Biden Tells States To Use COVID-19 Relief Funds To Hire Cops
Plus: Supreme Court rules for ranty cheerleader and against intrusive unions, RIP John McAfee, and more...

Once a crime warrior, always a crime warrior. President Joe Biden yesterday urged state officials to throw more money at U.S. cops. But with the drug war falling (at least somewhat) out of fashion, Biden has had to get creative about how to ramp up federal funds for local policing. Will using a perennial progressive target—guns—and money meant to combat COVID-19 do the trick?
The administration apparently hopes so. At a Wednesday press conference, Biden told state and local leaders that they could use money provided to them as part of the pandemic relief package to fund more police officers and hours.
"We're now providing more guidance on how [state and local governments] can use the $350 billion nationally that the American Rescue Plan has available to help reduce crime and address the root causes," said Biden. "For example, cities experiencing an increase in gun violence were able to use the American Rescue Plan dollars to hire police officers needed for community policing and to pay their overtime."
Biden has always been a Tough on Crime guy, spending much of the '80s and '90s spearheading congressional efforts to create new federal crimes, ramp up punishments for drug offenses, provide more resources to police and prosecutors, and generally find new ways to spend more federal funds on putting people behind bars. This is what made conservative fearmongering during the 2020 election about Biden being some radical "defund the police" type especially laughable.
To combat gun violence and violent crime, we're going to:
- Stem the flow of firearms
- Advance community policing
- Invest in evidence-based community violence interventions
- Expand summer programming and employment opportunities— President Biden (@POTUS) June 23, 2021
Throughout his career, Biden has specialized in using social justice and progressive causes to push conservative and reactionary law enforcement responses. He's frequently capitalized on moral panics to procure more funding for police and prosecutors. Still, some on the left inexplicably hoped he might actually be a changed man, caught up in the zeitgeist around criminal justice reform, ending mass incarceration, and giving police fewer opportunities to commit abuse.
That Biden wants to take some of the massive spending approved as pandemic relief and funnel it to cops only shows how sadly mistaken they were.
The American Rescue Plan "means more police officers, more nurses, more counselors, more social workers, more community violence interrupters to help resolve issues before they escalate into crimes," said Biden at yesterday's press conference, during which he also announced new plans to police guns.
Biden's plan to "combat the epidemic of gun violence" follows the playbook of the War on Drugs and if you think this is going to actually meaningfully reduce gun violence instead of serve as a means to funnel more people into the prison industrial complex you're a fucking fool.

First Amendment rights prevail in cheerleader Snapchat rant case. In Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L., decided yesterday by the U.S. Supreme Court, justices held 8–1 that the school district had no right to punish a high school student for using profanity on the app Snapchat after she failed to make the cheerleading squad. "Fuck school fuck softball fuck cheer fuck everything," the student—known in court filings by the initials B.L.—wrote. More from Reason's Damon Root:
"It might be tempting to dismiss [the cheerleader's] words as unworthy of…robust First Amendment protections," Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the majority. "But sometimes it is necessary to protect the superfluous in order to preserve the necessary."
The matter of Mahanoy Area School District v. B.L. originated with these words: "Fuck school fuck softball fuck cheer fuck everything." They were posted to Snapchat on a Saturday night and were accompanied by a picture of B.L. (known by her initials in court filings because she was a minor at the time) and a friend with their middle fingers raised. To say the least, B.L.'s cheerleading coaches did not like that post when it was later brought to their attention. As punishment for it, B.L. was suspended from the junior varsity cheerleading team for a full year. The question before the Supreme Court was whether school officials may punish her for this off-campus speech.

Supreme Court rules against intrusive unions. The Court yesterday issued an opinion in a case concerning whether union organizers could enter a company's property against the company's wishes in order to talk to employees about unionizing. It was filed by a California strawberry farming business. In a 6–3 opinion, the Court sided with the company, "finding that the government unconstitutionally took the growers' property right to say 'get off my lawn,'" as the National Review's Dan McLaughlin puts it.
Under current California regulations, union organizers have "a right to physically enter and occupy the growers' land for three hours per day, 120 days per year," noted the court. "Rather than restraining the growers' use of their own property, the regulation appropriates for the enjoyment of third parties the owners' right to exclude. The right to exclude is 'one of the most treasured' rights of property ownership."
"Today's ruling is a huge victory for property rights. The decision affirms that one of the most fundamental aspects of property is the right to decide who can and can't access your property." @JPTizzle https://t.co/f9g6xJT51M

...if you think this is going to actually meaningfully reduce gun violence instead of serve as a means to funnel more people into the prison industrial complex you're a fucking fool.
No one thinks that.
Nobody I know voted for Nixon.
Just look at the motivations for most of the shootings: drug sales disputes between gangs. If you import drugs over 1000 miles from Mexico to Chicago and sell them, the people who buy them will use them up and you need to import more. There is a constant movement of masses of illegal drugs every day across a continent.
A gun, once purchased or stolen, can be used over and over. You only need to buy more bullets. If we can't stop the import of illegal drugs, how could we stop the possession of illegal guns?
Gangs are still selling weed despite it being legalized in California. Mob sold cigarettes for decades. Legalization isn't a magical catch all.
Most drug related violent crime isn't gangs, but junkies abusing and neglecting their kids. Drug laws aren't going to change that whether drugs are legal or illegal.
Yeah, legalization was always nothing more than a means for the state to get its cut of the proceeds.
Gangs are still selling weed despite it being legalized in California. Mob sold cigarettes for decades.
that's because the taxes are bonkers to the point of being a form of soft prohibition.
Honestly curious here - in the late 90s in college in NYC, an ounce by itself was $450 - $550 for high quality weed. This week, same quality, in CO it's about $180 from a dispensary. How much more is it in CA? Can the taxes really be that high?
Same here in WA. The stores are cheaper than the black market. They weren’t at first, but they adjusted.
If it weren't for the taxes on cigarettes and pot there would be even less criminal involvement.
Not really. The mob sold cigarettes were generally from trucks that were robbed. Criminals will just switch avenues to make moneys, they won't simply say "aww schucks, they legalized it."
Legalizing drugs won’t get rid of all crime, but it will get rid of some. And some people’s lives won’t be ruined for getting caught with drugs.
But ultimately, drugs should be legal because the government shouldn’t have the authority to make them illegal.
On this we can agree.
Man, make R Mac feel terrible about himself why don't you.
Now I’ve got to go and rethink my whole position!

I’m just glad that they’re hiring “more community violence interrupters”. I’m sure they’re very effective.
"Still, some on the left inexplicably hoped he might actually be a changed man"
And...scene.
Boehm and ENB especially hit hard.
For example, cities experiencing an increase in gun violence were able to use the American Rescue Plan dollars to hire police officers needed for community policing and to pay their overtime.
This is what you get when your president spent last summer in his basement.
Didn’t get the “defund the police “ memo.
Will using a perennial progressive target—guns—and money meant to combat COVID-19 do the trick?
Who's going to stop them?
It might be tempting to dismiss [the cheerleader's] words as unworthy of…robust First Amendment protections...
I'm sure it was for the Court.
Dismissing the ACLU as unworthy of protecting the first amendment on the other hand...
Biden also said he would nuke citizens if they rebelled. Remeber how badly you pussies freaked out about anything Trump said?
You're fucking pussies and clowns
Correct
Trump's stuff was all off the cuff, showing poor impulse control. President Biden's is well vetted and on the teleprompter, signaling his thoughtfulness.
Obl levels. Good work.
I feel better knowing his handlers carefully considered nuking the American public, and then went ahead and decided to publicly announce it anyways.
I feel better knowing that the press seems unconcerned...or that Biden is unaware that we did poorly in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan who lacked such things.

Awesome
To combat gun violence and violent crime, we’re going to: ... Advance community policing
I'll bite. What does "advance community policing" mean?
More cops, more harassment, more jails, and more tax money to perpetuate the system. Duh.
Stop and frisk = Stand and deliver.
More money to 'consultants' who support fascism.
The basic idea is this.
Suppose there is a public park where all sorts of crime occurs. The traditional policing model is to send the cops out whenever there is a report of crime. Someone gets mugged in the park, call the cops, they take a report and maybe catch the culprit. Someone gets raped in the park, call the cops, they take a report, and maybe catch the culprit.
A better idea might be to try to understand what it is about the park that makes it conducive to crime. Poor lighting? Shabby conditions? Is the surrounding neighborhood blighted? So instead of always calling the cops reactively whenever there is a crime, instead, be proactive about crime hotspots and see what can be done to make crime less likely. In the case of the park, maybe install emergency phones, improve the lighting, improve the facilities, get community organizations involved to offer help to the vagrants or drug abusers who hang out at the park, things like that.
I'm sure the massive success of the Great Society could serve as the model here.
A better idea might be to try to understand what it is about the park that makes it conducive to crime.
Nothing.
Crappy lighting or broken benches do not automatically induce 'let's beat people and take their stuff' thoughts.
It's not the fucking landscaping that's mugging people. It's people. People who are assholes.
Here's another thing, they don't build fucked up parks. Parks don't come pre-blighted for your social conscience convenience.
People fuck parks and neighborhoods up.
Stop looking for an impersonal 'out', Jeff. At some point you've got to blame the people who did the fucking up, who did the mugging.
'Cos when someone gets raped in the bushes, it ain't the bushes fault. No matter how badly they were pruned.
Of course rapists are responsible for rape, burglars are responsible for theft. But it doesn't have to be *easy* for rapists and burglars to commit their crimes. If the aforementioned public park isn't a haven for crime because the likelihood of being caught goes down, then the wanna-be rapists and burglars have to go elsewhere.
So your solution is just to move crimes to different areas rather than arresting the criminals. It is so stupid it just may work.
Community violence interrupters are never around when you need one.
Yes Jeff, you're finally on to the secret. It must be a location that causes a crime, not the criminals who loiter at said location. Trees cause crime. Burn all forests down.
The right to exclude is 'one of the most treasured' rights of property ownership.
What if union reps wanted the growers to grow a certain type of cake?
With the union label on the bottom?
Poor Dee thought this was funny.
Democrats and Republicans in Congress are reportedly close to reaching a deal on another massive spending measure...
Which no one will read.
But hey, bipartisanship!
Romney, collins.... yeap usual cross over.
Arvada, Colorado, Police Chief Link Strate described John Hurley—who interrupted a Denver-area shooting—as "a true hero who likely disrupted what could have been a larger loss of life." Arvada police also killed him.
As someone who advocates for more carrying - much more - this is what police must be broken of and broken hard. Simply witnessing a civilian firearm cannot be cause for lethal state pants-wetting.
Cops have been taught to shoot first and ask questions later
As someone who advocates for more carrying – much more
Fist, I am curious. How much more?
So very much more. Wild west like.
The diversity, equity, and inclusion "industry is accordingly doing well, but is it doing any good?"
Beside the point. Very far beside it.
Fist, I am curios. How very far beside it?
So very much more. Far East like.
Yet another "human trafficking sting" where the only people arrested are a few men attempting to pay for sex.
This is where Biden's COVID cash will be going.
Inside the battle over the soul of the Libertarian Party.
Who knew McCain's cancer would be so impactful.
The diversity, equity, and inclusion "industry"
So, can we also consider *that* part of "infrastructure"?
It sprang forth from the success of the guilt and grievance industry.

"This is what made conservative fearmongering during the 2020 election about Biden being some radical "defund the police" type especially laughable.
CONSERVATIVES POUNCE!
Pretty sure all the radical "defund the police" talk coming from elected Democratic Party officials was the actual reason.
And all the different jurisdictions that, you know, actually defunded police.
But that wasn't mentioned in ENB's twitter feed.
Except locations did defund and crime spiked. She is as ignorant as Jeff on this point.
And it isnt just the defunding but the DAs releasing criminals and in Portland charging officers for basic riot control. Cops aren't going to do their jobs when the da will just release people and they will be charged for even minor infractions during violent riots. Plus the increase of violence against cops, up 40% last year.
ENB is just ignorant.
No, the flaxen-haired harpy is not ignorant. She is quite willful and intentional in her writing.
Like with most people like her, it’s always a bit of both.
President Joe Biden says at the White House that insurrectionists would need a lot more than guns to take on a US government equipped with a nuclear arsenal and F-15s.
Listen progs, I'm going to try and explain it.
A totalitarian government wants control of humans, not irradiated glass. You can't control an entire country and it's people with nukes, tanks, jets, battleships, drones or anything that idiots like Biden think trumps citizen ownership of firearms.
Nukes, tanks, drones and battleships can not stand on street corners and enforce "no assembly" edicts. A fighter jet can't kick down your door at 3 AM and search for contraband.
None of these things, especially nukes, can maintain the needed police state to completely subjugate and enslave a nation. A government doesn't want to kill everyone and blow up it's own infrastructure. These are the things it needs to be a tyranny in the first place. If they used nukes on everything outside of DC, they would be the absolute rulers of a big, worthless, radioactive pile of crap.
Police are always needed to maintain a police state. Boots on the ground. And no matter how many police you have on the ground, they will always be vastly outnumbered by civilians, which is why in a police state it is vital that your police have automatic weapons, while the people have nothing but their own limp dicks.
BUT, when every pedestrian has a Glock, and every homeowner has an AR-15, all that goes right out the window, because the Stasi are now outnumbered and face the real possibility of defeat.
If you want living examples, look at every insurgency the US military has tried to destroy. They're all still kicking with nothing more than AK-47's, pickup trucks and improvised explosives, because the big, scary military machines are all but useless in dealing with them.
By his own pants wetting, it seems a small group of unarmed civilians can mount an insurrection.
The one thing that gets unsaid in all of these conversations, and the Colonial pipeline fiasco as well as the Texas power grid should have driven home, is just how vulnerable the nation's infrastructure really is and subject to single points of failure. Obviously, it's set up this way for efficiency purposes AND because it was built under the assumption that its own citizens won't fuck with it.
Considering the pipeline incident now appears to have possibly been a fed glow-op rather than an actual foreign attack, it's a lot more likely that any upheaval is going to be caused by the CIA or FBI rather than Billy Bob and Jethro.
I haven't heard about teh government involvement in the colonial pipeline could you provide more info, maybe a link

It's nothing direct, just odd clues--the bitcoin drop was in a US-based server that was easily recoverable, for example.
The recovery of Bitcoin was definitely suspicious.
Biden is right, if they wanted an issurection they would have needed to bring more than the 0 they had at the Jan 6 protest
Somebody also needs to tell him--or his speechwriters--that the joke about "deer wearing kevlar" is very old, and it wasn't funny back then.
I was wondering: let's say a Red state like Texas announced that it was going to secede. The state didn't commit any aggression against the fedgov, it just said "we're not under your authority any more".
Does Shotgun Joe propose to send the Air Force to carpet bomb Dallas, Houston, etc.? Or is he just going to have those cities nuked? Is that really a viable option? And if he gives the order, is he sure it will be obeyed?
Before talking all that big talk he needs to think it through.
“he needs to think”
Good one!
"Nukes, tanks, drones and battleships can not stand on street corners and enforce “no assembly” edicts. "
Actually, tanks could. Roll into an intersection, blow up a few hundred protestors.
Using tanks on insurgents running around in a urban environment would be totally ineffective.
President Joe Biden says at the White House that insurrectionists would need a lot more than guns to take on a US government equipped with a nuclear arsenal and F-15s.
All they seemed to need was control of the media and ballot counting sites.
The folks with a nuclear arsenal and F-15s were stymied by that. You know, the folks that Biden's handlers are trying to purge?
They're stymied because they think we can survive having a president who was illegally seated.
What happens when they realize we can't?

No one is responsible for your safety should you choose to come out of your parents basement Jeff. The remedial social studies program that Morgan-Lloyd is following was created by her D.C.-based lawyer, H. Heather Shaner. Defense attorneys in the nation’s capital aren’t exactly a core part of Trump’s political base, as many have made clear in court filings in which they’ve blamed Trump for leading their clients to the edge by convincing them that the 2020 election was stolen. Some private D.C. defense lawyers told HuffPost after Jan. 6 that they were refusing to take Capitol attack cases outright.

Yes deprogramming. Courts are asking the lawyers to teach them the correct civics.

I imagine chemjeff and White Mike will both figuratively and literally masturbate to that ruling. Reeducation camps are the second best thing to the Gulag for those two.

I love lawyers refusing to take THESE cases. Makes it much easier to go after them when they DO defend kid rapists and the like. Since they apparently DO NOT feel everybody is deserving of a good defense and all.

Wrong. It's mostly peaceful assault
Ammon Bundy is running for governor of Idaho on a platform of cutting almost all taxes and ending incarceration for nonviolent crime.
Looking to steal more Oregon counties.
Drove through Oregon into Idaho last week. It was like going from a third world country into America.
Well, it was. 🙂
No thanks on Bundy, even though I support his platform.

Turns out a little libertarian fearmongering might have been in order.
Don’t you remember all the articles about how Biden would be more authoritarian here before the election?
No. Fearmongering is the antithesis of reason. It is just another example of demagoguery. Use fear to stoke an emotional response which is more powerful than any calm, rational response would be.
Demagoguery is a poison to the cause of rational public discourse.
That’s so racist.

This is an extraordinary (though unsurprising) finding. Most amazing is that the corporate sector of the US media is failing in every respect: financially, culturally, collapsing trust.
Any other industry failing like this would engage in self-critique, asking why. They never do
"The United States ranks last in media trust — at 29% — among 92,000 news consumers surveyed in 46 countries. [Link]"
Like some kind of pathological narcissist, when you show corporate media stars these facts -- you inspire more distrust than every media in **46 countries** surveyed -- they will insist it's the fault of those who distrust them: they're dumb, manipulated, primitive, racist, etc.
Canada's media sucks. It's largely held by four companies and is largely beholden to corporate interests and their owner's political views.
That said, it looks like a paragon of high minded impartial truth seeking next to the American press.
Only in North Korea or the USSR could you have found a mainstream press so propagandistic and so captive to the interests of a single party.
The news media has always been subject to the biases of their owners, though. That's why the documentary on Gawker a couple years ago was so disingenuous--yeah, Bezos buying the Post or Sheldon Adelson buying the LV Review-Journal means that they are likely going to influence the reporting. But Gawker's whole business model was based on Nick Denton's bitchy radical left-wing vindictiveness, and that ended up biting them in the ass when they got leg-dropped by Hulk Hogan.
The difference between now and, say, 50 years ago is that the press was naturally skeptical of anyone with significant political or financial power (John Kennedy being a notable exception, whom they were infatuated with and clearly went out of their way to protect from scandal). Now, the vast majority is fully on board with promoting the agenda and interests of the Democratic party, with Fox being the major exception. This was caused primarily by the increasingly incestuous pipelines between the news networks, the lobbying and think tank firms, and the major political parties.
Didn't Reason side with GAWKER in that case to boot?
Doherty wrote an article in their defense.
by creating the bill of rights the founders guaraneted forever distrust in government. this was their intent that no one trust the government and we shouldn't. The idea of trust in government is what gave us Eugenics, slaver and a welfare state and pandemic lockdowns. Trust is for sheep who believe the wolf is a good sheapard
Exactly. The founders didn't give a fuck about good intentions. They said 'these things are up to the individual to decide'.
One of the disturbing parts of the Ga auditor who wrote the post election report about issues in Fulton County was involving employees from Happy Face, people hired to run the election. It turns out this group has financial ties to Stacy Abrams.

Cleanest election ever.
Did I not see video of Atlanta region election workers they were they to put Biden in office? This was from some social media posts by some workers.
This is what made conservative fearmongering during the 2020 election about Biden being some radical "defund the police" type especially laughable.
Nobody believed Biden was a "defund the police" type, they all knew Biden was a "whatever my handlers tell me to say" type and at the time his handlers were saying "defund the police".
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), led by director Francis Collins, deleted gene sequences of SARS-CoV-2 during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic after being asked to do so by Chinese scientists.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/nih-deleted-coronavirus-sequences-at-request-of-chinese-scientists-congress-probing-new-lead-report
Oh, wow....
Local story.
Those people should be on trial right now.
We need to cite a better source, whether it be from the original, publicly available documents or other media outlets that independently verified this information. If we don't do this, the enemies of liberty, capitalism, reason, logic, and all that's good and holy will use our own claims against us.
This is from the publicly available abstract:
"The origin and early spread of SARS-CoV-2 remains shrouded in mystery. Here I identify a data set containing SARS-CoV-2 sequences from early in the Wuhan epidemic that has been deleted from the NIH's Sequence Read Archive. I recover the deleted files from the Google Cloud, and reconstruct partial sequences of 13 early epidemic viruses. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences in the context of carefully annotated existing data suggests that the Huanan Seafood Market sequences that are the focus of the joint WHO-China report are not fully representative of the viruses in Wuhan early in the epidemic. Instead, the progenitor of known SARS-CoV-2 sequences likely contained three mutations relative to the market viruses that made it more similar to SARS-CoV-2's bat coronavirus relatives".

"Recovery of deleted deep sequencing data sheds more light on the early Wuhan SARS-CoV-2 epidemic"
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.06.18.449051v1
This appears to be a reputable lab, but we need other scientists to confirm that this data was collected from the right source on the cloud, that this data was not present in the analysis done by WHO researchers, that the sequencing using the missing data was done correctly, etc.
Someone needs to explain why that data was missing from the official account.
P.S. Holy fucking shit!
The story quotes the NIH itself. I actually like watching the usual idiots here attack a source instead of reading the source.
The NIH confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that it deleted the gene sequences in June 2020 after they had been submitted three months earlier.
Let Jeff and White Mike cry about the source.
There were five bills pending in the House that were aimed at taming social media earlier this week. Two of the important ones have now made it out of committee, and they are likely to gain enough Republican support in both the House and the Senate to go to Biden's desk.
1) "The American Choice and Innovation Online Act" . . . would prohibit big platforms from engaging in conduct that advantages their own products or services, or disadvantages other business users, or discriminates among similarly situated business users.
2) ["The Augmenting Compatibility and Competition by Enabling Service Switching, or Access, Act]" requires that the largest internet platforms make it easier for users to transport their data to other platforms and even communicate with users on other platforms.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-facebook-pressure-falls-short-as-major-antitrust-measures-advance-in-house-committee-11624505607?
The second proposal seems particularly intriguing. The primary reason people are reluctant to leave a social media platform like Facebook is because they can't take their followers with them, and they won't be able to communicate with their followers on Facebook after they leave. This makes Facebook like, say, being an AT&T phone service customer--if the only way you could call people on your phone is if they were also an AT&T customer. If you wanted to call someone with a T-Mobile number, you'd need to buy a subscription to T-Mobile, too.
Because you can call anybody on any phone service, so long as you buy phone service from somebody, the phone companies can't hold you captive--because you can take your contacts and their phone numbers with you when you leave for a competing service. To those of you who find common carrier arguments persuasive, this is your solution. If people could still communicate with their Facebook contacts without being a Facebook customer anymore, more people would leave Facebook. It would foster competition.
The devil, however, is in the details. The legislation would give the FTC vast new powers to implement this and both create and enforce arbitrary regulation on a company by company basis. The FTC is an independent agency, whose commissioners can't even be fired by the president. Anybody who thinks that putting unaccountable bureaucrats in charge of our free speech rights on social media is the solution to our problems is completely nuts.
Giving unaccountable bureaucrats new powers to plan industry on an arbitrary basis, like that, is not only authoritarian and socialist but also elitist. The chances of this resulting in free speech and an environment of tolerance for conservative views or controversial statements is practically zero. If you think something like the unaccountability of the Fed, or other bureaucrats, is the solution to our free speech problems, please somebody make the case for that argument rationally. I want to understand your argument.
P.S. We already have a collection of unaccountable people to oversee our free speech rights on social media. There are nine of them on the committee, and they wear robes. Their decisions may seem arbitrary at times, but their decisions on free speech are ultimately guided and constrained by a regulation that explicitly limits the power of government to infringe on our right to free speech.
I have more faith in that group of nine unaccountable people than I do in the unaccountable bureaucrats at the FTC. If the FTC wants to arbitrarily do something that impacts our freedom of speech, they should need to subject their actions to the Supreme Court (and lower courts) for consideration by way of a lawsuit. As it is now, the FTC needs to sue to enforce regulation or base their actions on court approved settlements. Seems to me that's all the power the FTC needs. We can implement this solution without granting the FTC new powers to regulate speech if that's what we want to do.
Up next: All automakers must use interchangeable parts that fit other brands.
I find the common carrier argument persuasive in some cases. Donald Trump doesn't have the right to any particular car unless someone is willing to sell it to him. However, Donald Trump does have the right to own a car, and if the only way he can possibly buy a car is directly from an auto manufacturer--and they're colluding to deny him the right to buy a car from any of them--then doesn't he still have the right to buy a car from one of them regardless of whether they don't want to sell? In fact, aren't they willfully violating his right to own a car?
And when the collusion is directed by elected officials from a certain political party, the whole "muh private company" bit becomes laughable.
then doesn’t he still have the right to buy a car from one of them regardless of whether they don’t want to sell?
No. No one has a right to force an unwilling seller to sell you things.
And here it is where jeff demonstrates once again his complete ignorance of free market ideas.
Collusive behavior in a market is anti-free market Jeff. Maybe you should understand that before piping in with your take.
Look at Jeff dance around the issue of collusion being arranged by elected officials to the advantage of a political party. "muh private cumpany decided to censor newspapers said virologists for their own interests".
So what specifically do you find problematic about "collusion", as opposed to, say, free association of likeminded people?
You actually support corporate collusion directed by elected officials?
Fuck you fascist (and I mean "fascist" literally, not figuratively). Don't ever pretend to be a libertarian here again.
If you have solid, irrefutable proof, that a government agency directly ordered a private company to perform some specific action, that you think is problematic, then let's have it.
But if all you have is politicians bloviating, then that's not the same as a government order. Politicians bloviate all the time and their words are not equivalent to an official government edict.
Lol. Look at how he parses the required standard of proof to be that of having direct messages between 2 entities there is no control of.
Oh look, chemleft is Shifting the Burden of Proof again.
Maybe you should tell us why it was was in Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. interests to block the New York Post's Hunter laptop story. Or why it was in their interests to ban Oxford virologists for discussing the Coronavirus lab leak. Or why it was in their own interests to ban discussion of election fraud.
There was only one entity who had an interest in blocking those discussions and that's your Party.
And the government colluding with the dealers is just fine for fascists like you. Just look at your defense of Twitter as they obey the dictates of the California AG on who to suppress regarding election information.
So what specifically do you find problematic about “collusion”, as opposed to, say, free association of likeminded people?
chemtard admits that Big Tech and the Democrats are in bed with each other, then asks, "what's so wrong with that?"
thats my thinking I don't think i care for any of these proposed laws.
"aimed at taming social media earlier this week"
Totally ignored is the cheapest and most effective method.
Delete the damn app.
The "solutions" they implement will probably impact all activity on social media in the end. I have a number of reasons to think this. Part of it is the dynamic behind things like the actions that brought an end to the studio system and the tobacco industry. Originally, those actions targeted a handful of the biggest players, but, ultimately, the entire industry was impacted by them. The consent decree brought against the tobacco industry to curb their advertising initially targeted five tobacco companies. All 41 of their competitors ultimately felt compelled to sign onto the consent decree.
I also think the major industry players are likely to colonize the regulatory agency in question--and spread the disease to the whole industry in the name of fairness and equal protection. Independent agencies like the NLRB, which is meant to oversee labor law, were colonized by politically sensitive labor unions and wrote the rules for the whole country. Isn't the FCC, another independent agency, largely driven by the concerns of the companies they're supposed to regulate, and doesn't their mandate seem to have grown to incorporate new players and new industries, even, that didn't exist when they were inaugurated?
You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
"...Delete the damn app."
How would ENB write anything?
Delete the app and problem solved, right?
Wrong.
Burying your head in the sand doesn't keep reality - or, in the case of leftist/corporate social media, mass psychosis - from impacting your life.
If you had told me 15 years ago that MySpace or Facebook would be a worrying concern of the government, treated as threat to democracy, and the subject of regulation, I would have thought it sounded hilarious.
Yet, here we are. The Terror of Facebook.
It’s hard for me to believe that this is anything other than an attempt by the government control who gets to publish what on the internet. Consumer protection my ass.
Of course it is. It is a manufactured panic by both Team Blue and Team Red to have a pretext for the state to seize the means of social media distribution, one way or another.
Yes, the side saying "let everyone speak" is definitely really secretly trying to shut other people down.
Another hot take by Jeff.
"manufactured panic"
"Nooo, definitely not political censorship directed by Democratic Party officials. You can trust me, I'm totes impartial. See, I blamed bOth siDes."
If you have solid, irrefutable proof, that a government agency directly ordered a private company to perform some specific action, that you think is problematic, then let’s have it.
But if all you have is politicians bloviating, then that’s not the same as a government order. Politicians bloviate all the time and their words are not equivalent to an official government edict.
Actually that isn't what's out there but you have your head so far up Pelosi's ass you wouldn't know. Keep on being a tool for the totalitarian left.
Are you seriously trying to pretend that the incidents aren't evidence in and of themselves?
You've totally lost control of your narrative, huh. "Hurr-durr, prove that the guy robbing the bank is a bank robber".

You've officially lost it when you consider "picnic" to be "violent language" [link]
However, it is racist language, since it sounds like "pickaninny".
Apparently that list is from Brandeis University in Mass.
They've updated it to remove 'picnic' but are still very wrong about the origins of 'rule of thumb'. Plus, there are other categories now:
https://www.brandeis.edu/parc/accountability/oppressivelanguagelist.html
More Trump lies on the way: Kamala Harris is going to go to El Paso tomorrow to prove that there's no problem at the border and Trump is going to the border next week where he will lie his ass off about there being a problem at the border. And all the usual suspects in the MSM have already written their stories on both trips, so why are either one of them bothering to go?
She picked the city with a big border wall, friendly Democrats, and not part of the crisis. In fact it is 1000 miles from Rio grande valley where most of the crisis is.

“I want to understand White rage. And I’m White.”
Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley offered a forceful rebuke of renewed efforts from GOP Congressmen to question the Defense Department’s diversity efforts and alleged embrace of critical race theory. [Link]
Sounds like Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley needs a new career. Perhaps he can become a professor or join the Klan.
Note the cultural Marxist talking point there--"I want to understand White rage." As if it's wrong to not want to be told it's your fault D'quan ended up in prison for dealing crack is wrong, or the general race eliminationist rhetoric coming from the left over the last 20 years.
Is he? Is he really?
Andrew Yang dropped out of the race to be the Democrat's nominee for president because hardly anybody, anywhere in the country, gave a shit about what Andrew Yang or his stupid ideas.
Andrew Yang conceded in the race to be the Democrat's mayor of New York City for more or less the same reasons. People don't even give a shit about Andrew Yang and his stupid ideas in New York City!
If he doesn't just fade away, let's hope he goes wherever other socialist Democrats go when no one gives a shit about them anymore--some place like Massachusetts, maybe?
In the Massachusetts Democratic primaries of 2020, Elizabeth Warren came in third--in her home state--because very few people give a shit about Elizabeth Warren and her stupid ideas. But just because hardly anyone in Massachusetts cares about Elizabeth Warren's stupid ideas, that doesn't mean she can't be the Senator from Massachusetts.
Massachusetts might be the perfect place for Andrew Yang!
We have AOC. Nobody really cares what AOC thinks either. Eric Adams the anti-defund the police candidate beat AOC's preferred candidate in her own territory.
It really is about crime, isn't it?
Since 80% of males who have been convicted and incarcerated for violent crimes didn't have a father at home during their youth, and since most "gun violence" in America is being committed with illegal guns, Biden's threats against and targeting of legal gun dealers cannot reduce the skyrocketing violence in cities controlled by Democrats (but it is likely to dupe some of the 70 million useful idiots who voted for Biden to vote Democrat again next year).
"Biden has always been a Tough on Crime guy,"
...except when it comes to his son, who has violated numerous laws and he seems to have no issues with it.
Ammon Bundy is running for governor of Idaho on a platform of cutting almost all taxes and ending incarceration for nonviolent crime.
I like what I'm hearing and would like to subscribe to his newsletter.
Doesn't it seem to be the case that they can see Ammon Bundy more objectively, but they can't do the same thing with Trump?
"They" being Reason intern, Ella Lubell, who wrote the blog post about Ammon Bundy yesterday? She left a whole lot out as far as painting a complete picture of Ammon Bundy.
Caw caw!
Look! More evidence of voter fraud!
https://www.aol.com/news/republican-official-ohio-faces-charge-212300279.html
Excuse me, but I think you meant to say that voter fraud never happens, which is why voter ID laws are racist.
I am in favor of voter ID laws.
However, I also believe that if a jurisdiction is going to implement mandatory voter ID, then that jurisdiction should also bend over backwards to help every eligible citizen obtain a voter ID. It isn't enough that voter ID is merely free. Have campaigns to drive people to the ID office to get their ID. Go door-to-door if need be to deliver people their ID. That way, voter ID truly becomes a device to ensure the integrity of the vote, and not instead a barrier to voting itself.
That is, voter ID should not be a barrier to voting itself FOR ELIGIBLE VOTERS.
So you don't believe in voter ID. Just say it.
And it isn't a barrier other than the one you invented in your head. Finding 5 minutes in an entire year to register is such onerous requirements!!!!
Clearer chemjeff: "Black people are too stupid to hold a drivers license or obtain photo ID."
I didn't say anything about the race of anyone. My comments apply to everyone equally. If the government wants to put in place security measures for voting, then it behooves that government to help legitimate voters to navigate the process of voting as much as possible.
Why should obtaining an ID be a barrier to voting for ANY legitimate voter?
"Why should obtaining an ID be a barrier to voting for ANY legitimate voter?"
Obtaining an ID isn't a barrier to voting for ANY legitimate voter. Nobody has a problem getting a legitimate ID.
The only reason anyone would oppose this measure is because they're committing fraud.
How many people are you aware of who are just incapable of getting an ID?
Should ID be a barrier to exercising your Second Amendment rights? Just curious.
Interesting article on the split between Glenn Greenwald/Matt Taibbi and the rest of the media establishment.
https://www.jonathan-cook.net/blog/2021-06-22/greenwald-trump-happened/
The answer is pretty simple--Greenwald and Taibbi are Orwell-type class-focused socialists, while Robinson and the mainstream left are critical theory-based socialists who put race above everything else. Greenwald in particular has been complaining about the security state's relationship with mainstream media outlets, and the latter's willingness to parrot the talking points of the former, for years. Taibbi's class-warrior ethos infuses every word he writes, and unlike his left-liberal colleagues, actually went to several Trump rallies and talked to them directly.
Trump may have been the catalyst, but the split was inevitable.
I think it should be broadened out to include more independent actors, and reframed:
What happened to the media - Trump happened.
That is it in a nutshell. It is a mix of reactionary hatred to someone they both disagreed with and who challenged the DNC establishment (who they have shown they are clearly in lockstep with...Brian Stelter to press sec: "what does the media get wrong, how can we do better?!") and opportunistic behavior to jump on a chance to expand their agenda in response to people's dislike of Trump. An agenda which is more authoritarian, extreme, and farther left by the day.
Then there are a large bucket of people that honestly have many left leanings (Rogan, Tim Poole, Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, Krystal/Sagaar, etc...center left and center right with progressive leanings) and would criticize Trump when they disagreed with him...but they also have a brain and dont regurgitate word for word the DNC talking points as the major networks do. They hear authoritarian leftist stuff, GND, lab leak was NOT POSSIBLE, critical race theory shenanigans, nothing wrong with antifa riots for months burning buildings down, and have to go: "So ya, we were with you on criticizing Trump on some things, and actually have some progressive leanings...but seriously WTF?!"
The only thing that has happened is the media have thrown away any semblance of objectivity or sound reasoning really, and traded it in for DNC talking points. That's all they have. They are the state TV they accused Fox of being under Trump.
Also telling that the above youtubers I named, get significantly more viewership than the pundits on CNN or MSNBC for any single given show. Lemon, Cuomo, Stelter, they on average are getting significantly less people watching than a mildly famous youtuber nowadays. There is a reason for this. The American people can smell bullshit, and they have gone elsewhere. They trust a guy more who has spent his life doing MMA/stand up comedy more than the professionals because for all his lack of knowledge on subjects, he is honest, curious, and willing to listen, change his views, use reason. He (and the others named) isnt a talking head zealot, as the media have become.
Trump broke the media, plain and simple. And the American people by far no longer trust them.
addendum: greenwald isnt really center, but the media is actually making him look more like it
I've heard a lot of 90s liberals complain that they're now considered center-right--not because they changed their views, but because the left went WAY left in the last 20 years.
They trust a guy more who has spent his life doing MMA/stand up comedy more than the professionals because for all his lack of knowledge on subjects, he is honest, curious, and willing to listen, change his views, use reason.
Do you think that "...and he confirms the biases of his audience" plays a role in that too?
No. Not even paid shills like you actually believe that. But hey, you're here to advance a narrative, so look at you "imply".
Well I will confess, I hardly ever use YouTube. But I find it hard to believe that the popularity of some youtubers isn't at all related to that individual confirming the biases of the viewers, if for no other reason than due to the incentives of the revenue model. More viewers = more money so why not tell viewers what they want to hear in order to get more money?
That's because you're an ignorant, obese piece of shit.
...is honest, curious, and willing to listen, change his views, use reason.
We get it. You can't respond appropriately to a discussion of traits that you are incapable of displaying yourself.
What a maroon.
Yes yes. The noble Youtubers are bravely pursuing the truth, unlike those corrupt corporate media shills with thinly disguised partisan viewpoints.
This is just more romanticization of the "common man" and contempt for professional institutions. In essence, just another example of populism run amok.
Have you watched any of Rogan?
Nope
“…and he confirms the biases of his audience” plays a role in that too?”
So you made this claim with zero knowledge to back it up. Very honest of you.
It's a lot easier for wannabe elitists like chemtard to use the genetic fallacy to fit in with his neighbors than actually use reason.
I didn't make a claim. I asked a question. You tell me. Do you think part of his success is because he is confirming the biases of his viewers?
Here’s Lying Jeffy getting caught and turning to sophistry again.
No, it is you lying yet again about what I have done. And you demonstrating yet again that you would rather try to get "zingers" in than discuss anything of substance.
Here, chemtard radical deathfat downtalks YouTube channels he admits that he never watched, then like a typical abusive spouse gaslights R Mac for pointing it out.
Nobody believes that was a sincere question, Lying Jeffy.
The technical director for CNN literally said they spent 4 years making stuff up
Note how the fat fuck parroted his lefty boos' appeal to authority.
Do you think that “…and he confirms the biases of his audience” plays a role in that too?
OK now do MSNBC, CNN, NYT, WAPO. If I had a nickel for every person that follows these religiously that I say "what about those people rioting in Portland for like a year...molotov cocktails in police stations, blacks killing each other in "autonomous" zones, flagrant crime and looting in these dem riots" and they say "what the hell are you talking about?!?! That's not even a thing?!"
Furthermore, my point was people are leaving the BS artists for more sane and reasonable individuals. People with bias go to whatever source they want. But the people I named get millions and millions of listens on spotify, youtube, and other platforms. Despite being on "the mainstream" and getting almost automatic views from anyone that has cable, CNN, MSNBC, and the like are plummeting to views that are similar to a new but barely famous youtuber. They are held up by the billionaires that own them, nothing else.
And even further, no because his opinions and views are all over the fucking map (as applies to many I mentioned). You cant pin him down. He is sometimes for UBI, sometimes considering universal health care, concerned about climate change (but skeptical about govt solutions), sometimes for govt regulations, sometimes for less ridiculous regulations. You know, an actual person who thinks about things and forms an opinion, doesnt regurgitate talking points.
At some point, you are going to realize you are the one on the side of ridiculous zealots, beholden to corporate elites and billionaires, and political narratives, and the people you fight against are actually the ones willing to honestly weigh an issue on its merits.
"Do you think that “…and he confirms the biases of his audience” plays a role in that too?"
That's the entire media audience, is it not?
Interesting poll of Team Red and Team Blue activists.
https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2021/06/24/how-trump-has-redefined-conservatism-poll
Before the 2016 election, Team Red activists labeled people like Jeff Flake and Ben Sasse as "conservative".
However, in 2021, Team Red activists labeled those same senators as "liberal".
What changed? Trump, of course.
So the very definition of "conservative" is now being redefined. The article wants to make the case that "conservative" is being redefined as "loyalty to Trump". But I think a better take is that the word is now being redefined to mean "patriotic populism". Not just populism - otherwise, conservatives would have to contend with the fact that large majorities support some traditionally unconservative ideas, like raising taxes on the rich or banning certain guns - but populism for those who are deemed sufficiently patriotic to have their opinions be deemed "authentically American".
And because Trump is a populist demagogue who wrapped himself in the flag routinely, conservatism is now tending to mean that type of behavior, i.e., flag-draped Real Murican People Power.
Conservatism is constantly being redefined.
For example, the republicans have changed a ton in the last 50 years. Did they ever stop being “conservatives”?
And here we go again.
“Liberal” certainly doesn’t mean what it used to, either.
no, they are still racists.
I'd say that conservatism by its nature changes over time. If I had to define conservatism, I'd say it's to be careful about changing too much too fast because you might lose something valuable without noticing. It's not a certain set of values or principals as much as a deference to the traditions of the culture you are in.
Zeb gets it.
Yes, I'm afraid I'm becoming a bit of a conservative (a very little bit) in my advancing middle age.
What changed is people started to point out their hypocrisy. Most voters, like yourself, live in a state of ignorance. Once their flaws were exposed, people changed their viewpoints on them. You take this to be brainwashing instead of simple elucidation of a candidate's viewpoints.
This is why you're quite frankly an idiot.
By the way, you pointing to leftist push polling is a hilarious way to prove you're not a leftist.
Did YouGov even ask those people in 2016 to describe what a conservative was? Did they ask what Jeff Flake's beliefs were? If not, then the question "is Jeff Flake a conservative" does not mean much.
Jeff not be demeaning but the above take sounds like and "acceptable" racist take on the situation. "Murican" left out as derogatory word for a start might help for folks like myself to no immediately discount some possible valid points.
chemtard lives in a neighborhood of left-wingers and reflexively stands up for them. That's why he got so bent out of shape when people criticized a left-wing pundit for getting ass-blasted about Trump-voting neighbors shoveling snow from her driveway.
When I use the term "Murican", I am not referring to your typical average patriotic American. I am referring to a specific type of American who proudly virtue-signals his extreme patriotism, engages in over-the-top stereotypical American behavior, believes America is the center of the universe, and is proudly ignorant of how every other nation conducts its affairs. They view THEMSELVES as the Only True Patriots. That is what I mean.
Lying Jeffy doesn’t even realize what a bigot he is.
Ignore the leftists redefining riots as peaceful protests, looting as justice and racism as anti-racism. Yep, nothing to see there you lying crap weasel.
“lying crap weasel”
I might have to steal this.
And because Trump is a populist demagogue who wrapped himself in the flag routinely, conservatism is now tending to mean that type of behavior, i.e., flag-draped Real Murican People Power.
Yeah, the neocons never did anything like that in the last 20 years, nor the GOP during the globalist, America-downtalking dystopia of the Reagan era.
>>Still, some on the left inexplicably hoped he might actually be a changed man
projection. and naivety. especially for a political writer geez .
"Still, some on the left inexplicably hoped he might actually be a changed man, caught up in the zeitgeist around criminal justice reform, ending mass incarceration, and giving police fewer opportunities to commit abuse.
That Biden wants to take some of the massive spending approved as pandemic relief and funnel it to cops only shows how sadly mistaken they were."
Cops are the club wielding hands and booted feet without which Biden is but an impotent, old, skinny man like Trump was but an impotent, old, fat man locked in an office thousands of miles away. Of course those in power are rabidly pro-cop, while in power.
Correct i agree this.http://www.swarnprastha.com/
This is an extraordinary (though unsurprising) finding. Most amazing is that the corporate sector of the US media is failing in every respect: financially, culturally, collapsing trust.
Any other industry failing like this would engage in self-critique, asking why. They never do
“The United States ranks last in media trust — at 29% — among 92,000 news consumers surveyed in 46 countries. [Link]”
Like some kind of pathological narcissist, when you show corporate media stars these facts — you inspire more distrust than every media in **46 countries** surveyed — they will insist it’s the fault of those who distrust them: they’re dumb, manipulated, primitive, racist, etc. knowledgekira
