Anthony Fauci Says Americans Might Still Need To Wear Masks in 2022
Plus: Yet another Big Tech hearing, Gov. Ron DeSantis did what now, and more...

Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser and part of the federal government's COVID-19 response team, struck an overly cautious note during interviews over the weekend, telling CNN's Dana Bash that Americans might have to wear masks in 2022.
"I want [COVID-19 cases] to keep going down to a baseline that's so low there is virtually no threat," said Fauci. "If you combine getting most of the people in the country vaccinated with getting the level of virus in the community very, very low, then I believe you're going to be able to say, for the most part, we don't necessarily have to wear masks."
Fauci expressed cautious optimism that the country "will be approaching a significant degree of normality" by the end of this year. When pressed by Bash to define what he meant by "normality," the doctor demurred.
"I can't say that, Dana," said Fauci. "Because then it will be a sound bite that's not true. I'm saying: We don't know."
Fauci has admitted that he has previously avoided telling people the plain truth about how long it would take to reach herd immunity because he thought the public wasn't ready to hear it; thus it's not always totally clear whether the doctor's pronouncements reflect genuine uncertainty, public messaging considerations, or a mixture of both.
The strategy currently employed by both Fauci and the rest of the Biden administration seems to be to lower expectations, even at the risk of vastly underselling the vaccine. Government officials have declined to state authoritatively when normal life will resume, and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has emphasized the necessity of social distancing and masking even post-vaccination. She also backpedaled on a key administration promise to reopen schools within the first hundred days of Biden's presidency, instead settling for half of all public schools open just one day a week.
This is frustrating. While it's true that the government can't accurately predict the specific day that Normalcy Broadly Defined will resume—and that normalcy will look different, for various people, depending on their circumstances—warning everyone about the need to continue social distancing for the rest of the year is excessively pessimistic. The latest evidence suggests that the vaccines don't just prevent deaths and eliminate severe symptoms: It is likely that they significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19. New virus variants are a concern, but cases are plummeting nationwide, and the death toll should decline precipitously as the most at-risk population—the very elderly—continues to become vaccinated.
The government should urge everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, because vaccinated people are overwhelmingly safe from the disease—and are also much less likely to spread it to others. The message should be that vaccination is both a protective shield and a ticket back to speedy normalcy. People who are vaccinated can start doing normal things with other vaccinated people: They can go to weddings, restaurants, and grandparent hug-a-thons. Keep that mask handy for 2022 is a really demoralizing and unnecessary framing.

"Under the guise of racial progress, Smith College has created a racially hostile environment in which individual acts of discrimination and hostility flourish," Jodi Shaw, a former administrator at the college, said in a resignation letter. "In this environment, people's worth as human beings, and the degree to which they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, is determined by the color of their skin. It is an environment in which dissenting from the new critical race orthodoxy—or even failing to swear fealty to it like some kind of McCarthy-era loyalty oath—is grounds for public humiliation and professional retaliation."

Congress intends to hold yet another hearing on the Big Tech menace, summoning Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to Washington, D.C., on March 25.
"Whether it be falsehoods about the COVID-19 vaccine or debunked claims of election fraud, these online platforms have allowed misinformation to spread, intensifying national crises with real-life, grim consequences for public health and safety," said the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which will host the hearing, in a statement.
Past iterations of these hearings have not exactly inspired confidence in political leaders' tech savviness.

• The Nation: "West Coast States' Failure to Reopen Schools Is a Disaster."
• In a survey of 1,000 Trump voters, the majority said the Republican Party should become more loyal to the former president, not less—even if this means losing the support of establishment Republicans.
• San Francisco School Board President Gabriela Lopez has finally called a halt to the district's renaming initiative, which was criticized for taking precedent over efforts to actually reopen schools:
We are deeply grateful for the work of the renaming committee and many schools are as well. They are excited about the opportunity to uplift communities that have previously been underrepresented. Our students need to attend schools where they feel valued and seen. This work is anti-racist and we're proud of that.
But reopening will be our only focus until our children and young people are back in schools. We're canceling renaming committee meetings for the time being. We will be revising our plans to run a more deliberative process moving forward, which includes engaging historians at nearby universities to help.
In the meantime, this is the last time I'll comment publicly on renaming until schools are reopened.

...struck an overly cautious note during interviews over the weekend, telling CNN's Dana Bash that Americans might have to wear masks in 2022.
Someone likes the limelight.
There is no logical reason for Americans to ever stop wearing masks.
The legal requirement to wear mask should go away. The social rules to wear a mask won't go away any time soon. You can bitch about the government all you want, but you can't change society if it doesn't want to change.
How does one enforce social rules? Threats of violence?
Mean Tweets?
Sounds like Fauci wants to stay employed for as long as he can in this position.
He's worked there for over 20 years dumbfuck.
Employed, not worked.
Dr. Fauci was originally hired by Ronald Reagan, and, except for his brief time out since Trump fired him (Fauci was re-hired by Joe Biden when he was elected POTUS in November of 2020.), he's been working for the White House ever since.
If we have to continue wearing masks when we go out in public for quite sometime, so be it. The purpose of wearing masks in public and social distancing during the pandemic is to slow down and control the spread of disease.
The purpose of wearing masks in public and social distancing during the pandemic is to slow down and control the spread of disease.
Based on the real, actual data, it's completely failed to do that.
You're an idiot. Natural selection should deal with people who still believe this shit.
There is a difference between government and society. So sorry you never knew this.
Who enforces the rule that you don't cut in line in front of old ladies? Hint: It's not the government.
"Who enforces the rule that you don’t cut in line in front of old ladies?"
Considering the vaccine rollout, no one. Government is doing the cutting in fact you fucking moron.
Dirty looks. I got at least one coughing in a parking lot while mask-less.
Except that no one wanted to wear the masks in the first place - so the government had to force the issue. Hence government changed society.
Wrong. People started wearing masks before the government rules to wear them started. In my area many Asian females were already wearing masks due to memories of SARS in Asia a decade ago. It was so common there were jokes about it.
Eat a bullet, Karen
Get raped.
Die of COVID.
This is true (sadly to my mind). In my state there was no general mask mandate until fairly recently (fuck you Sununu) and many, perhaps most, people were wearing masks. A good number were even before Fauci, etc. changed their tune on masks.
At the end of every private company trespassing you for not wearing a mask is a cop with a gun. If government hadn't agreed, masks would have gone nowhere. So your formulation is a bit naive and incomplete.
It was not intended to be a complete assessment of the situation, just an observation. I never said it would have happened just like it has without government intervention. Of course it wouldn't have gotten this bad without the government and media pushing excessive doom and bullshit about masks.
But many people did start wearing masks before the official guidance changed from "don't wear masks".
Here, in one of the conservative strongholds of Oregon, we probably had about 70% of the population wearing masks in businesses before they were mandated. Note: by "conservative" I mean that just about two-thirds of the voters voted for Republicans in the last two presidential elections.
All the nursing homes, assisted-living facilities were "sealed up" well before Her Governorship told them to do so. Most businesses, most notably the supermarkets, set aside hours in each day where they asked only folks in at-risk groups to shop.
It shouldn't be surprising that most folks will voluntarily take measures to protect themselves or others, with or without government pressure.
Except Fauci is now undercutting any reason to get a vaccine.
If NOTHING changes if I get the vaccine...why the hell would I ever get the vaccine?
Just like there seems to be no reason for A. Fauci to stop blabbering on and on and on with an endless stream of convoluted and much of the time contradictory nonsense. Has Hollywood started casting him in cameo roles yet?
It harms our breathing, and therefore our physical and mental health. Is that a good enough reason?
A million dollar prize didnt shame Fauci either.
And those goal posts keep rollin' rollin' rollin'...
Ah, but he didn't say How Many masks! I think 6 masks, layered criss-cross, could be a bi-partisan solution.
It'll create lots of jobs: Thousands of new hires to manufacture all the needed masks, and millions of Mask Police hires, to arrest or ticket the people wearing 5 or less masks!
All those mask making jobs will be in China though, just like the solar panel jobs.

I am done with the retard masks. We can’t continue on like this.
Your granddad saved the world from the Nazis. Your great granddad saved it from the Hun. And you're bitching about a mask? Jeepers cripes, grow a backbone.
Do you often preen for things? That's all masks are, is preening.
You mean the same thing that didn't stop 600,000 people from dying of the flu 100 years ago?
Your assumptions are incorrect.
Now think about what those granddads and many others did: the deliberately went into harms way with some expectation of injury and death. And think of what the public did, say in London: they carried on in defiance of danger.
Now think about how we are supposed to behave: stay away from people, wear masks that are as much symbolic as effective, and generally cower in fear.
Do you really think the 'Hun' (or Central Powers) were an evil the world needed to be saved from? If so, you should go look up some history of WW1 - its not the same type of conflict of 'good vs evil' that WW2 was.
And even WW2 wasn't really that - we're talking choosing between Nazis who murdered people on a massive scale and Communists who were doing the same thing and then went on to murder so many it made the Nazis look like pikers.
There was a reason Churchill referred to the alliance with Stalin as a "deal with the devil". It may have been necessary, but it had extremely negative results for decades.
He said he's done with masked retards.
So you can leave now.
They didn't beat the Nazis and the Hun just so that fascism and Prussian regimentation could be forced on us by our own gummint.
CONFORM, BITCH!!!
"It's only a yellow star on your shirt. Why bitch about THAT?"
Come on now! Masks are a mandatory thing when people go out in public for a good, legitimate reason: The Covid-19 virus is extremely deadly, and contagious, especially the newer variants that have been cropping up. Masks work at helping to control and slow down the spread of disease. They may not be the most comfortable thing in the world, but they must be worn out in public, nonetheless. When enough people are vaccinated against Covid-19, maybe it won't be necessary to wear masks when people go out in public and social distance any longer, but right now, abiding by the rules for mask wearing and social distancing are necessary.
Poe's law? Who knows?
Just to be safe...Fuck off, slaver.
"The Covid-19 virus is extremely deadly..."
A mortality rate of around 0.2% is "extremely deadly" in your world?
The thing is that the masks are not nearly as big a deal as the social distancing requirements. Those are a threat to the way of life of non shut-ins. Social distancing is the threat to sports, concerts, all shows, large gatherings, etc., not the masks, although those suck too.
When pressed by Bash to define what he meant by "normality," the doctor demurred.
The new normality of complete risk aversion at the cost of almost certain economic and mental health collapse.
Normality to him is getting to stay a celebrity. He’s never going to let this fame go. He’ll have us wearing masks until his dying day if there’s even a chance of another fawning “Saturday night live” sketch.
With any luck his dying day will be tomorrow
Let somebody else go back and strangle baby Hitler. I would go back and hold a pillow over a young Fauci. It's just a big, thick mask, you crybaby!
Well, hopefully they bury that twit with his mask on, soon.
The new normality of complete risk aversion at the cost of almost certain economic and mental health collapse.
The very definition of Faucism.
The very definition of Faucism.
and the price of feminizing our culture...
But with the achievement of complete submission to enlightened authority!
It's weird that the risk aversion focuses so intently on this one thing. The risk of mental illness is not only real, it's greater than the risk from Covid. Why does Covid get the top spot?
The new normality of complete risk aversion at the cost of almost certain economic and mental health collapse.
Nothing new here. Risk denial (eg this is just the flu) is the same thing as risk aversion. Just based on ignorance rather ignorance.
god dammit you're fucking stupid over this flu
Yeah I suppose - OTOH - I actually made a projection almost exactly one year ago
Same infection rate for covid19 (it is actually about twice as contagious as seasonal flu) would mean about 250,000-350,000 deaths among the young/healthy plus maybe double that (400k-600k) among the over-65’s. At the low end that would mean 6 million or so hospitalizations (the US has roughly 1 million hospital beds).
Of course it hasn’t hit here. It hasn’t even hit China outside Hubei province like seasonal flu – yet at least. It may still hit hard in China this season but they are now making all the data up so we’ll never know until the peasants pick up pitchforks. It won’t hit the US until next fall/winter.
A year ago, you were busy ignoring it. And it made some sense to ignore it then on a day when there were 14 confirmed case and zero deaths. Maybe it is just the flu.
A year later? You and your ilk are still stuck on the same determination of what the disease is - which has now become stuck on stupid. My number? A bit high but really quite eerily accurate. And I can now have a legitimate discussion about whether the measures we took this year to contain the contagion are fundamentally different in effectiveness from the measures taken in 1918, whether we've reached a point where this tips from pandemic to endemic because of herd immunity. But not with you and your ilk because you people are still - STUCK ON STUPID.
"Yeah I suppose – OTOH – I actually made a projection almost exactly one year ago"
You made far more than one you scattershot mostly wrong fuck.
Pepperidge Farms remembers all his pant shitting
Yeah, he made that prediction when it was being touted as nothing, which it was and is.
He sure didn't break out his April or May predictions, but I'm sure that was just an oversight.
No actually I made TWO. One was a couple days after the one above and was roughly 100k higher deaths. Mostly I did not think there would be much in the way of masking/containment by autumn so the initial fall/winter wave would hit hospital capacity early.
Everything else has been a comment on SOMEONE ELSE'S projection. NONE of which you people have ever remotely understood. Or can understand. Because to you clowns the only thing to understand is how to rearrange the words - is flu This the just.
Stupidest. people. ever.
Even when I have commented on others projections - eg April 2020 when my comments end up on the low side of reality, the only thing you morons can remember is what YOU said then - when you were wrong. And golly is flu This the just.
remember you revising your numbers over and over so stop the crowing
And in the best con-artist tradition, then made about a dozen more, all different.
Thanks Nostradumbass.
Are you just counting all of eternity until you hit your numbers? LOL.
"My number? A bit high but really quite eerily accurate."
Your numbers "250,000-350,000 deaths among the young/healthy plus maybe double that (400k-600k) among the over-65’s" are no more "a bit high" than the Titanic had a slight problem staying afloat.
Your numbers overestimated deaths of young/healthy by factors well into the double digits. And the elderly by quite a bit as well.
Your numbers overestimated deaths of young/healthy by factors well into the double digits.
My projections occurred BEFORE any medical system anywhere had discovered treatment protocols that worked. eg Dexamethasone was found to greatly reduce mortality in the very seriously ill - peer-reviewed by JULY - and mostly effective in the younger seriously ill.
None of that is really a surprise. Nor should any of it be projected as what will likely happen. Nor does any of it change the fundamental nature of the virus itself - or affect the mortality of the virus when/if hospital capacity is overloaded.
I understand that. You don't. All you're doing is trying to play gotcha with stuff YOU HAVE DELIBERATELY SPENT A YEAR IGNORING. You are still an idiot because you now have a year of practice at it
It's no longer denial once gramma and grampa, your neighbor with cancer, and most medical professionals have been vaccinated. At that point, you've protected the 90% or so of the population that are likely to die, so then you're starting to worry about noise in the numbers (sucks to be the unlucky one, I know, but there is no such thing as a completely riskfree life.)
But once public discussion is in the realm of the ignorant, it remains there. Like it or not, those in denial did not lead the US towards vaccinating the vulnerable. They are busy sticking zinc up their nose and protesting masks and protesting protest. Once the vulnerable are vaccinated, they'll go on to something else stupid. Those who saw masks as a generic instrument of bureaucratic or pajama class control will go on to something else stupid.
Basically the willfully stupid/venal/corrupt/whatever are defining the agenda here. Trying to understand actual 'risk' - who gives a damn.
Ug.....
Sad, but true!
"protesting protest."
...so the entire Democrat Party?
Every one of these folks need to read "When and How We Should “Trust the Science”" over on Cato today and take it to heart. Of course, none of these things is going to happen, and the chatter will go on.
Meantime, I'm starting a pool about when the public decides this is done. My money is that around Independence Day (2021) people are just going to start ignoring mask requirements, travel restrictions, social distancing, etc.
I’d like to think that we’re getting closer. As soon as some non deplorables start making noise, it’ll fold like a cheap chair.
For example; the university of Michigan hoops team (#3 in the country) recently took over 3 weeks off for covid protocol. Not a single member of the program, including staff, tested positive.
Why does Fauci and jfree wanna stunt the potentially lucrative careers of these athletes? After all, this disproportionately affects people of color! (Hey, it’s kinda fun to say that! Haha.)
Make it racial and it’s all over. Have we learned nothing?

NBC News put out a hit piece on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R–Fla.) that criticized him for…vaccinating elderly Holocaust survivors.
How many progressive wine moms do you think were furious after hearing that report without considering why?
Have no idea. You, on the other hand, have contemplated your belly button and therefore think you know.
Really living up to that title if resident 12 year old. Explains so much.
Sounds like the same methodology you used when arguing that a Capitol cop was killed by a mob.
He most certainly was. That it was from being hit with a fire extinguisher has been shown to not be as certain as originally reported, but it is highly unlikely he simply died by coincidence after battling a violent mob that day. It is reprehensible how right-wingers here are dismissive, even joking around about, his death.
That's a lot of words just to admit you were lying for weeks.
This post is all conjecture.
One wonders how the entire Capitol Police department didn't fall over dead from "battling a violent mobs" all summer, much less a bunch of blue-collar white people.
Because, unlike Sicknick, they didn't get hit in the head just the right way or pepper sprayed in just the right way, to trigger a stroke. We'll get the final investigation report at some point.
"Because, unlike Sicknick, they didn’t get hit in the head just the right way or pepper sprayed in just the right way,"
Still lying.
See if he notices that on the day of the Capitol riots the cops were castigated for using pepper spray in doors, shhhh. He doesn't realize the cops did that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Sicknick
"[Sicknick] initially texted his brother later that night, reporting that he had been twice attacked with pepper spray"
But grasp away at straws, dude.
So you're saying the cop's own pepper spray gave him a stroke?
Seems pretty flimsy even if it does exonerate the protesters.
“[Sicknick] initially texted his brother later that night, reporting that he had been twice attacked with pepper spray”
& based on other sources, went on to say he was feeling fine.
There were hundreds of injuries to cops during the BLM riots dummy.
What in the world does that have to do with the Capitol MAGA riot?
Woah! What happened to "insurrection"? No fifty-cents for you if you fall off the narrative.
It shows your hypocrisy.
Because, unlike Sicknick, they didn’t get hit in the head just the right way or pepper sprayed in just the right way, to trigger a stroke.
More conjecture.
We’ll get the final investigation report at some point.
You should probably shut the fuck up until it is, and stop making shit up like you've been doing.
That is a weaselly turn of phrase that would make Sir Humphrey blush.
It is accurate. Several right-wing commenters here have construed the coroner's observations about no external signs of blunt force trauma to mean more than it does. Sicknick's injuries were to his brain.
"have construed the coroner’s observations about no external signs of blunt force trauma to mean more than it does."
Oh god he's going with "the coroner was wrong"
Let me help.
He wasn't even hit. Ever. You lied. It has nothing to do with the coroner.
How can the coroner be wrong, when the coroner is still investigating and has not made a report?
Let's look at what the much-vaunted CNN news article actually says:
https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/02/politics/brian-sicknick-charges/index.html
"To date, little information has been shared publicly about the circumstances of the death of the 13-year veteran of the police force, including any findings from an autopsy that was conducted by DC's medical examiner."
Sicknick didn't simply die the "SAME MONTH" as the riots. He collapsed at the police station.
"In a statement the day after the insurrection, Capitol Police said that Sicknick had been 'injured while physically engaging with protesters' and collapsed as a result of his injuries sometime after returning to his office. He died the next day in a local hospital."
"According to one law enforcement official":
"According to one law enforcement official, medical examiners did not find signs that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma, so investigators believe that early reports that he was fatally struck by a fire extinguisher are not true."
The original New York Times articles cited two unnamed law enforcement officials that said he was struck by a fire extinguisher. Right-wingers here have always jumped on any New York Times article that cites anonymous sources, but now they are 100% believing the anonymous source that says Sicknick was not hit by a fire extinguisher because that's what they want to hear -- except that's not even what the anonymous source said: the anonymous source said only "medical examiners did not find signs that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma".
"including any findings from an autopsy that was conducted by DC’s medical examiner."
Why would the autopsy be kept secret if it matched your narrative?
Let's look at a Fox News article from a week after the CNN report:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/sicknick-case-still-open-but-prosecutors-stymied-in-filing-homicide-charges-so-far
"No cause of death has been given and it is unclear if the blow to Sicknick's head, exposure to chemical irritants during the melee, or something else ultimately contributed to his death."
"The FBI and U.S. Capitol Police continue to comb through tips related to Sicknick’s death and are soliciting more every day."
So, get outta here with any claims that the "coroner was wrong". The coroner hasn't said anything.
So, get outta here with any claims that the “coroner was wrong”. The coroner hasn’t said anything.
So shut the fuck up until he does.
I’m not the one who keeps bringing it up.
You're the one who keeps making unsubstantiated claims, so shut the fuck up until he does.
So why were you telling us all that his skull was caved in by a fire extinguisher?
But in America, nobody listens to the Coroner. If they did, Ferguson wouldn't have burned and there would be no "Saint George Floyd" murals. Just a dead thug, and a dead OD'd Junkie.
That’s supposed to be a gotcha against me, I suppose. Except I did listen to what the George Floyd coroner’s report said.
Yeah! And the coroner was probably a Trump supporter!
No, those you call right wing conservatives used the same words from his family that occurred the weekend after the riots where they said there was no injury. There is a reason many of us knew he died of a stroke early while you kept the fire extinguisher death conspiracy alive.
"words from his family"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Sicknick
"His brother also said that 'apparently he collapsed in the Capitol and they resuscitated him using CPR'."
Yeah, right. That sure sounds like his brother saying there was no injury.
What violent mob? Even the New York Times and CNN are grudgingly admitting that it wasn't violent at all.

You're an idiot - people joke about death all the time. In fact, those who see a lot of death tend to joke about it more than those who don't. It's a release valve and has no bearing on their political/policy beliefs on other things.
IE - even if it's a bad joke and in poor taste at the wrong time, doesn't mean the joke teller hates law enforcement or whatever else you think it means. It only means it was a bad joke, told in poor taste....etc..etc..etc..

"That it was from being hit with a fire extinguisher has been shown to not be as certain as originally reported"
He texted his brother that night. You'd think he'd have mentioned that. He did mention tear gas...and the protesters did not bring those.
Fuck, he’s right about our supporters… time to redirect. I’ll accuse him of the same thing but without a reason as to why.
Lol, what the hell. How does one even respond to that kind of callow retort?

You could say, “You are right. I’m just picturing a bunch of Karens responding that way because I don’t like Karen’s. But I don’t actually have any evidence that what I’m picturing in my mind has basis in reality. I sure love my narratives, though!”
So Mother's upset you and you were lying about the fire extinguisher so you lost your mind

Progressive Wine Mom really hits too close to home with you, huh?
Thank's to Fat Mike's Drug Habit's keen observation, I now realize that I'm in fact the one living rent free in your head, not the other way around.
It goes both ways. You refer to me all the time when I'm not present. Also, many, many times I've seen you arguing against some other person, and claiming it's a White Knight sock puppet.
Because it almost always is. You're really not as tricky as you imagine.
"You refer to me all the time when I’m not present."
Yes, dog shit smells. Remarking on it isn't and endorsement of dog shit.
Neera Tanden's nomination as Joe Biden's Director of the Office of Management and Budget appears to be dead in the water now that both Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Susan Collins have publicly stated they'll vote against her. This would be good news if the reason she were being opposed was because she's a socialist scumbag and a political hack from the Center for American Progress. Unfortunately, the reason her nomination is being shot down is because she made statements on Twitter that were downright Trumpian in tone.
"On November 30, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden announced that Tanden would be his nominee for Director of the Office of Management and Budget.[40] Immediately following the announcement, Tanden deleted over 1,000 of her previous tweets,[41] and changed her Twitter bio from "progressive" to "liberal."[42] During the confirmation hearing, Tanden apologized for several of her tweets attacking Republican senators, including tweets calling Susan Collins "the worst", comparing Ted Cruz to vampires and Lord Voldemort, and using the nickname "Moscow Mitch" for Mitch McConnell.[43] Senator John Cornyn described Tanden as "radioactive" in contrast to other Biden nominees he felt were more acceptable,[44] while Senator John Kennedy stated that she "called Senator Sanders everything but an ignorant slut."[45][46]
----Neera Tanden
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neera_Tanden#Office_of_Management_and_Budget_nomination
She's a disgraceful apologist for for progressive authoritarianism and socialism, but she's being cancelled for what she wrote on Twitter--and no one should cheer that. Still, I can't help but feel pretty good about seeing a Twitter mob leader pay the price for being a shithead, but intellectually, being guilty of calling Bernie, "Sanders everything but an ignorant slut" shouldn't disqualify you from public office.
She made her bed, and watching her lie in it looks good on her. Intellectually speaking, however, those of us who really believe in free speech and could separate the difference between Trump's tweets and Trump's policies shouldn't celebrate over this. Progressives might want to get it in their heads, however, that the cancel culture sword cuts more than one way. To paraphrase Thatcher, the problem with [cancel culture] is that you eventually run out of other people [to ruin].
Romney will break giving her 50.
He wants to be the new maverick.
Only if she is in one of his binders of women.
Eh, Romney's now publicly declared his opposition to her. I think he'll hold.
I don't know. She might've said something bad once or twice about Trump. That might just win him over.
She was always going to be the loss leader.
People who want high appointed positions in the government should probably refrain from publicly calling a large portion of the members of the approving body insulating names.
Putin has never been on social media and doesn't even use a cell phone. How refreshing! Rather than tweet an insult, he sends a crew to poison you.
She is nominated for a nonpartisan role where she's supposed to get along with the individuals she insulted in public.
So that seems like a good reason to block her nomination for this particular role.
It would be different if she were nominated for a role to explicitly execute on Biden's partisan agenda.
Bari Weiss has more on this over at her Substack.
Phew, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to blindly dismiss the Smith College administrator's resignation complaint but if Weiss is associated in some way...
Bari Weiss should be required reading for anyone opposed to the Leftist Cancel Culture we see today. The letter was magnificent.
I would love to but it seems like the only Reason I remember her name was for some sort of garbled "We should only cancel the cancel culture that cancelled me." idiocy that made me swear off reading her anymore.
Lots of liberals being mugged lately.
Maybe she's about ready for some range time.
The Endarkenment continues apace...
"Whether it be falsehoods about the COVID-19 vaccine or debunked claims of election fraud, these online platforms have allowed misinformation to spread, intensifying national crises with real-life, grim consequences for public health and safety," said the House Committee...
"AND THAT'S THE JOB OF D.C. AND NATIONAL JOURNALISTS!"
Who are you going to believe, Fist?
Legions of unknown virologists and medical researchers with the wrong opinions, or highly-qualified fact checkers who've watched several CNN specials on the issue.
The Nation: "West Coast States' Failure to Reopen Schools Is a Disaster."
As a penance for this piece, The Nation better publish something about Trump policies destroying school administrators' ability to make good decisions and gutting teachers' unions making teacher safety a lower priority than that of students or some shit.
"NBC News put out a hit piece on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R–Fla.) that criticized him for…vaccinating elderly Holocaust survivors."
That's not the criticism my progressive friends are making. They told me DeSantis is prioritizing likely Republican voters for vaccination, which must violate all kinds of laws.
It's just one more scandal demonstrating how DeSantis has overseen the country's worst pandemic response — in contrast to Andrew Cuomo, who literally wrote the book on effective leadership.

Hey, so, as an open borders kinda guy, I'm curious on your take about the plan to close the Florida border for pandemic reasons. Should that be limited to actual citizens, with illegal immigrants allowed to still go to and fro?
Oops, sorry, OBL: "undocumented". My bad.
Not to mention that swell poster Cuomo drew (sans crayons, even!).

In 2022, Dr. Fauci will suggest we may need to continue to wear masks through 2023. I may be wrong but wasn’t he also the project manager for the Chunnel?
He belongs in an Ayn Rand novel.
About texas... so apparently the week prior to the cold snap Abbot asked Bidens DoE for a waiver to operate gas and fossil fuel generators at 100% capacity as he knew wind would stop and solar would be limited. During a period of no green sources of energy, they would have an increase in usage and lose 25% of their generation. Bidens administration denied this request unless they charged customer $1500 mW/h.
Biden then took a week off doing nothing as power went out across the state. Ultimately after a week of silence, biden only allowed 1/3rd of the regions in Texas to be eligible for disaster aid.

This is surely to go down with the same coverage Cuomo is receiving from the MSM. Such as the head of PolitFact going on national television and blindly repeating Cuomo's narrative with no push back.
I had a feeling there was more to the story.

Hell no! Do you want him to break a hip?
Nor mean tweeting!
In a survey of 1,000 Trump voters, the majority said the Republican Party should become more loyal to the former president, not less—even if this means losing the support of establishment Republicans.
Do journalists really not get why some people - Republicans and Democrats - ever voted for Trump?
Sure. And that's why they're so furious and are trying to dismiss them as racist conspiracy theorists instead.
When the cattle wander off the range that means that they failed at their job as herders, but they're still blaming the cattle.
"Fauci has admitted that he has previously avoided telling people the plain truth about how long it would take to reach herd immunity because he thought the public wasn't ready to hear it; thus it's not always totally clear whether the doctor's pronouncements reflect genuine uncertainty, public messaging considerations, or a mixture of both."
In summation, the son of a bitch lies.
You can tell he is lying, it’s when his lips are moving.
The real reason he wears a mask.
He even sounds like a B-movie mobster when he does it.
Our students need to attend schools where they feel valued and seen.
"Not this year, mind you. Maybe next year. We'll see what the union says."
How does one feel seen? Like, the "sensation of being watched?" Is this article suggesting that students are exhibitionists?
It's just an evolution of the "self-esteem" bullshit from 15-25 years ago.
If you want to know why people such as AOC or the San Francisco school board president act like such a bunch of entitled shits despite being grown-ass adults, the conflation of narcissism with the idea of self-worth is a big reason why.
Because stating 'our students need to attend schools so they feel the eyes of someone watching that they actually do their homework' isn't as touchy-feely.
How does one feel seen? Like, the “sensation of being watched?”
Here you go. Feel better?
In the meantime, this is the last time I'll comment publicly on renaming until schools are reopened.
Ha.
NBC News put out a hit piece on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R–Fla.) that criticized him for…vaccinating elderly Holocaust survivors.
It knows its audience.
"I, for one, hope we never run out of Holocaust survivors."

Rob Misek?
After two years of socially mandated mask wearing, I can see it never ending. It will be a stave off the seasonal flu, the common cold, and of course future mutations of the Wuhan [lab] virus. And of course anyone who doesn't wear a mask will be a social pariah and putting people's very lives at risk, because of alt right disinformation and QANON-esque conspiracy theories.
It will stop as quickly as removing shoes at the airport.
Oh, wait.
It's not really an accident that the establishment is pushing Chinese social practices over here, even though the reason they actually wore masks prior to this is because their cities are pollution nightmares out of a Captain Planet episode.
Hello
My name is Rev kuck it has been 10 days since I have clicked on a sullum article. It gets easier once you read the authors
Joe Biden continues to earn all those Reason.com staff votes.
In 2021 Democrats have raised the minimum wage by: $0.00 / hour
In 2021 Reason.com benefactor Charles Koch's net worth has increased by: $3.61 billion
Mr. Koch earned $493,000,000 on the most recent business day. More evidence for what I've been saying for years — Democrats pretend to be anti-billionaire in order to trick poor people into voting for them. But once they gain power, they govern in an objectively pro-billionaire manner.

The obsession with "getting DiSantis" has been entertaining, if nothing else.
Pretty much since the moment that Cuomo shifted from praising Trump for getting New York 'everything we asked for' to claiming he was a mass murderer, the national (and local here in leftist south Florida) media has been desperate to paint DiSantis as the face of Covid incompetence. Despite having done a better job of allowing local situations to dictate the response than any other large state, and having the lowest death rate of any large state despite a much older population, somehow he is the target.
Perhaps it was because early on, when florida had identified and tracked 500 cases from cruise ships and airlines, he called for travel from New York to be restricted. New York was not controlling their infections, and new Yorkers were coming to Florida in droves, completely destroying any attempts at tracking, tracing and quarantining the infected.
New York even threatened to sue.
But the election is over, so now we can finally address the carnage in New York. Even so, old habits die hard. They must really fear DiSantis. They pull out the full package of demonization every time someone looks like a real threat.
DeSantis is the most Trump-like in policy while being much better spoken and in the “norms” of behavior out of any politician on the scene right now.
He doesn’t play media games, he has built bipartisan support by taking Florida Eco concerns more seriously than any governor prior, and he has no problems defending his decisions.
Yeah, they fear him. I just hope that fear is based on substance like it was with Trump and not ephemeral like it was with Rubio.
DeSantis seems to have a lot more balls than Rubio ever did. Most of the Republican politicians that came in on the Tea Party populist wave and have stuck around in their seats lost a lot of their moxie after the first couple of terms, and aligned themselves more with the Chamber of Commerce and/or neocon wings of the party.
DeSantis also cleaned house in the state election boards, and is likely the reason why Florida didn't turn into a shitshow on election night like the other swing states--because the people who deliberately tried to muck up the process by finding "ballots" in car trunks and high school utility closets were gone.
New York was not controlling their infections, and new Yorkers were coming to Florida in droves, completely destroying any attempts at tracking, tracing and quarantining the infected.
Slight disagreement. New York was "controlling" their infections, but not in any sort of meaningful or effective way. Either stupidly or maliciously, they were controlling them by shutting down bars, restaurants, schools, libraries, grocery stores, theaters, and public venues. Again, either intentionally or unintetionally-but-predictably driving people from the state.
The MSM wants to destroy DeSantis; it is obvious.
Here is a guy who actually followed the fucking science. And media assholes who don't know jack-shit are writing trash articles to denigrate him. That says much more about them than it does the governor.
Compare Governor DeSantis' performance in saving the lives of the elderly by following the science to Andrew Cuomo, whose incompetence and venality killed thousands of elderly.

ALBANY — The FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn have launched an investigation that is examining, at least in part, the actions of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's coronavirus task force in its handling of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities during the pandemic, the Times Union has learned.
The probe by the U.S. attorney's office in the Eastern District of New York is apparently in its early stages and is focusing on the work of some of the senior members of the governor's task force, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter who is not authorized to comment publicly.

If this is an accurate description of what's happening with the Merrick Garland appointment to be the Attorney General, it's a fucking disgrace:
In 2016, Senate Republicans refused to grant him [a confirmation hearing] after President Barack Obama nominated him for the Supreme Court. Republicans and Democrats alike are hailing the nominee, who spearheaded domestic terrorism investigations for the Justice Department in the 1990s, as expertly qualified both to fight the threat of extremist violence and to restore morale, stability and institutional integrity to a Justice Department roiled by political storms in recent years.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/garland-to-make-case-for-new-era-at-justice-department-11613989802?
The last thing we need is a bipartisan crusade to persecute average Americans as if they were extremists because they don't believe the 2020 election was free and fair, etc. From Waco to Oklahoma City, which part of the Justice Department's efforts to combat extremism in 1990s was considered a success? Have they completely lost their minds?
Likewise, the last thing that we need is to restore morale and stability at the Justice Department. The Justice Department is a disgrace. They use opposition research to get warrants under false pretenses to perpetrate surveillance on presidential candidates. The Justice Department needs to have their morale completely crushed. Their whole structure needs to be completely destabilized.
Maybe sometime after Comey is tried for his crimes, they can restore institutional integrity.
Comey should be in prison, along with Brennan and a bunch of others. They lied to the FISA court.
Aside from pulling shit that made Watergate look like jaywalking, they deliberately perjured themselves and then went on talk shows for attaboys while bragging about it.
It should be obvious to anybody in Washington by now that as long as you're on the right side of the establishment, you're invincible.
There was a memo released just last week of comey to clapper saying they couldn't corroborate the Dossier. That was sent on the same day comey signed a FISA warrant saying the information was corroberated.
Amazing that he isnt in jail.
And Clinesmith just walking? THAT ws amazing. Guess when you're on Team D, it is perfectly fine to lie to the fucking FISA Court!
When the hell are these FISA judges going to wake the fuck up?
The FISA judges believe that they and the DoJ are on exactly the same team, so they would prefer to be lied to.
On the upside, maybe nobody will be qualified to take any position in government.
Garland has come out and refused to allow Durham to complete his investigation:

Next up... Hunter?
From Waco to Oklahoma City, which part of the Justice Department’s efforts to combat extremism in 1990s was considered a success?
Why would you assume that was a bug and not a feature. Waco inspired OK City. The prosecution of the Hammonds on the heels of the Bundy Ranch clusterfuck led to the Malhuer Refuge Standoff. Federal law enforcement needs this stuff to escalate to reinforce their importance as they are being forced to shift away from the giant success of their war on drugs.
People who resist government control must be punished. More civil forfeiture, more domestic surveillance, more see something say something.
"Why would you assume that was a bug and not a feature?"
Occam's razor.
Why assume a nefarious plot when simple stupidity by government bureaucrats will suffice?
It starts as simple stupidity, but once the money starts flowing, the incentive to keep that spigot turned on never fades. The CIA sells drugs to to get money to buy guns for foreign radicals and then justifies making war against those foreign radicals. The FBI provides fake bombs to the mentally ill to justify more investigations of domestic terrorists.
It's not a plot. It's history.

The real lesson of that Capitol event is that the FBI can’t find out who planted bombs the night before at the DNC and RNC.
They are big tough guys when going after MAGA granny’s tho.
That has been fascinating, how the FBI and all of the law enforcement organs of government have FAILED to finger the RNC and DNC Pipe Bomber. Truly astounding.
One might think they are not trying to hard to find him/her/it?

How can we talk about pupe bombs with all the mass fire extinguisher murders in this country??
We need common sense fire extinguisher controls.
How can America continue to ignore the fact that one in four capitol police officers were assaulted on campus in 2020? If only someone in charge had a pen and a phone and could write a letter, with not obvious consequences, to their colleagues.
Ban high capacity extinguishers and create a national registration system.
I manage to get through the days by huffing lots of NO2.
I don't know how you can trivialize a violent insurrection that caused the deaths of at least five people and injured hundreds of thousands of policemen.
Scratch that, I can. You're just wishing for civil war in this country so you can sit up there in Canada eating popcorn and cheering millions of deaths.
Because it only caused the death of 1 person as a direct result based on actual information, the one person shot by police. You are counting normal medical deaths in your count because you are dishonest.

Nobody will need to wear a mask this summer, let alone next year, unless left wing media propagandists (including Reason) continue promoting and defending the lies by Fauci and others in Biden's corrupt administration.
On Friday, Laura Ingraham interviewed Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya and Harvard’s Martin Kulldorf, who explained how/why natural herd immunity has been transpiring in the US for the past several months, and that increased vaccine distribution will speed up herd immunity in the US in the next several months.

This is one of the best interviews about covid and herd immunity that reveals some of Anthony Fauci’s many lies (that should have gotten him fired 9 months ago).
From Friday's Wall St. Journal
We’ll Have Herd Immunity by April
Covid cases have dropped 77% in six weeks. Experts should level with the public about the good news.
by Dr. Marty Makary
https://www.wsj.com/articles/well-have-herd-immunity-by-april-11613669731
Amid the dire Covid warnings, one crucial fact has been largely ignored: Cases are down 77% over the past six weeks. If a medication slashed cases by 77%, we’d call it a miracle pill. Why is the number of cases plummeting much faster than experts predicted?
In large part because natural immunity from prior infection is far more common than can be measured by testing. Testing has been capturing only from 10% to 25% of infections, depending on when during the pandemic someone got the virus. Applying a time-weighted case capture average of 1 in 6.5 to the cumulative 28 million confirmed cases would mean about 55% of Americans have natural immunity.
Now add people getting vaccinated. As of this week, 15% of Americans have received the vaccine, and the figure is rising fast. Former Food and Drug Commissioner Scott Gottlieb estimates 250 million doses will have been delivered to some 150 million people by the end of March.
There is reason to think the country is racing toward an extremely low level of infection. As more people have been infected, most of whom have mild or no symptoms, there are fewer Americans left to be infected. At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.
Antibody studies almost certainly underestimate natural immunity. Antibody testing doesn’t capture antigen-specific T-cells, which develop “memory” once they are activated by the virus. Survivors of the 1918 Spanish flu were found in 2008—90 years later—to have memory cells still able to produce neutralizing antibodies.
Researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found that the percentage of people mounting a T-cell response after mild or asymptomatic Covid-19 infection consistently exceeded the percentage with detectable antibodies. T-cell immunity was even present in people who were exposed to infected family members but never developed symptoms. A group of U.K. scientists in September pointed out that the medical community may be under-appreciating the prevalence of immunity from activated T-cells.
Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. would also suggest much broader immunity than recognized. About 1 in 600 Americans has died of Covid-19, which translates to a population fatality rate of about 0.15%. The Covid-19 infection fatality rate is about 0.23%. These numbers indicate that roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population has had the infection.
In my own conversations with medical experts, I have noticed that they too often dismiss natural immunity, arguing that we don’t have data. The data certainly doesn’t fit the classic randomized-controlled-trial model of the old-guard medical establishment. There’s no control group. But the observational data is compelling.
I have argued for months that we could save more American lives if those with prior Covid-19 infection forgo vaccines until all vulnerable seniors get their first dose. Several studies demonstrate that natural immunity should protect those who had Covid-19 until more vaccines are available. Half my friends in the medical community told me: Good idea. The other half said there isn’t enough data on natural immunity, despite the fact that reinfections have occurred in less than 1% of people—and when they do occur, the cases are mild.
But the consistent and rapid decline in daily cases since Jan. 8 can be explained only by natural immunity. Behavior didn’t suddenly improve over the holidays; Americans traveled more over Christmas than they had since March. Vaccines also don’t explain the steep decline in January. Vaccination rates were low and they take weeks to kick in.
My prediction that Covid-19 will be mostly gone by April is based on laboratory data, mathematical data, published literature and conversations with experts. But it’s also based on direct observation of how hard testing has been to get, especially for the poor. If you live in a wealthy community where worried people are vigilant about getting tested, you might think that most infections are captured by testing. But if you have seen the many barriers to testing for low-income Americans, you might think that very few infections have been captured at testing centers. Keep in mind that most infections are asymptomatic, which still triggers natural immunity.
Many experts, along with politicians and journalists, are afraid to talk about herd immunity. The term has political overtones because some suggested the U.S. simply let Covid rip to achieve herd immunity. That was a reckless idea. But herd immunity is the inevitable result of viral spread and vaccination. When the chain of virus transmission has been broken in multiple places, it’s harder for it to spread—and that includes the new strains.
Herd immunity has been well-documented in the Brazilian city of Manaus, where researchers in the Lancet reported the prevalence of prior Covid-19 infection to be 76%, resulting in a significant slowing of the infection. Doctors are watching a new strain that threatens to evade prior immunity. But countries where new variants have emerged, such as the U.K., South Africa and Brazil, are also seeing significant declines in daily new cases. The risk of new variants mutating around the prior vaccinated or natural immunity should be a reminder that Covid-19 will persist for decades after the pandemic is over. It should also instill a sense of urgency to develop, authorize and administer a vaccine targeted to new variants.
Some medical experts privately agreed with my prediction that there may be very little Covid-19 by April but suggested that I not to talk publicly about herd immunity because people might become complacent and fail to take precautions or might decline the vaccine. But scientists shouldn’t try to manipulate the public by hiding the truth. As we encourage everyone to get a vaccine, we also need to reopen schools and society to limit the damage of closures and prolonged isolation. Contingency planning for an open economy by April can deliver hope to those in despair and to those who have made large personal sacrifices.

A week ago, on Sunday's NBC News, Anthony Fauci blatantly lied about viral immunology by falsely claiming (after asked if covid confers immunity to many/most who were/are infected) when he answered “Prior infection doesn’t protect you against reinfection.”
It's between 5 and 6 minutes on the video at
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/lot-things-open-schools-vaccinating-teachers-fauci/story?id=75883336
To date, only 6 Americans (and only 52 people worlwide) are known to have been reinfected with covid.
https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/08/covid-19-reinfection-tracker/
Since 28 millions have tested positive for covid, and since CDC estimates 4.6 infections for every case, according to CDC estimates, the chance of getting reinfected by covid is 6 out of 129 million.
While the vast majority of counties with the highest covid case rates (and likely covid infection rates) are sparsely populated rural Red counties, increasingly more highly populated urban and suburban counties also appear close to achieving natural herd immunity, which vaccines have/will hasten.
Counties with populations >150K with high covid case rates are:
Case Rate – County, St – Population
17.1% – Yuma, AZ – 195K
15.6% – Lubbock, TX – 278K
15.4% – Webb, TX – 250K (Larado)
14.8% – Imperial, CA – 174K
14.6% – Miami-Dade, FL – 2,716K
14.4% – El Paso, TX – 622K
14.4% – Kings, CA – 152K
14.3% – Utah, UT – 516K (Provo)
13.2% – Muskogee, OK – 189K
13.1% – San Bernardino, CA – 2,035K
12.6% – Providence, RI – 626K
12.3% – Brown, WI – 248K (Green Bay)
12.3% – Elkhart, IN – 197K
11.9% – Salt Lake, UT – 1,029K
11.7% – Los Angeles, CA – 10,040K
11.6% – Racine, WI – 195K
11.6% – Davidson, TN – 626K (Nashville)
11.6% – Richland, NY – 474K (Staten Island)
11.5% – Rockland, NY – 325K (NYC suburb)
11.4% – Maricopa, AZ – 4,485K (Phoenix)
11.2% – Milwaukee, WI – 947K
11.3% – Kern, CA – 900K (Bakersfield)
11.1% – Douglas, NE – 517K (Omaha)
11.0% – Waukesha, WI – 389K (Milwaukee suburb)
11.0% – Passaic, NJ – 501K (Paterson)
Worldometers.info (whose projected new covid infections I consider close to reality, but not their worst case estimates) revised its projections today.
They now project the following 26 states will continue experiencing huge declines in new covid infections during the next several months, towards attaining herd immunity.
AL, AK, AZ, AR, CO, DC, ID, IN, IA, KS, LA, MN, MS, MT, NE, NV, NM, ND, OH, OK, SD, WI, TN, UT, WV, WY.
They now project the following 10 states will continue experiencing significant declines in new covid infections during the next several months, towards attaining herd immunity.
DE, GA, KY, MO, NH, NC, PA, RI, SC, VA.
They now project the following 8 states will see experience little or no decline in covid infections in the next several months.
CT, HI, IL, ME, MA, NJ, TX, WA.
Most notably, they now project the following 7 states will experience increases in new covid infections during the next several months. CA, FL, MD, MI, NY, OR, VT.
Interestingly, Blue states comprise 13 of the 15 states projected to have small declines or increases in new covid infections during the next several months, while Florida and Texas are the only Red states.
Looks like the Blue state lockdowns and mask mandates achieved their goal, which was to delay new infections, but which has also delayed the arrival of herd immunity in their states.
Other highly populated urban and suburban counties with high covid case rates include:
11.7% - Riverside, CA (LA)
11.4% - Tarrant, TX (Ft. Worth)
10.8% - Westchester, NY (NYC)
10.7% - Suffolk, NY (Long Island)
10.6% - Nassau, NY (NYC)
10.5% - Dallas, TX
10.0% - Clark, NV (Las Vegas)
9.7% - Broward, FL (Ft. Lauderdale)
9.7% - Bexar, TX (San Antonio)
9.6% - Bronx, NY (NYC)
9.1% - Cook, IL (Chicago)
8.9% - Queens, NY (NYC)
8.4% - Franklin, OH (Columbus)
8.1% - Orange, CA (LA)
8.1% - Orange, FL (Orlando)
7.9% - Palm Beach, FL
7.8% - Kings, NY (NYC)
7.3% - Harris, TX (Houston)
7.3% - Philadelphia, PA
63 million doses of covid vaccine have been administered so far in the US.
But fewer than half of those doses created new immunity, as about 40% of doses were given to previously infected Americans (who were/are already immune), about 10% were second doses (even though the first covid dose created immunity in about 90% of recipients), and because about 10% of covid vaccine recipients didn't become immune after receiving the vaccine.
So the 63 million covid vaccine doses that were administered have created immunity in only about 30 million Americans
(63M x .6 x .9 x .9 = 30.6M).
More than a month ago, the CDC estimated (but Reason still hasn’t informed readers) a mean of 4.6 times more Americans were infected with covid (than had tested positive for covid) in 2020, and that CDC was 95% certain that between 4.0 and 5.4 times more Americans were infected (than tested positive).
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/burden.html#anchor_1607017301754
Since 8.7% of Americans have tested positive for covid so far, 40% of Americans have been infected with Covid (.087 x 4.6 = .4), according to CDC data and estimates.
And since >99.99% of those previously infected with covid remain immune (as just 6 Americans have been reinfected out of 28M confirmed cases), 40% of Americans are now immune due to prior infection.
And since about an additional 9% of Americans have become immune from vaccines, 49% of Americans are now immune.
Unfortunately, Fauci, Biden and left wing media propagandists (including Reason) have refused to acknowledge CDC’s own covid infection estimates (or subsequent immunity rates) because doing so would not please Biden, Fauci or the left wing news media who demonized Trump, Scott Atlas, Rand Paul, Tom Massie and others for the past 8 months for truthfully informing the public about natural herd immunity.
Natural herd immunity is the key reason why rates of new daily covid cases have plummeted in most states during the past 2 – 3 months, which can best understood by looking at graphs at:
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states
The 35 states with the sharpest declines (i.e. >75%) in new covid cases, including many states where herd immunity is now transpiring are:
North Dakota -93.3%
Wyoming -90.3%
Michigan -89.5%
South Dakota -89.4%
Arkansas -89.3%
Wisconsin -89.2%
Idaho -88.0%
Mississippi -87.7%
Nebraska -87.5%
Missouri -87.4%
Tennessee -87.4%
Rhode Island -87.3%
Minnesota -87.0%
New Mexico -86.4%
California -86.4%
Nevada -85.7%
Connecticut -85.5%
Indiana -85.2%
Alaska -85.2%
Iowa (uncertain due to huge data dump)
Illinois -84.6%
Montana –83.1%
Ohio -82.7%
Arizona –82.6%
Kansas -81.5%
West Virginia -80.2%
Washington -79.7%
Oklahoma -79.5%
Louisiana -79.0%
Alabama -78.5%
Colorado -78.0%
Texas -77.5%
Pennsylvania -75.7%
Utah -75.4%
Maine -75.2%
Bill, appreciate the info on herd immunity. But does it have to get posted in every article comment section?
That was an amazing thread shit, Bill. Kudos.
Strong work, Bill. But you better drink about a case of Pedialyte now, or your heart will stop.
Bill, doesn't such a low "reinfection" rate suggest at least a likelihood that some, most, or all the initial infections were not COVID, and that the COVID diagnosis was the result of a false positive COVID test? The very low number seems to be in line with the predicted false positive rates. Were talking one in 4.67 million reinfected.
Fuck you , Fauci. Vaccinate old people and leave everyone else the fuck alone. This shit needs to stop.
I got an email from my employer with a letter that allows me to jump to the front of the line. Turns out I'm an "essential worker." That was a surprise. Anyway, my printer is still unplugged.
Turns out I’m an “essential worker.”
See! I'm still worth something no matter what my fucking ex says.
I'm with his fucking ex.
Oops--meant to say that I'm fucking his ex.
You too?
I’m out.
No worries. I wore a mask.
Having also fucked his ex while they were still married because he couldn't hit the right spots I really hope you put one on her too.
I did. Two, in fact.
Thank God Dr. Fauci reached me in time!
Turns out I’m an “essential worker.”
Bring that up at your next review - - - - - - - - - -
Everyone in the company got the letter. All 26,000 of us.
So yes, this is one of those times you’re just fucking around and not serious (I.e. lying).
That's pretty funny. Seems like there is a pretty obvious way to prioritize the vaccinations: by risk. Start with over 80s and people with serious health problems. Then over 70s, etc. If the goal is actually to reduce death and illness, then that seems like the only logical approach.
Gotta maintain the illusion that this is a serious threat to everyone, I guess.
Doing things that way 1) is too straightforward, 2) doesn't allow the equity mob to gum up the works crying about how we define "risk" and who we're allowed to say is "at risk," and 3) might allow some people with privilege to receive the vaccine.
Is this one of those times you're just fucking around and not serious (I.e. lying)?
So cute that you'd beg for my attention. Here's a couple clues to answer your question. First, I wasn't talking to you. Second, I was talking to someone I know personally. You figure it out. And quit trolling all my posts like a lonely puppy. Loser.
The fact you had to talk to him through Reason's comment boards means it must not be that personal of a knowledge.
You're just jealous that I have friends and you don't. Loser.
In other words, Fauci lied. He is not worth the money we pay him, which is over 400K annually.
He is a god-damned liar. So it is no wonder that the Leftist Tart ENB shades and distorts his actions to hide their essential nature. Fauci lied about the transmissability of the virus, he lied about wearing masks, he lied about treatments. He did so consciously and deliberately. Fauci is a disgrace, and should be dismissed.
Fauci is a disgrace, and should be
dismissed.jailed.Or taken on a hunting trip.
Or a helicopter tour.
Or to a Russian Roulette tournament.
At the Glock factory.
Can it be on another bargain basement helicopter from the State Of Illinois like the one Kobe saved a ton of money on?
You left out that he has consistently lied about COVID reinfections, saying that previous COVID infection does not confer immunity in the future. This obviously wrong assumption (and outright lie) is the basis for his idiotic "masks next year" prediction. Vaccination is the only road to herd immunity in his view. Since I don't believe he's this stupid, it shows that he is loving the limelight way too much. I guarantee that come this summer, he's going to start pushing zero infections for three consecutive months as the standard for relaxing social distancing and mask standards.

This is what happens EVERY election. They refuse to deal with the problem at hand, but it never gets fixed for the next time because it's moot. This is how the lower federal courts and some state courts have screwed with legislatures and election law for the past 15 years.
Officer: I’m giving you a ticket for speeding.
Me: That was in the past. I’m not speeding now. You charge is moot.
Officer:
I'm not charging you, I'm charging the car. So I'm going to have to seize it as a civil action in partnership with the federal government until such time as the case is disposed.
You may be able to get it back after an undetermined but lengthy amount of time after you've paid all the accrued fees plus court costs, assuming the feds haven't sold it at auction by then and given my department the money to buy that really cool MRAP from them that we need to conduct no knock drug raids/family dog hunts.

Politically, masks are useful because they're a tangible, visible reminder of panic and desperation. They teach people to feel like they live in a state of perpetual emergency, which is EXTREMELY valuable for opportunistic politicians and statists.
There are SO many other agendas they can't wait to push as "equivalent" to the pandemic, just as statists have long promoted their agendas as the "equivalent" of war. You'll see masks emblazoned with the slogans for other "crises" that supposedly demand the same commitment.
Where do large numbers of people display the level of submission and obedience desired by statists? In a military unit, in a prison, and in a hospital ward. They want you to see the entire country as one or more of those things, every day, always.

https://www.politico.eu/article/xinjiang-china-polysilicon-solar-energy-europe/
Nearly every solar power panel sold in the European Union has its origins in China’s oppressed Xinjiang region.
The solar industry and Brussels lawmakers argue Europe’s renewable energy push should not come at a human cost amid long-standing international concern over reports China has detained 1 million people with Muslim backgrounds in camps in Xinjiang and is putting them to work.
“Everybody knows what’s going on in China, and when facilities are based there you have to accept that there’s a high possibility that forced labor will be used,” said Milan Nitzschke, president of EU ProSun, an alliance of solar businesses seeking to promote sustainable, solar manufacturing based in the EU.
While the U.S. has already rolled out sanctions against products such as cotton and tomatoes originating from Xinjiang, the European Commission has avoided confronting China with any trade measures.
It has fallen to lawmakers in the European Parliament to try to push Brussels to implement trade bans, on all industries including solar panels, if companies are implicated in human rights abuses.
“Import bans need to complement as a last resort if forced labor is involved in the production, like in Xinjiang," said Green MEP Anna Cavazzini.
Suspicions about every panel
For the past decade Beijing has been carrying out a campaign to detain and “reeducate” the Muslim-majority population of the Xinjiang region.
Human rights groups have alerted that state-run reeducation centers double as forced labor camps, with detained people obliged to work in low-skilled, labor-intensive sectors such as cotton picking. But recent reports out of the region suggest the Xinjiang government has also been focusing on “upskilling” the workforce and putting them to work in more specialized sectors.
That’s of particular concern to the global solar industry given Xinjiang’s outsized role in the production of polysilicon, a material used to make photovoltaic (PV) cells.
The solar industry and Brussels lawmakers argue Europe’s renewable energy push should not come at a human cost amid long-standing international concern over reports China has detained 1 million people with Muslim backgrounds in camps in Xinjiang and is putting them to work.
"International concern." Also, this isn't anything new. American global megacorps have been exploiting Chinese labor policies for decades now. That's why there's no "concern" for doing manufacturing business in a country where the factory owners have to put up suicide nets outside the buildings.
You guy's are going to trigger White Knight, our very own anti-Uighur version of Misek.
“The government should urge everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, because vaccinated people are overwhelmingly safe from the disease.”
Here’s a better idea, everyone should be urging the government to allow everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, put away these idiotic rules about who can be vaccinated when, and get vaccines out as quickly as possible to anyone who wants them. Yes, give vulnerable populations first dibs, but even they benefit if everybody else gets vaccinated.
The real question is why the population isn’t demanding that government at all levels make this the overriding priority, at least as important as so-called emergency directors shutting down churches and restaurants.
Yes! Nailed it! I said it wouldn't be over until 2022! (Actually I'm revising my estimate to 2023).
NOT because I want it, but because that's my guess based on how people act. It's not the politicians, they are just lagging indicators not leaders. Let me repeat, politicians are lagging indicators not leaders. It's the people, mostly the Karens, who want everyone else to keep wearing masks. Karenism is the prevailing ideology of the land, for both the Left and the Right.
Karen == "I have an idea of how the world works, and I will nag everyone into my perception of reality". That's what "I demand to see the manager" is all about. It's pervasive throughout our society. Texas suing Pennsylvania was Karenism at the state level.
In terms of the pandemic, Karens have an idea of what should be done, based on headlines they read a year ago just before the lockdowns. There can be no deviation from what they imagine the reality to be.
p.s. In my neck of the woods, Asian females tended to wear masks even before the pandemic. Why? Because of SARS in Asia. They were used to it. And one reason the eastern Asian countries have done so well in this pandemic, they had a populace that already wore masks and washed their hands and all that. 'Muricans don't like to be told to wash their hands.
p.p.s. We have to change our culture. Remember before teh pandemic when you sick colleague came into work sneezing and coughing and touching everything. And everyone got the flu because of that asshole. Remember how he wasn't alone, that everyone who was sick did that. Well we CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE! If you're sick stay home! We have a new disease that kills ten times as many people as a bad flu. You thought you were miserable shitting your pants with 104 temperature, that's nothing compared to COVID.
p.p.p.s. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and don't come into work when you're sick. This is going to be the unwritten rule for the next decade at least.
NOT because I want it,

Your granddad saved the world from the Nazis. Your great granddad saved it from the Hun. And you’re bitching about a mask? Jeepers cripes, grow a backbone.
hmm...
p.s. In my neck of the woods, Asian females tended to wear masks even before the pandemic. Why? Because of SARS in Asia. They were used to it.
That, and the disgustingly polluted cities.
p.p.p.s. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and don’t come into work when you’re sick. This is going to be the unwritten rule for the next decade at least.
Hope libertarians are ready for federally mandated paid sick leave.
Welcome to Massachusetts
"...We have to change our culture..."
Fuck off, slaver.
You thought you were miserable shitting your pants with 104 temperature, that’s nothing compared to COVID.
I have several family members who have had it. The children shook it off and the adults compared it to a nasty cold.
My best friend and his family had it. The kid barely noticed. He was miserable. His wife said it was the sickest she had ever been in her entire life.
People have a wide range of reactions to the disease. Some poeple get a low fever and that's it. Others are hospitalized. Some are hospitalized for months. And then others die. It's sort of like the flu but intensified. Some people think their flu is just a bad cold, other people shit out both ends, and some people actually die of the flu.
I have a friend who has muscular dystrophy. The flu is no joke to him. The flu would kill him.
You are the worst. It infects the lungs. It is a viral pneumonia. Pneumonia is common and the effects are long lasting. I had a viral pneumonia in 1988. It kicked my ass at the peak of my health. I was bedridden for 3 weeks, lost 20 pounds and had relapses over the next 3 years. It was the sickest I have ever been in my entire life. Jim Henson had a streptococcus pneumonia and died within 3 days.
You are scared shitless by something you don't even bother to understand. COVID-19 is not particularly dangerous to anyone who isn't just as susceptible to being killed by the flu or any other pneumonia. Get over it , Karen.
and don’t come into work when you’re sick
That's a nice thing to say, but in many vocations that's just not possible. When your boss is running a skeleton crew and you call in sick, there's a good chance you'll be replaced. That's especially true in restaurants. Cooks are not allowed to call in sick. Think about that the next time you go out to eat.
Yes, I know it's not always possible. But I was in an engineering firm where one dude came in with the flu last February, coughing and sneezing all over the place. We didnt' know if it was COVID or not and it took the VP to tell him to go home.
This was a guy who had sick days and vacation days available.
At the minimum, Affluent White Folk need to stay home if they are sick, even if the poor and working poor cannot. Affluent White Folk get sick days for a reason.
The worst.
Where will the country be if the affluent white folk aren't there to clean up after the unqualified, utterly useless, Affirmative Action hires?
Fuck you.
Not without dinner and flowers first.
No foreplay. Just a rusty chainsaw.
Or we could lie about the numbers like China. The US lied to make them larger, China just said we don't have that anymore
Fuck off, karen
Masks work so well! 500,000 died!
Dumbass.
And one reason the eastern Asian countries have done so well in this pandemic, they had a populace that already wore masks and washed their hands and all that.
Those Asian countries have 30x lower death rate than western countries. I don't think that can be explained by behaviors. There has to be a major factor that has nothing to do with behaviors or NPIs. I suspect some kind of pre-existing immunity. And maybe healthier old people.
Japan, for example, has had a high infection rate, but very low death rate. Without lockdowns, social distance or universal masks.
Even if all the vaccine did was "reduce deaths and eliminate severe symptoms," that would be sufficient basis for tossing the masks after vaccination, as it would make Covid pretty much the equivalent of seasonal flu.
"Get Ready for this year's Covid Season" coming to a population center near you, 2022.
NBC News put out a hit piece on Gov. Ron DeSantis (R–Fla.) that criticized him for…vaccinating elderly Holocaust survivors.
Mizek hardest hit.
I cannot believe that NBC actually put that into an article. Criticizing a governor for vaccinating Holocaust survivors? That is low.
People who think what Anthony Fauci says is important should be free to do so.
Yep, but I should be free to not pay him.
Fauci is a known and admitted liar.
Please stop quoting him, or reporting on him.
His words shape policy. So liar or not, he's worth reporting on.
Let’s face it. Fauci is being treated as a hero because Trump criticized him. Anyone Trump attacks instantaneously becomes a resistance hero. On the other hand, if Trump had said, “Fauci is my man! Whatever he says goes!,” Biden would’ve fired Fauci within an hour of inauguration. Sad to say that that is the level of politics we deal with in today’s world.
Remember, Trump was allowed to pull shit every day to try to undermine the election results, but Sullum wasn't supposed to write about it.
Only a mere 64 articles in three months running cover for the steal, how the poor dear suffered.
So? Virtually every day of those three months, Trump or one of his cronies was up to some activity directly relevant to what Sullum was writing about.
You and sullum should look up folies-a-deux then seek treatment for it.
"So? Virtually every day of those three months, Trump or one of his cronies was up to some activity directly relevant to what Sullum was writing about."
Yes, Sullum is as addled as you are regarding mean tweets, asshole.
Look at those goalposts move.
The original statement was about how Trump was allowed to do stuff, but not Sullum, and then all of a sudden it's about the relevancy of Sullum's writing. What a clown you are.
Cite?
Remember, you're allowed to post your lies here every day, TDS-addled shit.
Fuck off and die.
Fuck you, Fauci!
That is all.
Things would've gotten back to normal sooner after a war concluded with major nuclear blasts or weaponized anthrax.
Trump voters never had the support of establishment Republicans. The GOP establishment hates the Trump voters, and the feeling is mutual.
You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has masks, and those masks have to be guarded by regulations. Who's gonna do it? You? You Reason? I have a greater responsibility that you can possibly fathom. You weep for the suicidal children and you curse the CDC. You have the luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that those kids' deaths while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence while grotesque, and incomprehensible, to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on those masks , you need me on those masks! We use words like vaccine, immunity and compliance. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something, you use them as a punchline. I have neither the time, nor the inclination to explain myself, to a man who rises and sleeps, under the blanket of the very safety that I provide, and than questions the manner in which I provide it! I’d rather you just said ‘thank you’, and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a mask, and stand 20 feet apart. Either way, I don’t give a damn, what you think you are entitled to!
Also, the way we're handling herd immunity reminds me of how they handle the "toxins" in the outside air in the book "Dust". Each year they watch the number go up or down or whatever. Each year there's hope that maybe things will be better soon. But it's never good enough to go outside....
All right, all right! I'll wear three of the Goddamned things!
Just make it stop!
Funny. Tom Cruise just went on that same rant recently. He recorded the rant and it was "released" to the public so that everyone knows that Tom Cruise wears a mask, even in the closet.
Of course Republicans and other Trump voters should still look to Trump to lead. What has the erstwhile Republican mainstream done for them lately?
Who are the prominent pro-Trump Republicans going to be, going forward? Trump himself could run for president or even other office, but there's no denying his age. And even if he were much younger he'd need cadre. I'm hoping Rand Paul will e prominently placed.
This should be so obvious it goes without saying, but if the Republican Party cannot get it together and form something resembling a unified coalition of factions, they are not going to be able to win the Presidency or a majority in either house of Congress. We will have effective one-party Democratic rule at the Federal level.
As much as Republicans like Mitch McConnell are sleazy slimeballs, they do realize that the traditional Republicans and Trump Republicans have to work together if the Republican Party is going to have a chance of retaining any Federal power.
Remember everyone, I'm completely neutral and definitely not a Democratic Party representative concern trolling.
> In a survey of 1,000 Trump voters, the majority said the Republican Party should become more loyal to the former president, not less—even if this means losing the support of establishment Republicans.
Time to split the party. There can be a Trump Party for those who are loyal to a personality, and a Republican Party for those who are loyal to conservative principles.
There can be a Trump Party for those who are loyal to a some one who did better than any POTUS since Silent Cal.
Then there can be a party for adolescent, TDS-addled shits like you who are incapable of focusing on anything but personality.
Fuck off and die.
It would be interesting to see you post your daily blood pressure readings.
HO2
gottem
It would be interesting to see your IQ test.
Fuck off and die, TDS-addled shit.
So, no party for people like Romney, the Lincoln Project, etc.?
The Republican Party would reward each person that stays with an autographed Rick Santorum sweater vest.
What principles, exactly, have the GOP done jackshit for over the last 20 years?
Having forced us into these over the top measures, they confront the fact that they ARE somewhat effective against a whole range of pathogens, and thus have some sort of medical benefit even if Covid-19 were to vanish tomorrow. Lockdowns and masks probably hugely decreased the prevalence of influenza this winter, for instance. So they absolutely have benefits even after Covid is gone.
The problem arises from the fact that they've utterly given up on cost benefit analysis, in order to justify these crazy measures. So there's no countervailing cost being taken into account to say, "Alright, at this point it makes sense to tell people to go back to their normal lives."
They've trapped themselves in a sort of 'reasoning' that can never tell them it's time to stop.
That was the biggest danger in all of this--that a cult in service of the Precautionary Principle would establish itself at the cultural level. Upper-middle class/wealthy Gen-Xers and Milennials have shown themselves during the last year to be a bunch of soft-ass, risk-averse bitches who think that no harm should ever happen to anyone, anywhere. Their motto should be, "extremism in the pursuit of safety is no vice."
The problem is that the left is only relying on the advice of medical experts, who have been conditioned from around the age of 22 to be primarily concerned with the prevention, treatment, and curing of disease at all costs. Word is, many such professionals are calling for masks and social distancing during flu season to continue forever.
Fauci is a demonstrated liar.
The government is needlessly imposing draconian top-down limitations of how we life our lives, requiring near-worthless masks to enter any building and making it almost impossible to acquire basic good and services in portions of the country... and Robby is "frustrated."
It's FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS and it's too bad the libertarian paper of record cannot bring itself to state this obvious fact.
No, what is "F---ing outrageous" is that you consider a minor inconvenience like wearing a mask "draconian" when it actually is just common courtesy and common sense to do so. Please start acting and thinking like an adult instead of spoiled child.
I have to assume you're trolling, no one with government cock this far down their throat would post on reason. Right?
There's a lot more to it than the GD masks. While most people focus on the masks, their biggest issue is the social distancing rules that have eliminated the things many of us hold dear, like live sports, concerts, all live shows, large gatherings, etc. That's what's got to go.
"Anthony Fauci Says Americans Might Still Need To Wear Masks in 2022"
To keep fear and government control going long enough for people to become used to it?
Fuck that.
He's not our highest paid federal employee for his talents as a doctor.
We won't need to wear masks then, we don't need to wear masks now, and we didn't need to wear masks over the last year.
And for the most part, I haven't. Going to the grocery is non-optional, so I diaper up (sort of) when going in - it's their property after all - and only a few times have I had to tell some Karen to fuck off for demanding that I "cover my nose". For other activities I choose to patronize businesses that let their customers decide for themselves, and the vast majority of fellow barflies and bowlers go maskless in these havens of sanity in an insane world.
Fuck Fauci and the horse he rode in on.
We need to wear masks now, and we need to continue to wear them as long as COVID is a threat. Your attitude is totally irresponsible and this selfish ignorance has killed far too many people.
Fuck you.
Is that you, Karen?
If you don't cover up both your nose and your mouth when you wear a mask, and you refuse to wear a mask out in public and to social distance when it's still necessary, in both cases, to do so, you are screwing everybody else over. That's totally inconsiderate of other people, including your own friends, family and neighbors, who you run the risk of either infecting with the Covid-19 virus, and/or contracting the Covid-19 virus yourself. Moreover, people can be infected with the Covid-19 virus and still be asymptomatic, thereby infecting other people without even knowing it.
Fuck off, twerp.
Fuck you.
And you base the effectiveness of masks on what data? I've looked and it isn't there. It wasn't there in 2017 when CDV made their pandemic response plan. It was only there when sheeple asked something to be done that was relatively easy and could be shown by virtue signaling. Bring data or go back into your cave of fear.

Given the fact that irresponsible people continue to politicize wearing of masks, and equally irresponsible people are refusing to get vaccinated for ridiculous reasons, Dr. Fauci is correct that we may still need to wear masks in 2022. His job is to tell us what we need to hear, not what we WANT to hear.
Fuck you twice.
We want to hear the truth. He's made clear it's not his job to tell the truth.
I'm never getting the vaccine you glowing loser. Get lost.
He needs to hear the sound of a fist impacting his skull.

Zager and Evans support Fauci in that.
Forward this to Fauci!
