Matt Gaetz Story Shifts From Child Sex Trafficking to Consorting With Sugar Babies

In short order, the scandal surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz (R–Fla.) has gone from alleged child sex trafficking!!! to maybe he took MDMA and paid some adult women for sex. We still don't know all the details, and Gaetz may well turn out to have broken federal law. But it's telling that the focus of the story is already turning from sex trafficking of a minor to what looks, based on the details so far, like consensual activity among adults.

The New York Times originally broke the story of a possible Department of Justice (DOJ) probe into Gaetz by labeling it a "sex trafficking" investigation involving a 17-year-old girl whom the congressman allegedly had sex with and paid to travel with him. The Tuesday report quickly stirred up a journalism and social media frenzy in which Gaetz was roundly condemned as a sick sexual predator.

That may still be the case…but the latest report takes the story in a different direction. In a Thursday Times article on the DOJ probe, Gaetz's alleged relationship with a teen—a charge he denies—has been reduced to a much more minor and speculative role. Like the initial Times story, the new report is filtered through anonymous "people close to the investigation" without official statements or documents.

Whereas the first Times story made allegations involving a 17-year-old seem like the emphasis of the DOJ inquiry, the paper now says that officials are merely looking into the possibility of such a relationship existing, as part of prosecuting another Florida politician, ex-GOP official Joel Greenberg, for multiple crimes including alleged misconduct with the girl.

The bulk of the Times' new allegations against Gaetz involve sexual activity with consenting adults—activity that the paper now suggests is the real focus of the DOJ inquiry. Prosecutors are "focusing on [Gaetz and Greenberg's] involvement with multiple women who were recruited online for sex and received cash payments," the Times says. At the heart of this new narrative is a claim that Gaetz and Greenberg partied with women they met on sugar baby websites.

"Sugar" relationships—often involving wealthier men giving gifts to and/or subsidizing the lifestyles of pretty younger women in exchange for no-strings-attached relationships—and the websites that facilitate these arrangements are not strictly illegal. Like many escort businesses (and informal arrangements for time immemorial), they tend to be framed as "spoiling" and "support" in exchange for "companionship." In reality, sugar relationships tend to run the gamut, from deep connections that span realms to much more transactional exchanges of cash (or luxury items, or travel costs, etc.) in exchange for sexual trysts.

There's a long-standing debate over whether sugar babies are sex workers, and whether such relationships count as prostitution. But the only reason the distinction seems to matter is that it makes some parties involved feel better about themselves to pretend like there's a big difference and—more importantly—can mean the difference between the relationships being criminal or not. (The whole thing really showcases the silly and arbitrary nature of U.S. laws criminalizing sex work…)

In any event, Gaetz—who has denied ever paying for sex—is now accused by the Times of giving money to women with whom he may have done drugs and/or had sex.

The Times has reviewed receipts from Cash App, a mobile payments app, and Apple Pay that show payments from Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg to one of the women, and a payment from Mr. Greenberg to a second woman. The women told their friends that the payments were for sex with the two men, according to two people familiar with the conversations.

In encounters during 2019 and 2020, Mr. Gaetz and Mr. Greenberg instructed the women to meet at certain times and places, often at hotels around Florida, and would tell them the amount of money they were willing to pay, according to the messages and interviews.

One person said that the men also paid in cash, sometimes withdrawn from a hotel ATM.

Some of the men and women took ecstasy, an illegal mood-altering drug, before having sex, including Mr. Gaetz, two people familiar with the encounters said.

The identities of the people feeding the Times these stories seem like a pretty crucial factor in judging their veracity. If others in this story were caught possessing or selling drugs or engaging in prostitution, they would be on the hook for criminal charges themselves and may have an incentive to exaggerate the role of others in exchange for more lenient treatment.

For now, with the information we have, it seems possible that Gaetz and company were purchasing sex and/or drugs from the women, and also possible that there's an alternate explanation for all of this.

None of this should be construed as a defense of Gaetz per se, but it is a defense of due process, not rushing to judgment, and not taking mere investigations into misconduct (or prosecutor tales about them) as absolute truths. Unfortunately, that's a very unpopular position online and in the media.

Even as the narrative around Gaetz morphs into run-of-the-mill-scandal territory, a lot of people (including some folks who purport to be against the drug war and for the bodily autonomy of adult women) are divulging details of his alleged activities with the same level of disgust, urgency, and moral outrage they did over allegations involving minors. It seems that in their glee at having ammunition against Gaetz—a Trump stan and highly visible rising Republican politician—way too many liberals are willing to infantilize adult women and portray drug use and consensual relationships with sex workers as deviant and beyond the pale.

Unfortunately, a lot of stereotypes and misreadings wrt sex work… are being broadcast by our liberal friends because a Republican is at the center of a scandal.

— Tracy Quan (@TracyQuanNYC) April 2, 2021

A slew of other rumors about Gaetz's allegedly unsavory (but not necessarily criminal) behavior and sexual antics have also been making the media and social media rounds.

Meanwhile, the Times is still trying hard to work this story into a sex trafficking framework. While reporting that the FBI stopped questioning the women involved back in January, acknowledging that "no charges have been brought against Mr. Gaetz," and failing to raise any information suggesting that the women involved were forced or coerced, the paper still adds this:

It is not illegal to provide adults with free hotel stays, meals and other gifts, but if prosecutors think they can prove that the payments to the women were for sex, they could accuse Mr. Gaetz of trafficking the women under "force, fraud or coercion." For example, prosecutors have filed trafficking charges against people suspected of providing drugs in exchange for sex because feeding another person's drug habit could be seen as a form of coercion.

It's yet another attempt to negate adult women's agency in service of redefining all sex work as "sex trafficking" and give federal police more domain over the private sex lives of consenting adults.

Over the past decade or so, the funding, political enthusiasm, and public appetite for "stopping sex trafficking" has outpaced the actual supply of such crimes, leading the feds to increasingly test and expand the parameters of what they can get away with in policing under this rubric.

Prostitution itself is not a federal crime, so if the FBI wants to stay involved in the Gaetz case, they have a vested interest in trying to define this as involving force, fraud, or coercion. In order for a federal sex trafficking charge to exist, commercial sex must be accompanied by either one of these elements or the presence of someone under age 18.

Gaetz is a terrible human being, and he should of course be held accountable if he had sex with a minor. But if this is "sex trafficking," then the term has no meaning. https://t.co/PO3PSwENh0 pic.twitter.com/mG0ElgpiIC

— Radley Balko (@radleybalko) April 2, 2021

If no force, fraud, coercion, or minors were involved but Gaetz or Greenberg did pay for sex workers to cross state lines, they could be looking at federal charges under part one of the Mann Act. This is a law frequently used to harass sex workers and their associates and justify FBI surveillance and stings against them—not something to be cheered on just because its target may be someone you don't like.

Gaetz has said that he is aware of the DOJ looking into him but that he is not the target of an investigation, merely a potential witness regarding the alleged activities of Greenberg (who goes on trial for one count of sex trafficking and a wide array of non-sex-related charges this June).

New Mexico is on track to be the latest state to legalize recreational marijuana. From CNN:

Two related pieces of legislation -- one which legalizes recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older in New Mexico and the second which expunges arrest and conviction records for some cannabis offenses -- are heading to the governor's desk after gaining lawmakers' approval.

While much better than the current situation, the legalization bill still criminalizes carrying more than an approved amount of the drug, by setting "limits on how much cannabis, cannabis extract or edibles a person can buy or have outside their home at a time."

Lol. Why is the headline about Goetz on not the appearance of ex DoJ/intelligence officials attempting extortion the focus? Weird choice.

Just a weird story. Could be both guilty and extortion as well. But the extortion angle seems pretty damning. And who am the doj/fbi is leaking to the NYT still? Seems a major abuse of power.

Super weird and totally unexpected that the NYT changes its story after other outlets do some actual journalisming.

Super weird and totally unexpected that ENB equivocates throughout the entire article about Gaetz, instead of just calling out the NYT's bullshit story accusing him of being a child sex predator.

ENB, you hack, can you PLEASE, for a single minute, get some fucking integrity and admit you pounced on a largely unsourced story because you hate Republicans and rush to pile on every bullshit story about them, no matter how outrageous or absurd, and you were personally delighted in painting Gaetz as a child sex predator because it fits your narrative. You consistently back the wrong fucking horse, over and over again, and your takes are hot garbage.

The NYT is never going to hire you, and you're never going to be allowed in the Elite Club. You're the help to them, just another useful idiot peddling their bullshit, and when they're done with you, they'll stuff you wherever the stuffed Cindy Sheehan.

A sex predator is a good character for a man. Most rape should be legalized.

Women should be exploited by men. They should lower the age of consent to no older than 7.

All men in prison for sexual assault of women should be released immediately. Larry Nassar should be pardoned. So should Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, R Kelly and the millions of other guys locked up for rape. All of them should be released and what they did shouldn't be a crime.

Did you read any of what she wrote. She said exactly the opposite: that people who support women’s right to choose sex work should not be jumping on Gaetz for paying for sex just because they don’t like him.

She says almost literally those words.

You should see her twitter where she publicly says the opposite. Linked below.

Way to cherry pick. Odd you didn’t include this quote:

“Even as the narrative around Gaetz morphs into run-of-the-mill-scandal territory, a lot of people (including some folks who purport to be against the drug war and for the bodily autonomy of adult women) are divulging details of his alleged activities with the same level of disgust, urgency, and moral outrage they did over allegations involving minors. “way too many liberals are willing to infantilize adult women and portray drug use and consensual relationships with sex workers as deviant and beyond the pale.”

Right, which is why I said:
“She gets to rant about sex workers, while also disparaging one of her political enemies!”

So I “cherry picked” the part where she disparaged her political enemies because you said she didn’t. Then you “cherry picked” the part where she ranted about sex work.

Which is funny, because I said she did both.

      2. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

Probably because the investigation apparently started under Barr.

        1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

          What investigation though?
Gaetz said he's not under any investigation, just a potential witness, and the rest of the NYT's story seems to be falling to pieces as other papers start looking into it.

        2. JesseAz   4 years ago

So you missed the NYT saying it was an inquiry and not an investigation?

          1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

Ok, seems like a semantic difference, which anyway was started under Barr, and then leaked by NYT. So what supports a story of Biden persecuting an opponent?

            1. JesseAz   4 years ago

It isnt a semantic difference. Sorry you dont know that.

I suppose you just walk around knowing the exact and very important difference between "inquiry" and "investigation" despite having no professional connection to criminal justice? Or are you involved in criminal justice and just lording your knowledge of jargon over laymen? Either way, ooookkkkkkkkk bbbbbuuudddddyyyyy.

"Inquiry and Investigation- The Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) renders a separate and specific definition for both the terms, however owing to their dictionary meaning the two words are often confused and used interchangeably."

Go ahead and lay out exactly what difference between the two is germane to this story. How does the substitution for one word convey different meaning to the laypeople reading than the other word?

The NYT story we are all discussing, and google is your friend.

But here, I can spoon feed the baby:

                    https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-barr-avoided-matt-gaetz-doj-sex-trafficking-investigation-2021-4

                    1. R Mac   4 years ago

“Former Attorney General Bill Barr actively avoided Rep. Matt Gaetz in public while the Justice Department was conducting a sex-trafficking investigation into the Florida representative, Politico reported.”

                      Checks the Politico link:

“Barr and the Office of the Attorney General received multiple briefings on the Gaetz probe, beginning in the summer of 2020, a second person familiar with the probe said. They encouraged Florida prosecutors to move as quickly as they needed to and take whatever steps were appropriate. The briefings were consistent with Barr's memo requiring notification to department leadership on probes of candidates. The briefing was important because — among other reasons — Barr didn't want to accidentally appear anywhere with Gaetz, the person said.”

You keep acting like googling things proves your points. Here’s a hint: you should actually read them, then you won’t look like as much of a dishonest piece of shit.

                      So the investigation,

oh fuck sorry, I almost made a HUGE ERROR THAT WOULD NEGATE THE ENTIRE MEANING,

"inquiry" started under Barr, not Biden, right?

Thank you. I rest my case.

Your post just above shows it isnt semantics dummy.

                  1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

It literally shows that it is semantics. Go look up the word 'semantics'. Unless you explain the difference and how it is meaningful in this context, then we are merely talking semantics and not talking about the underlying topic.

The lay definitions are the same. It is only technical definitions, used only by professionals working in criminal justice where there are still minor differences.

This is the same shit you guys always do. You have lost the main point: Bill Barr started this INQUIRY (happy?), therefor, Biden did not start this as a hit job. That's what we are discussing, which you have apparently no answer to, other than to obsess over 'inquiry' vs 'investigation'.

Call it whatever you want, it does not matter. Or can you explain why it matters, as you have failed to do so far?

It was like Mother’s Lament lately making a big deal over whether Sidney Powell made a legal argument in her own defense, or whether her lawyer made the argument. Yes, technically, her lawyer made the argument, not her — and it doesn’t matter.

You're such a dishonest fuck, it's absolutely amazing.

If a different person says something about you, unless it's known that you have endorsed it, you're not the one who said it.

I'm seeing more of how you think now.
Reality doesn't mean shit to you.
You'll just twist and twist and twist it until you've got something that you can comport with your narrative. "Somebody who works for somebody else said something about the latter, so it's what the latter said".

                    So repugnant, so utterly dishonest.

It is you trying to deflect from the ridiculous arguments that were made, by dwelling on the unimportant detail that a lawyer’s lawyer made the ridiculous arguments rather than the lawyer herself.

It must hurt how stupid her lawyer’s argument makes you and others who bought into her bullshit look.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

The problem is that Atlanta is a major piece in the hub-and-spoke system, and that airport was basically built specifically to support Delta's ops. I suppose they could move those over to Houston or maybe up to Charlotte or Nashville, but the former is already pretty packed and I doubt the latter two have the capacity to support them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they look to move their company HQ if this passes, though.

"How would abortion access in the U.S. change if Roe v. Wade were overturned?"

If the SUPER-PRECEDENT Roe v. Wade gets overturned, this country will literally become The Handmaid's Tale. So we need to support Democratic plans to expand the Supreme Court so that doesn't happen.

    2. Brian   4 years ago

I’ve heard that if the 2A were amended, nothing would change, because it would merely allow states to start banning guns. States like Texas would have nothing to worry about.

Seems like overturning Roe v Wade would be just as unnoticeable.

      1. Bill Godshall   4 years ago

If Democrats truly valued Roe v Wade and women's right to abortion, they would enact Roe v Wade into federal statute (since they now control the White House, House and Senate).

The Democrats had similar windows of opportunity to do the same during the Clinton and Obama administrations, but never did so (and the left wing women's rights activists never lobbied for it).

But if Roe v Wade (or something similar) was enacted into federal law, many women would no longer vote Democrat.

Seems like Democrats want to keep using Roe v Wade as an election issue (to keep women voting Democrat).

        1. Compelled Speechless   4 years ago

It's hilarious that you guys see reputable sources issuing retractions as proof they are not reputable. Retractions are proof they are reputable. It is proof they are trying to get the facts right. Unlike The Federalist, PJ Media, InfoWars, Breitbart, etc. that you guys prefer because they coddle your feelings and don't challenge your preconceptions.

        1. JesseAz   4 years ago

You're defending what you call a reputable new station saying the following:

discredited by U.S. intelligence and independent investigations by news organizations,

Because they later retracted after major blow back? LOL.

          And then you state:
you guys prefer because they coddle your feelings and don’t challenge your preconceptions.

When the only coddling was NPR lying about what news agencies and intelligence agencies actually said.

My god man, do you sense the irony?

The statement originally made was false at face value and it was printed. You are defending this since they later fixed it. LOL.

          1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

Did they lie, as in they knew the truth and then printed something else, or did they receiving information which later turned out to be false?

It's also just a line from a book review. About a familial relationship who has no job in government. So yeah, a non story to begin with. You guys mostly seems upset that no one else gives a shit about Hunter, and are trying to blow this up into some huge issue. Everyone else does not see the importance. It might be important if Joe Biden was a nepotist, like Trump. But it seems he is not. So what?

            >Revised now is a line in the review of the upcoming memoir, Beautiful Things: A Memoir, which details the 51-year-old's battle with drug addiction. Where it once said the laptop story was "discredited by U.S. intelligence and independent investigations by news organizations," has been replaced with a line that says: "Numerous news organizations cast doubt on the credibility of the laptop story."<

or did they receiving information which later turned out to be false?

Fer fuck's sake, other than putting words together in the correct order, verifying news before printing it is their only fucking job. Unverified stories are a) gossip or b) lies. Printing gossip and lies is propaganda, not news. You are decrying people for pointing this out?

There were many intel officials casting doubt. It is easy to see how this is a very simple and frankly non material mistake in one line that is within a fucking book review. It's not like it was a headline. It was a book review. That is what you guys are getting all hyper over.

                1. R Mac   4 years ago

“More than 50 former senior intelligence officials have signed on to a letter outlining their belief that the recent disclosure of emails allegedly belonging to Joe Biden’s son “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”

The first paragraph. “Former”, and “their belief”. “Classic earmarks”.

It’s an article about the opinion of former intelligence agents who admit that they have no evidence to support it.

The ones making the mistake lying was actively trying to discredit the truth, or at least the narrative that is closer to it. They were not interested about the truth. They were interested in pushing another Russian angle knowing it would titillate the anti-Trump crowd and they would accept it without question. That doesn't sound like a mistake.

Who cares what someone's son does if that son is never let near the levers of power. That's why Trump's nepotism was against our norms and generally not a good idea. Nepotism and corruption go hand in hand. The answer is not to examine every politician's every familial relation, but to prevent politicians from hiring their relatives in the first place.

I don't understand the importance of the Gaetz story--other than as a distraction from more important issues.

The Biden administration has agreed to meet with the Iranians to capitulate to their violations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and reinstate their ability to enrich their own uranium on a schedule to be determined later.

The Biden administration is introducing most of the provisions of the Green New deal under the guise of $3.2 trillion spending on infrastructure, and they've threatened to support the Democrats nuking the filibuster if the Republicans try to use it.

. . . but let's talk about this Gaetz guy.

This was the genius of some of Trump's more obnoxious tweets. Whatever attention the media paid to Trump's tweets was more time they didn't spend talking about the more important and controversial things Trump was doing with policy. I wasn't distracted by Trump's tweets then, and I'm not distracted by running some sex scandal up the flagpole now.

It's time to push the panic button on the Biden administration--no matter what's true or false about Gaetz.

    1. JesseAz   4 years ago

Jesse Walker's book about conspiracy theories might tell us that even if the conspiracy theory in question tells us nothing else about what's really happening in the world and why, it tell us something about the people who believe them and are fascinated by them. Some people are apparently really into distracting us with salacious stories!

Like I was saying the other week, when our ideas are grounded in principles, the facts in any particular story don't really matter. It can be against our best interests to invade Iraq--even if Saddam Hussein really were looking for yellowcake in Niger. The principle that we shouldn't go against our interests doesn't change depending on what Saddam Hussein or anyone else does. When we obsess over the facts of these stories, we become beholden to facts that may not really matter.

My ideas about opposing Biden and the Democrats are grounded in principles like liberty, justice, capitalism, America's security interests, etc. None of them hinged on whether Epstein really committed suicide back when Trump was elected, and none of them hinge on whether Gaetz did or didn't do anything today.

Yesterday I made an intentionally ridiculous statement about how we should all support Biden and the Democrats bailing out the states, their plans for gun control, and their Green New Deal--because so and so is perv. ChemJeff picked up on that "logic" with what he thought was a better conclusion--as if the logic itself weren't ridiculously stupid from the get-go--because that's the way these people "think".

The news media is full of shit in all sorts of different ways, and one of the worst is in the way they report unimportant facts as if they were important. For all I know, everything they're reporting about Gaetz is completely false, but even if it all turns out to be true, what difference does it make? Even if we're denouncing moral panics about human trafficking, there isn't anything we should do differently in that regard regardless of whether Gaetz did or didn't do anything. The stupidity of media fed moral panics should be resisted on principle regardless of the facts in any case.

Meanwhile, the things everybody really should be upset about are really happening.

        1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

              It's quite a bit more than that; it's a 90 page document.
              https://democrats.org/where-we-stand/party-platform/

Contrast that to the GOP's single bullet point party platform made only after they were made to be embarrassed about it by the press. And they can't help but put a spite mention in about the press in their already diminutive 'platform'. Say what you will about dems vs GOP, the dems actually do homework. GOP is more into the culture war issues for the last several years than any policy or principle. Look no further than the failure to repeal and replace O-care as an example of the outcome of a lack of a mission statement, essentially.

Here is the entirety of the 2020 GOP platform:

As Adopted by the Republican National CommitteePaid for by the Republican National CommitteeNot Authorized By Any Candidate Or Candidate's Committeewww.gop.com RESOLUTION REGARDING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY PLATFORMWHEREAS, The Republican National Committee (RNC) hassignificantly scaledback the size and scope of the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte due tostrict restrictions on gatherings and meetings, and out of concern for the safety of convention attendees and our hosts; WHEREAS, The RNChas unanimously voted to foregothe Convention Committee on Platform,in appreciation of the fact that it did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within theever-growing Republican movement;WHEREAS, All platforms are snapshots of the historical contexts in which they are born, and parties abide by their policy priorities, rather than their political rhetoric;WHEREAS, The RNC, had the Platform Committee been able to convene in 2020,would haveundoubtedlyunanimously agreed to reassertthe Party’s strong support for President Donald Trump and his Administration;WHEREAS, The media has outrageously misrepresented the implications of the RNCnotadopting anew platform in 2020 and continues to engage in misleading advocacy for the failed policiesof the Obama-BidenAdministration,rather than providing the public with unbiased reporting of facts;andWHEREAS, The RNCenthusiastically supports President Trump and continues to reject the policy positions of the Obama-Biden Administration,as well as those espoused by the DemocraticNational Committee today; therefore,be itRESOLVED, That the Republican Party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda; RESOLVED, That the2020 Republican National Convention will adjourn without adopting a new platformuntil the 2024 Republican National Convention; RESOLVED, That the 2020 Republican National Convention calls on the media to engage in accurate and unbiased reporting, especially as it relates tothe strong support of the RNCfor President Trump and his Administration; andRESOLVED, That anymotion to amend the 2016 Platform or to adopt a new platform, including any motion to suspend the procedures that will allow doing so, will be ruled out of order.

The 2016 GOP platform was about as in-depth as the dems. Went from 65 pages to one page. You can really see, in pure volume of principles and goals generated, how much Trump hollowed out the GOP philosophically.

And what is with your war boner for Iran? Do you think they are gonna nuke us, even if they somehow got one? Don't you want peace?

Instead of alone, and hostile, and with no mechanism to enforce non-enrichment other than yelling on twitter or actual violence.

NSC spokesman Robert Palladino said the most notable Iranian violations of the JCPO involved exceeding limits on heavy water stockpiles in 2016.

"Iran has also regularly pushed the boundaries of the deal, for example failing to meet expectations on its operation of advanced centrifuges, as the president highlighted in his speech on October 13, 2017," he said.

Among the major flaws contained within the JCPOA are the sunset clauses, which have granted Iran an internationally recognized path to nuclear weapons. Under the agreement’s sunset clauses, key restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program expire. For instance, in October 2023, the proscription on manufacturing advanced centrifuges is lifted, which will allow Iran to build centrifuges that enrich uranium at a faster pace than the ones currently in operation.

Beginning in 2026, Iran will be allowed to begin operating these advanced centrifuges. Likewise, Iran will no longer be limited to 5,060 IR-1 centrifuges that it currently uses for enriching uranium and will be able to operate as many of these centrifuges as it wishes. Iran having more centrifuges and ones that are more advanced will only shorten its breakout time to acquiring nuclear weapons.</i?

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency said in its annual report that Iran has a “clandestine” effort to seek illicit nuclear technology and equipment from German companies “at what is, even by international standards, a quantitatively high level.” The findings by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Germany’s equivalent of the FBI, were issued in a 317-page report last week. German Chancellor Angela Merkel underscored the findings in a statement to parliament, saying Iran violated the United Nations Security Council’s anti-missile development regulations. “Iran continued unabated to develop its rocket program in conflict with the relevant provisions of the UN Security Council,” Merkel told the Bundestag.

Ok? What is the incentive for Iran to NOT pursue nukes then? Prohibition does not work in the long run, right, fellow libertarian?

Unless you think the US should try to keep Iran as a virtual prison for all of eternity, we are going to have to do better than unilateral sanctions. A deal will get allies on board for much more powerful sanctions, and will allow incentives for Iran to drop their nuclear ambitions.

What is the alternative? Trump never put anything in place of the deal. Unilateral or weakly multilateral sanctions will not work forever.

Exactly my point. Right now, with no further negotiation, it seems we are bound for war eventually. Israel can keep bombing and assassinating, but do we want to bet on that containing Iran forever?

I really do not get the resistance to diplomacy, and the assumptions that the deal that comes out of new negotiations is going to be the same or worse than the last.

Yes, they violated the original deal and then some. But our allies want us to come back to some sort of deal. So what do we do now? I think simply screaming and pointing at the NPT and asserting that Iran is forever crippled regarding nuclear research simply is not a realistic solution.

Who? If by allies, you mean Europe, then their opinion doesn't really matter. If you mean Israel and the GCC, then you might have a point.

Again, the whole point of the Abraham accords is so these countries can take care of this shit themselves. They shouldn't need us there to jawbone Iran into taking a deal they're going to violate anyway.

"and with no mechanism to enforce non-enrichment other than yelling on twitter or actual violence".

When the US smoked 200,000 people in Japan we were in the infancy of our nuclear weapons programs. At that time, The Iranians were still riding donkeys and carrying bolt action rifles.
We have had 75+ years of constant development and refinement. A single F16 figher jet with modern munitions would end their entire nuclear program in a flash of light in a single pass. A second F16 could turn all of Tehran into a smoking hole.
Now, can you think of any interested parties near Iran that have F16s and a solid nuclear program?

        1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

Yup. Which I think supports my view that a war footing with Iran is not necessary and is counter productive for peace in the region.

We have inadvertently trained all the dictators and tin pot republics out there that the US will invade, unless you have a nuke. We have made nuclear armament the only way to ensure your safety against America, if you perceive America as a threat for whatever reason.

So Tehran has a natural and understandable ambition to attain a nuke. Ken want an all-stick approach that can only eventually lead to war.

I say let's engage in diplomacy, and if Iran does get feisty, just turn our backs and whisper to Israel that we preemptively didn't see nuthin'.

I don't what 'our' involvement in that was, but yes, basically. Seems like the least violent and smartest way to reduce their nuke-making capability. "President Joe Biden has said the U.S. will to return to the deal if Iran comes back into compliance with it. Thus far, Iran has refused to entertain the offer unless the U.S. rescinds sanctions that Trump imposed on it. Iran already rejected an EU proposal for a meeting that included the United States. That proposal came in response to a Biden administration statement that it would accept an invitation to attend such talks.

Meanwhile, the State Department said it had extended a waiver that allows Iraq to continue to buy power from Iran without being subject to U.S. sanctions. penalties. The waiver was renewed for 120 days, an increase in shorter extensions that had become commonplace during the Trump administration."

Yeah, providing shorter waivers than Trump did, and demanding that they come back into compliance with the deal. Sounds like a real free-for-all for Iran.

So tell me how you are convinced that Biden's plan is to let Iran have the bomb.

      1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

"The 2015 deal sought to keep the so-called breakout time Iran would need to amass enough enriched uranium for a single bomb to at least 12 months until at least 2026."

        ----The Wall Street Journal

        https://www.wsj.com/articles/iran-nuclear-deal-participants-including-u-s-to-meet-in-vienna-next-week-11617361429?

That basically gets it right, and that's why Obama's 2015 deal, which Biden wants to return to, is completely unacceptable.

According to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Iran permanently forfeited the right to enrich their own uranium when they violated the treaty. The UN Security Council, with China and Russia's assent, imposed sanctions on the basis of the IAEA's finding that Iran violated the treaty.

If Iran wants the sanctions to go away, they should stop enriching uranium and open themselves up to international inspectors, and they can do that and accept uranium that's already been enriched sufficiently for civilian purposes from their allies any time they want. They have chosen to suffer sanctions instead.

It is in the best interests of American security to keep those sanctions in place until Iran comes back into compliance with the NPT and stops enriching their own uranium.

And everything else is basically irrelevant.

        1. JesseAz   4 years ago

He never understood what the original deal was. He just repeats leftist talking points to defend it. I mean, he actually believes that Biden will force them "into compliance" even though Iran has been violating the agreement since the day it was signed.

          1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

And they violate the terms if there is no deal, too, which was in Ken's very own source. No deal means the Iranians do what they want, we don't talk, and then we bomb them or go to war when they inevitably assert themselves.

What do we have to lose from diplomacy, and what threat is a regional second rate power to us anyway? This feels like Iraq 2.

Do you know the actual situation behind Iraq 1?
The real truth is absolutely ridiculous. That is why they won't release it. The people have a right to know why the US destroyed a country, killed 100,000 people, and spent billions trying to rebuild it afterwards. When they finally release the information, the people responsible will be long dead.
I learned early on that Top Secret information is usually not Top Secret for operational security. It is only so that the American people won't know about the murderous, expensive, and world damaging things that the Pentagon and State Department scumbags engage in. Nobody expects accountability anymore. We should.
If only those entities hired the best and the brightest I would have a bit more faith in them. They don't. For the last 40 years they have been hiring by race and gender quota so they tae what they can get. The test to enter service at the State Department is very difficult. But, since the mid 1980s scores don't matter for certain groups, only the constant attempts at diversity. They chase intelligent, reasonable people away. If you attend a few State Department functions, you will be shocked at the quality of the personel. They are over-entitled, over-paid morons.
We should just break off any and all ties and discussions and get the hell out of the ME, period. The Iranians can either choose to behave or be erased by the Israelis. The Iranians are decades away from producing anything really dangerous to the US. Leave it to the Israelis. They have something to lose in this, we don't.

I wish that enough people would demand the truth. The majority of the politicians do not have the clearance to know. They probably won't even ask.
As stated, when all of the people involved die comfortably in their beds, the story will be declassified and released on page 12 of a few select newspapers.

"He just repeats leftist talking points to defend it. I mean, he actually believes that Biden will force them “into compliance” even though Iran has been violating the agreement since the day it was signed.

Now that Iran forfeited the right to enrich their own uranium--by violating the treaty and enriching uranium in secret--the only way they can come back into compliance with the treaty is to stop enriching any uranium of any concentration forever.

Promising not to do it in secret anymore will not bring them into compliance with the NPT. They must give up enriching their own uranium--period. If they want to buy uranium that has been enriched sufficiently for civilian purposes, the can buy it from the Russians.

If they didn't want to forgo the right to enrich their own uranium for civilian purposes, there was an easy way to avoid that. They could have chosen not to violate the treaty by enriching uranium in secret.

It's like they've been caught red handed, tried for murder, convicted by a jury in a fair trial, and the punishment they were given, life without the ability to enrich their own uranium, was assented to by their own allies. The question at that point isn't whether they should be allowed to enrich their own uranium again--just like if you're convicted of murder and given a life sentence, the question isn't how you legally get out of going to prison.

If they want the sanctions to go away, all they need to do is stop enriching uranium. They would rather suffer those crippling sanctions than stop enriching uranium--presumably because they'd rather have nuclear weapons than a decent standard of living. The solution to that isn't Joe Biden letting them out of the sanctions.

For goodness' sake, they've got a terrorist army in Hezbollah that's used suicide bombings, and they're currently using them and/or the Revolutionary Guard inside the borders of three of their neighbors. Why should we think that capitulating to their nuclear weapons program is the legitimate solution to any problem? The people who supported Obama on this, mostly, just seemed to think they were repudiating Bush Jr. in front of the masses, and the people who are supporting Biden on this, mostly seem to think they're repudiating Trump and his insurrectionist supporters.

They want to let Iran off the hook for nuclear proliferation for the same reason they say trespassing on public property justifies shooting unarmed protesters--i.e., for no good reason.

No, and quit trying to put words in my mouth.

I merely find this part of it to be self-evidently ridiculous and unworkable: "the only way they can come back into compliance with the treaty is to stop enriching any uranium of any concentration forever."

Sure. So Iran can accept either forever sanctions, war, or the loss for all of humanity's continued existence to use nuclear power. Seems untenable, and bound to eventually lead to war.

        2. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

The sanctions are in place, and will be kept in place, until such time that we are satisfied that Iran is complying with the terms of deal. As it is now, we have no leverage over Iran. With a deal, we can continue to sanction, and we get to monitor. We aren't giving up anything in the deal at all. Iran just gains a path out of extreme sanctions for good behavior. I don't see the downside, and I frankly find your fixation on a regional 2nd rate power as baffling, unless I view your criticism through a GOP partisan lens.

          From you link:

"The current stalemate stems from disputes that arose in 2018 when then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal, saying that it should be replaced by a new pact halting all nuclear enrichment in Iran, stopping Iran’s development of nuclear-capable missiles and ending Tehran’s support for militant groups.

Iran responded by exceeding enrichment and research limits in the accord."

So in response to Trump scuttling the deal, Iran enriched more uranium and put more moeny into developing missiles. So what are losing out on by talking with Iran?

It is really bizarre that you present a total lack of diplomacy, essentially a war footing, to be the most logical and libertarian position on this issue. Again, only makes sense if you perceive Trump as infallible, or simply want to criticize Biden for everything.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

I frankly find your fixation on a regional 2nd rate power as baffling, unless I view your criticism through a GOP partisan lens.

Or an historical one. We've been at odds with them over the last 40 years and our alliance system in the region is contingent upon counter-balancing their influence there. That was the whole point of the Abraham Accords, to ensure that beefs between the top GCC nations and Israel didn't take precedence over their mutual concern over not allowing Iran to be the dominant power in the Middle East. The GCC shouldn't have to continue using us as a bodyguard in the Gulf if they have a nuclear power in Israel that will support them when it comes to battling Iran.

            1. De Oppresso Liber   4 years ago

          2. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

You just seem to be flailing, here, as if the NPT didn't exist, wasn't ratified by the Senate, and as if the NPT didn't have provisions that Iran violated. I think it's because you have no idea what you're talking about--other than whatever pundits you read. Why should I bother responding to that? I already spelled it out for you in obvious terms.

You also seem to be completely missing the fact that neither Joe Biden nor Barack Obama have the constitutional authority to arbitrarily alter the NPT or enter into any other treaty without it being ratified by the Senate. Obama's deal with Iran wasn't ratified by the Senate, but you know what deal was?

The correct answer is the original NPT.

Iran forfeited the right to enrich uranium in secret when it signed onto the NPT. Iran forfeited its right to enrich uranium at all when it violated the NPT. The UN Security Council, with China and Russia's consent, imposed the sanctions until Iran comes back into compliance with the treaty. If Iran wants the sanctions to end, all they need to do is stop enriching uranium forever and let the IAEA come in and monitor their compliance.

If let Iran out of the provisions of the NPT because they violated the NPT, then when Iran's enemies in the UAE or Saudi Arabia (both of which are signatories) want their own nuclear weapons because Iran has them, how will we enforce any agreement? Will we just carve out special exemptions for them, too--because Joe Biden says so? Did you know the point of the NPT is to discourage rather than encourage nuclear proliferation?

Your opinion on this is based on not knowing some really basic stuff, and even if you had the facts right, your reasoning is off. You're wrong about this in every way you can be, and all the ways you're wrong seem to mimic Democratic party propaganda rather than reality. It's embarrassing to watch.

Meanwhile, Biden has no constitutional basis upon which to enter into extra treaty provisions with Iran unless he submits that treaty to the Senate--just like Obama didn't have the authority to enter into a treaty with Iran without the U.S. Senate. If Biden really does follow through on this incredibly stupid move, our next president should be able to undo it again--hopefully before it's too late.

As soon as Iran conducts a nuclear test, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will all start pursuing nuclear weapons of their own, and if you think that's in the best interests of the United States--especially in the wake of the Biden administration asserting America as the neocon guarantor of security in the Middle East--then you're a fucking idiot.

The NPT is still in effect. It has never not been. The JCPOA was a deal on top of that, but did not negate it. Repeatedly pointing at the NPT and telling Iran that they have now lost the right to nuclear power forever is not a reasonable solution. The Iranians simply will continue to not comply, eat the sanctions, like they are doing right now. Executive agreements are the norm now, and have been since the 60's at least. President's get into something like 10x more executive agreements than treaties. Very similar to war powers being taken over increasingly by the executive. Do I like that trend? No. But I don't try to use that fact as an excuse when I don't like one of these agreements. So you can argue that Obama and now Biden do not have constitutional authority, and I may agree with you, but neither did Trump for his many executive agreements, (or bush or bush or Obama).

              1. TrickyVic (old school)   4 years ago

The rapid releases ease pressure on the Border Patrol and its badly overcrowded holding facilities but shifts work to Immigration and Customs and Enforcement, the agency that enforces immigration laws within the United States. Families are released with booking records; only parents are photographed and fingerprinted.
The Border Patrol began the unusual practice last week in Texas' Rio Grande Valley, which has seen the biggest increase in the number of migrant families and unaccompanied minors crossing the border. Last week, the agency added instructions to report to an ICE office within 60 days to adults’ booking documents.
But some got no documents at all, including dozens at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in the Texas border city of Mission, where about 100 migrants released by U.S. authorities had been arriving each night to sleep on mats in classrooms in a shuttered elementary school..."

There was one striking exception: Nearly three-quarters of all Americans — including majorities of both parties — said they support laws requiring voters to present photo identification

      1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

I maintain that each state should be free to set their own registration and voting requirements--so long as those rules are consistent with the Constitution, the Fourteenth Amendment, etc.

Federalism as a check on the national government's power is still as important as it ever was, maybe more so now that the federal government has become so powerful, and I see no good reason why the opinion of voters nationally should be more important to the voting laws of Vermont than the opinion of Vermont's voters.

If a majority of Americans nationally don't like the way the people of Vermont govern themselves, then so long as Vermont's laws are in harmony with the U.S. Constitution, the people of Vermont should be free to tell the majority of Americans nationally to go fuck themselves with a jackhammer.

        1. Gray_Jay   4 years ago

So long as they're voting for Vermont offices, sure. Their indifference to fraud starts affecting political offices that affect me---like President and Vice-President---even as a non-Vermont resident, I want to be sure they aren't engaging in wholesale electoral fraud. Substitute California for Vermont to make the point clearer.

          1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

            I disagree.

Whether we're talking about national office or president, the way the state of Vermont decides to count their own votes is the way those votes should be counted.

The problem with the idea that other people should only be free to do things that only affect them is that everything we do (or don't do) may effect someone else in some way.

I give you what is surely among the worst Supreme Court decisions ever: It is okay for the government to prohibit a farmer from growing wheat on his own property for his own use (even if it never leaves his property) because by growing wheat on his own property and using that, he's not buying wheat on the open market. And by not buying wheat on the open market, he's doing something that impacts wheat farmers in other states nationally (interstate commerce).

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wickard_v._Filburn

It isn't that we should be free to do anything so long as it doesn't affect anyone else. Actually, we should be free to do things that harm other people, like open competing businesses across town, selling them large sized sugary soft drinks, and growing wheat on our own property for our own use. The correct principle is that we should be free to do anything we please so long as we don't violate anyone's rights.

            1. IceTrey   4 years ago

So long as we don't violate anyone's liberty. Liberty being freedom from the initiatory use of force. When you say rights that can include positive rights which aren't rights at all.

              1. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

Well, my definition of rights has them as the obligation to respect other people's agency. We're all obligated not to rape people because we're all obligated to respect their agency. Even when we're talking about property rights, we're talking about the obligation we have to respect other people's right to make choices about how their property is used, who gets to use it, if it isn't used at all, etc.

We're not obligated to respect the agency of inanimate objects because they can't make choices, and we're obligated to respect the agency of other people because they can make choices. We're even obligated to respect the agency of people in a coma, infants, and the insane--because we can't really obtain their informed, legitimate consent.

Regardless of how we define rights, however, if the standard is that we can't do things that adversely impact other people in some way, and everything we do or don't do negatively impacts someone in some way, then we may not have the positive right (if there is such a distinction) to do anything. And it isn't just about negatively impacting the national economy with our lack of participation.

Every time you exhale, you may be contributing to climate change and hurting people in some way.

Already, two of Tuvalu’s nine islands are on the verge of going under, the government says, swallowed by sea-rise and coastal erosion. Most of the islands sit barely three metres above sea level, and at its narrowest point, Fongafale stretches just 20m across."

Garvin wrote a negative review of Rebel, which may discourage people from watching it. That would harm Disney's shareholders, advertisers, employees, and vendors, but he didn't violate anyone's rights. He should be perfectly free to harm other people with his bad reviews of their programming--so long as he doesn't violate his obligation to respect their agency. And they're all still free to make choices for themselves about themselves and their own property--regardless of whether Garvin criticizes their TV show.

I'm not pimping anything. I asked a question and gave examples for comparison.

If you want to know what I think, you can ask me. Here, I'll go ahead:
I think vaccine proof is going to be required for much, if not most international travel going forward. I think covid is probably out and about for good now, due to humanity's embarrassing stupidity at the beginning of the break out. I also think that if we went authoritarian on this and required or encouraged vaccination for residents and proof of vax. from anyone entering the country, we could eradicate covid within the US.

Covid will continue to lower life expectancy on earth significantly and be a major drain on resources to treat the sick and prevent breakouts. Ignoring it is one course of action I do not subscribe to.

Sure. But then, we have the debacle over the anthrax vaccine in the 90s as a counterpoint. 2. American Mongrel   4 years ago

Lol, theyre claiming its because of the N word? Maybe it was for calling asians house niggers, but that is offensive for separate reasons than the utterance of the evil incantation on it own.

      PSA for white people:
Nigga used to be something only young trash said as an alternative for shit like brother/a, dog, homie, blood, etc. Nigga was not nor has ever been a synonym of nigger. By the time the use of nigga became commonplace, the meaning of nigger, at least to black folks, had shifted to mean something far more offensive than "black person". Back in the 80s black people used to use nigger like white people use redneck and hillbilly. By the late 90s, early 00s, nigga had basically replaced dude, guy, motherfucker amongst a subset of uncultured blacks. Amongst black people, if you heard the word nigger, it most certainly did not mean black person, it meant the person using it really hates black people and wants to make sure I know it. (Or theyre really old and dont give a fuck about social norms).
If a black person gives you shit for saying nigga, its probably they don't think anyone should use the word, a power play, or because you seem like a small r racist that thinks they can get away with calling people nigger by replacing the er with a. If you speak like eminem, and are amongst the type of person who use "nigga" themselves in general conversation, they wont give a shit if you say it.
      Secondary PSA for white people:
Only about 20% of blacks find using the term nigga acceptable. We think that shit is low class. Rappers and screenwriters are not a realistic window into the black community.

The age of consent should be 7. No older than that.

Let's face it guys, those little girl are already growing curves at that age. Creepy old dudes are starting at your little daughter in the store parking lot in the summer when she's that age. It should be legal and socially accepted and ubiquitous for him and her to meet up.

And I'm 100% sure that Facebook and Twitter swung into immediate action, blocking the New York Times story and shutting down their accounts.

I would like to see Roe overturned. It would send the abortion question back to the states where it belongs. Let the State Legislatures directly address the abortion question. That is where the question belongs, not in article III courts.

I agree. It appears the left only believes in pro choice when it applies to murdering children, but everyone else is gonna get the jab whether they want it or not.

      1. Compelled Speechless   4 years ago

It depends on who's murdering the children. If they register as a republican it's "kids in forceps". If they love the D, it's "fetal appropriation and hug facilities."

          Right.

If Trump was still president the headline would be concentration camps are expanding to convention centers.

So abortion is freely available as long as you can get to a state where it's legal, and also, whether you survive to birth depends on which state your would-be mother happens to live.

I think you put too much faith in the utility of states' rights.

      1. TrickyVic (old school)   4 years ago

It's legal in all states. But some states come with restrictions.

Reason articles usually clarify existing coverage by offering an alternate interpretation of the facts. This article is an exception.

Reality: Gaetz is a subject of an inquiry. We don't know the exent of the inquiry or what specifically they are finding. We know that he has been accused of taking a 17 year old on a trip for sexual purposes, which, if true, would appear to be a crime.

NYT: Unnamed sources say they are also looking into payments to (presumably adult) women in addition to the 17 year old, but no charges have been brought and what potential criminal exposure this would bring isn't clear. It then goes into way too much speculation that boils down to "if (bunch of circumstances we have no way of knowing) then it could be a federal crime!"

Reason: Basically the same as the above, but trying to dunk on NYT and replacing the end speculation with other speculation that boils down to "If (not a bunch of circumstances we have no way of knowing) it wouldn't be a federal crime!"

A better treatment would be to more explicitly separate the charges against Greenberg and the coverage of the accusations against Gaetz.

They should lower the legal age of consent to no older than 7 or better yet repeal all age of consent laws and completely decriminalize adult with child sexual interaction.

Add another psychopathic heiress to the ash-heap of terrible Republicans. Prancing around Congress like it was an extended frat party.

Your friends are embarrassing this country. You are embarrassing. It is painful to have to share categories with you.

"Soon after he arrived in Congress, Gaetz became the only lawmaker in Washington to vote against a 2017 bill giving the federal government more power and resources to fight human trafficking."

Sex trafficking should be legalized. They should repeal US Code 18 subsection 2423. Sex tourism to visit children in foreign places for intimate relationship contact should be not only legal but widely advertised in mainstream travel publications (Conde Nast, etc.).
