I wrote did you not understand? Your framing of what I wrote is dishonest, if it is not abjectly stupid.
Teaching that equal protection under law is something that should be ignored is not a philosophy a public school should be teaching.
Why in the world do you think it should?
“Your framing of what I wrote is dishonest,”
Why do you think I call him Lying Jeffy?
No, you outed yourself with your little lie that what you were "really" complaining about is teaching CRT as "fact". That is false. You don't want the subject talked about at all, even if it is not presented as "fact", but merely as a part of a dialogue or a discussion on the topic.
Teaching that equal protection under law is something that should be ignored is not a philosophy a public school should be teaching.
Why in the world do you think it should?
It isn't about what *I* want or what *you* want. It is about having a discussion on many topics and exploring many ideas, some of which we might personally disagree with. That is what the pursuit of knowledge is supposed to be about.
"That is taking the “safe space” approach to education and I just fundamentally disagree with that. School is supposed to be where controversial topics can be discussed in a respectful environment with good-faith inquiry."
I have a feeling if instructors tried to teach Charles Murray's IQ variances between races, or someone even wanted to have a talk about phrenology you and the lefties would have a holy shitfit and shreek RACISM...even if they wanted to just TALK about it or have a lecture examining it, for academic purposes.
If they had teachers buying into it, teaching it as truth (as is happening with CRT) "hey, sorry you are black, so by the numbers, you probably have a lower IQ than the Asians" and actually told kids this stuff, you and the lefties would completely lose their shit.
Or would you be OK with teachers "just telling kids about it", because no safe spaces right?
You would be wrong. No topic should be forbidden - in an age-appropriate, context-appropriate manner. I reject the idea of "forbidden knowledge" entirely. That goes for CRT, that goes for phrenology, that goes for anything. Now, I *do* expect that the academics leading these discussions are professionals, and demand appropriate standards of proof, and don't let conversants get away with logical fallacies, and maintain order and decorum.
"Now, I *do* expect that the academics leading these discussions are professionals, and demand appropriate standards of proof, and don’t let conversants get away with logical fallacies, and maintain order and decorum."
There are countless examples of teachers not only failing to maintain order/decorum, but also objectively teaching this stuff as "this is how the US is", not "this is something to think about". They are throwing political teachings at students to be accepted as fact, not having an intellectual exercise. And grading them on it. And silencing any dissent.
It's: "here are the issues with whiteness" not "lets just look at the history of Jim Crow laws and how they were terrible for black people".
You are saying that teaching CRT to these strict standards you hold is fine, but there are countless pieces of evidence that it is not being taught this way, and in fact, direct racism is occuring.
At some point, some of the Germans needed to stand up and say "I mean I guess it was OK to postulate about there being a master race in theory, but it seems like all these fascists keep using it to take care of the Jewish problem".
Then that is a teacher professionalism problem, not a CRT problem.
"We ought to trust professionals to do the jobs they were hired to do in their fields of expertise and not try to micromanage the curricula."
Ya well we did, and they decided to teach an activist agenda, that had no place in K-12, and many of them went the extra mile to full racism. So the professionals failed us, and they need to be directed to do their jobs to a standard the taxpayer finds appropriate.
Laws that say "stop being racists" should not be hard to follow
That and most teachers aren't professionals, they are overpaid glorified babysitters
And by "activist agenda", you mean "a curriculum that challenges my worldview".
Teachers are not supposed to be mere robots that execute programming that the parents encode. Teachers, at least the good ones, are supposed to teach critical thinking and challenge students' worldviews.
Maybe we should just get rid of teachers and put kids in front of computer screens with an AI program that drills them on how to read and do math. Would that be better? You'd create a lot of drones that can't think but know how to do math.
My experience is that this is a lot how the Chinese educational system works. Students are taught to just regurgitate facts. They don't learn much critical thinking, because that would be a threat to the Chinese authorities. They are instead taught a rote list of facts that are handed down to them by authority figures as "correct". We do NOT want this educational model for ourselves.
"And by “activist agenda”, you mean “a curriculum that challenges my worldview”."
My worldview is that its not only inappropriate to teach an abstract and controversial method to K-12 students (not ABOUT it, but that it is fact), but also in implementing this they have over and over, devolved into straight up racism in the classroom. Im not paying the govt money so they can tell my white child they are a racist oppressor. And apparently, there are more people with my worldview.
The fact that you argue for this sort of stuff is just embarrassing. Its a bad hill to die on man. Not as bad as libertarians that die on the hill of pedophilia, but this isnt that far away.
Your paying the govement money, because if you didn't they would kill you
He died on that hill too.
First, NO ONE IS ACTUALLY TEACHING CRT TO K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS. That is a right-wing demagogic lie.
Second:
And apparently, there are more people with my worldview.
So what? Should education and curricula first have to meet with approval from the mob ahead of time?
This is the irony of the right-wingers around here complaining about "school indoctrination". THEY are the ones that are demanding that education be subservient to the will of the mob. THEY are the ones that are demanding that curricula be "politically correct", just according to THEIR politics.
Funny since none of the bills mention CRT at all. They mention outlawing blatantly racist ideas.
You mendacious shit. You make Tony appear honest and erudite. At least he is honest about being a progressive. Why can't you just be honest? Nobody has any regard for anything you say, because you are totally dishonest. You are pathetic.
I'm beginning to think that he isn't just merely brain damaged, or has a religious devotion to the Church of Woke D Party, he must have some sort of financial stake in textbooks or curriculum materials
You have been provided examples of teachers whose grading policies state explicitly that anyone who discusses certain topics will receive a zero, where these topics are generally anti-CRT discussions.
Yet you don't think they have an activist agenda. That or you are knowingly lying.
It’s Jeff. He’s lying.
We ought to trust professionals to do the jobs they were hired to do in their fields of expertise and not try to micromanage the curricula.
Here is a variation of the liberaltarian attempt to keep you from being engaged and exercising your right to determine as a citizen how your community is run. The last thing these people want is you resisting the left-liberal agenda in any substantive way other than rhetoric.
He is updating the medieval concept of "The Great Chain of Being" and telling you that you must trust your betters.
It is a terrible attempt at an appeal to authority that he has had to run to as every other fallacy he has offered up has been thoroughly destroyed here.
We ought to trust professionals to do the jobs they were hired to do in their fields of expertise
Trust, but verify. CRT and similar race-focused topics are in no ones field of expertise because they are inherently racist ideologies. Teachers should be held to account.
"The biggest problem that I see with these laws is the chilling effect they will have in the classroom. Teachers will be more afraid to even come close to subjects dealing with racial issues for fear of hearing the complaints of parents who are told by their kids that they are “teaching CRT” or “teaching racism” by even broaching the subject in class."
You are aware that numerous topics are the same, right? Teachers cannot discuss ANY topic unless it's of the approved narrative. Ask a teacher to discuss trans topics unless they are totally supportive.
"Teachers will find it easier to avoid the drama and headaches by just avoiding the issue altogether."
The bad side is...what, precisely?
"We ought to trust professionals to do the jobs they were hired to do in their fields of expertise and not try to micromanage the curricula."
Wasn't there considerable outrage when a school board decided to briefly teach ID? Just asking.
"Otherwise, what is the point of hiring a licensed credentialed teacher in the first place? Just put Alexa in charge of the classroom with pre-programmed scripts and lesson plans."
They seem pretty pointless hires as is, yes. Do not see the point of keeping people who declare themselves non-essential.
Yep, with CRT we go from New Math to No Math.
Here's a variation "move along, nothing to see here" deflection I mentioned upthread.
These people's tactics haven't changed in decades.
Remember...QAnon is totes serious but CRT is nothing.
Any thoughts on Intelligent Design which has dramatically less support in the halls of power than CRT?
You can tell CRT is nothing by all of these people swearing that it really is nothing. Serious guys.
I oppose running schools based on Critical Race Theory for the same reason I oppose teaching Intelligent Design on an equal par with Evolution and The Big Bang Theory. As long as Gummint Skoolz exist, they should be for learning and critical think8ng, not indoctrination of irrational dogma.
How many illiberal concepts can be put into public school curriculums before it becomes something worth pushing back against in ENB's opinion? Just wondering.
One of the big reasons why the (predominantly white) lefties of Reason don’t understand why many white parents want to defend their white children from being brainwashed and abused in school by the race hustling poverty pimp scumbags of America is that most of the Reason staffers don’t actually HAVE children of their own and don’t want to.
If ENB wasn’t a lipstick lesbian with the world’s strangest, creepiest looking beard, but was actually a normal heterosexual woman who liked men and wanted to have children of her own, I promise your she would almost certainly feel a lot different about her own children being attacked in school and relentlessly riddled with all the white guilt horseshit.
Free minds, free markets, and crushing children at their most vulnerable age by putting them in front of everyone they know and making them confess their 'sins'.
Child abuse.
If ENB had kids she would probably send them to re education CRT camps.
She’s probably pimp them out.
Nope the only motherly attention any child of hers might have received is the cold sharp caress from a curette.
I can't (and don't want to) speak for ENB, but some people don't want to have children precisely because they may not be able to afford anything but the Gummint Skoolz that put their children through meat grinders such as Critical Race Theory.
The biggest argument against having children that convinced me was the question: "What? And leave them all THIS???"
The fact that CRT is entirely based on collectivist thinking should be enough for most libertarians / individualists to dismiss it.
That explains why jeff defends it.
Yup. ^
This. CRT is expressly a subset of Critical Theory, which always and inevitably assumes a power disparity between group or class. Individuals on matter in so much as they are members of a particular group of class.
This rhetorical approach to anything should be antithetical to anyone who places any priority on individual liberty.
So let me get this straight...
The USA is arguing over GOVERNMENT INDOCTRINATION????
I'll just skip the Nazi battle and go straight to 'Government Indoctrination'???!!! (i.e. Mandatory Commie-School).
But aren't the Republicans correct that a focus on race is a bad thing for society?
And the Democrats incorrect that it's a good thing?
Well, the Dems think a focus on race is good for votes, but it looks like they were wrong there too. See recent analyses that show how more black and brown people voted for Trump in 2020 than in 2016.
I don't think the Democrats give a shit about votes anymore thanks to election fortifying.
CRT is just an effective tool in the war on the working class.
Racist definition - the doctrine that one's own racial group is superior or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.
2021 - To prevent racism one has to blame a certain race of being racist against another race thus insisting one race is inferior to the other.
Yes; It's a 'racist' focus.
Or to the main point pegged here --

"Remove merit/productivity-based compensation and see how quickly people turn to group-judged, virtue-based compensation and become “unreasonable criminals”"
I would say so. Culture wars are often stupid. But sometimes one side is just right.
When Wokes And Racists Actually Agree On Everything
When was the last war these "generals" won? This is what China wants, so it is what the media corporations want so it is what the left wants. Hive mind.
https://twitter.com/CortesSteve/status/1408261442424422410
Anti-white bigotry, couched as Critical Race Theory, infects even the US military, as shown by the shameful testimony of Mark Milley defending CRT before Congress.
As the Pentagon goes woke, the Chinese Communist Party threat intensifies…
The thing is that it's largely incredibly powerful white people pushing the anti-white racism, as part of their class war against the working class. Sure there's race hustlers like Kendi, but they're just tools for the big boys.
The white working class needs to realize that the real enemy isn't idiots like Gloria Ladson-Billings, but rather the lily-white Davos crowd who are using this stupidity to disenfranchise them.
What is appalling about these generals embracing this CRT bullshit, is that CRT attacks the Constitution as invalid because it is a racist document.
How can you be a flag officer in the US military, sworn to protect and defend the Constitution, and yet embrace any part of a belief system that denigrates the Constitution as a racist document? If you believe that the US is a racist country and racism is embedded in US law and systems, then you can't hold true to your oath because you don't believe in Constitutional principles.
If you swore an oath to the Constitution and you embrace any part of CRT, your oath is a lie.
I saw part of his comments and he seems to think the jan 6 riots were worse than anything hence the woke training. the military needs to make American whites the enemy of the state otherwise the military would never attack its own people. War is always about creating an enemy and white men are the new enemy. watch your six and load up
"Pelosi creates panel to 'seek the truth' on Capitol attack"
[...]
"WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made it official Thursday that she is creating a special committee to investigate the attack on the Capitol, saying it is "imperative that we seek the truth.”
The new committee comes after Republican senators blocked legislation that would have set up a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack. A violent mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump overran the police on Jan. 6, broke into the building and hunted for lawmakers as they tried to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s presidential election victory...."

Pretty sure the results will have to be translated from Kangaroo to English.
You didn't actual think they'd "create a special committee" to investigate election fraud did you?
You didn't actual think they'd "create a special committee" to investigate politicians abridging the freedom of speech did you?
Oh No - of course they won't. When accusations against the DNC are made it's not about disproving the accusations it's about witch-hunting the accusers.
The reason Harris is going to the border is because Trump is going to the border, and the White House didn't want Trump to be able to say whatever he wanted without a counter narrative. Now the press can cover Harris, and spin it their way, and that coverage will interfere with whatever else might have been generated by Trump.
I suspect the reason Trump is going to the border is because he's planning to run in 2024, and I think the reason Pelosi wants to dredge this up again is to 1) keep that narrative alive as a distraction and 2) to discourage Trump from running again or swing voters to support him--or whomever Trump inaugurates as his successor.
the press is already spinning. trump announced he was going to teh border last week. harris just announced to day but NBC said
Harris is going to the border and Trump announced he be going latter too. making it sound like Trump was acting in response to Harris when teh opposite is the truth
""“Pelosi creates panel to ‘seek the truth’ on Capitol attack”""
Is she going to include the part where you need F-15s and nuclear bombs?
Dunno, but I'm betting there will be plenty of fire extingishers visible (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
Dee will be aroused.
Perhaps people have issues with CRT because for example the Smithsonian's White Culture Chart. Which was nothing but racial stereotyping that was straight out of 1920 instead of 2020. And just maybe those same people took to heart Dr. Kings message:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character...
little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers...
With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
MLK soon to be cancelled, and statues pulled down.
" but some aspects of that academic field are sufficiently extreme to make advocacy for them unpalatable, so the definition of CRT simply morphs to fit their boundaries for legitimate opinion. "
But isn't that how socialism gained a foothold as an acceptable view ?

If a football coach spent the majority of his time telling his kids the game is rigged and teaching them about all the bad calls the refs have ever made instead of teaching them game strategy, skills, technique, endurance, etc...is he setting his kids up for success or failure?
You're on team stupid bro. Get used to it.
You're the water boy for team stupid, lard ass strudel.
Los is just angry because fewer and fewer people are clicking sullum articles.
A reminder it has been a few months since I last clicked a sullum article, I recommend others stop too.
My advice: Just skip the political ones. The ones on the drug war and police abuse are generally pretty good.
But, if you prefer to stick to your principles, I understand. It's the Libertarian Way.
Even when I agree with his opinion his writing is awful. Tom swift books are better written
"The ones on the drug war and police abuse are generally pretty good."
Depends on who the police abused.
(Fuck you Sullum.)
Haven't clicked a Sullum in a couple months.
Ditto
And you're a brown envelope hack who will die in poverty after Chuckie Koch dies, Jakie. Fuck yourself with a machete you disgusting, stupid, lowlife, subhuman sack of projectile diarrhea.
"You’re on team stupid"
This coming from a guy whose teammates fuck up the chemical formula for water and don't know what strawmanning means.
Jacob, that is so mean. Don't you have a moronic article to write so we can mock it?
So..... let bad refs continue to be bad.
Wow that first article, ENB is excellent at arguing her retarded strawman while ignoring everything.
Claiming crt isn't mainstream for the democrats is retarded. The president (D) literally endorced Ibrim x kendi, and diangelo, two of the most extreme crt proponents.
Fareed Zakaria has a WA post column, and a CNN show, and has stated that minority should mercilessly rape white women. Crt is mainstream and evil
Republicans Urged To 'Lean Into' Critical Race Theory Culture War
REPUBLICANS POUNCE!!!
As with every Democratic Party propagandist masquerading as a journolismer, Elizabeth Nolan Brown makes the Republican reaction the story.
"Sure there's not a lick of difference between Critical Race Theory and Nazi race theory, aside from the villains identity, but the important thing is that Republicans are being rude about it."
Interestingly, Reason has written more about the Republican reaction in this column alone, than they ever have about the peace deal with the Taliban.
Too local. Reason only reports on the super important shit like space-scented perfume.
Interestingly, Reason has written more about the Republican reaction in this column alone, than they ever have about the peace deal with the Taliban.
And of course the Bush-era Republicans are taking the wrong lesson from all this--"The Taliban will take over! This is just like Iraq all over again!"
None of them still have the slightest clue that this is the consequence of playing world police with the military, instead of saving money by just buying the key players off and colonizing them with workers like the Chinese have been doing. They're still running the Bill Kristol/Max Boot line that Trump took a giant shit on in 2016.
You know who else pounces? Kittens. And everyone loved kittens. They should be careful with this narrative, or they're going to end up with everyone loving Republicans as much as kittens.
#BidenBoom update.
The 10 richest Americans have gained a combined $169 billion this year.
Since Koch / Reason libertarianism is fundamentally about making billionaires even richer, and since billionaire wealth is skyrocketing under Biden, you could already make a case that Biden is the most libertarian President ever.
#InDefenseOfBillionaires
Small and medium sized businesses collapsed this year in record numbers. The highest amount in American history actually.
This April the Fortune 500 made their shareholders $2.9 trillion.
The highest amount in American history actually.
Isn't corporatism marvelous.
On the other, Democrats have embraced and given [sic] platform to a radical element who want to tear America down.
HOW IS THAT A SIC?
Because ENB is a retarded, half-literate cunt who doesn't understand basic English grammar.
Too old-timey. In this country we use articles, damn it!
Assuming that the writer thinks it should have said "a platform," their "sic" is in the wrong place. It should be after platform, i.e. the point immediately after which the error was clearly made, since "given [sic] a platform" would be an incorrect usage had the "a" been present. So my quote of the passage would read, "[a]nd given [sic][sic] platform..."
I think the entire article should be followed by a [sic].
It definitely made me sick.
Well, this yet again demonstrates that Reason prefers to blow the Democrats more than anything else.
Prove me wrong and move out of California you progressive twats.
It seems to stem from and overwhelm the massive movement against police brutality and racist law enforcement that was rising and looked, for a brief moment, like it might have the ability to help enable some serious and legitimate reforms.
Grifters capitalizing - and ultimately ending meaningful progress - on actual issues is nothing new.

The strategy of faking the belief that there's been no cultural and political change recently vis-a-vis popular conceptions of race, and anyone who tries to distill this change into a short-hand terminology has merely fallen for a "bogeyman," is getting increasingly bizarre [link]
In other words, good leftists and liberals must pretend that the cultural and political change they fervently advocated for, and pressured all manner of institutions to adopt, never happened (?)
That's so bankrupt and deceitful [link]

Sydney is about to be locked down AGAIN because of 22 COVID cases.
How's "zero COVID" working out for you Aussies?
Aussies or Pussies?
They are the descendants of people that were told to GTFO.
Their ancestors would be very disappointed.
Thats the problem with lockdowns, you can never have zero infections ever. When that realization is finally understood but will never be learned or acknowledged since it takes power away from government
And this was obvious from the beginning. If Australia is just now figuring it out.......
The report marks a turning point for the U.S. military after decades of deflecting, debunking and discrediting observations of unidentified flying objects and "flying saucers."
But that's all changed now.
Anything to distract from Fauci s crimes.
...57 percent of all respondents saying they view capitalism positively and just 36 percent viewing it negatively.
Unfortunately that 57 percent is flyover and 36 percent with outsized influence in education, media and public policy.
And 36% is a lot.
No shit! “Just” 36%? Did they really write that?
Damn.

MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace gushes over Jen Psaki, says 'vast majority' of White House reporters like her

"How do you feel like it's going? you get such high marks from the vast majority of the people in that room," she continued. "You spar a little bit with some of the president's detractors, but I'm sure privately they give you grudging respect. How do you feel it's going?"
"As you know, it's the job of reporters and members of the media to push me and push us when we need to give more information, when something doesn't make sense and that's part of democracy working in my view," Psaki responded.
Wallace then gave Psaki some encouraging advice.
"Stand your ground is my only advice for you," she said.
Media bias is a vast right wing conspiracy theory.
Hey, they're just fighting for gender equality. It's not every day you see someone give a woman a blowjob like that.
“You spar a little bit with some of the president’s detractors, but I’m sure privately they give you grudging respect."
Anyone still doubt that the November fraud wasn't a coup?
If she can't handle tough questions like that she really should step down.
CRT will likely backfire in the long run when students enter the real world and find they were fed a load of horse crap, and then they'll start questioning other bs they were taught by their government schools. Might even create some libertarians.
Nice fantasy world you live in, screetch.
So you still believe everything they told you in school. Sad. Very sad.
"Dispelling the “They’ll Grow Out of It” Myth"
https://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ajp.2012.12081037
Even the American Journal of Psychiatry doesn't believe that old saw.
CRT has been taught for 50 years. There has already been a shift of CRT escaping into corporations and HR boards. It has grown in size and escaped campus life.
The fact that you don't recognize this is telling.
Has the woke BS been knocked out of people leaving college?
Nope.
I see no reason to expect this to do so either.
Or, more likely, it will just create a bunch of indoctrinate, stupid, mindless lemming pieces of shit like you who just regurgitate everything they are fed. Fortunately most people aren't nearly as sick, stupid, and fucked up as you are, so most of them probably won't turn out to be self-confessed homeless drug addict alcoholic welfare queens who molest their children.
Hey the ABA told him not to worry about crt so he doesn't worry
The fuck does the American Board of Anesthesiology have to do with anything?
Remember when you were piss drunk on your other handle and linked about 45 times to the American Bar Association definition of "critical race theory" as if a law society had any fucking idea what the term meant?
It is amazing how Sqrsly and Jeff both link to the exact same lipstick on a pig.
It started out as a legal theory. It was invented by legal scholars. Civil rights lawyers would know a great deal about it. The basic premise is that racism is built in to the legal system even if we are not aware of it. This is a counter to the commonly held belief that the law is neutral to race and politics.
If you are going to be critical of something it would be a good idea to have some basic knowledge about it.
"If you are going to be critical of something it would be a good idea to have some basic knowledge about it."
This coming from the retard who tried to tell us that antibiotics are not useful for preventing infections.
Would you please just stay at the children's table and leave the adults in peace????
Ahem, Critical Theory. From which grew the bs critical race theory, is not a legal term or field, but an academic collection of post-modern dreck, largely from the misnomered social sciences. It's been discussed here before. Like so much of academe, it manages to make wild assertions, never prove them, generally saying in sixty words what could be said better in six. I may have to re-read some of the works, but look forward to it as much as I might re-reading Judith Butler or Dworkin. The recent narrative that critical race theory was born out of law schools is a laughable narrative -yes, there is some legal writing, but the vast majority has nothing to do with law. Try peddling your wares elsewhere before you tell folks to have some basic knowledge.
I hope that it creates more critical thinkers, as kids start to question "Why do the authorities not want me to learn about this forbidden topic? Maybe I will find out more about what it is." And then they will have to ask questions and formulate opinions backed by reasoned arguments about the nature of race in American society. At least that is my hope.
Mindlessly hating people because of their skin color has historically been linked to the finest critical thinkers.
The "authorities", we'll just ignore the school system, the media, your hr department and the university systems up and down the board because we're all friends here.
Critical theory has never led to critical thought.
What, you mean a system that essentially uses circular logic, and criticizes any critique of itself as strong evidence that it is correct, (and you are racist for critiquing it, racist).
That sort of unfalsifiable zealot indoctrination drivel doesn't lead to critical thinking?!
Well making all this fuss about it is just giving it more attention than it deserves. It is the latest Kraken.
Chemjeff deciding that the Klan wasn't really THAT wrong after all.
People rabidly in favor of CRT most likely have no idea what it is. People rabidly against CRT most likely have no idea what it is. As a college professor in the field told me a couple days ago, "Critical Race Theory is not being taught in any public school anywhere. Some mutation of Anti-Racism might be, but that's a completely different phylum."
"Brandybuck is a lying stupid piece of shit" - Thomas Jefferson, 1964
That's why I think the laws (at least the better written ones) addressing it are good. They bypass the whole question of what CRT really is (and it is such a convoluted and obscure way of thinking that there will always be an argument that whoever is speaking doesn't really understand) and simply forbid teaching the negative things that people, rightly or wrongly, associate with CRT. Whatever the proper name for it is, there are some disturbing things creeping into schools and mainstream culture.
“Critical Race Theory is not being taught in any public school anywhere. Some mutation of Anti-Racism might be, but that’s a completely different phylum.”
No, not at all.
"I want to understand white rage, and I'm white, and I want to understand it," he said. "So what is it that caused thousands of people to assault this building and try to overturn the Constitution of the United States of America? What caused that? I want to find that out."
There's this condition, and it's associated with a skin color. We need to understand it. And if you refuse to understand the conditions that come with being white, then it's all just a republican backlash.
As a college professor in the field told me a couple days ago, “Critical Race Theory is not being taught in any public school anywhere.
That's just a variation of the "move along, nothing to see here" deflection. The professor is a lying-ass dog.
Louden County leftists wouldn't be crafting Enemies Lists of parents and residents opposing the application of CRT in school curriculums if it wasn't actually being done.
Socialism and Communism have never been practiced anywhere either.
But we do teach about them. Or should we just delete those chapters?
As a college professor in the field told me a couple days ago,
College professor is an idiot. CRT is a set of ideas and way of looking at the world. There's no syllabus for "critical race theory". The ideas are taught within the frameworks of other schools and classes-- usually under the "ethnic studies" departments.
It's like the worn out, and much debunked trope that "Critical Race Theory has nothing to do with post modernism".
This has been discussed at length so I won't rehash it. And there are academic texts you can read which will carefully show the evolution of post-modernism in the 1970s and 80s, and its influence on the modern Critical Theories academics- including but not limited to anti-colonial theories, queer theories, gender theory etc.
But few people are arguing that someone in the universities handed a public school a syllabus on CRT and said, "teach this".
But whatever it is the public schools are trying to sneak into the curriculum was very clearly influenced by CRT academics and authors.
First, Critical Race Theory views race and racism this way: race is a political construction that was invented by white people to give themselves power while excluding all other races from it, and racism is the ordinary state of affairs in society, present in all interactions, institutions, and phenomena, and effectively permanent in society (short of a full sociocultural revolution that puts them in charge). That is, Critical Race Theory assumes that racism is present in everything under a doctrine known as “systemic racism.” Quoting from Delgado and Stefancic,
As you can see, Critical Race Theorists believe that people who they claim benefit from “systemic racism,” which they declare to be the ordinary state of affairs in society, want to maintain it, which is why Critical Race Theorists say virtually everyone is racist. People who are especially skilled at finding the “systemic racism” in everything are called “Critical Race Theorists.” They proceed according to a simplified version of this first assumption of Critical Race Theory, which can be expressed in the words of Robin DiAngelo this way: “The question is not ‘Did racism take place?’ but ‘How did racism manifest in that situation?’” That is, they assume racism is present in everything and look for it “Critically” until they find it. Importantly, this is assessed subjectively according to the “lived experience” of racism and does not depend upon there being any evidence of racism.
Yeah, it's basically a philosophy with a foundation couched entirely in question-begging and circular reasoning. People who are trying to figure out why the class struggle failed inevitably turn to race and culture as the true culprits. It happened with Gramsci, it happened with the New Left, and it's happening with the Woke Left today.
People rabidly against CRT most likely have no idea what it is.
Brandy here admits he doesn't do any legwork in his assumptions and dresses all his beliefs on nothing of substance.
But isn't that pretty much a distinction without a difference?
That's what I long thought, but now I'm not too sure. I hope I'm wrong and it's not as bad as it looks and common sense will prevail. But after the past year or so, I'm a lot less confident in the public's ability to fend off shitty ideas.
The last year was a bit different because people will believe lots of stupid shit when they fear for their lives.
This is nothing new under the sun, or course.
<i.CRT will likely backfire in the long run when students enter the real world and find they were fed a load of horse crap, and then they’ll start questioning other bs they were taught by their government schools. Might even create some libertarians.
We thought that in the 1980s.
I was fed all the DARE nonsense in the 80s. Realizing that it was all bullshit was part of what turned my into a libertarian.
*me*
Yeah, except the precepts of DARE were never taught in academia and established as the philosophical consensus of the left-liberal establishment over the last 40 years.
"Yeah, except the precepts of DARE were never taught in academia ..."
Oh horseshit! My son was taught this crap! How many more lies do you have for us today?
DARE was a secondary school program, you shit-munching loser.
Does your son love munching shit as much as you do?
Academia, noun
the environment or community concerned with the pursuit of research, education, and scholarship.
"he spent his working life in academia"
So none of these happen in high school? Have you ever made it to high school?
Also...
Some folks are intelligent, well-informed, and benevolent enough to competently discus ethics, morality, and politics. Others? They literally know how to talk shit, and little if anything else!
DARE was a secondary school program, you shit-munching loser.
Secondary school:
a school intermediate between elementary school and college and usually offering general, technical, vocational, or college-preparatory courses
The fuck do you think high school is, you shit-munching loser? Primary school? Go back to munching your shit since it's the only thing in which you have any talent.
Coming from a self-confessed homeless drug addict and alcoholic who lost his marriage because of his addictions and being a child molester this is a particularly weird flex. Not least of which because you're a Marxist.
It always seemed like the kids listening to the DARE spiel broke down into two groups:
- Kids who were already using drugs.
- Kids who weren’t ever going to use drugs, anyway.
CRT will likely backfire in the long run when students enter the real world
The last ten years, and the last year in particular, should have already dispelled that notion.
People younger than 30 are always hopeless. Give the ones you're talking about another ten years.
Dude, it's not just people younger than 30. Gen-Xers are some of the biggest enablers of this bullshit.
So were the hippie Boomers. They all didn't stay hippies. You're right though, not everyone grows out of it.
Right, you're in your early 50s now, still stuck on Jon Stewart, Mean Girls and Ministry as cultural touchstones, and you're still the same braindead radical Marxist you were 12 years ago when you first started smearing your feces on the walls of this place.
Lol.
People younger than 30 are always hopeless. Give the ones you’re talking about another ten years.
It's not people under 30 who are listening to the Patron Saint of Critical Race Theory, Robin DiAngelo's public speaking engagements.
I wouldn't call DiAngelo or Kendi the patron saints of this stuff. They're just the ones getting the most media publicity right now because their works are the most recent.
Gramsci, Marcuse, and Foucault are really the patron saints of CRT, in that they focused on culture rather than class as the means of systemic oppression, and the racial element was added later on. Academics like Peggy McIntosh and Frances Cress Welsing developed race-focused essays based on those principles and they've been wildly influential in academia and the media since then (recall Newsweek's 1993 cover with D-FENS from Falling Down that had the title "White Male Paranoia," or Peter Jennings characterizing the 1994 Republican Congressional takeover as a two-year-old temper tantrum).
Major Commands within the Air Force were actually pushing Peggy McIntosh's essay on white privilege as essential reading shortly after the riots started. This could have been done at that level, but I wouldn't be surprised if it originated at the headquarters level and Goldfein signed off on it before it was sent out. And now we have the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs parroting CRT shibboleths like "white rage" as a socio-economic phenomenon to understand, rather than an entirely understandable response to the left's decades-long race-baiting.
Hopefully the Mises Caucus.
No need for the [sic] there since that's a 100% grammatically correct sentence you ignorant fucking cunt.
No, they haven't you fucking ignorant cunt.
I wonder if that's because it's literally in the Democratic Party platform and being forced into school curricula by Democratic Party elected and appointed officials, you ignorant fucking cunt.
And her "[sic]" is in the wrong place, so her "[sic]" should have a [sic].
People are being arrested at school board meeting just for questioning CRT, that pretty muchly makes it not just dogma but political policy now.
You wouldn’t expect a libertarian publication to care about parents being arrested at school board meetings for standing up to their children being indoctrinated, now would you?
They do care. They are against it. The parents standing up against their children being indoctrinated, that is.
Look, she almost sucked soaves balls through his urethra. If that doesn't make her the most libertarian writer on reason...
There is no help for you trumptards.

According to this
@marclamonthill
video about Sen. Whitehouse and his (ahem) "exclusive" club, the key metric for whether someone is a racist is not the slogans they chant or party they support but how they *live their lives*. Worth considering:
> UFOs get a second look from the U.S. government
One needs to watch the movie The Men Who Stare at Goats, which was based on a true story, or read the book, which was the true story, to realize that just because the military is investigating something does not mean that something is legitimate. Generals can be just as utterly irrational as anti-vaxxers and conspiracists.
The Men Who Stare At Goats is about as "based on a true story" as Black Hawk Down. Let me know when there's dozens of hours of footage and testimony from military pilots demonstrating telekinesis and then we can pretend they're the same thing you stupid cunt.
It's like galaxy quest
"surly you don't think Gilligan's island is real"
"those poor people"
Lol
OK which one, Ginger or Maryanne?
Maryanne. I bet she is buck wild
Dawn Wells was the only one who made any real money from the show. She was married to some kind of lawyer who negotiated a contract where she got residuals from reruns. Reruns were not common in those days. It is still playing. Everyone else was just paid by the episode.
Yup. She had that girl next door hotness.
Second only to Betty Rubble.
Mrs. Howell. She has both money and experience. Plus, she's post-menopausal, so no risk of unwanted pregnancy. Also, Mr. Howell would look funny wearing Cuckold antlers.
There was no telekinesis in the book. Just stupid generals and colonels who thought there was and the hucksters who play them like fools.
The last seven seconds of the movie need to be excised, as it completely flips the story. The book itself was a first person account of the reporter who went diving into this nuttery.
I never saw the movie, but there was a pentagon program about remote viewing.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_viewing
I became acquainted with Gen. Albert Stubblebine in his last years. His wife, Rima Laibow MD, claims to channel his spirit. I don't trust her channeling, think their associate Ralph Fucetola has a better handle on Bert's spirit. But if anybody would have expertise in communicating across the living-dead divide, you'd think it'd be General Bert.
ENB is so out of touch with what it's like to be a normal person that she has no idea how the New Racism is affecting our daily lives.
Quite the opposite. She's a sick, fucked up, race-obsessed radical Marxist cunt who understands exactly how the New Racism is affecting our daily lives and is doing her part to spread and propagate it.
Yes, some concepts in CRT can be illiberal and out there.
Oh boo fuckity hoo. The Eugenicists are being called out. The tree is being shaken and look who's falling out of it to defend it.
Mother Jones?
Actually from what I saw one of the principles of CRT is that race is not genetic. That is a biological fact. It is a social construct. I think most of us already knew that.
It is pretty much the only thing I agree with about it.
I agree also. Gotta wonder why replacing one social construct with one that's far worse is a good idea.
" race is not genetic."
True.
And that Zyklon B was a pesticide is also true.
Toxic totalitarianism is as totalitarianism does.
To be perfectly clear:. It's not what it is, it's what you do with it that matters.
The thing is, with Critical Race Theorists, "race" is only a social construct when they want it to be. It becomes real when trashing the U.S. system.
Race is real and immutable only in the case of "whites".
REPUBLICAN BACKLASH!
Brendan O'Neill, noted Republican.
That's you, baby, that's you.
Brendan O'Neill, noted Republican and vanguard of The Backlash.
Brendan O'Neill not quite Hitch, but he'll do until someone better comes along
Brendan O'Neill, noted republican and GOP "Backlasher"
There’s a new sin. Forget gluttony. Forget sloth. The great moral error today is whiteness. To be white is to be fallen. Whiteness has become a kind of original sin, an inherited moral defect one must atone for throughout one’s life. In the wake of the brutal execution of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, this almost religious treatment of whiteness as an existential flaw has gone uber-mainstream.
Making someone feel guilty for things they did not do is a controlling technique used by domestic abusers.
The VP was never a cop, she was an iffy kind of prosecutor, which is pretty bad.
Each job has its bad apples, but to rip off some Russian novelist, each is bad in its own way.
Republican BACKLASH!!1!!!
Meh. To me there are no good wars, culture, trade, or the regular killing kind. Politicians like wars. It stirs up the masses and gives them power. I think the libertarian stance on this should be “I don’t care”.
Anyway it is a theory. A dumb theory but how do you make war against a theory. It isn’t going to change anything. There will always be some issues with race. All we can do as individuals is try to treat people with respect and kindness.
its a theory being propagated as fact just like gravity is still just a theory but is used as fact. Theory becomes fact, facts become law, laws get enforced. We are literally at all three stages right now with this "theory"
Other than some riots I saw on TV last year, and I am old enough to remember the Watts riots, I haven’t noticed any change. People get along just fine around here.
The sad part is that Reason did not do their diligence on CRT, such as reading the literature from the proponents! Kendi, the coiner of "anti-racism" and a father of the CRT movement calls for outright discrimination.
“The only remedy to racist discrimination is anti-racist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination. The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination.”
The proponents themselves shave charts that show that "white people" (whatever that means, which racist in itself) are racist for denying they are racist - yes they actually say that!
It's "equity" bases outcome theory further claims that ANY disparities between people grouped by their skin pigmentations is 100% caused by racist actions from all the people in the groups with different skin pigmentations than the underperforming skin pigment group.
How Reason can scoff this off as no big deal is simply frightening. CRT is being aggressively pursued in schools, colleges, and businesses and comes with a huge dose of anti-free speech "bias police" and other aspects like that, something you would think libertarians would be very concerned about. But not at Reason.
And ironically CRT attacks "reason", "logic", and "objectivity" as "racist western opinions".
Kendi, the coiner of “anti-racism” and a father of the CRT movement calls for outright discrimination.
Kendi is not the father of CRT. Its arguments go back decades. He's just someone who took CRT's premises to their logical conclusion--that white people and the US socio-economic structure is inherently evil and have to be brought down.
That's opinion whether he is a "father" or not. CRT took a number of turns from post-modernism from the 60's. The latest turn is the weird identity group/oppressed/oppressor flavor. And in that Kendi has been very much influential which is why I call him a founding father of modern CRT. Also in some CRT indoctrinations particularly in elementary schools, students have had to write fawning, thankful letters to "Father Kendi", so he is regarded in some CRT circles as a "father".
The latest turn is the weird identity group/oppressed/oppressor flavor.
That's been going on for a long time. As I mentioned earlier, Frances Cress Welsing and Peggy McIntosh wrote about this decades ago, and it's just a variation of the Marxist elite/working class dichotomy.
And what is your answer to that?
Turn to big government to manage what is taught in schools?
When I grew up we learned the words of a great and wise man.
“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.“
Martin Luther King
Hopefully they still teach that as well.
Thanks Echospinner and good job! We need more sane and benevolent voices around here! We've got PLENTY of the other kinds of voices!
And what is your answer to that?
Turn to big government to manage what is taught in schools?
Why do you think CRT proponents are getting so agitated about conservatives using their own institutions against them? Why would they want to give up that monopoly when it's worked so well for them?
“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.“
The left can't even follow King's plea for color-blindness in human interaction, and haven't for over 20 years--why would they change that now?
That is what I learned, not so much in school but from my life experiences, and tried to live by. I am a flawed individual like all of us.
The messages of Rev. King and others. Things like equality, dignity, personal responsibility, non-violence, respect for others.
That is the answer to something you find which takes from moral ground.
The answer is not politics to me. It is moral and personal. Politics is the worst place to look for solutions.
"...why would they change that now?"
They will NOT change that now... Because they are getting too much mileage from the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains! The likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains will take "anti-racism" and announce that they are OPPOSED to "anti-racism" after the likes of Kendi have defined "anti-racism" as Kendi likes to define it... And then the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains accepts Kendi's definition of it! And so then the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains fall right into the trap, and announce that they are OPPOSED to Kendi's "anti-racism", never bothering to get down into the details of WHAT exactly they are opposing... They simply accept Kendi's definition of "anti-racism", and say that they are opposed!
Opposed to anti-racism == anti-anti-racist, two negations == a positive, so the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains are racist! And the the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains are caught in the trap laid for stupid morons! And-or they really ARE racists!
Duh! What else can one say?!?!?
For those who have half of a brain and SOME iota of benevolence, which apparently excludes the likes of Red-Rocks-for-Brains... WHY might a principled and decent (anti-racist) person oppose Kendi's definition of "anti-racism", which apparently includes Government Almighty coercion?
Forgive me for re-posting something I have often posted, but see the below, for a detailed OLD quote from an OLD wise man from a while back, still true today...
(Short version up top).
Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, ‘The State must follow, and not lead, the character and progress of the citizen.’
Here is the full-blown quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
‘Republics abound in young civilians who believe that the laws make the city, that grave modifications of the policy and modes of living and employments of the population, that commerce, education and religion may be voted in or out; and that any measure, though it were absurd, may be imposed on a people if only you can get sufficient voices to make it a law. But the wise know that foolish legislation is a rope of sand which perishes in the twisting; that the State must follow and not lead the character and progress of the citizen; that the form of government which prevails is the expression of what cultivation exists in the population which permits it. The law is only a memorandum.’
Another relevant Emerson quote:
“All men plume themselves on the improvement of society, and no man improves.”
Modern take on the above...
Suppose that Government Almighty goes too far, and mandates no-meat diets, which many people disagree with, just like the War on Drugs today…
Then there will be underground, makeshift, amateurish animal-killing-and-butchering shops, where the animals will be treated far less humanely than they are today! (Thank You Do-Gooders!!!)
You will not be able to let Fluffy or Fido wander through the bushes in your own back yard, for fear of meat-hungry lawbreaking pet-snatchers!
(But, Meat-Hungry Lawbreaking Pet-Snatchers would make an MOST EXCELLENT name for a garage band!)
“Anti-racist” simply means “opposed to racism, and willing to say so”. Equating that with “willing to use Government Almighty force to beat you up for perceived or imagined racism” is, itself, a dog-whistle, indicating your willingness to lie, lie, lie, for your own power-grabbing, evil purposes!
“All anti-racists are power-hungry statists” is, itself, the lie being told by the statists! Beware of wolves is sheep’s clothing! Just a TINY bit of honest thinking will cut right through their bullshit!
“Anti-racist” simply means “opposed to racism, and willing to say so”.
Yes it does.
So it goes.
Thanks again Echospinner! For your voice of benevolence and reason; all too rare around here!
"Everybody wants to save the earth; nobody wants to help Mom do the dishes." -- PJ O'Rourke
Let's stop fighting about laws and policies and go do some dishes!
As much as I despise CRT, the answer to any bad idea is not "There Oughtta Be A Law..." Students and everyone else have a right (and the ability via the Internet) to access any idea, no matter how absurd.
What we should do when CRT proponents call for a Helter-Skelter, Crazy Charlie Race War is to simply jot show up.
Parents with the misfortune to have children in Gummint Skoolz should urge school boards, principals, and teachers to treat their children and each other as individuals, not as drones in a racial/tribal beehive Collective. An individual is only responsible for what he/she/favorite pronoun thinks, says, or does, not for what others of his kind do or did. And everyone should excel, achieve, pass, fail, live, or die as individuals.
If this is too hard for Gummint Skoolz and their personnel to understand and practice, then withdraw children from Gummint Skoolz, homeschool them, and taxpayers should call for the ouster of school boards and personnel who persist in indoctrinating confusion and poison into young minds.
Played right, this struggle against CRT and COVID-19 may be the final straw for Gummint Skoolz, revealing of just how useless they are and the beginning of Separation of Education and State.
This is one of the most stupid, shallow pieces Reason has ever done.
CRT is hard-core communist doctrine, perfectly described in the new Michael Knowles book "Speechless." Yes, all use of the new, lying definitions of "privilege" and "racism" is part of CRT. And racism in America was largely dead until Obama/Biden revived it so they could profit from it. Now they are indoctrinating our kids with it and trying to cause the Chinese Cultural Revolution to repeat in the US.
It is not a theory, because every single person spreading it is lying.
As for police reform, the past full year of BLM/Antifa terrorist crimes proves it's a bad idea. Letting thugs like those walk free will destroy civilization.
The people must stop both these threats by any means necessary.
People who throw the word privilege around like it's bad fail to acknowledge their own first world privilege.
If you can insult people to their face without consequences, you might have some privilege.
"The Democrat Party has wholly embraced Critical Race Theory and all its conclusions," writes Banks in his memo, adding that these Democrats think U.S. institutions are so racist they "need to be destroyed from the ground up."
Perhaps the entire Democrat Party doesn't think institutions need to be destroyed and rebuilt. But the ones who have embraced CRT certainly do.
R's are "urged to lean in" because it is an obvious winner. There are a lot of issues that get argued over that the media amplifies that really just the blue check wokes on twitter actually scream about, and everyone acts like it is a groundswell.
In this instance, they struck a nerve and we are seeing a real groundswell...against it. And the more it gets analyzed, the more real Americans appear to be disgusted by it and only the extreme activists are really on board for. And it aint just white people that are pissed about it.
"real Americans"
So, the "blue check wokes on twitter" are not "real Americans"?
No, they are not.
Hey Damiksec, damiskec, and damikesc, and ALL of your other socks…
How is your totalitarian scheme to FORCE people to buy Reason magazines coming along?
Free speech (freedom from “Cancel Culture”) comes from Facebook, Twitter, Tik-Tok, and Google, right? THAT is why we need to pass laws to prohibit these DANGEROUS companies (which, ugh!, the BASTARDS, put profits above people!)!!! We must pass new laws to retract “Section 230” and FORCE the evil corporations to provide us all (EXCEPT for my political enemies, of course!) with a “UBIFS”, a Universal Basic Income of Free Speech!
So leftist “false flag” commenters will inundate Reason-dot-com with shitloads of PROTECTED racist comments, and then pissed-off readers and advertisers and buyers (of Reason magazine) will all BOYCOTT Reason! And right-wing idiots like Damikesc will then FORCE people to support Reason, so as to nullify the attempts at boycotts! THAT is your ultimate authoritarian “fix” here!!!
“Now, to “protect” Reason from this meddling here, are we going to REQUIRE readers and advertisers to support Reason, to protect Reason from boycotts?”
Yup. Basically. Sounds rough. (Quote damikesc)

If it were not for a 17 year old girl with a cellphone camera it would not have happened.
The only thing a libertarian "leans into" is either something to prop him up after the Chocolate Thai, the plate holding his taco from the food truck, or something/somebody bent over and loudly and enthusiastically consenting to what comes next. (That covers Pot, Mexicans, and Buttsex, and if you combine all at once...Yahtzee!)
Yahtzee what you did there!
There are the oppressors and oppressed in the world, and there has been since the beginning of civilization. Greed for money and power by some is what causes oppression. Race has little to do with it. Yet is is always good to know woke, socialist liberation Reason supports the oppressors! And make no mistake, it is the Democrats that are the oppressors right now.
thank you very much for your valuable and meaningful article. This article is very exellent and awesome. I am your regular visitor and I always like and share your articles to my friends and your website is awesome. Shayariread
